CITY LIFE

Athens on four paws Kalila Fahey and Phil Gatos sit down with pet photographer Hara Sklika, who captures the elaborate body language and sweet nature of Athens’ misunderstood strays. Can you tell us a bit about Buddy Tales and how you started photographing animals? Photography has been a lifelong passion for me. I have been practicing photography professionally for 7 years, taking workshops in Athens and classes with famous street photographers around the world. Throughout my travels, I started to explore different styles of photography out of my normal comfort zone of landscape and street photography. I wanted to combine my love for animals with my deep passion for photography and shifted my attention towards this new idea. I noticed a lack in pet photography in Greece and saw that it was not treated at the same range as it was internationally, so I created Buddy Tales pet photography to enrich this new pet-friendly culture in Athens. What is the best part and the most challenging about working with animals as your subjects? How do you get the animals to “pose”? Pet photography is one of the genres that

draw a lot of photographers into it, and it may look fun and easy when really the truth is that it is still a lot of fun but can be very difficult! You can never predict how a pet can react to a camera, or to new people, especially when photographing strays, who can be very afraid. I work hard on trying to create an artistic way to show their good manners and behavior, with natural lighting. I prefer to not force an animal to “sit” and “stay”, as this has to be a pleasant experience for both owner and the pet. I try and find new ways to capture the essence of the animals simply being themselves while I’m the one strategically positioning myself in order to capture the best light. What is your perspective on a pet friendly culture in Athens? I’m so proud to be a part of a growing community of pet friendly people in Athens. There are too many stray dogs and cats in this city that it’s incredibly comforting to see a rise in awareness and movement of a greater love for animals here. In the last few years I have seen more people in the parks with their pets, on the streets and in the cafes. It’s very exciting since Greece has a terrible reputation and history when it comes to animal cruelty. Where are the best places in Athens to

take your pets for a scenic walk? One of my favorite spots to take dogs is to Tatoi park, where there are dense forests and open fields. Another place that’s a favorite for Sandy (my dog) and I, and many of my clients, is the Sygrou Estate which has 950 acres of land covered by pine and trees. Its great for photographing and even better to let loose of the urban chaos. Then of course, the beaches in Varkiza, Vouliagmeni etc., when the weather is on our side. Can you recommend any of your favourite pet friendly places in Athens? • Puppies-Park in Maroussi, is a great dog park where dogs of all ages can play, swim and exercise under supervised personnel. puppiespark.gr • BlePapagalos- Brightly coloured, polite people, impeccable hospitality for our furry friends, go for a coffee and a retro photo-shoot! • Bartesera – in Kolokotronis, a beautiful place that shows special love to your pets and even takes care of the neighbourhood strays. • Burger Joint - A classic for many Athenians with incredible burgers, and the only place where your dog can sit right next to you and enjoy a specialized meal for him/ her in their own bowl! Be sure to check out these great places with your four legged friends. For more information on Buddy Tales Pet Photography, facebook.com/BuddyTales. petphotography

BOOK REVIEW

The eternal allure of the femme fatale Dr. Patrick Quinn, Dean of the Liberal Arts Department at the American College of Greece explores the role of that most compelling of literary characters – the femme fatale and that of what he describes as ‘the New Woman’ in an engaging new book, “Patriarchy in Eclipse”, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. While the femme fatale - a mysterious, seductive woman whose charms ensnare her lovers, often leading them into compromising, dangerous, and deadly situations, has been an archetype of European literature and art since the early 1800s - she makes her appearance in American literature only towards the end of the nineteenth century. Dr. Quinn seems to suggest that the predominant patriarchal culture in American society and its puritanical values kept this intriguing figure at bay. What Dr. Quinn finds particularly curious is the intellectual and artistic angst these two characters generated amongst the sophisticated, educated male American population and the lengths to which they went to keep these heroines buried - lest they make inroads into male-dominated preserves. The book takes us through a who’s who of

early femme fatales that have dominated mythology, literature, art and music - from Lilith, Eve, Mary Magdalene, Circe, Medusa, Helen of Troy to Cleopatra to later-day bad girls such as Rhona Broughton’s Belinda or the Gibson Girl – all women who were portrayed as having the potential to ruin men. An intimidating, morally ambiguous woman who had no qualms of using her feminine wiles such as beauty, charm, and sexual allure to achieve power, domination and ultimately, revenge. The femme fatale is smart and devious and will do the impossible to get what she wants, including flaunting her sexiness, but she is not a bimbo. She sets her sights, weighs her choices and follows through with a carefully executed plan. As Dr. Quinn explains, “The femme fatale, by definition, is a temptress who revels in drawing attention to herself, in making herself as conspicuous as possible; she pushes respectability to its limit while still retaining the veneer of fashionable without being vulgar – or else she’d be ostracized from the bourgeois society where she hunts for her male victims.” It is only after WWI that the femme fatale comes into her own in America – through the integral roles played in films noirs in the 30s – and later on through roles immortalized by Sharon Stone in Basic Instincts or Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction Whether a victim of misogyny, fear of witchcraft, a threat to traditional female gender roles or her feared control of the sexual realm, the femme fatale remains a divergent figure but one that is eternally fascinating. Patriarchy in Eclipse is a brilliant contemplation on our prejudices as a society towards these characters at the turn of the century.
