Healthcare Staffing Companies The Backbone of the Healthcare Sector

T

hat we are living in turbulent times is axiomatic, but it has once again reminded us of the significance of the healthcare sector. And this in turn has affirmed the need for qualified and skilled healthcare professionals. Here is where healthcare staffing companies come into the picture. Patient satisfaction plays a major role in the treatment, recovery, and reputation of the healthcare facility. To rope in the right talent and skill, healthcare organisations have resorted to healthcare staffing companies. These companies provide placement services in healthcare by recruiting qualified staff and help professionals to find the right kind of work that suits their qualifications, needs and expertise. Healthcare staffing is crucial as the healthcare employees are largely responsible for the patient’s care and well-being during his/her stay in the hospital or nursing home or even after that. Having the right healthcare staff is pivotal for any healthcare organisation and is responsible factor in providing the best in patient care. Healthcare facilities, be it private or government, always have a demand for qualified healthcare professionals. Employees on the other hand want job security and positions suitable for them. There is no dearth of skills yet there seems to be shortage of skilled manpower. On the other hand, qualified medical and allied professionals do not seem to land the right kind of job for themselves. Healthcare staffing companies come to the rescue of such employers and jobseekers by providing staffing solutions that satisfy the needs of all. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has made staffing more challenging for these companies, not just in recruiting healthcare professionals but also experts to administer the

vaccine. Some of the companies stood up to brave the challenge and provide the best during such precarious conditions. These healthcare staffing companies have a tailored approach while supplying healthcare professionals like general physicians, specialists, surgeons, lab technicians. registered nurses and midwives, radiologists, medical imaging professionals, physiotherapists and allied staffs in all medical disciplines to hospitals, nursing homes and for in-home care. Understanding the requirements of the clients and sourcing healthcare staff to them, is a challenge that some of the staffing companies are taking up with grit. They are responsible for screening, recruiting, and retaining the right candidates in healthcare facilities. It helps healthcare facilities to find the appropriate staff and it saves their time. But, pandemic or no pandemic, health is of paramount importance today and people are unwilling to compromise on it. Taking note of the service that these healthcare staffing companies are providing to cater to the needs of medical facilities and health requirements of the society, we at Insights Care handpicked some outstanding ones. Learn more about them in our latest edition - 10 Most Trusted Healthcare Staffing Companies 2021, where we have featured their services and their unique approach in doing so.

COVER STORY

Sculpting Aspiring Nursing Professionals into Expert Caregivers

T

he COVID-19 pandemic was a testament to the fact that healthcare workers play a quintessential role in the sustenance and development of the healthcare industry. The impact endured by healthcare providers in terms of the pandemic being an evident threat to their staff and the subsequent shortage of the medical workforce, was grievously significant. Considering the same, healthcare service providers transitioned towards leveraging the solutions offered by staffing companies, with the intent of possessing a flexible workforce. Being the experts in recruiting the right talent, staffing companies cater to every manpower-related need of their clients, to address deficiency in skills or at times, shifting demand in skilled staff. This edition titled, 10 Most Trusted Healthcare Staffing Companies 2021, emphasizes on bringing into spotlight, companies that have ceaselessly delivered expert staffing solutions to associated healthcare facilities and service providers. And one prominent name among such companies is RN Express Staffing Registry, LLC. Established in 2009, RN Express Staffing Registry is a

healthcare professional and the hospitals and facilities. The team at RN Express works to match its nurses with the right healthcare facilities, and train them themselves.

healthcare staffing agency based in New York. The company is a provider of qualified and skilled healthcare personnel in the industry. The company’s mission is to deliver excellent healthcare services to all ages by providing experienced, competent, specialized, and highly skilled staff – trained to meet the increasing demands of the medical industry. RN Express aims to provide and maintain ongoing high standard quality of care and client satisfaction. Its vision has always been to be recognized as one of the prestigious providers in the delivery of the finest healthcare services in the United States. The company was founded by three exceptional women, Sally Nuñez, the President and CEO; Maria Lea Batomalaque, the VP for Marketing; and Florida Lucas, the VP for Finance/Chief Finance Officer – who are also nurses by profession with over 100 years of combined experiences in the medical field. “We personally give our time and enthusiasm to teach nurses, especially the ones who are just starting their career in nursing, an in-depth account of the nurses’ functions and expectations from them on the field,” the trio expresses.

The team at RN Express educates the recruits with a strong focus on basic documentation and competencies in nursing especially in the long-term care setting and ensure that they can support the recruits’ career development once they are deployed in the company’s partner facilities. “We live by the values of gratitude, empathy, humility, and kindness, which is the heart of our organization,” says the team. Redefining Excellence Having been established and run by nurses is one of RN Express’ biggest advantages in the industry and the company knows the needs and concerns of both ends: the

“We transition our clinicians from nursing school to the first step in their career and help them with their career development by working with the Directors of Nursing in our partner facilities to encourage and advance them into nursing leaders,” says the team. Aside from this, the team continues to offer competitive salary and develop a comprehensive benefits package with their future in mind, so their time with RN Express is not wasted. The team is also extensively mindful of its customer service. It believes, most clinicians, once they are deployed to their respective facilities, say that they do not know who to contact in case they encounter problems on the job, or worse, no one responds to their call. This is never the case for RN Express’ healthcare professionals. “We take pride in always communicating with them, as well as with our partner facilities and hospitals,” the team asserts.

10 Most Trusted Healthcare Staffing Companies 2021 To guarantee that RN Express’ operations meet the standard acceptable practices in the US, every two years the company is certified by the Joint Commission, a non-profit organization that evaluates policies and procedures in the healthcare industry that ensures safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. RN Express also values its corporate social responsibility through the Saleaflor Foundation (derived from the owners’ names, Sally, Lea, and Florida). It ensures that giving back to the local community is always included in its plans and programs. Through this medium, RN Express also supports and collaborates with other organizations.

Setting Benchmarks The prominent services delivered by RN Express Staffing Registry include: • Staffing Assistance – Started to solely provide staffing assistance to nursing homes across Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx in 2010, the company has then expanded to have presence in over 30 nursing homes in New York. The company’s partnership with AMN also enabled it to provide clinicians to the Presbyterian Groups of Hospitals, and in 2018 it partnered with the vendor management of New York City Health and Hospitals, Vizient (MedAssets Performance Management Solutions, Inc.), and

in 2020 with RightSourcing. The company now delivers nurse staffing all over New York, including Staten Island, Long Island, and upstate, along with: • • • • •

• Immigration Program – Apart from providing employment for those who encounter difficulties in finding a nursing job, RN Express’ commitment to help foreign nurses is one of the most rewarding services that it offers. The company’s business can provide opportunities to aspiring,

qualified nurses outside the US to fulfill their American dream to work and live in this country. This is one of the best contributions it has in filling the gap of shortage of nurses. • Mobile App Staffing Solution – ‘BackApp’ originated from the word ‘Back-up’, which means ‘to

The Guiding Lights Sally, Lea and Florida are known as RN Express’ ‘power trio’. The company believes that they are more than capable of running the agency as they have worked hand in hand for years to build a name in the healthcare industry in New York. It is with the founders’ experience that the associated healthcare workers are personally trained by these veteran nurses which make them stand out from the rest in terms of training, experience, and work ethics as they are trained one-on-one before being deployed to various healthcare facilities.

Here’s what the founders have to say about their experiences and roles at RN Express Staffing Registry: Sally Nuñez, the President and CEO: My 23 years of clinical experience started in 1991 when I entered the US and became a floater nurse, then a Charge Nurse, and after a few years, a Head Nurse. Though I was not fully confident at that time, I rose to the challenge and eventually became a Nursing Supervisor. In 2013, I decided to pursue RN Express full-time. To see through the potential of the company my partners and I established, I sacrificed the nursing career that I love to do and focused my time and energy here. My experience both as an employee and an employer in the past 30 years here in New York gives me the balance of making decisions in terms of what is important in the company’s operations. Being a nurse and running a business, my heart is always set on the quality of the services, while the business side of RN Express is perfectly handled by our

Administrators, Mr. Alexander Alejandrino and Mrs. Nimfa Gregorios, and our AVP for Finance, Mrs. Aida Duran. Their respective backgrounds in management, operations, and finance enables the company to perform to its fullest potential as they oversee the execution of the day-to-day tasks. Together, we share the same vision, and we take pride in our meaningful contribution to our clients’ operations and organizational efficiency that gives us a sense of wholeness and accomplishment. That is what it means to work in RN Express. Maria Lea Batomalaque, VP for Marketing I came to NYC in March of 1990. This was the start of my nursing career here in the US. From this date till I left the bedside in late 2017, I should say I had a ‘taste’ of the different fields and responsibilities of nursing in both long-term care and acute care settings. I have navigated myself from a Staff Nurse, a Charge Nurse, a Head Nurse, a Nursing Supervisor, a Medicare Special Project Coordinator and a certified MDS coordinator in longterm care. With about over 20 years of seasoned nursing experience both personally and professionally, I am happy to open up opportunities for my fellow nurses especially those who just graduated from nursing school and couldn’t find employment due to lack of clinical experience. RN Express helps them develop their skills, further their knowledge and boost their self confidence in the absence of clinical experience. We encourage our nurses to learn from their mistakes, grow from their experience, love their jobs, reach greater heights in their career and

most of all to seek guidance from Above in times of difficulties and confusion. The power trio, in their advice to the budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the healthcare staffing space, say, “Service first, before business. Understanding a medical professional—their role in the community and their natural heart to serve—that is where you can start. Once you have a clear understanding of this, you can create and build strong relationships with your employees and partners, which is essential for the business to grow.” Florida Lucas, VP for Finance/Chief Finance Officer I have extensive experience as a professional nurse in different healthcare settings with varying roles and positions. In the US, my area of nursing practice centered around long-term care setting where I rose through the ranks from being a Nursing Supervisor to Rehab Nursing Coordinator and Infection Preventionist. Currently, I am the Assistant Director of Nursing in a nursing home in Manhattan. As a co-founder of RN Express, I am directly involved in the education and training of our

nurses to ensure confidence and preparedness before deploying them to our partner facilities. My heart belongs to nursing, and fulfilling my dream of becoming a nurse, and overcoming the obstacles and barriers of all sorts, I am happy to impart my experience to my fellow nurses and help them reach new heights. Overcoming Adversities As a Healthcare Personnel (HCP) provider, planning for a community outbreak of COVID-19 is critical for maintaining availability of healthcare service providers during a response. RN Express referred to state and federal pandemic guidelines to ensure that the company protocols comply with applicable state and federal regulations and with standards set by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The company drafted a customized COVID-19 guidelines and protocols to meet its unique needs and circumstance, which included creating a task force within its administrative team to ensure the health and safety of its healthcare professionals. This is carefully updated as needed.

• Continuous delivery of care kits, PPE, medication, vitamins, and food supply, especially for those who unavoidably contracted the virus. • Daily monitoring of illness for those who were sick. • Providing housing for those who need to quarantine away from their families. Like the rest of the world, RN Express’ office staff had to quickly adapt to working from home to keep themselves and their families safe. PPP assistance from the government came in to cover for payroll, sick payment, and hazard incentives for the frontline heroes. And thankfully, the company has partnered with facilities who did not delay their payments for the services rendered by its dedicated front liners. Voyaging towards New Horizons We asked the trio about how they predict the healthcare staffing market to be in 2021and how the company is going to scale its offerings to align with that prediction, to which they said, “This pandemic not only changed our way of life but created a new norm. The causative factor is still affecting all of us and is continuously changing its movements – COVID-19 is unpredictable in nature.” “Even before the pandemic, the need for healthcare workers is increasing. There are so many factors, one of many in our opinion is the implementation of electronic medical records in all healthcare settings.” “Some veteran nurses, with 30-40 years of experience, face the challenges of adapting to the quick changes in technology in documentation, and opt to retire early. With this, the shortage of

nurses is evident, and the need to train new healthcare workers continues to rise.” “Indeed, the demand for staffing in 2021 is a good problem for us. The company is aligned with this prediction, and we are excited to take in new blood, prepare and mold them to be the next generation of nursing leaders.”

to the occasion to make sure our staffing needs were met both in the numbers of staff required and in the quality of the staff as well. I could not speak more highly about Alex, Sally and Lea.

Exhibiting Excellence…

Both Amsterdam facilities have high reputations, as measured by CMS Star ratings, rates of re-admission to hospitals and many other quality indicators. The only way these kinds of results can be achieved is by having outstanding registered nurses. RN Express has been responsible for providing Amsterdam with the quality of nurses that is necessary to achieve the results that Amsterdam has been able to attain for so many years. Our partnership with RN Express has unequivocally resulted in the remarkably high level of care Amsterdam provides and the outstanding reputation it enjoys, RN Express has clearly made a major difference in the success of our business. They have my highest recommendation!” – Jim Davis, President/CEO, Amsterdam Nursing Home

• “The Amsterdam Nursing Home and the Amsterdam at Harborside have been working with RN Express Staffing Registry for ten years. They have provided their services in two locations: a large skilled nursing facility in Manhattan and a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Port Washington, NY. I have primarily worked with Alex Alejandrino, Sally Nuñez, and Maria Lea Batomalaque. Each of these individuals have always been responsive and sensitive to all our needs in an effort to ensure adequate staffing levels with the goal of promoting the highest level of care possible. Whether on an on-going basis or in emergency situations, they have always risen

• “RN Express shows high sense of accountability and responsibility as a staffing agency. They are very professional in their dealings both to the facility staff and their staff. I have been in business with their agency for a year, through Sally Nunez and Alex Alejandrino. RN express made a difference in both my professional and personal life because I know that I can depend on them during times of crisis. They prove themselves to be dependable, resilient to the various demands of the facility and able to deliver their promises consistently; something that is often not seen in staffing agencies. With RN Express at the helm of our staffing needs, we know our patients and residents

“We are proud of where we are right now, and we plan to consistently direct our efforts in maintaining our vision and mission. We continue to work towards being #1 in delivering outstanding healthcare professionals in the industry.” “In addition, we aim to partner with a tech company to help us develop a software that will streamline our company’s process of recruitment, hiring, onboarding, maintaining of employee records, invoicing and payroll that is specific to our company’s setup,” the trio concludes.

are provided with quality and professional care and for this we know we can sleep at night.” – Randolf Palmaira, PT, MSA, LHNA, Executive Director and Administrator, Citadel Corp./The Plaza Rehab and Nursing Center, Citadel Corp. • “My business has dealt with RN Express for more than 10 years. Sally, Lea, Ms. Lucas, Nimfa and Alex—they are all very responsive to the needs of my business. RN Express nurses are of the highest quality. They are exceptionally reliable. There was a time when I needed so many MDS assessors to assist the facilities and RN Express was able to supply quality nurses. I admire the humility of the stakeholders. They have helped so many nurses and their families.” – Nemcy Cavite Duran, President/CEO, Duran Consulting Services, Inc. • “I have so many good words to say about RN Express. I am a proud RN Express nurse from the very start. I’m one of their very first nurses 10 years ago. I met the company through Alex Alejandrino, and while I was petitioned by and working fulltime in a NY hospital, I worked with RN Express per diem. They would send me to new facilities, which I love, as it helped enrich my career. The owners, Ms. Sally, Ms. Lea, and Ms. Florida, know how to take care of their nurses. They build relationships with us all—so much so that even when I got busy in my full-time job, they still treated me like family, always included me in company activities, and kept in touch the way they would with their nurses. I love how they appreciate the value that one contributes to the company. It

was my personal decision to leave a good full-time position in a hospital, but I did not think twice because I know that I have RN Express to manage my career. I have worked with other agencies per diem, so I know that RN Express can give me the long-term benefits and career growth that I am looking for. I always share this with my fellow nurses: I will only work full-time

with RN Express because they give me more than what I can get elsewhere, and the relationships you will have with the company is something that is hard to find. As a nurse, I admire their passion to help other nurses and believe in their mission, vision and advocacy.” – Rowena Alba, RN, BSN

Expanding Nursing Care to Achieve Health Equity

T

he ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has tested the prowess of the healthcare industry across the world. This highlighted the extensive need for accessible healthcare services and nursing care. A recent Harris Poll commissioned by NursesEverywhere found 87% of Americans say nurses have been indispensable during the Covid-19 pandemic. The survey also found that 89% Americans expressed the need of same high-quality care received from nurses during the pandemic should remain a national standard for all. Furthermore, the survey uncovered a high demand for nurses to address urgent societal needs related to improve nurse staffing in hospitals and nursing homes, reopening schools, providing safety in nursing homes and greater equality in healthcare including telehealth. While these may sound facts for many, only a healthcare professional would understand the burning issue underneath giving rise to health inequality. Dr Tim Raderstorf, COO of NursesEverywhere, has been on a mission to tackle this challenge through his non-profit organization. In the following interview with Dr Raderstorf, he shares the organization’s mission of making healthcare more accessible across America and his views on the need of leveraging

technology to provide quality healthcare. Below are the highlights of the interview: Please brief our audience about NursesEverywhere, its values, vision, and mission. NursesEverywhere is a voluntary nonpartisan organization dedicated to keeping everyone in America healthy and well through exceptional nursing care. Dedicated to educating people about their rights to access nursing care, our core values are Justice, Access, Respect, and Health Equity. Our founding members are internationally recognized nurses and health care leaders committed to improving health outcomes on an individual, regional, and national level. We believe everyone in America should expect and demand high quality and equitable nursing care at all levels and in all settings and that these nurses will help them achieve a greater degree of health and well-being. The health and well-being of our nation can be enhanced if more diverse nurses are available at all levels of service from the front lines to corporate, governmental, and health services board rooms, responsible for making the most of policymaking decisions.

communities speaking of their need to access meaningful ways to show gratitude for the sacrifices nurses are making during these challenging times. Our nursing colleagues are telling us that the best way to thank them is by following safe COVID-19 prevention measures. So, we created a Public Service Announcement and partnered with country duo Brown & Gray to produce a music video encouraging mask adherence and other prevention measures. Being an experienced leader, share with us your opinion on how the adoption of modern technologies in the healthcare discipline has transformed the industry and what more could be expected in the near future?

New technologies are changing healthcare, but we have not yet been able to match the rate of adoption with the rate of creation. The adoption rate in the clinical setting is mostly dependent upon the amount of behavior change the technology integration requires. The electronic health record was particularly disruptive as it required significant behavior change without providing much, if any, benefit for clinicians. Conversely, the amazing technology used to create the mRNA vaccines that are helping us adapt to the pandemic required very little change to clinical behavior. We’ve always given shots, so the delivery of this technology was no different. In the future, I expect new technologies to prioritize integration into existing clinical behavior as they look to drive adoption and increase impact. Taking into consideration, the current pandemic, and its impact on global economies, how are you driving your organization to sustain operations and ensuring the safety of your employees at the same time? The pandemic has been an exceptional catalyst for healthcare innovation. Latent technologies like telehealth that struggled to find a pathway to adoption were suddenly the gold standard of practice overnight. But most importantly a new sense of urgency has electrified healthcare, showcasing what can be possible. The key to this success will be caring for our clinicians and making sure they have the support and resources to be successful at this new pace. What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the healthcare sector?

20 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

Partner with a nurse or clinician as a co-founder from the start. A nurse founder will help you recognize problems before they arise and keep you from making mistakes that only clinical expertise can foresee. You likely have no idea how your technology will impact those at the frontlines and integrating a clinical founder will help you navigate the immense challenge of creating WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?) for the people who will determine your success. Where do you envision your organization to be in the long run and what are your future goals? NursesEverywhere is on the pathway to becoming an internationally recognized organization, with the goal of every person across the planet viewing a nurse as the linchpin to their health and wellness.

CareStaf of Dallas Extending Care Beyond Healthcare Institutions

T

here’s no doubt your employees’ good health will help you achieve better business. Just as Mark Halperin, American Journalist, has said, “Sufficient sleep, exercise, healthy food, friendship, and peace of mind are necessities, not luxuries.” The ongoing pandemic further highlighted the importance of ensuring people’s well-being while struggling for survival during difficult times. CareStaf of Dallas has been diligently helping people ensure good health by providing medical staffing and in-home care since 1996. Steve Tips, President of CareStaf of Dallas, has been ambitious about venturing into both medical staffing and in-home care. “We take to the heart the ‘care’ and ‘staff’ in everything we do. We realize the importance of matching the right caregiver to meet both the clients’ medical needs, as well as their personalities. While we put technology to use where it makes sense, we still believe in answering phone calls 24/7,” he says.

Read the following interview where Steve shared his motivation behind entering the healthcare industry and how CareStaf is aiding in making healthcare widely accessible. Please brief our audience about your company, its values, vision, and mission. CareStaf of Dallas has been providing medical staffing and private in-home care since 1996. Our vision is to give healthcare providers the quality, assurance, and flexibility they need to provide excellent patient care by providing prescreened (tested, background checked, drug screened), healthcare professionals to meet their needs. Our mission is to provide healthcare workers (RN’s, LVN’s, and CNA’s) to

Furthermore, CareStaf has proved its uniqueness in the healthcare staffing niche with the company’s Client Service Representatives (CSRs) matching the caregivers’ personality traits to best meet the clients’ needs and a full-time RN on staff for clinical concerns as well as private duty admissions.

meet the needs of both healthcare providers and individuals in our community. We provide these services with the commitment that we stand behind our obligations with no “passing the buck”. How CareStaf is impacting the global healthcare industry through its services? CareStaf venturing in both medical staffing services as well as private home care set us apart from our competitors. This often allows for better continuity from the moment care is provided. Additionally, our in-home care services allow our clients to reside in the safety and familiarity of their homes. from the concentrated populations of an assisted living or nursing home where outbreaks such as COVID-19 can spread quickly. Brief us about your journey in the healthcare sector. Both I and my wife Belinda come from families of healthcare providers. My father was an MD, and my mother was an RN. My wife’s father was an Orthodontist and his wife worked in the office along with him. Belinda and I both knew up front going into the healthcare business is a 24/7 job. It is a full-time commitment to care for people in their time of need, whatever the circumstance. Taking into consideration, the current pandemic, and its impact on global economies, how are you driving your company to sustain operations and ensuring the safety of your employees at the same time? Because of our mix of staffing and in-home care we had to change our course rapidly. We constantly monitor local, state, and CDC guidelines and implement them accordingly. Additionally, our business model changed from helping staffing clients (with COVID positive patients) to, only providing care to non-COVID patients. We walked away from a lot of business to protect the health of our in-home care, private duty clients, and front-line first responder staff. This was necessary because many of our caregivers, nurses, and CNA’s crossover from in-home care assisted living care and nursing home care, as well as other healthcare providers.

Steve Tips, President/Administrator What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the healthcare sector? It depends on the individual and how they utilize their drive, talents, and passions to help others. Some people are wired to be more handson with care, such a nurse, CNAs, PCT, MA, etc. While others are more comfortable being engaged but in a more indirect way, administrators, coordinators, etc. However, with evolving technologies such as Telehealth, individuals looking into 23 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

providing care in the future, may be able to do both. AI will dominate everyday healthcare in ways we are just beginning to realize. We need brilliant minds in the healthcare industry to make AI/human interaction as user-friendly and helpful as possible, especially with handheld devices like cell phones, tablets, etc. Most people struggle with computerized scheduling, terminology, and the ability to negotiate the ever-changing software used for their care. An

WORDS OF WORTH “First of all, we just wanted to say how much we loved & appreciated your services for my mom during her last 2 and a half weeks. Every single nurse that came was spectacular, and so caring for my mom. We could not have done it without CareStaf! We have a few Thank-You gifts that we would like to send to a few of the nurses that were especially near and dear to our family. Michelle, Meme, Brenda, and Lindzi.” – Ellen emphasis needs to be placed on this gap in service understanding and training. In the end, you have to look no further than the current HIPPA laws to see this. Additionally, people with healthcare issues still want the interaction with a skilled physician, nurse, or caregiver to be assured that they are in good hands. Look into and work for as many different types of healthcare services as you can. Then take the plunge into the field, modality, of healthcare where you can enjoy and help others with their healthcare needs. Where do you envision your organization to be in the long run and what are your future goals? I believe there will always be a need for healthcare staffing and private duty in-home care. One on one patient care is not going away anytime soon. Flexibility in workloads, location will always be a logistical challenge. After all, no one knows when they will be sick, for how long, along with how many others at the same time. CareStaf has positioned itself as a company of integrity and trust within the greater Dallas and will continue to adopt strategies that will benefit our healthcare providers and our client's health care needs well into the 22nd century.

“A great job at a difficult time. Thank you!” – Jim B. “Every aid that came was compassionate and efficient in my father’s care. My mother and I appreciate their sensitivity and willingness to do difficult jobs. We will recommend CareStaf.” – Katy K. “Every caregiver who came to aid was wonderful to my mother. It was invaluable to feel she was in trusting care since both my sister, and I have families to care for. If I need CareStaf again, and I may, I will not hesitate to call.” – Melody B. “Our family was blessed to have CareStaf assist us. We are very thankful and appreciative of all CareStaf employees.” – Debi A. “The care staff was fabulous; they met my every need. Not only did they assist me medically, but they also made me feel comfortable and were extremely caring. I felt as if it were my mom caring for me. I appreciate everything you did for me.” – Catherine B.

“Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” – Stephen Hawking

H

umans are intelligent beings. And it's our ability to adapt and evolve that has made us the superior race. Take the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, for example, scientists and research institutes successfully developed the COVID vaccine within a year of declaring a pandemic. Along with advanced medical science, technology in healthcare has played a huge role during the pandemic. When the healthcare institutes across the world were facing an enormous talent void the humanoid robots filled in to assist healthcare professionals to provide accurate and timely care to patients. From the invention of a magnifying glass in 1250 to adapting AI and Robotics to provide better care, healthcare technology has come along way. And this sure is a positive sign during the ongoing global healthcare crisis, that we can survive and evolve to this new challenge because we have before. So, this time instead of persisting over the possibilities of the post-COVID era, let'sgo back and reminisce the fast-forward history of the evolution of healthcare technology. Evolution of medical technology 1250: The first magnifying glass 26 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

The magnifying capacities of crystal chips had long been discovered. However, the world had to wait for over a hundred years when in 1250, Roger Bacon developed the first magnifying glass for scientific purposes. 1752: Flexible catheter Benjamin Franklinin 1752 developed the first flexible catheter to help his brother who had bladder stones. This device made with hinged metal parts not only made his life but many other individuals' lives easier who wassuffering froma similar condition. 1841: First surgery using anesthesia American surgeon Dr.Crawford Longcarried out the first surgery using anesthesia. However, the way anesthesia was used during the surgical procedure was a little different years ago. Dr long pressed a towel dipped in diethyl ether against the patient's face. In turn, the patient fell unconscious and the doctor then operated and removed the tumor from the patient's neck. 1874: detecting the electrical impulses in the brain In 1874, British scientist Richard Caton used a galvanometer to first detect the electrical impulses in the brains of animals. This innovation later played a huge part in developing ECGs which are commonly used by physicians today. 1903: First electrocardiogram Dr.W. Einthoven, the Netherlands-born scientist, developed the first electrocardiogram. While the device today can be easily handled by a single person, at the inception, it needed at least five operators. The device used huge electromagnets that needed a complex water-cooling system to cool down. For his invention in the medical technology field, Dr. W. Einthoven was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1924. The 1970s: First CT scanner and NMR technique Fats-forward to 1971 when Dr. G. Hounsfield invented and used the first CT scanner on the patient admitted to a London hospital.Dr. G. Hounsfield was awarded a Nobel Prize for this fascinating invention, which has been a boon in medical science.

between the normal tissue and cancerous tissue which played a crucial role in cancer treatments later such as radiotherapy, chemo, and pills. Medical technology in the 21st century Since the start of the 21st century, medical technology has been taking huge strides. In 2000, for example, scientists researchedthe human genome using sophisticated medical equipment. In 2004, the first prosthetic knee was developed by Ossur Corporation which could easily adapt to changes in the user's walking style. The artificial liver developed by Nico Forraz and Colin McGucklin using stem cells in 2006 led to a strong foundation to better analyze and treat liver conditions. Fast-forward to 2019 when the rising strain on the healthcare industry encouraged AI and robotics space to step in. And we saw the results in 2020 when the humanoid robots joined the staff at several healthcare institutes across the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth: Future of healthcare technology “Necessity – the mother of innovation.” – Plato, Athenian philosopher The necessity of staying home and maintaining social distance during the COVID-19 pandemic charged the digital revolution in every sector from essentials and retail to healthcare. Moreover, with the rising COVID patients and lack of manpower and facilities like PPE kits, telehealth became more necessary to assess and treat patients at a certain level. Compact portable devices ideal for home use is another trend on the rise in the medical technology field. This will help individuals keep a tab of their health and contact a healthcare professional when needed.

These booming medical technologies are leading the future of healthcare to the much-needed and much-awaited period of accessible and affordable healthcare. Just like many other issues such as sustainability happened this year, this will In 1978, Raymond Damadian patented his technique of also be a healthcare blessing for humankind in disguise asa using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to differentiate COVID-19 pandemic. - Vrushali R. 28 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

your own

healthcare staffing Business

40 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

DIY Business

T

he rising cases of COVID19 in 2021 have again started straining the healthcare sector with a lack of facilities and manpower. On the other hand, people across diverse sectors and industries are losing jobs in the second wave of coronavirus. If only there existed a bridge to fill the gap of the surging demand of healthcare professionals and a hoard of job aspirants entering the market? Although the lack of talent in the healthcare space has only been highlighted now, it has been a problem for healthcare institutes across the world and will soon be a burning issue due to the rising population. The staffing sector, however, has started to notice the gap and has taken major steps with many healthcare staffing organizations specializing in recruiting hospital staff, matching the right caregivers, and travel nurses. But the demand is huge, the problems are unique, and so is the need for more staffing agencies dedicated to the healthcare industry. This, for aspiring entrepreneurs, is an excellent opportunity to take a leap and make an impact with their unique and effective healthcare staffing business.

41 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

But what it takes to start your own healthcare staffing business? Let's find out. #1 Tackle a pain point. We all have seen or closely experienced the pain and loss of loved ones. The panic of emergencies, the pressure of finding the right and timely care. Most of us have also seen the skills and compassionate medical professionals or caregivers possess and use to treat patients. What was the pain point that affected you the most? Or was it thecompassion of the healthcare staff that touched you deeply? Find out your pain point or mystic moment and make this the core of your business. #2 Identify unique advantage. Since the rise of the travel nursing industry in the 1980s, the healthcare staffing space has evolved to keep up with the needs and the demands of the healthcare industry. However, there remain flaws and issues in the traditional industry such as skills mismatch, employee burnout, and cordial and affordable care on clients' side have left a lot of room for new businesses to venture. Identifying and establishing your unique policies, values, and unique services will give you a competitive advantage right from the beginning. #3 Data-driven and skilled approach Let's face it, the experience might give you a good start but alone it won't take you any farther down the success road. To succeed in business and make a mark in a niche market, one needs to follow a data-driven approach to understand the core issues of your target audience and have skilled expertise to solve those issues with innovative and practical solutions.

#4 Invest in the right technology. Technology has long changed the face of healthcare. Don't you agree? Think about how scientists and research institutes have successfully developed the COVID vaccine within a year. From diagnosing disease to treatment through medication or surgery and even post-medical care, technology is playing a huge role. It's essential for healthcare and its supporting industries to adapt and invest in the right technology to fast-track the right treatment and maintain a low casualty rate. However, here you may not always need to invest in your own innovation, but you can stay ahead of the competition by using the existing technology. Think LinkedIn Recruiter Seats, for example. It is a great way to get exposure right alongside your competition right from the start. #5 Wait for the right time. Owning a business seems always exciting. But not everyone has the knack of pulling it off successfully. While there can be many reasons for failing in business, starting too early is one of them. Even when you know that you want people to know you as an entrepreneur, you should take time to lay a strong foundation. Gather skills, experience, and make contacts. Feel the essence of the business and market and then plunge into the ocean of possibilities with all your might. - Vrushsli R.

While starting a business is tough, maintaining success by retaining skilled employees is tougher. Want a tip on how to retain your skilled employees? Don't just limit your data acquisition and analysis to your consumers, apply it to your employees as well to understand and act upon their needs and desires to perform better. 42 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

Kavin Group

Aiding the Healthcare Space with Skilled Workforce

T

he ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has tested the prowess of every sector across the globe, especially healthcare. Not only the technology but the healthcare space highly demanded skilled staff and caregivers to continue to provide care while being cordial. During these tough times, staffing agencies like Kavin Group has been aiding healthcare organizations with their services, providing temporary as well permanent staffing, catering to a diverse clientele.

Steve Vincic, President and Managing Partner at Kavin Group further shares how the company has managed to be a trusted partner for its clients. “Our approach is about finding and working through the right solution for our customers. We take pride in adapting to our customers’ needs, this is what makes Kavin Group a great partner for many companies.” This approach has further led Kavin Group to pave several milestones including being recognized as among 21 Fastest Growing Companies in Canada for three years in sales issued by Globe and Mail. The company has also been nominated for several Chamber of Commerce awards over the few years. Adapting automation one step at a time Technology advancement in the past decade has affected every sector including the staffing industry. The staffing industry has undergone significant change in the last few years.

AI as with any industry has entered the staffing space as well. Now many organizations have started to automate their processes and business operations. However, Steve shares a caution about adapting automated processes. “There is a place for AI in the staffing industry. However, staffing business is built and centered around people. Automating this process too early may be detrimental in the engagement of the potential candidates and ultimate loss of revenue,” he says. Balancing business and team safety during the crisis The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced businesses to change their conventional ways of handling businesses and adapt to the new normal. While survival became the instinct for many organizations it also put forth the concern of employee safety. Steve shares how Kavin Group has managed to balance on both fronts. “We have been working closely with our partners to ensure we have adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on hand,” he says. “We stay in constant contact with our deployed staff. We never compromise safety for our staff and a safe and healthy work environment,” Steve further adds. Wise words When asked about advising the budding entrepreneurs wishing to set foot in the staffing industry, Steve was quick to share his wisdom. 44 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

He says, “Data, Action, and Sustainment are three critical factors entrepreneurs need to understand and execute. These are learned skills and constantly need to be built into your daily cadence.” Steve further elaborated these three aspects for the aspiring entrepreneurs in the staffing industry. Data • Understand your market, roadblocks, and challenges. • Understand and analyze ‘what if’ scenarios. • Perform your market research – analyze your business model from a business as well as client perspective. • Find the gap in the market and think about how you can fill it. Action • Formulate a plan to put into action. • Thoroughly analyze your scenarios and make sure you have an action plan for each potential issue. • Train your team, let them fully understand what and why you took certain action. • Seek advice from your staff, they are the best and most experienced at the task. You are only a coach to put them on the right path. Sustainment • Audit your process. • Put measurables in place to capture your deviation from the defined processes. • Train your staff to understand and recognize the deviation in the process.

MSG Staffing Improving Lives, One Assignment at a Time “Burnout suggests that the problem resides within the individual, who is in some way deficient. It implies that the individual lacks the resources or resilience to withstand the work environment.” – Dr. Wendy Dean, Co-founder at Moral Injury of Healthcare

E

veryone faces burnout, even the Healthcare Professionals. And the ongoing pandemic has further highlighted the issue for the individuals to understand and experience. Healthcare Professionals have strong moral compasses. They are resourceful, resilient, and passionate about caring for others. They sacrifice time with their family, time for themselves, and even their health. Right now, 60% of Healthcare Professionals say they are facing burnout. Unfortunately, it gets worse. When HCP are unable to follow their moral compass due to constraints outside of their control, they suffer 'Moral Injury'. While many have been appreciating the efforts and sacrifices of healthcare professionals especially during the pandemic, very few could empathize. However, CEO Jamal Mahijibhai not only hadto face burnout during his working as a registered nurse but he decided to aid his fellow healthcare professionals to cure moral injury through his organization, MSG Staffing. Since its inception in 2005, MSG

Staffing has been helping healthcare professionals and clients to connect for per-diem assignments, long-term assignments, direct hire for facilities, and private pay care 24/7 for homecare. “We offer a cure for Moral Injury by effectively filling the staffing shortages that cause it. And we cure by providing the right flexible opportunities, so HCPs do not have to sacrifice one to get the other,” Jamal explains. “If that doesn't impact the global healthcare industry, I don't know what will,” he further says. Read the following interview to know how Jamal's personal experience as a registered nurse led him to bring change in the healthcare sector through MSG Staffing. Brief our audience about MSG Staffing, its values, vision, and mission. MSG Staffing's mission is to improve lives, one assignment at a time.We do that by giving reliable Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) access to opportunities they'll enjoy. We've transformed the job-hunting process into a simple, fun, and result-focused that brings fulfillment to people's lives. This ensures patients receive outstanding care, our clients receive the help they require, and our HCPs succeed both professionally and financially. Our vision is to dominate the local staffing market with reliable HCPs. I

want MSG Staffing to impact tens of thousands of HCPs, so they can impact thousands of facilities and hundreds of thousands if not millions of patients. One local market at a time. Brief us about how you have set yourself apart from the competition through your expertise in healthcare staffing? It's the people we hire, and how we train and develop them according to our values, systems, and processes that sets us apart from the competition. We built MSG Staffing to bring fulfillment to people's lives, through a team that takes care and support seriously. Sadly, there is a lot of HCP turn-over in our industry. Our business significantly minimizes this turnover because we gain deep insight into our client's needs, wants, and desires. We then analyze that information using our innovative process to predict the outcome. If a poor outcome is predicted, we don't proceed. Otherwise, we engage decisively, and we don't stop until the promise made is delivered. This is how we win, one assignment at a time. Some staffing companies see a placement as their finish line, but for us, that's more of a starting point. We increase communication and solicit feedback from HCPs and client facilities after a successful placement. This allows us to plan for back-to-back opportunities while maintaining our focus on one assignment at a time.

Brief us about your journey in the healthcare industry. I started my healthcare career as a laundry attendant. From there I became a residential counselor, nurse aide, and finally a registered nurse. I wanted to work while I was in school so I could pay my bills, but I also had to provide exceptional care to my patients. Providing exceptional care was a core value. There were times when unreliable coworkers would bail on their shifts, slack off at work, or neglect to provide care at my standard (which I assumed we all shared). It's amazing how powerful the impact a few can have on the many. Call-outs made it very difficult for me to give patients more than a minimum level of care. I had a choice; I could either work hours that fit my schedule knowing there wasn't enough staff to properly support all the patients, or I could work inconvenient hours and pick up extra shifts to benefit the patients. My paradox was I had to choose one or the other: do what's right for me or do what's right for my patients. Both were a bad choice because I valued both. That's the 'Moral Injury' dilemma many HCPs face today. My history has greatly impacted how my company functions. Today, I solve for others the problem I faced in my 20s. Healthcare Providers should not have to sacrifice their values to do their job. We solve this with flexibility and transparency. When HCPs have access to thousands of opportunities, they can find the ones that will fit their schedules. We ask clients enough

questions so we can tell HCPs what to expect before they accept an assignment. When there are fewer surprises, there are fewer call-outs. When there are fewer call-outs, patients receive better care. When patients receive better care, my clients flourish. Job satisfaction skyrockets when HCPs are paid well, get to do meaningful work, and have the flexibility to have a personal life. Being an experienced leader, share with us your opinion on how the adoption of modern technologies in the healthcare discipline has transformed the industry and what more could be expected in the near future? The adoption of modern technologies can revolutionize any industry. The speed of change and improvement only moves faster and faster, and I believe that trend will continue. But adopting technology does nothing without a unified vision and a system of people behind it. Just look at the Coronavirus Pandemic. If a year and a half ago you had told me our governing regulatory institutions would work with not one, but three separate pharmaceutical companies to bring three vaccines to stave off the same virus - I would have laughed out loud!

operations and ensuring the safety of your employees at the same time? We pivoted just like the rest of the world. We increased PPE measures for all our Healthcare Professionals, utilized the paycheck protection program to the best of our ability, and have successfully shifted from an office environment to a virtual one. At the end of the day, we are in the recruitment business. The MSG leadership team made sure long before the pandemic was ever an issue, that we recruited the right people to work for us. My employees are reliable. They are the kind of people who hate mailing it in. They take great personal satisfaction in striving for excellence, which is why they work here. Truth be told, they are the reason we were able to do so well in 2020 and the reason I'm confident we'll continue that trend in 2021. What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the healthcare sector? Do enough research to make sure the solution you offer solves an existing problem that keeps your clients up at night. Also, don't doubt yourself. Too many people never start because the voice in their head holds them back.

Technology requires vision, systems, and people to elicit change. We are at the start of that now, and I expect that trend to continue.

Where do you envision your organization to be in the long run and what are your future goals? Since 2005, we have improved the lives of thousands of Healthcare Professionals by placing them in assignments that fit their lives both personally and professionally.

Taking into consideration, the current pandemic, and its impact on global economies, how are you driving your company to sustain

Stability Healthcare Bringing Transparency in Healthcare Staffing

T

he ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has put the healthcare industry into a whirlwind. While the vastly increasing COVID cases were a huge concern, the lack of facilities and healthcare staff to aid COVID patients was another tough task governments and hospitals had to deal with. This surely put a strain on existing healthcare forces, which further highlighted the lack of transparency in the healthcare field. Stability Healthcare, founded in 2009 has been providing pay-package transparency to travel nurses since 2017, with the inception of its technology platform. The company’s unique platform allows nurses to book their assignments based on their needs and preferences with complete transparency.

Jason Casani, CEO of Stability Healthcare, addresses this platform as ‘Airbnb for travel nursing’. “Our recruiter-free job search platform gives travel nurses complete control over their assignments and pay, before speaking with a recruiter,” he says, “Stability's recruiters and nurse advocates provide concierge support from application to placement and throughout their employment with Stability.” Read the following interview to know how Jason’s personal experiences led him to venture into healthcare staffing and how Stability Healthcare is making a mark in the healthcare sector with its unique services. What services/solutions does Stability Healthcare provide and

how have these made an impact on the industry and your clients? At present, we are singularly focused on Travel Nursing. However, our unique technology platform is transferable to other Healthcare market segments such as Per Diem, Locum, and Allied. Additionally, our technology has been purposefully built to become a SaaS solution for other healthcare staffing companies with the launch of our first product to be announced later this year. How did you venture into the healthcare industry? I began my career in Technology Staffing in 1993. In 2008, I spent countless hours at USC's Keck Hospital with my mom during her battle against cancer. When she passed away in late 2008, my interactions and appreciation for the nurses and doctors who cared for her, changed me. It was at that moment; I knew I needed to be involved in an industry that touched people's lives. In 2009, I left behind my 15-year career to start Stability Healthcare. Being an experienced leader, share with us your opinion on how the adoption of modern technologies in the healthcare discipline has transformed the industry and what more could be expected in the future? There is mistrust within the travel nursing industry between companies and the nurses regarding their pay and assignments. While transparency isn't the norm in the recruitment industry, it's an evolution that will be expected with the accessibility of information 54 | March 2021 | www.insightscare.com

and expectations of consumers today. From Airbnb to Amazon, people search based on price and feedback from the experience of their peers. Stability Healthcare's job search technology platform allows nurses to browse thousands of up-to-date jobs with transparent pay and location details. It provides nurses complete control over their assignments and pays while providing them world-class support from application to placement and throughout their employment with Stability. Taking into consideration, the current pandemic, and its impact on global economies, how are you driving your organization to sustain operations and ensuring the safety of your employees at the same time? In 2016, Stability Healthcare committed to a fundamental shift away from traditional recruitment. Our goal was to create a platform that automated manual processes and create efficiencies that allowed our team to deliver best-in-class service to our customers (Nurses and Hospitals) remotely. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the transition was seamless and allowed our organization to sustain operations and grow from 15M in 2019 to tracking 85M for 2021. What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the healthcare staffing niche? While there are low barriers to entry with the healthcare staffing niche, it's one of the most labor-intensive and regulated market segments. If you're passionate about healthcare, it's

immensely rewarding, but understand the costs and industry requirements needed before making the jump. How do you envision scaling Stability Healthcare’s operations and offerings in 2021? Our current infrastructure and technology platform will allow us to more than double in 2021, without adding any significant costs. Additionally, enhancements currently underway, will allow us to continue to scale as fast as the market will allow well beyond 2021.

If you're passionate about healthcare, it's immensely rewarding, but understand the costs and industry requirements needed before making the jump.

Exhibiting excellence From Nursing Staff Jason Casani “I recently completed my first contract with CEO Stability Health, and so far, it has been the BEST experience I have had as a travel nurse. If I had to pick out the best things about my experience, it would be the support from my recruiter and the layout of the website. It made understanding the pay packages a total breeze. Happy to continue working with them!” – Daniel H “So far, my experience with them was astounding, and my recruiter was swift with getting me an offer with my first travel assignment with them (I got an offer within the same day of my application). I got paid right on time. I will definitely recommend Stability Healthcare.” – Aldohn D From Hospitals “Stability has been a pleasure to work with; their help during our COVID crisis has been tremendous. This team is so easy to work with, their quick response and work on compliance are very helpful especially with our growing need, and the high-quality staff we receive makes our job to staff our units much easier. I look forward to our continued partnership with such a quality agency like Stability Healthcare.” – Sara, Adventist Health “Stability Healthcare's ability to deliver quality nurses in a very short time has been a tremendous benefit to our company's clients. During a year in which the pandemic saw our Hospitals demanding experienced nurses in hours or days and not weeks, Stability stood out as a quality supplier. We look forward to working with them for many years to come.” – Victoria, Healthcare Workforce Logistics & Solutions
