MEDITERRANEAN CHARMS
On the run By Michael Sweet
Ten years ago, amateur runners were a rare species in Athens, eliciting stares as they picked their way between parked cars and other pavement obstacles. I remember children tugging on their parents’ sleeves as we jogged past, asking ‘Why are they running?’ Now, almost each weekend in spring and autumn there is a race or funrun of some sort, and every dusty track in this cement jungle jostles of a morning with joggers panting through their paces. If you want to feel like Rocky Balboa, power up the stairs to the top of Lycabettus Hill; but for more user-friendly routes, try some of the following: 1) The National Gardens: Pro runners favour this central oasis for three reasons. First, the canopy of trees ensures a temperature several degrees lower than elsewhere in the steaming city centre during summer (when Athens Marathon training peaks). Second, there are no cars or mopeds to mow runners down or puff fumes into their lungs. And third, it’s almost flat. Leave your water bottle at the hut just off Irodou Attikou, and follow the other runners around the 1.5km lap that snakes through the Gardens. Just don’t bring Fido in an attempt to combine your run with his walk – dogs aren’t allowed in the park. 2) Kallimarmaro: No, you can’t jog round the historic stadium (only on Marathon day), but climb the stairs to its left to enter from Archimidous Street, and you’ll find a measured 500m track that traces a shady horseshoe behind the upper echelons of the stadium. There are also parallel bars and other paraphernalia dotted between the trees for an al fresco post-run workout. 3) Filopappou: More challenging than the
above routes, thanks to the two hills it is well-nigh impossible to avoid (believe me, we’ve tried) as you loop round the monument. Start at Loumbardiaris chapel and jog along towards the Observatory, then hairpin back and turn right onto Pikioni’s cobbled road which gently but inexorably climbs uphill until you thankfully spot a track off to the right (not the one to the Dora Stratou Theatre, that’s a dead end) and follow it around the hill, down some rough steps and past the quarry where owls used to nest, then up a short sharp in-
cline and back to Loumbardiaris. Repeat. 4) Hymmetus: As you drive up from Papagou Cemetery, you’ll start to see parked cars with water bottles propped on their windscreens, and runners limbering up. The lure is a flattish, almost car-free (the road peters out into a dirt track) pinescented route marked by kilometre up to 10km, with great views over the city. 5) Schinias: This was one of our classic long run training routes. Start early, before the roads clog up with beach-goers, and park at Tymvos. Run down to the sea and follow the road past the fish tavernas and beach clubs, the rowing lake, coastal forest and wetlands, all the way to the end of Schinias beach. And then back, for a flat 20km run. Reward yourself with lunch at Heimona Kalokairi in Zoumberi afterwards, feeling you’ve fully deserved those desserts.
Claudine Carbonaro, a British-ItalianEgyptian expat who has been residing in Greece for over 30 years, recently launched her eclectic accessories and gift boutique ‘Zayiana’ in the centre of Glyfada. Having worked with top jewellery stores throughout Greece as a wholesaler for many years, she noticed a niche in the marketplace that she could fill. As a visitor in Athens, it is rather challenging to find Greek souvenirs that aren’t cheesy or kitsch. As an expat, we struggle with finding chic, unique boutiques to shop at and to take our visiting friends and family to--’Zayiana’ provides a solution to this dilemma. Claudine specialises in handwoven colourful bracelets with beautiful charms featuring the evil eye, hamsa and other assorted trinkets that are all handmade

GASTRONOMY
A la française by Sudha Nair-Iliades
Best known for its savoir-vivre and unique approach to gastronomy, France celebrates its unique culinary traditions bringing the best of French food and wine to the heart of Athens with the 4th French Gastronomy Festival. Get set for a French invasion until June 21! Other than cooking contests for young and up-coming chefs (see pic), pastry demonstrations by Master Pastry Chef Sébastien Serveau of the historical haute patisserie chain Maison Dalloyau and Hotel Ritz on June 13, B2B exhibitions, a French food and wine agora at the French Lycee in Aghia Paraskevi on June 18 - SOPEXA the organisation that promotes French food and wine in Greece, has a lot more in store to tickle your palates. Highlighting the fact that French cuisine can be as accessible as it can be esoteric, a French picnic on the lawns of the Megaron this weekend, a la bonne franquette, with French staples such as baguettes, cold cuts and cheese, hopes to entice Athenians to enjoy a simple French tradition outside the confines of a restaurant. Supervised by Spondi’s chef William Mahi, the event hopes to draw Athenians into a spirit of community and sharing, so integral to both Greek and French culinary traditions. During the French gastronomy month, 80 restaurants and 30 bars across the city will offer special French menus. The acclaimed three-star Michelin chef Michel del Burgo creates a special meal for the
Franco-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce on June 10 and a wine tasting will help you distinguish your Merlots from Chardonnays on May 30 at the Sofitel Athens Airport. Yet another open-air event, on the lawns of Parko Eleftherias is scheduled for June 20, this time to celebrate one more quintessentially French tradition – the aperitif! Insider weekly will carry detailed programme
highlights every Friday. For more info, visit sogallika.gr

Galazia Hytra / Galazia Taverna:
Il Tramonto
The young, Michelin-starred chef Nikos Karathanos, who won his first star at 28, brings his own culinary philosophy to the table every summer at Galazia Hytra. Adopting a classical style with an artisanal approach, Karathanos’s interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine is new and different with an interplay of different structures and aromas. The vine-leaf mousse is a masterpiece as are the New Age mousaka with tomato ice cream and the sea bass spiced with Cretan fennel and bottarga. Instinctive cuisine at its best. For those who’d like to savour simpler, wholesome Greek fare at the same venue at more modest budgets, Galazia Taverna is the answer.
In terms of setting, no other Italian restaurant in the city comes close. And in terms of cuisine, Il Tramonto is a living textbook of authentic Italian food and hospitality. Chef Stratos Kalathakis takes a back-to-basics approach and creates a menu that is devoid of any frills. With a cellar that boasts some of the finest labels, here is a restaurant that is easy on the pocket and an absolute must to treat first-time visitors to.
