TECHNOLOGY TRENDS

Technology Trends In Hospitality Today

F

ew years ago, hotels, motels and other hospitality businesses occupied a fairly simple space in people’s lives— they were a place for guests to lay their heads away from home. But anyone who’s spent time in the hospitality industry in the last several years knows that the role of technology in hospitality businesses has drastically expanded. In many cases, they’re becoming hubs of activity unto themselves. Most of this activity relies directly or indirectly on technology, making IT more important to hotel operations and the guest experience than ever before. Some of the top communication technology trends in hospitality today are herewith below, review and think about which ones make sense for your business for now and long term and start to plan on the same . And if you see an opportunity, you can get out in front and begin planning accordingly to remain competitive for in hospitality, every advantage counts each day. 1. Mobile Device As A Door Key It’s fascinating that a function as simple as a door key could undergo so much evolution. But the tool that once started as a carefully shaped piece of metal quickly turned into electronic key cards, and is set to shed its physical form altogether. The next evolution of the hotel key transforms it into data on a guest’s mobile device. Some hotels have already starting using implementing this, whether it involves NFC technology or visually scanning a code like many airports now do with plane tickets.

2. Service Automation Self-serve is in. Today, many guests prefer technology over human interaction for simple tasks. Remote check-in and checkout options are becoming popular, and some hotels are beginning to work with apps that let guests order room service right from their mobile devices. There’s a whole range of basic guest requests that can be automated with the right technology, which frees hotel staff up for other activities that enhance the guest experience. And the trend is only going to accelerate. 3. Fixed-Mobile Convergence Few decades ago, people used their room phones. However, the pervasiveness of mobile devices has relegated the conventional room phone to a vastly reduced

role. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a role moving forward. The room phone of the future may serve as a hub for a larger connected experience. Imagine a guest arrives at your hotel and pairs his mobile device to his room phone. Now he can use his mobile to control the TV and the sound system, perhaps even the blinds. He can use it to request a wakeup call if he finds himself out late. You can let him know that his dry cleaning is ready, even if he’s across town at a meeting. And if he needs to take his call from your lobby into a cab so he doesn’t miss a meeting—the handoff from Wi-Fi to 4G is seamless. It may sound like science fiction, but many of the pieces of this scenario are already available or in development. The guest of tomorrow will be more connected than ever before.  4. Guest Apps The vision of the connected guest entails nearly every aspect of the guest experience. Something as complex as that needs a single hub from which to operate—and guest apps for personal mobile devices are the natural place to host all of these functions. A smartly designed guest app combines everything from deal notifications to hotel services to loyalty programs. If you see a guest used the group rate for a conference, you could use the app to electronically send your guest the event itinerary, complete with a map of meeting spaces where sessions will be held. Most major hotels have some element of this picture in play already, and they’re adding

6

INSIGHT HOTELIER #13 | SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER, 2018

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS capabilities every day. Some of the major flags are closer, but much of the technology and integration is still in development. Regardless of who gets there first, one thing is certain—the hotel with a truly connected experience will be full of very happy, very empowered guests. 5. Battle for Bandwidth / Internet Connectivity A smart phone, A laptop, A tablet and An e-reader. It seems like hospitality guests bring every Internet bandwidth-sucking device they own when they travel. And whether they’re travelling for business or pleasure, you can bet you’re going to hear about it if they can’t connect as quickly and reliably as they’re used to at home. But a hotel is not a home. You have to multiply those data needs by dozens, if not hundreds, of guests—possibly thousands if you land a big conference. It’s a huge strain and one that many of the best hospitality brands are working on. Whatever your solution, rest assured, the demand for bandwidth at hotels is only going to grow daily and you need a better budget each year. 6. Location-Based Services Much of this technology is in its infancy, but the implications are huge. Being able to understand where hotel staff and guests are located at any given time creates all kinds of opportunities to improve the guest experience—from being able to deliver services to guests while freeing them from their rooms to helping event staff operate more efficiently to turning over rooms more quickly and beyond. Some employee location-based features are already available using SIP-DECT, but this is just the beginning. This is a category to keep an eye on. 7. Tech Lounges Airline check-ins. Local info guides. A place where guests can get out of their rooms but still access Wi-Fi to relax or get work done. The use cases for technology in hospitality seem to grow every year, and savvy hospitality businesses are transforming these guest desires into stylish semi-public spaces where guests can engage tech on their terms. Many guests are even beginning to include these kinds of technologies in their online hotel search criteria, so hospitality businesses that lack them may eventually find themselves at a disadvantage. 8. Tech-Enabled Meeting Spaces The modern meeting space has evolved. No longer is it about tables and chairs and nice serving carts. Modern meetings run on technology. Business people need to make Multimedia, Presentations and Video

conferencing remote attendees—sometimes both simultaneously. And for the marathon meetings, they’d like access to services like catering with minimal interruptions. Most of all, smart hotels know they need these spaces to be as user-friendly as possible. The A/V rooms of the past that required dedicated engineers are no longer an option. If you think these kinds of business needs are limited to boardroom-style conference spaces, you’re missing an important part of the picture—business customers are increasingly asking for advanced technology enablement in ballrooms and event halls, as well.

9. Social Listening Guests have a lot to say about their experiences at hotels, but they don’t always say it directly to you. And in a hospitality world where word of mouth and online reviews have more influence every day, it’s one of the reasons that more and more hotels have started investing in social listening tools. These tools allow hotels to find out about guests’ wants, needs, desires, complaints and more—and jump into the conversation if it makes sense. Some even let you keep an eye on the competition. The Internet is treasure trove of business intelligence if you know how to look.

HOSPITALITY EQUIPMENT

Laundry set up insight

O

ne of the hottest new trends we are seeing in Nairobi is the rise of the small and medium sized laundries. Driving through Westlands it’s hard not to notice that these small businesses are opening up all over the city.

The question I always ask myself is why these businesses are thriving in the city all of a sudden. The answer to this question is a lot more complicated that we might initially think.

available due to the influx of people to the city and the obvious lack of running rivers in the city. The next option that we have all tried out as bachelors or bachelorettes is the traditional washing in the bath tub.

The traditional method of washing our clothes in a passing river is no longer

We all know how effective this is but how many of us have hours to wash and hang our laundry. This is time consuming and we all know that feeling of waiting for our favorite jeans to dry on a Friday night while Kengeles is calling our name. Enter the small laundry in two different models. The first model is my favorite, the self-service laundry. I usually go in on early on a Saturday morning. It takes me around and hour and a half to wash and dry my clothes and gives me a great opportunity to catch up on social media and check in on the antics of my friends from Friday night. The second model is the full service laundry, the Range Rover of Laundromats. You arrive, drop off that sack of dirty clothes, head over to Art café and sip that delicious cappuccino while someone else literally ‘does your dirty work’. Now there is one more module although it has not yet arrived in our beloved Kenya. On the rise in Europe and USA there is the elusive full service, entertainment Laundromat. It’s a Laundromat that has a number of activities to entertain customers while you wait for your laundry. Now my friend, this is the real next level, PlayStation, coffee bar and on Friday and Saturday nights a DJ dropping that big bass. Let us hope that one of beloved Kenya Laundromats opens a playground like this for us soon.

HOSPITALITY EQUIPMENT

Fast food business set up H ave you ever thought of starting a fast food business? Do you have a small medium or large restaurant and you need some idea’s to keep yourself competitive in the market place? Over the last five years Kenya has seen a number of interesting trends, the rise of fried chicken, French fries and pizza to name only a few.

All of the leading fried chicken restaurants have one thing in common, good quality pressure fryers. You may be asking yourself what is a pressure fryer? The answer is quite simple, it is a sealed chamber frying unit that traps in the moisture and heat and creates pressure from the evaporating chicken juices. This is the key to crispy fried chicken with delicious moist flesh in half the time that a regular fryer takes.

The art of the French fry is a lot more complicated than most of us realize. When you drop that basket of perfectly cut potatoes into the oil we need to ensure that the elements in the fryer are powerful enough to maintain the oils temperature. If the oil temperature drops too far due to the effect of the cold potato sticks we will see that the chips come out oily as they suck up every drop of oil that they can. During that busy lunch time rush this is the most obvious and we need to ensure that the fryer we choose is of great quality and correct specifications. Italians have known the secrets of pizza for many years now and now we as Kenyans are moving at a rapid speed towards this delicious meal. The trouble with pizza is simple, do we know how to cook this fantastic product correctly, how do we ensure that every single pizza is evenly baked to perfection when there are so many options from thin crust to deep dish? The answer is simply to look at the leading pizza franchises in our beautiful country and see how they manage to get this right, a top quality conveyor pizza oven that can reach and maintain temperatures of 300 degrees Celsius. This machine is easily set for time, speed and temperature ensuring that each and every pizza is a delicious evenly baked master piece. Be sure to choose your equipment carefully, many of the cheap Juakali options available are dangerous to your safety and spare parts are not always available.

HOTEL BOOKINGS INSIGHTS

Why hotels should invest in direct bookings over Online Travel Agents (OTA’S)

T

hoteliers should be investing in increasing their direct bookings and start building a sustainable future for their hotel, this is due to:

Online travel agencies (OTA’s) have been taking over the hotel industry, so far that up to 4 out of 5 bookings are made through OTA’s! This means that OTA’s are gaining momentum and in return hotels pay more and more commission. Hotels are starting to fight back and with big chains such as Marriott and Hilton leading the way. They are starting campaigns such as “It pays to book direct” and “Stop clicking around” which notifies their customers of the advantages of booking direct. Instead of investing in commissions for OTA’s,

“Direct Marketing to Guests. The Accommodation agrees not to specifically target Guests that have been obtained via [OTA] in either online or offline marketing promotions or solicited or unsolicited mail.”

he direct booking battle has been going on for a while now and more and more hotels start focusing on the increase of their direct bookings. Why is this so important and what are the advantages of direct bookings over OTA’s?

1. Gain insight into your customer’s data When your hotel has worked together with OTA’s before, this contract statement might look familiar to you:

This clause in the contract specifically states that the hotel should not contact the guests that

“A direct booking does not only bring advantages to customers, it also brings big advantages to the hotels!” booked through the OTA and cannot target them for any marketing purposes. Sometimes this clause even includes that the OTA will be the only owner of the guest’s data and this is where you should be careful. When your customers book direct, you have access to all their data: gain their contact information and get to know their booking preferences. You can use this information to your advantage and get to know your customers better. 2. Build a loyal customer base In general, customers who book directly through your website are more likely to become a returning guest. When they have taken a closer look at your website, they will get the feel of the ambiance of your hotel and brand. This in contrast with OTA’s where all hotels are displayed in the same way and you will just be one of many. When your customers book direct, you can offer them specials by means of a loyalty program. A role model in this field is Marriott Hotels. Their direct bookings guests have special advantages such as special check-in and check-out times and they can earn points for every stay which they can trade for special offers such as an extra night stay, a discount or a special offer such as a scuba-diving trip, culinary workshop or tickets to a musical. Since you also have your customers’ data now, you can contact them and target them with campaigns for returning visitors. 3. Lower distribution costs This is of course the most obvious statement, but also super important! OTAs can ask insanely high commission costs, ranging from 10 to 25%. Save on this and increase your direct revenue by focusing on direct bookings for your hotel. Even if you use other services or various offers to convince your website visitors to book direct, the distribution costs will be lower. For example, you can offer a discount of 5% to get your visitor to book directly through your website, while otherwise you might have spent 15% on commissions to an OTA. All in all, when focusing on direct bookings, hotels have the chance to build stronger relations with their guests and they can save a huge amount on commission costs. This all will help hotels to build a sustainable future for themselves.
