L
atest estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau state that there are over 50 million senior citizens currently living in the united states of America. They make up 16.5% of the total American population. This growing proportion of the country's elderly demands elderly care or eldercare, including assisted living, longterm care, home care, hospice care, nursing home care, and adult daycare. Because as the age advances, people find that their lives are hanging by a thin edge of a gradually deteriorating health cliff, always on the verge of falling off in the ditch of issues. And in modern times, many people are finding it impossible to take their elderly' intrinsic care, including their heaths. Many reasons include adverse economic conditions, fastpaced lives, hectic livelihood struggles, increasing social aloofness, and heightened eldercare costs, including Medicare. And these pandemic times, senior citizens find it harder to cope with chaotic situations. Eldercare highlights senior citizenry's personal and social needs who want to age in a dignified way. But they also require assistance with their daily activities and healthcare. The 10 Best Senior Care Franchises to Open in 2021
1Heart Caregiver Services Providing with a Heart that Cares
C
hildhood and old age are the two most vulnerable periods in an individual’s life where they need special care. While the former is always in the limelight, the latter gets less attention often times. After surpassing the adult age, people start heading towards their post-retirement days, where they are physically weak. They usually are low with their physical strengths as compared to their early life. When age progresses, various health issues arise, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart ailments, etc. In addition, people also feel lonely due to the busy schedules of their younger family members who are in the working age. It affects them emotionally and makes them feel neglected. In this vulnerable age, elders seek for unconditional emotional and physical support to spend the rest of their days. To provide for this delicate care of old people in their
last days, 1Heart Caregiver Services started its journey with an advanced operating system. 1Heart is a nonmedical home care company providing professional, reliable, and trained caregivers to families, senior living facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals. Redefining Excellence 1Heart is a brand built on a very simple yet powerful concept: ‘All it takes is one heart that cares.’ The company believes that a single compassionate individual can positively impact the life of a senior and improve their wellbeing and caregivers, adhering to core values of ‘Excellence, Integrity and Heart’ for the clients. Every family 1Heart serves has a dedicated Client Care Manager, who makes sure that the needs of the care recipient are met in excellence. 1Heart’s ongoing training for its employees at 1Heart Caregiver University also
ensures that the caregivers are trained and prepared for the requirements of their assigned cases. The company also executes its health education advocacy by providing health education and wellness lectures like Brain Fitness Education sessions, Neurotics brain exercises, ‘fall prevention’ awareness lectures, and other wellness activities in partnership with the senior living communities. Inspiring Leadership The Founder, Belina Calderon-Nernberg, immigrated from the Philippines to the US in 1991. For more than a decade, she worked for a cellular phone retailer in Encino, CA, until she realized that going into business for herself would be the best way to achieve her dream of financial freedom. In 2001, she started a placement agency for skilled professionals, which became popular and successful in LA County. Before long, her clients began asking her for help in finding caregivers for their parents. Seeing the growing demand for care by the aging population in the US, Belina started Caregiver Services, an in-home care agency, in 2004. Ten years later, the company started offering franchise opportunities to those who wished to carry the brand of 1Heart Caregiver Services. Overcoming Adversities Talking about the challenges imposed by the pandemic, Belina shares, “One of the things that this pandemic has reminded us of is our mortality. No one is exempted from the risks that the virus could give us when infected. It has also shown us that our seniors who are at higher risk need to be protected. Because of that, despite the lockdowns, our business has continued to grow and flourish. In-home care
proved to be an essential business that is needed more than ever.” The company went through some operational challenges when the lockdowns were first imposed, and the infection rate was high. Their priority was to ensure that company’s caregivers were protected as well as the seniors they were serving. So, the management quickly implemented safety measures such as providing PPEs to its caregivers and clients, as well as implementing mandatory training on COVID-19 and taking care of COVID patients. “There is an increase in the demand for in-home care, especially for seniors who were locked down during the pandemic. The year 2020 gave the whole 1Heart franchise

“If you don’t have the compassion to help seniors, this is not the business for you. Before starting this business, study the industry, research the competition, and decide whether you want to do this by yourself or go with a trusted brand,” advised Belina. The management is of the opinion that the big advantage of going into a franchise business with a good brand image and success record is following a proven and tested business model. One does not need to reinvent the wheel while they can still apply the creativity and managerial skills in growing the 1Heart brand in the local area. Turning the Page
group a stable 24% growth compared to the previous year’s revenue performance,” said Belina. Adapting to the New Normal The senior care industry is a burgeoning industry and will continue to thrive as the baby boomers start going into their golden years, where they will need care. It is not even officially post-pandemic, yet it is visible that how the supply of caregivers is not able to meet the demand for it. 1Heart is adapting to the ‘new normal’ by building a strong digital brand, utilizing the internet in creating an effective consumer awareness program. The company continues to help franchisees build a strong balance on different functions of the business, focused on sales and marketing, operations, and finance, through its 1Heart Business Academy, where they carry out training sessions through webinars, workshops as well as field coaching.
For the year 2021, 1Heart’s corporate agency is already showing significant growth of 34% compared to last year. To date, the total franchise group will end the year with 97% growth in total annual revenue compared to last year annual revenue. Team 1Heart will have 6 new franchise locations for year 2021 with other pending franchise applications still under the franchise step process for company approval. The company recently concluded 1Heart Awards Gala where top franchise performers were awarded special recognition and honored 40 other awardees in different franchise locations inspiring all Managers, staff, and caregivers worthy of recognition. This year, 1Heart Caregiver Services is implementing the utilization of new platforms to track financial performance/comparisons and the gauging of service quality assurance through capable third-party affiliates. “That way, as we continue to grow, we would still be capable of maintaining high-quality standards,” said Belina.
Time is changing, and the circumstances created by the recent pandemic have made it imperative for 1Heart to find new ways to harness technology to improve its operations and give the best service to the families it serves. It was happening across the nation among all healthcare providers. The company has adapted to the changing market and its client’s needs by utilizing a technology platform that enables the system to continuously enhance scheduling, staffing requirements, monitoring of client’s ‘Quality of Life’ progress, caregiver’s tasks performed, and online care academy training.

Essential Qualities that Make an
Exceptional Caregiver
for the Elderly
T
here are several qualities good or bad, but they define our character, personality, and state what kind of human beings we are. Just like our qualities define us as human beings, there are a few qualities, that define a particular person as an exceptional caregiver, especially when there are elderly people involved in the situation and assisting them in their tasks, taking care of their medicines and taking good care of their important necessities. Let us explore the essential human qualities that make an exceptional caregiver for the elderly.

Empathetic Care
21| November 2021|www.insightscare.com
Ÿ
Being Responsible.
Ÿ
A responsible caregiver turns out to be a mindful and conscious person who eventually maintains and look forward to taking good care of his clients. Every caregiver has a specific task, but a responsible caregiver not only executes that task but also steps in and responds to assist other needs, without any hesitation. A responsible caregiver will always be alert and execute his duties properly on time. Ÿ
Every caregiver works and develops his skillset to work properly and learns to adapt to different scenarios according to the need of his client. Whenever the client asks him to change the course, with an additional set of requirements, the caregiver should have the ability to execute these requirements, suggested by his client. A flexible mindset is an asset for any caregiver because it helps to quickly adapt to the new working style as the client's requirements won't stay the same.
Being Professional.
Professionalism plays a vital role in a caregiving profession involving manners, clean and neat appearance, respect for the client and always being humble and polite, when communicating, especially with elderly personals.
Flexibility is also an ability to respond to different personalities and adapt himself to his clients. Ÿ
Another aspect of being professional is setting better boundaries that creates a bond with the client, treating each other just like family members. Ÿ
Working with Patience.
Taking care of elderly people can be a frustrating task, sometimes, which may lead to losing the temper, or anything could go wrong if the caregiver lost his or her patience. So, a caregiver who controls his patience even in tough situations and doesn't get frustrated while working and doesn't get panic even if something goes wrong in an urgent situation and keeps working calmy, taking good care of his client is an important quality that defines the person is a good caregiver. Ÿ
Working with Flexibility.
Balancing the Optimism.
A sense of optimism is assuming the success of the service for a client. The expression of optimism will differ with each caregiver, but the emotions behind it will be the same. This is especially important in situations, where the client is dependent upon the caregiver. Optimism is also a necessary quality to enhance functioning and encourage any person with an attitude of, "I can do it". The caregiver can keep himself motivated and focused while working with his client. No one is a born perfect caregiver. However, any person who is constantly working and improving these essential qualities with dedication will turn any person into an exceptionally good caregiver for the elderly.
Maintaining Empathy. Abhishek Joshi
Empathy is an important human emotion that plays a role to understand the feelings of another person. Without empathy, it is very difficult and challenging to connect with another person and understand if that person is going through tough situations. Elderly people need someone that can understand their emotions, or they need good listeners to spend their quality time. A good caregiver will always empathise with these feelings and emotions which eventually develop a good and a strong friendly bond with elderly people, fostering a better and trustworthy relationship with elderly people, making them feel safe and secure and they will be able to spend a good time with their caregiver.

Caring Transitions knows how to move 50 years’ worth of memories with expert care.
The 10 Best Senior Care Franchises to Open in 2021
A Compassionate Companion to Make Smooth Life Transitions
H
ave you ever wondered what your plans are for the evening of your life? What will you do in your leisure time after your retirement? Everyone passes through the transitional phases of their lives, carrying some beautiful moments with counterbalancing bitter ones. The loss of a loved one or to relocate can be a challenging phase to go through. Though there are unpleasant incidents in the journey of life, we still manage to overcome them with our close ones. The most delightful life transitions happen when they involve unconditional care and compassion. To help senior individuals make these important transitions in their life smoothly, Caring Transitions rose to the occasion. From sorting through years of memories, Caring Transitions have witnessed the smiles on older faces. In the following interview, Ray Fabik, the Brand President of Caring Transitions talks about the exemplary care services that the company has been providing since its inception and how it’s impacting the industry as a whole. Please brief our audience about your company, its values, and the key aspects of its stronghold within the senior care services industry. Caring Transitions is a nationally recognized franchise that specializes in senior relocation and transition services. Caring Transitions provides customers with helpful moves, estate sales, rightsizing, and transitions through its 231
locations across the United States, all of which are owned and run by Certified Relocation and Transition Specialists. This includes expert assistance as well as a well-executed transition plan that starts with sorting personal possessions and continues through packing, unpacking, resettling, and selling items to the final clearing and cleaning of the property. Tell us more about the services that make your company stand out from the competition? There are a lot of companies that know how to move your ‘stuff’, but Caring Transitions knows how to move 50 years’ worth of memories with expert care. Our owners are committed to providing the highest level of service to senior clients and their families. With CTBIDS (online auction platform), our owners can completely liquidate an estate without searching for a third party to handle the sale. This benefits both the Caring Transitions owner and their clients by eliminating the hassle of contracting with another company and by eliminating any extra fees paid to a third party. As a nationally recognized brand, our Caring Transitions owners can build referral partnerships with their local senior care facilities, real estate agents, and attorneys to create repeatable revenue streams. Ray, brief us about you and your journey in the transition care industry.

Find a business you are passionate about and that provides a much-needed service.
I have been the Brand President of Caring Transitions since February 2019. I started my career in retail leadership and moved into the senior care industry in 2014. During my training as VP of Operations for an in-home care company, I spent time in the field directly providing care for some of the clients. I found that I truly had a passion for serving this part of the population and gained a greater appreciation for what families are going through as their loved one’s age. There is a large industry devoted to senior care, but there are very few companies within that industry that provide the vital transition management services that Caring Transitions provide. I was drawn to lead this particular franchise because of the need for its services and the type of franchise owners it attracts - entrepreneurs who want a profitable business but who also want to support the seniors in their community. What is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the global healthcare sector, and how has your company fared during the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns? Caring Transitions is a pandemic-resistant business, as our services are needed regardless of the state of the economy or pandemic-related business shut-downs. The population continues to age, and the need to move senior parents into an assisted living or long-term care facility has not gone away. Also, many families have chosen to move their loved ones out of these senior living facilities during this time, creating even more demand for senior relocation services.
The pandemic put Caring Transitions owners in the position to win market share away from traditional moving companies that don’t have a nationally recognized brand name or a reputation for strictly following health and safety protocols. Although all Caring Transitions territories are locally owned and operated, the power of national brand recognition has been a tremendous benefit during this time. Additionally, the demand for senior relocation assistance, particularly getting a home ready to sell quickly, has increased due to the residential real estate boom. What could take families (especially those living several hours away) weeks to accomplish can be handled in a matter of days by the experienced local Caring Transitions teams. What is your opinion on the necessity for healthcare service providers to align their offerings with modern technological developments, especially when it comes to catering to the changing patient preferences and needs? Caring Transitions has embraced technological advances when it comes to safely serving its clients and their communities. Not only has the use of CTBIDS (online estate sale platform) increased dramatically but also the ability to use technology to hold remote consultations with prospective clients and touchless in-person estate sales has allowed seniors and their families to remain socially distanced and safe during the pandemic. I expect this trend to continue even after the pandemic ends. Families living several hours from their aging loved ones will have the option to meet remotely to discuss the transition process, and hosting estate sales online has the potential to substantially increase revenue from each sale. Many seniors are counting on the income from the sale of their belongings to help fund their move into a senior care facility, so the increased online visibility and resulting selling prices of their items is a major benefit to hiring a Caring Transitions team. In your opinion, what could be the future of the senior care services sector post the pandemic? And how are you strategizing your company’s operations for that future? The senior care services industry will continue to thrive post-pandemic. Members of the Baby Boomer generation are hitting retirement age at the rate of over 10,000 people per day. As I described in my previous answer, our post-pandemic strategy, specifically when it comes to
26| November 2021|www.insightscare.com
embracing technology, will not need to change much. Instead, we will continue to build on what we have learned about the benefits of leveraging technology to provide a variety of tools for our franchise owners and their clients. Later this spring, CTBIDS Next Generation will launch. This is an enhanced version of the original platform that will be better able to handle the increased traffic to the site and provide a more seamless user experience. As an established leader, what would be your advice to the budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts aspiring to venture into the senior care services sector? The senior service industry presents countless opportunities to successfully open and scale a business. There is great value in considering a franchise opportunity as opposed to starting your own service business from the ground up. When doing this, you can draw on the years of experience and the proven systems and processes that the franchisor provides. This will allow you to focus your time and energy toward running the business rather than designing the business. Another important factor to consider is the difference between a senior services business that provides direct care versus a business that provides other vital but less regulated
services. Caring Transitions falls into this category as it is far less regulated than an in-home care business. Finally, find a business you are passionate about, and that provides a much-needed service. Many Caring Transitions franchise owners were drawn to this brand because they had experienced the stress of moving an aging loved one without assistance. How do you envision scaling your company’s operations in 2021? One of the most important initiatives in 2021 and beyond will be to grow the footprint of the Caring Transitions brand nationwide. Not only will this benefit the organization as a whole, but it will also benefit individual franchise owners and their clients by supporting end-to-end relocation services for long-distance moves. Our Caring Transitions owners will be able to work together to provide all the sorting, packing, estate sale, and clean-up services at the first location and then provide trusted unpacking and resettlement services at the new home. This is a strong selling point when our franchise owners are speaking with potential clients and their families as it eliminates the hassle of looking for two different companies to help with the move.

Franchising Business is a Popular

f you're reading this, you're probably aware that McDonald's is the world's largest fast-food restaurant chain. But have you ever considered how it happened? It was the natural result of McDonald's franchise-based business strategy. Franchisees own and run more than 80% of the company's restaurants globally. When a person enters a franchise business, he gradually gets access to the credentials of that brand or the company with permission to sell its products within the mentioned location in that specific area. This gradually decreases the franchise owner's efforts by avoiding the heavy task of promoting the brand, which most new company start-ups encounter in the early stages after starting that firm. Capital, speed of expansion with low risk and effort, motivated management, and many more benefits are the key benefits for any firm or individual entering the franchise industry. Let us explore and comprehend.
31| November 2021|www.insightscare.com
“Why is franchising a popular business model and becoming a boundless business?" Ÿ
Capital.
The major reason that small or new start-ups fail is a lack of funding or access to financing over a longer period since the business's establishment. Franchising provides an alternative to capital acquisitions, and most companies are turning to franchising since it allows them to expand without the risk of debt or the expense of equity. The franchise owner signs the legal terms and conditions and agrees to different contracts that eventually allow him to expand with no financial responsibilities, eliminating risks and being restricted solely to the cash invested in the franchise.
day operations of the individual franchise units. Franchising allows you to focus your attention on the large picture of that specific firm by reducing duties such as hiring, supervision, and management. Ÿ
The above-mentioned working procedure, together with the convenience of oversight, allow the franchise business to function smoothly and efficiently. Because franchisors rely entirely on franchisees for processes such as site selection, lease negotiations, local marketing, hiring, training, accounting, payroll, and other human resource functions, the franchise can operate in a much more linear manner, which is an important asset for the franchise to remain profitable Ÿ
Ÿ
Hired managers are just workers who may or may not be genuinely committed to their positions, making monitoring their performance from afar a difficult chore, especially in any organization. However, a franchise business allows the owner to achieve effective solutions by substituting an owner for the manager and compensating him or her in the form of profits with a long-term commitment, better quality management, and improved operations management as the owner will keep the franchise steady and train their employees with better and more effective techniques. Better speed of growth.
Franchising not only provides the franchisor with financial power, but it also allows it to manage and collaborate with well established brands. Franchising enables enterprises to compete with much larger businesses, allowing them to flood marketplaces before these corporations can respond as franchises are globally connected with a positive status-quo. Ÿ
Control and supervise the staff.
Management that is motivated and focused.
All too frequently, a business owner will spend months searching for and training a new manager, only to have them depart the office after a few months or, worse, get recruited away by a rival.
Ÿ
Enhanced Profitability.
Ease of supervision.
Individuals can function efficiently via franchising to keep the firm working quickly and smoothly. Franchisees oversee and manage their workforce and carrying out their business as planned, as efficient staff is recruited by the franchisees itself. Ÿ
Greater Valuations.
With the successful combination of expanding quicker, being more lucrative, and being well-maintained, business substantially improves, and when it comes to accounts, one can anticipate bigger multiples in a very short period, which helps to preserve financial stability for that franchise owner. Ÿ
Reduced risks and stable assets.
The franchisee is responsible for paying for equipment expenditures and executing leases. It also covers for extra charges, such as accidental cover or repair costs, if necessary, in the franchisees, and plays a vital part in resolving any issues that arise within the franchise. Such combinations and elements, in the end, lower stress as well as danger factors, franchisors can expand to hundreds or even thousands of units with minimum investment and drastically develop their business without investing any of their own money or resources on unit expansion and these are some of the major reasons why franchising has become a popular business model and a boundless enterprise.
Franchising offers additional benefits in terms of smart functioning. The franchisor is not in charge of the day-to-

ith the change in the family dynamics — from the multi-generational family under one roof to the nuclear family concept — many of us face daunting challenges in caring for our elderly parents – whilst managing our personal and professional life. This challenge is further amplified with the exodus of young Indians seeking work abroad increasing every year. This migration typically involves the young adults who leave their parents behind, making it harder for older people to be cared for. Distance makes it all the more difficult to assess an aged parent's requirements, which are influenced by things like age or chronic health concerns, and to provide them with the care, protection, and love they need and deserve. This demographic shift is driving a change in the approach to elder care in India, with many companies providing athome services, from diagnostics, post-op rehabilitation to daily care.
bank, renewing their passports, filling out visa /Aadhar applications, or other mandatory jobs that demand their physical presence. All these activities can seem daunting and overwhelming for them.
And, now with the pandemic-related restrictions disrupting our typical routines, the fear takes on a whole new level. It's tough on anyone, but especially for the elderly who are staying alone and are at a higher risk of contamination because of their diminished immunity, as well as associated potential co-morbidities. The elderly need care and support – a care companion in doing their routine functional tasks and living with dignity. During these stress-ridden difficult times, the role of a compassionate caregiver assumes significance- who can not only take care of their needs but also provide the muchneeded emotional support. Varied Options in Senior Care
To care for those who once cared for us... In addition to the healthcare needs. which is primary, the elderly have other day-to-day needs which often go overlooked. Consider their everyday struggles: going to the
From the days of being confined to old-age homes managed by philanthropic or religious organizations, the concept of senior care has certainly evolved in India. The conventional old-age homes are often seen as places of loneliness and

gloom. Today, the eldercare market has a plethora of options ranging from Retirement Homes, to Nursing or Assisted Home Facilities to Senior Citizen Apartments with medical facilities, ElderCare at home, medical help on call, to cater to the unique needs, and preferences of every senior. Choosing the best place where your loved one will spend their twilight years is a huge decision. Obviously, nothing comes closer to having your loved ones cared for in the comfort of their own home...just one of the many factors that have aided the expansion of at-home care services in India. At-home care assistance not only provides excellent care for the elderly but also gives long-distance family members a greater sense of peace and connection. With effect to this, Senocare LLP specializes in providing round-the-clock personalized elder care services in India. It is a fairly unique concept in India that provides holistic treatment to the elderly by attending to their smallest as well as their most pressing needs. The initiative has helped thousands of elderly living away from their children to have a secure life with lots of care and affection from the team. In India, many seniors who wish to spend to spend a quality life during their golden years also opt for Retirement Homes. However, these places are still mistakenly perceived as a place for the homeless, and shifting one's aged parents to a retirement home is stigmatized because of the fear of being judged by society. For long, our mindset has been conditioned in such a way that makes us feel guilty to ask for professional help for eldercare. It must be noted that the initial influx into such homes started with senior citizens whose kids settled abroad to pursue their ambitions. Their decision to move to a retirement home was triggered by factors like social security, medical assistance, and escape isolation. Further, with an ever-widening generation gap owing to the influx of technology and the shift in sociocultural dynamics, a lot of elderly choose to live among their peers in retirement homes that foster senior-friendly communities. The age-old mindset has, however, started changing and the stigma associated with the concept of 'Retirement Homes' is gradually fading away with the emergence of exciting and innovative options for elderly care.
Today, the best Retirement Homes in India are equipped with good healthcare assistance and provide a sense of freedom and purpose by encouraging an elder's participation in various forms of social activities. It is only a matter of time when elder care shall soon be acknowledged for what it is: caring for and loving the elderly, breaking free from the constraints of societal norms. The future is NOW…and it's promising Even though the eldercare service market is still at a nascent stage, the demand for such services is currently booming in India and can only be expected to grow in the future. The sheer scale of India's demographic shift — almost 20% of India's population will be over the age of 60 by 2050 as estimated— is already driving a change (Reference: The Economic Times). The upward growth projection of the elderly population is an indicator that senior care can emerge as a sunrise industry and contribute to India's economic growth in the next few decades. The need for professional services for the elderly is going to be huge - geriatric physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, social workers, care assistants would be rewarding career options in the days to come. It is imperative that courses in geriatric care are included in the curriculum of all physicians, nurses, and paramedics so we start preparing towards a larger workforce from today. The globalised world and the technology boom have the potential to offer multiple career options and opportunities. If these priorities are addressed proactively, an ecosystem can be created that promotes better health, quality of life, and equitable care with respect to the preferences and needs of the elderly. Fostering the much-desired change in eldercare would also require suitable government regulations, participation of the start-ups, medical institutions, insurance companies that are part of the overall ecosystem. The ongoing pandemic has compelled the elderly to undergo a radical change in their lifestyle and needs. It's time to reassess and reinvigorate elder care in the country. There's always a beginning - and the beginning is now!
