UK comedy veteran Alistair Barrie talks black humour and British colonialism Sharp-suited British satirist Alistair Barrie appears alongside Greek funnyman George Hatzipavlou at the Michalis Kakogiannis Center on November 6-8; while on November 5, Barrie performs his stand-up show No More Stage Three, about his wife Emily’s battle with breast cancer, at the same venue, at a special event for Stohos, sponsored by Swarovski Hellas. Insider’s Amanda Dardanis caught up with him this week: Are Greek audiences scarier than British ones? Not in my experience. Opening with my entire Greek vocabulary seems to go down well, possibly because they realise that it is four more words than most British holidaymakers manage. How do you adapt your usual native material? I have performed in over thirty different countries. One of the advantages of the British Empire having been so huge is that everyone has an opinion on us, so I tend to spend most of my set saying sorry. Luckily a Brit apologising remains a novelty for Greek audiences. What will your Athens shows be about? burgh show ‘No More Stage Three’. I’m a topical comedian, but in January, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer which gave me perspective on what really constitutes bad news. She is doing brilliantly and I have been overwhelmed by the way she has handled her treatment, but being a comedian, I have also made quite a lot of jokes about it. My second stand-up mixes topical material
The wait is almost over. The famous hit musical arrives in Athens at the Badminton Theatre, Zografou from November 5-15. Discover why 50 million fans worldwide adore this joyous fable of love, friendship and favourite Abba anthems. Tickets from €15, abcd.gr/show/mamma-mia
with the observations of a globe- trotting comedian and suggestions on how to make the world a better place. Mostly through laughing at my jokes. Are Greeks as “on-board” with stand-up comedy as the British? What kind of audience participation have you experienced here before? Well previously, everyone sat and listened whilst facing in the right direction, laughed in the pauses and clapped quite frequently, which, short of handing me actual cash, is all you could want of an audience. Which culture has the blackest sense of humour, England or Greece? I think the British do. In stand-up terms, the genre is more established so we’ve probably had longer to explore the darker side stand-up is relatively new, they can be quite shocked when you discuss certain subjects – religion, terrorism, war. Speaking of gallows humour, you have been earning strong reviews for No More with cancer. I sincerely believe there is no subject that is off limits for comedy, and I don’t believe anyone who calls themselves a comedian would disagree. Laughter is one of the most human of responses, as is horror. There is a very good reason that the symbol for theatre is a comic mask and a tragic one – they are two sides of the same very human response to the world around us. And seeing as I’m performing in the country that brought us farts and erections from Aristophanes and murder and incest from Sophocles, Greek audiences should understand that better than most. Can cancer ever be funny? If it can’t then it would appear that me, my wife, her family, friends and rather a lot of audience members (and cancer patients) were laughing at completely the wrong thing! Will you be addressing the Greek crisis in your show? I might mention it once or twice. If VW can lie about their emission levels, maybe Germany should be more careful when they criticise the Greeks for their debt levels. Athens looks forward to welcoming you on stage, Alistair Barrie. We could all do with the laughs! Couldn’t we all… Tickets for both shows are available from www.mcf.gr or by phone: 210 3418579
