COVER STORY The cover motif is a sculpture known as Kumica Barica, the work of academic sculptor Josip Gračan. It is a symbol of the Dolac market, placed in 2006 on the top end of the stairs at the Markets' entrance, in honor of all the “Kumice” who sell at the market. When the sculpture was installed, the people of Zagreb chose the name Barica. Kumice are women who sell their own produce or homemade cheese and cream at the market. Miss Đurđica Janušić was a model of this statue. She has been selling her produce at Dolac market for 60 years now, so when you visit the market, you can stop by her bench as well (the sixth one from the Cathedral). The Dolac market has been in its present location for 62 years now, visited daily by 6.000 people and on the weekend up to 20.000.

DISCOVER LOCAL SUBTLE DESIGNS IN THESE interviews we present fashion designer Iva Karačić, Ivana Pavlović for Zmajevna Concept Store & Ivana Klapšić for Colewos Croatian fashion brand
unusual pieces that are at the same time wearable, practical and feminine. My collections are based on asymmetric cuts that I like to play with, rotate and combine in completely unpredictable places. On the one hand, total asymmetry prevails, while on the other end, simplicity stands as a balance for a complete fashion story. The creations are playful, because women love to wear lavish models made of fine materials, including silk and cotton.
IVA KARAČIĆ FASHION, IVA KARAČIĆ Can you bring closer your fashion label Iva Karačić to us and also the guidelines that you follow in your work? Everything that I feel and see, I transfer into my clothes. My life attitudes and all my beliefs. And I think that is the reason why you will always feel comfortable in my clothes, and at the same time "dressed up", as most of my clients like to say. Comfort, in my opinion, is very important, because clothes should not smother us. They should set us free, in movement, as well as in our minds. Clothes are also our means of communication, since we introduce ourselves to others through clothes. In my designs refinement is important as well, because in my clothes you can go to a business meeting, but also to the market. At the end it depends on your wishes as a client as well.
What does your job mean to you and where do you draw inspiration for your creations? In addition to being a designer, I am also a mother of two beautiful children and my family gives me full support. I would say that they are my support and my main motivation. It is not always easy to create clothes, not easy to create anything for that matter, because you often question whether you are good enough. Nevertheless, creating clothes for women is my call and my business life love.
ZMAJEVNA CONCEPT STORE, IVANA PAVLOVIĆ You have recently opened Zmajevna Concept Store in the very city center. Can you describe the store’s offer and concept to us? Zmajevna Concept Store opened its doors in May this year. It was designed as a store that represents Croatian designers, artists and creatives who make quality unique products by hand. So you can find clothes, bags, backpacks, jewelry, ceramics and home decorations in it. Over time, the range of products will change, so we will be able to present an increasing number of creatives, whose number in our country is luckily growing. You are a bag designer. What materials do you make them from and what makes them special? Under the Zmajevna brand, I have been making backpacks and bags from artificial leather and canvas for many years. I do the whole process from designing, tailoring to sewing myself. All my creations follow an urban style in which the minimalism of geometric shapes prevails, and the emphasis on each model is ease of use.
How do you see design, fashion and entrepreneurship today? What guidelines do you follow in your creations? Fashion is a field that is constantly subject to changes and cycles through which new ideas are created and old ideas are recycled, which opens up a field of diverse possibilities for designers. If this is combined with entrepreneurial skills, success is undoubtedly possible, at least in the local environment. The innovation and originality of the product, but also the quality that results in customer satisfaction, are what ensure the progress of entrepreneurship. What is your current inspiration and what are your plans for the future? In addition to backpacks and bags, a collection of clothing and jewelry will soon be available under the Zmajevna brand, which will have the same design guidelines and thus round off the product range into a complete fashion unit. The concept store will continue to follow the idea of presenting local creatives with the desire to encourage and spread the culture of buying and using handmade products.
What can we find in your assortment and what do you put the main emphasis on? I create urban fashion for women who flee from classics and love 12

COLEWOS, IVANA KLAPŠIĆ Colewos is a young Croatian fashion brand. Tell us more about it. Colewos clothing is designed for a modern woman with an attitude who loves classics and timeless style. For the woman who is not subject to seasonal trends. Our style follows functionality, comfort and practicality above all. It was created as a result of a long-standing love for fashion, which was developed over the years especially in the view of appreciation for the Scandinavian fashion style. What can we find in your assortment and what do you put the main emphasis on? The goal of the brand is to offer a timeless design of clothing, which is not created under the influence of trends, that is made of quality and natural materials and that is entirely produced in Croatia. When creating collections, I pay special attention to the selection of materials and functionality. Materials must be natural, eco or recycled. Clothing items must be functional and wearable in addition to the ones already in our wardrobe. We also make sure that the clothes are adaptable, even with minor changes in what is worn during the day but also for evening outings. How do you see the approach to fashion and design today? Where do you get your inspiration from and what does your brand bring us that’s different? I sincerely hope that the approach to fashion is slowly changing, from trendy "fast consuming" clothes to a greater focus and appreciation of clothes that are more durable and of better quality. Here in Croatia, women still pay a lot of attention to the 14
INSIGHTDESIGNGUIDE.COM
price, unfortunately not to the quality and long-term durability that clothing brings, which also often results in buying a cheaper piece. I hope that we will manage to change that over time. My brand goes exactly in that direction, the clothes are not the cheapest, but they are of good quality and long-term wearable. You don't need to worry that something bought from us won't be wearable and interesting next year, because it certainly will. I draw inspiration from my unconditional love for fashion. I am especially inspired by the Scandinavian approach that I had the opportunity to get to know. Loyalty of women to their local brands that I would like to see here going in a similar direction as well.

Zagreb has a vibrant and lively market culture. You can find farmers’ and flea markets all year around. Farmers’ markets are open every day and for most locals they serve as a great source of fresh meat, fish, veggies and fruits on a daily or weekly basis. Of course, markets are most crowded on Saturdays, which is the most usual day for visiting. Open daily from 6:30am to about 2pm except on National holidays. Besides Dolac, you should not miss Sunday’s weekly Antique fair at the British Square, as well as Hrelić, a massive flea market in Jakuševac situated on the outskirts of the city - where you can get literally anything.

Zagreb also offers interesting, small pop-up markets presenting various artists, designers and small manufacturers, giving them a chance to present their work to the wider audience. These markets are great venues to meet designers in person and support small manufacturers. Check our webpage for more info and prior announcements.
