CITY LIFE
Insider’s top ice-cream scoops in Athens Nothing like an indulgent frozen treat to please inner and actual kids alike on a hot Greek summer day. Whether you’re looking for a decadent sundae or a graband-go ice cream sandwich, we’ve got you covered with our guide to the best ice cream shops in Athens. Waffle House: Waffle House debunks several myths at once: one, that a success story on an island can’t be repeated in the city and secondly, that ice-creams are restricted to the summer. Born in Naxos, and flourishing in Vouliagmeni, Waffle House’s quirkily colourful ice-cream store that spills on to the pavement, is choc-abloc with die-hard ice-cream aficionados who schlep all the way here for a delectable scoop of its sorbets and ice-creams throughout the year. With a view over Vouliagmeni’s scintillating bay, Waffle House also offers (as its name suggests) hot waffles with a range of toppings. Insider favourites: The lemon-pie ice-cream is a hands-down winner as is the melon sorbet for those looking for refined subtlety, but heaven for chocolate-lovers is a scoop of the Ferrero Rocher ice-cream. Leof. Poseidonos 17, Vouliagmeni. Tel: 210.896.1227 Le Greche: Evi Papadopoulou’s gelateria is hard not to miss as there is usually a long line snaking around it but it’s well worth the wait! Italian-trained and a stickler for sourcing her ingredients from small producers, the menu here proudly proclaims the provenance of all the delectable goodies that go into the ice-creams.
Le Greche’s ice-creams have this inexplicable texture that marry richness and freshness in one cool swirl – to perfection! Try the ice-cream sandwiches topped with grilled pistachios, any of the melt-inthe-mouth fruit sorbets or the chocolate ice-cream with rum and prunes. Insider’s favourites: Ricotta with bergamot and Aperol, and mascarpone with figs. Mitropoleos 16A, Syntagma. Tel: 216.700.6458
bite and zest to give it its complex texture. Simply divine. 40 Afroditis Street, Varkiza. Tel: 210.984.4413 Solo Gelato: A gastronomic institution, Nikos Christogiorgos’ Solo Gelato has been perfecting the art of gelato-making for over 60 years! Halandri residents have been charmed by this man’s frosty creations for years and its time other Athenians checked out its strawberry-basil or its super-tarty mango sorbet. Insider favourites: Nothing beats a dark chocolate sorbet but have a go at the crème brulee with caramelized figs too. A.Papandreou 44, Halandri. Tel: 210.681.3622 Marco Mure Dolci e Gelati Marco Mure has been consistently teasing our palates since the ‘80s when the present owner’s parents set up shop in the tony suburb of Kifissia. Venture beyond the store’s classic flavours such as zabaglione or zuppa inglese and dig in to the summery freshness of a watermelon sorbet. Other sorbets Insider recommends include the granular pomegranate and the sublime green apple sorbet. Kifisias 252, Kifisia. Tel: 211.400.6499 Fatto a Mano Peristeri might not seem your typical gastronomic destination, but you’d be surprised by the foodie havens you might find here. At Fatto a Mano, Giannis Niktaris converts plain-Jane flavours with a Cretan twist into sublime indulgences, so do not bypass the humble vanilla here but definitely follow it up with a swirl of rakomelo ice-cream. Kosta Varnali 21, Peristéri. Tel: 210.577.7407
L’Atelier de Patisserie: A little pastry chain, with another branch in Glyfada, run by the young and hugely talented George Christodoulopoulos, L’Atelier de Patisserie is not your typical ice-cream destination but figures in our best scoop list for its exquisite sorbets. Insider favourites are the Raspberry sorbet, power-packed with crunch and flavor and the lemon sorbet which has the perfect mix of tang,

Koufonisi:
An idyllic getaway Nestled away in the Cyclades lies a tiny cluster of islands known as Koufonissia. Insider visits Pano Koufonisi, a 4 sq meter treasure trove of beaches, charming rock formations and the most populated of the smaller Cycladic islands with 366 permanent residents, the majority of them fishermen. The Chora is dotted with picturesque cafes, bars, hotels, little shops and two small supermarkets. Anyone that has visited Koufonisi will usually tell you it is their favourite island and it’s easy to understand why. With its gorgeous coastline of beach after beach of sparkling aquamarine water kissing powdery white sand even the most digitally-addicted tourist unplugs and succumbs to its charms. The most unique feature of Koufonisi is that you cannot bring a car over on the Skopelitis boat so you must either walk or ride bicycles everywhere - the only problem is selecting which beach to spend your day at! Insider Favourites SWIM & SEE. Just walk North on the Eastern Coast and enjoy the stunning coastline starting with Megali Ammos, Finikas, Platia Pounda, Pori and finally Gala. Pori Beach: Calm clear blue waters, fine light sand, the half-moon shape protects it from the Meltemi wind and the shallow water makes it perfect for swimming. There are two tavernas here. Be sure to
