Fall 2017

Welcome to Tiny Tots! We encourage children to move during the program! Feel free to let your little ones get up, dance, and participate in the interactive moments. Please be mindful of musicians and other attendees. Look in the program notes for the interactive elements that are highlighted in purple text.

Have any questions, comments, or concerns? Find a Tiny Tots volunteer in a white t-shirt or an Inside the Orchestra staff member in a red t-shirt and we'll be happy to help!

About Us At Inside the Orchestra, we firmly believe that introducing children to the arts at a young age strengthens not only that child, but the community as well. In order to be inclusive of all children, we underwrite our concerts, thus providing experiences that are otherwise unavailable to many children, communities, and schools. Inside the Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Our Main Programs All of our programs get children inside the orchestra as they are seated on the floor and surrounded by professional musicians. Programs include diverse music and feature guest artists from other cultural organizations.

Tiny Tots Designed for children six and under. Tiny Tots seats the audience inside of a 30+ piece orchestra. Programs are held in locations all around the Denver metro area, from Parker to Boulder and in between.

Inside the Orchestra for Schools A 14+ piece orchestra outreach program for k-8 schoolchildren. Both the repertoire and approach to learning are designed to support and enhance the school curricula. Schools also receive in-depth follow-up sessions with our conductor.

Additional Programs Inside the Orchestra offers programs for children with sensory processing disorders and adults with dementia through partnerships with the Autism Society and Alzheimers Association. We also have performances for homeschool students in kindergarten through eighth grade. And for the grown-ups, we have one exciting, adults-only event a year, Inside the Orchestra for Adults. Find out more information about all of our programs at insidetheorchestra.org

Conductor Steven Aguiló-Arbues Argentinian-American Steven Aguiló-Arbues enjoys his roles as a conductor, vocal coach, répétiteur, and recitalist. Program Notes In the Hall of the Mountain King This piece is from Peer Gynt, a play about the escapades of a Norwegian hunter. This piece tells the story of Peer as he enters into the underground world of the moutain trolls. In this piece, kids will get to grow along with the music as it gets louder. Bacchanale Bacchanale is from Saint-Saens three-act opera "Samson and Delilah". It opens with an oboe solo that is characteristic of the instrument's sound. The conductor will "take the music apart and put it back together" just like kids to with toys. Ein Mädchen Oder Weibchen This aria from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" is sung by Papageno, a bird catcher. In this aria, he sings along with a music box about how much he would like a wife. Our conductor will tell the story of the music box and kids will mimic playing a music box to bring out our guest from Central City Opera. Sorcerer's Apprentice Just like Disney depicts in Fantasia, Dukas based this piece off a poem by Goethe where a sorcerer's apprentice accidentally fills his workshop with water while trying to hurry through chores. Our conductor will tell the kids about Mickey Mouse's mishap with the buckets of water and the kids will pretend to be Mickey with his buckets. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik Dancers from the Hannah Kahn Dance company will join the orchestra for this well-known piece. This piece has four movements and today you will hear sections of two contrasting movements. Hear how music can portray very different emotions and watch as the dancers show us these emotions with their dancing.

Meditation from Thais This piece was written to be played in between two acts of Massenet's opera Thais and features solo violin. Take out your favorite toy during this soft and warm piece. This music sounds like it could end multiple times and kids will be encouraged to clap when they think we've finally reached the end. Hoe-Down This is the final movement from a ballet composed by Copland, one of the best-known American composers, called "Rodeo". It portrays the Wild West in all its cowboy glory. Kids can pretend to be cowboys and cowgirls. Carnival of the Animals: The Elephant, The Aviary, The Swan, Finale Saint-Saens wrote this piece purely "for fun" after a failed concert tour in Germany. Each mini-movement depicts specific characters, primarily animals. In The Elephant, pretend your arms are elephant trunks. In The Aviary, act like little chickens. In The Swan, use your arms as big swan wings. In The Finale, get ready for a dance party! Toccata and Fugue This piece is originally composed for organ, and today we'll hear an orchestra arrangement. This spooky music is often associated with Halloween and scary stories. There is a lot of uncertainty around the piece and when it was composed and some people say Bach wrote it to depict the sounds of a storm. How Far I'll Go How many of you have been singing this fun song since Moana premiered last November? Another special guest will join us for this song. We hope you'll all sing along with us- the lyrics are on the next page! Firebird The Firebird ballet is the story of a magical bird that goes on a quest to save seven princesses. The music is so popular that it was turned into a suite and is often played without dancers. Spread your wings and soar to this music.

How Far I'll Go Lyrics I've been staring at the edge of the water 'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why I wish I could be the perfect daughter But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try Every turn I take, every trail I track Every path I make, every road leads back To the place I know, where I can not go, where I long to be See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me And no one knows, how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go I know everybody on this island, seems so happy on this island Everything is by design I know everybody on this island has a role on this island So maybe I can roll with mine I can lead with pride, I can make us strong I'll be satisfied if I play along But the voice inside sings a different song What is wrong with me? See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding But no one knows, how deep it goes And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me And let me know, what's beyond that line, will I cross that line? The line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me And no one knows, how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, how far I'll go
