SPRING
2018
WELCOME TO TINY TOTS! We encourage children to move during the program! Feel free to let little ones get up, dance, and participate in the interactive moments. However, we request that all participants refrain from touching performers or other attendees - as well as instruments (without express permission).
Have any questions, comments, or concerns? Find a volunteer or staff member in a Tiny Tots shirt and we'll be happy to help!
ABOUT US Inside the Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We firmly believe that introducing children to the world of music and the arts at a young age strengthens not only that child, but the community as a whole. In order to be inclusive of all children, we underwrite our concerts, thus providing experiences that are otherwise unavailable to many children, communities, and schools.
Our Main Programs Our programs get children "inside the orchestra" by seating them on the floor and surrounding them with professional musicians and performers. Programs include diverse music and feature guest artists from other cultural organizations.
Tiny Tots Designed for children six and under. Tiny Tots seats the audience inside of a 30+ piece orchestra. Programs are held in locations all around the Denver metro area, from Parker to Boulder and in between.
Inside the Orchestra for Schools A 14-16 piece orchestra outreach program for k-8 schoolchildren. The repertoire and approach to learning are designed to support and enhance school curricula. We offer this program in English and Spanish/English bilingual formats.
Additional Programs Inside the Orchestra offers programs for children with sensory processing disorders in partnership with the Autism Society, programs for home school students in kindergarten through 8th grade, and - for the grownups - we have one exciting adults-only event per year, Inside the Orchestra for Adults Find out more information about all of our programs at insidetheorchestra.org

PROGRAM NOTES Star Wars John Williams has composed some of the most iconic movie music ever, including all the music from the Star Wars franchise. Today we'll hear snippets from the Imperial March and Princess Leia's Theme and all of the Main Theme. Listen to the different families of instruments as they portray different characters: some can sound like heroes and some can sound like villains. Then listen to them all come together to join forces.
Superman March The Superman March starts with a noble fanfare of triumphant trumpets, brass, and percussion. The music soars just like Superman himself. Kids can stand up (or stay seated), spread their capes (or pretend capes), and pretend to fly.
Ride of the Valkyries Ride of the Valkyries is one of the most famous pieces of music from all of Wagner's operas. It is about the eight Valkyrie sisters who decide the fate of all those who fight in battle. Listen to what heroes sound like in orchestra music and imagine yourself as a strong and brave hero.
Ma Vlast- Moldau Smetana's piece Ma Vlast, meaning "My Homeland," is about his home country, the modern-day Czech Republic. This movement is about the Vltava River, one of the regions largest rivers. The music flows and grows just like the river in real life. Pretend like you're the hero on the river journey- row your boat, rock in the water, and notice how the music, or the river, feels.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik A dancer from the Hannah Kahn Dance Company will join the orchestra for this well-known piece. This piece has four movements and today you will hear sections of two contrasting movements . Watch how a soloist can be the hero of a performance.
PROGRAM NOTES CONTINUED Cavalleria Rusticana- Intermezzo Cavalleria Rusticana is an opera premiered in 1890. Though not frequently performed as a whole today, the Intermezzo is still widely performed. What are ways you can be a hero every day? Close your eyes and imagine all the ways you can be a hero and what that might feel like. This music sounds hopeful and magical, like being an everyday hero.
You've Got A Friend In Me Not much needs to be said about this well-known piece if music from Toy Story! Heroes aren't just people in capes with super powers. You can be a hero to by being someone's friend.
The Incredibles Here is some more music about superheroes that you may recognize. The music from The Incredibles won many awards for best score and was even nominated for a Grammy. Let's act out all the powers of each member of this super family! We'll run with warp speed, stretch our body super far, become invisible, use our brains to be extra smart, and pretend to be extra strong.
Carmen- Toreador Song The Toreador Song is the popular name of the aria "Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre" from the opera Carmen. In this aria, a bullfighter describes the feats he has accomplished and sings about all the fame and fortune that come with it. He is boastful - he's sure he is the hero, even if we're not so sure. This piece will feature a performer from Central City Opera.
Symphony No. 3 Movement 3 This is a very important Symphony as it is thought to be the bridge between Classical and Romantic styles of music. Beethoven wrote it in memory of great heroes and he gave it the alternate title of "Eroica," or Heroic. Listen for the triumphant horns and pretend to play the horn when you hear them. Hakuna Matata Hakuna Matata is a common Swahili language phrase, and as the song says, it does roughly translate to "No worries!" Today we've heard music all about heroes, but now it's time to get up and dance and sing along!
