The shrill cries of children frolicking on the beach; paliatzides prowling the streets in their rundown pick-up trucks urging a feng-shui purging of old plastic chairs and cane furniture on their megaphones; bursts of startling fuchsia bougainvillea spilling off balconies; street salesmen plying carts piled high with watermelons and potted plants; ladies emulating sartorial codes set by Grecian goddesses as they take in a performance at the Herod Atticus draped in off-white cheesecloth dresses; cafes populated by tanned bodies cooling off with long, tall glasses of frappe; the jangling
publisher’s note of dice against a backgammon board; the crackle of pop-corn mingling with the fragrance of jasmine at open-air cinemas; cats sun-bathing on the Acropolis’ slippery marble steps; throngs of colour-coordinated tourists descending on Syntagma to watch young evzones defy the heat and the stares in their weather-inappropriate uniforms; TV screens blaring from balconies intercepted only by the clatter of cutlery and the whirring of fans; the tantalizing smells of grilled sardines off a neighbour’s terrace; mounds of roughly hewn slices of cold watermelon, melon and cherries offered on- the- house at tavernas; retired pensioners nursing their opaque glasses of ouzo; a bright yellow moon hovering periliously low; crickets trying to raise the decibels by competing with noisy racquet-wielding beach-veterans; and the warm sea, inviting you to dive into its crystal-clear depths.

Award-winning graphic designer, fluent in English French and Greek, Michel moved to Athens in 1997 to create Studio ZIP, after a long and interesting career in France and Canada. His background in Marketing (Paris 1983), is a major asset in his creative approach. He provides his services both in Greece and abroad. Born to a French-Spanish father and American mother, Christina is no stranger to learning about new cultures, languages and exploring the world. Having lived between the U.S. and Europe her entire life, she developed a passion for travel, the arts, communication and fashion. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and worked for a number of Luxury Fashion Brands. She relocated to Athens in 2008 and never looked back, the islands and warm lingering summers continue to inspire her and have captured her heart.

Born and raised in Athens in a Greek-Cypriot family, Georgia studied Political Science and History in Athens and did a Masters in International Relations in the UK. She loves music and travelling and tries to GEORGIA PAPAIOANNOU combine the two as often as possible. She enjoys taking long walks in the city, discovering new places and faces and then sharing her tips with the rest of the world.
Born to a Cypriot father and French-Greek mother, Royce is presently specialising in Shipping Management. Having grown up in the southern suburbs by the sea, Royce is into water-sports. He started sailing at the age of 6 and you can find him surfing the waves in Vouliagmeni on most weekends. He is the youngest member of the Insider Publications team.

Nadine Daouti, an Athens native is a creative and free spirit who finds inspiration everywhere. She moved to the U.K. to attend the University of Arts London at London College of Fashion for a Foundation degree in Art & Design and then received her B.A. in Graphic design from the University of the Arts London at Camberwell College. Nadine has worked extensively as a Graphic Designer in the Fashion Industry as well as for Magazines and Advertising Firms.
Dimosthenis Therianos was born and raised in Athens. He studied accounting at TEI Piraeus and continued with studies in Human Resources. Always criss-crossing the city on his motorbike to meet his clients, he makes the most of the opportunity to visit Athens’ trendiest neighbourhoods and to keep a lookout for new cool restaurants and bars in town.

A Rhapsody of Arts and Culture on the Isles Citronne Gallery in Poros presents several summer exhibitions with a common thread--the subject, ‘Impressions of Time.’ Three contemporary artists, each with a distinct path and aesthetic trace the relationship between time and space. Costas Varotsos, Sotiris Sorogas and Constantine Zenakis recount time and mark space through their personal points of view and commentaries on timeless reality. Samos Festival features a solo exhibition at Art Space Pythagorion by artist Nevin Aladag entitled Borderline. Exploring different types of borders—geographical, cultural, social, political and ideational. The origin of the borderline can also be seen as an act of drawing, something interesting to examine from an artistic perspective. She explores the metaphors, vagueness and buffer zones of these concepts in a poetic aspect in her multi-medium exhibition. Paros Jazz Festival is an international, intensive jazz course for music students and musicians in collaboration with the National Conservatory of Paris (CRR), taking place in the traditional village of Lefkes. Deste Foundation Project Space at the Slaughterhouse in Hydra presents ‘The Secret of the Phaistos Disc’ by Pawel Althamer. This is an interactive project combining sculpture with performance with a series of experimental ways of social communication and creativity with a focus on the nature of families and relationships. The artist’s family is the main subject matter of this work, his children serve as protagonists and are called upon to create a stage in which one can analyse and explore relations, correlations and asterisms lying behind existing social structures. Italian National Day: The Italian Embassy celebrated its National Day in style, dodging errant showers and hailstorms, just ahead of Italy taking on the European Union Presidency. National Hellenic Museum Annual Gala: More than 500 hundred friends and supporters of the National Hellenic Museum (NHM) gathered at Chicago’s Radisson Blu Aqua hotel, on May 31 for the Museum’s annual gala. Guests were welcomed by traditionally bedecked donkeys along with young children dressed in Greek Island costumes. 1.The evening’s highlight was the joint announcement by NHM Chairman, John P. Calamos Sr (seen here with George Krokos and Dean Metropoulos) and 2. The Field Museum President, Richard Lariviere (seen here with Bill Parkinson), detailing the partnership between the two museums to co-present the US exhibition of the largest Greek antiquities collection in more than a generation. «The Greeks: From Agamemnon to Alexander the Great» will feature more than 500 pieces and artifacts from 22 Greek museums beginning in November 2015. Two historic Greek American organizations, The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) and the Greek American Restaurant Association (GARA), were honored during the evening for their philanthropic work both in the U.S. and in Greece. At a separate event, The NHM and the National Hellenic Society hosted renowned author and journalist Nicholas Gage, in a fascinating and moving presentation, “A Writer’s Odyssey.” Foreign correspondent for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press, Mr. Gage is best known for his autobiographical Eleni, translated into 32 languages. Gage’s next book, A Place for Us, is a moving saga of the immigrant experience, while his latest book, Greek Fire, is a dual biography of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis. estled away in the Mikro Cyclades lies the tiny bauble of islands known as Koufonissia. Koufonissia consists of several islands, including uninhabited Keros and inhabited Pano (meaning ‘upper’) and Kato (meaning ‘lower’) Koufonisi. Insider visits Pano Koufonisi, a 4 square meter treasure trove of beaches, charming rock formations and the most populated of the Mikro Cyclades with 366 permanent residents, the majority of them fishermen. The Chora is dotted with picturesque cafes, bars, hotels, little shops and two small supermarkets. Anyone that has visited Koufonisi will usually tell you it is their favourite island and it’s easy to understand why. The island is a destination for those seeking to disconnect, unplug and enjoy the original and authentic laid-back Greek lifestyle. It is the most peaceful and relaxed island with the most gorgeous coastline of beach after beach of sparkling aquamarine water kissing the fine, white sand. The most unique feature of Koufonisi is that you cannot bring a car over on the Skopelitis boat so you must either walk or ride bicycles everywhere. Upon walking along and exploring the Eastern coast of the island, you will encounter breathtaking scenes of beach after gorgeous beach—the only problem is selecting which one to spend your day at!

Just walk North on the Eastern Coast and enjoy the stunning coastline starting with Megali Ammos, Finikas, Platia Pounda, Pori and finally Gala. Pori Beach: calm clear blue water, fine light sand, the half-moon shape protects it from the Meltemi wind and the shallow water makes it perfect for swimming. There are two tavernas here. Be sure to venture behind the tavernas with your camera to see one of the most spectacular cliffs and views, you’ll thank us later! Gala Beach: an open enclave surrounded by mountains with a tiny private pebbled beach deep inside, connected to the sea via a narrow corridor opening. A hidden gem located just past Pori Beach. Piscine aka Devil’s Eye: a natural forming lagoon inside a rock formation. The perfect spot for a quick swim.

If there is one island that stands at the crossroads of history, steeped in centuries of multiculturalism, it is Rhodes. Palace of the Grand Master: Located at the highest point of the Medieval Town of Rhodes, the Palace of the Grand Master served as the Headquarters of the Knights of Saint John, during Medieval Times. Today it is a museum and venue for cultural events. Archaeological Museum of Rhodes: The exhibits at the Archaeological Museum include ceramics, statues and jewelry from the 9th Century BC. Mandraki: Mandraki is a unique collection of Belle-Epoque and Medieval buildings. Acropolis of Rhodes: The Acropolis of Rhodes overlooks the entire city of Rhodes and the shores of Turkey, across the sea. Museum of Modern Greek Art: The Modern Greek Art Museum presents extensive painting and engraving collections. Lindos: One of the most photographed sites in the Aegean and possibly the most famous landmark of Rhodes, Lindos is a historically interesting site with picturesque villages and crystal clear beaches. Kallithea Springs: Best known for its healing waters, it has served as a film set and is a major attraction. The Valley of the Butterflies: The Valley of the Butterflies is a unique natural site famous for millions of butterflies (tiger moths). Filerimos: At its summit, where the Acropolis of Ialysos once stood, is the Monastery of the Virgin of Filerimos, a sacred place for both the Knights and the locals. Don’t miss Via Crucis, a pathway decorated with scenes from the Passion of the Christ that leads up to a 23m high cross. Ancient Kamiros: The ancient city of Kamiros is one of the most wellpreserved ancient cities of Greece. Prassonisi: A small island at the southern tip of Rhodes, Prassonisi is separated from the mainland depending on the tide, as the sea withdraws allowing access to the island by car or on foot. It is also a surfer’s paradise. Symi: Symi, connected to Rhodes by ferry daily, is one of the smallest islands of the Dodecanese and unfolds itself as a colourful amphitheatre above the main harbour. Chalki: Just next to the island of Rhodes, Chalki gets her name from the copper (chalkos) mines that once made it rich. With beautiful architecture and exquisite beaches, Chalki is ideal for a day trip with daily connections to Rhodes or Kamiros Scala.

For market leader Athenian Brewery that sustains 26,000 jobs in Greece and accounts for 0,1% of Greece’s GDP, along with setting marketing trends, also comes the onus of being socially responsible. Alexander Koch, the dynamic Marketing Director of Athenian Brewery in conversation with Sudha Nair-Iliades.

thenian Brewery brews and bottles some of the most popular beer brands in the Greek market and is the largest producer and distributor of beer in Greece since 1963. How do you hope to retain your fizz in the beer market after 50 long years?
The second activity is our employee volunteerism programme, where our employees offer both personal and work time to support 3 NGOs in Athens, Patras and Thessaloniki. It is very important to mention that the NGOs were proposed and selected by our employees.
Over our 50 years of presence in the Greek market, we have built strong ties with Greek consumers and we state this in our motto “We are here.� We continue to invest in our breweries and in the market by introducing new products. In our view the best way to keep the category interesting is through innovations which satisfy the everchanging consumer needs and contribute to the economy. You can expect a lot of exciting new products coming out of our breweries in the coming years.
How is the beer industry coping with the crisis? To what extent does weather and tourism impact beer consumption?
Athenian Brewery is the leading brewery in Greece and it takes big brands to make a big impact. Two of the CSR activities that you are particularly proud of? We strongly believe that these days big companies have to insist on their contribution to the economy and society. Therefore, we continue to contribute through targeted CSR activities that create value for the economy, employment and agricultural production. Among many, I would like to mention two activities: First, is our barley sourcing programme which started in 2008, being the first and largest in our market. It was a great opportunity to localize the source of our barley, the key ingredient for our beers. We have now achieved a steady supply of high quality materials and at the same time provided an important source of income to Greek farmers and the local economy. We are very proud to have 3.000 farmers participating. We expect that by the end of this year we will have enough Greek barley for our entire production.
As with the entire economy, the beer industry has also been affected by the crisis. Consumers have significantly less disposable income and this has created different buying behaviors. We believe though that the total beer market has enough room for growth. The per capita in consumption in Greece is still relatively low compared to the European average. Beer is still mainly consumed during summer and at specific occasions. We see it as our responsibility to keep beer exciting and to create a dynamic portfolio and introduce new products that meet the latest consumer demands and trends. Last year we launched Amstel Radler (an innovative proposition of beer and lemon) and we continue this year with Amstel Free (0% alcohol and rich beer taste), Alfa Strong and Affligem (an abbey ale with 1000 years of heritage). These new products will attract new consumers and make beer relevant at different occasions. If you were to raise a glass of beer, to what would it be? I would raise a glass to Greece and its people. I have lived in Greece for 2,5 years now and things have not been easy here the last few years. I have a big respect for the way people have coped and adjusted to this new reality. Greece as a country has so much to offer and I wish for this magic and beauty to shine again. Actually I sense that things are changing for the better now. Spirits and optimism are rising again, i which will drive further progress. Let’s drink a beer to that!

vision, Mr. Costas Raptis. Costas is the 5th Master in the history of the House of Metaxa and has held this prestigious position for 27 years. He guarantees the continuity of the authentic character and taste of the spirit through careful, deliberate and an almost obsessive process. Costas works with fruits, flowers and herbs to create the renowned smoothness that Metaxa is known for the world over. Here, Costas teaches me about the blending process of the additional ingredients in the beloved Spirit.
How is Metaxa made? Metaxa is made with wine distillates that patiently age for years and sometimes decades in French oak casks in the deep, dark cellars in Kifissia. Muscat wine from the Aegean islands of Samos and Limnos are added, bringing a balance and sweetness. Finally, a touch of a secret bouquet including May roses from the Peloponnese and local Mediterranean herbs which round off the taste to create the smoothness that has won awards and consistently broken the mould since its inception in 1888. We enter a room in the cellar that is reminiscent of a chemistry laboratory, complete with beakers, test tubes and petri dishes. Costas invites us to try and replicate the Metaxa blend, providing us with all the ingredients necessary to create it and giving us subtle hints regarding the ratios. Attempt after attempt, no matter how hard we try, we realise this task is more than impossible and there is in fact a reason Costas is referred to as a ‘Master.’ Metaxa is a unique spirit in that, it does not contain chemicals created in labs—it is natural and created by ingredients that are grown in nature. This makes it a difficult task to recreate the same taste and consistency year after year, in the face of varying temperatures, climates, rainfall and other factors. Therefore, the maturation time of the ingredients varies—Costas uses his own taste and knowledge to ensure the consistent flavour in every single bottle.
Private Tasting Session This was a memorable and unique experience for me as I had never tasted Metaxa before; to taste this amber beverage for the first time under these extraordinary circumstances was a blessing and something I will cherish forever. We were accompanied by Costas into a large and impressive room that reminded me of a glamorous, secret society’s boardroom and we were seated around a roundtable. erhaps the greatest shopping challenge for women is the summer ritual of buying swimwear. Marie Zacharaki, whose company Saltwater stocks the best brands in swimwear, had the exact same problem when “swimwear was relegated to the very end of the store and often lumped together with frumpy undergarments.” She converted her personal quest into a business empire and is today, the only highend swimwear concept store in Europe. Ms. Zacharaki hopes to translate her success here to premium resorts and destinations across the world. And she has the fashion pedigree to do it. A graduate of Europe’s premier postgraduate school of design, Domus Academy in Milan, she studied Fashion Design under the tutelage of Gianfranco Ferré and shoe-king and purse-maker to the world, Diego Della Valle of Tod’s. But it was her 6-year stint with Jean-Paul Gaultier, which she describes as “a fashion lab where we dressed Madonna in corsets and tassles,” that really got her creative juices flowing. Excerpts from an interview with Sudha Nair-Iliades: Why swimwear? I loved the summer, sea, swimming… and swimsuits. When I started out, swimwear was grossly underestimated as a fashion garment and most designers did not even have a dedicated swimwear line. For all their skimpiness, women’s swimsuits are complicated garments that need to cover a wide range of activities and body types. Ideally a swimsuit should compress some places, reveal others, not ride up and come undone with the first wave - all while making the wearer feel comfortable and confident. The canvas is really small, so it’s more challenging to create a swimsuit that feels good and is innovative and fashion-forward. How was Saltwater born? After my stint in Milan, I moved back to Greece and worked for Ralph Lauren and later looked after the Benetton account here. Meanwhile I was trying to sell swimwear from JPG’s Junior line. My first calling came when I was at the International exhibition for lingerie and swimwear in Bologna in the late ‘90s. Hidden obscurely in a little corner was Pin-Up. My eyes just sparkled when I spotted it and it was the beginning of a great partnership with designer Jerry Tomolini and the birth of Salt-
water. Pin-Up first became big in Greece first and then took the rest of Europe by storm. It was also the time that Greek women were getting more fashion-conscious. A whirlwind of scouting at fairs in Miami, LA, Paris, New York, Milan followed but I owe it to my parents who let me travel since I was a kid, for my trained eye. Saltwater is today the best high-end swimwear company in Greece and we are present at all premium resorts and high end boutiques here. Where do you take it from here? The global swimwear industry is estimated to be a $3.5 billion-a-year-and-growing business, with women’s swimwear accounting for 70%percent of the market. We’ve managed to collect the crème de la crème of this very competitive business and we intend to expand to destinations that reflect our brand and our customer profile such as St.Barth’s, St.Tropez, Ibiza. Plans are also afoot to set up our new concept store on Vouliagmenis Ave. including a home line by Jonathan Adler. There will be street art from NY, things I have picked from all over the world – and even a store corner reserved for pet portraits! How do you keep interest in your boutiques alive? We keep bringing in new top-of-the-line brands and we’re sought after by the biggest names in fashion. Our reputation lets us have big brands like Italian premium clothing brand Dondup (where LVMH acquired a 40%stake!) partner with us – a great honour for us and a testimony to our standing in the fashion business. We had Cavalli last year, this year we have Jimmy Choo. Plus we stock the best beach-wear – from kaftans, hats, shoes you-name-it. I keep looking out for new talent and in fact, we’ve just scouted a line out of the US called Ocean Drive, whom we represent all over Europe. We’re now moving into clothing so that we’re able to cover the needs of a high-end boutique across all seasons. Any advice for someone getting into the fashion industry? Create your own crazy rules. Entertainment When we sat down with Serbian-Canadian actress, Stana Katic of “Castle” which airs on FOX LIFE, we never anticipated the type of response it would elicit from Social Media! Hundreds of likes, shares, re-tweets, comments and messages later from fans (both ours and her so-called ‘Stanatics’), we truly understand why this endearing woman has won the hearts of audiences globally. Stana is a quirky, down to earth, warm, funny and deeply analytical woman and of course, needless to say, GORGEOUS. Christina Michele Rios sits down with Stana for an interview at the Astir Palace. How do you like Greece, what is your impression? Has the reality of Athens been different from your expectations? The people here are very generous, happy to share their language, culture and beautiful historical spots. It’s been a real privilege. This is my first trip to Athens, in the past I have been to Thessaloniki. The architecture is much more modern in Athens than I anticipated, I didn’t know how many ruins I would see as I just came in from Florence where you are surrounded by much older architecture. Over here, the architecture is newer and also the city is much more spread out. It’s surprising that Greeks are so connected with the water, everyone has to go to the beach. It’s therapy for them! It is! Everyone enjoys their seafood--by the water. And people have been shocked that unfortunately I am not going to any of the islands on this trip. (Then, in her best, dead-on, thick Greek accent she says, «And then they tell me...But this is not Greece!») What were you doing in Florence? I am working on a film there right now called «The Tourist» that is centered around this game Calcio Storico (i.e. historic football). It has been played for hundreds of years in Italy and still is to this day. It’s a combination of football and battle--its very aggressive and rough. I play an American immigrant in Italy that has become close to the lead character and opens a doorway for him to enter the sport. So, this is your 7th season playing Kate Beckett on Castle. She is now an integral part of you, really. How do you relate to her? In what ways are you similar and in what ways are you different? Other than looking alike (haha) I learn a lot from her. She’s very black and white. I am a little bit more hippy, rock ‘n roll than she is. But in the recent seasons she’s acquired this edge. I’m a bit more girly and goofy than she is. I admire her because she is a woman who is in charge of a Detective force. That’s bloody impressive--and she does it in heels!

Six years playing the same actress on the same series, that must be quite challenging. How has your role changed as an actress through the seasons? As an actress over the years you learn a bit more stamina in terms of lifestyle. The grab bag of tools you have available to you improves--it evolves and you become more efficient. At the same time, as an actress on a show like this you have to be careful to not become complacent in the performance. It’s interesting as I have learned a lot year-to-year and have grown. It’s exciting to both play Beckett but also step away and play other characters during the hiatus, I am fortunate as I have a great balance of both. It’s nice to have the security of having a role that is so well received internationally but its also really wonderful, creatively fulfilling and inspiring to go work elsewhere with other creatives. As far as Beckett and her growth, she has developed colours and layers and

they have opened her up--but they’ve had to, right? She’s a woman in authority and I believe women in this position have to wear all kinds of hats in their lives. We’ve been able to showcase all the sides of her: the vulnerable side, the romantic side, the playful side, the strong side and I think that’s very relatable and believable. When it comes down to it, she’s emotionally driven because the murder of her mother is the reason she became a police officer. I think this gives her a strong quest for justice and makes her a more lethal force to contend with. Does it have its own type of pressure to have a lead role in such a successful series--personally and professionally? The show wants to maintain a standard. The bar has been raised now as after six seasons, this last season was its best rated year which is very unusual and uncommon. I think everyone at the helm of that wants to keep it going at that level. Personally, I’m not driven by the show’s popularity or financial success. Success for me is something creatively inspiring and it can be anything--working with an amazing photographer, it could be music, it could be anything! It just has to be satiating creatively.

idea what sort of story I would like to take on next! Favourite Movie? I have a few! «Dog Day Afternoon,» «There Will Be Blood,» «The Princess Bride,» and «City of God.» I heard you are quite the avid reader. What books are you reading right now? «A Story Lately Told» by Anjelica Huston and «Autobiography of a Yogi» by Paramahansa Yogananda. Could you elaborate a bit on your project called «ATP» for us? Alternative Travel Project is an initiative that I founded that aims to encourage people to get out of the bubble of their cars and to go car-free for one entire day. I founded it because LA is a very car-centric culture and it makes it challenging for people to feel connected to a community, especially as a newcomer, and it separates and ostracises people in a way. So ATP aims to encourage people to walk, cycle or use public transit for one day. People have been committing to it all over the world and it has positive effects on the environment, socially, etc. i
Why do you think Castle has become the success it has? It has a little bit of everything, it is like dessert after dinner, it has drama, romance, comedy and suspense. Each episode is like a finished package, people can come in after missing a week and pick up where they left off; it makes it easy to jump and jump out. The characters are alive, complex, unusual but believable. Can you tell us any spoilers or hints about Season 7? They are currently writing the Season 7 script in LA so we are all riding the exact same wave! When I return in mid-July I will have the answer to this question but as of now, I don’t know a thing. The end of season 6 was so shocking, even for myself, so I have no idea how we are going to come away from that. Post-Castle, what are your future plans and goals? Is there a specific role you would like to play? I am open to seeing what happens next, I hope for something that is engaging, interesting and constantly challenging. As an actress I hope for roles that will challenge audiences, I love vivid storytelling if I can dive into something that will be satisfying in that way, but I have no

ith a partner who shares his passion and philosophy for organic eating, Christoforidis and Chef Christos Athanasiadis have gone on to replicate the success and following they have enjoyed at their two restaurants in Athens and Kifissa with the opening of a sprawling 300-seat restaurant right on the beach at Kalo Livadi in Mykonos. Christoforidis’ tryst with the restaurant business dates back a couple of decades when A-list celebrities would queue up to dine at his LA restaurant, Sanctuary. The legendary Frank Sinatra, after whose 1960 Grammy-winning album, the restaurants are named, was a regular. That possibly explains Christoforidis’ obsession with Hollywood – as all three Nice and Easy restaurants have themed settings where large black and white cut-outs of suave actors from the 50’s with slicked back, Brylcreemed hair vie for wall-space with Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth’s seductive frames. Designer Nikos Kopsidas and artist Nathan Makris recreate the cinematic décor but with a unique Mykonian touch as jazz classics and golden oldies lend to the restaurant’s carefree, ‘nice n easy’ character. A Cycladic menu rich in imagination, flavour and aroma, most of the cheese and vegetables are sourced from Mykonos and neighbouring islands such as Naxos, Kalymnos and Crete and the meat products served at the restaurant are brought in from nice n easy’s own buffalo

farm located in Kerkini Lake, Greece. “Nice n Easy has a menu that goes far beyond your typical Mediterranean fare,” says Christoforidis, “We work hard to create adventurous dishes that tweak your senses but are rooted in local gastronomic traditions and indigineous produce.” Indeed, the menu here is anything but typical in composition and name. Panayiotis Kalivos is a quiet man who’d like the food he serves to do all the talking. His Italian restaurant Capanna spills on to the streets and is the casual meeting point of well-heeled Athenians who come in not only for the informality of the place but for the mouth-wateringly authentic Napolitana fare he serves. A favourite haunt of the Italian embassy staff in Athens, it is testimony to the authenticity of the restaurant’s cuisine.
O
ff the bustling main street of Kolonaki lies Capanna, a small but impressive Italian refuge from hectic Athenian life. Upon entering the trattoria, the first thing you might notice is the charming interior design which is an ode to tradition while still maintaining a modern and minimal aesthetic. The collage of vintage wooden shutters lining the wall gives it a rustic edge, one that is reminiscent of the restaurant’s natural, authentic Italian home-style cooking. Capanna was built around the concept of outdoor alfresco dining, all of it’s windows slide upwards allowing the interior to spill out onto the sprawling and spacious sidewalk which is lined with tables positioned next to fragrant lemon and orange trees. After all, we are blessed with sun and warm weather approximately 350 days a year so why not take advantage of it? Capanna’s outdoor seating paints the ambiance of an Italian courtyard in summertime. The specialities della casa are the one-of-a-kind Caprese salad, refreshing Beef Carpaccio and of course the bonafide, delicious Napoli-style pizzas. Capanna’s menu, fresh ingredients and combination of flavours rivals some of Napoli’s best pizzerias. Light, chewy, airy crust, nicely charred on the edges and underside with the perfect ratio of cheese-to-pomodoro (which is their own house recipe, made fresh daily)--the head pizzaiolo has won multiple Pizza competitions worldwide and uses his own secret recipe for the flour, intricately and carefully preparing it for up to 36 hours. The focaccia breads and pizzas are cooked to order in a brick wood-burning oven, their flavour profiles reflect the pizzaiolo’s careful attention to detail. Insider’s favourites were the Pizza Melanzane, a thin and fluffy dough with mozarella, parmigiano, aubergines and aubergine puree + Pizza Parma with sweet homemade tomato sauce, mozzarella, prosciutto crudo, fresh locally sourced roka and tomatinia. The Caprese salad is not to be missed, the mozzarella di bufala is a generous portion--perfect for sharing with a group of 3-4 and the best one we have ever tasted (in and out of Italia). If you’re looking for a place to entertain friends or to head for a romantic date night, Capanna is the perfect hidden gem and escape into the Italian countryside. onveniently situated off the bustling main street of Patriarchou Joakeim in the upscale neighbourhood of Kolonaki, lies the local hangout and gem of Kalamaki Kolonaki. In a city full of souvlakia and grill houses, they have their own chic, modern and unique spin on a ‘souvlakerie.’ The friendly, efficient and bilingual staff are very informative and always have quite the sense of humour. Insider’s favourites: The ‘Quinoa Salad’ featuring gluten-free quinoa, avocado, chickpeas, fresh onion, cucumbers, tomatoes, coriander and tossed in a refreshing vinaigrette. Their ‘Rib-Eye Souvlaki’ sticks are a fusion of New York City meets Greece, cooked medium and to perfection, succulent and tender. Incredible value for money and their house béarnaise sauce is the perfect condiment to complement it. And then there are their FRIES. Let’s just say we could not get enough of these crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, slightly sweet and absolutely delicious morsels of goodness. They are also real, handcut potatoes and homemade--Yiayia style. It is no surprise that the restaurant was awarded Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence 2014, we are already craving it and thinking of our next visit. Thriving in a time of crisis, the burger joint’s recipe for success. As the restaurateur behind Athenian hot-spot ‘the burger joint,’ George Papakostas certainly knows a thing or two about getting a restaurant off the ground. A New York City-Athens native, George grew up in the restaurant business-his family has owned several successful eateries in Athens and he was trained as a Chef at some of the top restaurants in Manhattan. What was your inspiration and how was the concept conceived? In 2008, my brothers came to visit me in New York and we went for burgers at a friend’s Soho restaurant--they said it was the best burger they ever had. We briefly threw around the idea of opening a burger joint in Greece but nothing came of it. Fast forward to 2010, I came back to Greece for holidays and we ordered burgers from a certain chain--I was shocked at the terrible quality! There was such a large gap in the market and with that-incredible potential. Our family was always involved in upscale dining so we discussed developing an upscale burger. We found a little hole in the wall, tiny space in Glyfada and opened our doors in 2011 thinking, “if this doesn’t do well then we won’t lose a huge amount of money.” What do you attribute to your success? You opened during the crisis, a time when most businesses were closing? We offered something unique and fresh: quality ingredients for an affordable price in a restaurant environment. In the past, to have a proper burger, you had to travel abroad. We are constantly evolving the menu-we are very detail-oriented. We also feature gourmet choices like our Salmon Burger and Truffle Mayo (from pureed truffles) and make our sauces from scratch! Did you always want to be a chef? It was never my plan to be a chef, it just happened by chance really. Growing up, I was always in the kitchen with the chefs at my Father’s restaurants-coming up with new ideas to elevate the dishes

but I never actually cooked. I went to NYU to study and was having a blast; I didn’t want to return to Greece. Going to Culinary School at the French Institute was my convenient excuse to stay longer. But once I began cooking, it became an absolute passion—an obsession. You grew up in a family of Restaurateurs, so it was probably more or less in your DNA, no? I never wanted to do anything else. The fact is that we love hospitality, serving people and giving back. Seeing the smiles and satisfaction on their happy faces-for us, this is the biggest reward. This encourages us to be on top of our game at all times. Tell us about the Burger Joint’s ethos and vision. What sets you apart? For starters, my brothers and I have a ‘crème de la crème’ mentality, we only want our customers to have the best: service, ingredients, menu, and standards. We have an ‘all or nothing’ attitude we give our heart and soul to our business. We also employ a ‘farm to table’ philosophy using organic, hormone-free, antibiotic-free ingredients. Can you elaborate on this ‘farm to table philosophy and process? We source our vegetables and produce from a family-owned farm just outside Athens. We also take the bio-degradable leftovers from the burger joint and compost them, using it for nutrient rich fertiliser. In terms of the burgers and the beef, they are sourced from a farm in Mid-West America and shipped here to Greece-fresh-never frozen. The beef is organic: grass-fed, antibiotic and hormone free. Quality control is everything for the burger joint standard. Can you tell us what you foresee for the future of ‘the burger joint?’ We are in the process of ‘powering’ other restaurants with our bj products, ingredients and menu. We will train them in the kitchen, teach them our recipes and the menu will be exclusively bj products but it will be managed independently by them. We are also preparing to open a casual, self-service, fun, bbq-style eatery. As a family we are always in search of new concepts to challenge us and give back to the community. Giorgos Papastamos of La Casa di Giorgino has been taking his regulars, who have stuck to him loyally over the past twenty years, across different addresses in the city. Lovers of the restaurant’s good, crunchy Napolitana pizza and signature spaghetti alle vongole have kept their faith in Papastamos’ skills for good reason. He delivers authentic Italian fare at extremely affordable prices and the service here is unbeatable with waiters remembering frequent diners by their first name. At his new address on Kyprou 30 (and corner of Maraggou) in Glyfada, the interior is reminiscent of a pizzeria in Italy – complete with copper saucepans on the stone wall and a brick wood-burning oven dominating the space. Sun-kissed fruits If Greek vegetables are succulent, how does one even begin to describe the overflowing fruit basket of cherries, apricots, peaches, figs, watermelons, melons and nectarines? Tender, juicy, cooling fruits, intense in flavor, make their way to the Greek table in a variety of forms: from wedges of watermelon and melons that are served as epidopia at all tavernas on-the-house to cooling granitas and mounds of ruby-red and yellow and maraschino-red cherries, served after a languorous meal. Apricots, peaches and aromatic and succulent nectarines, plums and strawberries, all add colour, texture and gaiety to the Greek summer.
