Workplacementalhealthisapressingandgrowingissue, requiringimmediateattentionandaction.Traditionalwork teamenvironments,structuresandculturesareincreasingly recognizedasfactorsexacerbatingmentalill-health. Employeesatalllevelsareconcernedaboutthe consequencesofdiscussingtheirmentalhealthatwork. Theysilencethemselvesduetofearsofdiscrimination, harassmentandlosingtheirjobs.

Inrecentyears,therehasbeenstrongevidenceofarisein mentalillnessintheworking-agedemographic.Numerous globaltrendshavecontributed,suchastheCOVID-19 pandemic,technologicaldisruptionandthechangingnature ofwork.Whileworkisourlifeline,unsafeworkpractices haveamplifiedanxiety,stress,depressionandsocial isolation.Longworkinghourswithexcessivedemands,job insecurity,lowjobcontrol,prejudiceanddiscrimination, inequality,andmultipleotherriskshaveallcontributedto increasedwork-relatedmentalillness.

Wespendonaverageapproximately90,000hoursworking overourlifetime.Butdespiteworkinginteams,33%of adultsfacelonelinessandpsychologicalisolation.As84%

ofsuicidesoccurintheworking-agedemographic,itisvital thatwecombatthesetrendsdirectlywithinourworkplaces.

Inadditiontothedevastatingtollthatmentaldisorderstake onindividuals,familiesandcommunities,depressionand anxietysignificantlyimpacttheglobaleconomy As highlightedbytheWHO,theimpactofmentalhealthonthe economycostsanestimatedUS$1trillionannually Furthermore,aroundtheworld,12billionworkingdaysare lostyearlybecauseofmentalill-health.IntheAustralian contextin2020,mentalhealthconcernswerethemost commonreasonforloweredproductivity,impacting3in5 workers.

In2020,Ico-foundedTheUnitedProject,aregistered charitablefoundationandnon-profit,toaddresstherisein mentalillnessinworkplaceandteamenvironments.After workingasaseniorexecutiveforprominenttechnologyand managementconsultingfirms,myformercareerendedin 2015duetomymentalhealthdeteriorating.Mybreakdown ledtoaneventualdiagnosisofchronictreatment-resistant majordepression.Thetollhasimpactedeveryareaofmy life,includingmyself-esteem,identityandvalues.Itisan ongoingchallengethatIwillstrugglewithfortherestof mylife.

Thesilverliningisthatmylivedexperiencesinspiredmeto contributetowardsasocietalissuethatneedssignificant improvement.Iwantedtotransformthisnegative experienceintosomethingpositive,thatwouldbenefit others.Severalyearsago,IpartneredwithGregMuller,and weestablishedTheUnitedProjectwiththeintentionof reducingtheincidentsandseverityofillmentalhealthand reducingthesuiciderate,globally.

Wequicklyidentifiedthattoenacttangibleandmacro-level change,weneededtothinkdifferentlyabouttheproblem. Toreducethenumberofemployeeswithdeteriorating mentalhealth,itwasnecessarytofocusonprevention throughearlydetection.Weshiftedourfocustoward creatinganinterventionmodelsothatpeoplearesupported wellbeforetheyenduretheworsteffectsofmentalillhealthatwork.
