RETAIL SHOPS - RISK management

Risks Involved in Opening a Retail Shop

S

everal entrepreneurs dream of opening a lucrative retail chains, be it a high-end electronics outlet or a modest yet chic clothing boutique. However, opening a retail shops is not without risk. Business owners must ensure a variety of conditions are met in order to run a successful retail stores.

*

Pricing

Price setting is a risky undertaking in the retail business. Because the store is not yet established, business owners often face difficulty in determining what price to charge for their goods. This risk is especially apparent for retail stores selling custom-made goods. While some retail stores determine prices based on the competitor’s values, businesses purveying customized items cannot rely entirely on this method. Avoiding these risks entails devising a warranty policy and writing disclaimers for pricing errors. Savy retail owners also experiment with different pricing strategies, including initial ‘buy one, get one free’ offers and other grand opening discounts.

Economic Conditions

Retailers are often sensitive to economic conditions because they sell items typically purchased with disposable income. When economic conditions decline and consumers have less spending money, retail businesses often experience hardship. Opening a retail store carries the risk of poor timing. For instance, many entrepreneurs who went through the planning phases during the boom times of 2006 experienced financial drawbacks when the store finally opened during the great recession of 2008. Some retail store owners use downturns to their advantage. Renting storefronts, for example, can be significantly cheaper during downturns as property owners scramble to lease space. Other advantages may come from selling recession-proof items such as ready-made meals and knock-off luxury goods.

Taste and Preferences

Changing taste and preferences is another risk, specifically for stores selling technology-related items. Planning on which items to sell is an ever-changing activity -- for example, a retail store might plan on stocking the latest music players and at a certain cost; this figure may change before the store opens on account of new players entering the market. Many retail stores circumvent this risk by entering into deals with wholesale manufacturers of these items. When the latest item is manufactured, the retail store knows in advance the expected cost and warranty associated with the good. Businesses must be willing to revamp their image often in order to compete. Use heavy advertising for new and unexplored products and collecting consumer feedback frequently as a way of maintaining customers.

Theft and Damage

Though service industries worry about theft of ideas, retail stores face an ever-present concern regarding theft of physical goods. Opening a retail store requires purchasing a large stock of items and replenishing these orders frequently. Managing this risk requires having an inventory management strategy in place. Some stores use electronic tracking devices while other businesses utilize in-store security cameras to monitor employees and customers. Online stores must prevent online data theft as well. Employ a number of preventative measures, including full disk encryption and hard-drive encryption. These steps prevent database hacking and preserve sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, from being stolen.

FINANCIAL ADVISORY - HOSPITALITY

What about Micro Credit Loans

M

icrocredit has been deemed as a way to help poorer people launch very small businesses and run them sustainably after some mentorship programmes but nowadays has become an alternative to the basic lending of every institution like Micro finance Institution, banks and even govt bodies / NGO’s have such programmes running as micro lenders, most of which are nonprofits, receive the bulk of the funds they lend out at small administration fees based on certain requirements borrowers must meet to qualify for a microloan, but the requirements are much less stringent than those at traditional lenders / banks. Micro loans for small business offer a variety of benefits. Business Training Most of the Microlenders provide business and technical training to their borrowers. This educational component, which microborrowers must fulfill before their application is accepted, is a step in the right direction. With sound business training and planning, more startups can avoid costly mistakes and are more likely to be successful in repaying their microloans and building a solid credit history in the process. Flexible Requirements Another aspect that makes these loans attractive is the flexible guidelines for loan approvals cum repayment period which can be stretched to weekly, monthly as agreed upon with favorable interests. Time Time is always of the essence but especially so for small business owners in need of working capital within shortest time and can only access on from such institutions within hours or a day if goes longest. Loan Security While many lenders are unwilling to approve a loan unless you have standing credit history, business history, and sufficient collateral etc which are un accessible to small business /start ups. Micro lenders take other factors into consideration as a security which may include personal collateral and a personal guarantee. But what truly separates micro lenders from other lenders is the personal touch. Micro lenders take a more hands-on approach with their borrowers and more on personal references than any other collateral needed. Building Credit Microloans provide a pathway for small business owners to build or rebuild their personal credit history. Many applicants have little or no credit history and don’t have the collateral that larger businesses can use to secure a loan thus becoming the only available option for SME
