With the third edition of the Athens Half Marathon on May 4 attracting a record number of participants, Vassilis Sevastis, General Secretary of SEGAS, the organizer of the event is justifiably proud. “The happy smiles of the 11.000 citizens of all ages that finish at the Syntagma Square justify totally our main goal, which is no other than getting people on the roads of Athens, to change the image of the city centre and make Athens a bright capital with no cars at all even for one day.” says Sevastis. Since its inception three years ago, The Athens Half Marathon has seduced a population of couch potatoes to take to the streets and to and embrace longdistance running as a way of life. Timed six months ahead of the Athens Classic Marathon in November, the race is seen by most first-time runners as training for the big event later in the year. Emile Zatopek, the Czech long-distance athlete famously said, “If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon.” Wanting to share in the experience are apparently a growing number of Athenians, both young and old. Sevastis confirms, “The Athens Half Marathon has been established in the conscious of everyone as the third big-
gest event in Greece and it has actually become a major national, cultural, tourist and sport event, addressed to the citizens of the entire country. We owe that to the participants, the those working for this event and to our sponsors, and mainly the Major Sponsor of the Athens Half Marathon, BMW Hellas, whose contribution will further enforce the event.” Around 12,000 runners are expected to run on the streets of Athens, joining one of the events’ races, which include the Half Marathon Race, a 5km Road Race, a 3km Road Race and a 1000m Race for Special Olympics and Disabled. Motivated by the huge response to the event and the communal participation of both athletes and spectators, SEGAS and the Municipality of Athens hope to establish the Athens Half Marathon as a regular annual highlight in the city’s life. With the race being run in front of the Greek Parliament at Syntagma Square, the Athens Half Marathon is a unique way to showcase the beauty of this vibrant city and the resilient dynamism of its citizens as well as an occasion to experience the magic and hospitality that Athens has to offer. CIty LIFE
Big Toys for Big Boys
As every year, Poros is venue for one of the marquee events of the yachting calendar this month, with the Argo-Saronic island playing host to the East Med Yacht Show, a key industry event in Greece’s continued quest to develop maritime tourism. A total of 75 super yachts and professional recreation boats valued at more than 500 million euros will grace the shores of Poros from May 2 and May 6 attracting charter agencies and brokers, travel agents and tour operators from all over the world. The thirteenth edition of the event, one of the world’s top four yacht shows, confirms that Greece has no shortage of luxury yachts and cruising in the Mediterranean remains the ultimate luxury travel experience. The maritime tourism sector has seen considerable growth in recent years, with yacht bookings increasing from several markets abroad. In Greece, there are just over 3,000 professional yachts sailing under a Greek flag, with that number rising each year, as the development of sea tourism is seen as a key dimension for the country’s economy. Greece has several obvious natural advantages compared with other destinations, such as the sheer number of islands and destinations available – making events such as the East Med Yacht Show vital to its continuing growth. “Put into a global perspective, the Poros show is the most important in the eastern Mediterrenean,” Thrassivoulos Kanaris, Managing Director of all4yachting and a regular exhibitor told Insider Weekly. “There are only four shows of this stature around the world,” he explains. “The prime event is the Worldwide Yachting Association show in Genoa which follows Poros. The other two shows are the exhibitions in St Martin and Antigua, in the Caribbean.”
