Crete pays tribute

42nd Street plaque to be presented to Chania Municipality A new memorial marking a historic but often over-looked battle involving Australian and New Zealand (Anzac) forces in Crete in May 1941 is to be unveiled next week by Australia’s Ambassador to Greece, Ms Jenny Bloomfield. On 21 May, Australia’s top diplomat will present a specially-commissioned plaque produced in Melbourne to the Chania Municipality at the village of Tsikalaria as part of the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete commemorations. The‘42nd Street’ plaque - made of solid bronze, weighing 80kgs and measuring one-metre square - depicts a vital action in the last days of the Battle of Crete. The battle of 42nd Street on 27 May 1941 (the name was given by the troops to what in 1941 was a country lane), bought precious time for the Allies to retreat and make it to the evacuation point at Sfakia as the Nazi occupiers advanced. The 42nd Street site, on the outskirts of Chania, has never previously been marked. The plaque’s presentation to the Municipality is the culmination of three years of planning, and its production has been paid for largely by donations from the Greek community in Australia. The organisers of the 42nd Street Memorial are The Friends of 42nd Street Trust - a charitable organisation established by the family of Capt. Reg Saunders MBE - the first Aboriginal Australian to be made an officer in the Australian army. Saunders, a member of the Australian 2/7 Infantry Battalion, fought in Crete and at 42nd Street. The President of the Trust is Ms Glenda Humes, Capt. Reg Saunders’ eldest surviving

daughter. Ms Humes, who will be in Crete for the plaque’s presentation said, “We’re delighted to bring this plaque as a gift to the people of Crete, to mark a location which is forever part of Australia, Greece and New Zealand’s entwined history.” “The Cretan people looked after my father after the Battle of Crete - along with hundreds of other Australian and New Zealand soldiers - and we are forever grateful to the Cretan people who sacrificed so much during WWII.” Ambassador Bloomfield said she congratulated the Trust for the initiative, which has been strongly supported by the Australian Embassy in Athens. “Of all the events in the shared history between Australia and Greece, the Battle of Crete is the most significant,” she said. “Australians have never forgotten the resilience, the self-sacrifice, but also the camaraderie and compassion of the people of Crete. The events of those dark days forged a strong bond between our two na-

tions and are part of the personal stories of many Australians - such as the Saunders/Humes family, and many others. ” “As we mark the 73rd anniversary of the Battle, we would like to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives, and to express our heartfelt thanks to the people of Crete.” The plaque comprises English and Greek texts and sculpted illustrations, recounting the story of the action and its consequences. Attending the presentation will be many Anzac veterans’ families, including descendants of the New Zealand Maori troops who played a vital part in the battle.

If there’s one area that has thrived despite the crisis, it is the arts. Crises have always nurtured debate and artistic expression and it is in full evidence in Athens. With more galleries sprouting in the past year and participation at the annual Art-Athina intact, art is alive and well in Greece. Art Athina is unique among the plethora of international art fairs, many of which have cropped up in recent years. Established in 1993 by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association, “Art Athina started quite early in the European context”, says Alexis Caniaris, General Director of the event. “It’s not one of the biggest art fairs, but is one of the oldest in existence.” The Athenian art fair Art-Athina offers Greeks a unique chance to get an oversight into current artistic creation, gain exposure to a pot-pourri of global and Greek creativity, and glimpse, you could say, what is going on in the world of art. The latest incarnation of Art-Athina, which runs May 15-18 at the Taekwondo Stadium in Faliro, will feature displays by more than 58 galleries and 300 artists from Greece and abroad, as well as talks, exhibitions and performances. ent that despite the crisis, the visual arts sector is alive and kicking – and it’s kicking hard. True to its original concept of promoting the contemporary Greek art scene and establishing a constructive dialogue with international art, Art-Athina continues on an upward course through a process of constant development in terms of both structure and content. The concurrent presence of Greek and foreign art galleries, artists, museums, foundations and art publishers gives a unique opportunity for bringing together the entire spectrum of the art world and providing visitors with its most comprehensive picture.

Close Shaves

by Christina Michele Rios Photos by: Aspasia Koulyra/Fosphotos

For a civilisation that has prided itself in grooming their beards and nurturing them with lotions, pomades and beeswax, the barbershop is finally making a fashionable comeback after a few decades of being relegated to obscurity. A profile of one of the most iconic barbershops in the city. The Last Gentlemen’s Barbershop. As soon as you walk through Vasili Monastirlis’ doors in downtown Athens you are transported into a bygone era, into an age when time moved a bit slower, when facial grooming was considered an art form, when men pampered themselves and spent hours behind barbershop doors debating politics, sports and of course, women. After all, in the early 1900s barbershops were a form of a gentlemen’s club. At En Athenais 1928, time has stopped and tradition prevails--from the decor and vintage memorabilia such as the rotating barbershop pole, the authentic vintage chairs--one of which was sourced from New York City and used in a 1930s barbershop in Grand Central Station and another from 1945 previously owned by the Italian Mafioso, to the vintage photos and postcards adorning the walls. Vasili’s own signature style complete with suspenders and traditional men’s black and white oxford saddle shoes takes the experience to the next level; his manner of dressing is an antique art-form in itself. The full-service shave is second to none, starting with a fresh, hot towel, the swirling of the pig-bristle brush in foam along his client’s face and finally the careful movement of the straight blade ensuring the closest cut--all while relaxing

to the soundtrack of Eartha Kitt and Bing Crosby crooning through the speakers. If you are looking for a trim and touch-up or perhaps a new, retro-style haircut, Billy is your guy. He pays special attention to fades and is a perfectionist, sculpting away at each client’s mane as though it were a masterpiece. Let’s not forget that your array of treatments are finished with spritzes of cologne, after-shave and perhaps even

beard oil--it’s all about the special attention to detail. This kind of treatment and indulgence is something every man should experience at least once in his life. Mental health therapy session (in English or Greek--your pick) included free of charge with your appointment. En Athenais 1928, Sofokleous 5, Athens 10559, 210 322 0070
