It is always a matter of light A more fitting site for an explorer of the human form and its relation to space would be hard to find. Sophia Hiniadou-Cambanis speaks to Sir Antony Gormley, as he repopulates the sacred island of Delos with iron ‘bodyforms’, restoring a human presence and creating a journey of potential encounters

Sophia HiniadouCambanis with Antony Gormley at Delos

“Culture is an art of time. My art has no intrinsic value until you see it. It’s just a whisper in order to make you look more carefully at this splendour. It’s a stimulus. Here you can feel the relationship between the mystical and economical and rethink of the possibility to take back the agora.” Sight, a unique art installation with 29 works by the famous British artist Sir Antony Gormley is the fruit of the collaboration between the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades and NEON at Delos. A case of collaboration between the private and public sector that sets an example to be followed. Discovering Delos again through contemporary art and through the eyes of an inspired artist is breathtaking. Gormley's anthropomorphic iron figures and totems are assimilated into the archeological site without imposing their presence. Iron is chosen wisely as the core material of the planet and the basis for the industrial revolution. A beautiful interaction between the artist, the visitor and the environment. A spiritual art work shown on the sacred isle of Delos, this uninhabited granite rock of great geological and archeological significance. This extraordinary cosmopolitan Hellenistic town in the middle of the Cyclades is

observe him carefully. Constellations of words and phrases take shape underneath the perfect straw hat, pulled tight over his head. He is one of the most renowned sculptors in the world. An ingenious creator. A thinker. He stands in awe of the greatness of Aegean nature and history, and talks humbly of his sculptures. He feels grateful and privileged to be here. He talks about art. He talks about time. He talks about life.

a place where no artist has set foot for a thousand years. While climbing up to the highest point of Mt. Kynthos, we are gazing at the dancing light over the nearby islands. Strolling back down, I take in the outstanding beauty of spring flowerbeds among the holy ruins. At dusk, looking at the magnificent temples and the altars, the theatre and the stadium, the merging classical and contemporary art, I reconsider my world. Contemplation, serenity, hopefulness, light.

Antony Gormley is right. Art is a whisper of history, heard above the noise of time. A tool to mark space and time, to connect with our collective memory and to rethink the future.

he Palace at 4 a.m. takes its title from an iconic work by Alberto Giacometti. The Palace at 4 a.m. is a small wooden sculpture he created in 1932; like a theatre it features a dramatic encounter between a woman, a bird and a spinal column. Presiding over these protagonists is a mysterious deity. The scene is a palace before sunrise, a time of dreams, ghosts and secret assignations. The exhibition draws on the strange drama of Giacometti's masterpiece to evoke the spirits, rituals and myths that haunt ancient archaeological sites such as Delos. The island’s statues, architectural fragments, vessels and tombstones collected in the museum are attributes of a cosmopolitan citizenry that disappeared two millennia ago. Just as Delos once brought together people from across the ancient world, The Palace at 4 a.m. features a global roster of 13 artists.

Their work is juxtaposed with the museum’s collection and additional treasures selected by the archaeologists of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades. Like a theatre curtain a monumental decorative drape newly commissioned from by Duro Olowu, which combines the richly decorated textiles from northern and southern hemispheres, provides the overture to the exhibition. An installation of artefacts - both platonic and erotic - has been composed by Haris Epaminonda. Simone Fattal presents her haiku-like ceramics evoking classical ruins and monsters; while Rena Papaspyrou magically transforms contemporary detritus into archaeological fragments. Ian Law enters the hallowed confines of the museum vitrine with votive figures that incorporate the ashes of the dead. In the central gallery, Paloma Varga Weisz pitches a beautifully carved contemplative

female figure from the heavens; she is suspended in drapery that recalls the Baroque. Below her are two powerfully gestural ceramics, evoking landscape and habitat by renowned painter Lynda Benglis. Giacometti’s work is evoked by Daria Martin’s film In the Palace where she reconstructed his tiny sculpture as a full-scale stage set for a group of performers who take up the poses and gestures of avant garde Modernism. A spiral map of fragments by Stefania Strouza is arranged according to the wandering of Zeus’ lover Leto across the islands of the Aegean, in a shrine to female goddesses. In another wing of the museum the towering porcelain vessels of Barthélémy Toguo use delicate glazes to depict the deathly iconography of the virus in African society. Opposite hang self-portraits screened on Ghanaian textiles by Zohra Opoku her image metamorphosing from her botanical environment. Where the museum offers a retirement home for the vessels of antiquity, Petrit Halilaj brings resembled fragments of Neolithic pottery back to life by turning them into birds for whom he has constructed two nests. Elsewhere he has installed the museum conservationist’s deadliest enemy – a giant moth is suspended from the museum’s ceiling, a metaphor for all those who can only reveal themselves under cover of night. In the museum garden Maria Loizidou has suspended a huge pelt handwoven from a stainless-steel mesh, remnant of an entity that has either been hunted and skinned; or sloughed off its own skin to live again. M

y first visit to Mykonos was in the summer of 1955. From the vantage point of those days on that magical quiet island with one 12-passenger bus and a plethora of donkeys it was absolutely inconceivable what would happen over the ensuing 60 years. On the day I arrived there were some 15 visitors on the island. These days on a typical summer day the island expects between 120,000 and 140,000 visitors. So in 1955 here was a small exceptionally beautiful island with little electricity, no cars, motorbikes, running water, tractors, TV or internet, no airport, no dock, and essentially no tourists. But artists and writers had already identified Mykonos as a special place some decades before my first visit, for many reasons. One was the beauty of the architecture of Chora and its extraordinary setting directly on the sea. Most Choras -island main villages- are built in the hills hidden from view from the sea to avoid so pirates wouldn’t get interested. But the Mykonians -either audaciously unafraid of pirates or because they were among the pirates- built directly on the sea, some houses so close that a captain could disembark directly into his living room. There were other unique attractions too: the warmth and hospitality of its people, the beaches with unusually fine Aegean sand, the proximity to Delos and its important archaeological site, the unspoiled landscape with its spectacular rock formations, and generations of hard-won terracing created to expand and maintain agriculture. Mykonos was like an independent island principality with its own culture, its own dances, songs, poetry, cuisine, textiles, architecture, and even language. All of this had evolved and been carefully honed over a period of thousands of years, through wars, occupations, drought, and other calamities. You cannot underestimate the isolation of these Aegean islands in the age of sail and how unique and distinctive cultures evolved there.

When I look at my photographs today I feel like an archaeologist might feel when she or he uncovered some carefully wrought object from the past that illuminates the history and mores and life and ethos of a long ago era. The photos feel to me like precious relics. Our goal for this book is to offer a record of just a few years in the history of Mykonos-but extraordinarily important years because they were the years when the island still maintained its ancient culture and traditions and economy. They were the years just before tourism changed the face of the island forever.

AEGEAN MEMORIES | PHOTOGRAPHY

It is not an exaggeration to say that life in Mykonos has changed more in these past 60 years than it did in the prior 3000 years. It was an undisturbed example of a very carefully polished, self-sufficient Aegean civilization. How incredibly lucky I was to see it in those days when it was still just on the threshold of such dramatic change. A few hours after I arrived I wrote a letter to my parents in New York and dispatched it at the post office. I told them I had found the most beautiful place on earth and even if they came directly from the United States and saw nothing else, it would be worthwhile to come and see just Mykonos. I know this must sound made up today but it is true. If you don’t believe me I will try to find the letter. This year Mykonos is expecting two million visitors. One senses there’s been a huge explosion—an explosion of houses, cars, tour buses, motorbikes, villas, roads, and people from all over the universe. That incredible magnificent little village by the sea has become a huge shopping center with virtually every retailer you can name present. But where is the bakery, where are the blacksmiths, where are the caiques and the donkeys? Outside of Chora the landscape is dense with villas. This is progress of its own sort, and the economist in us applauds the enormous economic success of the island, the envy of its Aegean neighbors. History is repeating itself. Delos had been a great and renowned international commercial center in antiquity. Mykonos has today taken up the mantle of its tiny ancient neighbor. The island has reinvented itself as a happy, fashionable place for people to shop, vacation, party, dine, relax by the sea (in €100 lounge beds with an umbrella). They shop surrounded by some of the most beautiful architecture in the world. Yet we know in our hearts that something has been lost. In the period after the war people started to move out of the Aegean islands, seeking work on the mainland or abroad. Houses were sometimes abandoned when families emigrated. Development and tourism have saved some island villages, and they have given employment to the local population and kept them in place. That has been good. Mykonos has been saved beyond imagination...and also beyond recognition. In 1955 Chora had evolved for the pleasure, economic viability, convenience and edification of its inhabitants, not to lure tourists. The streets were narrow and complex for protection. The churches were the objects of faith, of hope, of salvation at sea. It was an authentic and admirable civilization, perfect in its way to serve its residents. In the 1950s you took only real ships to Mykonos, often very old ships. The sea-going high-speed buses of today did not exist. You could smell the sea and feel it. You transitioned to shore by leaping into a bobbing tender and gripping a gunwale for dear life as the meltemi’s wild sea spray hit your face. Insider Mykonos | 24

Reproduced as full-page tritones of surpassing quality, and accompanied by a sensitive introduction and detailed captions, McCabe's photographs do indeed offer a portrait of a vanished era. change. I am especially disappointed that I did not photograph more of the architecture and landscape of the island before retail signage and villa construction changed their character. It is sad that this year’s two million visitors cannot have the experience of Mykonos in 1955, the experience of an ancient authentic Aegean civilization. Fortunately we have Chora with its architecture fundamentally intact. This is a treasure of incalculable value. If these photos can help a visitor or a grandchild of the island relive or imagine some small aspect of the island’s earlier life I will be happy. Insider Mykonos | 27

There are hundreds of Greek islands. Why did Mykonos become, in just a few decades, one of the leading vacation destinations in the world, hosting up to 140,000 visitors on a typical summer day? obert McCabe was born in Chicago in 1934 and grew up in Rye, New York. His father worked for a picture newspaper in New York, and as a result of his father’s gift of a Kodak Baby Brownie in 1939, Bob started taking photographs when he was five. His earliest quest was for newsworthy photographs and he gathered images of hurricanes, drownings, and auto and train accidents. His interests shifted to people, still lifes, and landscapes during three years in western Massachusetts, where little of dramatic interest occurred. His first photographs of Europe were the result of a trip in 1954 to France, Italy, and Greece. He returned to Greece in 1955, and in 1957 he photographed in the Cyclades for National Geographic Magazine. His black and white photos were first exhibited in 1954 and 1955 at Firestone Library at Princeton University, and in a traveling exhibition which ensued. During this period he also appeared on television with Ambassador George Melas giving a photographic tour of Greece. In 1967 a selection of photographs was exhibited at the Olympic Gallery (now Olympic Tower) in New York City under the auspices of Spryos Skouras. The publication of his first book, Metamorphosis, was in 1979. He has since exhibited his work in London, Paris, Brussels, in many locations in Greece including several in Athens, and also in Patmos, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Monodendri, Corfu and Poros. He has also exhibited in the United States, in New York City, Boston, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His published books cover subjects and locations in Greece, France, Italy, New York City, New England, Havana, China, and Antarctica. Currently he is working on several projects including books: “Portraits of the Greeks 1954-2017”; “The Greeks and Their Seas”; Kassos 1965 with Marilen Kedros, and “Santorini: Portrait of a Vanished Era” with Margarita Pournara.

ISLAND LIFE

Mykonos: Beyond the hype Mykonos might have justly earned its rep as Greece’s party animal, with sun-kissed bodies swamping its beaches by day and cavorting through its clubs by dawn. But there’s more depth and substance to it than its blingfest of celebrities and voracious party-hoppers, admit those in-the-know. Mykonos reveals itself to those who are willing to spend a little time to discover a Cycladic island, rich in tradition and authenticity. In this rep vs reality article, a few myths get busted, wrongs get righted, for a different Mykonos experience

ISLAND LIFE

1

THE REP: Shallow and Culture-free If Mykonos were a television show, it would likely get cast as an intellectually-challenged but addictive reality series like the Kardashians: all show, no soul. That is a charge regulars find offensive. And a stream of high-profile exhibitions have sought to change the island’s reputation from shallow to arty. THE REALITY: buzzing with galleries, museums From Sir Gormley’s installations at Delos (see full article) to galleries such as Dio Horia showcasing Greek and international talent, Mykonos has more depth and substance than its given credit for. This summer take in solo shows at Dio Horia by Spyros Aggelopoulos, Sam Friedman and Joakim Ojanen. Stroll through the warren of narrow pedestrian streets past its small chapels to visit the Archaeological Museum where NEON’s ‘The Palace at 4 am’ is on until late October. Or take in a movie at the open-air Cine Manto.

THE REP: Heteros not allowed Mykonos has justly earned its reputation as Greece’s gayest and most glamorous, fun-filled nightlife holiday destination with gay and gay-friendly bars, beaches, hotels and businesses catering to top-dollar paying gay tourists. So expect drag shows, gay cruising spots and the overthe-top XLSior festival that play up the island’s rep to the hilt. But that doesn’t translate as ‘stay away if you stay straight’, travel agents insist.

Insider Mykonos | 32

THE REALITY: gay friendly but also family friendly Mykonos’ open, cosmopolitan character is its biggest draw. And as much its infectious zest for life is a natural draw for gay tourists who can openly holiday on the island without being judged by locals, Mykonos is awash with family-friendly venues too.

2

THE REP: Raucous party zone Almost anyone who has set foot here will tell you, if its rest you’re looking for, Mykonos doesn’t know its definition. In this no-sleep zone, ‘party till you drop’ is the name of the game and clubs attract international DJs nightly to keep revellers going until dawn. While Mykonos is Greece’s answer to Ibiza, regulars insist there is a quieter, tamer Mykonos too where champagne cocktails and live piano music are a pleasant antidote to the cheap shots and incessant thumping at the beach clubs. THE REALITY: an alternate quieter, unspoiled Mykonos exists Party animals aren’t the only creatures that claim Mykonos as their own – stray past Chora and you’ll chance upon horses roaming free in flowercarpeted valleys, find sheep stray into tavernas, a bucolic scene far removed from the glitz and glam image of Mykonos.

from shallow to arty.

4

THE REALITY: Windsurfing, sailing, fishing too Not only does Mykonos boast some of the finest stretches of sand in the Cyclades – almost 25 beaches to be precise – they are particularly good for water sports. Agios Ioannis is a good spot for windsurfing. Try your hand at adrenalin-packed activities such as flyboarding, wakeboarding and wakeskating with Platys Gialos Watersports on the eponymous beach. Diving Mykonos has plenty of walls, caves and wrecks to entice beginners and advanced divers alike. Diving operators are based on Paradise, Lia and Kalafatis beaches; the most reputable include Mykonos Diving Center and GoDive Mykonos. Yummy Pedals tailors guided mountain-biking tours of the island to suit your skill level.

Insider Mykonos | 33

AEGON Mykonos | Autograph Collection® Hotels

THE REP: Partying is the only sport With so much adrenaline on display on the dance floors and beach clubs, there is little energy to spare for any other activity other than ‘eat, drink, repeat.’

ISLAND LIFE

THE REP: Over-priced tourist traps abound Stories of tourists being overcharged and local businesses conning new arrivals may make the headlines, but they are the exception that mar the island’s reputation than the norm. Sure, Mykonos isn’t cheap, especially if you want the luxury service and quality that goes with it, but affordable options abound. Peruvian and Japanese restaurants might be aplenty on the island, but make time to discover local delicacies too.

© Christos Drazos

THE REALITY: authentic food and drink experiences too! Kopanisti might not have the universal appeal of parmesan but it is an acquired taste. Its piquant, strong, creamy texture is a staple accompaniment for Mykonian mezes and ouzo sessions. The abundance of livestock on the island translates as a lively cheese-making local industry, so discover a bit of the real Mykonos through its local cheeses such as tyrovolia and xinotiro. The barley rusks and bread here are absolutely delicious too.

our creations exude a sense of melodrama combined with glamorous insouciance – a study of oversized flowers, vintage beads and shells. Is that an obvious reference to your years in theatre? Theatre, and generally every form of art, has fascinated me since childhood. And my aesthetics have been profoundly influenced by it. What I do know is that I very much like to confuse different time periods and styles, like fabrics, materials and colours, creating something that I believe is very personal and recognizable.

You’ve had a very distinctive style, weaving a romantic tapestry of your travels and sewing them on to your clothes. Do your clothes tell a story? Do you share it with the wearer or do you let them create their own? The clothes I design unconsciously carry stories of civilizations. It's something that I do not do consciously. I am thrilled to create what I learn from performances, my travels and personal experiences. The fact that my customers are ‘transported’ by my clothes gives me great joy. It is a journey they can interpret as they please.

You’ve just launched your boutique in Mykonos and your clothes are sold in 60 countries! For someone with no formal training in fashion design, do you feel a strong sense of validation, achieving the kind of success few Greek designers have, just 13 years since you launched your brand? My first fashion collection in 2006, was extremely well-received, at several leading fashion venues abroad. It has been a continuing trend since then and I have established the brand worldwide. We have worked with the best fashion retail boutiques abroad. This obviously validates my job and makes me feel good. The new store in Mykonos is a stand-alone Dassios boutique where one can find the complete range of our creations. We wanted a cosmopolitan setting with a Greek identity. That’s why Mykonos was the right choice! What sunshine fashion essentials do you recommend? Straw hat, sandals and a kaftan from our summer collection and you’re beach-ready. Share a recent travel discovery. I just recently travelled to Madrid - I was transported to a world of baroque which has intensely influenced my next winter collection. The combination of baroque and arabesque elements (that is so unique to Spain), combined with folk tradition is also my signature style.

Nammos. And usually does. From Kate Moss on the decks to Lionel Ritchie dancing on a table to one of his own tunes. Roll back two decades and Mykonos’ most headline-grabbing club was a humble bucket and spade beach, tucked at the end of a reed-lined dusty track on Psarou. Now its name is as familiar on the haute hedonist circuit as Le Club 55 in St Tropez. Nammos blew out its first 15 candles last summer with a starstudded bash and a makeover that included a new luxury shopping village (no excuse now not to dress the part). Arrive before noon to see handsome waiters ferrying revved-up club sandwiches to super-styling sun worshippers under stripy parasols. By early afternoon, Nammos morphs into an elegant lunch destination where international fashion designers and sport stars hold court over iced magnums of Dom Perignon Rosé. By 6pm, a flotilla of luxury boats is berthed out front and the party is at full tilt. (If the kids are still about, it’s time to pack them off with Nanny). Most celebrities who pass through Mykonos will drop in at Nammos at some point to see what all the fuss is about. It’s a heady Bacchanalian mess that shouldn’t work but somehow does. In the right dosage. Psarou Beach, +30 2289 022440, nammos.gr

Alemagou

Best for: fashion-forward beach bums and chillseekers What’s the story? Ditch the diamonds and gold watches. You won’t be needing them at this bohemian hotspot with an addictive off-the-beatentrack appeal. Alemagou rocks a refreshing “take us as we come” attitude, paired with a languid New Mexico aesthetic. Nestled on a dreamy curve of sand at Ftelia, fronted by protected turquoise seas, it’s where millennial beatniks and mellowed-out beach babes (think 70s Farah Fawcett) pitch up in black jeeps to neck rosé and flirt beneath a sea-grass canopy, to hypnotic tribal sounds. The Alemagou vibe might be set firmly to “chill” but there’s nothing half-hearted about the excellent food dished up here (try the clams from Halkida or the sea urchin spaghetti). Best for: aesthetes and those wanting to awaken their “chi” What’s the story? Spending a day at Scorpios is like hanging out at your best friend’s beach house (if your best friend happens to be someone like Giorgio Armani). Resting on five pillars - music, food, design, healing and art - this ultra-classy, cactus-clad compound sits on a craggy 7,000 sq metre peninsula overlooking Paraga beach in southern Mykonos. It’s a highly-snappable scatter of wooden beach cabanas and sofas, spilling down multiple tiers, framed by African palms, sea grass and a windfall of cactus figs, nudged onto the warm sand by errant Mykonian breezes. Scorpios joined the Soho House global tribe this summer as their first stand-alone beach club (or “beach experience” to use the proper lingo). Choose from a spectrum of “emotionally themed” spaces with different energy profiles: tune out on the Nomad’s Terrace, or hit the Slope to be right in the whirl. Shallow iridescent waters and a flat sandy shore make Solymar a popular choice for families; while its outstanding modern Med fare draws fashionable foodies from all over the place. SEA & BE SCENE

Best for: families, friends and beach purists What’s the story? Enough dash to make a splash; the recently rebooted Principote is also low-key enough to satisfy those who want to take a breather from the Mykonos party hearty scene. Tucked inside the north coast’s horseshoe bend, Principote is a near perfect beach hangout where you can pick your preferred speed. Indulge in chic “barefoot on the sand” restaurant dining. Sprawl more convivially with your mates on slouchy sofas over elevated beach bites. Or by the sea under one of the pearly crocheted umbrellas that seem to have sprouted all over the Island of the Winds. Panormos beach has a splendid natural beauty that trumps many of its rivals. Gaze out over the lagoonlike bay to Ftelia or drift along the shoreline to the stunning strip of free unspoiled beach adjoining Principote. You can plant your pareo on the sand and pretend you’re a castaway. Even in August.

Best for: extroverts and flirts What’s the story? Truffle and mozzarella sarnies at the beach? Ecological body oil for managing the perfect tan? No problem at this perennially popular Super Paradise social retreat that packs the essence of an eternal Mykonos summer to a mostly-gay clientele (and is sister to the legendary Jackie O’ club in town). Fun and universally welcoming, with an infectious vibe that’s Vegas Lounge meets Club Tropicana. Party central is a 25m round bar with lounging cushions overlooking a sculpted infinity pool. Golden sand, clear water and non-stop music and dancing make this the best hangout on the island hosting all-nighters that attract hardcore partiers and drag queens. Shy types need not apply.

Theodoris, his partner, walks into the showroom, soft-spoken and down-tempo to Mario’s high-octane, frenzied energy. The showroom is itself a cavernous collection of interesting pieces. Life-size baby elephants in driftwood grace the entrance. Arabesque teardrop light fittings in battered metal dangle off the ceiling, a cobalt blue gorilla shares his habitat with oversized banana leaves, there are tables, couches, painted donkeys and all manner of opulent fittings for a hotel or holiday home. An EcoWarrior Princess In a world desperately in need of role models, Katerina Topouzoglou is an inspiration who makes you want to be a better version of yourself. It’s not just her motivating role as founder of not for profit organization “All for Blue” that undertakes beach clean-ups and marine awareness campaigns, it’s also her hands-on attitude to life. Vicky Pouliou speaks to the intrepid eco-warrior.

2. How did you come up with the idea of All for Blue? As someone who thrives in underwater fishing, I came across a lot of trash every time I dived. Soon my fishing trips turned to cleaning trips. It made me wonder what I could do to make a difference and help people change their everyday habits. All for Blue was born. Besides our clean-ups, we run an educational program with audio-visual material and we provide an attendance certificate to all students so that they know in advance why they should protect sea life. 3. What is the level of awareness of sharks in Greece? Zero! 4. What makes you think so? People still have the memory of a well – filmed science fiction movie that has been terrifying people for over 40 years. Unfortunately people still eat sharks without knowing Insider Mykonos | 53

1. Since when have you been involved with the sea? I’ve always felt that the sea was my home, my haven, the place I could go to when I was angry and get washed over with peace and serenity. When I was a kid I remember going to the beach with my parents and picking up trash, which I thought was normal.

The sea needs allies! Be the change you want to see with actions and not words.

Some of the strangest things I've come across in the ocean include super market trolleys, toilet bowls, washing machines, motorbikes… the list is endless and sadly, now nothing really surprises me!

If we had better funding, we could do a lot more! At the moment we mainly rely on donations from individuals, from the products we sell on our e-shop (reusable metallic straws) and of course we have the massive support of Northern Aegean region and Mr.Chatzimarkos for the Keep Aegean Blue mission. We always have dry enthusiastic, committed volunteers for our activities and this is something that touches me as these actions are inspired by our mutual love for the blue. that they contain high levels of mercury and more importantly without knowing how precious they are for our lives. 5. What are your current actions and how can someone participate? We have just finished the second part of our mission “Keep Aegean Blue”, where, in collaboration with the Southern Aegean region, five people of our team visited the Cycladic and Dodecanese islands with a dinghy from October to April. Our main mission was to inform students and help them experience clean-ups. Our upcoming activities focus on Mykonos, Tinos, Mati and Schoinias beach in Attica and other islands. 6. What are the reactions of kids during these visits? Thankfully, our seminars are visually engaging and children and adults sign up with great enthusiasm. They are particularly motivated knowing that they are the last generation that could potentially make a difference as according to a recent study, by 2048, there would be more trash than fish in our seas. 7. What are the strangest things you have come across during your clean-ups? A super market trolley in Vouliagmeni, a toilet bowl in the Bahamas and Egypt, a washing machine in Kalymnos, motorbikes in Syros, Rhodes, Mykonos… the list is endless and sadly, now nothing really surprises me! 8. What are your future plans for All for Blue? How easily do you attract volunteers? Do you have any government aid? Insider Mykonos | 54

9. What would you advise everyone going to the beach? Don’t be ashamed, gather all the trash you may find, the sea needs us! And please, don’t plant your cigarettes in the sand, they will not grow! 10. There’s a growing awareness about plastic in the sea lately and on how small day changes can make a difference. Can you give us a few tips? I try every day to change my routine and eliminate my plastic footprint on the planet. I get mocked when I bring my own cup for coffee or insist on not being given a plastic straw. 11. Is there someone you truly admire? I admire everyone who shares our passion and joins us in our activities despite their professional obligations. I admire the simple things in life. I admire the commitment and gutsy spirit of all our All for blue volunteers who joined me this winter on a tour of the Greek islands on a dinghy. 12. What inspires you and what gives you hope for the future? I observe how kids embrace our activities and that fills me with energy and hope to continue. 13. What is your life motto? You haven’t ‘done’ Mykonos if you haven’t... In this day and age, there is no denying that Mykonos is one of the most popular destinations in Greece, with many seasonal flights connecting directly several European cities to the Cycladic island. Whether you have been there already or plan to visit during this summer, one thing is sure: you haven’t really experienced Mykonos if you haven’t done one of the things listed below. Do you tick all the boxes?

DINED AT: A SEASIDE RESTAURANT Mykonos is filled with countless culinary jewels, offering a wide choice of dining experience, from fine dining to street food with a twist or simply international cuisine tucked in small alleys across town. But there is something about dining at a table right on the water. Whether you stumble upon a traditional restaurant on the beach or a tavern near the port, dining by the water is certainly a must.

Lohan, Kendall Jenner or Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s right. Every year, Mykonos welcomes a multitude of tourists, but it is not rare to spot international movie stars, Victoria Secret angels or simply some of the A-list jetsetters partying at an exclusive beach bar or sipping champagne on a yacht.

ISLAND LIFE | MYKONOS

SPENT A DAY AT: THE BEACH This one is a no-brainer. You cannot visit Mykonos without enjoying a day at one of its many beaches. Opt for trendy shores such as Ornos, Paraga or Paradise and Super Paradise beaches if you don’t mind beach club vibes and crowds or choose the more isolated coves in the west and eastern coasts. Just remember that in Mykonos, life is a beach.

Insider’s tip:

This picturesque waterfront area in Mykonos Town is not considered the most romantic place on the island for nothing. Picture this: gorgeous old houses lined narrow paths ending right on azure waters. This not for nothing that this area is one of the most photographed on the island.

The island has perhaps the most abundant and beautiful beaches in Greece, so take your pick and don’t be shy of flaunting it with the bronzed and the buffed.
