Valerie Maynard in the Studio Museum in Harlem, 1971 Valerie Maynard, 85, sculptor, printmaker, designer and educator died last week in Baltimore. The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) presented a survey of her work in 2020. Maynard grew up in Harlem. Her parents met as teenagers, when her mother came from Miami to visit family in New York. Her father was smitten and, hoping to make an impression, built a bicycle out of wood to ride her around the neighborhood. They married 18 months later and had three children— Valerie was the middle child. Bill Gaskins, a professor at Maryland Institute College of Art, noted in an essay for the BMA’s exhibition catalogue, “Despite the historical, political, racial, and gender-specific forces in the life of the artist, Maynard’s work excludes no one who has ever been in love (or wanted to be), sought justice, or recognized injustice. Her work excludes no one who ever shared a moment with a parent, grandparent, or guardian, sibling or child, or God.” (notes from Baltimore Magazine) Vol. 49 No. 39• The Journal For Community News, Business & The Arts • insightnews.comVol 49 No 39• The Journal For News, Business & The Arts • insightnews comSeptember 26, 2022 - October 2, 202226 2022 October 2 2022 INSIGHT NEWS IS AUDITED BY THE ALLIANCE FOR AUDITED MEDIA TO PROVIDE OUR ADVERTISER PARTNERS WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF MEDIA AS SURANCE.I N S I G H T N E W S I S A U D I T E D B Y T H E A L L I A N C E F O R A U D I T E D M E D I A T O P R O V I D E O U R A D V E R T I S E R P A R T N E R S W I T H T H E H I G H E S T L E V E L O F M E D I A A S S U R A N C E Insight News News

of royal Black women soldiers. The Woman King brings such women to the center and importantly marks both the evolution and realization of this on-screen representation of Black women and the cinematic evolution of its director, Gina Prince-Bythewood.Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood with screenwriter Dana Stevens, The Woman King is inspired by the real-life Dahomey female warriors, the Agojie, who were formed in the 1700s and became legendary fighters. Viola Davis, who plays the fictional character General Nanisca – arguably a composite nod to various African warriors like Nzinga and Yaa Asantewaa, and an emerging young Agojie, Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), lead an extraordinary cast including, Lashana Lynch as the enthralling Izogie and John Boyega as young King Ghezo.

Devin Weiland convicted in Freeborn County for shooting Albert Lea police officer and two innocent bystanders in a November 2020 standoff during which he shot more than 80 rounds.
The Woman King has a copious amount of violence and blood; brutal warring between different African nations and between the Africans and Europeans involved in turbulent at turns reciprocal slave trafficking is one of the unfortunate realistic historical threads exploited in the film’s unapologetic anti-Atlantic slave trade and African involvement sentiment. However, the spectacle of physical violence is in service to the dominant and most important critical representation in the film –women whose reaffirming

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison last week secured the conviction in Freeborn County of Devin Weiland on three counts of attempted murder in the first degree, including one count of attempted murder of a police officer, and three counts of seconddegree assault with a dangerous weapon. The conviction comes in connection with a November 29, 2020 standoff during which Weiland shot more than 80 rounds, including ones that shot and injured Albert Lea Police Department Officer Kody Needham, as well as resident who lived at the same apartment complex and a neighbor who drove by the complex on his way to work. After a week of testimony, a Freeborn County jury deliberated for two and a half hours before convicting Weiland on all six Attorneycounts.General Ellison accepted prosecution of this case upon referral from the Freeborn County Attorney’s Office, pursuant to Minnesota Statutes Sec. 8.31. Since 2019, attorneys of the Criminal Division of Attorney General Ellison’s office have prosecuted 38 cases of serious violent crime in 22 counties across Minnesota, including cases of murder, attempted murder, manslaughter,

Here women dance, train, and braid each other’s hair, tend tenderly to one another’s wounds, strategize, debate respectfully, learn to transcend ethnic differences, and grow their sense of individual and collective empowerment.
