Biometric Attendance : A Necessity ?
Life @ IITB : Freshies Perspective
Upcoming Events Web Designing Competition for freshers Contact: Web and Coding Club
It has been 2 months since the freshies entered the campus and it may interest us to know how they view this campus which has been our home away from home. Well this is what we learnt:
Well, in an objec ve sense, the ins tute has realized that the old prac ces of a endance policies were not in line with the wired genera on. Biometric A endance Policy has started becoming the norm in many iits including ours. ‘The implementa on of this policy is only experimental’ say sources in the academia. Since its implementa on, there has been some problem with the machines used for biometric a endance. According to the people concerned, the mechanism is designed in such a way that for lectures at 08:30 AM and 02.00 PM the students are allowed to register their a endance 10 minutes earlier and for the rest of the lectures they will have to register the a endance 2 minutes before the lecture begins. It has been learnt that many students, especially those who do not check their GPO mails regularly, were ignorant on this issue. So such students who very well a ended the lectures have been registered absent on many days. There is also some more confusion on this issue that the system would automa cally record those students who do not have 80% a endance with an XX grade without the interven on of the professor. Many more students have complained that out of the 12 lectures they have a ended ll midsem for many lectures the data is not available, they have been marked N/A. Regarding this issue students have been spamming the moodle page. It has caused lots of chaos among the student community. Besides this, the biometric reader is not fool proof. It was found that proxies can also be given. Many-a- mes a student is prone to register the a endance and leave the hall before the lecturer or the associated Teaching Assistants have arrived. It would have been be er tested experimentally if they could have recorded the student’s a endance in the hardcopy too, un l they were clear with the performance of the system.
Ini ally they were shocked on seeing their rooms allocated, while me has made it the place where they enjoy being the most. They have started experiencing the trials and tribula ons of the NIGHT-OUTS. The mid-sems have taught them so much about the iit life. The morning classes have made them catch the breads and run a9er the tumtums. Well , some of them are amazed at the opportuni es that the ins tute provides. They learn leadership quali es and me management and many more which may not carry credits according to the iit life but valued much more in the real life. It has provided umpteen opportuni es to develop their hobbies. Not-to-forget DC++: our god. They are fla ered by the speed that it provides. They are quite worried about the LAN-BAN as anyone of us would be. Well, they fret on their MA and CH courses. Many of them are eager to join as Mood I organizers especially in hospitality :P. They are very confident that when they pass out of this grand ins tute they will not only be the best engineers but also with be er people skills!!
