What started years ago as a personal dream of transforming my own experiences into elegant forms, rapidly grew into a successful international brand that presents beautifully handcrafted creations to the World. My collections embody distinct influences to create a unique vision that gathers the wild side of the natural wonders with a fabulous modern lifestyle. Here you will find an exclusive Land where everything can happen and anything is possible. Mountains turn into surprising armchairs, trees become mysterious cabinets, an architectural detail is captured by a geometric lighting and even a famous painting is reinvented in a exquisite table. INSIDHERLAND ESSENCE Created by Architect Joana Santos Barbosa in 2012, INSIDHERLAND is a Portuguese brand of exclusive design. Drawn with the signature of the creator, the impressive range of furniture, lighting, upholstery and accessories are connected to her personal memories and have been highlighted for their innovative and soulful designs. Joana explores several influences from travels around the world to define her own Land as a place that allows her to translate her perceptions into objects of art. INSIDHERLAND presents two inspiring collections. Beyond Memory Collection is deeply influenced by organic forms of nature, legends and traditional cultures, as for the Identity Collection is molded by forms of Architecture and Art. Both collections are designed as a dialog in which nature meets strong architectural lines to create relaxed and sophisticated interiors surrounded by natural materials and meaningful art pieces. Being positioned in strategic markets of high-end luxury decoration, INSIDHERLAND team is proud of working with the best architects and interior design studios from all over the world who seek for handmade exclusive objects that arouse emotions and stand out in exquisite spaces. We are dedicated with love and enthusiasm into every creation to surprise a sensitive but demanding public. Using the expertise of traditional craft techniques, all creations are made by the hands of Portuguese master craftsmen and jewelers who wisely sculpt them in noble materials, finalizing every detail with elegance and perfection.

JOANA SANTOS BARBOSA Born in Oporto, Joana graduated in Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Oporto in 2006, later deepening her knowledge in Interior Design at St. Martin's School of Arts and Design in London. Alongside with Architecture, the passion for the Detail motivated her to create her own furniture design. Joana soon saw her talent recognized, being considered as one of the Top 10 Contemporary Designers from Portugal. Earning her place in the international design scene, she was invited to exhibit at the XX Triennale International Exhibition in Milan and her work can be regularly seen in the most prestigious design and decoration events in London, Paris and Milan. Having a refined intuition and a particular way of feeling, Joana has a vein of attachment to the Land and a devotion to the senses. Her creative path is a mirror of her personality and results from the profound connections she early developed with the natural world, the travels that opened her eyes to other cultures and her progress in classical music and dance alongside with her training in architecture. From her training she takes the discipline and persistence in the pursuit of the unquestionable accuracy. From the World she seizes cultures and contexts, dissects memories and rearranges concepts, taking them as starting points for the creative liberation.







IDENTITY COLLECTION As trained architect, Joana Santos Barbosa received a variety of influences that defined her creativity. Identity collection unveils a series of striking modern objects considered as fragments from the contact with architecture along with other artistic forms such as painting, sculpture and music. The collection is a defining guidance of a journey that explores the fusion between these disciplines with a conceptual freedom. If some creations descend from identified images, others seem abstract productions that interpret awakening details of the creative process. INSIDHERLAND pieces are made by craftsmen, using handcrafted techniques, which may result in small differences between pieces of the same model making each piece particularly unique and exclusive.

EIDOLA: weiland Pianist, 1940, belongs to a series of 24 drawings created in the final stage of Paul Klee's life. Among them, the Swiss painter and musician portrays the souls of musicians who, having lost their instruments, continue to play music using their own bodies. In Pianist, the keyboard is presented as part of the body, but in detail, Klee's drawing presents only the piano's black keys, leaving the white keys on invisibility. “I started playing piano at age of nine and know the keyboard by heart. Once I put my hands on the keyboard, I see not only the cadence of the keys but the gracefulness of the fingers gliding over them.” JSB The Pianist center table, doesn't represent the piano but the hands of the artist, vehicle of technique and emotion. The brass blades design the shape of the four longest fingers that, on a white keyboard in Estremoz marble, release a melody hidden within the musical notes.

Contrary to the Doric, the oldest order, the columns of Ionic and Corinthian orders were composed by three elements: base, shaft and capital. As centuries passed by, many of the impressive temples were destroyed or simply collapsed. The remains of Ionic temples with their beautiful surviving columns motivated the creation of the Ionic side tables, each one with tripartite columns missing one of its elements. This approach of an incomplete Ionic column presents uniquely the non ornamented forms of the base and capital as the missing shaft has been replaced by a modern metal structure that embraces the two separated elements. Countering the construction process of ancient temples, the tapered design allows less contact with the floor, in allusion to what would be the use of free modern forms in the tripartite construction of a classical temple.

The Niemeyer armchair is named after the Brazilian Architect Oscar Niemeyer whose Architecture was spread like sculptural poetry in the History of humankind. The rounded lines of the armchair are influenced by the remarkable 'Casa das Canoas' designed by Niemeyer in 1951. Looking on the human scale point of view, the house glass facade disappears within the tropical forest, however, from an aerial view, the sculpted concrete flat roof floating on pillars stands out in the landscape. The flat roof offers its flowing forms to the round velvet seat while the pillars share their black tone with the darkened oak legs. In detail, the armchair is focused on the roof indented front curve framing a large granite boulder. It is precisely that backward curved movement that we discover in the seams of the meticulous upholstered work that flows all around the arms of the armchair.

To draw the way in which objects appear to the eye on a flat surface requires a technique that represents the three-dimensional spatial relations and reduces the projected size of objects with distance. After the initial attempt by the Greeks and the Romans cultures to define the spatial depth, it was in Italy that the renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi rediscovered the rules of perspective by observing that with a fixed single point of view, parallel lines appear to converge at one point in the distance. The Perspective dining chair is an exercise that gathers both two and three dimensions in one single perception. In fact, as if we were looking to its own drawn perspective, the lines of the dining chair perform an inflection and visually appear as converging in order to give the illusion of depth. An intentional way of having the flat image of the drawing transported to the object and not the other way around.

The Looshaus building by Architect Adolf Loos in Vienna marked a turning point in Architecture by its rejection of historicism and the evolution towards Modernism. The building states a series of Loos beliefs on his essay ‘Ornament and Crime’ (1908) in which he exposes that “The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornaments from utilitarian objects.” and describes how ornamentation can cause objects to go out of style and thus become obsolete. The radical aesthetic of Loos essay ‘Ornament and Crime’ implemented on the marble facade of the Looshaus building ground floor columns triggered a reflection about the purism of materials and forms. The Looshaus wall lamp is austere both in its massive blocks of carved Carrara marble as in the choice of the brass columns that allow the transparency of an illuminated gallery in its interior. It is visually pure and minimal in its hidden functionality. No ornaments are needed to strength its singularity.

The Seagram table lamp receives the name of the first attempt at skyscraper construction by the acclaimed GermanAmerican architect Mies van der Rohe. Located in Manhattan, New York City, the Seagram building was completed in 1958 and gathers the principles of modernism along with the functionalist aesthetic. The table lamp is a block of Extremoz marble involved by vertical brass blades carefully inserted as an allusion to modern metal structures and follows Mies beliefs that a building's structure should be visible as an external expression with no decorative elements. Although, in fact, for others reasons the original steel structure of the Seagram building couldn’t be visible, Mies used non-structural vertical bronze elements to suggest an outside structure protecting a continuous glass skin underneath.

Metal frame: polished, brushed, oxidized brushed or aged brushed brass/copper/steel. A person’s Identity isn’t an immediate perception but, instead, it has to be unveiled. It is fed by external influences and watered by deep feelings and experiences that can be exalted or just kept as a treasure inside one's heart. The Unveil mirror portraits the unknowns of human Identity. The simple frame in brushed brass with round corners means that first look to someone, when, sometimes, we wrongly believe that we already have seen it all. However, we only see what’s allowed for us to capture and so, a small fragment of a more complex formation. When we get interested to get closer to the Unveil mirror, we certainly discover new perspectives that will enlighten us. This surprise factor is interpreted by a continuous border in walnut veneer with thousands of natural wood veins to admire. They not only contrast with the quiet golden frame but actually remain hidden behind it. Because sometimes it's worth to unveil one's true Identity.




BEYOND MEMORY COLLECTION The creative eye of Joana Santos Barbosa contemplates the past and changes a distant reality by creating connections, eliminating the unnecessary and adding details that could have been true. In the Beyond Memory Collection, the author transforms travels to the past into meaningful pieces that go far beyond what the memory recalls. By taking nature's organic forms, the treasures of native cultures or the mysteries of powerful legends, the pieces of the collection have a natural delicacy and are designed to catch the eye within most sophisticated interiors. In the impressive Navajoland territory located in Arizona we find Navajo Canyon, a magnificent cliff formation. The sandstone waved walls in brownish red and white tones contrasting with Lake Powell’s blue waters perform an impressive sight. The cabinet Navajo Canyon reinvents the majesty of cliffs with their twists and turns along the Colorado River. With the identical proportions and tones of the rock formations sedimented over thousands of years, this cabinet is built through a complex process finished in full height walnut veneer and its base in white sycamore. By accentuating the long exterior lines without any visible opening, the apparently solid volume resembles the stone walls. Inside, two glass shelves go unnoticed while the turquoise silhouette of the Colorado River suddenly appears between the drawers. Taking advantage of the natural curves, each drawer opens, unveiling its interior totally lacquered in the same hue which gives us the feeling of jumping in freefall from the top of the cliff to dive in the crystal clear waters of the river.

Base and shelves: aged brushed or oxidized brushed brass/copper/ steel. Many years after visited the heart of Sweden, Joana Santos Barbosa created a bookcase to celebrate the charm of Nordic nature. Into the Woods carries the feeling of a long walk through the forest beneath intertwined branches of huge trees to reach the top of a mountain. The enchanting path is captured by the angular shape of the bookcase in which four vertical elements in walnut obtain a slight slope that emphasizes the perspective of the lengthy tree trunks along the way. Each element is also highlighted by the tapered end, as if we were looking to the slender trees reaching the sky. In a gentle embrace, each vertical element extends an arm of stylized brass blades designed to freely touch the remaining tree trunks and create four shelves. Each organic element of the bookcase creates a variety of shadows that move according to the lights of the surrounding space.

The Special Tree is a tree in which two lovers write the promise of an everlasting love; a small tree on the bank of a lake . Five ‘treetops’ on top of 'trunks' in polished copper form an imposing grove with the splendor of autumn colors. The craftsmanship on the exotic veneers emphasizes the rich tonal variations and creates ripples that remind us of the wind flow among the trees. In a jewelry work, the base in polished copper, is chiseled with five types of fallen leaves representing each one of the species, a work that is repeated in the carved recording of the creation’s name in the ‘trunk’ of the central The Special Tree. Inside the volumes, the tone of warm beams of sunlight piercing through the trees is captured in the high gloss satinwood finish punctuated by glass shelves. Inside of The Special Tree, small wavy copper 'branches' were designed to appear to be levitating while lifting the shelves.

The Special Tree sideboard is a redesign of the original cabinet with the same name. Featuring the Summer season, three types of exotic roots in their natural color in high gloss finish cover this empowering creation while the interior remains in satinwood. The base and the tree trunks are in oxidized brushed brass and, in the center, the most special tree preserves the subtle carved jewelry work with the name of the creation as well as small wavy brass 'branches' lifting the interior glass shelf.

Inside space lacquered in high-gloss varnish. PRODUCT OPTIONS Under request. Homeland represents the values of the safe place where we are born. Recreating the image of an ancient cottage with irregular whitewashed walls, Homeland results from a thorough handmade work endowed by unrepeatable details. Compact in appearance, with a demanding design and a refined woodwork, this piece seems to be an impenetrable "wall". However, it reveals to be a surprising sideboard. Integrally covered by hand, the irregularity surprises by the high quality of his satiny touch. The interior includes four shelves and the upper level conceals two drawers lined with white velvet, one of them a cutlery drawer. The central perforated doors are light and loose and present a minimal approach. This effect was achieved by the creation of INSIDHERLAND small pivot hinges . The interior of the central space is symbolizes the warmth of affection in the splendor of a home in which an intense gold lights the painting in earth tones with a high gloss varnish finish.

Lined with normal/bronze/aged mirror or white/black lacquered glass. “On the center of a lake, a few autumn leaves stand over Three Rocks that sparkle with the water that flows around them.” JSB Fallen freely on each of the three tables, we find small leaves embedded by the hands of a craftsman with the art of marquetry. The work is performed entirely by hand with wisdom and perfection. The robust volumes, with their shapes irregularly cut, are finished in smoky brown birds eye veneer in high gloss varnish. The small dotted nodules of this veneer resembling the texture of a true rock and the high gloss finish to the lake water, turning these three tables almost an exact picture of the idyllic vision of a lake in autumn.

The robust volume of Rock dining table entirely finished in walnut veneer on an elegant faceted work that resembles the irregular nature of rocks, descends from the original designs created on the Three Rocks set of center and side tables. Completed with a round top is in glass, the construction process is entirely involved with the skills of Portuguese artisans to achieve the singularity of an exceptional handmade central piece designed for the most distinctive interiors.

Alentejo side table is a glimpse over the South of Portugal where thousands of cork oaks trees raise their canopies to the sky. Overlapped on branches opened in obtuse angles, the canopies are separated from their support bases, being gracefully balanced above the ground. These typical trees seem like tables spread across the horizon. Choosing one of the four tops available, we approach the different seasons: Spring in a dark green lacquered, Summer in a sunburned tone of walnut marquetry, Autumn in an empty space of acrylic and Winter in the white hues of Estremoz marble. The slender base in cast brass with patinated effect results of a careful sculpted work that highlights the natural details. Each root lightly touches the ground taking its own direction as shadows that vanish into the landscape.

Mother Nature carved a paradise called Na Pali located on Kaua'i, an island remnant from the force of a volcano with five million years with its profile drawn by rain and the blasts of winter waves against the basalt cliffs. Spectacular, imposing and lush, Na Pali that means "the cliffs", is a breathtaking landscape. The Na Pali tables recreate the incredible natural needle shapes throughout the mountainous slope. The connection between the pieces of wood structure finished in walnut veneer appears reduced in oxidized brushed brass and the glass tops assume the central faceted shape, allowing the observation of each individual blade between the empty spaces.

Inspired by the trees that in autumn hold their foliage with difficulty, Tree Branches is a side table entirely handcrafted with traditional techniques like marquetry and hammered metal that transmits the nakedness of the season. Three ​vertical 'branches' in hammered brass are elevated by three identical diagonals 'branches' that contact with the ground, creating the illusion that the vertical 'branches' ​are keystones to balance the slender structure. The incomplete crown of leaves allows a better view of small leaves distributed by several minor branches, still resistant to the passage of the season. All leaves are exquisitely executed in wood with bevelled finish in rosewood, ebony and olive tree veneer in half gloss varnish, covered by a glass top which reinforces the thin image of the set.

Four... for Luck is a special clover with a creative process based on the interpretation of the Legend of the four leaf clover, in which each petal represents a meaning. The concept of total independence was explored so that the four constituent parts of the whole - Hope, Faith, Love and Luck - can play a free specific role whenever necessary. Slender and projected in the air, each petal finished in listed rosewood veneer is like a real leaf in which the organic thin stem rises dividing it into two parts. This detail of separation that creates the continuity between petal and stem is emphasized in polished brass. The excellence of materials and finishes combined with the accuracy of the small details makes this center table a true refined and elegant piece.

Continuing the interpretation of the Legend of the four leaf clover materialized in the Four... for Luck center table, the console explores the meaning of Luck. On the top made with exquisite rosewood marquetry work, it is drawn an intentional chaos under which each four leaf clover is only revealed only with a careful look. The clovers seem to strive for a major role, overlapping imaginarily on a common plan. Starting with the elegance of these plants removed from the land, their original proportion is emphasized with total freedom. The long stems in polished brass acquire enormous proportions that appear to invent a wavy dance that unites them, making them stronger parts of a whole. If one day we would found a garden of these mystical amulets, the power of the fourth leaf wouldn’t be a prize offered by chance and Luck would become a personal achievement obtained through the watchful eye of each one of us.

The irregular shapes of the side table were originally created to allow that a unique design could have two different functionalities depending on the chosen finish. The long curves of this mountain were taken to the armchair’s exterior and the mountainside ripples, that seem to have been dug by large fingers coming from the sky, were placed on the inside. The top of the armchair features the great bow of the skyline and the yellow tone of the ground is replaced by the base in brushed brass. Both soft velvet and brass are reunited in the soft curves that go all around this compact creation. Just like the mountain meets the land.

Raised as a trophy by four hand-carved whelks covered with gold leaf, Between Waves values the concept of protection as a shell that keeps inside a delicate and undefended being. As sand streaked by the retreat of waves of foam, this shell is ribbed in a shade of sand lacquered half brightness. The angular hardness of the rocks is mirrored in the geometry of the volumetry and the carved edges performed with skill. By stealing the soft touch of perfectly polished pebbles from reality, the loose cushions in cotton velvet in oceans tones contrast with the exquisite interior covered with gold leaf. A construction detail causes a subtle wave of the side cushions, again bringing to mind the undulating motion of the sea.

Alentejo table lamp has the similar conceptual approach to the typical cork oaks trees we find in the South of Portugal, originally made by the Alentejo side table. Overlapped on branches opened in obtuse angles, the canopies are separated from their support bases, being gracefully balanced above the ground. The base in cast brass with patinated effect results of a careful sculpted work that highlights the natural details. Each root lightly touches the ground taking its own direction as shadows that vanish into the landscape.

The Tree Branches wall lamp handcrafted in hammered patinated brass is a conceptual approach, designed to recreate the sunbeams that pierce the density of forests. The clean lines of this stylish piece have the same technique of the original side table, using a more detailed approximation as if we were closely looking to a single branch that hides us from the sunlight while we stand in its shadow. Therefore, the light only appears on a secondary plan, brightening the wall around it.

Alentejo mirror has the similar conceptual approach to the typical cork oaks trees we find in the South of Portugal, originally made by the Alentejo side table. Resembling the same angular structure of these trees, the mirror is embraced by two grand tree trunks which branches are opened in obtuse angles. In fact, this creation was once again influenced by a particular tree standing near a lake that naturally reflects a perfect match of itself in the water mirror. The structure is in cast brass with patinated effect and results of a careful sculpted work that highlights the natural details.

After creating the bookcase Into the Woods to represent a long walk through the Swedish woods towards the top a mountain, Joana Santos Barbosa conceived the mirror Tuna Kvarn to show her vision when she reached the top. The irregular forms of the frozen lake, created by a mirror, are as faithful to reality as the distant memory allowed. The complexity of thick grove around the lake collects 88 pieces in cast brass, each one presented as a single tree, in a handcrafted detailed process of adaptation and connection between the pieces. To complete the intention, the aged effect adds the finishing touch to the contrast between the shadows and the lit treetops seen from above. The rectangular shape of the mirror frame allows the viewer to look at the landscape directly from the camera's viewfinder to recover the exact moment that Joana didn’t get the chance to photograph, but instead, remained forever in her memory.

The Osani game is played by Efé children of the Ituri tropical forest in the Republic of Congo. Sitting in a circle with feet touching in the center, each child in turn names a round object and then names a figurative expression of “round”, like the circle of the family or the cycle of the moon. As players fail to come up with a term that is “circular” they are eliminated from the game. In the end, only one will remain and tradition says this player will live a long and prosperous life. The human circle inspired Joana Santos Barbosa to create a round mirror that represents the spirit of mutual help in this tribe, thought to be one of the oldest on earth. The ebony veneer captures the effect of the childrens’ outstretched legs around the center, and the aged gold leaf brings to mind the soles of their feet and their sun-bleached heads. The circle is the perfect form in which no side stands out. Like every child, every part of this mirror becomes essential to its balance where the flow of energy around center is identical and of equal value; without beginning or end. The handmade traditional art of marquetry is the queen of the set by putting together three different tones and shapes of burned rosewood, ebony and olive tree in half gloss finish that perfectly imitate the dry touch of autumnal leaves. The beveled details allow each leave to detach from the wall, in a seemingly disorganized set that honors the splendor of the season.

Fallen Leaves were removed from the water still dotted with small drops reflecting the surrounding as real mirrors. The natural aging revealed by the broken tips of these leaves is created by the hand carved structure with the wisdom of master craftsmen, whose hands give life to the natural details, and the gradients in warm tones of gold and copper leaf extol the reflection of water between brushstrokes coming from the spectacular palette of autumnal colors. Bringing these autumnal leaves to the comfort of the interior, the orientation of the five mirrors is free as if we photographed the leaves in free fall, creating many combination possibilities.
