These are the old kind of robots (just mechanical muscles), and the real threat is by the new kinds with Artificial Intelligence.

Chatbots, roboadvisors, and other implementations of artificial intelligence have taken over people’s imaginations and led to the practical implementations of artificial intelligence. People are becoming increasingly comfortable with artificial intelligence.

But what does the consulting industry has to do with artificial intelligence?

In the short run, maybe consultants don’t have as much to fear from artificial intelligence as compared to the workers in transportation, retail, or manufacturing. But, in the wider bandwidth of things, over time innovative technology vendors will inexorably build upon openly available artificial intelligence frameworks made publicly accessible by companies like Microsoft and Google (which are looking for an increase in the sale of cloud services) to automate some of the tasks that lately cast undergraduate analysts or Indians do now for the large consulting firms.

Today, we comprehend our business and our interactions with our customers well enough, what was once a mystery, and then we try to identify patterns inside it which then eventually allows us to create algorithms and procedures that can be captured in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and then ultimately in code. This process is similar to the heuristic technique. Is the Threat Even Real?

These are challenging times for large consultancies and small independent consultants as consultancies are forced to respond to these attacks from three sides: Increasingly Available Intellectual Property, Internal Consultants and Artificial Intelligence. A huge part of that three-pronged attack will come from an ever-growing multitude of automation engineers taking over the cubicles around the world to design people out of jobs. In the same way that mechanical engineers build robots to substitute our human muscles with machine muscles, automation engineers and computer programmers are creating inexpensive machine minds with sufficient artificial intelligence to replace our more expensive human brains. Professions like that of the automation engineer will attract workforces from around the world in increasing numbers, but not nearly enough to counterbalance the losses in job opportunities that these engineers are tasked with eliminating. Only time will tell how quickly and how broadly artificial intelligence (AI) threatens the core business of consultancies.

Think, if you are in the consulting industry, what is your strategy for responding to this threat?

Because, make no mistake, the threat is real. The only question is how quickly it will substantially impact the bottom line. Sooner or later Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for better solutions will rule. With the contributions of these two technologies, time invested in primary research and data analytics can be substantially reduced. Now decision making can be quicker and more fine-tuned based on the client’s desires and behavior.

Behavior patterns can be well drawn out, and quick actions can be implemented.

However, for your comfort, let’s make a dulcet statement; say consultants are a balance of EQ and IQ so AI and robotics can’t replace the EQ and sensibility part.

ecent infringement suits filed by Ericsson over the patent issues have brought into focus the importance of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) in India. For instance, quite a few suits have been started by Ericsson against home grown and Chinese mobile handset makers, namely Micromax, Xiaomi, and Intex. Ericsson is claiming that these defendants have been infringing on certain standard essential patents of Ericsson.

STANDARD ESSENTIAL PATENTS (SEPs): An essential patent or standard-essential patent is a patent that claims an invention that must be used to comply with a technical standard. In telecommunication sector, the SEPs include some of the following technologies: • Cellular Base-band chip • 3G, 4G • Memory and multimedia cards • DRAM • WiFi • Bluetooth • GPS • NFC • Battery, Audio, MP3, Camera, JPEG • OS related Standards Thus, in order to manufacture standard compliant mobile phones, tablets and other electronic devices, manufacturers will have to use technologies that are covered by one or more SEPs. Also, it is essential that the patent owners complies with, and endorses, terms that are fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) for its patent licensing programs that make standard-essential patents widely available.

CXO Standpoint SEPs in India: Telecommunication sector The concept of SEPs evolved in India when Ericsson in 2011 objected to the importation of handsets by Kingtech Electronics (India), claiming that the handsets infringed several of their SEPs in AMR Codec (Adaptive Multi-Rate) technology. This was the starting point for SEP litigation in India.

In December 2014, Ericsson had filed a suit against Xiaomi in India for the alleged infringement of the 8 Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs). The Delhi High Court granted an injunction against Xiaomi on the sale, manufacture, advertisement, and import of Xiaomi’s devices. Xiaomi claimed that its latest devices in the Indian market (as of December 2014) the Mi3, Redmi1S and Redmi Note 4G, contained Qualcomm chipsets, which implemented technologies licensed by Ericsson.

Later, Xiaomi entered into a Patent licensing agreement that covered Qualcomm’s 3G, 4G patents including 3-mode (LTETDD, TD-SCDMA and GSM) to avoid any injunctions on its latest launched smartphones in India.

The maximum number of Standard patent applications owned by leading telecom players in India falls under IPC Subclass H04W which in general relates to wireless communication networks, followed by H04L which in general relates to transmission of digital information that covers data transmission, telegraphic communication, and methods or arrangements

Corporate Sector Contribution To The Women Empowerment

T

he 21st Century; a time of significant improvements in technologies, revolutions in industries and the way business is done. We have cars that are autonomous. We have computers that can outsmart our best Chess and Go players. And we have so much information and education flying across the air and through the ground.

Yet there is a large portion of society, especially in India that does not have access to the protection granted by our Constitution.

One of the greatest crises to the Indian Growth Story is the lack of information, and implementation, of measures to keep Women safe. We have made significant headway; today, more than ever, we have the largest participation of the fairer sex in Business and Industry. But it’s still not enough. The workplace can be a threatening place for women. As per studies conducted by Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), in association with Complykaro Services Pvt. Ltd., 98.38% of companies did not comply in toto with The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

Complykaro has been working to sensitize the corporate sector for the past 2 years. Today, we are fortunate enough to have tied up with one of the premier bodies for women empowerment in Maharashtra; Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW). Tasked with the directive to improve the status and dignity of women in the society and to effectively monitor and implement laws affecting women, they had identified the lack of awareness of University Grants Commission (Prevention, Prohibition

and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women and Student in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2015 in universities and colleges across Maharashtra.

With the goal to create effective change from an early age, Complykaro in association with MSCW are currently striving to educate maximum Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) members to implement the latest regulations in their respective institutes. This is to make a campus a safer place not only for women, but students of all gender. Educating them about what constitutes Sexual Harassment and how to prevent it. It helps these students enter the work place armed with the consciousness to create a safe and healthy work environment for all. In effect, we are attempting to nip the problem in the bud.

In light of this mandate and to further the cause of safety of women and students in general, Complykaro in association with MSCW in the 1st Phase is organising a series of Full Day Seminars across Universities in Maharashtra wherein about 10,000 ICC members and Principals of Universities and Colleges are trained and educated with respect to various aspects of the aforesaid UGC regulations. These seminars are personally conducted by Mr. Vishal Kedia, Founder and Director, Complykaro who is an eminent authority and expert trainer on the subject. These ICC members / trainers shall in turn train their colleagues as well as sensitise their respective faculties and student community. This is the largest exercise of ICC Training ever conducted in India till date. We will have successfully conducted training programmes for ICC members and Principals in Nagpur, Nashik, Nanded, Jalgaon, Pune,

The UGC Regulations have built upon the Act to further improve coverage and take steps to help mitigate the risk of harassment. The highlighted extensions are, • Gender neutral complaints are accepted from students • Broad based composition of ICC including students • HEIs to implement several support measures to prevent sexual harassment Due to this large scale sensitization, students would be well-informed and secured. They would be able to fully understand the impact and consequences of their actions, whether intended innocently or not and thus create a more conducive environment at work. MSCW has launched an initiative; PUSH - People United against Sexual Harassment in association with Complykaro to ensure effective implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 as well as the said UGC Regulations across Maharashtra.
