GRINGOTTS WIZARDING BANK

Gringotts is the wizard’s bank set at the far end of Diagon Alley. The three-story building also contains many levels of subterranean vaults that are protected by elaborate locking devices. Gringotts is run by goblins who sit at raised desks among piles of ledgers, quills, and wizarding money. Before Harry can purchase his school supplies, he and Hagrid visit vault 687 at Gringotts to collect money from the Potter family vault. “Didn’t think your mum and dad would leave you with nothing, now did ya?” says Hagrid.

BANK ON IT

For Harry Potter and the

Sorcerer’s Stone, Gringotts was shot on location in London in a building called Australia House.

“Australia House has a very distinctive brand of marble in the building. We started with that as an idea and just had fun with it,” explains Stuart Craig. “We exaggerated the size of it, the weight of it, and we even exaggerated the shine of the marble.” He also liked the location’s tall columns, which made the goblins who work there appear even smaller.

WEASLEYS’ WIZARD WHEEZES In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Fred and George Weasley achieve their goal to open up their own joke shop: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. “They weren’t really cut out to be students,” says James Phelps, who plays Fred Weasley. “They were always practical jokers. Then they discover they could use this to their advantage financially as well as for entertainment. Now they’re in their element.” The Weasleys’ shop brightens the darkness that has descended upon the street.

GINGER UP

After the destruction of Diagon Alley, the shops were colored in shades of gray and black. Stuart Craig deliberately broke with this practice for the joke shop. “We made it as bright and less aged as anything else we’d done, so it would leap out at you.

It’s brash and extremely orange.”

Oliver Phelps, who plays George Weasley, says, “The whole shop is ginger, pretty much. Everything refers to the Weasleys with their bright ginger hair. That is brilliant.”

Breaking the Bank

Knuts, Sickles, and Galleons are the wizarding currency seen at Gringotts. The Knut is the least valuable coin—there are 29 Knuts in a Sickle and 17 Sickles in a Galleon—which means there are 493 Knuts to a Galleon!

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, a disguised Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to look for a Horcrux in one of the deepest vaults at Gringotts, which is guarded by the dragon they use to escape when they are caught. The dragon “smashes through the top of a cave hundreds of feet above, then through the banking hall and up through the glass roof. We could obviously not go back to Australia House,” says Stuart Craig.

Instead, Gringotts was re-created at Leavesden Studios.

To teach Jason to move like a gorilla, Notary outfitted the actor with his patented Quadrafit arm extensions. That made Liles’s arms longer than his legs—just like a gorilla. During three weeks of prep sessions in Los Angeles, Notary and Liles would run on all fours along mountain trails. “I was just following him, running around like a baby gorilla. It was the sorest I’ve ever been in my life,” admits Liles. Standing at six foot nine, Liles is physically taller than Johnson. “But he’s still much bigger than me.”

Liles chuckles. “It was fun to play opposite someone who is an alpha male himself.”

China comforted crying babies by feeding them a bottle of milk. Anjana picked up on that, and as soon as a cub started crying, Anjana fetched a bottle and set it out for China to use. Sometimes China put her finger in a cub’s mouth, like a pacifier. Anjana made an experiment by putting her own finger in a cub’s mouth. What a surprise when the cub used her finger like a pacifier, too.

Anjana was two and a half years old when television news reports alerted us that Hurricane Hanna would soon hit Myrtle Beach. The staff immediately spread out across the preserve, checking the habitats and making sure the animals had provisions for riding out the storm, however long it might last. China and Anjana were circulating around the grounds in China’s golf cart when they heard a tiny squealing from inside the tiger compound. When China and Anjana investigated, they found two baby white tiger cubs who had been born prematurely. The mother tiger had given birth early as a consequence of the dramatic shift in air pressure and her fear of the thunder and lightning.

China needed to get the cubs to a warm, dry place as quickly as possible. They also needed to be fed right away to calm them down. China’s house on the preserve served as the baby animal nursery, and it was the natural place to bring the newborn tiger cubs. When China went to retrieve the cubs stranded in the tiger 28

And you, Billy, you’re livin’ down in the basement.” That’s what old Cracknell would tell me at night as he sat on the cobbles because he was too drunk to go home. Then, just before collapsing, he’d add maliciously: “But don’t you worry, there’s one more level down below—you’ve still got the sewers beneath ya, kid . . .”

One day—I can’t have been more than five or six years old—the coppers questioned me because I was supposed to have been the last person to see old Cracknell alive.

He’d been found with a knife in his back, and the London Metropolitan Police experts were pretty sure that he couldn’t have done it by himself. So they interrogated me to see if I’d spotted anything unusual the previous night or the night before that. Anyway, Cracknell or not, they didn’t really care about the East End very much.

Half an hour later, the case was closed.

After that, I had no one else to listen to at night as I waited for Mum to get back from work. My mother’s up in heaven now. Her name was Molly Fletcher. Fletcher was her maiden name, and I’ve got the same name because London’s full of children who never knew their fathers. Mum would spend her nights walking the pavements of Whitechapel and Spitalfields, waiting for customers. When she’d come back late at night or early in the morning, I’d pretend to be asleep and hear her praying for God to give us a chance someday . . . She used to split the world into two categories: the lucky ones and the others . . .

One of her colleagues took a shine to me. She told me how my story began and what caused all our woes . . . In the beginning, Mum worked as a maid for some toffs, living in their attic and eating in the butlery. She was barely twenty and had been working hard ever since she was little.

But everything was fine until, one day, the son of the house, a dandy who studied at Cambridge, started to hang around her. Mum knew what he was up to, but what could she do to avoid his roving hands when their owner could have had her sacked in a flash? Like they say, whatever will be will be . . . and Molly Fletcher ended up pregnant—with me. As soon as her tummy started to swell, the toffs threw her out. There was no room for hussies under their roof, they told her.

Dismissed without wages or references, and with

a baby on the way—in other words, she had no hope of finding another job. That’s how she wound up on the streets of Whitechapel, and that’s where I was born.

She lived with me in a hovel at the back of a courtyard, along with some other girls who worked in the same trade. My mother was a simple woman, but she had plenty of common sense and willpower. She got it into her head that educated people did better than the rest and, as soon as I was old enough, she made me go to the charity school for needy children in Burley Street: a deadly boring place run by a pastor and some middle-class ladies with a passion for charity. But that’s where I learned to read and write, and that makes a man of you.

But when we live the life we lead, nothing lasts for long, apart from hardships. I wasn’t even nine years old when I found myself alone. My mother was carried off by a nasty case of angina. The doctors called it pneumonia, but I know it was the streets and all the rest that really killed her.

So then I had to get along all on my own without “turning out bad,” which is ever so hard if you end up orphaned in the East End. Toward the end, Mum had made me promise to become a “good person”. “You’ve got education, Billy Fletcher. You’d better make somethin’ outta yer life, or I’ll come back and give ya a right telling-off!” Now that she was gone, I fully intended not to disappoint her. I was convinced she was already watching me from up above . . .

I worked for a while as an errand boy for some local shopkeepers. Most of them were kind to me, in memory of Molly—“a lovely lass.” Also, not to brag, but I was a bit smarter than most of my friends and had a reputation for being an honest little chap, to boot. All in all, things were going fairly well, but I couldn’t see myself doing it for the rest of my life.

Back then, I was living in a little lean-to behind the shop of one of my employers—Mr. Smithers, the grocer. It wasn’t much, but it was home and it was quiet. I was just starting to get used to the comfort and safety when, one evening after I’d finished work for the day, I saw a lad who seemed to be waiting for me. He was older than me; I’d have said he was about twelve or thirteen. I didn’t like the way he was eyeing me up: staring as if he wondered whether I had the guts. I walked up to him, on the defensive, and he said “Hello!” with a crooked little grin. He introduced himself: “The name’s Wiggins, I’m sure you’ve heard of me . . .” When I said I hadn’t, he looked a bit upset but carried on: “Well, I’ve heard of you, Billy Fletcher. They say you’re a clever, straightforward lad, and I need a bloke who can read and write on my team . . .” When he mentioned his team, I guessed this Wiggins was in charge of some gang of thieves—like the kids in that book by Charles Dickens . . . Oliver Swift, or whatever it was.

I answered that I wasn’t interested, that I already had an honest job, and that I didn’t want any trouble.

“You’re missing the point!” guffawed Wiggins, looking rather proud of himself. “I work for a gentleman—Mr. Holmes, the famous consulting detective. Why not come over to his place with me? He always likes to meet new recruits.

His gaff’s in Baker Street. Come on, I’ll explain the job along the way . . .”

At the time, I didn’t tell him that I’d never heard of this “Mr. Holmes” or that I had no idea what a “consulting detective” was. The only detectives I knew of were policemen, but since they aren’t gentlemen, he must have meant something else. Anyway, I didn’t need to question Wiggins: He was such a chatterbox that he told me all I wanted to know—a consulting detective was a bit like a private investigator but fancier. Mr. Holmes was the best consulting detective in all of London, since he was the only one and he’d invented the profession himself. When we arrived at 221B Baker Street, Wiggins had already filled me in about what Mr. Holmes called his “Irregulars”—street kids like us, who he’d send on missions to watch and follow people, and other similar odd jobs.

The landlady who opened the door glared at us before leading us to the best-scrubbed stairs I’d ever seen. Later, I learned that her name was Mrs. Hudson, and that she baked

the best cakes in the world, but all I could think of then was the music that was ringing out all over the house—it was a violin, but nothing like the fiddlers who played on the streets of the East End. “That’s classical music,” said Wiggins, knowingly. “Mr. Holmes knows tons of things about music, tobacco, and chemistry. Don’t even try to understand. I haven’t told him anything about you, but you’ll see . . . he’ll size you up in no time. You’ve never met a man like him.”

I wasn’t really sure what he meant. We entered a lounge filled with clutter the like of which I’d never seen: papers strewn everywhere, books lying on the floor, a slew of snuffboxes, and even a hat with a wig draped on an armchair. But I was looking at the violinist. I’d never seen anyone like him before. He raised his bow and looked me up and down for a few seconds, then began rummaging through his files, seemingly engrossed, as if Wiggins and I weren’t there. Then, without lifting his eyes from his papers, he began to speak. That conversation would change my life, and I remember every word—it’s imprinted in my memory, as they say: “What is your name?”

“William Fletcher, sir, but everyone calls me Billy, and I—” “Not another word, Billy Fletcher! I see that you are an educated errand boy who wishes to lead an honest existence . . . and that you have recently had the misfortune to lose your mother. Please accept my condolences . . .”

At the time, I thought he meant “I know”, not “I see”. I thought Wiggins was lying and he’d already told him all about me, but the violinist continued: “The art of observation, Master Fletcher! Your poor shoes are clearly worn out by the London cobbles, but in such a way that suggests running rather than walking . . . And since your face is reasonably well-washed, I deduce that you do not spend your time running away from people, but in order to make an honest living. As to the ink-stains on your fingers, they obviously betray that you have been reading a newspaper . . .”

I was flabbergasted, but Wiggins was grinning again, and I must say I found it all a little irritating.

“What about my mother?” I asked, a little less confidently than I intended. “How did you know?”

“There is a small piece of black ribbon attached to your jacket collar. The material and dimensions clearly indicate that it came from a lady’s bonnet . . .”

I wanted to say something, but couldn’t. I saw a vision of my mother, who seemed to be telling me to become a good person. Mr. Holmes looked at me again, but differently this time, as if he’d guessed what I was thinking about. Wiggins was right: I’d never met a man like him.

“When do I start?” I heard myself ask aloud.

“Why not after the tea and scones that the delightful Mrs. Hudson will bring us in approximately two minutes?” replied Mr. Holmes, putting away his violin.

The rest, as they say, is history...

Billy Real name: William Fletcher. Billy considers himself the intellectual of the group. He can read and write, speaks fluently, and sees detective work as his vocation. His admiration for Mr. Holmes knows no bounds. He regards him as his mentor and probably the father that he never knew. He keeps a careful collection of all the newspaper cuttings he can find about his role model.

Like all the Baker Street Irregulars, Billy had a difficult childhood, fraught with drama and tribulations. We learn a few details in The Rabúkin Case, when he goes to old Sally’s funeral with his friends . . . But to discover his full story, see page 14.

Watson Not to be confused with the other Watson, he is a cat who shares the same name as the doctor! Found and adopted by Charlie during The Blue Curtain Affair, this alley cat proves to be a faithful and clever companion, even if—like all cats—his curiosity sometimes lands him in trouble. To Tom and Billy, Watson is just Charlie’s cat. It must be a girly thing, they think, agreeing on something for once . . . But, like Charlie, we know that Watson is the indispensable fourth member of the quartet, without whom The Baker Street Four could not exist!

Black Tom Black Tom, alias Tommy O’Rourke, is the hothead and daredevil of the gang. He is a first-class cat burglar, blessed with exceptional agility, and is always willing to play the acrobat over the rooftops of London. Coming from an Irish background, Tom often faces prejudice from many English people, who see the Irish as nothing more than a barely civilized bunch of rabble. Tom had tough beginnings, tossed back and forth between his cousins in Kilburn (whom we finally meet in The Orphans of London) and the “court of miracles” belonging to Patch, the king of London’s beggars (see The Blue Curtain Affair). Charlie Charlie’s real name is Charlotte because she is a girl, unbeknownst to most people she meets in the street. Even Billy didn’t notice at the start. So why does she disguise herself as a boy? To be left alone, but also quite simply because she’s a tomboy. She is not at all hot-headed, however, and is much calmer than Black Tom and at least as smart as Billy. She often intermediates when “clever clogs” and “the Irishman” are at loggerheads. Like her two friends, life has been rough on Charlie. In The Stepney Nightingale, we meet her mother, who has been committed to the terrible Bedlam asylum. To read her full story, see page 50.

We are about to embark on our drawing journey here, so let’s do just a few more warm-ups! I am going to write another word, and then you draw all the things that word makes you think of. Are you ready? Here we go. The word is . . . BALL.

The list exercise! I love making lists before I start drawing to help my brain loosen up. Want to try it? I’ll say a word, and you just write things the word reminds you of. Could be absolutely anything. They don’t even have to relate to the original word! This is just to get your mind thinking and working properly! It is sometimes called free writing or brainstorming. No wrong answers here!

What about erasers? There are no mistakes in this book! Only fun experiments. So if something doesn’t look like you wanted, turn it into something new or draw something else, but try to not use erasers!

FLASHWING No one really knows where Flashwing came from, but most people agree she’s one of the most beautiful creatures who ever lived. No one believes this more than Flashwing herself, and she can usually be found hogging the limelight and trying to make herself the center of attention.
