How to Make Your Retail Store Display a Silent Salesperson By Marion Crawford

T

he modern business world is characterized by fierce competition. Only the businesses that get their marketing right get to survive. The size of the company doesn’t matter; the relevant marketing strategies have to be put in place. One of the most crucial promotional strategies is the display. How the products are displayed and presented to the end customer is essential. It determines which store the customers will choose, and which products the customer will purchase. The effective implementation of the following strategies will help make your retail store display a silent salesperson: The Cleanliness and Neatness of the Display is a Must Without a clean and neat store, the other display strategies may not work

6

or result in the intended outcome. Customers are attracted by a clean and neat store; cleanliness communicates professionalism to the customers. A neat store makes it easy for customers to find the products they want; it makes easy for them to navigate as they pick the products, It’s crucial that the store is always clean and neat.

displayed close to each other.

Related Products Should Be Placed Together There is a clear and precise pattern in consumer buying behavior. The studies carried out over the years reveal a consistent customer shopping pattern – customers always purchase related product together. When related products are grouped together, it helps customers shop fast. At some instances, customers can buy more products than planned as a result of grouping the related products together. To make your store silent salespersons ensure that similar products are grouped and

Make the Display Interesting and Engaging Visual merchandising is essential to keep customers engaged. The use of color is an effective approach to keeping customers engaged by making the store look beautiful and attractive to them. Using color in a visually appealing way is a useful promotional tool for individual products and the overall display.

INSIGHT RETAIL # 20 JANUARY - MARCH 2019

Don’t Overcrowd the Display One of the mistakes that most store owners do is to overcrowd their store due to reasons such as space available. Avoid it. Customers don’t like overcrowded displays because it’s difficult to shop in that kind of an environment.

The practical implementation of the above factors will help in promoting your store and hence contribute to the overall performance of the store.

RETAIL VISUAL MERCHANDISING

7 Ways to Transform Retail Store Displays into Sales a sign that says DO NOT BUY. Displays are supposed to get messed up. Don’t fear customer interaction with your goods; just make sure to straighten up constantly for it induces them to buy after interacting with the product, keep up with shelve management team to keep the shelve neat always. 5. Trust in Little Surprises Always... A merchandising Surprises would be a totally unrelated item used as a fun prop, such as a soup bowl with a sweater collection, or a stuffed animal with your kitchenware display. While adding a prop to every display is overkill, the possibilities should always be in the back of your mind like on a display chiller with a mug or glass display alongside would improve sales especially if they are new arrivals. By Bob Phibbs There are a lot of ways your retail store displays can be your silent salesperson. The trick is to make sure your displays include some of the basics which include: 1. Change your displays monthly You’ve got to keep your customers guessing – a little, anyway. Every couple of weeks move displays around to keep them from getting stale – and certainly move them when new merchandise comes in. Since the fairly new products will still be selling, switch your displays two weeks after their arrival. Move one display from the front to the middle of the store and another display from the middle to the back.

grouping shouldn’t entirely made up of one product which is for warehousing, not merchandising. You can create a display by product use, such as all items related to brewing and drinking tea, for example on display but color but make sure you use another strong color to pop out against the dull color. I.e. Think white and red or Red and black. Avoid monochrome – One Color displays because, although possibly chic, human eyes quickly get the point and move on – frequently without buying. 4. Don’t ever put up a sign that says DO NOT TOUCH. Don’t even do that in a glass store! Why? Because you might as well be putting up

2. Try a little tenderness In merchandising, as in life, the best things are things you want, not what you need. So give your customer that as well. Put the fanciest, newest, most expensive, dreamworthy items in the most prominent place in your store. Be sure to have several levels of height and enough products so that the customer can pick up and touch these desired items without having to totally dismantle your beautiful display. 3. Never, never, never, EVER builds a monochromatic display. Generally speaking, grouping items by product use or two or three colors – you’re looking for the one thing that makes it a group. Unless you run a grocery store, your

6. Light up your display like it’s a meteor shower. You’ll probably have to adjust overhead lighting to do this. But if you have a particularly dark display with no way to highlight it from above, consider moving it to an existing light source or light from below with small portable spot lights. Remember, proper lighting can make your merchandise seem wondrous. 7. Put Price tags on everything. You know how much you hate asking how much something is? Your customers are just like you, so make sure all of your stock is priced. No one wants to have to ask a clerk how much something costs.

Malls Insights and Trends for Retailers

By Titus Korir

M

all culture is here with us and yet to cope with the same. People go to malls to shop as well as for Leisure in other parts of the world but here are different story. Malls are literally empty off the 1st floor to other upper floors of the mall on footfall but just in case it’s full especially on a weekend people are just walking about without buying. Only eatery places are getting decent footfall which has turned out to be meeting points if not idlers corners within the mall. That means, for businesses in the malls to break-even, they need extra sales which is likely to be triggered. When the malls are not attracting enough traffic, the shops can’t make money. They soon close down making the mall empty and not attracting retailers due to cost of operation stores on the mall due to higher rent which is about 30 per

14

“While a third of most shopping spaces are literally empty, there is still new malls coming u surprisingly on the same Locality” cent higher than rents in other buildings within the same locality which has triggered some retailers to opt for such

INSIGHT RETAIL # 20 JANUARY - MARCH 2019

stand alone facilities adjacent to or few meters to the malls. Why are customers not frequenting these malls? Besides other reasons like economy not well such that no enough disposable income nor security, there are so many Malls in Nairobi which is Over 35 Malls in Nairobi and its environs doing just the same, The downfall of Nakumatt, the major anchor tenant for most malls, has worsen the matter which has led to so many malls lack interest to frequent foot fall to the mall without major retailer on the store who fits the mall theme or existence in the locality.   Again, the shops in malls are mostly of the same nature, none is theme preferably Village market nor ‘Sarit Centre Tops the list as a weekend destiny due to nature

MALL TENDS

of the activities in mall which brings to the question, Why drive from one mall to another just to shop for the same things, from the same retailer? Malls should be positioned in mind of who will be the customer today and few years to come and revolutionizing the mall with the clientele age and needs to make it a relevant destiny everyday and if not done well, businesses in the mall don’t sell because they are stocked for different customers. So, they soon hit a financial crunch and unable to continue resulting to “TO LET POSTERS” within the mall. Mall promotions to attract new tenants taking up space at<Specific Mall> between < Respective Dates> will be offered a six-month rent-free period or

50% rent discount for 6months or no Deposit and rent for 3months – Which is all promotions to entice tenants to have stores in the mall which is not as critical as customer footfall to maintain retailers pay the rent when due after promotion and sustainable for the better period of time thereafter. Graduated rents payment could also be a solution to above rather than short term promotions. A new mall will sure take time before it gets a reasonable number of customers to sustain its tenants. That is the time businesses in the malls suffer the most, tenants get in and closes after few months. To alleviate that, mall management should consider applying quarterly graduated rents calculated based on the number of customers the

mall is able to attract and converted by retailer’s as sales from time to time.   Kenyan malls don’t have differentiating themes; they lack that unique identity to attract varied customers over each other unlike in Dubai where malls are themed. Different malls target different customers with different products. Some malls could also have various floors positioned for different clientele. Specialization and scaling are also used to theme a mall. A themed mall like Emirates Mall in Dubai has a whole floor selling the same items but varied brands, but scaled in a way that you will not find such offers, experience, and products anywhere else within Dubai which is what is lacking at the moment in Kenyan but few malls are getting there soon. We do expect as Insight Publication to get more insights to Mall owners and empower them to market their malls using the publication targeting Retailers who will make choices on where to set up their outlet based on target customers of the mall with the joint partnership with Property managers of various malls within the city and beyond.
