Buffalo Soldiers

Honorable discharges for 110 Buffalo soldiers convicted in aftermath of 1917 Houston riots By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia Army Secretary Christine Wormuth formally gave the green light to overturn the court-martial convictions of 110 Black soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, popularly known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The Army said in a news release that officials made the decision based on a suggestion from the Board for Correction of Military Records and to atone for the unfair treatment of soldiers after the 1917 Houston Riots. “After a thorough review, the Board has found that these Soldiers were wrongly treated because

of their race and were not given fair trials,” Secretary Wormuth stated. “By setting aside their convictions and granting honorable discharges, the Army is acknowledging past mistakes and setting the record straight.” The Houston Riots, which erupted on August 23, 1917, stemmed from racial tensions and provocations against members of the 24th Infantry Regiment. The catalyst for the riots was the violent arrest and assault of two Black Soldiers, leading to a group of 110 soldiers seizing weapons and marching into the city. Clashes ensued, resulting in 19 deaths. The subsequent trials of the soldiers were marred by irregularities, according to historians, culminating in the largest mass execution of

American Soldiers by the U.S. Army. The Army’s immediate regulatory change, prohibiting future executions without proper review, followed the initially secretive executions. The South Texas College of Law, in October 2020 and December 2021, petitioned the Army for a review of the court-martial. Retired general officers also submitted petitions requesting clemency for the soldiers. “We cannot change the past; however, this decision provides the Army and the American people an opportunity to learn from this difficult moment in our history,” Under Secretary of the Army, Gabe Camarillo, said in the release. At the Secretary’s request, the Army Board for Correction of Military Records meticulously reviewed

records related to the courtmartial cases, officials affirmed. The unanimous decision was that significant deficiencies permeated the proceedings, rendering them fundamentally unfair. The board recommended setting aside all convictions and characterizing the soldiers’ military service as “honorable.” Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Review Boards Michael Mahoney, overseeing the review, agreed with the decision. “With the support of our experts, our dedicated Board members looked at each record carefully and came up with our best advice to Army leaders to correct a miscarriage of justice,” Mahoney added. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said it actively supports family members

affected by the correction of records, helping upon receipt of the amended documents. “It is a long time coming, but it is justice that is finally achieved,” John Haymond, a historian, told the New York Times, which reported that the Army acted after it received a petition requesting clemency for the soldiers that had been written by Haymond and Dru BrennerBeck, a lawyer. The duo cited trial transcripts and other records to show that the soldiers had been denied due process and other basic rights. “This isn’t a political action. This is the Army internally fixing a problem that was the Army’s problem 106 years ago,” Haymond asserted. Family members of the 110 Soldiers may be entitled to benefits, and guidelines for

applying to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records can be found at https://arba. army.pentagon.mil/abcmr-app. html. Online applications can be submitted at https://arba. army.pentagon.mil/onlineapplication.html or through mail to Army Review Boards Agency (ARBA), 251 18th Street South, Suite 385, Arlington, VA 222023531. Applications should include documentation proving a relationship to one of the 110 formerly convicted Soldiers. Family members and interested parties can request a copy of the corrected records from the National Archives and Records Administration, following the NARA Archival Records Request procedures at https:// www.archives.gov/veterans/ military-service-records.

‘Nuff Respect: A Tribute to Master Storyteller and Griot Nothando Zulu and the Legacy of Love She Left to North Minneapolis and Beyond Culture and Education Editor

Build Wealth Master Class

David McGee’s roadmap to creating wealth legacies By Al McFarlane Editor Excerpts from remarks by David McGee, CEO and founder of BuildWealth, MN at The Black Men’s Legacy Summit II, October 28th at Regional Acceleration Center, 1256 Penn Avenue N., Minneapolis. Historically since the beginning of time, the number one way of building wealth is through owning land, owning land and houses. This is a quick exercise on how equity is built up and we how are missing out. We started 9,000 Equities to get 9,000 Black families into homes. The vast majority of people we work with are women. Love our women,

but Black men, we need to start owning some homes to build legacies too. We’re going to talk about how that’s done. I am talking about the power of equity. If you were to buy a home for $200,000, the value of homes go up on the average about 5% every year, period. Rain or shine. you don’t have to do anything to do it. The value of homes appreciates like that especially in a good neighborhood. When we started building some houses in North Minneapolis in 2016, the value of homes were going up actually 14% every year. Now, if you buy a $200,000 house in 2023, in 2024, that house would be worth $210,000, in 2025,

$220,000, 2026, in $231,000, in 2027, $243,000 and so on. By the fifth year, that house you bought for 200,000 will be now worth $255,000. If you had a loan against the house, let’s say you had a $194,000 loan. As you’re paying down your house each year, your loan is going down. Year one you’re at $191,000. By the time you get to year five, your loan is now down to $180,000. How do you figure out equity? The difference between the value of the house at $255,000 less the actual loan amount gives you a equity position of $74,000 without doing anything over five years. So, now you have this equity that you could use to buy another house, buy an apartment

building, send a child to school. There are many different things that you can do with that. How much does it cost for a two bedroom apartment? $1600 a month? There’s 60 months in five years. That’s the example I’m using. I’m taking $1600 times 60 months. It comes up to $96,000. If you were a renter over the same five years, you have paid $96,000 in rent. Question: How much equity would you walk away with after renting five years? Zero. None. Nada. You’re going to pay somebody’s mortgage. Either you’re going to pay yours or you’re going to pay someone else’s.

An Invocation: May the Orishas welcome Maé (Mother) Nothando into her relatives’ ancestral resting place and grant her respite, and a chance to share the stories of her people with all who will listen, griot that she was/is. Ashé It is rare to learn of a person whose very existence embodies love. But such is the case for Maé (Portuguese for Mother) Nothando. Nothando Zulu was the wife of Vusumuzi Zulu for 55 years, and mother of shared children Terrence Walker, Stephanie Dillard, Makeda Zulu, Keke Zulu, and David Dennis, 18 grandchildren and 17 grandchildren, according to her obituary. She also was also the spiritual mother and grandmother of the Northside community in Minneapolis, MN and beyond. According to the posted “In Memoriam,” …[h]er storytelling touched the lives of thousands, carrying the fire that was uniquely hers” (https://nzulu.com/). Though named Daisy Stephens at birth on December 3, 1944 in Southampton. VA, Nothando adopted her African name in the 1970s. There are

competing definitions of what Nothando means: Mother of Love, Zulu; Have Love,South Africa; God’s Love, Zambia— whichever you choose, without question, “LOVE” is at the center. This is who Nothando Zulu was and how she will be remembered. Her obituary closed with these words: Her mother’s love changed all who knew her for the better and we thank the Creator for allowing us to know His love through her.” And on her website, these words stand out: Black Queen, Mother of Love, and Farewell to the Black Queen Mother of Love, Nothando Zulu, as she takes her place among the ancestors. Visitation was held on Nov. 17, 2023, at Estes Funeral Chapel, 2201 Plymouth Avenue N., Minneapolis. And funeral was held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Chase Dent-Wells, 35, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, in Minneapolis. Chase was born and died in North Minneapolis, reflecting his prophetic, heartfelt declaration that he was “Northside Forever”. While he loved Minneapolis, he was well traveled, having spent time in Jamaica experiencing his AfroCuban/Jamaican roots, thanks to his grandfather, and in Norway, learning about Viking roots with his grandmother. Chase was a scholar at Harvest Prep Elementary School, attended Ascension Junior High School, and graduated from North Community High School. He lettered in his junior and senior years as a standout player on the celebrated North High Polars football team. He attended

Mankato State University. Chase excelled in mathematics and literature. He loved to debate everything. He questioned everything, with a joyful intensity that revealed appreciation for the power of words and language. He visited his music producer father, Anthony Dent, in Atlanta regularly from kindergarten on, which nurtured his passion for words and fueled his exploration of songwriting in the hip-hop genre. He was encouraged and inspired by his father’s pioneering work in the music industry. His Dad described Chase as a prolific lyricist, in his own right. Chase examined the grit and grind of the underworld street culture; he wrote about it in volumes of rap songs he authored.

By Irma McClaurin 3K' Culture & Education Editor Dear Reader, Back again, and here to tell you that African spiritualism (worship of traditional African spirit culture) is ever present and an integral part of everyday life in Brazil, especially for women who are viewed as keepers of these spirits. Beliefs in the power of the Orishas can be found in the cultural practices of the Terreiros, Candomblé, drumming, Capoeira, the playing of the berimbau (the main string instrument in Capoeira), cooking Acarajé by Baianas, and even contemporary Hip Hop music and among Hip Hop cultural practitioners. Honoring our promise to our Black Veterans By Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn The original government-issued posters publicizing the G.I. Bill of 1944 were designed to inspire. Oversized red and white letters urged, “Veterans — prepare for your future through EDUCATIONAL TRAINING. Consult your nearest Office of the VETERANS ADMINISTRATION.” Another read, “VETERANS — if buying a farm, home, or business, learn about GUARANTEED LOANS.” A third showed a young man with his hand on his chin, deep in thought, with the following text above: “Shall I go back to school?” What’s notable about these posters is that every person pictured is white. These posters sent a message to Black veterans that they need not apply — that these lifechanging programs were not meant for them. This message was reinforced by the blatant discrimination perpetrated by Veterans Affairs (VA) offices around the country and the abysmal benefits provided to veterans of color. In 1947, only two of more than 3,200 home loans administered by the VA

Legacy Summit From 3 This is power of equity. I waited until I was 38 years old to own my first home. 38 years old. My wife, and I rented for 13 years for almost $1,300 a month for 13 years. Do the math. They put us out because they wanted to recycle the apartment into a town home. They wanted us to get out so they can go in there and redo carpet and then rent it to someone else. the

in Mississippi cities went to Black borrowers. Similarly, less than 1% of VA mortgages went to Black borrowers in New York and New Jersey suburbs. These disparities in homeownership opportunities have grown with time. The Consumer Federation of America estimates that homeownership rates for white and Black Americans stood at 74.50% and 44.10% respectively in 2020, and 65% and 38% in 1960. This homeownership disparity helps explain the difference in net worth for white families ($171,000) compared to that of Black families ($17,150). After signing the G.I. Bill into law in June 1944, President Truman remarked that it would give “emphatic notice to the men and women in our armed forces that the American people do not intend to let them down.” Nearly 80 years later, I’ve teamed up with Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-06) and U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) to ensure President Truman’s words ring true. We have reintroduced Sgt. Isaac Woodard, Jr. and Sgt. Joseph H. Maddox G.I. Bill Restoration Act in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S.

Senate. It would provide critical housing and education benefits to Black World War II veterans and their descendants, honoring our long overdue promise to the nation’s heroes. It would also require that the Government Accountability Office establish a panel of independent experts to assess inequities in how benefits are distributed to minority and female service members. The bill’s name pays homage to two admirable and unsung World War II veterans. In February 1946, decorated World War II veteran Sgt. Isaac Woodard, Jr. was traveling home on a Greyhound bus to Winnsboro, South Carolina when a local police chief forcibly removed him from the bus. Still in his uniform after being honorably discharged, the officer beat him mercilessly. Woodard was cruelly thrown in jail rather than given the necessary medical treatment, leading to his blindness. The police chief was ultimately acquitted of the crime by an all-white jury. President Truman was so moved by Sgt. Woodard’s horrific abuse that he signed an Executive Order integrating the armed services. Sgt. Joseph Maddox, another World War II veteran, applied and was accepted to

We walked away with how much? Zero. We walked away with zero. If we could afford a $1,300 payment at that time, rates were at a place where we would’ve had a $200,000 house. That’s about what it cost at that time for a $200,000 mortgage. I’ve been a banker for 40 years and there’s never been an opportunity like the one that has come into play recently. Thanks to the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, you can buy an apartment building with as little as 5% down. That’s never happened. That’s just a miracle.

If you try to buy a fourplex, you need 25% down. If it’s a $400,000 home fourplex, you had to put down a hundred thousand dollars. But if I bought a million-dollar apartment building under this, I can get it for $50,000 down. Somebody will say, “I ain’t got no $50,000.” I didn’t have $50,000. So you know what I did? I got all my kids to pool money. We started a LLC and I encouraged them bring $10,000 each to the table. We raised $90,000 to start getting involved in buying apartment buildings.

Donald Baker

Official portrait of U.S. Rep Jim Clyburn a master’s degree program at Harvard University. His local Veterans Affairs office denied him the tuition assistance he was rightfully due under the G.I. Bill to “avoid setting a precedent.” After seeking assistance from the NAACP, the VA in Washington, D.C., ultimately promised to get Sgt. Maddox the educational benefits he deserved.

These are just two of the countless servicemembers who were treated unfairly after sacrificing on behalf of their country. Black soldiers returning home from World War II found themselves facing the same socioeconomic and racial discrimination they had faced before. Instead of being welcomed with open arms,

they struggled to find jobs, get educated, and purchase homes. We cannot undo the injustices of our past. But we can begin to restore the possibility of full economic mobility for those that the original G.I. Bill left behind. The G.I. Bill Restoration Act would bring us one step closer to that goal.

So, this is not a thing that you can’t do. You may not have all the money yourself, but that’s McDonald’s money. If you look at it, most of us spend more than $10,000 a year on fast foods, so it isn’t like you don’t have it. I want to show you the same situation with a multiunit apartment building. If you bought a $2 million apartment building, there’s a program in the city of Minneapolis where they’ll give you up to $35,000 for every door as long as you’re going to service people whose incomes are $54,000 a year or less, which is most

of us who are in apartments. Under the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund program, we only need $100,000 down to buy a $2 million apartment building. Buy for $2 million. There’s going to be some fees associated with that, but look how the value of the property goes up…. so that by the end of the fifth year, you’re sitting on $431,000 in equity. If you had a Greater Minnesota Housing Funds loan, at the end of five years, the property value is $2.4 million minus what you owe, In five years, you’d have

$960,000 in equity for you to build a legacy for your family. If you are 34, for instance, by 39 you could have a million dollars built up to build up a legacy for your children. This is real. This is not a hocus pocus. This is real stuff. I helped this gentleman who’s here today. He’s done it. He’s got 40 units of apartments already. He just started two years ago and I think he’s getting ready to close on another one. So, he may have three apartment buildings with 60 units. He’s started two years ago and he’s already here. Continued next week.

My Mommy is a Schoolteacher Sharing Our Stories

By: W.D. Foster-Graham Book Review Editor MY MOMMY IS A SCHOOLTEACHER By Nasra Noor One of the biggest changes in children’s books since I was a child is the increase in diversity. With many new avenues to publishing, we are seeing modern families and ethnic and cultural diversity represented, where more children can see themselves and their unique family dynamics in said books. Though the publishing process may take longer for a children’s book, the end result is well worth it. That being said, I bring to you Nasra Noor’s My Mommy is a Schoolteacher, wonderfully illustrated by Victoria Medi. Our story opens with a young Somali girl describing her home life, in particular her Hooyo (mother). She shares the

many ways Hooyo takes cares of her and her sisters; most important, she always lets them know they are “her greatest treasure and her complete joy.” In addition, Hooyo attends graduate school in the evening in order to get her degree. While Hooyo is at school, her Aabo (father) tells them stories and tucks them in at night. The big day comes when all Hooyo’s hard work pays off and she graduates, to the joy of her family, and her daughter thinks of all the wonderful qualities Hooyo possesses. Her success as a schoolteacher is inspiring and empowering to her daughter: “If Mom can do it all, so can I,” and she speaks with love and great pride about Hooyo. This book speaks beautifully about Somali culture, Islam, and a loving family. Through the daughter’s point of view, we see that Hooyo is a devoted mother and still achieves her personal dreams, with the unwavering support of her family. I had the honor of meeting Ms. Noor at the Minnesota Black Authors Expo last month. She has an energy

and passion for her work and pride in her culture that draws you in with a desire to learn more. When I finished reading her book, I was smiling from ear to ear. As a second-grade teacher with four daughters, Noor not only writes about her dream; she lives it every day. My Mommy is a Schoolteacher is available through Diverse Voices Press, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, the Minnesota Black Authors Expo website (www. mnblackauthorsexpo.com) and her personal website (www. authornasranoor.com). Thank you, Nasra, for creating such an amazing book. May it find a “happy place” in many, many homes.
