PROGRAMNOTES
SymphonyNo.6,mvt.I- by Ludwig van Beethoven - This symphony is also known as the Pastoral Symphony (composed in 1808), and the first movement is titled “Awakening of cheerful feelings on arrival in the countryside.” Beethoven loved to visit the country side and go for long walks. Some may recognize this music as being used in Disney’s Fantasia from 1940.
YouAreMySunshine - This song was written in 1939 by Charles Mitchell and Jimmie Davis, who would later become a Louisiana Governor. It is one of the state songs of Louisiana. Let’s all get up and dance while our brass section (trumpets, horns, trombone, and tuba) plays this piece in a Louisiana Jazz style!
FlightoftheBumblebee - This music is from Russian composer Nikolai RimskyKorsakov’s 1900 opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan. In this piece, the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon into an insect so he can fly away to visit his father. Listen for the flute, who plays lots of fast, slurred notes, to depict a bumblebee.
SweetBabyButterfly - Chloe from Central City Opera joins us for this art song from Five Fairy Ballads by black English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912). The text is based on poetry by Kathleen Easmon, the first West African to earn a diploma from the Royal College of Arts. Move your arms like butterfly wings and fly along with us!
AntsgoMarching - We put an Inside the Orchestra spin on this counting song based on the tune of When Johnny Comes Marching Home, where the little one will stop to play the drums, play the flute, pluck some strings, conduct a score, and jump and jive!
VictoriaGallop - This was originally composed for wind band in 1839 by black American composer Frances Johnson (1792-1844), who was the first African American to have his works published as sheet music. Gallop along with us and listen for the tempo (i.e., speed) changes while you ride!
BearNecessities - Forget about your worries and your strife with this number written by Terry Gilkyson for the 1967 Disney film The Jungle Book, based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. Dance and sing along with Nathan from Central City Opera.
PROGRAMNOTES,CONTINUED
BearHunt-This American folk song anecdotally originated in the 1970s. Get your binoculars and come along with Chloe, Nathan, and the orchestra on a bear hunt. We’ll swish through tall grass, splash through a big river, squish through mud, and go into a cave. We might just find a bear!
WearetheDinosaurs- Many dinosaur fossils and footprints have been found in Colorado, including the first discovered triceratops. During this song, written by living American singer-songwriter Laurie Berkner, we’ll all pretend to be dinosaurs! We’ll march around, stop and eat our food, stop and take a rest, and, of course, ROAR!
GoldilocksandtheThreeHorns- This is a world premiere of an Inside the Orchestra version of the classic story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Listen for excerpts from well-known orchestral literature, as a curious girl sneaks into a concert hall and tries out orchestra instruments! You’ll even hear a reprise of the “walking theme” from Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony from earlier in the program.
DeColores- This Mexican folk song is commonly sung in many Spanish-speaking countries, and may have roots in the 16th century. The title translates to “of Colors,” or ”Made of Colors,” and the lyrics speak of the beautiful colors found in nature.
