Following the federal raids on the residences of rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in Miami and New York, the hip-hop community remains shocked by the barrage of disturbing revelations surrounding the music icon. The raids believed to be the culmination of a protracted investigation prompted by a lawsuit filed by Combs’ former protege, Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, have brought to light a troubling pattern of alleged sexual misconduct and abuse.
“This is 100 percent about Cassie’s lawsuit,” a well-connected individual in the hip-hop community told the Informer. “Cassie’s lawsuit wasn’t just about Cassie being victimized, which she was. Cassie’s lawsuit gave the police a case with solid, irrefutable evidence.” Ventura’s lawsuit, which some reports suggested Combs settled for a jawdropping $100 million, initially drew attention to what some industry insiders described as “crimes” committed by Combs. The Ventura lawsuit exposed Combs as a serial abuser who paid men for so-called “freak-offs,” including directing them to assault Ventura sexually. The lawsuit also detailed other forms of violence that sources said immediately caught the attention of law enforcement.
“When this got out, the blowing up cars, the guns stuff, police called Cassie’s people because they hadn’t heard anything credible about Puff until then,” the source said. “They told Cassie’s lawyers in no uncertain
terms that they were going to act. Naturally, they did their due diligence and here we are. Puff kids in cuffs, he’s on the run, and his pretty much the modern-day O.J. [Simpson].”
While Combs hasn’t been arrested, media members tracked his private plane to Antigua and other island destinations that reportedly have no extradition treaties with the United States. After the raids, a TMZ journalist spotted Combs being detained briefly by federal authorities at an airport in Miami. Part of Ventura’s claims included, “In February 2012 … Mr. Combs told Ms. Ventura that he was going to blow up Kid Cudi’s car and that he wanted to ensure that Kid Cudi was home with his friends when it happened.
“Around that time, Kid Cudi’s car exploded in his driveway. Ms. Ventura was terrified as she began fully comprehending what Mr. Combs was willing and able to do to those, he believed had slighted him.” Cudi later confirmed the story to the New York Times. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the investigation encompasses various potential crimes, including sex trafficking and firearms. Since Ventura’s lawsuit, numerous other accusers have made similar allegations against Combs, spanning decades. Lawsuits have detailed alleged coercion, rape, and other forms of abuse by the Bad Boy Records founder. Despite Combs’ vehement denials, mounting legal battles and public scrutiny prompted him to step down as chairman of his cable television network, Revolt. Combs’ online marketplace, Empower Global, highlighting Black-owned brands, remains active but currently displays
no available products. Earlier this year, Combs opted to retract a lawsuit he had filed against Diageo, a settlement reached with the London-based spirits giant. In his lawsuit, he alleged Diageo failed to fulfill promised investments in Cîroc vodka and DeLeon tequila, which he had endorsed. Combs asserted that Diageo treated these brands as inferior “urban” products and leveled unfounded accusations of racism against the company’s leadership.
According to court
documents, Combs alleged that Diageo executives cited race as a factor in restricting distribution to predominantly “urban” neighborhoods. Further, he claimed that some leaders within Diageo harbored resentment towards him for his financial success. Diageo countered Combs’ claims in response, denouncing them as “false and reckless” attempts to extort additional funds from the company. Despite the legal dispute, Combs’ reputation suffered a significant blow,
mainly after initiating the lawsuit. Subsequently, Diageo assumed full ownership of Cîroc and DeLeon following the lawsuit’s withdrawal. After the raids on his homes where authorities handcuffed and temporarily detained two of his children, criticism of Combs intensified. Renowned artists like 50 Cent and former Bad Boy rapper Ma$e publicly condemned his behavior, while resurfaced interviews with superstar Usher have added fuel to the fire.
Usher’s chilling testimony of his time at what he described as “Puff Flavor Camp” painted a vivid picture of the disturbing atmosphere surrounding Combs. “I got a chance to see some things … I don’t know if I could indulge and even understand what I was looking at,” Usher recounted in a resurfaced 2016 interview with Howard Stern. Asked whether he would send his kids to “Puffy Flavor Camp,” Usher exclaimed: “Hell no!”

and city governments anticipate and manage these disruptions.
How do agencies plan for disruptions like this?
Planning is a central mission for state and metropolitan transportation agencies.
Shorter-term planning is about ensuring mobility and safety during service disruptions. These events can include construction, major scheduled events like music festivals, traffic incidents such as crashes and hazardous material spills, emergency evacuations, and events like the bridge collapse in Baltimore.
Agencies have limited resources, so they typically set priorities based on how likely a given scenario is, its potential adverse effects and the countermeasures that officials have available.
For bridges, the Federal Highway Administration sets standards and requires states to carry out periodic inspections. In addition, agencies develop a detouring plan for each bridge in case of a structural failure or service disruption. In Baltimore, Key Bridge traffic will be routed through two tunnels that pass under the harbor, but trucks carrying hazardous materials will have to take longer detours. Major bridges, such as those at Mississippi River crossings, are crucial to the nation’s economy and security. They require significant planning, commitment and coordination between multiple agencies. There usually are multiple contingency plans in place to deal with immediate traffic control, incident response and field operations during longer-term bridge repair or

reconstruction projects.
What are some major challenges of rerouting traffic?
Bridges are potential choke points in highway networks. When a bridge fails, traffic immediately stops and begins to flow elsewhere, even without a formal detouring plan. Transportation agencies need to build or find excess capacity before a bridge fails, so that the disrupted traffic has alternative routes. This is usually manageable in major urban areas that have many parallel routes and bridges and built-in redundancy in their road networks. But for rural areas, failure of a major bridge can mean extra hours or even days of travel. When traffic has to be rerouted off an interstate highway, it can cause safety and access problems. If large trucks are diverted to local streets that were not designed for such vehicles, they may get stuck on railroad tracks or in spaces too small for them to turn around. Heavy trucks can damage roads and bridges with low weight limits, and tall trucks may be too large to fit through low-clearance underpasses.
Successful rerouting requires a lot of coordination between agencies and jurisdictions. They may have to adjust road signal timing to deal with extra cars and changed traffic patterns. Local drivers may need to be directed away from these alternative routes to prevent major congestion.
It’s also important to
communicate with navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze, which every driver has access to. Route choices that speed up individual trips may cause serious congestion if everyone decides to take
earthquake. While traffic is disrupted, motorists change their commute patterns or may even switch to other modes, such as buses or commuter rail.
But after repairs are completed, even if some commuters don’t return to their old routes, new traffic soon will take advantage of the restored capacity. In the end, it’s hard to tell just by looking at usage whether commuters have changed their travel patterns permanently.
Will money from the 2021 infrastructure bill reduce the risk of these kinds of events?
Unfortunately, things do fall apart. U.S. infrastructure has been deteriorating for
in a rural area, public transit probably won’t have much of a role.
It’s also important to note that public transit services are for moving people. Freight shipments, which rely on trucks and other specialized vehicles, also need to get through or around disrupted zones. This often requires large commercial trucks either to use nearby local streets that weren’t designed for such big, heavy vehicles, or to make long-distance detours. That increases delays, pollution, safety risks and transportation costs that will eventually be passed on to consumers.

A container ship rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore around 1:30 a.m. on March 26, 2024, causing a portion of the bridge to collapse into Baltimore Harbor. Officials called the event a mass casualty and were searching for people in the waters of the busy port. This event occurred less than a year after a portion of Interstate 95 collapsed in north Philadelphia during a truck fire. That disaster was initially expected to snarl traffic for months, but a temporary sixlane roadway was constructed in 12 days to serve motorists while a permanent overpass was rebuilt. Some repairs take months, such as the 2022 crack in the I-40 Hernando De Soto Bridge across the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee. Others can stretch over years, such as the 2007 collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. use of various transit services and creatively adjusting bus lines could address some local travel needs, such as daily commutes and school and shopping trips. But local public transit services struggle to fill longerdistance gaps that extend beyond their service areas. In major urban areas like Philadelphia that have large populations and have invested a lot in their transit systems, public transit could carry as much as 25% of daily commute trips. Metro and commuter rail services in Chicago, typically have exclusive rights of way, which let them travel at higher speed than buses on surface streets. In the heart of Minneapolis, where artistry meets innovation, a singular figure stands as a testament to the transformative power of music.
Michael Cain, a luminary in the realm of jazz and a pioneer in music education, has orchestrated a symphony of change that reverberates far beyond the confines of convention. Today, as we delve into his captivating narrative, we uncover the genesis of Ekwe—a revolutionary endeavor aimed at democratizing music creation and celebrating cultural diversity.
In a candid interview with Al McFarlane on The Conversation with Al McFarlane, Cain shared insights into his personal life and his illustrious career. He revealed his passion for music education, citing his experiences at The Digital Playground and his commitment to providing access to music for all. Cain’s accolades as a musician, educator, and professor were highlighted, underscoring his Grammy nominations and his role as director of the Electronic Music and Recording Arts Program at the MacPhail Center for Music.
“I got very interested in providing music access to communities that were not getting those opportunities,” Cain shares, his words laden with the weight of experience. “We started a program in New Jersey called The Digital Playground...and

In the dynamic landscape of North Minneapolis, a transformative initiative is underway to reshape the community’s future. This ambitious endeavor, known as the Upper Harbor Terminal Project, has been the subject of intense scrutiny, debate, and anticipation. Recently, on the popular Conversations with Al McFarlane, live-stream and radio show, community leaders and stakeholders convened to discuss the project’s progress, challenges, and implications.
The conversation began with Bill English, a respected community leader, setting the stage by emphasizing the importance of community involvement in shaping the project’s trajectory. English highlighted the commitment of both public and private partners to prioritize the interests of North Minneapolis residents throughout the development process. He underscored the need for ongoing community engagement, stating, “We asked the city not to sell the land to the developer...but to lease it to them so that the community would always have input into what occurred there.”
In the ever-churning realm of global politics, few topics ignite as much discourse and contention as the intricate dynamics surrounding conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and Gaza. Recently, on “The Conversation with Al McFarlane,” esteemed guests Antonio Rosell, Yoji Senna, and Bob Amsterdam embarked on a profound exploration of these complexities. Their perspectives, enriched by historical context and keen analysis, offered profound insights into the underlying causes and extensive ramifications of these conflicts.
Champeau acknowledged the project’s dual objectives of economic viability and social responsibility, stating, “We stopped viewing it through the traditional lens...It became much more about community impact.”
However, amidst the optimism surrounding the project, funding challenges have emerged as a significant hurdle. English raised concerns about the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency’s (MHFA) decision not to allocate funding

to the project, particularly for affordable housing. English also expressed frustration with the lack of transparency in resource allocation, calling for greater accountability from decisionmakers. English emphasized the need for Commissioner Jennifer Ho to address the community’s concerns directly, stating, “We will be calling on her to come to some of these community meetings...she needs to do some public statements about why the Upper Harbor Terminal does not deserve their support.”
Commissioner Ho’s absence from the conversation raised questions about the level
of support and engagement from key stakeholders. While the project has garnered significant interest and investment from various quarters, the absence of crucial funding sources threatens to derail its progress. English’s remarks underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in decisionmaking processes, particularly concerning public funds earmarked for community development projects. Looking ahead, community members have an opportunity to voice their opinions and shape the
An overarching theme that reverberated throughout the discussion was the role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Eastern Europe, particularly its involvement in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Rosell’s incisive commentary shed light on NATO’s eastward expansion, highlighting the historical promises made to Russia and the resulting geopolitical tensions. “NATO has done the expansion toward the east that they promised they wouldn’t do,” Rosell emphasized, encapsulating the gravity of broken assurances. For those less familiar with NATO, understanding its origins and evolution is paramount. Established in 1949 as an intergovernmental military alliance, NATO emerged as a bulwark against the perceived threat of the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Over time, NATO’s membership expanded to encompass former Eastern Bloc nations, a development that elicited mixed reactions and heightened tensions with Russia.
Senna added another layer of complexity to the discourse by drawing parallels between historical colonialism and contemporary conflicts in the Middle East. His eloquence in articulating the impact of Western interventions on the region framed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within a broader narrative of imperialism and power dynamics. Senna’s resonant words echoed, “Israel is the same: instead of British colonizers, pilgrims, It’s the same European colonialism applied to the population of Palestine.” By adding this statement, Senna suggests that the actions of the Israeli state, predominantly led by Ashkenazi Jews of European descent, reflect a continuation of European colonialism in the Middle East. Senna implies that the historical legacy and identity of Ashkenazi Jews shape their position as agents of settler colonialism, impacting the trajectory of the

Title Insurance helps homeownership for Black Americans and others
now for The White House?
It is no secret that high interest rates and a low supply of affordable homes stand in the way of homeownership for low and middle-income families and people of color.
During the State of the Union, President Joe Biden spoke eloquently and passionately about one of the BidenHarris Administration’s key priorities: housing affordability. The President’s proposals included ideas that would boost housing supply and make homeownership more attainable for those that are currently being priced out of the market.
While the vast majority of President Biden’s new proposals would thoughtfully address some of the country’s most pressing issues, one idea that flew under the radar was a proposal about title insurance, a lesser known but vital part of the homebuying and refinancing process.
It was concerning to hear about the proposal – a new pilot program that would waive title insurance requirements for certain qualified homeowners – as one of the ideas being considered by the Administration to improve access to affordable housing.
Given that the program – which was previously abandoned by Fannie Mae last year – only applies to higherwealth individuals who are refinancing properties, should it be a top public policy priority
According to the National Association of Realtors, the gap between Black and White homeownership is worse than it was a decade ago, with the Black homeownership rate at 44.1% compared to the White homeownership rate of 72%.
The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) in its 2023 State of Housing in Black America reported that “In 2022, the Black homeownership stood at 45%, only modestly higher than the level at the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. This disparity between Blacks and Whites has expanded over the past half-century.”
Additionally, data from Zillow shows that only 7.8% of Black non-home owning families have enough income to pay a typical mortgage payment in their area without being cost burdened. This is where the focus should be – on building more homes for those who need them. We commend the Biden Administration for its work through the Housing Supply Action Plan to do just that. By increasing the supply of affordable housing of all types in our communities, we can expand access to the housing market to those in our communities that are currently shut out and ensure the dream of homeownership is truly
available all to Americans.
That is why, while well intentioned, the proposed title waiver pilot under consideration will cause unintended negative consequences in particular for African American, Latino American, and other communities of color across the nation. All communities should have access to fair housing opportunities and acquisitions. Often misunderstood, title insurance is a product that comprehensively protects homeowners’ property rights and their lenders’ financial interest in a property. It is vastly different than other types of insurance because it is a one-time fee and title professionals do the majority of the work upfront to both examine title issues and rectify any problems found.
That is why many homeowners thankfully don’t experience the challenge of a claim that threatens their homeownership – but if they do, title insurance is paramount to protecting their biggest investment.
Some may ask: why do I need to purchase title insurance when refinancing?
When refinancing, a homeowner purchases a new loan, and title issues can arise between the old loan and the new loan. For example, if a homeowner does not pay their contractor for repairs to their roof, there could be a lien against the property. Lenders need assurance that if a homeowner defaults on their mortgage, they have first lien priority.
That is why the proposal to waive title insurance
on refinancing is extremely risky. If a title issue arose, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would essentially turn into title insurers and would have to bear the risk of making lenders whole on those loans. These are the same companies that are under conservatorship due to their role in the 2008 financial crisis which cost taxpayers more than $200 billion and devastated minority communities by chasing profits for themselves. I don’t believe it is prudent to shift more risk to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, especially when the proposal at hand would not meaningfully address the nation’s housing affordability challenge. This is not a partisan issue, nor is it a new proposal. This same pilot program was withdrawn last year after members of Congress from both sides of the aisle and industry experts criticized the
idea. Ed DeMarco, Acting Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (the agency that oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) under President Obama, stated during a Congressional hearing last May, “It certainly is disturbing to think that Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac might displace title insurance by taking on this insurance itself.”
As the Administration continues to work towards improving housing affordability, first-time, low-income, and minority homebuyers should continue to be the focus. Waiving title insurance on a few refinancing transactions will not move the needle, and it could actually increase risk for little gain.
Homeownership is largest driver of wealth creation for all Americans. If we truly want to close the racial wealth gap, we must not only
ensure that homeownership is available to communities of color, but we must also ensure those homes are protected for generations to come.
I urge the Administration, therefore, to reconsider its focus on removing the critical protections provided by title insurance and continue to work on solutions that will truly address the availability and affordability of homes in all communities in America, and in particular for underserved communities.

Ways and Means Committee OKs proposed $512 million supplemental budget on party-line vote
By Mike Cook
Meeting more needs or fiscal irresponsibility is one way to sum up the differences among the two parties on a supplemental spending package a year after a $72 billion state budget became law.
Unveiled by Gov. Tim Walz and legislative leaders late Friday, the $512.5 million increase was approved Monday on a 17-9 party-line vote by the House Ways and Means Committee. More than $477.54
million of that amount has been agreed to, thereby leaving room in case additional needs arise.
The resolution keeps the budget reserve at $2.91 billion and the cash flow account is set at $350 million and permits no additional spending in the health care access or workforce development funds this biennium.
“As we all know, we had the main budget last year, so this is just a reflection of our ongoing priorities and needs for the state we see in our supplemental budget,” said Rep. Liz Olson (DFLDuluth), the committee chair.
The latest state budget forecast shows a projected $3.71 billion surplus at the end of the 2024-25 biennium, but a projected biennial surplus of $2.24 billion for the 2026-27 biennium.
Rep. Pat Garofalo (R-Farmington) noted that forecast — put together by Minnesota Management and Budget — shows $70.5 million in General Fund spending this biennium before the budget resolution is added, but $66.3 million in the ensuing two fiscal years. Based on the assumptions used, next year’s Legislature will need to reduce General Fund

Acknowledging the number of requests for additional spending, Olson said it is going to be some “heavy lifting” for committee chairs. “We all wish we could do more, but our hope is that this spending is done wisely and leaves our state in a good place for years to come but takes care of urgent needs.”
Garofalo asked if heavy lifting means “there’s so much you guys are spending that it’s hard to pick it up.” Could non-tax committees spend more than what’s in the resolution and offset that by raising fees or attaining other revenue to hit the target?

Tyler settlement
The largest price tag is $109 million for the Tyler Settlement, a class action lawsuit that was recently settled on the heels of a May 2023 U.S. Supreme Court case that found state law regarding property forfeiture was unconstitutional.
Via a 9-0 vote, the nation’s highest court ruled Hennepin County violated a homeowner’s constitutional rights when it sold her forfeited property for more than she owed in back taxes and fines and kept the $25,000 difference. State statute indicates the property was taken in the name of the state of Minnesota.
Two class action lawsuits have since been filed against the state on behalf of Minnesotans who lost property to tax forfeiture and counties kept the surplus money.
However, the settlement includes that the state will cover 80% of settlement costs and counties would reimburse the rest, meaning about $26.73 million will revert to state coffers in the 2026-27 biennium.

James Trice, CEO of the Public Policy Project, highlighted the importance of active participation, urging residents to attend the meeting and engage with the developer directly. Trice emphasized the significance of community input in shaping the project’s evolution, stating, “Come ready to hear what the developer has to say and make your comment...ask questions and make suggestions.”
Additionally, English provided insights into the scope of the project, highlighting its significance as the largest redevelopment effort in Minneapolis in years. He outlined key features, including an 8,000-seat amphitheater, 700 units of mixed-use housing, and a sustainable approach to affordability. English emphasized the project’s potential to not only benefit North Minneapolis but also serve as a destination for the broader community.
As for the anticipated completion date, during the conversation, McFarlane asked about the timeline, and Champeau estimated it to be closer to 2030.

This event will also coincide with the pinnacle of women’s college basketball, the Women’s Final Four in Cleveland, Ohio. For those unfamiliar, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the organizing body behind college sports events in the United States.
The Women’s Final Four is the culmination of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament, where the top four college teams compete for the national championship. It’s a momentous occasion in women’s sports, showcasing the talent and dedication of studentathletes from across the country.
In a recent conversation on The Conversation with Al McFarlane, Coach Leah provided a sneak peek into the lineup of this transformative event. She excitedly shared, “We’ve got Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) legends headlining our
panel discussion this year. We’re bringing in Semeka Randall to talk about recovering from injury and maintaining the right mindset.” Semeka Randall, a former WNBA player, promises to share invaluable insights into overcoming obstacles and achieving peak performance.
Another panelist, Vicki Hall, a WNBA legend and licensed financial advisor, will delve into financial literacy and goal setting. Coach Leah emphasized, “Her goal is not just financial literacy but truly understanding the goal setting behind understanding.” Vicki Hall’s expertise extends beyond the basketball court, providing attendees with practical advice for financial empowerment.
Tracy Henderson Edwards, a Minneapolis Northside native, will also join the panel discussion, discussing the champion mindset. Coach Leah expressed her anticipation, saying, “If she doesn’t know how to be a champion, I don’t know who does.” Tracy’s journey from aspiring athlete to inspiring leader is sure to resonate with attendees.
The conference will kick off with a coaches’ welcome reception on Thursday, April 4th, followed by the ultimate brunch and forum on Friday. Coach Leah highlighted the addition of breakout sessions, enhancing the interactive
experience for attendees. On Saturday, the conference will host a tipoff fashion show, promising a unique blend of style and substance. Coach Leah teased, “I’ll have a special guest joining us to talk about that next week.” The fashion show adds a

Use diabetes alert day to take action for a healthier you
Three out of four Minnesotans with prediabetes unaware they have it
Diabetes Alert Day, March 26, is a one-day “wake-up call” that focuses on the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of understanding your risk.
The Minnesota Department of Health is encouraging Minnesotans to take a minute to answer seven questions to find their risk of having prediabetes. It’s easy to know where you stand by visiting DoIHavePrediabetes. org (PodriaTenerPrediabetes. org in Spanish).
“Taking a minute to answer these questions
could be the best thing you do for your health all year,” said Teresa Ambroz, manager, and researcher with the MDH Diabetes Program. “With the right steps, you can reverse prediabetes before it becomes Type 2 diabetes. The first step is to find out whether you’re at risk, then connect with a health care provider to learn about treatment options, if needed.”
Prediabetes means a person’s blood sugar is higher than normal and puts them at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
More than 1 in 3 adults – about 98 million Americans – has prediabetes, and 3 out of 4 Minnesotans with prediabetes don’t know they have it.
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that affects how the body breaks down sugar. In time, it can contribute to other chronic conditions or lead to complications like chronic kidney disease, loss of vision or nerve damage.
Diabetes can be challenging, but there are support systems and resources to help people manage the disease.
Type 2 diabetes is preventable. Focusing on lifestyle changes like increasing physical activity, cutting back on unhealthy foods and sugary drinks, and losing weight can help reduce risk.
For those who qualify, help is available from the Diabetes Prevention Program. At the community level, raising awareness about the risks of diabetes is a key piece of the Minnesota’s Action Plan to Address Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke and Diabetes 2035 (MN 2035 Plan).
The plan lays out detailed
strategies and example actions for communities, health care organizations, community and organizational leaders, and people to save lives, reduce health disparities and improve health and well-being. You can learn more about innovative ways Minnesotans are helping reduce heart disease, stroke and diabetes in their communities by visiting the MN 2035 Plan YouTube playlist. For example, the Whitney Senior Center, an organization that supports the wellbeing of people 55 and older
in the greater St. Cloud area, is a recognized provider of the National Diabetes Prevention Program. The senior center has had success by teaming up with the Center for African Immigrants and Refugees Organization (CAIRO), a St. Cloud nonprofit that advocates for equitable social, health and economic opportunities for African refugees and immigrant children, youth, and families.

“I’m a woman, a mother, and a person of color. I use these identities to help me navigate patient care and understand how a patient’s identities affect their healing. In my work, it’s important for me to reaffirm the patient’s sense of self beyond their diagnosis.
Ultimately, my goal is to offer perspectives that encompass all facets of their identity. Drawing from my perspective as a person of color, I advocate for a broader understanding of diversity within the clinical team. I’m very vocal about the importance
of recognizing lived realities that may be different than our own. It’s all about opportunities to enrich our approach to care. It allows me to connect more deeply with my patients, and I believe it is essential to providing holistic traumainformed care.”

vaccine is safe for pregnant people The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Minnesota Department of Health strongly recommend that all people who are pregnant, recently pregnant, breastfeeding, and considering pregnancy get vaccinated for COVID-19. Pregnant people are at a higher risk of severe COVID-19 disease compared to non-pregnant people.
you are pregnant, get vaccinated to help protect you from severe illness from COVID-19. Studies continue to show that COVID-19 vaccines are safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Getting the COVID-19 vaccine can protect not just the pregnant person but also their newborn baby. Studies show that babies born to those who are vaccinated for COVID-19 during pregnancy had a lower risk of being hospitalized for COVID-19 in their first six months of life.
developing baby of a pregnant person who is sick with COVID-19 may also be at risk. There is an increased risk of preterm delivery, and there may be an increased risk for stillbirth for people who tested positive for COVID-19 while pregnant. Talk with your health care provider if you have questions. Already vaccinated for COVID-19? Make sure you’ve received at least one dose of the 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine to be up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines. COVID-19 vaccine is safe for people who want to have a baby one day. If you are trying to become pregnant now or want to get pregnant in the future, it is recommended that you get a COVID-19 vaccine. There is no evidence that fertility problems are a side effect of any COVID-19 vaccine. STRIVING TO SEE WORLD CHANGE
James Meredith, NashInspired & the Epicenter
By Terryann Nash, MAP Over the course of the past three years, I have had the honor of reviewing books by diverse authors in the African diaspora—books that inspire, inform, engage, entertain, empower, uplift, and encourage, to name a few. Unlike generations ago, there are more books out there, especially children’s books, with characters/people who look like us, and each unique voice shares a story.
Inclusion is key to moving forward, and that includes those of us who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Such are the stories in Terryann Nash’s anthology Striving to See World Change: James Meredith, Nashinspired and the Epicenter.
Nash is the founder of NashInspired, a company “that works to empower underrepresented community leaders who want to build and bridge their brand.” Her motto: I work every day in the community to create bridges between the Deaf and Hearing communities.” As an influencer, many of the values she holds dear were taught by her grandparents, William and Katherine Nash. William Nash, in fact, bought 55 acres of land back in the day, the only Black farmer in Minnesota owning land, defying the odds of racism and discrimination. One of the ways she has paid it forward is with her tireless service to and work with the Deaf community.
In her commitment to create change for those who are both Black and Deaf/Hard of Hearing, she and the authors in this anthology took a trip in 2021 to Mississippi to meet James Meredith, a civil rights leader and the first African
American to integrate the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1962. Each participant came away from that meeting with valuable knowledge and perspective of the systemic racism, discrimination, and the varied disparities that yet exist. To move forward, it is important to know your history.
The following brothas and sistahs in this anthology bring to you the reader their powerful and inspiring stories as influenced leaders:
Shayinnia McCoy, Mary Kay Cosmetics business owner and Deaf Minister
Rebecca Demmings, Community Educator, Executive Director of Diversity Alive!, ASL (Instructor, Consultant, and Specialist)
Jawaun Jackson, Presenter, Undoing Racism Conference, Diversity Alive!
Lasheria Murphy, ASL Interpreter, Handz Up Interpreting Services
Samuel Yeboah, Librarian, Ghana, Africa
Duane Johnson, Founder/CEO, DeafRYDE
Dennis Roberson, President, DeafRYDE Sharia Denise Stripling, Ms. Black Georgia, Ms. Black International Ambassador Pageant
Emmanuel Osei, Jr., Singer/Songwriter, Ghana, Africa
Kay Comeaux, Educational Specialist,
Paralegal, Orientation
Facilitator
Musa Darboe, Jr., Actor, Moviemaker One of the reference points Nash makes in the anthology is Langston Hughes’ poem, What Is A Dream Deferred? All too many of us have experienced the consequences of the first question, so now it’s time to defy the odds and go forward in success and economic equity. In reading the ways Nash’s writers influenced her, I also noted the parallels between Black, Deaf, and other marginalized communities who experience the systemic discrimination of a mentality that was laid down some 400 years ago. Those who stand at the intersectionalities of said communities remind us that what happens in one can happen in the others. Kudos to Nash for sharing the 10 Principles of Independent Living and her advice to young people. Striving to See World Change is available through Amazon and her website, www. NashInspired.com. Thank you, Terryann, for being a wonderful vehicle for your writers to share their stories and give us more understanding and insight to bridge the Deaf and Hearing communities. Again, world change is about inclusion, and if we don’t share our stories, who will?
