TheCOVIDcrisisheldamirroruptomanybusiness leadersintermsofhowwerespondedwithethical
standardsatthosecriticaltimes.InMarch2020,when manycountriesaroundtheworldclosedtheirborders,and theterm‘lockdown’enteredourvocabulary,theLufthansa Groupwasforcedtogroundalmostitsentirefleetofover 750aircraft.BytheendofQ1,passengervolumeswere down98%,andonly5%offlightswereoperating.
TheGroupwasburningcashatarateof€1millionperhour andfacingasignificantinsolvencyriskbymid2020.
TheProcurementteamsatLufthansaGroupidentifiedalist ofoperations-criticalsupplierstoprotectourongoing,albeit reduced,flightoperations.Atthesametime,wehadto maximizeliquiditylevelsaslongaspossibleuntilthe governmentaidpackagearrived.
