Racine Third Graders Receive Donated Dictionaries to Help Further Education Racine, WI, Monday, March 26, 2012 - The AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers, State Senator Bob Wirch (D-Pleasant Prairie) and State Representative Cory Mason (DRacine) today presented donated dictionaries to more than 100 third graders at S.C. Johnson Elementary School in Racine as part of a statewide effort to help improve childhood literacy and student reading scores. "This is an exciting program because it not only introduces third graders to the dictionary, but it also helps boost student literacy and reading scores," said Kim DeLaO, Principal of S.C. Johnson Elementary School. "Thanks to the AT&T Pioneers, our third graders now own their very own personal dictionary. With this wonderful tool, they will learn vocabulary development, word pronunciation, the different meanings of words, and how to compare and contrast words." The event included a presentation where Sen. Wirch, Rep. Mason and the Pioneers explained to the students what information they can find in the dictionaries and how to use them. In addition to being a comprehensive dictionary, the books distributed include the biographies of the U.S. Presidents, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, information about the 50 states, facts about the planets in the solar system, maps of the seven continents, and facts about the world's countries. "Nothing is more important for a strong Wisconsin future than ensuring a quality education for all of our children," said Sen. Wirch. "These dictionaries will be another great resource for these students both in third grade and throughout their education." "A quality education is the single most important investment we can make for the future success of our young people, our state, and our nation," said Rep. Mason. "These dictionaries are steps in the right direction in helping our students continue to grow, learn, and succeed both in and out of the classroom." The Pioneers are donating nearly 9,000 dictionaries this school year to students at more than 130 schools statewide, including S.C. Johnson Elementary, as part of its 6th annual "Dictionaries for Success" program. The Pioneers are a local volunteer organization of AT&T employees and retirees dedicated to volunteering their time to various community causes. The "Dictionaries for Success" program is part of AT&T Cares, a volunteer initiative created to encourage employees to get involved in community service that is meaningful to them and their communities, to create change, and to stay engaged. The AT&T Pioneers have been distributing donated dictionaries to more than 130 schools statewide this academic year, including schools in Racine, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Appleton, Madison, Waukesha, Beloit, Janesville, and Eau Claire. "AT&T is committed to helping advance the education of our young people," said Tricia Conway, Director of External Affairs for AT&T Wisconsin and a local Pioneer. "We are proud to join forces with Sen. Wirch, Rep. Mason, S.C. Johnson Elementary staff, and educators throughout the state to give students the tools they need to develop into the future leaders of tomorrow."

Healing for the Heart by Joyce Meyer Everyone experiences fear in their life. There are big fears we are very aware of and little ones we may not even realize we have. I've learned that it's very important to understand what fear is and how it works against us because if we don't, it can keep us from becoming what God created us to be, which means we won't fulfill our purpose in life.

Fear's Evil Scheme “ God wants us to walk by faith, and Satan wants us to walk by fear. ” Fear is a tool the devil uses against us to make us miserable and destroy our lives. It begins as a thought and then creates emotions that can rule us. It often becomes a strong, intense feeling that tries to move us to make a foolish action or tries to prevent us from doing something that would be good for us. Because it's such a common way that Satan attacks people's lives, I think of it as the master spirit he uses to manipulate people and keep them out of God's will. Simply put, fear is the opposite of faith. God wants us to walk by faith, and Satan wants us to walk by fear.

When we learn to live by faith and not let fear rule our life, we can live a fulfilling, satisfying, peaceful and joyful life in Christ. Like I said before, fear begins with a thought. Proverbs 23:7 tells us that "as [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he" (NKJV). I like to say it like this: Where the mind goes, the man follows.

Finding Freedom This is why the Bible talks about meditating on the Word of God and having our minds renewed (see Romans 12:2) so we can know what God's will is. Meditating means you roll the Scripture over and over in your mind until it becomes part of you. Meditation takes information and turns it into revelation. When you get revelation about something, then you know that you know that you know it, and the truth of it sets you free from the lie that was holding you back from something God had for you. Is Fear Holding You Back? I wonder how many people actually have gifts and talents from God but they aren't using them because they tried and failed? So many people are frustrated because they know

Page 11 The Insider News Wisconsin, April 1-15, 2012

they're not doing what they are meant to do and are letting fear rule them. I want you to get a revelation about this because you're not going to ever be really happy if you don't fulfill your potential and be who God created you to be. The key is to learn who you are in Christ and see yourself in Him. When we become born again through a relationship with Jesus Christ, we actually become "recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do good works which God predestined…for us…[living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live]" (Ephesians 2:10 AMP). So whatever Jesus is, we are too. He is strong, and in Him, we are strong. He is courageous; in Him, we are courageous. He is a conqueror, so we can be too. He has peace and joy, so we have peace and joy. He's capable and bold. In Christ, we can do whatever we need to do with His boldness. As you read the Bible and meditate on what God says about you, you will be able to recognize the fears in your life that are holding you back and overcome them by seeing yourself in Christ. Then you will find you have whatever you need to do what you are created to do.

By Elizabeth Wellington Hoodies have endured a bad rap for some time now. Yet last week, given the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin a month ago, the hooded sweatshirt became the most politicized garment of its era as Americans - especially black men - held rallies to end racial profiling and to take the hoodie back. "I wear a hoodie almost every day," Drexel University student James Moore, 27, said at the Million Hoodie March in Philadelphia on Friday, which drew an estimated 5,000 protesters - black and white, most of them wearing hoodies. "Trayvon wasn't killed because he was wearing a hoodie; he was killed because he was black. The hoodie is just a symbol," Moore said. Martin was wearing a hoodie pulled up over his head when he was shot and killed by Neighborhood Watch participant George Zimmerman on Feb. 26 as the teen walked back to his father's house in a gated community in Sanford, Fla., from a convenience store. The unarmed Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles candy and a container of iced tea. Police, who had possession of Martin's cellphone after he was killed, did not notify his family. No charges have been filed against Zimmerman. Many say Zimmerman, 28, who has a white father and Hispanic mother, would not have targeted Martin if the teen had been white and wearing a hoodie. Yet talk show host Geraldo Rivera argued that Martin was partly responsible for his death because he was wearing a hoodie. Rivera's comments have drawn rebuke, even from his own son. The appearance of racial profiling in the case has evoked renewed fear among the parents, relatives, and friends of black and biracial boys. "A white boy wears a hoodie and he's a college student; a black man wears a hoodie and he's a professional thug," said Chuck Williams, director of Drexel University's Center for the Prevention of School-Aged Violence. "This apparel makes me a criminal, and I am in their eyes. What I wear gives them an excuse to do what they want to me." Hence the spreading call to hoodie action, which started over Facebook and Twitter and gained momentum in the last week as celebrities from singer Common to the entire Miami Heat basketball team released photos of themselves wearing hoodies. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams even donned a black hoodie and posted on Facebook a photo of himself wearing it. Philadelphia's march Friday followed similar events in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. And the protests show no sign of slowing. Hoodie candlelight vigils are scheduled for LOVE Park on Monday and Thursday. On Sunday, protesters in hoodies plan to gather at Temple University. Parents of black children who once warned them to keep their hoodies down so they would not be wrongfully profiled are now saying enough is enough. "I urge all parents to tell their children to wear hoodies as much as they can. What are they going to do, shoot all of them?" asked Reggie Jones, 40, father of a 23-yearold son, who attended the march Friday with his wife and daughter. Even African American churches, where conservatively dressed members typically speak out against the fashions inspired by hip-hop culture, are getting involved in the hoodie protest. On Sunday, more than 30 men at Mount Zion United Methodist Church wore hoodies at their annual Men's Day service in memory of Trayvon Martin. "We need to stop allowing people to tell us what we can and can't wear," said the Rev. Micah Sims, who helped organize the protest. "It's not about what we wear; it's about who we are." African American men are arguably the nation's biggest tastemakers. Often, they take a piece of classic American clothing and put a twist on it. And the way they wear it becomes a trend that mainstream America copies. Hoodies popped into mainstream culture when Sylvester Stallone made them popular in Rocky. But hoodies did not become really cool until hip-hop artists such as Run DMC and the Wu-Tang Clan proudly rocked and rapped about them. Eventually, hood-

ies came to be featured in every hip-hop clothing line, from Phat Farm to Rocawear. But what often happens is that while mainstream America gets points for cool, even appropriating the looks for the runway, black men get labeled sinister for wearing the trend they created. Masculine white guys are trendy; masculine black men are feared. That became more true with hip-hop culture as everything from Timberland boots to white T-shirts to sports jerseys reached the heights of fashion in the black community but also become ways to profile black men. "We live in a society where people are more likely to assume a young black man is a criminal," said James Peterson, professor of history at Lehigh University. "It's in our music. In our TV. It's how it's reported on film, video games, and it has fueled certain sartorial prejudices that rear their head in the form of racial profiling." So black parents find themselves having to tell their children they can't do what everyone else is doing because they will be perceived negatively. But unlike sagging jeans and tattoos, which often are considered slovenly and threatening, nothing could be more all-American than a hoodie. Not just the uniform of hip-hop, they are preferred apparel at sporting events and as comfort wear. President George W. Bush was often photographed jogging in his. By the early part of the millennium, they were at their peak, spurred by Pharrell Williams' wearing bright Bathing Ape hoodies and the rise of Juicy Couture. Fashions change, and slowly but surely hip-hop artists began wearing their hoodies up. As did skateboarders and even Olympic athletes.

GRC4HBO HOSTS COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER

“April Showers Bring Healthy Babies” Will Help Many In Need Racine, WI (April 1, 2012) – the Greater Racine Collaborative for Healthy Birth Outcomes (GRC4HBO) is hosting a community baby shower during the month of April 2012. Greater Racine residents are encouraged to donate new baby supplies, like diapers, blankets, formula, and new clothes for expectant parents in need. “Infant mortality is one of the most critical problems facing Greater Racine and one of the major causes are babies being born too soon and too small,” said Samantha Perry, GRC4HBO Project Manager. We’re having this shower to help those parents who cannot afford to purchase formula, diapers and other essentials every baby needs and reduce their stress.” GRC4HBO has broadened its focus on mothers to increase involvement of fathers, other family members and our community. Stress, is but one of the many factors that create an unhealthy environment for babies and their mothers. Not being able to afford what every baby needs can be very stressful. The “April Showers Bring Healthy Babies” Baby Shower is a way members of the community can help make a difference. “If a mother doesn't have a way to get the necessary items for her newborn baby, it creates stress. There's quite a bit of research that talks a great deal about first trimester stress leading to preterm labor/birth,” said Tessa Brown, a Community Leader. “I believe Racine is a compassionate and concerned community who will support our efforts by making a donation to the shower.” Donations can be made at the following drop-off sites: Racine Family YMCA, 725 Lake Avenue US Bank, 4701 Washington Avenue Wheaton Franciscan, St. Luke’s Health Pavilion, 3821 Spring Street 53405 Greater Mount Eagle Missionary Baptist Church, 929 State Street Community Event Drop off Sites: Community Town Hall Meeting, Wednesday, 4/25 5pm-7pm at Gateway Technical College-Racine Building 1001 Main Street Kiwanis “One Day Project”, Saturday, 4/21 10am–1pm at 2405 Northwestern
