Milos’ beaches and vistas are truly unique and otherworldly. The island is a quiet, calm and mesmerising hidden gem that we are reluctant to even share! Must See and Do: If the weather permits, we recommend booking one of the dozens of day boat tours available from the port of Adamas. The tours depart daily around 9am and take you to a plethora of coves and beaches that are only accessible via boat. One of our favourites is Kleftiko--a majestic rock formation with incredible underwater life and scenery. Legend has it that Kleftiko was a pirate hideway for treasure (which has yet to be found)! Dive off the boat into the clear, sparkling water to partake in your own treasure hunt. Insider’s tip: Buy an underwater camera case from Adamas before setting off on your boat tour, you will thank us later. For the adventurous types looking for a bit of an ‘off the beaten path’ Indiana Jones type of adventure or if you’re just seeking haven from the meltemi winds, Tsigrado beach on the South East side of the island is an Insider favourite and best-kept island secret. With over 60 open-air cinemas to choose from in Attica alone, it is a Greek summer tradition that is truly alive and well. Having survived the crisis and real-estate developers, summer cinemas - with their director’s chairs and their compelling aroma of crackling popcorn - are a truly democratic space, where you can sip on a frappe, knock back a couple of beers, snack, cool off with ice-creams and even smoke while propping up your feet on the seats ahead. the book serves as a ready-reckoner for anyone interested in Greece’s bountiful wild greens that find their way into salads and pies – hortopitas. Susan Hitch, a literary critic and friend of the author’s sums up the book as a memoir of Penny Apostolidou’s excursions on the Peloponnesian mountainside: Found Things, captures the memory of place, of their own terroir, the knowledge which goes into collecting them, the arcana of where they grow. Every expedition ends with a visit to her mother, Poppy, whose ageing mind is deteriorating. Four expeditions and the old lady, each respected, attended to, carefully and unsentimentally described and estimated. So what are the things found? Well, sow thistles, hartwort, wild artichokes, dandelions, the pikralis, the sheep-radhiki and the king of them all, the red rhadiki; the knowledge, the easy certainty of Penny’s guides and mentors; and the ability to see the prized weeds not just on picturesque and photogenic hillsides but, better, in the churned earth of thistle-grown fields where the tractors
have been. Meanwhile Poppy remembers flashes of her Rhodesian youth, school, the shop, marriage; she mourns her dead cat, worries about her music – and, more and more, loses words and sentences. The paradox is that the detail, the humane vividness and honest clarity of Penny’s account of her mother declining, makes a path back into a sense of her mother as she was, whole and undeclined. This is a book of plain prose with a poetic sense of what it is to be mortal: that’s the finding. The young, Michelin-starred chef Nikos Karathanos, who won his first star at 28, brings his own culinary philosophy to the table every summer at Galazia Hytra. Adopting a classical style with an artisanal approach, Karathanos’s interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine is new and different with an interplay of different structures and aromas. The vine-leaf mousse is a masterpiece as are the New Age mousaka with tomato ice cream and the sea bass spiced with Cretan fennel and bottarga. Instinctive cuisine at its best. For those who’d like to savour simpler, wholesome Greek fare at the same venue at more modest budgets, Galazia Taverna is the answer.
In terms of setting, no other Italian restaurant in the city comes close. And in terms of cuisine, Il Tramonto is a living textbook of authentic Italian food and hospitality. Chef Stratos Kalathakis takes a back-to-basics approach and creates a menu that is devoid of any frills. With a cellar that boasts some of the finest labels, here is a restaurant that is easy on the pocket and an absolute must to treat first-time visitors to.
