A ‘J’ FOR EFFORT BET personality and Think Like a Man star Terrence J talks about the long road to overnight movie success BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
F
OR THINK LIKE A MAN TO BE Terrence Jones’ first starring role in a major motion picture, he certainly nails his character. In the ensemble romantic romp, Terrence plays Michael, a smart, loving young man who just happens to be the biggest mama’s boy in cinematic history. He’s hugged up on his mom so tightly you won’t help but wonder how closely the story hits home. But then you start to think, Could a mama’s boy take the rejection he did from movie producers early on and keep at it? Would a mama’s boy be able to handle the daily stresses that come with being cohost on BET’s popular video show 106 & Park? Can a mama’s boy deal with pointblank questions about his network’s portrayal of blacks? Well, Terrence J does, and has no problem talking about all of that and much more with INsite.

Xanadu uproariously sends up Olivia N e w t o n - J o h n' s notorious 1980 film of the same name, in which a featherhaired Greek muse with an Australian accent descends from Mount Olympus to modern-day California to help a hunky young man open a roller disco. The award-winning playwrighting duo Larry Larson and Eddie Levi Lee return to Horizon Theatre with the world premiere of their new play The Waffle Palace. Inspired by real life news stories about Waffle House restaurants, the play follows a Midtown diner owner, his staff, and a hilarious cast of customers as they battle to keep The Waffle Palace open against encroaching real estate developers. The crazy cast of characters in The Waffle Palace include a drag queen, a suburban couple, and a college professor turned garbage man. Though very different, the Waffle Palace regulars form their own sort of community, or as the play emphasizes, a family.

HAPPY ENDINGS
Jennifer Love Hewitt On Her Sexy New Show, The Client List BY ALEX S. MORRISON
L
AST TIME WE SAW JENNIFER LOVE Hewitt, she was communicating with paranormal specters on The Ghost Whisperer. Now she’s back with a decidedly more intriguing Lifetime Television series, The Client List, in which she wears skimpy lingerie while giving “servicing customers” a whole new meaning. Her character, Riley Parks, is a single mom in a tiny Texas town who turns to giving massage therapy (of the sexual variety) to support her two kids. We recently spoke with the 32-year-old actress, who also serves as executive producer on the show, to find out what attracted her to such a risqué role. What made you want to be a part of the TV version of this, after starring in the film version? We joked around, when we were doing the movie, about how fun it would be to turn this into a series and really get in deeper with the lives of the women in the spa and everything. So, when the movie did really well, I talked it over with everybody and said, “Let’s pitch it and see what they think,” and here we are. What originally really drew you to the role of Riley Parks? I just thought it was really interesting, even with the movie. I think it’s interesting to create empowerment in a woman, who essentially could feel powerless and who could find herself in danger and could look at the situation she’s in, if she wanted to, as not very empowering. This is actually very powerful. She’s making these decisions and she’s making them consciously, and she’s growing sexually, emotionally, physically and mentally, in this job. She’s connecting, in a real, human way, with the human condition and human spirit and hearts of the people on her table. It’s super-powerful. I was really interested in that. I just thought that that was really cool, and a neat message to send out. What do the men in your life think of you playing such a provocative role, week to week? The men in my life are our crew members and the actors that I work with on the massage table, and they’re pretty happy about it because they’re usually getting massaged. My one male dog is very jealous because I’m gone a lot with the hours. I have had a lot of my guy friends be like, “So, have you learned anything in massage yet? Can I get a massage?” I’m like, “I just worked 14 hours, so no, you cannot have a massage. That’s not what we do there.” I think people are having a pretty good time with it.
How did you mentally prepare for your first scene at the massage parlor? It was a little nerve-wracking, the first day, for sure. Essentially, even though we’re actors, the guys are strangers to me, at the time, and I’m there in lingerie. But, I will say that the guys that we’ve hired so far have just been such gentlemen. They’ve been so lovely. I think it’s awkward for them also because I‘m in lingerie and they’re in pretty much nothing, and we’re in front of so many people. It is a very intimate thing to have to massage people, so it does take a couple of takes to feel comfortable with it. What research did you do for this? Did you actually go to massage parlors? No, I chose not to. For me, the funny thing is that, even though the show has this provocative setting, and I know that what people are talking about is this happy ending aspect of the show, for me, the part that I did more research on was being a single mom. I’m playing a Texas woman in economic struggles. She’s somebody who, emotionally, has to carry all of these secrets and all of this loneliness, and all of the stuff that she struggles with in the series. I’m from Texas. All the woman in my family are from Texas. So, I did more research in spending time with them and the women that I know who are single moms, and how they hold it all together with a full-time job, then I did the happy ending part of it because, for me, that’s not who Riley is. That’s where Riley finds herself, but that is not who she is, so I chose not to do research on that aspect of things because it wasn’t something that I needed to know how to do, in order to play the part.
How do you feel about women like Riley, who are caught between conventional work and compromising their morals to get ahead? I think it’s realistic. It may not make people comfortable, and it begs the question of, “Are there any other options?” For Riley, there aren’t, at the time. I think people are just going to have to try to be as non-judgmental about that as possible. But, I do think that this real. The story that we’re telling is real. There really are families that are put in these positions, economically. There are women out there who are in sex worker positions that you would run into at the grocery store with their hair piled on top of their head, and have no idea. So, I feel like, as women and men and people on the planet, you just have to do the best with what life gives you. Hopefully, on our show, people will have a lot of fun watching Riley do the best with what life has offered her, and it’ll be an interesting series. Given the double life that Riley leads, what’s the biggest challenge for you in playing her? Not eating pasta because I’m in lingerie all the time! I miss pasta so much. Probably my biggest challenge is not eating all the food that I want to eat sometimes.
PG 10 • May 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
There has been some backlash from massage therapists over the fact that this show portrays that happy ending element. How do you feel the show does, in terms of portraying the realities of this profession? I think from the word go, it’s a television series,
WE’RE JUST TRYING TO TELL A STORY AND WOULD NEVER, EVER DISRESPECT ANY PROFESSION, INTENTIONALLY. I HOPE THAT SOME OF THOSE PEOPLE EVENTUALLY WILL BE ABLE TO STOP FOR A SECOND, WATCH THE SHOW, AND FIND THEMSELVES ENJOYING IT.
so I don’t think anybody that’s watching it or turning it on is expecting me to keep the logistics of giving a proper massage. If they’ve seen our billboards, they’re definitely not expecting that. I played a medium on Ghost Whisperer for six years, and the mediums never complained at the fact that I had cleavage while I was crossing people over into the light. In fact, they were super-excited that a hot person was out there representing the medium. So, I have the utmost respect for the massage therapy industry. I get massages all the time. Friends of mine are massage therapists. I think it’s important for people to understand, and they will when they see the series, that we also give legitimate massages at the spa, so it’s not all happy endings. There is a client list and only those people get extras. The rest of the people are there for real massages. So, we do represent both sides of it. But, at the end of the day, it’s the reality. There really are these places and there are lots of people that go to them, and we’re just trying to entertain. We’re just trying to tell a story and would never, ever disrespect any profession, intentionally. I hope that some of those people eventually will be able to stop for a second, watch the show, and find themselves enjoying it. What is the most important lesson you learned about yourself, throughout your career? Oh, wow! That I bounce back pretty quick from rejection. I think, in 24 years in the business, you have a lot of doors slammed in your face, and a lot of people say mean things. Every time, I’m constantly surprised at how the span of time gets quicker that I get okay with it, and I’m over it. That’s been an interesting thing to learn.

TRUMP Movie Reviews CARD THE AVENGERS
When news broke that an Avengers movie was in the works, every fanboy’s mind immediately started racing with questions: Who would be in it? Which villains would they use? How would the Hulk look? But what many failed to ask was how these supersized personalities were going to mesh on one screen. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) have all proven they can handle the solo spotlight, but putting them in front of the same camera? Let’s not even mention the IMAX-sized screen needed for Hulk (Mark By B. Love Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. BULLY
In many ways, Alex is like any other middle school kid: He doesn’t want anyone to scuff his new sneakers, he digs girls, and he’s irritated by his little sister. But his comparative lack of social skills draw unwanted attention. Kids pick on him mercilessly at school for being “different.” He and his parents bring it up to officials, but they always have a “Kids will be kids” shrug about it. He asks for a scooter, a lifetime supply of gas and a raincheck on the third wish (the film’s running gag, which is never amusing). A frequent meeting place is L’Amour Flou (Love Is Blurred), a bar run by visuallychallenged Bruno Romy, who turns bumping into things into an art form. Algerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar (Fellag) understands his pupils since he’s dealing with similar issues in his own life. He bluffs his way into the job because no one else will take it, under the circumstances. Lazhar is applying for refugee status in Canada after his wife and children were apparently murdered in Algiers over a politically inflammatory book she had written. Lazhar’s survivor’s guilt is echoed by Simon (Émilien Néron), who feels responsible for his teacher’s death. Simon is a bit of a bully whose best friend is the teacher’s pet, Alice (Sophie Nélisse, who bears an extraordinary resemblance to the “E.T.”-era Drew Barrymore). Monsieur Lazhar weaves such cutting-edge issues as bullying and mistrust of foreigners into the standard classroom drama framework. Amazingly, all this was originally contained in a solo performance piece, which director Philippe Falardeau adapted into this moving film. –Steve Warren
THE RAVEN
THINK LIKE A MAN THE HUNTER
When a lone wolf tracks a tiger it creates a confused web that keeps you wondering which side you’re supposed to be on. Martin David (Willem Dafoe) is hired to go to Tasmania to kill what may be the last surviving Tasmanian tiger, a species long thought extinct, and bring back samples of its blood, tissue and organs for a mysterious German company. He’s billeted with the wife (Frances O’Connor) and two children of a man who went missing the year before. Most of the locals are hostile to outsiders but one (Sam Neill) practically forces himself on Martin as a guide. It looks as if the two men, one in his fifties and one in his sixties, will end up fighting over a woman in her forties; but that remains subtextual. The big issue locally is that eco-warriors are trying to protect the trees (and incidentally the tigers, if they exist), while logging is the only industry around. Martin is as confused as the viewer about everyone’s affiliation and motivation, especially when they try to kill him. It pretty much makes sense in the end but it’s a murky slog to get there, relieved mostly by the widescreen photography of the Tasmanian scenery. If you’re going to see The Hunter it makes sense to see it on as big a screen as possible. –Steve Warren
LOCKOUT
Familiar elements are recycled with everdiminishing returns in Lockout, which starts with balls-to-the-wall action and ends with rom-com clichés. Even the action pales in comparison with that of The Raid: Redemption. Most of this futuristic (2079) thriller takes place in M.S. One, an orbiting maximum-security prison. Emilie (Maggie Grace), the U.S. First Daughter, is visiting to find out if they’re using prisoners as guinea pigs to test the effects of deep space on people. The 497 prisoners break out and Emilie becomes the First Hostage. Sent to rescue her is Snow (Guy Pearce), an agent who was just framed for murder. He’s facing a 30-year sentence if he doesn’t accept the mission, but his real reason for going is to find the movie’s MacGuffin, a briefcase that disappeared from the murder scene. That’s the setup that brings Snow and Emilie together to bicker their way to love between increasingly contrived action sequences. The “deep space” aspect of the prison becomes questionable when it threatens to crash into the eastern seaboard of PG 14 • May 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
the U.S. for lack of navigation, setting up one of the final climaxes. Pearce and Grace are quite watchable and Joseph Gilgun amuses as a garden variety psycho prisoner. If you loved all these elements before, you should like them in Lockout. Just don’t expect anything new. –Steve Warren
MARLEY
“We came from a wailing environment,” explains Bob Marley’s longtime friend/bandmate, Bunny, on the origins of the Wailers’ famous name. Marley fans know Bunny’s speaking of Trenchtown, a Kingston, Jamaica slum. Poverty and crime were everywhere, but so was music. And Robert Nesta Marley followed the music. Well, technically, he followed Desmond Dekker, a young ska performer on Beverley’s Records. Back then, everyone knew Bob had a way with words, but his early solo stuff didn’t sell. Realizing the popular artists of the time, like the Temptations and Impressions, were all groups, Marley connected with Bunny, Peter Tosh and other talented locals. Of course, the Marley faithful know all of that. The thing that keeps this intimate documentary from feeling stale is that director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) meshes first-hand takes of commonly known facts (the failed assassination attempt, successful political unifications) with the unfamiliar (The Wailers’ courage-building practices in graveyards). The icon’s entire life is chronicled here, from his absentee white father, to his time working with Chrysler in Delaware, to the day he united with Lee “Scratch” Perry. Marley is coproduced by Bob’s eldest son, Ziggy, so the film could’ve easily glazed over Bob’s less-flattering womanizing side. But it doesn’t. Bob’s ex-wife, Rita, and other former flames speak openly and honestly about the man. And that’s the key word here— man. Bob Marley is revered to this day as a global icon, but the one thing this documentary shows very clearly is that this talented musical god was also a flawed man. –DeMarco Williams
MONSIEUR LAZHAR
Movies about educators say at least as much about their times as the teaching profession. In this year’s Canadian foreign-language Oscar nominee the students, 11 and 12, are dealing with issues of grief and guilt beyond their years. One of them found their beloved but unstable teacher hanging in the classroom, a suicide. Her emergency replacement,
In this film, Edgar Allen Poe is no longer revered as a literary talent, but that doesn’t stop someone from using his works as inspiration for a grisly series of murders in nineteenth century Baltimore. Live burial, being sliced in half by the bladed pendulum and other grisly fates strike victims who have been carefully arranged to pay homage to and garner the attention of Poe. Played by John Cusack, Poe is enlisted by the police to help solve the series of murders and try to determine when, where and how the killer will strike next. When Poe’s lady love is taken as a pawn to be used against him, his terror and panic take control of him when he needs his cool and intellect are needed most. The idea of the film could have made it great. The casting could have made it truly memorable. Unfortuantely, Cusack is once again made to be the quirky and witty dunce who has to overcome his own shortcomings to get the girl. Luke Evans, as Baltimore’s Detective Fields, is memorable. Unfortunately, one would think that a film using The Raven, The Telltale Heart, The Masque of the Red Death for inspiration would be something more substantial. What would’ve been a great short film was made into a feature-length film that never quite builds momentum and leaves viewers feeling somehow empty. –Justin Patterson
THE SALT OF LIFE
Trying to keep the “sex” in “sexagenarian” is the challenge for the protagonist of Gianni Di Gregorio’s bittersweet comedy. Gianni (Di Gregorio) has a wife (Elisabetta Piccolomini) but they sleep in separate bedrooms of the cramped apartment they share with their daughter (Teresa DiGregorio) and frequently her slacker musician boyfriend (Michelangelo Ciminale). Gianni is constantly being summoned to the considerably larger house of his manipulative, 90-something mother (Valeria de Franciscis). The women in Gianni’s life compete to spend his pension money. If the economy were better he might get a job as a doormat. His friend and attorney (Alfonso Santagata) counsels Gianni to find a woman, but that’s not as easy as it sounds – or as other, older men make it look. In his melancholy way Gianni’s as eager to get laid as the teenagers of American Pie, but less successful. The Salt of Life could lead to a rash of suicides among men past their sexual prime, but taken as entertainment it’s not bad. –Steve Warren
THINK LIKE A MAN
Hollywood was beside itself when Think Like a Man outpaced industry forecasts and captured the #1 box-office crown two weeks in a row in late April. What Tinseltown failed to put in the equation was that, regardless of stars’ skin tones, folks line up for movies that are good. They also tell their friends to see movies that are good. TLAM is quality filmmaking—not quality black filmmaking. What does “black” filmmaking mean anyways? Yes, it stars Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson and Gabrielle Union.
True, it deals with subject matter that resonates in African-American communities. But the movie also centers around universal premises of friendship, honesty and basic male-female differences. That said, all races will agree that the book this film is based on, Steve Harvey’s best-selling Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, is mentioned a lil’ too often in the script. Kinda feels infomercially at times. But none of that matters when Mr. Hart is on the screen. In TLAM he’s the hilarious, happily divorced guy who wants to spend all his money on strippers. Mixing all that debauchery with a grown-up kid (Jerry Ferrara), a mama’s boy (Terrence J), a hopeless romantic (Michael Ealy) and a recovering playboy (Romany Malco) just spells comedy. And not one line of it feels forced. The ladies have their moments –Wait, why isn’t Meagan Good as famous as Megan Fox again?!- but it’s the fellas who’ve made this a box-office smash. So, while you ponder if TLAM is right for you, do everybody behind this winner a favor: Call it a buddy comedy. Hell, call it a romantic comedy. But whatever you do, leave the lazy “black comedy” tag to the Hollywood geezers. –DeMarco Williams
THE THREE STOOGES
I was never a fan of the original Three Stooges but maybe I should give them another chance. Filming in Atlanta, Peter and Bobby Farrelly have done a remarkable job of recycling the old shtick and making it funny again – or, in my case, for the first time. Whether it’s just incredible stuntwork and editing or special effects, the choreography is amazing. So are the performances of Sean Hayes (Larry), Will Sasso (Curly) and Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe), recreating – or channeling - the originals to perfection. The plot – three morons try to raise money to save the orphanage they’ve lived in since infancy (they’re 35 now) from foreclosure – is timeless but the setting is contemporary-ish. At least there are jokes about iPhones and cameos by the Jersey Shore cast. Jane Lynch plays against type as the kindly Mother Superior. Larry David’s appearance as one of her nuns would seem to answer Barbra Streisand’s old question, “Would a convent take a Jewish girl?” Sofia Vergara plays a bombshell conspiring with her lover (Craig Bierko) to kill her husband (Kirby Heyborne). Maybe the world needs this kind of stupidity again, as it did in the Great Depression when the first Stooges popped up. It’s the best collection of yuks and nyuks out there right now. –Steve Warren
WE HAVE A POPE
Even while poking gentle fun at Vatican bureaucrats, Nanni Moretti’s dramedy about the naming of a new pope never becomes seriously irreverent. It sets up situations from at least two better films, then goes its own way instead of following their lead. While I applaud originality, Moretti proves different isn’t always better. After the death of a pope the College of Cardinals meets to elect his replacement – 108 fallible men choose one to be “infallible.” They pick Cardinal Melville (Michel Piccoli, who humanizes his character splendidly), but he freaks out as he’s about to be introduced to the waiting crowd. He doesn’t want to put his cold feet into “the shoes of the fisherman.” They bring in a psychoanalyst (Moretti) to examine him, creating a possible “King’s Speech” situation, but he’s no help; so they keep the shrink sequestered with the cardinals and take the new pope-elect outside the Vatican incognito to see another analyst. He runs away and goes on a “Roman Holiday,” but instead of mixing with the common people this failed actor gets involved with a theater troupe and hears the Gospel according to Chekhov while meanwhile, back in the Vatican, Moretti is reading the Bible and organizing a volleyball tournament! These irrelevant situations, while not a cardinal sin, certainly represent a wasted opportunity. –Steve Warren
FILM
SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW
BY RYAN LOFTIS
I
T’S AN UNWRITTEN RULE OF nature. As the temperature rises, so do the box office grosses. Why else would studios unleash their biggest movies – some with budgets of hundreds of millions – in the summertime? What movies are you going to want to see this summer? Read below and decide.
JUNE 1 SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN
The Stars: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron The Shill: The classic fairy tale takes a dark turn. Evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) wants to consume her stepdaughter, Snow White’s (Stewart), still-beating heart and sends a drunken huntsman (Hemsworth) to find her. The Skinny: This adult version of Snow White cost Universal more than $100 million. No doubt the studio hopes Stewart’s countless Twilight fans will show up in herds for this.
JUNE 8 MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED
The Stars: Voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Frances McDormand The Shill: Lion Alex (Stiller), zebra Marty (Rock), hippo Gloria (Smith) and giraffe Melman (Schwimmer) are still on their journey to the Central Park Zoo. They’re also fleeing Madame DuBois (McDormand), a crazy animal control officer. The Skinny: It’s all but assured that the third Madagascar film will be a big financial success just like its predecessors. The bigger question: Does it really take 7 years to get to New York City?
PROMETHEUS
The Stars: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce
The Shill: A spaceship crew heads to a distant planet that is home to a civilization that once visited Earth and left proof of its existence behind. Trouble ensues. The Skinny: Director Ridley Scott also directed the 1979 scifi classic Alien. He’s mostly remained silent about this movie’s plot, but has said that it has strands of “Alien DNA” and that Alien fans will be rewarded in “the final 12 minutes.” Intriguing.
JUNE 15 ROCK OF AGES
The Stars: Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand The Shill: Set in 1987, this adaptation of the Broadway musical has Cruise playing whiny rock star Stacee Jaxx. Hough and Boetta are new arrivals in Hollywood trying to make it in the music industry. The Skinny: Cruise memorably showed off his comic skills in Tropic Thunder. Seeing him do it for an entire movie should be a treat. It’s unclear how many people have even heard of the Broadway musical, but you can’t deny the star power on display here.
THAT’S MY BOY
The Stars: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester The Shill: A party animal (Sandler) who fathered a child with his teacher when he was just 13 suddenly shows up on the doorstep of his adult son (Samberg). The Skinny: After the historic debacle that was Jack & Jill Sandler literally has nowhere to go but up. Samberg is one
of the highlights of the current Saturday Night Live cast and deserves to have the kind of film breakthrough that cast mate Kristen Wiig had last year with Bridesmaids.
JUNE 22 ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER
The Stars: Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Rufus Sewell, Alan Tudyk, Mary Elizabeth Winstead The Shill: He was Honest Abe, our 16th president, the man considered by many historians to be America’s greatest chief executive ever. But did you know he also fought vampires who triggered the Civil War? No? This movie will teach you. The Skinny: This is one of the summer’s quirkiest movies. Appropriately it’s produced by Tim Burton, who knows a thing or two about quirky cinema. Walker could have a breakthrough role here.
SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD
The Stars: Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, Gillian Jacobs, Melanie Lynskey The Shill: Insurance executive Dodge (Carell) and free spirit Penny (Knightley) form a friendship in the weeks before an asteroid destroys Earth. The Skinny: Carell proved he had range beyond broad comedy with last year’s Crazy Stupid Love. Still, this seems like a hard sell to the summer audience.
TO ROME WITH LOVE
The Stars: Woody Allen, Alec Baldwin, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Penélope
Cruz, Ellen Page, Greta Gerwig, Roberto Benigni The Shill: Woody Allen’s latest focuses on a series of love stories played out in Italy’s capital. The Skinny: Last year’s Midnight in Paris was the biggest hit of Allen’s career. The formula of big stars in a foreign city should work for him again.
JUNE 29 G.I. JOE: RETALIATION
The Stars: Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis The Shill: After being framed for crimes against America and terminated by presidential order, the G.I. Joe team must fight back. The Skinny: On paper it seems odd to make a G.I. Joe sequel, since the first one grossed only $150 million against a $175 million budget in 2009 (it did gross more than $300 million worldwide). Obviously there’s something worthwhile about this one if big stars like Willis and Johnson were inspired to join up.
MAGIC MIKE
The Stars: Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn The Shill: Mike (Tatum) is a stripper who recruits a new dancer into his revue. McConaughey plays the revue’s owner. The Skinny: Director Steven Soderbergh was so impressed with the movie’s premise that he decided to delay his retirement to make it. Getting mainstream audiences as excited might be more difficult.
JULY 3 THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
The Stars: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Rhys Ifans, Chris Zylka The Shill: Spider-Man faces off against a new villian, the Lizard (Ifans). The Skinny: What happens when the star (Tobey Maguire) and director (Sam Raimi) of an incredibly successful series call it SEE MOVIES ON PAGE 22 insiteatlanta.com • May 2012 • PG 15

two-time Georgia Tree Farmer of the Year and a staunch proponent of environmental conservation. Appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to the Georgia Land Conservation Council in 2006, Leavell went on to co-found Mother Nature Network, one of the world’s most influential sources for environmental news. A longtime friend of his daughter, Amy, I was delighted to get a chance to speak with Leavell recently about sustainable farming, MNN and the future of the world’s forests.
I know all about your musical history, but have never heard the story of how you initially got into tree farming? It’s all my wife’s fault. Rose Lane and her family have been connected to the land for generations as farmers, tending livestock and tending forestlands. When we got married and I began to spend time with them, I gained an interest in land issues. In 1981, her grandmother passed away, leaving her with 1,000 acres of land and a house known as “The Home Place.” So it became our personal responsibility to carry on this heritage of stewardship. I looked into many options for land use– farming, cattle, pecan trees and other possibilities– but it seemed like they would take too much time if I wanted to continue to pursue my musical career. My brotherin-law, Alton White, suggested we consider planting what was an old crop field with pine trees for long term management. That set a light bulb off in my head, and I began to educate myself on forestry. I took a correspondence course while on tour with the Fabulous Thunderbirds in the early ‘80s, and Rose Lane and I began to manage the land for long-term forestry and wildlife. I am still a student of these things, and have found a deep passion for them.

What are the key lessons about sustainable forestry/farming you’ve learned? Steve at Mainly that it IS sustainable. If we manage our forests carefully and wisely, they will continue to give us their wonderful gifts– materials to make books, magazines, newspapers; materials to build our homes, schools and churches; materials to make musical instruments like my piano. They clean our air, clean our water, and provide home and shelter to all manner of wildlife. Now we are even exploring biomass for energy usage, which should be a component of our renewable energy quest.

What inspired you to launch Mother Nature Network back in 2009? My partner, Joel Babbit, has had a stellar career in Public Relations and Advertising. He called me in for a meeting and said, “My clients (Coca-Cola, Dell Computer, etc.) want to get their environmental messages out over the Internet. I’ve been trying to find a place I feel good about spending their budgets, but can’t find anything.” I was familiar with a number
IT, THAT’S A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE ON THIS PLANET. IF WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE THIS GROWTH, WE HAVE TO FIND BETTER WAYS TO DEAL WITH IT– BETTER WAYS TO KEEP OUR NATURAL LANDS NATURAL, AND OUR FORESTS AS FORESTS.
of sites, and there was not an iconic site for environmental issues. So he says, “Do you want to help me build one? I’ll resign my position if you’ll go in with me.” I was shocked, but I was in. Joel got backers to commit up to $10 million to start it, which amazed me. We put together a staff, opened offices in Atlanta and set to work. I saw it as an incredible opportunity to get good answers to good people that were seeking accurate information for how to be kinder to the environment and live more responsibly. We launched in January of ‘09, and we’ve recently passed the EPA in popularity. We’re getting over 4 million hits a month and over 24 million page views, which shows that folks all over the world are looking for ways to do better environmentally. This is not some phase: It’s a game-changer. We have to seek better ways to conserve, find better renewable energy sources, and use technology to the benefit of our environment. I think it’s the most important challenge for all of us now. What’s your take on why regular news outlets don’t give more coverage to environmental issues? I believe it’s because they want more sensational things. When you have something like the Japanese Tsunami or the BP Oil Spill, they’ll report about it. But if there are stories about some new kind of battery technology, they’d rather write about what J Lo wore at the Academy Awards or some political scandal. What we’re trying to do at MNN is focus on all aspects, not just of the environment, but on responsible living– safety issues, community development, biomicicry.... These may not be “sexy” issues, but they are important issues folks want to learn about. It’s responsible journalism as opposed to sensational journalism. This is a big election year. What role do you see government playing in our future sustainability? We can’t do everything with government, but government needs to play a role. I think creating incentives for renewable energy is important, both for companies engaging in wind, solar, biomass and such, as well as individuals that want to install geo-thermal or solar systems, better
insulate their homes and such. There should be incentives for hybrid cars, both in manufacturing and on the consumer end. Government should set more goals and standards to get to renewable resources. Europe is doing that with some good results, but it is going to take public, private and individual efforts to get to where we need to be. All around the world, forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. How can we save them? These are complicated issues, but they’re largely connected to economic problems. If an individual can make more money in a poor part of the world by cutting down forests and putting cattle on the landscape, what are they going to do? We need to change the economics such that it is more profitable to grow trees than to cut them. Ecotourism can help, and better markets for forest products can help. We have to have a reason to grow trees. Wood is the greenest of all building products, and we use trees to make paper and pulp products. Wood is an organic, renewable resource, so we can use them for energy. We need to manage forests sustainably, but if we don’t have a market for using that wood then you won’t have the forests. What changes do you hope to see over the next 30 years to ensure a sustainable future for the trees? There are so many issues… We’ve lost hundreds of thousands of jobs that are forest-related. We need to offer incentives to companies to stay here in the US. If we do that and at the same time make sure we’re managing sustainably, we’ll have good reason to keep our forests. Another thing that folks don’t think much about is what I call the “Invisible Forest Health Crisis,” or the loss of forests and other natural lands to development. We lose 6,000 acres a DAY in our country! We have 310 million people in the U.S. now, and will have 400 million by 2040. However you look at it, that’s a tremendous amount of pressure on this planet. If we’re going to continue to experience this growth, we HAVE to find better ways to deal with it– better ways to keep our natural lands natural, and our forests as forests.

This Month’s Hottest Shows BY SACHA DZUBA MAY 3 THROUGH MAY 12 - 500 SONGS FOR KIDS Smith’s Olde Bar Now in its sixth straight year, 500 Songs for Kids is hosted yearly at Smith’s Olde Bar, drawing over 500 musicians to perform the top 500 songs as chosen by Rolling Stone Magazine. Over the course of 10 days, the event schedules hundreds of artists, known and unknown. However, the concert event isn’t about the musicians or the songs themselves, but rather the very worthy causes that are being supported. The Songs for Kids Foundation assists children’s hospitals and special needs children’s organizations. The eclectic set list includes songs such as “White Wedding”, “Wanted Dead or Alive”, “Personal Jesus”, “Single Ladies” and “Born This Way”, to name but a few. It’s a worthy cause and any night is a great night for music. You never know who you might see; as the event has had appearances by many notable music performers over the years. Come out anytime for a diverse mixture of hits, do it for the kids. MAY 6 - THE MUSICAL BOX - RE-CREATION OF “THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY” Variety Playhouse The Musical Box are a Genesis cover band, hailing from Canada. They perform the only officially licensed re-creation of Genesis’ album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Lamb was a concept album created during their Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel era. Who are Genesis, or Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins? To you, I say, ever heard of “I Can’t Dance”, “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” ? You must be living in the land of confusion. This is a theatrical night of an entire classic album and show that is faithfully and meticulously recreated. With
only six dates in the US, this is a very special night of music and showmanship will be unforgettable. MAY 11 - STEEL PANTHER The Tabernacle Steel Panther is glam rock/metal at its finest and funniest. Coming out of LA and composed of ex-members of LA Guns, Fight, and other veteran metal bands; the parodic and ironic nature of the music they create is sure to make any fan of 80’s metal, rock-out laughing. Crass, sophomoric, and decidedly un-pc, Steel Panther easily evokes the sounds of hair metal bands gone by. You’re sure to hear them mocking the sounds Bon Jovi, Extreme, Van Halen, and Poison, to name but a few. Punctuated by zebra spandex and wigs, these guys also happen to be ripping musicians. Check out some of the brilliant and hilarious guitar solos by Satchel, their lead guitarist. Metal horns and tongue set firmly in-cheek are required. MAY 12 - MASTODON AND OPETH The Masquerade Mastodon is Atlanta’s own local metal heroes. They’ve redefined the genre with their epic musicianship, sludge meets technical proficiency. Inspired by the Melvins, Neurosis, and Thin Lizzy; they are known for their intricate instrumental passages, vocal harmonies, and distortion heavy, sludgy grooves. Their latest album, The Hunter, is perhaps less prog, but certainly no less dynamic that what any fan has come to expect. The Swedish Opeth embrace their diverse influ-
ences as musicians to create epic and dynamic songs. Incorporating elements from blues, progressive, folk and classical music into Scandinavian death metal may not be something that someone would consciously choose to fuse together; yet this is what makes Opeth such a compelling band to listen to. This particular show will see Mastodon closing out a ear-blistering evening of metal mayhem. Metal horns required! MAY 18 - UNKNOWN HINSON The Earl Break out your bushy side-burns and bring along your plastic vampire fangs, Unknown Hinson is comin’ to town. The hard drinkin’, hell raisin’ rockabilly vampire is the self-proclaimed “king of country western-troubadours”. Also known as the voice of Early Cuyler in the Squidbillies (on Adult Swim) he’s a great crooner and a smokin’ guitar player with a preference for “party liquor, sexy womerns, and fine guitars”. His famous fans include Matt Groening and Billy Bob Thornton, heck Hank Williams III has a tattoo of him on his arm! He’s got lyrics and a style that’s darkly satirical, with his tongue set firmly in his fanged cheek and music that’s country-western, rockabilly, blues, and rock influenced. Wax your pompadour back and bring your own jar ‘o’ ‘shine to party with the original rockabilly Dracula, Unknown Hinson MAY 19 - THE FLAMING LIPS “PARTY IN THE PARK” Centennial Olympic Park The Flaming Lips are a musical cross between Willy Wonka and a psychedelic Cat in the Hat. Their live shows feature melodic multi-layered psych-rock music, with space rock style lyrics; along with balloons, smoke, confetti, bear suits, and a giant plastic hamster-ball. Charismatic frontman Wayne Coyne leads the chaos with true enthusiasm, always earnest, emotional, and speaking from the heart. The Lips enjoy an almost cult-like following and continue to create wacky releases to accompany their eclectic spacious music. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends is their current release, but a

MAY 19 - ST. VINCENT Variety Playhouse Annie Clark, otherwise known as St. Vincent, is no stranger to the stage, having been a member of the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens’ touring band. She even had a song she and Bon Iver recorded, featured on the Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack. Her music and style is a beautiful Frankenstein’s monster of Goldfrapp, David Bowie, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, and Feist. St. Vincent’s latest offering, Strange Mercy, strips back some of the layered arrangements of her previous album and amps up some seriously outrageous guitar playing. Discover catharsis in the sublime through the music of St. Vincent. MAY 24 - YANN TIERSEN Variety Playhouse Yann Tiersen is known on this side of the Atlantic chiefly through his beautiful score for the film Amelie, which are mostly tracks taken from his first album. Tiersen has a whimsical and sometimes melancholy sound which borrows from chanson, musette waltz, street music, French folk music, minimalist, classical, avantgarde, and rock. Oftentimes deceptively simple, you can hear the influences of composers Erik Satie, Chopin, and Philip Glass in his music. Find a copy of his album, Rue des Cascades and listen to the title track. Often mistaken for a composer, since his music has an incredible filmic quality, Tiersen’s music will haunt you with beautific European charm. His music and melodies foster images of love, narrow cobblestone streets, and child-like discoveries.

vinyl ONLY release in honor of Record Store Day. There should be another album released later this year. This particular show isn’t JUST The Flaming Lips however, this is a great concert day and the first concert event in a decade to be hosted at Centennial Olympic Park. The other great bands featured are Young the Giant, AWOL Nation, and Dawes. One fantastic day of music with lots of great bands set in the beautiful Centennial Olympic Park, a perfect summer day.
ANDING SOMEWHERE ON the musical spectrum between The Shins and The Flaming Lips, Philly’s Cheers Elephant have been quietly churning out impossible to resist psychedelic pop-rock, crammed with beautiful three-part harmonies and unforgettable choruses that stick with you for hours. The song “Falling Out”, off of their latest (Like Wind Blows Fire), has been with me for days now. Three-fourths of the band have know each other since they were sleeping with nightlights, so there is definitely a bond that comes across as remarkably tight in their sound. Seriously, The Rolling Stones could learn a thing or two from these guys. With the band fresh off one of their
psychedelic pop sound on their incredibly addictive third album.
biggest tours – a trip that included several well-attended shows at SXSW – and about to turn in their third release, front man Derek Krzywicki was kind enough to answer some questions recently about the band’s founding, their influences and how they happened to find themselves sharing a stage with Chubby Checker. Enjoy! How did the band first get together? King (Robert Kingsly, drums), Matt (Travelin’ Mat, bass and vocals), and I have known each other since kindergarten. We started our first band together in 7th grade. Many years later, the summer after my freshmen year of college, I came back to form Cheers Elephant with King and Matt. We wrote and recorded an EP which sat on ice until I transferred back to the east coast after sophomore year. It
was around that time when Jordan (del Rosario, lead guitar and vocals), Matt’s cousin, joined the group. Since then we’ve been working harder and harder to make this our careers. Does anyone in the band have musical influences that surprise anyone? Well, we all jive on the same sort of stuff, which is nearly anything. Good music is good music, no matter what you wrap it in. You guys just finished a pretty big tour - where did you go? Any good road stories? The tour was a blast. We are officially addicted to the lifestyle and can’t wait to go out again. We went south through D.C., Asheville, Atlanta, New Orleans, Texas, Colorado, and Chicago just to name a few. We filmed a handful of tour dairies for YouTube if you wanted to get a good idea of what we were like. We made some cooking shows while camping and ate very well for a poor band. We did lots of free things like Brewery Tours and Disc Golfing at parks. How was SXSW? Were you able to check out any other bands? Amazing! We had a blast and had a killer reception. We were lucky to go to an RSVP Only performance of The
Shins which was fantastic. Also got to see Jimmy Cliff, Of Montreal, Built to Spill, Delta Spirit and so much more.... and all for free! Like Wind Blows Fire is your third release. Are you starting to feel more comfortable in the studio? Absolutely. It also helped that we worked with two producers - Justin Chapman and Lenny Skolnik - that we instantly befriended. We found ourselves laughing and having a good time in the studio more times than not, and all while keeping a good work ethic. How much time did you have to record for this one? We started recording with Justin Chapman and Lenny Skolnik almost immediately after we released Man Is Nature last year. So, we started recording around March of 2011. However, we got the bulk of our work done in the month of July and August of 2011.Then I’d say we had the finished product by November. I’ve gotta ask; How did you find yourself opening for Chubby Checker? It was a friend of a friend kind of thing. It was filmed for a pilot show which was produced by Drexel Film majors. They knew us, they knew Chubby, and bam! They got a show.

Album Reviews Reviews by B. Love, John Moore & Lee Valentine Smith
The Dean’s List LITTLE RICHARD – Here’s Little Richard (Specialty/Concord) Shine on, you crazy diamond LVS: With the opening pronouncement of “a-wop-bopa-loo-bop…” on his signature tune “Tutti Fruity,” Macon-born Little Richard almost singlehandedly invented the archetypical rock and roll record in 1955. If that had been his only hit, the self-proclaimed “architect of rock and roll” would have easily secured a place in any hall of fame. But for a brief period in the late ‘50s, the flamboyant Mr. Penniman’s output was legendary -- and his ground-breaking influences and recordings will forever shape rock, soul and r&b music and inspired many of the biggest stars of any generation. Over the years, numerous reissues of his work have surfaced but the excellent Here’s Little Richard is his first full-length disc. Including a number of his early hit singles, it was the first collection of what would eventually comprise many of his greatest hits. “Slippin’ And Slidin’,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Rip It Up” and “Jenny Jenny” all made their album debut on the original LP. Released in 1957 and recently reissued by Concord Records, the new, deluxe edition stands as the perfect package of the overall best recording from his gloriously erratic career. Of special interest to collectors is the inclusion of two original demo recordings, produced in his hometown at WMBL-AM. Tame in comparison to the wildly emotive recordings that would soon follow, the two tunes, “Baby” and “All Night Long,” show the raw origins of the young performer’s style -- and his polite opening introduction of “Little Richard and the Upsetters” is priceless. A bonus cut features an edited interview with Specialty’s Art Rupe, speaking about his oftenfrustrating dealings with Richard, an artist who insisted on doing things his own way, including turning his back on secular music, shortly after Here‘s Little Richard was originally released. “He’s unpredictable,” Rupe says. “He’s like an unfinished diamond.” VARIOUS ARTISTS – I Have My Liberty! Gospel Sounds From Accra, Ghana (Dust-to-Digital) Captured and enraptured by the Spirit BL: I’m not what you’d call a religious person, but some of my most vivid memories of growing up in Georgia involve churches (and not the staid ritualism of the Episcopal Church in which I was raised). There was a Holy Rollers church tucked away in the strip mall next to the Food Lion where we did our grocery shopping, and I remember seeing them open the doors to let those who’d been overcome by the Spirit catch their breath, with raucous gospel music spilling out onto the sidewalk as worshippers clapped their hands, shook their tambourines and sang to the heavens. And then there was the time my aunt took me to a Southern Pentecostal church, in which speaking in tongues was not uncommon. Both experiences seemed surreal– larger than life– and I was enthralled by that sacred connection to a higher power. I Have My Liberty is all about capturing PG 20 • May 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
those rapturous moments of divine spiritual connection. Recorded by producer Calpin Hoffman-Williamson in various churches around Ghana’s capital city of Accra, the album offers an immersive experience in homegrown musical expression, as flawed and un-selfconscious as those memorable moments from my childhood. The PA systems are distorted, the rhythms are not always perfectly syncopated, and not every voice always finds its note. And yet, as the singers build in call-and-response, tambourines shake, hands clap and rise towards the heavens, and ramshackle instruments drive the faithful forward towards salvation, the imperfection proves utterly perfect. From slow worshipful dirges to wild praise songs, these tunes incorporate a broad variety of influences (ranging from traditional drumming and highlife to reggae and American gospel), resulting in a messy musical melting pot. This is the sound of Africa. EL CAMINOS – Get To The Top (Uncle Punk) The record the New York Dolls should’ve made LVS: For the sixth official release from these streetwise Atlanta stalwarts, the venerable rockers have crafted what is, without any doubt, their best effort yet. Sure, it took five previous releases and 17 years, but the Caminos have finally created a near-perfect record for their genre. In the wake of their former benchmark, the snarling Raised By Wolves, the quintet has raised the bar on scruffy ‘70s style punk-injected rock to offer, in an economical half-hour, an ebullient timeline of their almost encyclopedic knowledge and influences. With standout cuts like the catchy yet poignant “Hospital Bed,” the raucous title track and the instantly-likable “Picture,” singer JJ Camino’s lyrics, coupled with the input of new recruit Lars Camino, propel the 10-song disc to a frenzied punk-rock nirvana only hinted at in previous releases. From the opening track “Picture,” the band, which also features CC, Paul and Dave, all infamously known by their Ramone-inspired surnames, have taken the best of the CBGB’s combo of rock, glam, country and punk and crafted a record that the New York Dolls should have made as the follow-up to their own debut. With the capable aid of co-producer Jeff Bakos (Rancid, GG Allin) the band issue a defiant dare to the success they’ve already achieved.
Rest of the Class
THE PROJECTION – While You Were Out (Paramount Drive) Cookie-cutter pop-punks come off half-baked JM: Missing the mid- to late‘90s? So are The Projection. If their latest album is any indication, music stopped mattering for this Illinois trio sometime after Sum 41 and Blink 182 stopped being played over the radio ‘round the clock. Their latest album is 10 tracks of sugary pop-punk (albeit punk in name only) that’s about as threatening as the clerk with freckles, braces and temporarily dyed hair at
your local Hot Topic. The guys are not bad musicians, just utterly predictable. It’s as if they were following a template they picked up at a booth on the Warped Tour about 10 years ago: bouncy songs about being dumped (“Trying to Forget You”), the standard we’ll-always-have-that-summer ballad (“Always Remember”) and an ironic cover (Buddy Holly’s “Oh Boy”). While You Were Out is just a few lyrics away from being a tribute album to every suburban kid’s favorite band circa 1999. Can’t wait ‘til they discover emo… GRADE: CTHE SEXUAL SIDE EFFECTS – High Maintenance (Effective Entertainment) Nothing’s shocking BL: There are three facts likely to color your preconceived notions of the Sexual Side Effects: Singer/multiinstrumentalist Amber Taylor is the transgendered scenester best known for the glam/punk event Glitterdome; the band’s name is decidedly tongue-in-cheek; and their debut EP’s cover features a dolled-up Taylor in a bridal veil, with a red ball gag in her mouth. These three facts might lead you to expect overthe-top outrageousness cut from the Impotent Sea Snakes’ cloth. But High Maintenance is, in fact, relatively tame, featuring straightforward alt-rock informed by ‘70s glam and ‘80s postpunk influences. Even the rocking “I’m In Love With A Girl (But She Used To Be A Man)” is about as risqué as Katy Perry. If you strip away the suggestive shenanigans, the John Briglevichproduced High Maintenance is actually a promising debut, but it’d be nice to see Taylor and company challenge their songwriting skills a bit more moving forward. GRADE: B FIREHOSE– LOWFLOWS: The Columbia Anthology ’91–‘93 (Columbia/Legacy) Early 90’s college-rockers return… sort of JM: The fact that fIREHOSE was even a band, let alone one with a strong enough catalog to justify a two-disc special re-release treatment, is surprising. When D. Boon accidentally died in the mid-80’s abruptly ending punk heroes The Minutemen, the last thing bassist Mike Watt wanted to do was start another band, still morning his band mate and one of his closest friends. As fIREHOSE legend has it, Ed Crawford (a 21-year old Ohio college student at the time) was partying with the band Camper Van Beethoven, who told him, jokingly, that Watt was auditioning guitar players for a new band. He looked up Watt and somehow managed to convince him to listen to him play. Not long after, the recently retired Watt was in a new band. Though they were around for eight years, they were always unfairly being compared to Watt and Hurley’s former group. The comparisons were ridiculous (but expected) as fIREHOSE was more CCR and Dylan influenced then the harder, rawer Minutemen sound. As lowFLOWS shows, the band was not afraid of melody, but don’t confuse that with selling out. fIREHOSE still exercised brilliant musicianship and plenty of lyrical righteous indignation. Funny and provocative as ever, Watt and the boys skirted through the 90’s as one of college rock’s best kept secrets. The songs still sound just as strong as they did in the early ‘90s, especially tracks like “Down With the Boss” and “Toolin’.” Though their early SST records didn’t make the cut, this collection includes remastered versions of 1991’s Flyin’ The Flannel and 1994’s Mr. Machinery Operator, the hard-to-find live EP Live Totem Pole and a slew
of other rare and out-of-print singles. Its little coincidence that lowFLOW is coming out just as the band is reuniting for a series of shows this spring and summer, including Coachella. Fly the flannel high this summer. GRADE: ATRUCKSTOP HONEYMOON – Steamboat in a Cornfield (Squirrel) Bluegrass wrapped in punk-rock ethos JM: One is a fluke, two is an anomaly, but three is clearly a trend. “Bluegrass punk” may finally be getting its due thanks to bands like Larry & His Flask, Old Man Markley and Truckstop Honeymoon, all of which combine banjo with standup bass, irreverent lyrics and a DIY punkrock attitude. Steamboat in a Cornfield is the seventh record from the husband and wife team of Katie Euliss and Mike West. The 16-track record calls to mind everyone from the two aforementioned groups to Squirrel Nut Zippers and Louis Armstrong. The Dixieland jazz sound comes naturally to the duo, which called New Orleans home before Hurricane Katrina pushed them on the road (the band eventually landed in Kansas, which I can only assume is the meaning behind the record’s title). The duo takes turns at the mic, and their music is at its best when they’re delivering quirky songs like “She Wants to Be French” or the “Grateful Dead Show,” which is hands down the best song ever written about a Deadhead trying to woo an underage girl. Bluegrass has long been maligned thanks to its embrace by pretentious pricks and jam band fans, but the snickers and eye rolls may finally come to an end now that the genre’s been infected by fans of Social Distortion and The Clash. GRADE: B AMY RAY – Lung of Love (Daemon) Still strong, even when flying solo BL: I’ve always admired Amy Ray as much for the work she did off stage as for her intensely personal music. Her Daemon Records label has been vital to Georgia’s indie music scene. Politically, she’s put the weight of her fame behind a host of excellent causes ranging from LGBT and women’s rights to environmental protection and the struggles of indigenous people around the world. Now, less than a year after the Indigo Girls released Beauty Queen Sister, Ray has returned with her fourth solo LP (her first since 2008). On the opening “When You’re Gone, You’re Gone,” she’s still mooning over a lost love like she did on “Blood & Fire,” but the lonesome lap steel guitar symbolizes resigned acceptance rather than heartbroken desperation. “Glow” is among her most rocking tracks in years– one minute and 56 seconds of power-pop perfection. “From Haiti” proves she still has an eye on the world’s sociopolitical problems, and on the unabashedly lovesick “Little Revolution,” she proves she’s not averse to a little McCartney-esque silly love song. The result is as fun (and flyweight) as anything she’s recorded. But for those seeking classic Amy Ray songwriting prowess, check the bluegrass-influenced gospel of “The Rock Is My Foundation,” which, like many of Lung of Love’s best songs, features impeccable backing vocals from Brandi Carlisle. Touching on familiar topics– sin, salvation, religion, etc.– the song sounds like a long-lost cut from O Brother, Where Art Thou, and it’s my favorite thing Ray’s written in years. While the edge of her songwriting may not be quite as jagged and piercing at the age of 48 as it was at 23, maturity has brought with it a more expansive artistic palette, and a deeper shade of soul. BUCK PRIVATES: COLLECTOR’S SERIES With The Three Stooges raking it in at the box office, it seems like the perfect time to rediscover another great comedy act of the early 20th century. Former vaudeville stars Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were among the most successful big screen teams of the 1940s-1950s, and Buck Privates marked their debut as stars after a supporting turn in One Night In The Tropics. The story finds the pair accidentally enlisted in the military while trying to avoid a cop (who, naturally, winds up being their drill sergeant). The snappy repartee and physical comedy is top-notch, and made the boys HUGE Hollywood stars. The bevy of extras includes the theatrical special, a TV special with Jerry Seinfeld, and various Universal Studios 100th Anniversary features. DARK SHADOWS: FAN FAVORITES & BEST OF BARNABAS The late-‘60s vampire soap Dark Shadows has maintained a loyal cult following for nearly five decades. Even if you aren’t yet a fan, between the hysterical low budget effects, flimsy scenery, and goofy (but addictive) storylines about every supernatural creature imaginable, you can’t help but root for the little show that could. MPI is releasing a massive 131-DVD box set but, for those short on cash, the Fan Favorites and Best of Barnabus collections should do just fine.

LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: SEASON FIVE Long before Two Broke Girls, there was Laverne & Shirley, the classic Happy Days spinoff about two young brewery employees and the greasers (a.k.a. Lenny and Squiggy) who loved them. It’s hard to imagine in today’s information overloaded world what it was like when there were only 3 TV channels to choose from, but certain elements of this show (“Hello, Laverne!”) remain embedded in my mind nearly 40 years later. The fifth season was arguably among the show’s best, with Happy Days crossover episodes and great guest stars (including Ted Danson and Vicki Lawrence). Nice to finally see it on DVD, four years after the release of Season 4. TREME: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON Proving last season wasn’t just a fluke; the post-Katrina set New Orleans drama about cleaning up lives and homes after the hurricane continues to rely on fantastic writing and compelling characters. Season two focuses many of the plot lines around the increase in violent crime and corruption with the government clean up contracts. And if you though the killing of John Goodman’s character was sad, what until you see who gets offed this time around.

MOVIES FROM PAGE 15 quits? If you’re Sony, you reboot. Garfield was chosen over hundreds of other actors to replace Maguire. Mark Webb, whose previous film, (500) Days of Summer, was not exactly a comic book movie, was tapped to direct. Big names like Sheen and Field (as uncle and aunt of Spider-Man’s alter ego, Peter Parker) and Stone (as love interest Gwen Stacy) were brought in as well. Will all this work? A global simulcast that showed rough cuts of some scenes in February got rave reviews. If nothing else, it’s bound to be better than the Broadway musical.
JULY 6 SAVAGES
The Stars: Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, Salma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro, John Travolta, Uma Thurman The Shill: Chon (Kitsch) and Ben (Johnson) are best friends and marijuana growers who share a girlfriend, Ophelia (Lively). When a Mexican cartel leader (Hayek) and her henchman (Del Toro) kidnap Ophelia, the boys are ready to fight back. The Skinny: Such an intense story is typical from director Oliver Stone. He probably had a lot of fun shooting this. For Kitsch, this movie is about as far away as he can get from his March release, John Carter. Good thing, since Carter was an epic flop.
JULY 13 ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT
The Stars: Voices of Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Jennifer Lopez, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Peter Dinklage The Shill: After their continent is set adrift, Manny (Romano), Diego (Leary) and Sid (Leguizamo) use an iceberg as a ship and explore a new world. The Skinny: A fourth Ice Age movie in 10 years? This franchise shows no signs of slowing down. However, it might be wise to end on a high note, which this undoubtedly will be.
TED
The Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane The Shill: A teddy bear that came to life as the result of a childhood wish continues to cause trouble for John (Wahlberg) well into his adulthood. The Skinny: This is the first movie fromFamily Guy creator MacFarlane. It will no doubt deliver exactly what his fans expect.
JULY 20 THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
The Stars: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Joseph GordonLevitt, Michael Caine The Shill: Eight years after the events in The Dark Knight, Batman (Bale) is despised and in exile. Two new criminals bring him out of seclusion: Catwoman (Hathaway) and terrorist Bane (Hardy). The Skinny: The Dark Knight grossed $1 billion worldwide and earned the late Heath Ledger an Oscar. That sets some pretty high expectations – expectations this movie should have no problem meeting. PG 22 • May 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
JULY 25 RUBY SPARKS
The Stars: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Steve Coogan, Elliott Gould The Shill: A novelist unlucky in love and stricken with writer’s block (Dano) begins writing about a makebelieve girl he sees in his dreams, then finds that very woman living inside his house. The Skinny: This is the first movie from directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris since their 2006 triumph Little Miss Sunshine. Can they pull off another sleeper smash? Having Sunshinealum Dano as the lead and supported by Bening and Banderas can only help.
JULY 27 NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
The Stars: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade The Shill: Members of a neighborhood watch (did the title give it away?) must fight an alien invasion. The Skinny: Having Stiller, Vaughn and Hill star in a comedy co-written by Seth Rogen almost guarantees a hit. The only question is whether the Trayvon Martin tragedy will spark a backlash against the neighborhood watch plot.
AUGUST 3 THE BOURNE LEGACY
The Stars: Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn, David Strathairn The Shill: Despite the title, Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne is nowhere to be found here. Instead, the movie focuses on another covert governmenttrained assassin, Aaron Cross (Renner). The Skinny: Trying to sell the Bourne franchise without Bourne could be tricky. If Renner can pull it off this movie should make him a star.
DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS The Stars: Zachary Gordon, Devon
Bostick, Peyton List, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris The Shill: Seventh-grader Greg (Gordon) – the “wimpy kid” of the title – works a summer job at a fancy country club. The Skinny: Fans of the Wimpy Kid books showed up faithfully for the first two movie adaptations. Expect them to do the same this time.
TOTAL RECALL
The Stars: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, Ethan Hawke, John Cho, Bokeem Woodbine The Shill: Factory worker Douglas Quaid (Farrell) discovers that his memories are false and in reality he is a freedom fighter against a totalitarian regime. The Skinny: Why did they need to remake the 1990 Schwarzenegger classic? Short answer: They didn’t. But if this works, it could put Farrell back on Hollywood’s A-list.
AUGUST 10 THE CAMPAIGN
The Stars: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Sarah Baker, Dylan McDermott The Shill: Four-term North Carolina Congressman Cam Brady (Ferrell) faces scandal when a racy voicemail is made public. Republican Marty Higgins (Galifianakis) steps forward to challenge him, launching a raucous election battle. The Skinny: Ferrell, Galifianakisand director Jay Roach (Austin Powers,Meet the Parents) coming together to spoof the absurdities of politics? Sounds like a winning ballot.
HOPE SPRINGS
The Stars: Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Elisabeth Shue The Shill: A Midwestern couple (Streep and Jones) travel to a Maine coastal town for a weekend of therapy in an attempt to save their marriage. The Skinny: Oscar winners Streep and Jones playing a married couple is reason enough to see this movie.
AUGUST 17 THE EXPENDABLES 2
The Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Liam Hemsworth, Jason Statham, Jet Li, JeanClaude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger The Shill: The group of mercenaries known as the “Expendables,” led by Barney Ross (Stallone), is back. Their mission this time: avenging the death of a colleague. The Skinny: The original Expendables proved Stallone could still be an action hero in his 60s, so it makes sense that Willis and Schwarzeneggerwould have bigger roles this time around. Fans of ‘80s action movies must feel like they’ve found nirvana.
PARANORMAN
The Stars: Voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann, John Goodman, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse The Shill: Lonely preteen Norman (SmitMcPhee) can talk to ghosts. His skill proves to be helpful when zombies attack his Massachusetts town. The Skinny: This seems a bit darker than the traditional animated movie, but don’t be surprised if it develops a cult following.
SPARKLE
The Stars: Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Cee Lo The Shill: This remake of the 1976 musical drama of the same name tells the story of Sparkle (Sparks), a singer in a vocal group who becomes a star. The Skinny: Houston, who served as executive producer as well as co-star, spent more than 10 years trying to get the film made. She died only 3 months after production finished. Her many fans may be interested in seeing this movie as a way to pay their final respects.
AUGUST 24 PREMIUM RUSH
The Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Jamie Chung, Dania Ramirez The Shill: A New York City bike messenger (Gordon-Levitt) is hunted by a corrupt cop (Shannon). The Skinny: You could say this production was troubled. It filmed during New York’s hottest summer on record, and Gordon-Levitt required 32 stitches in his right arm after colliding with a cab. Still, the track record of writer-director David Koepp, who has penned such movies as Mission: Impossible, SpiderMan and War of the Worlds, suggests this could be a late summer hit.
AUGUST 31 LAWLESS
The Stars: Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain The Shill: Prohibition-era siblings (Hardy, LaBeouf, Clarke) smuggle moonshine in mason jars and must contend with a FBI agent (Perace) from Chicago. The Skinny: The Western is a more or less outdated movie genre. It seems unlikely that even the guy from Transformers could make it relevant again.
FILM
OUT OF THE SHADOWS
Once A Hollywood Outsider, Johnny Depp Has Become One Of Its Most Bankable Stars BY BRET LOVE
I
T’S BECOME A CLICHÉ TO suggest that Hollywood lacks originality. But in an economy where innovation is less important than the bottom line, creativity has become something of a liability. So it’s increasingly rare to find actors and filmmakers who achieve commercial success on their own terms. But Johnny Depp (along with his cinematic soulmate, director Tim Burton) has managed to do just that: His last five live-action films have made more than $1 billion at the US box office and, with his role as gothic vampire Barnabas Collins in this month’s eagerly anticipated Dark Shadows, that hot streak doesn’t appear likely to end any time soon. But the unconventional actor has opted to take the road less traveled more often than not, riding a rebellious reputation and engendering an enigmatic image that has made his career arc both impossible to predict and fascinating to watch. We caught up with the 48-year-old star to discuss the ups and downs of his career, why he’s drawn to colorful characters, and working with Tim Burton for the eighth time on Dark Shadows. You’re known for playing these idiosyncratic characters. Would you ever be interested in playing a more conventional leading man role? It’s good fun playing characters like Captain Jack and Willy Wonka, who can do things I would never dream of doing. I feel like all these guys are straight characters. They may seem bizarre, but I think everybody’s nuts. The weirdest thing in the world to me is to see some guy who’s super-earnest. As far as doing that, there would have to be something underneath for me to make that work. Otherwise, there are a bunch of guys who do that kind of thing very well. I don’t think I could. I’ve got to have a bunch of different things going on, with lots of layers.
You and Tim Burton have had a fruitful creative partnership. What makes your connection so special? Tim was the guy who went out on a limb and took a chance on me back in 1990. I know over the years he’s had to butt heads with the studios quite a few times to allow me to be in his films, because I wasn’t particularly popular at the time. He’s fought long, hard battles to get me in and won, so there’s a bond of love and respect that will be there forever. But he also happens to be one of the most interesting filmmakers of all time in my opinion, so I feel really lucky to have been chosen by him. We have a similar outlook, similar sensibilities, and a similar sense of humor and of the absurd. Since the first second that we met all those years ago in that little coffee shop in Los Angeles, for me there was an instant connection on a lot of different levels, like this weird fascination with the absurdity of things that were perfectly acceptable in the 1970s, like macramé owls and fake fruit. Ever since then I have only wanted to give him what he wants.
What do you think makes him unique as a director? I just think he’s a genius, and that’s not a word that you can throw around very easily. I think Tim is so special and our working relationship is, as you can imagine, weird, because there is a sort of emotional shorthand there and some kind of connection that I don’t know how to explain. But most of the time, at least for me, all I’m trying to do is make him laugh. Even in the scene, you can have all these motivations and objectives as an actor but when when I get in the ring, it basically all goes out the window and I’m just trying to make Tim laugh. I just want to see in my peripheral vision his sort of hunched over giggle where he’s trying not to make noise. Did you ever get frustrated with Hollywood during that time when you weren’t popular?
THE ONLY PROBLEM I EVER HAD IN TERMS OF FRUSTRATION WITH HOLLYWOOD WAS THAT I DIDN’T THINK THEY UNDERSTOOD THE MOVIES THAT I DID AND DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO SELL THEM PROPERLY, BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO LABEL THEM.
For years, there were people saying, ‘You have to do this kind of movie because you’ve got to make money.’ I always felt like, hopefully the money will come at some point, but if it doesn’t, that’s all right. I’ve done the things I felt were right in terms of movies. The only problem I ever had in terms of frustration with Hollywood was that I didn’t think they understood the movies that I did and didn’t know how to sell them properly, because they didn’t know how to label them. I’m sure it would have made their job a whole lot easier had I done some of the things that were proposed to me over the years. But I got very lucky when I met my agent [Tracey Jacobs]. Some of the top brass at some of the agencies were pretty vocal about some of the choices I’d made, but Tracey supported me all the way down the road. Was there a specific turning point where you started feeling like less of an industry outsider? Well, knowing I was going to have a kid made it a lot easier for me to roll with the punches. That put a lot of things in perspective. For a number of years, I didn’t understand any of it, in terms of success or career. But when I found out Vanessa and I were going to have a baby, you find out what’s important like [snaps fingers] real quick. It was like finally understanding what it was all about for me, really. When I saw my daughter being born, it was the first really totally selfless moment I’d had. Has having kids changed the types of roles you look for? There are two ways I look at it. On the one hand, I DO select roles differently because I think I started making choices all those years ago with regard to what I might be able to leave for my kids when the day comes that I don’t breathe anymore. I started
making films that my kids would one day want to be proud of. But there’s not one particular area that I’m staying in, because I think it’s important for an actor to explore all kinds of areas. How do you feel about your turn of fortune in Hollywood? (Laughs) Somebody mentioned me being on some Forbes list and it just made me laugh. It doesn’t make any sense to me at all, but if that’s where they wanna put me this week, that’s great. It doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll be there next week. I figure if this is what the ride is for the moment, great. But it’ll always change. I’m still doing the things I’ve chosen to do for a good stretch of time now, and I’m happy for that small core group of people– I hate to and won’t use the word ‘fans’– who have stuck with me all these years, because now they don’t have to hang their heads in shame... At least not as much. Do you think success has changed you in any way? It hasn’t changed my work ethic or my approach to the work. I’ve been very lucky in my life that I have worn many hats, literally, and I’d love to show them all to you. I’ve done everything from selling ink pens over the telephone to screen printed T-shirts, worked construction, was a musician for a number of years and a busboy. I’ve done a lot of different things and I’ve had a great deal of luck in this business, so I’m somewhat together enough to know that if the ride is going smooth, fun and well and everything is peachy keen this week, then all that could evaporate next week and then I’m once again that weird guy that does art films, which is okay. So I’ve always said I’ve never had any allergy to the idea of commercial success. It was just how you got there that was important. insiteatlanta.com • May 2012 • PG 23

FASHION HAS GONE TO ELLE
Supermodel Macpherson shines as the host of NBC’s new Fashion Star series BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
S
UPERMODEL ELLE MACPHERSON is a star of fashion, business and now, reality television. A model since 1982, she’s spent the past three decades in a unique, hands-on role in charge of her own company and personally oversees her many corporate and charity endeavors. Known internationally as “The Body” for her extensive Sports Illustrated and Elle magazine appearances, the gorgeous personality has also added numerous television and film roles to her impressive portfolio. In 2010, she became host and executive producer of Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model, and she is currently an executive producer and the host of NBC-TV’s new series Fashion Star (airing on Tuesdays at 10 pm EST). She recently spoke with Insite about the new show featuring budding fashion designers, her business savvy and her own personal fashion style. Fashion Star is your second time out as an executive producer and host. Do you enjoy the production side of television? Yes, I really do. But I’ve always produced, even from the early days. I left my modeling agency in the ‘80s and started my own business, Elle Macpherson, Inc. I’ve produced my own calendars; I’ve produced the workout videos. In my lingerie business I’m creative director, which means I’m often producing photo shoots and the website material. You’re definitely known as a very “handson” personality. It’s simply because I love working in a team. And I love seeing projects all the way through. I like the beginning, middle, the end and the sell-through. For example, I was just in Cannes last week selling the show and we’ve sold it into 75 countries. And now here you are on American television with American designers. How did you get involved with this show? I was very interested in the concept because I had seen something a few years ago where I saw a fashion show streamed live from Japan. I noticed that you could move your mouse across the model and click onto the garments and buy them immediately. And I knew that this was revolutionary as far as fashion and shopping was concerned. And so when the format came up for Fashion Star it really felt right for me and right for where we are today as far as technology and shopping is concerned. Can you explain the concept a bit? Each week, the contestants will be given a themed assignment to make one look for the runway. They’ll be helped along by [mentors] Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos. Then, they’ll be judged by buyers from Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue. The buyers bid on the looks they like, and pass on the ones they don’t. The claimed clothes will become available in stores the day after the episode airs, so viewers can immediately bring them home. The stakes are very high because there’s immediate buys and sells from the buyers on the day. I love the fact with this show that there is a winner every week so it’s not like we’re all holding out for the one grand prize at the end. So each episode can stand alone as a single

I LOVE TO SEE PEOPLE EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH THEIR CLOTHES - WHATEVER THAT IS. ANYTHING WORN WITH CONFIDENCE WORKS BY ME. show, unlike a lot of reality shows. Right. It’s not like you have to follow the designers all the way through to get the thrill as an audience because there is buying and selling on stage every night. It’s equal parts business and style. Is there a fashion trend right now that kind of makes you cringe? Some new horrible wave that you wish would just disappear? I love to see people express themselves through their clothes - whatever that is. Anything worn with confidence works by me. It’s when people try to follow trends that don’t really work for them, that they don’t believe in or they don’t understand -- or they’re just doing it because it seems like the cool thing to do -- that’s when it doesn’t come off as well. Let’s talk about your personal style? As usual, you look amazing and remarkably like you did in the ‘80s. What is your secret? Oh, it’s the lighting (laughs). You know, I’m old school. It’s all about good hair and makeup and lighting. And great wardrobe. I had Alex White from W do my styling. For me it’s professional stuff more than anything else. Do you think your public image has evolved over the years? Well I have two styles; I have my work and working outfits, my wardrobes - it’s like my game face. Then I have my at home, running around, taking my kids on the school run type of thing. I do know that as I’ve matured and I’m more confident in who I am on the inside I worry less about how making mistakes on the outside. I think fashion is really interesting because we can really express ourselves through fashion.

TAKE OFF!
The Real McKenzies Leave The Great White North Behind For Life On The Road BY JOHN B. MOORE
I
T’S ALMOST SUMMER, SO THE Real McKenzies are leaving their native Canada to thaw out across the border once again. Though it’s been about four years since their last album of all new material, the band has nevertheless continued to run their van into the ground. With the release of Westwinds, their eighth album, the band has a slew of new songs to add to their popular Celtic punk rock, beer-fueled set. The new songs are a little more rock-focused than their last few records, but still unmistakably a Real McKenzies’ affair. Co-founder and guitarist Bone spoke recently about the record, their recent lineup changes and why he needs to check with his lawyer before opening up about life on the road. Let’s started off with the 4-year gap between albums (of original music). Did you just need a break? Well with all the touring we’ve been doing in the last four years I wouldn’t say we’ve had much of a break. We have had members live all over the world at any given time and since there is not one sole song writer, it’s hard - and expensive - to get everyone together to collaborate. Well, what can you tell me about Wes winds? The material is a bit of a departure from
MUSIC
our last albums. We were trying to get more of a rock record together and I think we did. We hope the material goes over well with the old fans as well as winning us some new ones and broadening our audience.
Any lineup changes since Off The Leash? Many. Little Joe has been replaced by Gwomper (from Avail) on bass duties. Sean Sellers has recently opted out for a gig back in his native land (the US) and is replaced by Jesse Pinner of DOA fame. Matt McNasty has been replaced by Gord Talyor who has been replaced by Aspy Luison who was temporarily replaced by Matt McNasty who was again replaced by Aspy Luison on bagpipes; Dave Gregg has also exited the band allowing room for Dirty Kurt Robertson to return. The saga still continues. Paul and myself are still here and committed and haven’t missed a show in 13 years.
it’s not always fun, but it is what I asked for. I’ve seen the planet numerous times and partied my ass off in places I’d never had gotten to if it wasn’t for this band. A lot of my friends who have “normal lives” say they envy me, that they are proud of what I’m doing. I just hope they feel that same way when I need to occupy their guest room for a few years. Are there any places you refuse to play based on past experiences? There are a few places I personally detest, but Im not going to say where. No, this band will play anywhere and everywhere.
Have you figured out yet what you are doing this summer? Yes we will be doing - surprise! - more extensive touring, starting April 27 in Toronto supporting the Reverend Horton Heat, then we will continue across Canada until May 18th when we start the American part of the tour along with Civet. Then a three week break and we’ll be back in Europe for the summer festivals. What else is next for the band? Wait until the dust settles from the summer tours and weigh out our options. At some point we need to fix our van.
You guys spend more time on the road than most of the folks I talk to. What are some of your better tour stories? There are so many road moments they all sort of blend together, and it’s hard to tell one without incriminating someone in some way. So you’re just going to have to wait for the book. I just need a lawyer first... Is it tough to have a normal life when you tour so much? I’m lucky enough to have gotten what I wanted out of life. It’s not always easy and
I’M LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE GOTTEN WHAT I WANTED OUT OF LIFE. IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY AND IT’S NOT ALWAYS FUN, BUT IT IS WHAT I ASKED FOR. I’VE SEEN THE PLANET NUMEROUS TIMES AND PARTIED MY ASS OFF IN PLACES I’D NEVER HAD GOTTEN TO IF IT WASN’T FOR THIS BAND.

Anoushka Shankar On Her Famous Father, Indian Music & Her Love of Flamenco BY BRET LOVE
A
S THE DAUGHTER OF INDIAN music legend Ravi Shankar, half-sister of jazz-pop icon Norah Jones and wife to respected film director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), Anoushka Shankar may not be the most famous person in her family. But she is arguably the most talented female sitar player in the world today, and she’s capably carrying on her father’s legacy of groundbreaking crosscultural collaborations. Born in 1981, Anoushka began studying with her dad at the age of nine, and by age 14 she was accompanying him at concerts all over the world. She signed her first record deal at the age of 16, and 2003 she became the youngest person and first female nominated for a World Music Grammy for her third-album, Live at Carnegie Hall. Like her father, who turned the classical music world on its ear long before teaching The Beatles’ George Harrison how to play sitar, Anoushka has collaborated with musicians from a broad variety of genres, including Jones, violinist Joshua Bell, Sting, Herbie Hancock and Thievery Corporation. But her latest album, Traveller, features her most extensive collaboration to date, exploring the similarities between Indian music and flamenco with Spanish artists such as Pepe Habichuela, Sandra Carrasco and Duquende. We recently spoke with Shankar about her famous father’s influence, her interest in fusing disparate musical styles, and what she learned about Spanish culture during her time recording the new album in Spain.
Your father is arguably the most influential musician in Indian music history. Was there
ever a question of whether or not you’d follow in his footsteps? Absolutely, the question was continually back and forth in my mind. It definitely felt like a very obvious option. After I graduated from high school, I made a decision not to go to college and start touring full-time. Even at that time, I thought maybe I’d do it for a year and see what happens. During that year, it became so clear to me that that was my life and who I was– a touring musician.
I’m a huge fan of your father’s revolutionary approach to fusing different musical traditions. Can you talk about his impact on world music, and how his work influenced you? He was the first person from the East to crossover, exposing the western world to the sounds of India. A decade before his association with George Harrison, he already had a strong career in the classical world. The funny thing is that if you talk to him, he’ll say it wasn’t fusion at all. What he did was work with other musicians and teach them how to play Indian music. I think timing was the key for what he did and continues to do, and the point was more about exposure to the eastern world. You started mixing Indian and Western musical styles on Rise. What do you think these traditions can learn from each other? I think the goal of musical dialogue is to open people’s minds, because they take in music in a way that they may not take in a news story. If people are exposed to new sounds, they end up gaining a respect for it that affects the whole cultural dialogue. In that sense, collaboration across cultures is extremely important. The other side is a much more personal one, where musicians like me are engaging
in various forms of music, making sense of ourselves and the world around us. We live in a multicultural world, and artists are going to reflect that. How much does your Carnegie Hall audience intersect with your Anoushka Shankar Project audience? It’s like a pie chart: There are people in separate circles, and then there is a section that crosses over. One of my favorite things is to see a bunch of hippies at a concert hall. On a tour like Traveler, where we’re playing music that’s difficult to categorize, the venue we’re playing in impacts the audience response. In a concert hall, the audience receives the music as something culturally important and ancient. Then you play the exact same music in a smaller venue, and it’s a bunch of kids reacting to the pulse and melodies with excitement, like “Wow, I can’t believe this is Indian music and Flamanco!” When did you first become intrigued by the flamenco sounds you explore on Traveler? I’ve been aware of it most of my life and progressively listened to more of it over the years. I did one collaboration with a flamenco musician on Rise, and that experience left me with a desire to do more. I found the combination really intriguing and challenging. We have to stretch ourselves, and I learned a lot from the process. Did you go to Spain to study? Yes. My producer had connections in Spain, so I traveled around working with lots of Spanish musicians. That was important for me, to soak in the atmosphere and the music. Tell me a little bit about your experience with
Spanish culture. I love the people, and I love the flamenco approach to music. It is completely soulful and absorbed, with the goal being to get themselves lost in it. Like Indian musicians, they are deeply into their own style and don’t listen to anything else, so they knew very little about the tradition of my instrument. There was a lot of me showing people what I do, and often they would say, “Where did she learn to play flamenco so well?” I would say, “I’m not playing flamenco, I’m playing Indian classical music!” Those commonalities were things I had to show people while making this record. Your father’s in his 90s and still performing. Any plans to work together soon? I hope so! We just did a show together in Bangalore. He’s doing a few shows in the U.S. now, but it’s when I’m touring separately. But I do hope we get more opportunities to play together. Your father has left an indelible imprint on music. What do you hope your musical legacy will be? I don’t believe one can think about things like legacies and the future and still be enough in the moment to make good art. The art one creates has to be very much in the present and about one’s selfexpression. If that reaches people and has a lasting impact, that’s something to be very proud of.

DIRTY DEEDS
Cheap Girls Pairs With Against Me’s Tom Gabel On New Album BY JOHN B. MOORE
I
T SEEMS SOMETIMES THOSE DRUNKEN bar conversations can actually lead to something good. Thanks to a booze-soaked night of drinking between Cheap Girls frontman Ian Graham and Against Me!’s Tom Gabel, while both were out on tour, Gabel confessed his desire to produce a band and Graham gladly volunteered his own. Problem was, the bassist didn’t remember the conversation until he got a confirmation the next day via text from Gabel. The end result, almost a year later, is Giant Orange, which is by far the band’s most consistently solid album in an already impressive, if brief, career. Recorded in a proper studio (a first for the Lansing, MI-based band) and with a proper producer (yet another first for Cheap Girls), Giant Orange finds a band comfortable with their songwriting and sound, a mix of strong melodies backed by classic punk rock that brings to mind everyone from Dillinger Four to the aforementioned Against Me! Along with Ian, the trio is comprised of his bother, drummer Ben, and longtime friend guitarist Adam Aymor. Ian spoke recently about the album, working with Gabel and being added to the roster of Rise Records. Tell me a little bit about how you got Tom involved in this record. I know you toured with Against Me! a little bit. We did that tour with them back in January (2011) and I think we were at a bar and he was talking about how he wanted to produce a record. We were talking in the bar towards the end of the tour and we weren’t sure where we were going to record or when we were going to get around to recording it and we had a lot of drinks. I remember it got a little blurry and the next day it slipped my mind and then he texted me “Were you serious about me producing the record?” I said
“Oh yeah, absolutely.” I had completely forgotten that it had come up. It was just a cool change. We didn’t know what exactly to do different with the next record. We’ve always written the same way – one song at a time and it adds and adds and adds. We were all feeling pretty good about it, but when it came down to where we were going to record it, we wanted something different. How did Ben and Adam react when you told them that you had asked Tom to produce it? We were in a hotel and had they day off, so when they came back into the room I said “I don’t think you guys are going to be mad, but...” We’re all pretty easy going and I think everyone was just excited about something fresh. It was nothing we had really planned on so it was exciting. This was really the first time you guys had used an outside producer wasn’t it? Yeah, it was also our first time ever using a recording studio. What did you guys do before? Well, we had somebody record the other ones, but it was a friend and we did the first one in about four days in a cabin in Northern Michigan. We just brought all this gear up there and recorded for like 17 hours a day for four days. The second record, a friend of ours had a basement with high ceilings, so we went over there and did drums. We then went on tour for three weeks and came home and did guitar, bass and vocals and had to do it while dodging his landlord. So this was the first time where we had some time – we were there for like 18 days. Was that preferable? They each have their advantages. It was kind of like an extended version of the first record where you don’t
really loose that head space because you’re doing it continuously. It gets to the point where you don’t want to take a day off because you don’t want to lose momentum. The way we recorded it we were finally able to do it with more of a live element. This is the first one where we all stood in a room and added to it together. Was it odd at all to have someone else there making suggestions about the songs? No not at all. I think since we’re all pretty tight knit, because Ben and I are brothers and Adam and I have been roommates for years and years, you would think it would be. I don’t think there’s a lot of people that could have fit right in there as comfortably (as Tom), but it was like having a new buddy there. It was really welcomed and refreshing. I could see how it could be odd, but it wasn’t. It was really comfortable. Did you go into the studio with all the songs already created? We went in there with everything worked out, about 14 or 15 songs, and I went down to Florida and stayed with Tom and his family and demoed songs between tours and a couple weeks before we went down to record he came up to Lansing for five days or so and was in our practice space, so we got everything down
tight. There were a couple of things we adjusted when we recorded, but for the most part we went in there knowing these were the songs. I’d say about 95 % of it was worked out before we started recording. You mentioned that tour with Against Me! How did you guys first hook up with that band? Had they heard about you guys before or was it just through booking agents? Right after (Against Me!’s) White Crosses album they were coming through Lansing and they were touring with Silversun Pickups. They were doing a one-off show in Lansing and Tom has asked if we’d play. We didn’t really know them at all at that point; hadn’t even met them. We were all excited because we liked that record a lot. We met there and really had a good time and a couple months later we got an e-mail asking if we wanted to be a part of their tour. It worked out really well and was an exciting time because we really liked that record. What’s next for you guys? I’m sure we’ll go on another tour and go back to Europe. There’s no specific plans, but then again we all kind of know what’s going to happen. We know how to stay busy at this point.
JEALOUS GUY
Blair Shehan (a.k.a. The Jealous Sound) Returns To Rock After a 9-Year Absence BY JOHN B. MOORE
I
T CAN BE A BIT DAUNTING following up your debut album, especially if the first one topped many critics’ year-end best-of lists. So it’s not unusual for bands to take a little time off between albums. But the 9-year gap between The Jealous Sound’s debut and their latest effort makes A Gentle Reminder like the Chinese Democracy of the indie rock world (though this record actually proves worth the wait). During that hiatus, singer/guitarist Blair Shehan spent a lot of time just trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, which at one point almost included law school. The years of introspection eventually brought him back to music in 2008 with a high-profile gig opening for the reunited Sunny Day Real Estate. After coming off that tour, The Jealous Sound was able to get back to work finally putting together their next record. Needing a bassist, they were even able to get Sunny Day/Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel to help them out in the studio. It took nearly a decade, but the band finally has
a proper follow up to their critically-lauded debut. Shehan spoke with us recently about the hiatus, what brought them back together and getting a Foo Fighter to help them out in the studio.
So did you really consider law school over being a rock star? Personally, it was a search for meaning and purpose in my life.
Let’s start out by talking about the nearly 10-year gap between albums: What happened during the time? We had attempted to do a record in ‘05, but it just wasn’t happening. I ended up moving to Vegas and didn’t play music again until 2009. It was a strange time for me. I moved back to LA after some serious life changes and reconnected with making music. We ended up supporting Sunny Day Real Estate on their reunion tour. That tour was a wonderful experience and definitely sparked my interest in being a band again. The timeline is Vegas craziness from ‘05-to-‘08 then return to LA and Sunny Day Real Estate tour in ’08-to-‘09 then writing new record in ‘10-’11.
Did you and Pedro stay in contact over the years? I didn’t stay in touch with anyone while I was away. I totally disconnected from the life I had known in LA.
What brought you guys back together? My return to LA made it possible for the band to reform.
Obviously you guys are older, but what else has changed about the band since Kill Them With Kindness? Things have changed, but it’s still the same animal. Being in a band that you take seriously demands your full attention and effort. If I can’t give it that I won’t bother. That’s why I quit doing it until I was ready to really commit again.
Can you talk about the lineup changes? Lineup changes? Hmmm.... It’s too hectic and convoluted to really explain properly. I’m the only original member playing these songs at the moment. What can you tell me about the songs on A Gentle Reminder? The songs on A Gentle Reminder are really a reflection of the strange, dark journey I took. It is about reconnecting, realigning and finding meaning in an inhospitable landscape. Do you approach songwriting on this record the same way you did in the past? I approached songwriting in a completely new way on this record. I have always had a difficult

time figuring out how to be an artist. I read a book called The Artist’s Way that had a profound impact on my artistic process. It was a much healthier approach as opposed to my old selfdestructive methods.
What was it like working with Nate Mendel on bass? It was awesome working with Nate. He is super talented and a really fun and funny person to be around. I am still surprised he thought it was a worthy project to be involved with. It’s the same process whether you are in a mega band or in The Jealous Sound: four people in a room playing music. Have you found a new bass player yet or is Nate sticking with the band? Josh Staples played bass on two of the tracks on the record and sang back up. He has been touring with us since the band reformed. Nate played on the record, but being in the Foo Fighters and playing arenas kinda take precedent over getting in a van with The Jealous Sound. You’ve been on the road for a while now. Do you plan to tour much this spring and summer? We just completed a 30 day US tour during February and are figuring out what is next. We hope to be back out this summer. Does it feel odd to be touring again having taken so much time off? It actually feels completely normal to be touring again. The first show of the Sunny Day Real Estate tour felt like walking on the moon, but now it feels like the perfect place to be.

MUSIC CITY’S TIN PAN SOUTH World’s Largest
Songwriter Festival held in Nashville
BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
I
N HIS MASSIVE HIT “LULLABY,” Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins gently chides Los Angeles as being “like Nashville, with a tan.” But the group of performers gathered at the recent Tin Pan South festival, including Mullins and a who’s-who of the most-lauded tunesmiths, basked in their own natural light. The setting for the annual gathering is bathed in the neon glow of Nashville’s clubscene, deep in the heart of the music mecca that boasts the Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman Auditorium, legendary recording studios, and a rich cultural history that deftly blends fine arts and politics. Tin Pan South is the world’s largest songwriter festival and is usually presented every year in the last week of March. Held at ten venues in the intimate confines of downtown Music City, the 20th edition brought an astounding roster of artists as diverse as Dierks Bentley, Josh Turner, Jimmy Webb, Paul Williams, Felix Cavaliere (of the Rascals) Peter Yarrow (of Peter Paul and Mary), John Oates (of Hall And), even Tiffany (yes, *that* Tiffany) for eagerly anticipated sessions that often featured surprisingly complimentary line-ups of friends and colleagues, performing acoustic or drastically pared-down renditions of songs from their impressive catalog of hits. The songs may have made others famous, but they’ve kept these enthralling writer/performers in demand to pen even more material for generations of eager acts. Quite often, the between-song banter and instinctive interplay of the artists was even more enthralling than the emotionally-charged versions of their hits. “I know ‘intimate’ is an overused word,” said Erika Wollam Nichols, Festival co-director and general manager of The Bluebird Café, ground-zero for the festival and performing songwriters in general “But Tin Pan is really an intimate event.” The venue, praised by Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift and a host of performers around the world, is a tiny room with great acoustics and enough history to fill an encyclopedia. “At shows here, the artists just play off of each other, within arms-length of the crowd.” When it started out, 20 years ago, she added, there was just J. Fred Knoblock and friends, saying, “Why can’t we create a destination event based on songwriters?” Knoblock’s persistence paid off because the successful songwriter has played nearly every Tin Pan, often in the intimate (there’s that word again) in-the-round settings he helped instigate. “There’s a magic that happens when you can play and look right at the other performers,” he says. “And when you are that close to the crowd, you get immediate feedback from new material. If it’s a stinker, you almost know it while you’re playing it.” Knoblock’s hits have continued for the past three decades with cuts by Faith Hill, George Strait, Etta James, Ray Charles, Trisha Yearwood and more. At 3rd and Lindsley, a comfortable listening room on Third Avenue
South, Jason Isbell, Darrell Scott and Hayes Carll held court with an engaging performance, featuring plenty of good-natured humor and stories. Often the three would instinctively collaborate on tunes, with Scott deftly taking impromptu leads. Afterward, the laid-back Isbell, an Alabama native who can easily sell out much larger venues on his own, said, “That was a really good show. Sometimes when you do one like this, it might not work if the people don’t get along but I know Hayes - and I’ve seen Darrell play but never played a show with him before.” For a show like this one, “I just go with it, I don’t plan anything in advance and it works better that way.” The laconic performer, formerly known as a principle songwriter in Athensbased Drive-By Truckers, was a bit more verbal than in his headlining shows, backed by his band the 400 Unit. “I might say a sentence or two or something about the song, but at a show like this, I can tell the story a bit more. And people like to hear that. I enjoy it, myself. But I don’t like it when people tell the same stories too much because they end up becoming a routine.” Nashville has around 350 professional songwriters on staff at various music publishing companies. In a cluster of buildings along 12th Avenue, they work daily, often in formal office hours, to create songs on demand for scores of famous and hopeful performers. But Atlanta-born singer-songwriter Chas Sandford is not one of those songwriters. “Some of these writers say, ‘I’ve got 3,000 songs,” he said after a dynamic show at The Rutledge. “But that’s like having 200 children,” he added, laughing. “How are you gonna feed them all?! I think you need to really focus.” His fine-tuning has paid off with some of the most popular songs of the last two decades -- including “Missing You,” a worldwide hit for John Waite and Tina Turner. For the recipient of twelve ASCAP “Most Performed Songs” awards, writing is “like carving out a piece of my soul. Then I have to go let the tissue grow back.” The gregarious writer-producer-performer has helmed showcases at Tin Pan South for the past six years. His show at The Rutledge played to a packed house of fans and was one of the best events of the entire festival. The stellar lineup included Shawn Mullins, Chuck Cannon and Doug Johnson with surprise cameos by Jim Peterik (“Vehicle,” “Eye Of The Tiger”) and Jack Tempchin (“Peaceful Easy Feeling”). Locally, music fans are lucky to have several intimate venues devoted to the presentation and promotion of singer-songwriters and many of the featured Tin Pan South performers play here regularity. The most famous, of course, is Eddie’s Attic in Decatur (www. eddiesattic.com). The titular Eddie Owen now presents a hand-picked selection of world-class writers at the Red Clay Theater in Duluth (www.eddieowenpresents. com). Roswell’s Swallow At The Hollow is an equally cozy performance hall and restaurant. Check with the clubs for full schedules and make plans now to attend the 21st Annual Tin Pan South Festival. For more details: or call 800/657-6910. Jason Isbell performs at Eddies Attic Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15 at Red Clay Theater.

2012 NBA PLAYOFF PREVIEW BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

HE LOCKOUT-SHORTENED NBA regular season was an emotional roller coaster. Back-to-back-to-back games. Feuds. Injuries. And that was just the craziness surrounding Lamar Odom! Now that the Playoffs have started for 16 Odomless teams, the drama only goes up a few notches. To help you sort things out, here is INsite’s preview to one of the craziest months on the annual sports calendar. EASTERN CONFERENCE BIGGEST SLEEPER, INDIANA PACERS How good are the Pacers? Well, even in a 66-game season, they managed more wins than they had since ’05. Still, we generally stay away from cute, trendy underdog picks. But with this scrappy bunch, it’s just impossible to ignore. We like Danny Granger’s consistency, Paul George’s athleticism and Roy Hibbert’s wingspan. After beating Orlando in the opening round, Indiana will face the Heat in a hotly contested six games.

The Clips will get past the stubborn Grizzlies and shock a Spurs team that’s been coasting.
BIGGEST SLACKER, LA LAKERS Though the Denver Nuggets have a lunch pail mentality that we love around the office, the Lakers’ talent will see them into the second round. There though, Kobe Bryant (nearly 28 points a night) and crew will run into an OKC Thunder storm. That isn’t the big surprise. What is, however, is the manner in which KD and James Harden will thrash them. The Thunder won the regular season series 2-1. If the Lakers win more than one in their playoff series, color us shocked. STAR TO WATCH, RUSSELL WESTBROOK We doubt the president of the Russell Westbrook Fans twitter account would even argue that the star PG is OKC’s second fiddle. But for the Thunder to reign this postseason, it’s gonna take Russell’s 24 points and five assists to compliment Durant’s steady output. We’ve seen Westbrook weave through lanes all season, so we know he’s capable. We’ve also seen a tantrum or two from the 23-year-old when things haven’t gone his way. What’s within reason? No idea. The closest baseball has had to a free agent like this was Alex Rodriguez in 2001, when he received $252 million for 10 years. BIGGEST SLACKER, BOSTON CELTICS If the Atlanta Hawks had a 100% healthy Al Horford, we don’t think this first-round matchup would be that close. But with Al’s uncertainty, the C’s could take things to six games. Boston won’t win the series because the only person in green matching Kevin Garnett’s intensity is smashing stuff in The Avengers. Paul Pierce looks spent. Rajon Rondo looks scared. Young Avery Bradley looks good, but he won’t stop Joe Johnson’s overdue offensive outburst.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS BY B. LOVE

UMMER HASN’T OFFICIALLY arrived, but you wouldn’t know it from Atlanta temperatures. It wasn’t that much hotter when we went to Panama, where my lady got a chance to rock her hot new bikini from GURIA BEACHWEAR (www. guriabeachwear.com.br). The line (which was featured in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue) was launched by Camila Ckless in 2007, and her gorgeous designs offer flattering silhouettes for women of all shapes and sizes (from XS to XL, with cup sizes up to F). Sexy and sophisticated, with many mix and match options, Guria’s suits can make anyone look like a supermodel. As global warming heats up, the sun is becoming increasingly brutal, especially in the tropical environments in which my lady and I tend to travel. Thankfully, our good friends over at KISS MY FACE (www.kissmyface. com) sent over some of their latest organic products for us to try out, including SPF 30 Sun Spray Lotion and “Miss Treated” Shampoo & Conditioner, all of which use natural ingredients such as aloe, rosemary leaf extract, chamomile leaf extract, lavender and eucalyptus oil to protect and rejuvenate sun-scorched skin and hair. At $8 for a 16.5 oz bottle, they’re also a heck of a deal. One of the biggest problems with sun exposure is dehydration: During our adventures in the Peruvian Amazon, I suffered a mild form of heat stroke after getting too much sun and not enough fluids. So, when we head to the lake this summer, I’m gonna make sure to take our new water bottle from BAMBOO BOTTLE COMPANY (www.bamboobottleco.com). BPA-filled plastic bottles are bad for your
health and the environment, while aluminum bottles have a metallic taste that remind me of the glasses my grandma used to use. But these bamboo bottles look awesome, and the bamboo sheath both protects and insulates the removable glass bottle inside. As God is my witness, I’ll never go thirsty again!
