Spring has sprung and there’s no better time to see Greece at its most breathtaking. Poppies and wild grasses stud summer’s barren landscapes; the turquoise bays are clear of serried ranks of sunloungers and other high-season detritus, and the sea tempts for a circulation-zinging plunge. Pack everything from swimsuit and sandals to woollies for chilly evenings, and take your pick from the following weekend getaways. 1) Poseidonion, Spetses. A shortish hop from Athens, among this Saronic isle’s numerous stately mansions none are statelier than the Poseidonion Grand Hotel. This belle époque gem has a prime seafront location, idyllic swimming pool in a lavender-scented garden, beautiful tiling, and an alluring menu for drinks and bites on the verandah. Rent a bike to circulate the pine-studded island (passing the longempty Anargyrios School of The Magus fame), dip in the crystal-clear coves, and feast at Orloff in the old harbour. www.poseidonion.com 2) Oniropetra, Karpenisi. It’s on the main road to Karpenisi, but nevertheless manages a bucolic setting, with a stream tinkling through the chestnut-fringed valley beyond and a neighbouring field of deer. If you can leave the comfort of the hotel – fireplaces and cosy rugs abound, alongside statement pieces from Love It decor shop – further along the valley you’ll find a tempting trail run around the derelict Athletic Centre (a pre-Olympics white elephant); or visit Koryschades, a picturesque renovated village. www.oniropetra.gr 3) Notos, Kardamyli. Just an hour from Rafina, Marmari features some of the capital’s closest crowd-free beaches. High in the hills above one such sandy stretch is Celini Suites, an unobtrusive haven of Cocomat furnishings, infinity pool, distant sheep-bells, and owner Vaso’s delectable homemade pies. Once ensconced by the pool, with the Petalioi gulf sparkling below, it’s hard to find an incentive to move, but the whirling kite-surfers at Megali Ammos beach and the memorable meze at seafront Akrogiali tavern might just do the trick. www.celinisuites.com
5) Lost Unicorn, Tsagarada, Pelio. Behind the vast plane tree in Agia Paraskevi village square, a 19th century Pelio mansion facade hides an English country house within, complete with Blue Willow crockery, library and rose garden. This charming hotel is a labour of love for Greek-English owners Christos (the chef) and Claire, who are welcoming, attentive yet discreet hosts. New York-style brunching has become increasingly popular in Athens and the city’s trendiest crowd choose to end the week indulging in a languorous brunch that stretches from 10 to 3. More and more restaurants, cafés and bars have started serving eggs and pancakes but here is an insider’s guide to some of the more authentic brunch experiences in the city. Nixon. The place that first introduced brunch to Athenians. Considered by many as the best in town, its Sunday menu includes eggs benedict, eggs florentine, pancakes, burgers, BLT sandwiches, salads and many desserts, as well as Mimozas and the ever-popular Bloody Mary, for those who want to get over Saturday’s hangover in style. The city will be awash with spokes and spandex on Saturday, May 10 as it hosts cyclists from all over the world for the second edition of Athens’ premiere track and fixed gear street race: The 1896 Classic Marathon Race Revival. Organised by 48×17, a project space based in central Athens devoted to urban cycling, the race is an 87-kilometre route from the Acropolis to the village of Marathon and back again. A total of 40 international riders will compete so if you are out and about in the city check where you can cheer them on. The race is designed to pay homage to the only road race of the first modern Olympic Games which took place on April 12, 1896. At that time the bicycle was quite a novice idea people were not familiar with. Gears, brakes and deralleurs were not yet even invented and all bicycles were fixed

gear and brakeless. Five Greeks registered for the race, one of them Aristides Konstantinides, and a few foreign cyclists including the German August von Gödrich and the Briton Edward Battel. Konstantinidis, one of the first bicycle enthusiasts in the country and a member of the first Greek cycling club, won the race despite his bicycle breaking down on the way back to Athens. Legend has it that he borrowed a bicycle from a spectator to finish the race. A first revival was held after 116 years in 2012 and aims to bring together athletes, city riders and track bike enthusiasts in an endurance race using a fair yet quirky street cycling set-up.
