RETAIL TRENDS

Kenya Formal Retail on a rebound

T

he Retail Trade Association of Kenya (RETRAK) is pleased to confirm that the year 2018 has opened on a positive note for the formal retail sector. From our assessment, the Year 2017 was probably the most difficult for the sector and it is hoped that both the political and economic climate in 2018 will allow for consumer demand and shopping patterns to return to normal levels. Overall, we estimate that billions of shillings were lost due to trading disruptions during the electoral cycle and customer apprehension. Following a market review on the operating prospects amongst our membership we are encouraged to report that; 1. The Kenyan formal retail space has opened the year with marked signs of resilience and positive growth. Distress signs experienced last year are currently under management with clear and positive signs of recovery. 2. Indigenous investors in the local retail sector continue to lead efforts to accelerate and deepen formal retail trade. Our internal research confirms that the supermarket sector features 25 key players with indigenous investors enjoying a 98.1% market share. In the last two months, such investors including Tuskys, Naivas, Quickmart, Magunas, Rams, Souk and Lemigo Kisumu have successfully managed to expand formal retail value with the opening of more than ten fully fledged supermarket branches. Combined, the indigenous investors have facilitated more than Kshs 1.2billion economic investments with the recent branch openings in Nairobi, Kiambu, Sagana, Kisumu, Kericho, and Eldoret. The investments have also afforded the economy more than 600 direct job opportunities.

6

3. International operators with a market share of 1.79% are also playing a good role complementing the trail blazing efforts by the indigenous investors. French retailer Carrefour, has opened its 4th store in Kenya at the Junction Mall as has Botswana retailer, Choppies at the new South Field Mall, Embakasi. Game Discount is also set to open its second outlet before the second quarter of 2018 at the WaterFront Mall. Currently, multinational supermarket sector players have a cumulative six branches. 4. This year, we shall also be welcoming the entry of French Sports goods retailer Decathlon who are setting up shop at The Hub Karen and Turkish furniture retailer DoÄ&#x;taĹ&#x; Exclusive who are set to open a shop in Parklands. 5. Local lifestyle fashion retailer Mavazi, a subsidiary of Tusker Mattresses is also gearing up for further expansion with more stores in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. Jade Collections closed the year by opening a branch in Westlands. 6. The local pharmaceutical retail sub sector is also enjoying good growth with progressive investments.

INSIGHT RETAIL #18 APRIL - JUNE, 2018

Goodlife Pharmacy has quickly grown to over 35 stores, with plans to expand its footprint to 100+ stores over the next five years. 7. Commendable legal and related efforts to secure the survival of Nakumatt Holdings (in Administration) are still underway and the RETRAK fraternity remains optimistic that a mutually satisfying resolution will soon be realised. The recent placement of Nakumatt on Administration plus the ongoing restocking of 10 key Nakumatt branches, is noteworthy as is the extensive restocking of various Uchumi branches. 8.

RETRAK members, particularly Supermarket players have also doubled efforts to streamline their operations. Significant Information Technology investments have been undertaken to enhance corporate governance. Key retailers particularly those in the supermarket space have reported good progress on efforts to raise their efficiencies to guarantee prompt supplier settlements. These include inventory management systems, data sharing with suppliers, and product range

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Retail Project Management By Kyle Temple – Murray

K

enyan retail space has of recent had a huge transformation from local owned family business set ups to corporate business setups thanks to the entry of global brands to the region retail space which has taken our retail to the global benchmark standards with a lot to be emulated by global brands by local brands of which one of the aspect remains to be Project management which will need a deeper understanding by local retail stores on how the same would work perfectly for the local retailers and we do hope the same will be adopted sooner for retailers to operate efficiently and professionally so as to remain relevant and competitive on the retail space. With Project management whether managed In-house by Retailers or Outsourced, the roles remains that after the Identification of Retail space by the Retail Owner, The team is handed

offer to do the work with entails pulling out the entire technical team to do set up for interior setups, furniture and fittings fixtures until it’s ready for the Operational department to kick in stock the store and start operations before opening the doors to public. The Project team always defines the timelines of the store to be ready based on the state of the store size and location if on mall or stand alone locations which is always defined by the property manager if the retailers is a hanger tenant on the mall will work with the timelines of the Property manager to ensure the stores will be ready at the ideal stipulated time. Retailers are also in the verge of changing the business models to look at critically retail Consultancy in aspects of what to stock for what market and what is always giving the returns within the specific stores which indeed will need to be appreciated while looking

at our Kenyan retail stores - Fresh focus by retailers is key for it pulls on more customers and due to competition on the industry we will see more of Crazy Margins or Value additives to customers which will tend to reduce the margins in FMCG and Service departments respectively. Retailers will also need to be cautious of the dealers they give the tasks for the same will impact on the quality of job done based on experience and support and maintenance of equipments procured during the process for its key for smooth operation within the stores. Project management is key to avoid any downtime of equipment failure which is replicated by the type of the services given to customers which in turn defines if he/she will be coming back to the store and doing referrals to their respective networks as we look at competitive retail space in kenya.

RETAIL DESIGN

Retail Stores Design and Merchandising Insights although they will be upset you will be getting them to walk through the store, this allows the consumer to see what you have on offer. Ensure there is no clutter, a good merchandised store, clean shelves, visible pricing. All these housekeeping rules are important to be taken into consideration and needs to be applied on the entire trading floors. During the drawing stage, a proposed general layout is provided. This is done by obtaining information on the retail store in question.

By Jared – Arc Retail he perfect designed store does not exist. Simply because in retail there is always something new something fresh. FMCG is the most interesting industries that we find is constantly reinventing itself.

What have you got that your opposition does not have. This is where you can increase the basket but consistency in your range is critical, out of stock is essentially getting out of business.

When we look at assisting a retailer in a new store, or revamping a store we take the most important thing in the store, and that is the merchandising of stock. Why, simple this is what generates the revenue in a store.

The merchandising flow is one aspect this with managing the category is important. Each category along with the flow will have a positive impact on your customer and where possible a bit of cross merchandising will add value and generally this can increase you overall Gross Profit - GP.

T

So if we looking at shop floor, bakery, butchery or any other area it is the stock that puts money in the bank. Merchandising flow is important as it has an impact on how the customer shops, this in turn assists in creating impulse shopping. We are able to allow the consumer to shop as there is a psychological impact that the merchandising flow has.

The merchandisers working in this area need to also play their part, they not there to just pack stock they there to ensure they manage the category, merchandise it correctly and maintain the levels of consistency, take it a step further and get them to communicate with the consumers and obtain this feedback daily, for retailers, they need to take this information and let it work for the store to help improve on customer expectations.

We all want to increase the basket spend, ideas on advertising brings feet, but one sacrifices margin. The idea on A store relay will upset customers but the range, the correct range. 12 INSIGHT RETAIL #18 APRIL - JUNE, 2018

Along with a brief of what is required all of which has to be market related which will allow the retailer to see the potential, or a long term idea that one can phase in the various offerings in the development. In this process there will often be a number of changes, it is important to get everyone in your store involved, getting many minds around the table can add benefit and excitement to your retail project which works for Supermarkets, Hardware’s and Pharmacies. Store Layout’s are done in conjunction with the general layout taking into consideration the overall space allocation on all areas in the store, from dry goods as well as the production areas, this is dependent on the retail outlet size and expectation of the retailer and must take into considerations of all electrical, plumbing and equipment layouts to allow ease of furniture and fitting installation.
