Iprefertheterminologyofa‘balancedlife’ratherthan ‘work/lifebalance’,becausewhenyou’reanentrepreneur (andespeciallyanentrepreneurworkingfromhome),the twocanbecomeverymixed!Andtosuggestthat‘work’ and‘life’aretheantithesisofoneanothersurelyisn’twhat weshouldaspireto.Intheveryearlydaysofsettingup OLIO,itwasprettymuchimpossibletoleadabalancedlife becausewehadtoachievesomuch,insolittletime,and withvirtuallynoresources.Aswe’vegrownthebusiness andtheteamhowever,bothSaashamyCo-FounderandI haveachievedamuchmorebalancedlife–whichis important,becausethestart-upjourneyisaseriesof marathons,notasprint,andsoit’sessentialtoavoid burnout.Wefindthatworkingpredominantlyfromhomeis extremelyhelpfulinachievingbalance(5-10hoursper weekgainedbackthroughnothavingtocommute!),andwe bothcarveouttimeduringourworkingdaystoexercise.In theearlydaysweusedtofeelquiteguiltyaboutexercising whenwe‘should’beworking,butnowwerecognisethatif we’retoperformatourbestthenweneedtobementally andphysicallyfitandexerciseisabsolutelycriticalforthis. Plus,IfindthatIhavemanyofmybestinsightsand inspirationsforOLIOwhenworkingout,soitreallyis killing two birds with one stone!

Aswellasworkingtowardsabalancedlifeforourselves, we’vereallybakedthisintotheDNAofthecompanytoo. Andthishasmanifesteditselfinacoupleofimportant companypolicies.Thefirstisourholidaypolicy–wehave nocaponthenumberofday’sholidayanemployeecan take;howeverwe do haveaminimumandinsistthat everybodyhasatleast20daysoff.Thisisbecausewesaw researchfromothercompanieswhohadadoptedalimitless holidayspolicy,anditactuallyshowedthatthenumberof daysworkedbyemployeesincreased,notdecreased!We alsothinkit’sreallyimportantfortheteamtohavea collectivebreakovertheChristmasholidayssoeveryone canreallyrelax,confidentintheknowledgethattheiremail inboxisn’trapidlyfillingup!Wealsoensurethatinevery
