Like Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul, parts of North Minneapolis’ historic Black community were bulldozed and paved over to provide express access to downtown for suburban commuters.
The historic Black communities, ironically, were products of restrictive racial covenants that institutionalized race-based discrimination against Black people, and

Rep. Karen Bass proclaimed first Black female Mayor of Los Angeles
By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
When Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) announced her candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles last year, she knew the race wouldn’t be easy.
But the former Congressional Black Caucus Chair also believed that her beloved city faced a crisis, and that others that had (or were likely to) declare their candidacy, probably wouldn’t live up to the challenge.
for the soul of our city,” declared Bass, who counted among those on President Joe Biden’s short candidate list for the vice presidency that ultimately went to fellowCBC alum Kamala Harris.
“We are going to build a new Los Angeles,” she said. With extensive experience in Congress and as a California Assembly leader, Bass said she understands the fight ahead. After all, she emerged from an intense battle in which her opponent spent more than $100 million.
Revival Training focuses on the three major elements of a person’s well-being: mind, body, and soul. With the unprecedented and painful events of the past two and a half years, what better time than now to breathe a sigh of relief for another day, victory days of hope and bringing peace back into our lives.
Lucienne Olson, owner of Revival Training says most of our mental, physical, and social health has been jolted. So finding better ways to be a better self is more important today than ever before. We are reminded that we did survive.
Revival is a full-scale health and wellness company offering personal training, coaching, and on-line services.
Emphasis choices for people of all ages and diverse backgrounds might include teaching people how to eat, how to move, and empowering them to make those decisions for themselves. “We were running full-scale, seven
days a week, and then COVID hit, and our services abruptly stopped. I was concerned because I knew we all needed to optimize our wellness if we were to fight off this viral pandemic.”
A well-deserved
“I’ve spent my entire life bringing groups of people together in coalitions to solve complex problems and produce concrete change – especially in times of crisis,” Bass declared in September 2021.
“Los Angeles is my home. With my whole heart, I’m ready. Let’s do this – together.”
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, more than a week after voting closed in the City of Angels, Bass was declared the winner in a tight race that pitted her against billionaire developer Rick Caruso.
With her victory, Bass will become the first Black woman to lead the city during a time when Los Angeles faces an ever-growing homeless crisis and a myriad of other issues left behind by her predecessor Eric Garcetti.
“We are in a fight
Projections had Bass winning more than 53% of the vote to Caruso’s 47%. The Associated Press said Bass enjoyed the advantage of being a lifelong Democrat “in a city where Republicans are almost invisible.”
Last week, Vice President Harris campaigned in Los Angeles with Bass, and many high-profile Democrats backed her candidacy. The news service noted that Bass would become the first woman and second Black person to hold the job after former Mayor Tom Bradley held the post from 1973 to 1993. She’ll also attempt to cool the figurative fires that have been stoked internally among city leaders, including a racial scandal that’s rocked City Council. Further, the city has

The general elections held recently in Brazil chose the president who will lead the largest country in South
America. Brazil is one of the most important economies on the planet and it is linked to the Bric group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), a group that represents a balance in world geopolitics.
Former Brazilian president (2003-2010) and union leader Ignacio Lula Da Silva,
led in the first electoral round, on October 2 by a very small percentage over the current president, presidential candidate and ex-soldier, Jair Bolsanaro.
Lula won by a slim margin in the October 30, second round of elections.
Bolsanaro desperately deployed his electoral
machinery hoping not to lose these elections that will mark a significant change, not only in Brazil, but in Latin America.
The Unified Black Movement and the Afrodescendant wing of the Workers’ Party (PT) intensified their work with mobilizations and house to house canvassing in key
cities such as Sao Pablo, Bahias de Todos Los Santos, Minas de Gerais, Maranhao, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, where the Afro-descendant vote is decisive according to Gilberto Leal, leader of CONEN (Collective of Black Entities of Brazil) and member of the Afro-descendant Collective of

Bivalent boosters and safer holidays
The updated COVID-19 booster provides the best level of protection against severe cases of COVID-19. Everyone age 5 and older should get an updated booster when eligible.
This booster was made to fight strains of COVID-19 that are more commonly circulating through our communities right now (Omicron BA.4 and BA.5). Previous shots were effective for fighting serious illness and hospitalization against the original strain of COVID-19, but they were not specifically targeted to the strains we face today.
We also know that the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines against serious illness and hospitalizations decreases over time. If you have not had a booster recently – it is important that you prioritize getting an updated booster as you may not be well protected by vaccines whose effectiveness has decreased.
COVID-19 vaccines,
including the updated boosters, are safe. They help protect people from getting very sick and may decrease the risk of long-term complications from COVID-19.
As we approach the holidays, it is more important than ever that you are up to date on your COVID-19 vaccinations to keep yourself, your family and your communities safe from severe illness or hospitalization from COVID-19.
It is easy and free to get your updated COVID-19 booster. Learn more about where to get this updated vaccine at Find COVID-19 Vaccine Locations (https://mn.gov/ covid19/vaccine/find-vaccine/ locations/index.jsp).
Many of us will be gathering with family and friends during the upcoming holidays. With many respiratory diseases spreading right now, including flu, RSV, and COVID-19, it is important to take steps to help everyone celebrate safer!
Here are some things
you can do:
o Make sure you and your family are up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines and have received your annual flu vaccine. You can get both vaccines at the same visit.
Find COVID-19 and flu vaccine locations near you at vaccines.gov. Many locations, such as pharmacies, may have both vaccines, so you can ask about getting both shots at the same time.
o Stay home if you are feeling sick. No one wants to miss out on the celebration, but it is important to stay home so others do not get sick.
o Wash your hands often.
o Check the CDC COVID-19 community level before you go so you can follow appropriate public health recommendations, such as when to wear a mask. You can also wear a mask at any time, no matter what the community level is. The CDC provides an easy way to check levels by

“Comcast Rise came at the most valuable time,” Olson said in gratitude. “Now that COVID has kind of settled a little bit, the online presence is still of importance. The visibility, the marketing, the network and tools to work within that network that have come with this grant have been phenomenal and are going to absolutely take my business to the next level”.
Olson is absolutely stunning without a stitch of make-up. She told her inspiring story with such an honest, often sad, yet confident delivery. She was interviewed on last Wednesday edition of The Conversation with Al McFarlane, a daily webcast sponsored in part by Comcast Cable.
Olson was proud to say she had three great mentors whose careers influenced her to eventually explore this concept of mind, body, and soul leading her into the wellness arena. “My grandma is a psychologist, my grandfather was a scientist, and my mother is an acupuncturist, a Chinese medicine alternative. I believe these three disciplines have allowed me to approach health the way I do. Lots of high energy!”
There was also a little self-celebratory note, as well, and rightfully so. Thanks to her oldest daughter, born when she was 16, Olson admits she would not have made it without her. She managed to muster enough will and determination to fight

for survival while often facing discriminatory and personal uphill battles. She held on to her dreams for success while basking in the joys of motherhood.
“Yoga first helped me to connect the three principles of mind, body, and soul, and to escape from the juvenile justice system that was the consequence of a traumatic childhood. I started to harness my aggressions. I wasn’t a student athlete but somehow found myself studying to be a personal trainer and becoming a competitive body builder and strongman competitor. These personal leaps helped me to really navigate and find meaning, and credibility in my professional endeavors.” When asked how interested parties would make choices to get back into a routine of weight control, especially now that the holidays are upon us, Olson offers a few suggestions.
“I think the whole goal of life is finding and then knowing yourself. It won’t always be comfortable. Meditation can help. What you’re doing is coming back with a clear mind and just being open. We have private coaching and workshops to help a potential client get started. My team and I really do have innovative ways to help them test the waters. I think the number one predictor is your environment, the people who are around you. Accountability is about love, and you have to tell someone what you’re trying to do. Determine what showing up looks like. Non-negotiables include hydration, protein, and fiber. What you don’t do is cut back on other meals during the day to save up the hunger for the big feast!” In other words, enjoy the holidays in a healthy, sensible, yet delectable manner!
“I provide the tools and education, and, encourage my clients to make different decisions in their day-to-day life. I support that mindset shift that comes along with the training. We also work with youth in mentorship partnerships.
