ART & CULTURE

For the first time in 35 years, the Benaki Museum presents to the Greek and international public highlights from its singular collection of Chinese ceramics – from June 8 to September 4. Ninety masterpieces of ceramic art from the historical collection of George Eumorfopoulos, donated to the Benaki Museum in the 1930s, testify to the global impact of Chinese civilisation, shed light on the course of contact between China and the West through art, and attest to the vision of the collector and his ties with Greece. The exhibition is designed in such as way as to be read in two ways. One narrative explores the history and civilisation of China from the 3rd millennium BCE to the 19th century CE. Read anticlockwise, the same objects illustrate the contact between China and the West throughout the centuries (14th–20th c. The collection continues with elegantly proportioned and finely decorated ware dating to the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), with porcelain from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1644 AD and 1644-1911 AD), and with snuff bottles and other objects made of semiprecious stone. His donation to the Benaki Museum, around 800 objects, is unique in being a time capsule of early 20th century taste and learning of Chinese art. A catalogue in English accompanies the exhibition. Feminism is best served with a cocktail

Spandex, sequins and killer dance moves collide in Australian stand-up Tessa Waters’ feisty physical comedy WOMANz, a celebration of love, life … and big hair. So… you’ve been described as the “manic pixie love-child of Cher and Mr Bean”…. How afraid should we be? I’m not gonna lie, this show is one wild ride, but think of it like an amazing first date. It’s okay to be a bit nervous, excited, ‘ooooh what’s gonna happen’? We bet you’re a real hit at parties? Depends on the party and the DJ. If you start playing ColdPlay things won’t go well. However, slap some Prince or James Brown on and I will lead the dancefloor all night. Fun fact: the first song I ever wrote when I was 4 years old was titled ‘P-p-pp-p-p-p-p-party time!’ I think this explains a lot about the woman I have grown into. What can we expect from a “physical comedy”? How much, if any, of the show is verbal? Physical Comedy does what is says on the tin, it is a hilarious hour of fun, hosted by the larger than life character WOMANz who comes from Olympus and has been sent to earth of party and teach us mortals how to love ourselves

turn a blind eye or become apathetic, you absolutely need to keep your sense of humour. Laughing at ourselves reminds us that we are human, that life is amazing and ridiculous and that there is always another way forward. And if the world is going to end, I want to go out dancing!

more. I talk to the audience directly, I tell jokes, I ask questions and the whole time I’m moving. Sometimes the joke is told with a dance, a shake of my booty, a hair flick. I use the full arsenal of comedy weapons I have available. WOMANz. The name says it all really. Is there a feminist foundation underpinning the show? Or is it just plain crazy fun? For me, Feminism is best served with a cocktail and a booty shake and that’s what WOMANz is all about. It will make men and women alike feel great about themselves and their bodies and go off into the night dancing. This show celebrates love, life and big hair. Speaking of which, in these strungout times, do you sometimes feel like we’ve lost the ability to laugh at ourselves? It feels like the world is turning upside down right now and at every turn we are reminded about the awful state of play of things. And while it’s important not to

Which high-profile female comics or performers do you have a lady crush on? Ha-ha what’s a ‘lady crush’? I picture a posh english woman getting all flustered, her white-gloved hands desperately fanning her face as she faints in a heap from watching a handsome man ride by on a horse. But to be serious: Amy Poehler, Dawn French, Nina Conti and Louis C K all blow my mind with their talent. You also perform regularly for children with your “How to be a Rockstar” project. Who makes the toughest audience? Kids are much harsher critics than grownups. I mean if an adult does not like the show, they will heckle or look bored, but if a kid doesn’t like it they will stand up and start doing something else, have a loud conversation, walk onto the stage and poke at things or at worst start crying. Luckily this doesn’t happen too much in my shows! Who would you most like to get stuck inside an elevator with? Someone that is handsome and friendly and that has brought snacks and wine. If you could rule the world for a day, what new law would you introduce first? Wow big question, I love it. Compulsory 30 second dance breaks at school and in the work place. WOMANz, June 16 at 9:30 pm (60 mins) Tickets € 10. Gazi Comedy Club, Evmolpidon 41, Tel: 210.345.5020, www.gazicomedy.com
