ROCKIN’ THE SUBURBS
Newcomer Carly Chaikin On Her Breakthrough Role & Life In Suburgatory BY ALEX S. MORRISON
S
ANTA MONICA NATIVE Carly Chaikin was plucked from obscurity at the age of 19 to play the antagonist opposite Miley Cyrus in the 2010 film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song. Now she’s playing a mean girl once again on Suburgatory, ABC’s Wednesday night sitcom about a single dad (Jeremy Sisto) who moves his daughter Tessa (Jane Levy) to the upstate New York suburbs. Here’s what you need to know about the rising star behind “popular girl” Dalia Royce. When did you first get into acting? I was really into sports when I was a kid and played sports all through middle school and part of high school. I never did one school play. It’s crazy. I was in a drama class as an elective, but I didn’t like it so I never went. I always wanted to be an actress, I just didn’t do anything about it until I was eighteen and decided I needed to get serious about my life and became one of the lucky one-in-a-million ones. Was your role in The Last Song your first big break? That was my first movie role ever. What was the process to get a big role
like that? Someone referred me to a coach, he is also an actor Jonathan Slavan? I met with him and he referred me to his manager and his manager decided to take a chance on me. That was my maybe 4th movie audition and first call back. I went in. I had been going in for pilots and stuff like that, but I went in for The Last Song and got a call back and went in again and I got the part. He is still my manager today and it just all went off from there.
What do you do for fun when you are not working? I paint, using oil and acrylic. I have a little art studio in my house that I paint in. That’s my biggest passion that most people aren’t aware of. I’ve been painting for years. I do a lot of abstract and I also do a lot of realistic things with and abstract edge to them. Dali is one of my favorite artists of all time. If you couldn’t be an actress what do you think you would be doing today? People ask me that and literally I just could not imagine being anything else in the entire world. I think I would paint and write or I would go into advertising.

What sort of stuff do you write? I actually just wrote a short film that I’m producing and doing with two of my friends. We’re going to start filming in a few weeks and we’re hoping to submit it to all of the festivals. It’s a really intense drama and hopefully it’ll be at Sundance. It’s called Nowhere To Go. I also do a lot of nonI THINK fiction and poetry.
Do you have any actresses’ careers that you hope your career will be like? Angelina Jolie was one of my biggest inspirations for wanting to be an actress. She was amazing in Girl, Interrupted and those are my dream roles to play. It’s funny, because it’s literally opposite of Dalia.
GROWING UP IN LA THERE ARE What attracted you to THOSE PEOPLE WHO Suburgatory and this HAVE LITTLE PIECES mean girl role that you OF DALHA IN THEM. play? In The Last Song and a IT’S COMBINING few other movies I did, I ALL THOSE THINGS normally play the darker TOGETHER TO CREATE role. What’s interesting is that I originally went A CHARACTER. I in for the part of Tessa. ALSO THINK THAT WE Two weeks later they called my agent and said ALL HAVE A LITTLE they wanted to see me DALIAH IN US. for Dalia, so I was like, “Okay…” I re-read the script looking at Dalia’s part, and I fell in love with it because it was something that no one has seen me play before. She is just so funny, so dry and such an interesting character. She’s been really fun to play and develop. But the biggest thing that drew me to it was the writing and style of the show, which I just thought was so incredible.
Did you ever have a Dalia-type person in your life that you could use to model the character? I went to an all girl’s middle school. I wouldn’t say I have one specific person per say. I think growing up in LA there are those people who have little pieces of Dalha in them. It’s combining all those things together to create a character. I also think that we all have a little Daliah in us.
Do you want to become more active behind the scenes as your career develops? Yes, I’m really interested in directing. Recently on the show, when I’m not in the scene I’ve been watching what goes on behind the scenes. I think the whole aspect of directing is incredibly interesting. It is a completely different creative side that is just as important as the actual acting.
Anything else you’d like to tell our readers about? There is a charity that I recently got really involved in that I’m really excited about. It’s called The Freedom To Choose, freedomtochoosefoundation.org. Specifically, there is a prison project that I’m going to do at the end of March. The program is only in one women’s prison as of right now. They are hoping to spread to other prisons. It’s going in there and talking with these women, helping them, forming support groups, starting to write letters, and support them in changing and giving them a second chance and freedom to choose about making choices. In the cases where they get out of prison, these groups continue on to help them after they get out. My mom is heavily involved in it as well and she got me involved in it. So I’m going into the prison for the weekend at the end of March.

LES MISÉRABLES

This riveting Southern Gothic musical set to a blues-tinged score is fraught with mystery, tragedy and ghosts of the past. In the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi in 1967, a terrible tragedy took the lives of two brothers and a beautiful young girl. During the next forty years, the events of that night became the stuff of local legend. But legend is often just another word for lie. Joe McCandless knows what really happened; he saw it all. The question is whether or not he can bring himself to tell the truth in time to save his own troubled sons, and whether the ghosts left behind by an act of violence will help him or tear the McCandless family apart forever. Book is by Stephen King with music & lyrics by John Mellencamp.
Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, LES MISÉRABLES is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the classic songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “Master Of The House” and many more. Cameron Mackintosh presents a brand new 25th anniversary production of the legendary musical, with glorious new staging and dazzlingly reimagined scenery. “I’m delighted that 25 years after Les Miz originally opened in London the audience is bigger and younger than ever before,” says producer Cameron Mackintosh.

FILM
GODS & HEROES
Chris Hemsworth On Thor, The Avengers & Humility In The Face of Greatness BY BRET LOVE
D
ESPITE HIS THREE YEARS ON Home and Away and a minor role in 2009’s Star Trek, Chris Hemsworth was a relative unknown beyond Australian shores before director Kenneth Branagh cast him as the mighty Thor. But in the last two years, the Melbourne-born lad has seen himself hammered onto Hollywood’s A-list, with starring roles in three major films set for release this year (this month’s The Avengers, this summer’s Snow White & the Hunstman, and a remake of the cult classic ‘80s film Red Dawn). The 28-year-old actor seems humbled by his rapid ascension up the ladder of stardom, particularly in the wake of the rabid devotion with which he is met at events such as the San Diego ComicCon. Here, the attendants revere him as some sort of chiseled god, eagerly posing for photographs and asking for autographs from the man chosen to embody the ultimate superhero of Norse mythology. Hemsworth, grinning and gracious, takes it all in stride. He also proves charming and charismatic in our interview, discussing everything from the heroes he looked up to as a child and how it felt to beat brother Liam to land the role of Thor to working with big screen icons such as Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. on The Avengers.
as I was, I was secretly angry… (Laughs) Nah, we’re very close. When he was auditioning, I was saying, “Look, I’ve got the feel about this.” When I was auditioning, it was the same thing. We both gave each other feedback. How did you initially approach getting ready for the role? I started with the comic books. I didn’t read all of them– there are 40 or 50 years worth– but I read enough to get a sense of who Thor was and the world he was from. Then I read some things on Norse mythology and the fatalistic view that they have– their belief that everything is pre-ordained– which led the Vikings into a fearless attitude in battle. They would certainly back their opinions, and they were not swayed easily. That spoke volumes to me about the character. You fill your head with whatever information and research you have, but on set it was just about making it truthful and finding a simpler way that I could relate to it. Instead of thinking about how to play a powerful god, it became about scenes between fathers and sons and brothers. You personalize it, and that helps ground the story for an audience.
What’s your view on the character of Thor? At the beginning of the movie Thor, he was a brash, cocky warrior who was about to inherit the keys to the kingdom, but his father thinks that he’s not ready. So the whole The Avengers is film was the journey a movie about PEOPLE WHO PUT THEMSELVES ON THE of him learning some heroes. Did you LINE AND SACRIFICE THEIR OWN SAFETY humility. TV
TV’S GOLDEN GIRL
Betty White’s Still Rockin’ After Six Decades in the Business BY AMANDA MILES
Y
Betty White is one of the few remaining icons of television history, with a career that spans six decades and seven Emmy Awards. America first fell in love with White on television classics such as Life with Elizabeth, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Golden Girls. She was a revolutionary in the entertainment industry– one of the few women with creative control early in her career. Now, at the age of 90, the grand dame of TV comedy is showing no signs of slowing down. White is currently enjoying a hit comedy series on TV Land, Hot in Cleveland, as well as unprecedented popularity after an uproarious turn hosting Saturday Night Live. Her new project, NBC’s Off Their Rockers, will keep audiences on their toes. The premise of the hidden camera show suits her perfectly, as senior citizens play pranks on the unsuspecting masses and White proves her uncanny knack for comedic timing. White graciously spoke with us recently about her new show and why she presently has no plans to retire.
Did you always want to work in the entertainment industry while you were growing up or did you have another profession in mind? First of all, I wanted to be a forest ranger. But, back in my day, girls couldn’t be forest rangers. Then I wrote the graduation play for grammar school. Of course, as any red blooded American girl would do, I wrote myself into the lead. Then I got on stage and I thought oh, this is fun! I think that’s what started it… when the show business bug bit me. Is it true the first show you hosted on television, you were on the air for several hours a day? Five and a half hours. What do you like about being on television? I just like television. I just love the rapport with the audience. There are only two or three people in a room watching you. If there are any more than that, they’re talking to each other. They’re not listening. You’re really addressing a very personal conversation. Sure, there are a lot of television sets around, but only two or three people to a room who are paying attention. I just find that to be a very intimate, lovely way of performing.
running concurrently. Has your success changed general opinions of what senior citizens are capable of? My mail reflects the fact that they kind of get a kick out of the fact that I’m 90 years old and I just don’t go away! I happen to be blessed with loving what I do for a living. I love this business and I’m so fortunate to be able to still work in this business. I get these marvelous letters about how encouraging it is to see someone making the most of their time and still enjoying it instead of “oh, I can’t wait to stop working, I can’t wait to retire, I hate my job.” I think it goes back to the old basic adage of accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.
With the current success of older actors such as yourself and Christopher Plummer, do you think America is nostalgic for the bygone era of television? I don’t think so. I started in this business when television first began. I did the first broadcast that was ever done in Los Angeles. Television at that point was such a novelty. It has become such a way of life now that over time, some of the same people are still around. Maybe it’s nostalgia but I think it’s just that we’ve become like personal friends that you’ve gotten to know through TV. When television came along the big novelty was the fact that these people were in your room with you. I think that’s what people get more personally associated with… that guy over there in the corner in the box.

Did you have a feeling Hot in Cleveland would be the sensation that it is? Oh, anything but. As a matter of fact, when they came to me and offered me the part on the pilot my schedule as always is a pretty busy one. I had them include in my contract that should it go to series I would not be involved or obligated to continue with the show because of my busy schedule. I wanted to be sure that I wasn’t automatically tied into it. Sometimes you do a show in February and they don’t pick it up until May. We were picked up in three weeks and they came and asked if I would do some more. I said no… but, well, I have the strength of a jellyfish. I had done one show with these wonderful girls– Wendy Malick, Jane Leeves and Valerie Bertinelli. I had such a wonderful time with them that I signed up and said I’d do some more. Then they picked us up for 24 more shows and I said sure, and I’ve done them all. I’m just having the time of my life!
Do you feel there’s a formula for good comedic television? When you start explaining why something’s funny or finding a formula for it I think it loses some of its funniness. I think the best kind of comedy is the least self-conscious. If you just sort of let the comedy happen without the elbow nudge (did you get it, did you get it). I love straight face comedy or subtle, relatively subtle comedy. Then I turn around and I find myself doing very broad comedy but it’s all fun and you have to keep your sense of humor and not take yourself seriously.
With an already packed schedule, what appealed to you about this new prank show, Off Their Rockers? Off Their Rockers was a very popular show in Europe. As a matter of fact, it won several awards. When they brought it to me it sounded like something that might be popular here so we thought we’d try it. We did a couple of them (pranks) to see how it would sing and it seemed to catch on. I haven’t the power to say no- I like what I do for a living too much. What’s fun about it is the fact that the older people get the jump on the younger ones for a change!

GREEN
EARTH MOTHER
Green Living Expert Laura Turner Seydel On Her Dad, Captain Planet & How We Can All Be More Eco-Friendly This Earth Day BY BRET LOVE
Y
OU MAY NOT KNOW LAURA Turner Seydel by name, but chances are you’re familiar with her life’s work. As daughter of one of the leading forces in environmental conservation (Ted Turner), Seydel is on the board of organizations such as the Captain Planet Foundation, the Turner Endangered Species Fund and the League Of Conservation Voters, working tirelessly on a daily basis to make the world a better place for our children to inherit. Here in Atlanta she’s also a prominent sustainable living expert, doling out advice on simple ways we can all go green. We were honored to speak with Seydel on subjects ranging from her famous father and teaching kids about conservation to key environmental concerns of the 2012 election. Your dad has been a leading light in conservation for years. At what point did you realize you wanted to dedicate your life to environmental concerns? My passion for the environment developed at an early age and has grown with time. My parents and grandparents created a “no waste zone”– food residuals were composted to nourish the garden; if you were cold, you put on a sweater; we recycled bottles and cans for money; and my father drove a fuel efficient Japanese car. They hated to waste money. We learned important lessons that helped us develop a strong ethic. My dad has continued to lead by example for his grandchildren, leading walks where exercise and litter patrol are combined, and giving of his time and treasure for the benefit of mankind. In the past 20 years, our real live Captain Planet has donated $1.5 billion to charitable causes vital to the quality of life of everyone on the planet, including women’s rights, endangered species, and protecting the natural systems that support all life. When Rutherford and I had children it took our commitment to a new level. We realized we were going to have to work that much harder to protect and restore what rightfully belongs to future generations. The Captain Planet Foundation emphasizes the vital role children can play in environmental conservation. What are some of the CPF program initiatives that you, as chairperson, are proudest of? The goal of the Captain Planet Foundation is to provide grants to schools to promote hands-on, environmental projects for children, including recycling programs, restoring wetlands, planting trees, and monitoring water quality. But my favorite grants though are our Gardens in Schools program. School gardens are a great way to get kids’ butts out of chairs and get students connected to the natural world. They can learn science and other core subjects in an interactive way, and it also helps teach kids about healthy eating. We have an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes today. One of the best ways to get kids to kick the salt, fat and sugar addiction is to have them retrain their palate. The best way I’ve seen is to have them propagate seeds, and plant and nurture their food to ripeness. All of a sudden the pickiest eater is competing against classmates for a

slice of a vine-ripened tomato. What it comes down to basically is that kids love to plant in a garden and they love to eat the fruits and veggies they grow.
IT IS IRREPREHENSIBLE AND IMMORAL FOR HEADS OF CORPORATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS TO CONTINUE TO DENY THAT THE MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF POLLUTION WE’VE BEEN PUMPING INTO OUR AIR ISN’T NEGATIVELY AFFECTING OUR CHILDREN’S HEALTH AND PUTTING THEIR FUTURES IN JEOPARDY.
If you could encourage parents to teach their children three central concepts of environmental stewardship, what would they be? You have to begin with the premise that a child has to experience and connect with nature. Our children must learn to understand, respect, care for, love, and sustainably use the resources in our garden of Eden. Number 2, don’t waste anything, which saves money and allows us to reduce the amount of pollution we emit into our air, our water and bury in our land. Lastly, we can lead by example by turning off lights and electronics when not in use, conserving water, refraining from using plastic straws, using reusable bags and water bottles, and recycling everything. All this effort saves money and gives us a healthier quality of life. One of my favorite organizations you work with is the Turner Endangered Species Fund. Can you talk a little bit about that organization’s mission? The Fund was started 14 years ago to let scientific experts use the Turner properties for captive breeding and reintroduction of endangered species into their native habitat and ranges. Over that time, we have realized many successes, including successful releases and increases in the numbers of individuals in many species. Some of my favorite species where we have had positive outcomes include the Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers in Florida and Mexican Gray Wolves, Gunnison’s Prairie Dogs, Black Footed Ferrets, Bolson Tortoise and Aplomado Falcons in New Mexico. The work of the fund serves as an important example to other private landowners on how to manage money-making ventures like ranching, timber and gas extraction while also allowing the native species to thrive in functioning ecosystems. From wolves in Yellowstone to rhinos in South Africa, so many wildlife species worldwide are currently in jeopardy. What role do you see the economic benefits of ecotourism having in the future of environmental protection? According to environmental show host Jeff Corwin, every 20 minutes another species becomes extinct. One way to combat this alarming decline is to develop ecotourism. If the animals become worth more alive than dead because of the economic benefit to local communities, governments will implement and enforce good laws. Also, ecotourism creates sustainable jobs. A good example of what happens when ecotourism works is what happened when my dad went to Democratic Republic of Congo to see the eastern lowland gorillas. He was so moved by the experience and concerned that he donated an unprecedented amount of money to help save them. Ecotourism really does make a huge difference for these imperiled species and habitats. As a board member of the League of Conservation Voters, what environmental
issues are you hoping to see addressed in this year’s Presidential election? The League of Conservation Voters has been working tirelessly with environmental groups on many pressing issues, but the #1 goal has been getting an energy and climate bill passed in Congress. This winter has been the fourth warmest on record. We’ve known that carbon is a heat-trapping gas since the 1800s. It is irreprehensible and immoral for heads of corporations and governments to continue to deny that the massive amounts of pollution we’ve been pumping into our air isn’t negatively affecting our children’s health and putting their futures in jeopardy. It’s time to do everything in our power to limit pollution and invest in a clean energy economy, and try to mitigate the damage that’s being done. Many other countries around the world are working feverishly to do their part. As just 5% of the world’s population, the U.S. is creating 25% of the world’s greenhouse gasses. We should be showing the rest of the world that we have a moral compass and we know how to use it. How would you grade the Obama administration’s performance in environmental protection? The administration has made major progress through actions to protect public health and the environment. Among the highlights: The administration proposed the next round of fuel efficiency standards for cars, which are critical to reducing our dependence on oil and cutting global warming emissions; they finalized the Cross State Air Pollution Rule and the Mercury & Air Toxics Standards to reduce power plant pollution, thus saving lives and improving public health; and they delayed and subsequently rejected the harmful Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, which would threaten our water supply and result in triple the global warming pollution of conventional crude. See my dad’s rocking CNN op-ed piece opposing this legislation on my website at lauraseydel.com.
What big events do you have coming up for Earth Day? The Captain Planet Foundation is celebrating the 10th Annual Earth Day Kids Fest on Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. This will be a wonderful day of “edutainment”: eco-superheroes such as Captain Planet and Atlanta Falcons star Ovie Mughelli will be there for pictures and autographs. We’ll have live music, fun activities, live animal encounters and healthy snacks. Admission is $5 for children, $6 for seniors and $8 for adults. Children under 2 years and those who ride their bike attend for free. For more info, visit captainplanetfoundation.org. A lot of people want to “Go Green,” but don’t know where to start. What simple changes would you suggest they make in their daily lives to become more eco-friendly? Start with simple things in your home, like saving energy, conserving water and recycling. Get involved in your school and community on environmental projects. Start a garden to help our pollinators. Volunteer to be the recycling coordinator at your workplace. Ask companies you work with or support about their sustainability plans. For the home, I recommend using low or no volatile organic compound (VOC) paint, installing low-flow showerheads and waterefficient toilets, purchasing a programmable thermostat, reducing toxic chemicals by making your own cleaning products or purchasing those formulated without toxic chemicals, and purchasing sustainably sourced home décor. My #1 pet peeve is plastic, one-use items, such as straws and plastic bags. Each day in the U.S., 500 million straws go from our lips to the landfill. Skip the straw and purchase reusable bags and water bottles. If everyone does this, we can reduce the waste in our landfills by millions of pounds each week. My website offers many more tips for ways you can make a difference.

To hear Genesis P-Orridge tell it in Marie Losier’s DIY-style documentary, his musical influences included Velvet Underground and those his industrial band Throbbing Gristle inspired include Nine Inch Nails. BORGIA FAITH & FEAR: SEASON ONE The real life renaissance-era Borgia family was so ripe for scandalous story lines, they justified two competing TV dramas (on Showtime and Netflix). The Europeanproduced Borgia Faith and Fear, which premiered in the U.S. last year via Netflix, focuses on Pope Rodrigo Borgia (played to the hilt by The Wire’s John Doman), his flock of illegitimate children, and his current and former mistresses. Immoral? Probably. Entertaining? Hell, yes!
humorous adult-themed cartoon, Adult Swim has now added a number of live action comedy series to its lineup. The Chris Elliottled Eagleheart is the latest… and one of the most consistently funny. In each 10-minute episode, Elliott and his two partners play a trio of inept U.S. Marshalls (in a solid parody of Walker, Texas Ranger) who track down drug dealers, blimp-dwelling sky warlords and the mob. THE KILLING: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON Pegged by one savvy reviewer as “Twin peaks minus the extravagant quirkiness,” this Emmynominated AMC drama centers on the mysterious death of Rosie Lawson. The show cleverly interweaves 3 different storylines, following the police, the murder suspects, and the victim’s family as they struggle with the painful aftermath of the crime. Some fans cried foul when the show left too many threads unresolved at the end of season one, but great acting from Mireille Enos, Michelle Forbes, Brendan Sexton III and Billy Campbell helped establish The Killing as another jewel in AMC’s (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead) crown.
CASABLANCA: 70TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED COLLECTOR’S EDITION Little more needs to be written about this 1942 Bergman and Bogart classic, which is on practically every Top 10 Films list ever created. But, for those who already bought the 2009 (or 2003) version, why should you upgrade to this boxed set? For one, the image quality on the new BluRay is exceptional, really bringing the black and white palette to life. For another, the 3-disc set includes a bevy of extras, including 62-page production art book, full size movie poster reproduction, four drink coasters, and two new special features. And lastly, there were only 50,000 made, and at $45 they’ll go fast.
THE OTHER F WORD There is something hilarious about a guy who gets paid to take the stage night after night and sing “Fuck Authority” at the top of his lungs, then reprimands his pre-teen daughter for using a naughty word at home. The Other F Word is a brilliant documentary based partly on ex-Pennywise frontman Jim Lindberg’s 2008 memoir Punk Rock Dad. The film features interviews with Lindberg and a host of other rock icons (including Red Hot Chili Pepper Flea), proving there is nothing more punk than fatherhood.

both the mood of the early novel as well as the visual (and definitely dated) style of the comics. Unfortunately, staying so true to the storytelling and the visuals of those early works, the film almost demands to be tucked into a niche and stored for future reference. Fans of Burroughs or the comics will immediately appreciate the grand scale and imagination of the film, while those who were not already fans of the genre will likely compare it to works such as Prince of Persia or Avatar and find it to be redundant. Director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E, Finding Nemo) has done a masterful job of directing his source material but unfortunately will likely not appeal to large audiences. It’s a great popcorn film that’s well made and fun to watch, but perhaps not the blockbuster it was intended to be. –Justin Patterson
THE KID WITH A BIKE (NR)
We don’t need to talk about Cyril (Thomas Doret) the way we did Kevin last month, but the 11-year-old is definitely at a crossroads in his young life and he needs help maneuvering his bicycle through the heavy traffic. This moving drama by Belgium’s Dardenne brothers, JeanPierre and Luc, will frustrate those who insist on knowing all the details. There’s no mention of Cyril’s mother, or why he doesn’t get a lock for his frequently-stolen vehicle. We’re plunged into the middle of the story as Cyril is looking for his father (Jérémie Renier), who dumped him in a state-run orphanage/school, moved out of their flat and changed his phone number. After an accidental meeting Cyril virtually adopts local hairdresser Samantha (Cécile de France of Hereafter) as his foster mother, asking to live with her on weekends. Why she goes along, even to choosing him over her boyfriend, isn’t clear. He’s a handful and not too sweet at his best. Given a choice of friends he passes up nice, dorky Mourad in favor of cool, older, Fagin-like Wes (Egon Di Mateo), who starts him on a life – well, at least a night – of crime. The plot is spoke-thin but the film’s a good ride. –Steve Warren
MIRROR MIRROR (PG)
We’ve seen Snow White animated, get an urban twist, shine on Broadway, go straight to DVD and live in modern times, but we’ve yet to see the princess’ story told quite like this. Three seconds into the family fantasy, there’s Julia Roberts as The Queen, giving early clue as to who the film’s star might be. The Queen is calculating with townspeople. She’s callus towards servants (namely Nathan Lane’s Brighton). She’s downright cold-hearted to Snow (Lily Collins). But we all know that the lovely young princess’ only crime is her beauty. All the more reason the evil leader grows infuriated with her when she talks to her magic mirror. Speaking of the straight-shooting reflective piece, you’re either going to find the interpretation to be inventive or a complete insult. Fairy tale purists may also raise a brow at a few of director Tarsem Singh’s (Immortals) other creative liberties. They’ll be okay with the lines about rented clothes and focus groups, but may find issues with the poisonous apple’s use, the glass coffin’s absence and the seven dwarves’ names (Grub and Grimm, not Sleepy and Sneezy). If not those instances, they’ll certainly wonder about underwhelming sets (the forest feels more like a backyard) and over-stiff acting (Armie Hammer as Prince Alcott). Somehow though, Mrs. Roberts makes it all watchable, proving, at least in this latest Snow White incarnation, that the Queen is the fairest of them all. –DeMarco Williams

ATLANTA INSIGHT
In my eyes, there’s no possibility of a movie failing to please when it involves two adorable Brits and fishing as a symbol of overcoming the impossible. This feel-good movie (see director Lasse Hallstrom’s previous happy flicks, including Chocolat or Something to Talk About) introduces us to Miss Chetwood-Tolbert and Dr. Jones, two quirky, witty and irresistibly innocent individuals completely unaware that they’re both looking for a happier life. Keenly played by Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor, they’re intertwined via a project to introduce salmon fishing into the Yemen.
Theoretically it’s impossible, and the challenge teaches our protagonists a little something about faith, hope and camaraderie. The story is light, tender and just funny enough to appeal to any audience. From beginning to end, nothing left me unsatisfied, confused or comparing it to something else. Truly, it’s been a while since a movie left me feeling so good, and I definitely want to make sure you get to experience it too. –Jenni Williams
SILENT HOUSE (R)
As real-time thrillers go, Silent House is no Phone Booth. Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) is cleaning out her family’s old summer house with her father and uncle to get it ready to sell. It’s boarded up to keep out vandals, so no sunlight gets in. Even with flashlights and lanterns, most of the film is so dim it’s a struggle to stay awake watching it. Sarah gets trapped in the house when her uncle leaves and her father is killed (or maybe not) by someone or something in the house. You get the idea… or think you do. Directors Chris Kentis (the terrific Open Water) and Laura Lau experiment with what looks like one continuous shot, but actually has a few invisible edits. Cinematographer Igor Martinovic does incredible work in this regard. Even if the takes were ten minutes rather than 80, the logistics involved in getting them are mind-boggling. However the technique should serve the story, and it doesn’t. In the end, we find we’ve been swindled by the visual equivalent of what in literature is called the unreliable narrator. At its best, Silent House is more annoying than terrifying. –Steve Warren
21 JUMP STREET (R)
I’m just going to come out and say it: This movie is hilarious. The trailer teases a non-stop laugh-fest, but that always makes me a bit wary of a cheesy, raunchy letdown. The story is simple– two bottomof-the-rung cops get sent back to high school, undercover, to bring down a synthetic drug ring. An insult to the original TV show? With a wink, I’ll say no way. And with flying colors, I give my stamp of approval to an endearing combination of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Not only do they make a believable duo, but the chemistry that exists between them snatches laughs at every level with almost every line. I think I actually slapped my knee a few times. Hill is an Oscar-nominated actor now, so you know he wouldn’t just take any script, and there are so many fun people packed into this flick that you really shouldn’t miss out on the fun. –Jenni Williams
WRATH OF THE TITANS (PG-13)
If you thought Clash of the Titans rocked, you’re going to find Wrath orgasmic. We’re guessing new director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), the writers and special effects teams saw what worked and what didn’t on the first trip to Ancient Greece and wisely chose to polish things up some. That’s great because a story about gods, underworlds and underworld gods could easily become a mess of mythological proportions. Wrath centerpiece Perseus (Sam Worthington) even has more of a likeable visage this time. Though half god, Perseus chooses to live the life of a common fisherman and single parent to his son, Helius. But when you have a father named Zeus (Liam Neeson), and he seeks out your help to fight baddies named Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Kronos, villagers say things to you like, “If you have power, you also have a duty.” Perseus obliges, and brings the son of Poseidon, Agenor (Toby Kebbell), and Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) along for the adventure. Clash would’ve thrown some smoke and a few 3-D tricks at you by now. In Wrath, it’s no gimmick: You’ll flinch three or four times from flying debris. In Clash, Medusa and Kraken’s big moments were nothing more than CGI’d letdowns. Wrath battles featuring Cyclops, Minotaurs and other creepy crawlers are jawdropping experiences you’ll beg the ride operator to let you sit through again. And that’s just how you feel for the length of the movie. Wrath is a crisp, testosterone-pumping world that happens to be worlds better than its tepid predecessor. –DeMarco Williams

THAT’S WHAT CARRIE SAID!
True Blood’s Sassy Niche-Queen Carrie Preston Dishes It Out BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
C
ARRIE PRESTON, IS BESTknown as the sassy waitress Arlene in the popular HBO series True Blood. The busy actorfilmmaker is also an accomplished stage, film and television veteran with credits ranging from Shakespearian dramas to TV’s The Good Wife. Recently, the Macon-born Preston spoke with Lee Valentine Smith during a break in her True Blood shooting schedule to discuss her newest film, That’s What She Said, her third venture as a director. The outrageously raunchy indie comedy debuted at Sundance in January and recently acquired wide distribution rights. The mad romp, which stars Anne Heche, will be screened at the Atlanta Film Festival at 7 p.m. on March 30. Preston will attend and offer a Q and A session, even if she has to do it via Skype, as she did at the recent Macon Film Festival. You actually started your acting career as a kid in Macon, right? I did! I started doing community theater when I was 9 or 10 years old and I didn’t look back. I definitely got bitten by the bug down there. Were you aware of the music scene in Macon? My parents used to hang out with some of those people and they took us to see music, so I was always aware of the musicians that came out of Macon. Certainly the Allman Brothers and even the ties to R.E.M. And we were also aware of what was happening in Athens. I remember listening to the B-52’s and just having my head blown open. I’d never heard anything like it – and they were from Georgia, which is so exciting. You were recently in Macon at the Film Festival there, but only virtually. Right, I couldn’t make it down because of my schedule, but they set up Skype and my face was, I don’t know, 20 feet high! I have a lot of support in my hometown and it makes me feel very humble and very proud. Especially with a film like this, which can be a little challenging and the subject matter can be a little bit raunchy, and not to everybody’s taste, but they all came out and stayed and wanted to talk and hear about the filmmaking. The title of the film is a part of the American lexicon at this point, a sort of universal punch-line. The film is very much an answer to all the “bromance” movies that are out there now, male-driven movies about men who actually behave like boys. The phrase “That’s What She Said” is such a nod to that, to the phrase that dudes say to one another, if any sexual innuendo comes up. But it is, literally, a movie about women talking, so it is “what she said.”
PG 18 • April 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
Tell us a little about it. It’s a film about three women, on one day, in New York City. One of them is getting ready for a big date. Her bitter best friend is by her side and they pick up a total stranger who cant stop talking about her breakup. It’s definitely a movie about how friendship can get “rained on and puked on and grease-stained” and survive. Since this is your third film, you’ve obviously fought the “female director” stigma. I think there is a stigma, but I think that’s true of women in general, you know? In all professions, still. I really think a lot has happened since Women’s Liberation, but we still have a lot of work to do. I never think of myself as a “woman filmmaker,” I think of myself as a filmmaker. So the more that I continue to not choose to be anything that distinguishes me from anyone else, the more people will begin to accept that. Film festivals are such a great place for people to discover the best new, independent work, including female directors and casts. It’s still a man’s business, filmmaking, as far as getting the funding and certainly in the studio system. But yes, I agree; I don’t think it’s true in the indie world. Even at Sundance where we made the premiere, there were several films directed by women. Now it was still a very small percentage compared to men, but I feel like we’ve made great strides. But in your case, most of your characters are strong women, even in subtle ways. There’s a definite feeling of empowerment in most of your roles and films. I appreciate that. I like to think that you are taking that from my work. I certainly am drawn to characters that are strong. I get to play so many different kinds of women, I don’t find that I‘m typecast and I think the same can be said about the types of films my production company [Daisy 3 Pictures] is making. We’re tying to offer the alternative to mainstream offerings. Right, your company is a wonderful definition of “niche” films. We like to say we make gay films you can take your mother to and women’s films with a “broad” appeal. A lot of films for the gay audiences are necessarily about romance and stuff and we’re making films that are more about people who are either absolutely comfortable with being gay, just happen to be gay, or a film about a mother who is struggling with her son who may or not turn out to be gay. We kind come at it from a different angle. The same with That’s What She Said; it’s an alternative. A place where we can take women down from off of the Hollywood pedestal and mess them up a little bit.
I REMEMBER LISTENING TO THE B-52’S AND JUST HAVING MY HEAD BLOWN OPEN. I’D NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT – AND THEY WERE FROM GEORGIA, WHICH IS SO EXCITING.
We have to talk about True Blood since creator Alan Ball is from Atlanta. He sure is! I first met him when I did a film called Towelhead, and that was about five years ago. When we were shooting that, we got to be friends, obviously because of the Georgia connection, and we were on set one day and I asked, “What are you doing next?” He said, “I’m actually gonna be doing a vampire show for HBO and I might have something for you.” I can see you two getting together and dishing about the South. I think being southern was just one way for us to connect. But yeah, there’s definitely a shorthand there. You’re probably best known as Arlene Fowler, the redhead, but you’re also a redhead in real life now. It was a wig at first because when we shot the pilot, I was a blonde in another film, so I couldn’t change it.
The character in the book is a redhead, so I wanted to keep her that way. Each season of True Blood is like two weeks, so there was literally no time for the character to have cut her hair or anything. Once we got to season four, there was a bit of a break in the timeline, so everybody took that opportunity to change their looks up. I wanted to get rid of the wig and use my own hair. You look great! Well, thank you! I do actually enjoy it, as a person. It’s really fun and it makes me feel really sassy. It was a refreshing change to the blonde. But I’ve been every color; I change it for work and also because I tend to get a little bored. “That’s What She Said,” 7 p.m. March 30, Midtown Art Cinema, 931 Monroe Drive. 678-495-1424. www.atlantafilmfestival.com.

This Month’s Hottest Shows BY SACHA DZUBA APRIL 5 – ANDREW W.K. The Masquerade Most recently known as the host of Destroy Build Destroy, Andrew W. K. is a singer, multiinstrumentalist, and even a motivational speaker. He may be famous for his bloody nose and his fun loving attitude, but the guy can shred on a piano. I found a great video of him online in a piano battle with Chilly Gonzales. He has released some albums out of left field, a j-pop (Japanese pop music) cover album, as well as an album of cover songs from the jap-anime Gundam. This is the 10th anniversary of I Get Wet, the release that put him on the map and the reason for his hard partying return. You’re sure to hear pop rock favorites, “Party Hard”, “Fun Night”, and “She is Beautiful”. Come out and party with the King of Partying, Andrew W. K, you will remember tonight. APRIL 6 – NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS The Tabernacle The solo project of former Oasis member and founder Noel Gallagher, NG’s High Flying Birds is a combination of choral, orchestra, horns, and big sounding guitars this side of Sgt. Pepper. I personally think it’s the best that Noel Gallagher has sounded since his Oasis, What’s the Story Morning Glory, days. You’re certain to hear some Oasis favorites and maybe a few surprises, but the new tracks stand tall next to Noel’s back catalog as welcome additions. Be sure to listen out particu-
larly for “If I Had A Gun” and “AKA What A Life!”. Noel Gallagher and co. will certainly have you singing along in all the choruses, swaying back and forth with your iphone lighter app lit and high in the air. Noel may have originally been standing in the shadows of younger brother Liam, but he has spread his wings now and is flying high. APRIL 10 – THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS The Arena at Gwinnett Center The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been around since the mid-80’s but their sound hasn’t remained the same. Initially influenced by funk, hard rock, alternative, and punk, punctuated with rap style lyrics, their sound has evolved since then to encompass more focused clean singing along with their funky style. Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magick was my first real introduction to the band and I remember loving “Under the Bridge”. The triumphant return of original guitarist John Frusciante created the magic of Californication and the grammy award winning Stadium Arcadium. Their latest album, I’m With You, is their first album with new guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer. Regarding the album and the new addition of Josh as their guitarist, vocalist Anthony Kiedis noted, “there is no question – this is a beginning,” with drummer Chad Smith stating, “this is a new band. Same name, but it’s a new band.” Check out the new lineup and their new sound, but have no doubts that there will be plenty of hits to spice up the offerings of the Chili Peppers live show. Due to an injury, this is a rescheduled performance from their original show date of Jan. 30. APRIL 16 – THE TING TINGS Variety Playhouse The Ting Tings are a great pop rock duo out
of England. They are of course known primarily for their huge hit “That’s Not My Name” as well as their song “Shut Up and Let Me Go”. The Ting Ting’s are back with a new album called Sounds From Nowheresville, with musical ideas that make their return sound like a mix tape. You can hear influences as diverse as TLC, the Pet Shop Boys, and Fleetwood Mac. There’s electro, r&b, and pop rock all vying to be heard, check out “Hands” and “Hang It Up” to get an idea of what I mean. Perhaps you were going to dismiss them as a one hit wonder, bad idea. These two are back with some imminently danceable tracks that you will soon be clapping your hands and stomping your feet to in no time! APRIL 25 – THE MELVINS The Loft The Melvins have merged and blended musical styles of metal, hard rock, and punk music and are largely recognized as helping to create sludge and doom metal. I’ve known of the Melvins for years, mostly due to them being very publicly namedropped by Nirvana, and influencing Soundgarden, Tool, Mastadon, and Boris (who take their name from a Melvins song). These guys have been steadily producing material for 27 year and are still relevant today. Frontman Buzz Osborne is still head banging his trademarked Sideshow Bob afro. These guys have a bizarre sense of humor, along with a penchant for experimentation, but in the realm of sludge and doom metal, King Buzzo and crew reign supreme. They’re on the cusp of releasing a new album, Freak Puke, sometime in June. If it helps you get an idea of just how wacky they can be, realize that they’re longtime record label is Ipecac Records, run by the one and only Mike Patton. This band is legendary in their creation of a music genre that persists today and is still influencing some of our current metal darlings. Slo-Mo metal horns required. APRIL 28 – RODRIGO Y GABRIELA The Tabernacle Rodrigo y Gabriela were first brought to my attention through their excellent instrumental fla-
WE GOT NEXT THE MENZINGERS
MAY 4 – MICKEY AVALON The Masquerade Mickey Avalon is a white rapper, a sleazy decadent raunchy glam rap rock star. Sexy beats, sleazy rhymes, and a Jagger Swagger punctuate his music. Mickey Avalon is his porn name mind you, and yes, we’re talking pet’s name mixed with street you live on kind of porn name. He’s a survivor and man of the streets. Talk about misfortune turned to success, the grandson of Auschwitz survivors has weathered tragic deaths of his father and sister, heroin addiction, self-prostitution (to feed his needle habit) and he’s gone beyond, turned around, and become a great success. From inauspicious beginnings recording rap in his friend’s basement studio, to opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers (among others). You might know his song “What Do You Say?” from being featured in The Hangover. Or you might have heard his hit “My Dick” which features a sequence of penile referential, analogous insinuatory put-downs. After some record label issues, his latest album Loaded has finally been released. Don’t miss a chance to go out, party, and do the “Jane Fonda” with Mickey.

menco interpretation of “Oogie Boogie’s song” from Nightmare Before Christmas. They are a Mexican guitar duo consisting of Rodrigo Sánchez, and Gabriela Quintero. Bizarrely this acoustic latin rock duo met while playing in a thrash metal band and cites Metallica, as well as Testament, Megadeth, and Slayer as influences. More recently they’ve worked in assisting the scoring of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film as well as Puss in Boots. Their most recent album is Area 52 which features many famous Cuban musicians and a backing band for Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s music, radically rearranging pieces from their back catalog. While they sound nothing like their metal influences, their guitar proficiency and driving rhythms will capture your ears and get your toes tapping. In a live setting they are quite something to behold, bring your metal horns and your flamenco heels.
HREE ALBUMS INTO IT AND Scranton’s favorite sons have turned in their tightest collection yet of anthemic pop-punk rock yet. The band has spent the past six years building up a solid following from tiny clubs to respectable theaters, winning over fans and critics one show at a time. The group has been asked to tour by everyone from Gaslight Anthem to Against Me!, so it should come as little surprise that On the Impossible Past, the band’s first for storied label Epitaph, is one of the most anticipated punk rock releases of 2012. The album doesn’t disappoint, building on the promise of the first two efforts. Greg Barnett, who plays guitar and sings for The Menzingers, spoke recently about the new record, signing to Epitaph and
years, these Philly rockers were snagged by Bad Religion guitarist to join his label.
exactly why they’re the luckiest kids in the world. The last time I talked to you, Chamberlain Waits was just about to come out and your bass player moved into his own place. You guys have been through a lot since then. What have the past year and a half been like? It’s been absolutely crazy! We’ve toured with some of our favorite bands, been to more places than I thought were even possible, and still wake up every morning craving more. We’re the luckiest kids in the world. This is your first record for Epitaph - were you guys fans of the label growing up? Oh absolutely. Epitaph, Fat Wreck, and Lookout were my favorite labels growing up and I pretty much bought everything they released. Epitaph has released some of my all time favorite records, so it’s an honor to be on the label for sure. How did you end up signing with them? Apparently they
were fans of our band and contacted us about working with them. We flew out to L.A. and met everyone over a big BBQ. It just felt right. Besides Red Scare, I couldn’t imagine working with any other label. (Editor’s note: Red Scare was The Menzingers’ previous label.) What can you tell me about the new record? It’s got 13 songs, some guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. I even play a mean glockenspiel ditty in the song “Gates”. Was writing and recording this one any different than Chamberlain Waits? Yeah, for sure. We had more time with regards to writing and recording so we experimented a bit more. I think the record flows better than Chamberlain Waits, but that’s just me. Did you end up going back to Philly to write for this record? We took three weeks off last summer from touring and camped out at my house in Lake Ariel, PA to write the record. A good percentage of it was already written in Philly beforehand, but everything was finalized there. It was a pretty surreal experience to finish this record in the same house I learned how to play guitar in. I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world.
I spoke with Ian (Graham) from Cheap Girls the other day and he mention the tour you guys will be going on shortly. How did you first meet those guys? I first met Adam (Aymor) from Cheap Girls back in 2007 at his house in Lansing. We were on tour with The Holy Mess and had a show scheduled at Macs Bar. Two hours into the show we realized no one was gonna show up so the promoter (who’s now our tour manager) Scott Bell decided to move the show to his house. The house show ruled and I ended up hanging out with Adam for a while. The first time I met Ian from Cheap Girls was at Harvest Of Hope Festival. Ian was drunk, running around the campsite playing the riff from “Low Rider” by War for like five fucking hours. I knew we were gonna be best friends after that. What’s next for the band? We leave for Australia next week, have a U.S. headline tour with Cheap Girls and The Sidekicks in March/April, go to Europe with The Bouncing Souls in April/ May, and continue to tour for the rest of the year. I’m pretty sure we’re booked till November. Pretty crazy! Anything else you want to cover? How good is that new Sidekicks record?! insiteatlanta.com • April 2012 • PG 19

Album Reviews
Reviews by B. Love, DeMarco Williams John Moore & Lee Valentine Smith
The Dean’s List AMY RAY – Lung of Love (Daemon) Still strong, even when flying solo BL: I’ve always admired Amy Ray as much for the work she did off stage as for her intensely personal music. Her Daemon Records label has been vital to Georgia’s indie music scene. Politically, she’s put the weight of her fame behind a host of excellent causes ranging from LGBT and women’s rights to environmental protection and the struggles of indigenous people around the world. Now, less than a year after the Indigo Girls released Beauty Queen Sister, Ray has returned with her fourth solo LP (her first since 2008). On the opening “When You’re Gone, You’re Gone,” she’s still mooning over a lost love like she did on “Blood & Fire,” but the lonesome lap steel guitar symbolizes resigned acceptance rather than heartbroken desperation. “Glow” is among her most rocking tracks in years– one minute and 56 seconds of power-pop perfection. “From Haiti” proves she still has an eye on the world’s sociopolitical problems, and on the unabashedly lovesick “Little Revolution,” she proves she’s not averse to a little McCartneyesque silly love song. The result is as fun (and flyweight) as anything she’s recorded. But for those seeking classic Amy Ray songwriting prowess, check the bluegrassinfluenced gospel of “The Rock Is My Foundation,” which, like many of Lung of Love’s best songs, features impeccable backing vocals from Brandi Carlisle. Touching on familiar topics– sin, salvation, religion, etc.– the song sounds like a longlost cut from O Brother, Where Art Thou, and it’s my favorite thing Ray’s written in years. While the edge of her songwriting may not be quite as jagged and piercing at the age of 48 as it was at 23, maturity has brought with it a more expansive artistic palette, and a deeper shade of soul. JOHNNY CASH – The Soul of Truth: Bootleg Vol. IV (Columbia/Legacy) Country’s biggest badass gets religion JM: For a whole legion of new fans, Johnny Cash is the bad ass guy in black who covered Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode; is on a poster in dorm room walls across the country giving a defiant middle finger to the camera; stood in front of prisoners in Folsom and San Quentin, doped out of his mind, and openly mocked the prison guards during live concerts. And yes, he is/was all those things, but also a devote Christian who recorded almost a dozen gospel album dating back to 1959. Columbia and Legacy Records have collected and repackaged three of those rare albums: A Believer Sings The Truth; an untitled, unreleased 1975 set; and Johnny Cash Gospel Singer. These recordings have been pretty hard to find over the years and with this new release the labels have also included 15 unreleased tracks (including outtakes from the original sessions). The 51 songs are spread out over two CDs, with liner notes by Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, PG 20 • April 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
who describes his dad’s upbringing on gospel and his passion for recording and performing this style of music at a time when his record labels fought him on the decision. Though many of the songs are predictably preachy, there is no escaping the sincere emotion in Cash’s voice when he delivers these songs. Besides, Cash could cover Justin Beiber’s ‘tween pop catalogue and still come off sounding amazing. GRIPP – Head In The Clouds (glassEyeballs) Dropping science, in more ways than one BL: For a city that revolutionized the face of hiphop, Atlanta’s alt-rap scene has been surprisingly dormant in recent years. B.o.B. may have made a major breakthrough with his debut, but once-buzzworthy acts such as Novel and Izza Kizza fizzled before they could shine. Other than Yelawolf, it’s difficult to name any other Atlanta-based underground MCs who seem poised for major breakthroughs anytime soon. When I first met Marshall “Gripp” Gillson, he was dropping some of the deepest science I’d ever heard at a local slam poetry event, blending an artful exploration of language with a scholar’s knowledge (gained while pursuing a Master’s Degree in Computer Science at Georgia Tech). Gripp is a prominent member of one of Atlanta’s hottest slam poetry teams, and has placed high at several national slams, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that dude can also rap his ass off. The multi-talented Gillson produces, engineers and releases all of his own material, and his fourth solo LP offers up an accessible nerdcore sound that should appeal to any fan of conscious hip-hop from The Roots/ Common school. The opening track, “Just The Type,” establishes his left-of-center style, as Gripp drops intelligent rhymes over a beat-free backdrop that combines a rhythmic piano riff with lush orchestration. The infectious “Something New” rides a classic boom-bap beat as Bripp rips the script with cocky braggadocio: “If I don’t know much, you know less/ So it’s no stress to stretch the facts over the bars like a Bowflex/ I keep it so fresh, most rappers are tone deaf.” After the verse hits you with a series of lyrical jabs, the catchy-as-hell chorus delivers the knockout punch. Too many MCs these days craft incredible rhymes, but then lay them over crap production. And of course the hip-hop mainstream is glutted with killer hooks and meaningless lyrics. Like Kanye West, Gripp is the rare artist who can handle both with equal aplomb, and he deserves a shot at greatness.
Rest of the Class THE MELISMATICS – Mania! (Pravda) Minneapolis synth rockers pinning for the ‘80s JM: Minneapolis has one of the most respected music scenes in rock history. The city has spawned some of rock’s most influential musicians (Prince, The Replacements, Husker Du, and on and on) and still has a thriving scene. With so many
great bands to draw from, you can’t help but wonder what the guys and girls in The Melismatics were listening to growing up. If Lady Gaga decided to start an indie pop band I’m pretty sure it would sound a lot like The Melismatics. Even with the highly talented John Auer (from The Posies and Big Star) producing their record Mania! the result is still just an underwhelming collection of tracks that sound like a band shooting no higher than attempting to bring back the spirit of Soft Cell and the Human League. The synth-backed, robotic-delivery from the band just sounds sterile and devoid of emotion (“Smoke and Mirrors” is the probably the only exception). This is not a band you could imagine carrying on if the fuse were to blow out in the club they were playing. My advice to the band: Pick up a copy of Prince’s Purple Rain and The Replacements’ Tim, and then give it another shot. GRADE: C TIGER! TIGER! – Cut Them Where They Bleed (Chicken Ranch) 21st Century girl-group noir LVS: A superior sequel to the eerie pop of 2007’s The Kind of Goodnight, Cut bleeds with the typically sly vocals and lyrics of singerguitarist Buffi Aguero. The five-piece group of seasoned Atlanta-scene vets also includes Susanne Gibboney (bass), Shane Pringle (guitar), San Leyja (organ), and Mario Colangelo (drums). The collective’s newest release, from Austin’s edgy Chicken Ranch, explores their usual noir landscapes in the form of 15 disturbingly solid, multi-tiered rock and roll songs. On the surface, there‘s a deceptively sweet ‘60s/‘80sinspired girl-group sweetness. Menacingly disrupted by the insistent guitar/keyboard/ horn-fueled dank cabaret underbelly, the tracks radiate a snaky, infectiously frenzied mayhem to the proceedings. But Aguero, also of the Subsonics, with the aid of Gibboney (of Lust and Catfight), presents outstanding performances on album highlights “Law Of Attrition,” “Circle The Drain” and “Perfume of Despair,” marking this collection as one of the very best releases from the impressive canon of their other projects. GRADE: B+ ROSCOE DASH & HOVEN X – Cleaning Out My Closet (Self-Released) Don’t believe the hype DW: We’re all vexed about Roscoe Dash. Is he a new artist or an old one? XXL had him on its “Freshman Class” cover in March, even though the young man had a project released in 2010. Is he a party rapper or a poet? His hit single, “All the Way Turnt Up,” was a straight jingle, but on this collabo with longtime homie Hoven X, Roscoe dares to flex the occasional lyrical muscle. Maybe it’s all a part of Team Dash’s wacky marketing. Maybe the young man simply isn’t sure of his course. This mix wants to be some loud declaration that the 21-year-old Atlantan has officially arrived, but it’s gonna take a lot more than 29 songs about broads and bank accounts to prove that. Signs of some skills are
evident on a smooth “Run This Town” cover. The other decent spots work more because of borrowed Drake beats (“Karaoke”) or bangin’ Hoven bars (“Whistle”). Sadly, the recycled tracks and rudimentary topics elsewhere do nothing to peg Roscoe Dash as anything more than another rapper trying to find his way. GRADE: CDRUNKEN PRAYER – Into the Missionfield (Fluff and Gravy) Portland singer-songwriter sounds just like a country boy JM: You’d be forgiven for assuming Morgan Christopher Geer (aka Drunken Prayer) called Austin, hell even Nashville, home. But he’s actually from Portland, home to so many sound alike hipster bands. That alone should bring some added attention to his latest, Into the Missionfield, a nice blend of folk and alt country. With some dark themes, but surprisingly sweet melodies, he can sing about the devil taking your soul (“Always So Sad”) and make it sound like a raise-your- glass-and-sing-withme pub staple. Not every track is a winner (“Ain’t No Grave” is probably the weakest), but Drunken Prayer is at its best when they slow it down, and bring in the fiddle and organ (“Maryjane” is one of the best). Coming off like Warren Zevon fronting Uncle Tupelo, Drunken Prayer plays music so unlike most of the songs coming out of Oregon today that you’d swear this was just some hipster experiment in ironic Americana. Regardless the music is still worth checking out even if we are all being duped. GRADE: B ANTHONY HAMILTON – Back to Love (RCA) A deeper shade of soul HH: As its title implies, there’s plenty of sexy crooning on Anthony Hamilton’s fourth album. Now that he’s a certified star due to the Gold certification of his previous CD, the singer isn’t fixing what ain’t broken. Hence we get a dozen songs that fit comfortably with the smooth yet organic approach that has become his calling card. Unlike other contemporary soul men, Hamilton writes (or co-composes) all his material, which allows him to occasionally stray from the commercially successful baby-making tunes that dominate this set. Tracks such as “Mad,” with its heart-pounding bass drum, handclaps, Hammond B3, stinging lead guitar and Stevie Wonder-style harmonica, are rougher and grittier than anything on his Jermaine Dupri-produced 2003 breakout album, giving this disc a far more rootsy and dusky vibe. Hamilton’s reliance on real instruments doesn’t feel the least bit retro, and helps tie these songs to a more heartfelt groove. Even with nine different producers, the songs congeal into a unified whole, thanks in large part to the singer’s gutsy vocals. He’s in terrific, earthy voice throughout, getting down and dirty on the harder-edged material and sweet and sour on the love songs. Side roads into funky rock (on the surprisingly raw and edgy “Sucka’ For You”) and ‘70s Al Green (on the horn-infused R&B of the enticing “Woo”) notwithstanding, Hamilton is here to entertain you in the bedroom, then leave you thinking about his message afterwards. Perhaps the stripped-down closer, with its chorus of “life has a way of humbling you down” nestled atop electric piano, barely there drums and gospel backing vocals, best summarizes Hamilton’s connection to both the soul crooners of the past and the current sound of Southern soul. PEACH OF A GIRL
Georgia’s Own Lauren Alaina Is American Idol’s Latest Breakthrough Star BY AMANDA MILES
M
OST TEENAGERS SPEND their summer hanging out with friends or soaking up some rays at the neighborhood pool. But Rossville, Georgia native Lauren Alaina is no average teenager. The country music sensation will spend her summer touring with some of the biggest names in the business, opening for Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean on the 2012 My Kinda Party Tour and for Sugarland’s In the Hands of the Fans Tour. America fell in love with the vivacious singer on American Idol when she stunned the judges with a stirring rendition of the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill hit, “Like We Never Loved At All.” Though she did not win the Idol title (she ultimately came in second to Scotty McReery), she won over the hearts of America, and her infectious smile and remarkable voice caused Nashville to take notice. She soon signed a contract with Mercury Nashville and found herself surrounded by Georgia’s supportive country music community. Alaina recently spoke with INsite during downtime on the road about how life has changed dramatically and why she loves being a Georgia peach. You were first runner-up on arguably the biggest talent contest in the world. You recorded an album and joined the hottest tours of the summer. What has the last year been like for you?
If I take you back before Idol, I was 15 and had just become a sophomore in high school. I worked at CiCi’s Pizza. I was a cheerleader. I had a very low-key life. I decided to try out for American Idol and it all changed from there. My first audition was in July and the finale date was in May. Over the course of a year, my life went from being a normal 15-year-old girl to a 16–year–old girl who’s runner-up on American Idol and going out on my first tour. Next, I picked songs for my album and put out the record in October. Now my album is out and I’m on tour with Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean. I’m about to go out on tour with Sugarland. (Laughs) Life has changed slightly!
You’re currently on the road with Jason and Luke. What has this experience been like for you? I went out on tour with American Idol and I thought it was awesome until I went out on the road with Jason and Luke. I get to be the artist that I want to be and show the fans what I’m all about. Then I get to have backstage passes to Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan concerts every night. It’s kind of unreal! In your return to Idol we saw you perform your new single “Georgia Peaches.” How did it feel to return to the Idol stage? Last year on Idol it was so stressful because you had to take someone else’s song and make it your own. You worry about whether or not people are going to vote for you. It’s a
very stressful process. Now I get to do things that are true to who I am now opposed to trying to win people over with other people’s songs. Now it is all about my songs and who I want to be as an artist. It is a really big stress relief because I don’t worry about someone calling in to vote for me. I just worry about going out there and doing my absolute best and hoping that people love what I do. What was it like to record your very first album after Idol was over? I’m really new... when I was picking the songs for my album I was just becoming an artist. I’ve always sung, but I’ve never sung my own songs. It was a completely different field that I was having to figure out. It’s a hard process to pick the songs for your first album because you want to be able to portray the type of person you are and for people to understand that and connect with it. It’s scary. I picked songs that if I was riding down the road in my car with my best friend I would turn up on the radio and jam to! I know how to be a country music fan and every day I’m learning how to be an artist.

THIS LIFE IS SO DIFFERENT THAN THE LIFE THAT I GREW UP KNOWING. IF I DIDN’T HAVE MY FAMILY SUPPORTING ME AND GOING WITH ME, I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE IT.
Fans are loving “Georgia Peaches.” What drew you to this song? “Like My Mother Does” was my first single, and it was a really slow ballad. I knew that for my next single, I wanted to do something uptempo so people could see the spunky side of my personality. When I was picking songs for my album I remember hearing “Georgia Peaches” and just loving it because the song describes me perfectly. It’s easy to sing about something that you believe in. Mallory Hope (one of the song’s writers) lived just 20 minutes away from where I grew up. She’s practically my neighbor. I love the song and I love performing it. Being away on tour can be tough. Do you have a chance to spend time with your family? My mom goes everywhere with me, and my dad comes to as many shows as he can. My daddy works all the time, so when he’s off he comes my shows. My brother comes, too. This life is so different than the life that I grew up knowing. If I didn’t have my family supporting me and going with me, I would not be able to handle it. I’m only 17, you know? Without my mom and my family, I could not have ever done this.

A PHONE CALL FROM CALIFORNIA
The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine Calls from Inside the Band’s Historic Reunion BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
A
L JARDINE JUST MAY BE THE MOST important member of the Beach Boys. Without his insistence, the band wouldn’t have recorded its first indie single. Now, fifty years later, his own solo single (“Don’t Fight The Sea”) has ultimately led to the full-scale reunion of songwriter-bassist Brain Wilson, singer Mike Love, singerpianist Bruce Johnston, and guitarist David Marks. Calling from the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood after a Beach Boys session, guitarist and singer Jardine -- yes, that’s him singing lead on the unforgettable “Help Me, Rhonda” -- discussed the band and his first solo album, a delightful and star-studded salute to California called “A Postcard From California.” It must be quite a thrill to be back in that building and working on a Beach Boys project for the 50th anniversary of the band. This is a monumental occasion. There’s not too many of those that people can have and celebrate in such a fashion. Usually, when you approach this anniversary, people are getting laid off. Here’s your watch, goodbye. This is one of the few industries where you can improve your skills and continue to be thanked instead of relegated to the trash heap. Your “Don’t Fight The Sea” single has basically reunited the band. That particular song has all of the Beach Boys singing these beautiful harmonies on it. I think it showed everybody that we can still do it. It started out as a Red Cross Benefit single, for the tsunami. Actually, it started out as a Mike Love-Al Jardine thing, many years ago, but we never had a chance to finish it. Recently I issued a vinyl single on it for the Red Cross Tsunami effort, yes. It just sold beautifully, raised 10 or 15,000 dollars for the Red Cross and hopefully we can do some more. I’m gonna have a vinyl release of the record for Record Store Day. Your co-writer on that song is the great singer-songwriterenvironmentalist Terry Jacks. He was the inspiration for the song. He had written his own, sort of Canadian version of it, and when I head it I thought it would be a great Beach Boys song. So I Americanized it a bit, changed some of the Canadian metaphors. Like “I was muckin’ about when the tide went out. I changed it to “I was messin’ around when the tide went down. “ Now that sounds like a Beach Boys song. Yeah, it sounded just like a Beach Boys song to me, too. But with a more serious bent. And now here we are talking about it after all these years. Mike Love is all excited about it now, too. He also realizes how important it is to conserve the ocean. All the guys are behind it. For the uninitiated, Terry Jacks had that big hit with “Seasons In The Sun” in 1974. But you guys also did a version of it around that same time. We did. I thought it would be a great Beach Boys song. But we recorded it and for some reason, it just didn’t resonate. So the guys put it on the shelf and Terry goes home and goes, “You know what, I’m gonna go home and do it, anyway. They don’t know what they’re missing if they don’t put this thing out.” That sucker, which was his first [solo] single, sells 12 million records! So there’s something here, between Terry and myself, I think this is gonna be a pretty big one, too. How will you promote it? We just did a video for it. It’s gonna be like an Imax quality video with the most incredible oceanic scenes, like on the level of a major motion picture. And shot on actual film. There’ll be cameos of each guy and also Paul McCartney did a cameo. And even Katy Perry! Paul looks right in the camera and says, “Don’t Fight The Sea, lad.” I’m trying to get President[s] Clinton and Bush, so it could be major deal. Then it will be a solid political statement as well. Literally. But we only have one ocean. It’s all connected. And that big plastic pool of crap out in the pacific has everybody worried, so we’ve got to get it together that’s one good thing we can do with this anniversary is bring some light to that. All I know is, I police my little area. I pick up plastic off the beach
and streams near my house. In fact, you just gave me an idea. In the part where [the late Beach Boys singer-guitarist] Carl Wilson sings this haunting bridge, it’s like a Sargasso Sea part, where they get this doldrums thing, I’m gonna have them take a picture of that cesspool of that plastic in the pacific, and right in the middle of that section. It says, “I’m caught on the wind, and the tides comin’ in, the fog’s closing in over me, My life is on hold, my bloods running cold, for years I’ve been adrift on the sea.” That’s pretty heavy. Everytime there’s a new Beach Boys project, it seems that you are the instigator. Well, Dennis Wilson pushed for the “Surfin’” single. He was the real surfer in the band. We are all singing Four Freshmen tunes around the piano before that. Just trying to harmonize together. He comes along and says, “Hey, why don’t you write a song about Surfin‘?” Just as simple as that. But without your mom, that first record wouldn’t have happened. Oh yeah, mom! You know, we had to go and audition for her. See, the guys ran out of food money. Their parents had gone to Mexico, so they said, “Hey Al, um, what do you think, can we borrow some money from your mom?” I said, “Well yeah, hey if we’re gonna do this we’re gonna need instruments. I know where I can get a stand-up bass and drums and some equipment.” They said, “Well, can we get some money?” I said, “Well, you’ll have to come over to the house and let’s sing it for her.” So we just went over and sang a capella for her. She said, “Ok, boys, I love that one. I’ll lend you the money.” So that’s how we got our first record made. And that led to the historic Capitol deal. Absolutely. It led to a three song demo, which included “Surfer Girl” and “Surfin’ Safari” and now, here we are 50 years later, making a new one. You seem so SoCal but these days you’re much further up the road. Up in the Monterey Peninsula of California. I’m more a Northern California guy now. Neil Young and I kinda share the same kind of neighborhood, up in the Redwoods. So that’s how I got him on the project, singing about the Salinas Valley, where Steinbeck was raised and wrote about that whole area, Cannery Row, you know? That’s where I came up with the “California Saga” idea on the new album. There’s a great video of the new version of “Help Me Rhonda” with Steve Miller and Flea and some other friends. What a weird one that is, but they’re both blues guys. And Norton Buffalo, the late great harmonica player, did the break;
I asked him to do it in the “Fannie Mae” tradition, like the Buster Brown [1959 R&B hit] version, because that kinda was the inspiration for our first version of “Rhonda.” So I wanted to bring that back and have Steve sing with me. Then Flea, holy crap, he comes in with that bass of his and takes it to another level. All the guests on your album define the wide demographic of Beach Boys fans. Yes, there’s this amazing synergy between the up-and-comers and the late bloomers and the old timers. Are you planning the songs for the set? I hope we do some a capella on this tour. I’d like to try to sing one nice a capella song. I think we’re talking about this thing called “Our Prayer,” a real beautiful thing off of Smile but that‘s a pretty monstrous song, I don‘t know. That’s a lot of harmony. There have been rumors of a Beach Boys tour for a while, then the Grammy performance back in February sort of caually announced it. I think it was always going to happen. Brian’s folks, I don’t know why, never wanted to commit, I think the pressure became too great. And Capitol thought it would be great to have an album so one thing led to another and it kinda fell together in a good way. It helps to have a record behind it, you know, not just a reunion by itself. And right now you are wrapping up that very record. Right now, yes! Our first single will be “That’s Why God Made The Radio,” it’s kind of an interesting song, full of harmonies and very lush arrangements. I brought in a song called “Waves Of Love,” which is a bonus track on my album but this will be a different version. It’s an up-tempo shuffle like “Help Me, Rhonda.” A very strong, guitar-driven song. I think people will like it. The Beach Boys play Chastain Park at 7:30 pm on April 28. ISRAELI PUNKS
Useless ID On Joining Fat Wreck Chords, Jello Biafra & Their New Album, Symptoms BY JOHN B. MOORE
B
EING A PUNK ROCKER IN Southern California, Boston or even a city like Topeka is not exactly the height of rebellion in 2012. Playing in a punk band in Israel? That’s punk rock! The guys from Useless ID have been counting off “1,2,3,4” in Haifa City for nearly two decades now. They’ve toured the globe, put out eight records and shared the stage with everyone from NOFX to The Vandals (but not Jello Biafra, as you’ll soon learn). But they’ve never put out an album on the punk rock indie Fat Wreck Chords…until now. Symptoms, the band’s latest is a little more introspective than previous efforts, but still a pretty damn fine collection of spirited pop punk rock. Guitarist Ishay Berge was nice enough to answer a few questions via e-mail recently. He spoke about Symptoms, the futility of Biafra’s Israeli protest and how they finally ended their long flirtation with their latest label and got in bed with Fat. How did you guys finally end up on Fat Wreck Chords? We always had been in touch with (Fat) Mike and people that work at the label. In the 90’s we’d totally crash at Floyd’s apartment, toured with many bands on the label and had songs on compilations such as Rock Against Bush and Short Music For Short People. We were always fans of the music the label has put out and also the way the label worked, so it was something that we always wanted. After we finished recording our new album, our producer, Bill Stevenson gave a copy to Mike. After awhile we got in touch with Mike, and that was it. Speaking of the new record, what can you tell me about Symptoms? We had a really good time recording it with Bill (Stevenson), Jason (Livermore) and Andrew (Berlin) at the Blasting Room, it was our third time over at their studio and it had an amazing, family getting together-like vibe in there. It was really smooth getting the songs arranged and tracked down, we would try a lot of different idea’s and throughout the sessions it was clear that we’re all into pushing the songs to their ideal place from the early arrangement stage to the final mix. The record seems a little more introspective. Was that on purpose? Our singer and songwriter, Yotam (Ben Horin), has something that I think many songwriters have, which is a lot of inspiration and fascination with the darker aspects of life. A lot of times people would expect us to be more political or have more of a pissed off massage based on the fact that we are from Israel and there is a lot to be said about the Middle East politics. But if you sat down with
PG 26 • April 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
Yotam for a beer, you could tell that there’s far more to him than just where he is from, and that his stories are really moving and can actually reflect on global situations.
You mentioned that you recorded this one with Bill Stevenson again. Having recorded with him in the past, has the back and forth between Bill and the band changed over the course of these records? Off course it got better with every album we made together, but honestly, we hit it off so well when we first came over to the Blasting Room about 10 years ago, that it had just became more fun to look forward to the next session. And our time together just gets more inspiring and fun with every album we do together. I do think that we, like Rise Against and many other bands by now, cannot imagine working on an album with a different team, as it really does seem like it could not get close with someone else producing. Is it intimidating at all recording at the Blasting Room studios where so many great records have been made before? Not at all. I think of it more like it’s important to be attentive and open minded and from there on it just pretty much is punk rock music school to the point where Bill would track vocals and go like “Ian would yell it like that”, or “Milo would have sang it like that” and it’s just amazing to realize that you’re being trained by the same guy that kind of told all your favorite punk rock bands how to do it. You guys were supposed to play a big show with Jello Biafra last year in Israel, but he pulled out citing political reasons. Does that happen often? That was a big letdown for everybody involved, including Jello himself. It does happen often, and the main problem with this boycott is that it’s kind of like pissing in the wind. Even if they could get Madonna or Elton John to boycott Israel, and that would have made a lot of press and get many people talking, that wouldn’t change the way our government works or make them open their minds to the conflict and fixing the problems we have here. All it would do is make their fans bummed. The cancellation made no headlines and no one really heard of it but the fans. Maybe if he would have played and talked his talks on stage that would have made headlines and actually helped with what the people who supports the boycott (were) trying to achieve. Will you be playing the U.S. at all this year? We’re working on it. We used to tour in the U.S all the time and we all miss it a lot, so even though we plan a lot of touring for 2012, we totally work on getting some touring done in the U.S and Canada.

MUSIC
JUMP IN! A Great Big Pile of Leaves On Expanding & Touring With Acts Like Motion City Soundtrack
BY JOHN B. MOORE
B
ROOKLYN-BASED INDIE ROCK trio A Great Big Pile of Leaves never really waited around for help in getting their music out to the masses. They self-produced their first EP, The Fiery Works, and made it available as a free download on their website. Word of mouth quickly spread quickly online, so they gave their new fans another free, self-produced download, The Fiery Works II. Originally started as a duo by singer/guitarist Peter Weiland and drummer Tyler Soucy, they added bassist Tucker Yaro, hit the road and came back in time to record and self-produce their first full length Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex. Never ones to let too much time pass between releases, they also put out a couple of acoustic EPs through Boston’s Topshelf Records. It’s a bit surprising then, after plenty of experience working without a producer, that they’d bring in outside help for their latest 7-inch single. The fact that one of their musical influences was taking the producer’s seat may have had something to do with the decision. Soucy spoke with us recently about the founding of the band, touring with groups like Motion City Soundtrack and Say Anything, and working with a producer for the first time. I know its taboo to ask this question, but I have to: How did you come up with the band name? There has to be a story there. It was actually one of Pete’s first suggestions and it seemed to be the name that we kept circling back to, and one day it just stuck. I think it’s pretty memorable and I’d like to think it stands out from the sea of band names out there today. As far as the meaning of the band name, it’s a throwback to being a kid and having fun. We grew up in New England, so we would play
in leaves as much as we played in snow. I find that the name also compliments our music style very well, and lends itself to the fun and colorful visuals that we really enjoy.
You guys originally started out as a duo. How did the dynamic of the band change with the addition of Tucker Yaro? Tucker is a classically trained jazz musician, so he brings a lot to the table. He’s also our go-to mechanic and overall fix-it-man on the road. He fit into the band right off the bat. We’re all really laid back dudes with the same sense of humor. As far as the bands dynamic, he has just as much input as far as song compositions as Pete and I, and is a huge help when it comes to studio situations (setting up guitars, getting sounds...etc). You worked with a producer recently for your 7-inch. Is this the first time you’ve worked with someone outside the band? Yeah, we worked with Mike Poorman (formerly with Hot Rod Circuit) on this record. We’ve been Hot Rod Circuit fans for a long time, and we actually played with them at Krazy Fest last year. Our friendship grew from that day forward and when this opportunity came up, he was the first person we had in mind. I think we were slightly scared about having someone join our little triangle after producing four EPs and a full-length on our own, but he made it apparent that he wasn’t there to change anything about the band, just to enhance the parts he enjoyed the most. It was a really positive experience and there was no pressure at all, plus we came out with three songs that we’re all extremely excited about. Have you started writing for the next full length yet?
We’ve been writing for the next record since late last year, but put it on hold for a little while to focus on the 7 inch that we just recorded for Motion City Soundtrack’s/Mad Dragon Record’s “Making Movies” series. There are probably about ten solid song ideas that we just started to track demos for, so we’re going to keep working on that until we leave for tour and then finish up writing and demoing when we get back. We’re aiming to have the record written before the summer and then hopefully get into the studio by June. You’ve been on some amazing tours. What have you learned about yourself as a band playing outside of New York? We’ve learned that we have been extremely spoiled on a lot of these runs. Luckily our first tour ever was with Motion City Soundtrack, Say Anything and Saves the Day, so we were out with friends and the shows were packed. It was a pretty comfortable situation. On the flip-side, we were this very inexperienced band being tossed in front of huge crowds right off the bat and I think we grew a lot in a short amount of time. Some of the best advice we’ve gotten came from The Appleseed Cast guys though: We used to drive
through the night to every show, and they helped us realize how stressful and dangerous that is. They basically forced us to get hotel rooms, and that was the point where it just hit us and touring became a totally different experience. Do you all share similar musical influences? For the most part, I think we enjoy a lot of the same music, but we come from different musical backgrounds as far as our instruments are concerned. Tucker studied Jazz Performance in college, Pete somehow taught himself how to be a crazy guitarist, and I did the whole concert band and marching band thing through middle school and high school. We’re all into a wide variety of music, from Neil Young, Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, to Weezer, Piebald and Jurassic 5, and I’m sure that is subconsciously coming through somehow when we’re writing music. What’s next for the band? After this tour with Mansions and Young Statues, the main focus is on the next full-length and finding the right home for it. Beyond that, hopefully more awesome tours!
ALBERT MAZIBUKO,
Ladysmith Black Mambazo member since 1969. BY BRET LOVE
Y
OU’VE BEEN WITH LADYSMITH Black Mambazo for over 40 years now. What is it that keeps you passionate about performing after 4 decades? Meeting the people every night. It never gets old for us to travel and sing for audiences, and to see them react so positively to our shows. When we meet them, they tell us how special the night was. We seem to touch people in a very spiritual way. They know our country’s story, our history, and seem to feel close to us. We love this! This year marks the 50th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment. As a South African, how do you feel about the way your country has changed in that time? Well, it’s been a long struggle. When we gained our freedom in the early 1990s, many people thought everything would change and all would be better. But it’s been a slow change. The impact that apartheid had on the black population wasn’t, and isn’t, something that could go away overnight. Deep scars have affected many generations. The lack of education and care for the people has left millions in deep need of help. But the change is happening. We can see this every day. We know it will be better tomorrow.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo has become South Africa’s foremost cultural ambassadors. What makes South African culture so unique? There certainly is a strong connection between our country and the outside world because of what we went through, and because of Nelson Mandela and what he did. I think working with Paul Simon on the Graceland CD– bringing all that beautiful music to the world– brought a strong connection between our people and the rest of the world. There’s a 25th anniversary edition of Graceland set to come out soon. What are your favorite memories from working with Paul Simon? We always remember our first trip to Abbey Road Studios, where we met with him and began recording. It was a very special time. How did your career change after the success of Graceland? We met the world and the world embraced us. It began a 25-year run of touring, recording, Grammy Awards, and so many wonderful moments. It allowed us to represent our country all over the world. We love meeting people and telling them about South Africa. We always tell them to visit, that we need their support. We love to share the beauty of South Africa with people. One of your most famous performances came at President Mandela’s inauguration in 1994, at the end of the apartheid era. Can you talk about your feelings on that special day? My goodness, that was so special! It was probably the most special day in our lives. Mandela became President of the country after being in prison, after our people had no freedom for so long. Then, we are
asked to sing at the event. Amazing! It made us feel human, like this was our world now to make of it what we can. Ladysmith Black Mambazo was given a role– a mission– to represent this new country. It was, and is, something we take very seriously. The band has changed members a few times over the past 40 years, with Joseph’s sons now forming the core of the group. How has that changed the sound? Actually, the band has been very stable over the past 20 years. During the 1960s and 1970s there were many changes, but by 1980 we were very stable. Joseph Shabalala, our leader, found the voices he wanted. This became the “Graceland” group, which sang and toured with Paul Simon. In 1991-1993 we lost three members to death and retirement, and Joseph brought in three of his sons. In 1999 another son joined. So, since 1993 it’s been very stable. When those changes happened, it gave us a good energy. The sons were ready to bring what they had to the stage. Mambazo will continue on through them and their children. It’s a group that could continue on for many years. You’ve collaborated with different people over the years, from Dolly Parton to Josh Groban. Why is it important for LBM to work with artists from other countries and musical genres? We love to share our music and when we join others, especially from different styles and countries, it allows new and interesting sounds to happen. We love trying new things. We think the sound of our voices brings a beautiful flavor to many genres. Of course it’s wonderful to reach new audiences. So many people have discovered us through working with these other artists. Josh Groban fans are some of our strongest supporters. It’s been a beautiful experience meeting new fans this way.
Your new album features quite a few of those collaborations from over the years. Are there any particular artists that you personally felt a strong connection with? Yes, there is a new CD that has many songs we have sung with other people since 1986. It brings back so many great memories for us. We’ll always have a strong connection to Paul Simon and those songs. I’ve read about the LBM Foundation Joseph founded. Can you tell me a little bit about the foundation’s mission and its work with South Africa’s Zulu children? We want to give back to the young people in our country, especially from where we lived in Ladysmith, South Africa. It’s important to help the young generation become better than the last. We raise money to bring the social activities like singing and dancing so they know who they are and where their history is. We feel it’s very important to keep your cultural identity to help make you a better stronger person. People have been speculating about Joseph’s retirement for years. Have you discussed when the time will come to hand the group over to the next generation? Several years ago someone asked him what will happen when he retires and he said that he will let his sons take over the group. But he loves to be out singing for the people still. We love having him leading us. I really don’t think he will retire anytime soon. He has said he will only retire when it’s time to leave this world. I believe that. What is your dream for the group’s future? To continue to create new music for people to enjoy, and to continue to travel the world and spread a message of Peace, Love and Harmony. What could be better than that?! insiteatlanta.com • April 2012 • PG 27

WRATH OF THE TITANS
Getting Ready for UFC 145 with Dana White, Jon Jones and Rashad Evans
BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
W
HILE MIXED MARTIAL arts’ stranglehold on the U.S. sports market isn’t quite where Dana White, president of MMA’s largest organization, Ultimate Fighting Championship, wants it to be, it’s getting stronger. Last year, in fact, the New York Times said the franchise was worth over $1 billion. We’re guessing those numbers will only grow bigger if White keeps lining up prize fights like he has for Atlanta’s UFC 145 on April 21. The headlining bout pits light heavyweight champ Jon “Bones” Jones against former friend and training partner “Suga” Rashad Evans. INsite was ringside for a pre-fight presser with White, Jones and Evans a little while back. Umm, let’s just say things got testy…

People who say there is no emotion to a fight, they are not really in the moment, really, to fight. I am going to have to just be really conscious of it and not get too carried away with it. But me and Jon, we competed against each other before, and we always bring it whenever we compete, even in practice. So, I’m thinking we are going to find our rhythm and just go at it like we always do. We just go at it and battle back and forth.
Jon, you were a commentator on the last show when Rashad was fighting and you were EXTREMELY confident when you were commentating and extremely happy that this fight was going to happen. Can you comment a little bit on that? Jon: Yeah. There was like this whole Rashad 2.0 thing that was getting started, and then his first fight in the new camp, you know, his body looked better, I saw some differences in his game. [But in] the last fight, I didn’t see any progression

You guys love smiling. I wonder if either of you guys can see yourself smiling at the end of five rounds on fight night. Rashad: This fight won’t go five rounds. Jon: Mark his words. Rashad, a lot of Jones’ opponents seem to be frozen by the distance and timing that he brings. How much advantage do you think you have in the fact that you trained with him? Rashad: I’ve got a big advantage. I know what he is going to do and just knowing the range that I need to fight him at. Just training with him and knowing what he is good at and knowing where he likes to fight at, I already know what I need to do. So, I am not going to get in there and get frozen and watch what he throws, just get in there and just mix it up and we will see what happens.
What did you like about coming to Atlanta [in 2008] that made you want to bring the fight back? And why did you want these two guys for this fight? Dana White: Well, it was a very successful event the first time. It is a huge market for us. You know, we’ve been traveling all over the world and going into all these new markets, and it was time to come Do you think you can back to Atlanta. 2012 MLB PREVIEW BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
I
NJURIES, TRADES AND FREE-AGENT signings are a natural part of baseball. Every year a fresh group of players has something to prove to teammates. With this ’12 season though, there seems to be more of a need than ever for validation on the diamond. In San Francisco, 2010 NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey’s gotta show that the ankle that was devastated in 2011 has healed. In St. Louis, the Cardinals have to prove their World Series win didn’t come by accident. And over in Anaheim, new franchise face Albert Pujols needs to show that the second act to his Hall of Fame career will be as memorable as the first. But these aren’t the only instances. If you look at each MLB dugout, you’ll find at least one player with something to prove.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
1. Philadelphia Though a few years away from 90s Braves futility, we’re starting to wonder if these Phillies (one World Series win in last five playoff attempts) are more bark than bats. Hunter Pence (22 HRs, 97 RBI) will probably decide ‘12’s fate. 2. Los Angeles Dodgers Matt Kemp (MVP runner-up) and Clayton Kershaw (Cy Young winner) will again carry the loads, but to give San Francisco a seasonlong fight, Dee Gordon must do some heavy lifting from the leadoff spot. 3. Cincinnati We all love the power in Ohio (Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Ryan Ludwick), but it’s the arms who are truly holding the Reds’ postseason key. Here’s hoping Matt Latos (9-14, 3.47 ERA) can lock the opposition down from the mound. 4. Miami A new name. A new stadium. A new logo. A new manager (Ozzie Guillen). A new shortstop (Jose Reyes). A new closer (Heath Bell). Unfortunately, if Hanley Ramirez isn’t happy with his third base shift, this fish tale will get old really fast. 5. Atlanta It’s a given that most eyes will be on future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones in this swan song of a season. Still, if the Bravos are to make the playoffs for just the second time since ‘05, they’ll need Jason Heyward and Brian McCann’s bats most. 6. St. Louis For the Cards to repeat their shocking playoff jaunt, they’ve got to fill Pujols’ big shoes. If Carlos Beltran and Adam Wainwright can stay away from the trainer, and Matt Holliday can stay locked in on fastballs, they just might. 7. San Francisco Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, a nearly unmatched pitching duo, could have even more wins if they had some run support. We’re anticipating Posey will help out. Not expecting a repeat from Melky Cabrera (18 HR, 87 RBI) though. 8. Milwaukee Many baseball minds have said Ryan Braun was the Brewers’ most important everyday player for a few seasons now. With Prince Fielder gone, the leftfielder (.332 BA, 33 HR, 111 RBI) finally has his chance to prove it. 9. Arizona Okay, we admit to our bromance with Justin Upton. The rightfielder is awesome. If we knew Chris Young would have a more patient ap-
proach at the plate, we would have shown the D-Backs more love as a team. 10. Washington The masses will focus on the phenoms (Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper), but pundits will keep an eye on Jayson Werth, the freeswinging outfielder who needs to double last year’s 20-HR, 58-RBI output. 11. Pittsburgh The Pirates are close to being relevant again, but they’re still a few sluggers away. Outfielder Andrew McCutchen (20-20 man in ’11) was close to being a star last year. He’s officially one now. 12. New York Mets If two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana can get that fastball and circle change working like they did in Minnesota, the Mets may throw us a curveball and not end up as NL East floor mats. 13. Chicago Cubs With this suspect middle of the lineup (Marlon Byrd, Bryan LaHair) and top of the pitching order (Ryan Dempster, Matt Garza), the “Lovable Losers” have little chance of finishing outside the bottom of the NL Central. 14. Colorado Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki (nearly 200 RBI combined in ’11) might not be mainstream stars, but we see their worth. As for the Rockies, umm, rocky pitching, we haven’t seen much of anything yet. 15. San Diego It’s a shame that Petco Park, one of our favorite stadiums, has to house such putrid baseball. Yes, new slugger Carlos Quentin will be a treat to look at, but the rest of the lineup will be a complete eyesore. 16. Houston Carlos Lee led the Astros in every offensive category worth mentioning last year. And now that we’ve analyzed the roster, he’s the only player in the Opening Day lineup worth mentioning here. NL PLAYOFF TEAMS Philadelphia, L.A., Cincinnati, Miami and Atlanta
NL CHAMPIONSHIP L.A. over Philadelphia, 4-3
1. Los Angeles Angels When you add Pujols, one of the five best hitters ever, to your lineup, you become a playoff favorite. When you top that with pitcher C.J. Wilson (16-7, 2.94 ERA), you transform into INsite’s World Series favorite. 2. Boston From the glimpses of the BoSox we’ve seen this spring, they look to be a focused bunch that won’t allow last September’s slip to hold them down. To reassure it doesn’t, the front office brought in upbeat skipper Bobby Valentine. 3. Detroit The best pitcher in the AL (Justin Verlander) joins forces with one of the game’s top hitters (Fielder). On paper, the Tigers look to seal up the pennant by May. In practice, it’ll probably take ‘til early August. 4. New York Yankees We already know about the heavyweight hitters (Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira), but with the acquisition of Seattle flame-thrower Michael Pineda, the Yanks’ rotation has some punch now too. 5. Texas During this past offseason, the Rangers made some good headlines (signing Japanese pitching sensation Yu Darvish) and a few bad ones (Josh Hamilton’s alcohol relapse). When the season gets going, we’re betting the bats get all the attention. 6. Tampa Bay The Rays were 25th in the League in batting average a year ago. Sadly, all B.J. Upton (.243) and Evan Longoria (.244) can look to for support in that area are newcomers Carlos Pena (.225) and Luke Scott (.220). 7. Cleveland If the Betty White sitcom Hot in Cleveland wanted some real laughs, all it had to do was talk to the folks who doubted the Indians’ return the decency. Just two games short of .500 in ’11, the team’s young core is no joke.
8. Toronto The Blue Jays can’t pout about being in the game’s toughest division. What they can do is find the amazing Jose Bautista (43 HRs, 103 RBI) and ace Ricky Romero (15 wins, 2.92 ERA) more help on the roster. 9. Oakland Even though the A’s made a few splashy signings (Cuban star Yoenis Cespedes, Bartolo Colon and Manny Ramirez), they’re still a few years off from swimming with the AL’s big boys. 10. Chicago White Sox Thought John Carter’s box-office numbers were bad? You must not have seen Adam Dunn’s stat sheet. If the Sox have any chance to compete for a Wild Card, the first baseman can’t repeat a .159-hitting, 177-K campaign. 11. Kansas City The Royals will host the 83rd MLB All-Star Game on July 10. Don’t be surprised if leftfielder Alex Gordon is participating in it. As for the playoffs, the young team is still a year away from real thoughts of participating in that. 12. Minnesota Through all the injuries and slumps we’ve rooted for Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. It’s too bad their best days are behind them. New bat Josh Willingham (29 HRs, 98 RBI) won’t be able front the offensive load by himself. 13. Baltimore It’s hard to overlook the 4.89 team ERA, the worst in the Bigs. Harder still is pinpointing exactly what it’ll take for the young O’s hitters (Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Mark Reynolds) to take that next step. 14. Seattle The Mariners have finished last in scoring the past two years. Chone Figgins has forgotten how to hit. Ichiro has lost a few steps. Felix Hernandez has his hands full pitching…Let’s go ahead and make that three years in a row. AL PLAYOFF TEAMS LA Angels, New York Yankees, Boston, Detroit and Texas AL CHAMPIONSHIP LA Angels over Boston, 4-2 WORLD SERIES LA ANGELS OVER LA DODGERS, 4-1

COLUMN
OUR FAVORITE THINGS BY B. LOVE
I
’VE WRITTEN IN THIS COLUMN before about how much I like ExOfficio’s clothes for outdoor adventurers. But we really fell in love with their BUGSAWAY (www.exofficio. com) line last month during our 10-day expedition in the Peruvian Amazon. The stylish pants and shirts are available in men’s and women’s sizes, roll up easily for packing light, can be hand-washed/ dried quickly and, best of all, use patented “Insect Shield” technology to protect you from mosquitos, ants, flies, chiggers and other biting insects. We wore them every single day of our trip, and our only regret is that we didn’t sleep in them. Now that Spring has sprung and warmer weather is fast approaching, we’re starting to shed our Winter weight and get back in shape for Summer. We’ve become addicted to MAMMA CHIA (www. mammachia.com), a “vitality beverage” made from chia seeds and organic fruits in delicious flavors such as Blackberry Hibiscus, Raspberry Passion and Cranberry Lemonade. The consistency (which reminds me of bubble tea) may seem strange, but the drinks offer 2000mg of Omega-3, 10g of fiber, 33mg of calcium, 4g of protein and a ton of antioxidants. Best of all, they taste great and have only 110 calories! I’ve been a fan of global culture since I launched a world music column back in 1994. So I was delighted to discover ETHNOTEK, a young company with the tagline “Celebrating & promoting world culture one bag at a time.” Founded by veteran traveler Jake Orak, Ethnotek’s line of backpacks and messenger bags boast limited edition designs hand-crafted in far-flung locales such as Ghana, Guatemala, India and Vietnam. They’re acquired through direct trade (i.e. going there), which eliminates the middleman and ensures that the money is directly going to the local artisans. But the coolest feature is that the “THREADS” are interchangeable, meaning each bag has limitless design possibilities.
