From the Past President As outgoing President, it is my pleasure to recap a wonderful year for SEMC. The 2018 conference in Jackson was extremely successful in terms of both program and finances, and SEMC ends the year in great financial health. Thanks again to Executive Director Susan Perry, the SEMC Council, and the Jackson Program Committee and Local Arrangements Committee for your efforts to ensure conference success. Huge thanks also to Jackson host museums for their generosity, and congratulations on the amazing work happening there. And last but certainly not least, many thanks to the generous private and corporate donors for your support of the conference, its many events, and the important scholarships you helped to fund. On the financial side, I can also report the exciting news that SEMC has nearly reached a half-million dollars in endowment this year. This is an amazing feat and is truly significant for SEMC’s future sustainability and pursuit of innovative initiatives. Much of that funding has come from SEMC Council members and from generous member donors. As we work our way towards a million dollar balance, I hope you will all consider giving to the endowment. Speaking of innovative initiatives, we formally launched efforts toward a new National Leadership Institute. Inspired by the success of SEMC’s JIMI program, the Institute will provide a next level training opportunity for museum leaders. A stellar cast of advisors and collaborators will ensure that our first pilot program is an excellent start. We are currently deep into the planning process, including a new bid for an IMLS grant, and look forward to reporting more soon.

From the New President The future is bright for SEMC. As an organization we are strong, growing, forward thinking and committed to inclusion of all Southeastern cultural institutions and museum professionals. The feeling is positive and hopeful and I am truly honored to serve as President for the next two years. Involvement in SEMC has been transformational to my museum career and my leadership roles continue to define who I am as a professional both within the organization and at the Gibbes Museum of Art. I whole-heartedly believe in SEMC’s ability to connect people, inspire ideas and provide networks of support and friendship among institutions and colleagues. SEMC’s training programs, conferences, committees and affinity groups are essential to career development and remind us that our individual work contributes to something larger including the preservation and promotion of all the humanities. Exciting initiatives such as the National Leadership Institute will improve and expand our efforts to train future leaders on outward skill development to better serve their communities and institutions. Planning for the National Leadership Institute is comprehensive; cultivating support to ensure the program is financially stable

is essential. I encourage all of you to consider a gift toward this program and actively invest in SEMC’s future. As I often state in the mid-career sessions, nobody will ever care about your professional growth as much as you do! This is your career, make the most of it and get involved! SEMC will be with you throughout (student, emerging professional, mid-career professional, senior leadership) working to unite our Southeastern museums and provide opportunities for education, technical assistance, advocacy and training. I hope in the coming years you will continue to see transparency in all aspects of SEMC and understand the many ways to become a leader in our organization and enhance your professional life! Jackson, Mississippi museums showed us an amazing display of strength, support and progress at SEMC 2018. We can’t wait to continue the conversations and forward movement of this profession during SEMC 2019 in Charleston! Together we can continue to transform myths surrounding our institutions and histories and provide spaces of calm, truth and culture. Museums matter - it’s as simple as that. Our Mission The Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) is a networking organization that serves to foster professionalism, mutual support, and communication. A non-profit membership association, SEMC strives to increase educational and professional development opportunities and improve the interchange of ideas, information, and cooperation.
Our Impact SEMC members, at all stages of their career, find professional support and camaraderie from the SEMC leadership and members as they deepen their knowledge of museums, strengthen their practice and skills, promote diversity, and serve SEMC fellow members in need.
Our History 1951:

SEMC was established at a meeting in Norfolk, Virginia. It was agreed that the organization should include the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia. SEMC’s first task was to appoint a committee to get the Southeast included in a Congressional bill to appropriate money to provide places of
safe-keeping for museum objects in case of war. 1956:

Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia petitioned to join SEMC. The Council suggested they form their own organization, today known as the MidAtlantic Association of Museums.
1986:
Moved SEMC offices to Baton Rouge.
1992:
A full-time Executive Director and a Director of Office and Memberships services had been hired. Shortly after that, SEMC’s endowment was established to promote financial stability.
1996:
The JumpStart Program began. This program flourished during the first decade of the 21st century and is now known as the Jekyll Island Management Institute (JIMI), offering an eight-day intensive museum training to museum professionals with two years’ experience or more.
2003:
Moved the central offices of SEMC to Atlanta.
2005:
SEMC established a Hurricane Katrina grant fund and awarded over $500,000 to museums and museum employees affected by the storm in Mississippi and Louisiana.
2010:
SEMC established a partnership with Atlanta History Center where the SEMC office relocated.
2013:
SEMC, the five other regional museum associations, and the American Alliance of Museums completed the first National Museum Salary Survey, the only
Hosted two professional development workshops in North Carolina on museum training and historic house restoration. Our Past Year Highlights The year 2018 has been exciting for SEMC, which almost reached a half-million dollars at $499,304 in our Endowment Gift Campaign. SEMC continued its goal of financial stability and sustainability in fiscal year 2018 with a net of $78,505 and added $52,925 to the SEMC Reserve Fund and $25,580 to the SEMC Endowment. Thank you to those who contributed in the past year; the SEMC endowment now stands at $499,304 with recent market changes. SEMC had an awesome annual conference in Jackson with over 650 attendees. Over 70 volunteers welcomed Southeast museum professionals to Jackson. The 14 museums in Jackson hosted educational workshops, programs, off-site tours and fun evening events. In 2018 the SEMC Exhibitions, Publications and Technology Competitions had a record of 198 entries and 56 award winners. In addition to the selected four student presentations, this was the second year of Students Work in Museums (SWIM) poster

showcase. The SEMC Scholarship program offered 14 travel awards scholarships, including the Presidential scholarship, sponsored by Darcie MacMahon, the African American Museum Professional scholarship, and two scholarships for historic house museum professionals, sponsored by Historic House Museums Affinity Group (HHMAG) and John A. Woods Appraisers. Sixtysix program sessions, 9 off-site tours/workshops, and 63 Resource Expo exhibitors provided new ideas, professional expertise and best practices. This year many programs focused on diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice: “Meaningful Interpretation” workshop, “Talking Race: The Power, Influence and Responsibility of Museum Professionals,” “The Politics of Confederate Monuments & Commemoration in the 21st Century,” “SEMC Equity & Inclusion Action Team,” “Historic Decisions: Don’t Debate, Deliberate,” “Women on the Rise,” “Interpreting Racism Today,” “Mississippi Civil Rights Rise Up: The Making of a New State Museum,” “M.L. King
and the Civil Rights Movement,” “Dealing with Difficult Histories & Changing Visitor Perception,” and “Holding Space: The Power of Social Justice Work in Museums.” SEMC 2018 Annual Meeting culminated with the keynote address by poet Natasha Trethewey, a cry for social justice through family history and memories in poetry. The Council discussed our impact and joint vision for SEMC’s future. The Jekyll Island Management Institute 2018 (JIMI) had national impact with 20 participants from nine Southeastern states and from outside our region including Maryland and Pennsylvania. Thanks to the generosity of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and a five-year partnership with the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), SEMC was pleased to offer the John Kinard Scholarship for two AAAM members to attend JIMI. This year South Carolina Military Museum established a scholarship in memory of Col. Ewell G. “Buddy” Sturgis, Jr. (JIMI Class of 2010). JIMI 2018 provided leadership training for a dynamic, diverse class. SEMC joined NMAAHC and AAAM in sponsorship of the 2018 NMAAHC’s Interpretation of African American History and Culture Workshop presented in partnership with the Charleston County Parks & Recreation Commission. In its third year, this pilot
program built upon the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) core Interpretation Certification Program. The impact was clearly illustrated by the recent cohorts from a diverse range of museums and historic sites. SEMC wants to serve members’ diverse needs and improve communications. SEMC has expanded the content of social media coverage and digital communications. We had 170 new members in 2018, for a total membership of 2,337 members, including bundled members. SEMC realizes the potential to grow our membership, and wants to provide more membership benefits and resources. In 2018 SEMC rebranded with our new logo and website www.semcdirect.net. Also in 2018 SEMC leadership focused on the organization’s impact on museum professionals. In partnership with the Association of African American Museums, we are planning and fundraising for a National Leadership Institute. We are passionate about the professional support, camaraderie, and network of SEMC, and in the past year provided more opportunities for professional learning for Southeastern museum professionals.
