Do you need help? If you are a woman with a history of childhood sexual abuse, you may suffer from a number of symptoms. If these symptoms are left untreated, it can impair your ability to deal with everyday events, work or even function in healthy relationships. Many people who have experienced a traumatic event like you have, may suffer from one or all of these symptoms. You may have nightmares, trouble sleeping, memory problems, trouble focusing, avoid social situations, or become easily agitated or startled. Emory University is looking for participants for a research study on the effects of an FDA approved medication for the symptoms of PTSD, memory and learning in women between the ages of 19 and 55 who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. You do not need a diagnosis of PTSD to participate. Compensation will be provided for participation. If you are interested in learning more about this research opportunity please call 404-712-9536 or email clecour@emory.edu.

FILM
EASY EMMA Q&A with Hollywood’s newest popular kid BY JENNI WILLIAMS
E
MMA STONE STARS IN THE NEW comedy, Easy A, a movie about a smart, head-on-straight high school senior with a fabulous reputation. She lets one fib about losing her virginity circulate the halls, and all of a sudden finds herself a social and moral outcast—similar to Hester Prynne, whom they just happen to be studying. Except, Olive is pretending to have sex with any less than popular boy in need of an ego boost, so the similarities are numbered. Right or wrong, Stone brings a genuine, charming and big-hearted girl to life onscreen, taking her own on-screen reputation to new heights. INsite sits down with Stone as she discusses her early beginnings as the humble hottie in Superbad to the lead in the highly anticipated adapted film, The Help. Ms. Stone offers her tips on staying so cool, continuing to expand her career and even shares some tips on having great fake sex. What about Easy A that made you want to do it? I loved the script. It’s really rare to read something so well-written. Olive is such a flushed out, funny female character. I liked her perspective. She’s no damsel in distress. Knowing this crowd, how much of the scenes were actually improv? (Laughs) A fair amount of the scenes with Patty and Stanley were improv. Olive talked so much in the script that I didn’t really need to add anything to her, though. She didn’t need a lot of improvement. How was moving into the lead role different for you? Like the whole 4th wall thing – talking straight into the camera, doing long monologues. That stuff (groans). This required laser focus –I learned to do what I had to do to sustain my energy and focus. I learned a lot about myself, not just about acting, but about my work ethic. How do you decide which roles are for you? It’s pretty simple, really. I chose this script because I liked her. It’s not a conscious choice on my part to select certain roles. If it’s something I really want to do, I’ll audition for it. How much Emma is in Olive? Any similarities? I was home-schooled, so I was on my own.
I didn’t really have that high school experience. But, I understood her, knew where she was coming from. My family is similar to hers too. I have very open, bright parents. We talk about everything. Were you nervous that you might be sending a controversial message about teen sex? You know, I was really concerned with that for quite awhile. I turned it over in my mind a lot. What Olive learns from this and the fact that she is a virgin is an important thing to remember. The number one thing I find important is the importance of honesty—either with yourself, your friends and your parents, as hard as it may be. She could have just been honest from the beginning, she realizes, as she sees her life crumbling around her. It’s about being who you really are, being safe, and not to feel pressure from outside sources, staying true to your beliefs.
On that note, what’s the secret to great fake sex? (Laughs) Gee, there are a lot of angles to go with here. It depends on what you’ve got going on. Yelling, banging on the wall, jumping up and down, rustling sounds. Those usually work. Throw something against the wall. Go big or go home, I always say. John Hughes is big in this movie. How much of an impact did his stuff have on you? All of his movies made me feel different about life. The boombox over the head is iconic in all of our lives, I think. I am crazy about John Hughes movies. I can totally relate to Olive wanting her life to be an 80’s movie. Do you think this movie will be timeless, like his? With the role that technology plays in this film, it feels very time sensitive. It’s definitely a modern times movie, but the characters are timeless. So, you’ve got quite a lot lined up, including working with Justin Timberlake…What was that like? So much fun. It’s insane to shoot with him on Hollywood Boulevard, though. Every second it was like, “what’s up JT?!” Can you give us the scoop on a possible Zombieland sequel? You’ll have to see. We all loved making that movie and we’d love to see what happens next… especially in 3D (laughs).
SAVE OUR SCHOOLS Director Davis Guggenheim Says Great Teachers Make the Difference in his New Documentary Waiting for “Superman” BY MARCI MILLER
Y
OU COULDN’T TURN ON THE TV or read the news this past month without seeing or hearing about the new documentary, Waiting for “Superman” which takes a controversial look at America’s broken public education system. In his new film, Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim explores where our country has gone wrong and how we can fix our schools. We recently sat down to discuss the movie and explore the steps that will make education across the country better for every child. What are you hoping that Waiting for “Superman” will do for America’s Public Education System? A movie can’t teach a kid and it can’t write education policy but it can challenge how people think and what they believe. A lot of families believe you get the school you get and you get the education you get. There used to be this feeling that school lifted you out and for a lot of people, it’s the opposite… school is just there to just push you through and hopefully this film will change that expectation. Have you shown the film to public school teachers that may be part of the teacher’s union? If so, what has been their reaction? It’s a full spectrum. There’s a small percentage that are very defensive, but that’s less than 5%. The majority of even union teachers get it. They feel that the system and the rules, even of their own union, are making it harder for them. It’s demoralizing when you are doing a great job but not everyone around you is doing a great job… the solution to all of this is great teachers. What you see in these great schools comes from great teachers. You highlight several successful charter schools in the film, what do you think has made them work so well? The high performing charters really implement philosophies into their schools and they are blowing away everybody. And even though they’ve popped up in different places and have their own kind of style, the ingredients to their success are all lined up…longer school days, more school days, higher expectations, real accountability, and great teachers. Why is it so important to hold teachers accountable? We do so little in evaluating teachers…if teachers want to be treated like professionals, like doctors or lawyers, we have to learn how to measure what they do, how to evaluate them and it has to be done in a sensitive way. We spend very little time and money telling teachers how they are doing. If you’ve had a teacher that’s been ineffective for multiple years you have to get in their and help them and if that still doesn’t work, you have to move them out.
WITH THE ROLE THAT TECHNOLOGY PLAYS IN THIS FILM, IT FEELS VERY TIME SENSITIVE. IT’S DEFINITELY A MODERN TIMES MOVIE, BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE TIMELESS. PG 6 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2010
From your research, is there one country that American could be modeling after? You reference Finland in the film, what are they doing it right? In Finland they put so much emphasis on
recruiting great teachers, educating great teachers. It’s really hard to get into a teaching school there and if you graduate, you can get a great spot as a teacher. And if you can become a great teacher, you can get any other job. It’s a whole different way of looking at teaching and we can learn a lot from them…we don’t revere teachers the way Japan and Finland do. What would be the role of parents to make schools better? I think that whenever you see parents fighting for their kids, things get better. When parents organize, things start to change. You say in the film that your kids attend private school. After making this movie have you switched or thought more about switching your children to public school? Well, we think about it…we just recently went back to visit our neighborhood school. I don’t think you can blame any parent for doing anything for their kids. The trick is not to feel guilty, the trick is to do what is right for your kid, but fight for your neighborhood school, even if your kids don’t go to that school, that school educates the kids in your neighborhood. And that is what we do. If there was one goal of this movie it would be to get people to care about other people’s children as much as they care about their own…its now gotten to the point where I care how every kid gets educated because it effects how safe our streets are, it effects the economy…the sort of “taking care of our own” mentality and putting your head in the sand has gotten us to this point. How can people get more information or become more involved? Our website is really amazing. We spent a lot of time and money on it. And it’s built for people to go from that heavy experience of the end of the movie to action. On our website, you can literally see what’s happening in Georgia (or any state), there is a local campaign manager they have a local email and phone number and they can tell you “this is what is happening, here are the reformers, here is what’s at stake.” And the easiest thing you can do is go the website and you can PLEDGE to see the movie… and for everyone who pledges, you get a gift certificate to help a teacher of your choice. Just the act of pledging to see the movie is really simple and the first step in helping a teacher.

The World Cup this summer helped create awareness of the different cultures from a variety of countries around the world. Those living in Atlanta may be surprised to find that there are so many restaurants offering authentic cuisines from far away countries. Queen of Sheba, tucked in a shopping center on the corner of N. Druid Hills and Briarcliff Rd., has been serving great Ethipoina cuisine for 13 years. They offer the full experience of Ethiopian dining. When you walk in to the restaurant your eyes are drawn to the culture specific decor and all the Ethiopian art on the walls. Their menu is strictly Ethiopian. Dishes are characterized by the variety of spices and herbs from which they get their exotic taste and smell. The menu offers both hot and spicy options as well as mild. The vegetable dishes are made from lentils, peas, greens and others seasoned with mild herbs. Entrees are served on top of Injera which is a sponge like bread. It is flat and round and is to be eaten using your hands while grabbing the food from the plate. Most entrees come in options of beef, poultry, lamb or vegetarian. The Ethiopian cuisine lends itself well for sharing as dishes are served as samplings among meat, vegetables and dipping purees. For groups of five or more there are specially priced combination platters that allow patrons to enjoy a wide variety of offerings. Queen of Sheba offers a lunch buffet for just $7.99 weekdays. They have full bar and live jazz is played every Thursday evening. Queen of Sheba has been voted Best African Restaurant by Atlanta Magazine for 7 years in a row.
For 9 years, Ledet Ethiopian restaurant has brought the real taste of Ethiopia to Atlanta. They have an outstanding reputation for excellent food and customer service and are the winner of the Agere Award 2006 for Best in Food. Since opening their second location in 2007, Ledet Restaurant on Briarcliff Road has continued the strive toward perfection, both in their dishes and service. They are a family-owned and operated business. In fact, Ledet restaurant is named after the daughter of Hiwot, the restaurant’s original founder. This name was chosen because Hiwot’s daughter, Ledet, was born on the birth date of Jesus, or Christmas, according to the Ethiopian calendar. In Amharic, a Semitic language spoken widely in Ethiopia, “ledet” means birthday! As a basis of Ethiopian cookery, injera, a delicious flatbread made from teff flour, lies beneath almost every recipe. Injera is used to grasp thick stews prepared from meat and vegetables. The Ethiopian meal is unique in that it is consumed without any utensils. Instead, the right hand is used to tear pieces of injera to grasp the meat and vegetables. These include Goden Tibs (riblets), Lega Tibs (beef) Doara Tibs (spiced chicken) and Gomen (collared greens), Miser (lentil) and Fried Tilapia. You will also find unique appetizers like Sambusa which is a fried pastry stuffed with lentil beans or beef. Each and every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Ledet offers finest Ethiopian traditional & modern music. They present famous Ethiopian singers and dancers from all over the world. Check their website for upcoming engagements.

TWO MEN AND A CONSPIRACY What do you get when you cross Lost, V and The West Wing? No clue, but when you find out, tell Blair Underwood and Jason Ritter, stars of NBC’s new action drama, The Event. BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
I
F YOU CAUGHT THE FIRST FEW episodes of The Event, you saw creator Nick Wauters tossing a lot at the viewer— disappearing jets, cruise ship abductions and secret detention centers in Alaska. But we’ve had shows throw a lot at us before. Some have worked (24) and some haven’t (Flash Forward). NBC’s betting big bucks it has the latter with this one. To help get high concepts across as clearly as possible, the network enlisted the veteran services of Blair Underwood (U.S. President Elias Martinez) and the well-rounded talents of Jason Ritter (mystery unraveler Sean Walker). INsite caught up with the show stars a few days before the series premiere to ascertain classified info on The Event, to learn what separates the show from other fantasy fare and to see if there are any conspiracy theories they actually believe in. I’m so glad that you’re going to tell us all what exactly the event is, right? Blair Underwood: Right. Of course. Of course. Listen, what I can tell you is that The Event is something very eventful, but it is something that can potentially change the course of mankind as we know it. In a nutshell, that’s what is to come. I don’t know if you’ve seen your face plastered on buildings but I have. That has to be exciting. Underwood: I have friends of mine saying, “Listen, dude, I’m tired of seeing your face.” But I think the executive producers and NBC has
been very smart in introducing the characters very methodically. And that transitions and translates to the marketing campaign that you’re referring to in that the campaign is all about the characters.
Jason, how does it feel to go from smaller independent stuff to something as big asThe Event? Jason Ritter: It feels great. After a couple of years of doing that, I felt really ready to jump into something like this and challenge myself. On a show like this where there’s so much money going into it, the pressure is higher but you realize that most of that is coming from your own self and it’s still just a group of people making the best thing that they can and it’s been a lot of fun. This project in particular has been a dream.
Do you personally believe in any kind of conspiracy theory? Ritter: I think one of the reasons that we like conspiracy theories is that we like to feel like there is a group of people who are so smart and powerful that they can pull the wool over an entire country. That certainly makes us feel like somehow we’re protected. Sometimes it’s just fun. There are a few conspiracy theories that I believe in, not too many. Area 51 is an interesting one, that strange aircraft landing in New Mexico. I don’t think Elvis Presley is still alive. That’s one that I can’t quite get into. But I enjoy those unanswered questions.
Do you think we’ll see the event before the first season is over? Underwood: That’s a good question. We can’t really answer that right now and just because we don’t know.

so excited to find out that our creator Nick Wauters had been brewing this story for four full years as his fantasy pilot.
What jumped out of the script to get you interested? Ritter: For me, I just was fascinated by having to put all these puzzle pieces together. Seeing these characters jump back and forth through time. For instance my character be in a completely different place emotionally in the space of 11 days was really intriguing to me.

There’s kind of been this brand of drama, you know, of high suspense, sci-fi mystery thriller recently with shows like Lost, 24, Heroes and V. How does The Event kind of set itself apart from the pack? Ritter: Well, I think that one of the things is, and again not trying to take away anything from any of those shows, but The Event is coming at a time where we’ve seen all of those shows and I think the producers have seen where those shows have succeeded and where those shows have left people wanting something different or are being satisfied or dissatisfied in any number ways. And so they’ve carved out their own story and way to intrigue people. One of the things that they really wanted to make sure is that they knew exactly where they were going. And I think that’s why they were

DISNEY SING IT: FAMILY HITS (Disney Interactive)
Systems: PS3, Wii Confession time: I had over 30 Disney films on DVD before I had a child, and even went to Disneyworld for my honeymoon. Now that I have a daughter, I’m the perfect target audience for this title, which allows players to sing along with 30 classic songs from films such as 101 Dalmations (“Cruela De Vil”), The Jungle Book (“Bare Necessities”), The Lion King (“Hakuna Matata”) and Toy Story (“You’ve Got A Friend In Me”). It’s a fun, family-friendly party game that encourages everyone to get in on the karaoke action, but its replay value is seriously limited.
ETRIAN ODYSSEY III: THE DROWNED CITY (Atlus)
System: DS This RPG franchise puts players in command of a party of adventurers on a quest to return their oncegreat city to its former glory. With 10 new character classes to choose from, you create, customize and train up to five characters to explore expansive dungeons, sail vast seas, and engage in battle with a host of menacing monsters. With three possible endings and wireless multiplayer options, the replay value is excellent, making the third entry in the Etrian Odyssey series one of the best DS RPG’s on the market.
GUITAR HERO: WARRIORS OF ROCK (Activision)
Systems: PS3, Wii, X360 At this point most gamers have decided whether they’re fans of the Guitar Hero franchise or not, and for those who are it’s really just a question of what each new title brings to the table. Warriors Of Rock is noteworthy for two things– an extensive track listing featuring over 90 songs (including Rush’s epic concept album, 2112, in its entirety) and an all-new Quest Mode that follows eight characters who must work
together to help the Demi-God of Rock save rock ‘n’ roll. For those about to rock, we salute you.
HALO: REACH (Microsoft)
System: X360 In this prequel to the best-selling Xbox franchise of all time, the story follows the last stand of the heroic soldiers of Noble Team on planet Reach, the last line of defense between Covenant and Earth. The story is darker, the environments more epic, and the battles more brutal than ever before, with new weapons and abilities added to the familiar Halo arsenal. With the biggest online multiplayer experience of its kind, advanced AI and great graphics, it’s yet another classic addition to the storied Halo series.
METROID: OTHER M (Nintendo)
System: Wii One of Nintendo’s most iconic characters, bounty hunter Samus Aran has been protecting the galaxy for nearly 25 years now, in 11 action-adventure games spanning consoles from the original NES (1986’s Metroid) to the Wii. Other M’s storyline picks up where 1994’s Super Metroid left off, revealing Samus’ rich back-story as she explores a decommissioned space facility called the Bottle Ship. The game switches between 1st and 3rd-person perspective, but it feels as if the advances in storytelling came at the expense of gameplay. Longtime fans will be disappointed.
SPIDER-MAN: SHATTERED DIMENSIONS (Activision)
Systems: DS, PS3, Wii, X360 My interest in the Spider-Man games seemed to vanish around the same time the film franchise went into the toilet. For diehard fans, Shattered Dimensions allows you to play as the wall-crawling superhero in four parallel universes, each with a different Spider-Man iteration boasting different costumes and abilities. The myriad locations and worlds (including a 1930s-style noir world and a futuristic cityscape set in the year 2099) make the game visually interesting, but the linear storytelling makes it a bit of a bore for fans of previous titles’ sandbox approach.

TRUMP Movie Reviews CARD CATFISH (PG-13)
★★★★★ Release Date: Oct. 1
First and foremost, do not let anyone tell you what this movie is about. I’ll say that filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost prove that budget and connections are not the only recipe for a fantastic film in their movie about Ariel’s brother Nev. They had no idea what a random attempt at a semi-interesting subject would lead them to. But that’s where we have to stop. Don’t even let anyone even give you the gist. problems are the main focus and everything else is incidental. As Chenery, Diane Lane is very pretty, but she overacts even when trying to be restrained, evoking the overly expressive and mannered style that audiences found cloying half a century ago. In her defense, she’s probably trying her best in a production that looks cheap and is constrained by a script littered with cliches. John Malkovitch as horse trainer Lucien Laurin occasionally gives the film a bit of life, but even then he’s reduced to being the comic relief, his funny clothes providing the basis for almost all of the humor. Everything else is a complete washout. Blake Lively plays a spurned love interest of Doug’s, but the character is absent from the movie until the third act. While we always know where every character is coming from, the script and the pacing has some trouble naturally getting there. But this is a minor complaint when stacked up against Affleck’s strong lead performance and serious directing chops. Gone Baby Gone is the stronger overall film, but the three action scenes of The Townare filled with so much excitement, drama, and comedy that they made me wonder what Affleck could do with a straight-up action film rather than contained action scenes in an intimate crime drama. WithThe Town, Affleck has established himself as directing talent to be reckoned with and serves up a reminder that his acting skills shouldn’t be disregarded. But if you still want to hold on to your bizarre Affleck-hate, you’re only hurting yourself if you pass on this solid drama.

somewhere, right? He has to be. The man was money-grubbing corporate slime who got exactly what he deserved at the end of the ’87 contemporary classic. And from the opening scenes of this 2010 revisit, you learn that’s a lot. Not only did the crooked broker lose precious years to prison, but he also saw his stock plummet in the eyes of his family, namely his daughter, Winnie (Carey Mulligan). Winnie’s grown up to become a freedom-fighting blogger who’s in love with Jake (Shia LaBoeuf), a successful broker with a heart. It’s 2008 and Jake’s firm is hit by the economic crunch harder than most financial institutions of the time. The managing director (Frank Langella) even commits suicide. When Gekko (Michael Douglas) resurfaces, Jake tries to reconnect father and child for familial and financial reasons. Dude, have you not read the villains list? It’s here where Gordon shows flashes of his old self. Memorable quotes (“If you stop telling lies on me, I’ll stop telling the truth on you”) and questionable stares fill every 15 minutes. Money Never Sleeps is just like Wall Street…only it’s nothing like it. Shia gives the Oliver Stone release energy and a sense of now. But somehow the pacing feels off, the banking crisis back story already seems dated and most attempts at cool come off cold. Still, fans of the original should see this movie. If for nothing else, a few of the father-daughter encounters reaffirm Gordon Gekko’s position near the top of any asshole tally..

BORED TO DEATH
HBO’s latest comedy centers on writer Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman), who takes out an ad hawking his services as an unlicensed PI. The cast is rounded out by his buddy Ray (Zach Galifianakis) and publisher George (Ted Danson). Though not laughout-loud funny, the show is subtle, smart and creative. THE KILLER INSIDE ME
Based on a cult fiction classic by Jim Thompson (The Grifters), this modern film-noir features an impressive cast that includes Casey Affleck as a murderous deputy, Kate Hudson as his schoolteacher girlfriend, and Jessica Alba as a hooker. It’s a chilling murder ballad with graphic violence and biting dialogue that should appeal to fans of No Country For Old Men.
KEIR GILCHRIST
SHERLOCK HOLMES DOUBLE FEATURE
Over 60 years before Robert Downey Jr. reinvented the role, Basil Rathbone was defining Sherlock Holmes for 1940s audiences. This double feature pairs Sherlock Holmes Faces Death and Sherlock Holmes in Washington, both beautifully restored in 35mm. Despite their age, these classic mysteries remain as gripping as ever today.
BLUEGREEN
Building buzz on the indie festival circuit, documentary filmmaker Ben Keller’s labor of love explores the environmental connection between surfers and the ocean through interviews with 13 influential subjects, including former pro surfer Keith Malloy, 7-time Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley, Surfline.com (the go-to source for worldwide wave forecasts) founder Sean Collins, and Surfrider Foundation CEO Jim Moriarty. Rather than merely celebrating the sport, Keller underlines the environmental impact of man-made pollution such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, emphasizing the critical importance the ocean plays in our daily lives and encouraging viewers to protect it.
OCEAN ADVENTURES WITH JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAU
This PBS series follows Emmy award-winning conservationist Jean-Michel Cousteau, the first-born son of the legendary Jacques Cousteau and founder of Ocean Futures Society, as he and his diving team explore seldom-seen ecosystems. From the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon to the endangered sharks of South Africa and Polynesia, from the struggling beluga whale populations of the high Arctic to the effects of pollution and over-fishing on the diverse wildlife of the Northwest Hawaiian Island Archipelago, the show provides an in-depth look at the creatures of the underwater world. Ultimately, viewers gain a greater understanding of friendly and ferocious animals alike, showing why it is crucial that we protect their natural habitats.

Diane Lane On John Malkovich, Being A Mom & Secretariat BY MARCI MILLER
I
T’S PRETTY DIFFICULT NOT TO love Diane Lane. A Hollywood veteran with over 30 years in the business (she made her debut at the age of 14 in 1979’s A Little Romance), Lane has proven that you can grow older with grace and style, and remains as gorgeous as ever at the age of 45. The daughter of New York acting coach Burton Lane and Playboy Playmate Colleen Farrington (Miss October 1957), Lane led a colorful life that included running away from home, being kidnapped by her mother and appearing in teen classics such as Rumble Fish and The Outsiders, all before she’d reached the age of 18. No less an authority than Andy Warhol declared her, “the undisputed female lead of Hollywood’s new rat pack.” But after turning down lead roles in Splash and Risky Business to make the forgettable Streets Of Fire, Lane’s career languished for several years before the TV Miniseries Lonesome Dove reminded audiences of her talent. In the years since, Lane has worked steadily, delivering impressive turns in films such as Chaplin, A Walk On The Moon, Unfaithful and Under The Tuscan Sun. Her offscreen life has flourished as well, including a 2004 marriage to actor Josh Brolin and charity work with organizations such as Heifer International (which battles world hunger) and Artists For Peace & Justice (a Haiti relief organization). Now, she’s starring as Penny Tweedy, the owner of legendary racehorse Secretariat in the Disney film of the same name. Lane recently sat down with us to discuss her latest project. Was the fact that the real Penny Tweedy (Secratariat’s owner who Lane portrays in the film) was going to be involved in the film a factor in you taking on this role? Yes, it’s really nice to be in a film that’s so uplifting and it was a definite perk to be able to spend time with Penny. I would call it more than a perk, I would say it’s the thing that I’ll be most sentimental about for the rest of my life. It was definitely a dream come true …the issue of Penny being female in the field of horseracing is interesting because I think she was living up to her father’s legacy of training horses. People portrayed it as if she had no right to be there. It’s sort of interesting that she got hijacked by the media and really very bated by the media. One of the lessons I took from her personally was that she did not stoop to defense in the onslaught of any of this and if they wanted to diminish her and interpret her in a sexist manner it was
at their own peril because she is not a barking dog, she is a fighter. Let them bark all they want…in the end history is hers. There is a scene where following a loss, Penny goes back and apologizes to her jockey and trainer after blowing up at them. Do you think that is something unique to a female owner, which a male owner would not do? I think there is a level of grace that is implicit in being female; it’s just a higher standard of conduct (laughter). I think that most women are apologists and we’re always supposed to factor in people’s feeling. Even for me as a woman, we’re often trained to mollify and quell…rather than let somebody have it….sometimes people will sacrifice integrity for popularity and that is one of the things that is not a motivating factor for Penny.

Your chemistry with John Malkovich (plays trainer Lucien Laurin) in the film was amazing. How was it to work with him? We got along very well and I would love to work with him again. He’s such a gift to everybody he works with. He has such a high standard and he is so well-versed. He is really a powerhouse and I credit his theatre background and his directing… and his insightfulness…he’s just a very gifted human being. He brought so much to the story that wouldn’t have been there had he not been cast for the film. What did you like best about working with director Randall Wallace? I liked his sense of seeing the archetype… He’s a romantic, and he’s got an interesting blend of capacity for tenderness in his perspective, even more than I in some cases. Can you relate to the pain Penny felt when she had to be away from her and family, like when you are shooting on location? Oh, yes. Because it’s territory I know all too well. Especially when you have just the one (her only child, Eleanor Lambert, is 17). You can’t say, “Well, little Billy is only 4, so I’ll have another whack at this…” You only have one chance. You’ve always had a great interest in horses, but you don’t ride in this film at all…did you push to have at least “one scene” riding a horse? No, because it’s not the traditional way… owning and breeding is different than training … everybody has their role around the horse…its more important for the horse to be ridden by someone who will be guiding it to its ultimate goal.
I THINK THERE IS A LEVEL OF GRACE THAT IS IMPLICIT IN BEING FEMALE; IT’S JUST A HIGHER STANDARD OF CONDUCT.

2010 FALL
Movie Preview BY JENNI WILLIAMS
S
ettle in folks—This fall, prepare your screen-savvy eyes for a mosh of sequels, scary movies, and 3D glasses. Plus, the run for Oscar nods begin with the return to the screen by some of our favorites making their run at some pretty powerful story telling. Between Hillary Swank as a modern-day Erin Brochovich, Patrick Wilson as a ladies man turned proud father, and Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint making a run at life outside of Hogwart’s, this season promises fresh stories, new roles and a guarantee to keep you in the dark (theatre, that is). So, clear your calendar and buy some popcorn. It’s the best time of year to be a movie lover, and this season is no different.
OCTOBER 1
BARRY MUNDAY
Who: Chris D’Arienzo directs. Patrick Wilson. Judy Greer. Missi Pyle. Colin Hanks. What: Based on the book by Frank Turner Hollon, it’s the story of a man waking up to serious confusion… He’s been attacked, robbed and served with a paternity lawsuit by a girl he doesn’t even remember. Worst of all, he has to face it all with no balls, literally. Why you should see it: Because you’ve missed Patrick Wilson.
CASE 39
Who: Christian Alvart directs. Renee Zellweger. Bradley Cooper. Ian McShane. What: A social worker comes to realize that not everyone can be saved, and maybe some shouldn’t be, as she fights to help a mysterious, and extremely dangerous-to-be-around, young girl. Why you should see it: A creepy new twist on The Ring plot. Kids are always the scariest.
DOUCHEBAG
Who: Drake Doremus directs. Andrew Dickler, Ben York Jones, Amy Ferguson. What: Newly engaged Sam Nussbaum decides to devote his last few weeks of bachelorhood to helping his brother find the love of his life, sending the two on a life-altering trek across the country. They discover themselves and each other in a refreshingly genuine comedic fashion, Why you should see it: You won’t recognize anyone in it. It doesn’t need a headliner. Plus, it was An Official Selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
FREAKONOMICS
Who: Heidi Ewing, Alex Gibney, Seth Gordon, Rachel Grady, Eugene Jarecki, Morgan Spurlock direct. What: A documentary covering popular subjects with a liberal tongue. From the mystery behind distinctly race-assigned names to the idea that monetary incentives could bump test scores, the makers of some of the most fascinating documentaries explore the truths behind the subjects we ponder daily. Why you should see it: Oscar nominees paired with economists produce fascinating subject matter. PG 16 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2010
LET ME IN
Who: Matt Reeves directs. Chloe Moretz. Richard Jenkins. What: A remake of the Swedish original, it’s the story of an innocent childhood friendship between not so innocent (and not so child-like) kids. Note that it’s meant to be a drama, not a scary movie, but let’s be real – who can shrug off fangs? Bottom line—a surefire creeper with deep set emotion. Why you should see it: It’s vampires without the overdone sex appeal.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Who: David Fincher directs. Jesse Eisenberg. Andrew Garfield. Rooney Mara. Rashida Jones. Justin Timberlake. What: The story behind the unfolding of Facebook – the good, the bad and the ugly that led to you reconnecting with your elementary school classmates and entering a whole new world of shameless, yet too easy to avoid, self promotion. Why you should see it: Don’t you want to see how it all began?
CHAIN LETTER
Who: Deon Taylor directs. Nikki Reed. Keith David. What: There’s a maniac on the loose, killing teens that refuse to forward his chain letters. Friends are forced to decide between each other and rules, as they race against a fatal deadline. Why you should see it: Now you’ll know what happens when you delete those emails.
OCTOBER 8
WILD TARGET
Who: Jonathan Lynn directs. Bill Nighy. Emily Blunt. Rupert Grint. Rupert Everett. What: Victor Maynard, an nth generation assassin finds his destiny questioned when a target touches a soft spot in his heart. He lands himself in a new untamed circle, instinctively forced to reverse his role, now protecting his former target, as well as his own life. Why you should see it: An interesting cast makes for a fresh and hysterical take on a popular thematic.
DOWN TERRACE
Who: Ben Wheatley directs. Ben Hill. Robin Hill What: An emotional and genuine story of life after jail. They’re cleaning up their act (sort of) and their reputation, all while trying to keep a family together. It’s a mosaic of mistrust glossed over by family ties – in other words, and extreme illustration of a universal issue. Why you should see it: The lead is a father and son pair – leaking an interesting realistic into this familial drama. Plus, it’s highly decorated from festival season.
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE
Who: Steven R. Monroe directs. Jennifer Butler. Chad Lindberg. Tracey Walter. What: A remake of the 1979 thriller, it’s the story of a writer who is brutally attacked by local men during a retreat to her cabin. She manages to escape, barely, but survives with only one goal—revenge.
Why you should see it: The villains are actual people— not nightmare induced characters.
LIFE AS WE KNOW IT
Who: Greg Berlanti directs. Katherine Heigl. Josh Duhamel. What: Opposites in every way, Holly and Eric are thrown into unexpected parenthood via legal obligation, compliments of their best friends’ wills. Forced to settle their differences for the sake of a child, they learn as much about each other as they do about changing diapers. Why you should see it: It channels Three Men & A Baby, Diane Keaton and Knocked Up.
What: A hot shot, who left her sleepy little town as soon as she could, finds herself back home and desperate to liven things up. Her presence sets off a Domino effect of self-discovery and romance throughout the quiet lives of the townspeople, surprising even her own self. Why you should see it: If you liked Happy-GoLucky, this is your sequel.
MY SOUL TO TAKE
JACKASS 3D
Who: Wes Craven directs. Max Thieriot. Emily Meade. What: A quiet town erupts with suspicion that a legendary serial killer has returned to eradicate the community of anyone born the year he was killed. The destined few race against one boy’s dreams in an effort to find the link keeping the Ripper (well, the Ripper’s soul) alive. Why you should see it: All the freakiness of Nightmare on Elm Street, but in 3D.
NOWHERE BOY
Who: Sam Taylor-Wood directs. Aaron Johnson. Kristin Scott Thomas. Anne-Marie Duff. What: From the memoir of Julia Baird comes the never-before told story of what made John Lennon John Lennon, illustrating the backbone of The Beatles and the making of a legend. Why you should see it: It’s a new perspective on one of the world’s greatest rock and rollers.
SECRETARIAT
Who: Randall Wallace directs. Diane Lane. John Malkovich. What: Against all disbelief, housewife and mother, Penny Chenery, takes the (literal) reigns on her father’s stables and aides in producing the first Triple Crown winner in twentyfive years. Why you should see it: It’s based on an incredible true story and filmed on location at the Churchill Downs.
STONE
Who: John Curran directs. Robert DeNiro. Edward Norton. Milla Jovovich What: An exciting story of sex, deception and breaking the law, a parole officer exhausts himself with one last (and seemingly impossible) case before he retires—a smart-assed arsonist, anxious and willing to do anything for early parole, including letting his wife do some of the dirty work. Why you should see it: There is Oscar potential for all lead cast members.
TAMARA DREWE
Who: Stephen Frears directs. Gemma Arterton. Roger Allam. Dominic Cooper.
OCTOBER 15
Who: Jeff Tremaine directs. Johnny Knoxville. Bam Bam. Steve-O. What: Porter-potty slingshots, paintball and The Blob (in a duck suit), gorillas in the living room, among other things. Why you should see it: All the unbelievable pranks… in 3D.
OCTOBER 22
THE COMPANY MEN
Who: John Wells directs. Ben Affleck. Tommy Lee Jones. Maria Bello. Kevin Coster. Chris Cooper. What: Three guys cope with the life that corporate downsizing forces them into—struggling with family issues, their own reputations and the teetering unpredictability of their futures. Why you should see it: This group is really good at playing the down and out.
HEREAFTER
Who: Clint Eastwood directs. Bryce Dallas Howard. Matt Damon. Jenifer Lewis. What: We meet three individuals, all suffering a hard dose of reality when faced with their own mortality. Strangers once, their lives converge as they work towards entirely different futures, a direct result of their newfound perspectives. Why you should see it: Do you ever doubt Clint?
INHALE
Who: Baltasar Kormakur directs. Diane Kruger. Dermot Mulroney. Sam Shepard. What: An emotional roller coaster reminding us of John Q as we follow a couple grasping at dangerous lengths to find a lung donor for their daughter. Why you should see it: Parental emotion mixed with modern day healthcare bitterness. That’s good film.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2
Who: Tod Williams directs. Katie Featherstone What: Ghosts and more creepy happenings with the sequel to the “real” haunts one couple experiences in their own lives. Why you should see it: There is no better way to get in the Halloween spirit.
OCTOBER 29
WELCOME TO THE RILEYS
Who: Jake Scott directs. James Gandolfini. Kristen Stewart. Melissa Leo. What: A lonely father mourning his daughter takes a business trip to New Orleans and ends up staying to rethink his life. He meets a runaway stripper who reminds him enough of his daughter to make him want to take care of her. It’s the story of a rebirth of a family, a struggle to accept a different (potentially better) life and the lessons learned when letting people love you again. Why you should see it: It’s the first time I have seen Stewart act. Plus, Gandolfini is brilliant.
MONSTERS
Who: Gareth Edwards directs. Whitney Able. Scoot McNairy. What: A space probe crashes in Central America during re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere. No one thinks anything of it until new life forms start to grow. Despite desperate attempts to control it, the new life evolves into giant creatures threatening to take over the continent. Why you should see it: It’s finally an alien movie without cartoonish creatures.
SAW 3D
Who: Kevin Greutert directs. Tobin Bell. Cary Elwes. Costas Mandylor. What: Jigsaw survivors seek refuge with each other, until they realize that the dark secrets of one may be just as terrifying as their memories. Why you should see it: (Do I need to keep saying it?) It’s the crazy mind games of Saw classics… but in 3D!
NOVEMBER 5
127 HOURS
Who: Danny Boyle directs. James Franco. Lizzy Caplan. Amber Tamblyn. What: It’s the true story of hiker Aron Ralston, trapped for days in a Utah canyon, forced to reevaluate his own strengths, both mentally and physically in order to survive. His life plays on rewind as he works to save himself, no matter the elements. Why you should see it: Franco is in his prime.
DUE DATE
Who: Todd Phillips directs. Zach Galifianakis. Robert Downey Jr. Michelle Monaghan. What: A stressed out and anxious new dad struggles across the country to make it in time for his child’s birth. Unfortunately, his riding partner has different priorities and a hysterically different attitude, making for an entertaining road trip like no other. Why you should see it: Galifianakis.
FAIR GAME
Who: Doug Liman directs. Naomi Watts. Sean Penn. Ty Burrell. Sam Shepard. What: A CIA agent’s identity is revealed after her husband publishes unfavorable evidence against the government. It’s a race against nuclear disaster for a woman who loses her credibility and confidants. She and her husband fight pending war alone while having to fight for their lives and their reputations. Why you should see it: Gender-role reversal makes this storyline refreshing and riveting, plus it was inspired by true events.
FOR COLORED GIRLS
Who: Tyler Perry directs. Janet Jackson. Anika Noni Rose. Whoopi Goldberg. Thandi Newton. Loretta Devine. What: Black females take the lead, telling their life stories in a riveting montage of African American perspective. Why you should see it: Although it’s a remake, Perry has a knack for doing things just differently enough to cause a greater stir.
MEGAMIND
Who: Tom McGrath directs. Will Ferrell. Tina Fey. What: Bored because he’s killed off everyone he used to fight, super-villain MegaMind finds himself in a position to be the hero for the first time ever as a new guy in town challenges his reputation. Why you should see it: Will Ferrell is just as funny in animation.
NOVEMBER 12
MORNING GLORY
Who: Roger Michell directs. Rachel McAdams. Harrison Ford. Diane Keaton. Patrick Wilson What: What looks like a promotion may end up being the kiss of death for one hotshot television producer, who is asked to ramp up a dusty morning show complete with arrogant anchors and big attitudes. Why you should see it: McAdams just may be the new Pfeiffer.
UNSTOPPABLE
Who: Tony Scott directs. Denzell Washington. Chris Pine. Rosario Dawson. What: A runtime consisting of intense highimpact suspense, it’s the story of a railway company’s battle to prevent a runaway train carrying sensitive explosives from crashing into (and destroying) the next city. Why you should see it: Everyone needs a good blockbuster after the Halloween horrors.
NOVEMBER 19
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS: PART 1
Who: David Yates directs. Daniel Radcliff. Emma Watson. Rupert Grint. What: A carefully crafted plan with no room for mistakes leaves the crew under severe pressure to carry out Dumbledore’s work. With Voldemort now over the Ministry of Magic, one wrong step could end their lives in a second. Why you should see it: It’s the last one. Well, part one of the last one.
MADE IN DAGENHAM
Who: Nigel Cole directs. Sally Hawkins. Bob Hoskins. Miranda Richardson What: A story based on the true events when sexual discrimination started to play a big role, specifically with the strike of 1968 at the Ford Dagenham plant. Why you should see it: Sally Hawkins has the attention of The Academy. Maybe she should have yours?
NOVEMBER 24
BURLESQUE
Who: Steven Antin directs. Cher. Christina Aguilera. Stanley Tucci. What: A small-town girl chases her dream to dance in Los Angeles, but finds herself fighting for even the chance to prove her talent. A shot at exposure opens her eyes to the world of burlesque, in a smokin’ club run by a former (and infamous) dancer. Why you should see it: Christina Aguilera sings and dances with Cher as her mentor. I am already squinting from the thoughts of glitter.
TANGLED
Who: Nathan Greno and Byron Howard direct. Mandy Moore. Zachary Levi. What: Disney’s version of the classic Rapunzel— this long-haired princess is not about to be taken for a damsel in distress, but she also can’t deny her some Disney love and makes her first trek into the outside world to follow the object of her affection.
Why you should see it: Something like this always comes out around Thanksgiving. And, it’s always good.
NOVEMBER 26
THE KING’S SPEECH
Who: Tom Hooper directs. Colin Firth. Geoffrey Rush. Helena Bonham Carter What: The story of an unlikely king, George VI fights his handicaps to become a strong and able leader for his country, leading them boldly into war. Why you should see it: Colin Firth, and Rush, for that matter, play period men so well.
LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS Who: Edward Zwick directs. Jake Gyllenhaal. Anne Hathaway. What: Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman,” two unlikely lovers, one free spirit and one romantic charmer, discover their match in each other over the chemistry they share despite any fancy new love drug. Why you should see it: Come on. It’s a movie inspired by Viagra.
DECEMBER 1
CONVICTION
Who: Tony Goldwyn directs. Hillary Swank. Sam Rockwell. What: A single, working mother pursues a law degree in an effort to save her brother, who is serving a life sentence in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. She struggles the entire way, proving bloodlines and love have no boundaries (or expiration date). Why you should see it: Even the trailer pulls at your heartstrings.
DECEMBER 3
I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS
Who: Glenn Ficarra and John Requa direct. Jim Carrey. Ewan McGregor. Elizabeth Mann. What: After a near-fatal accident, Steven Russell is forced to rethink his life. He realizes that his only shot at true happiness is to embrace life (and the fact that he is actually gay), living each day to the fullest. Unfortunately, his new acceptance tempts him beyond changing his partner—he winds up in jail, where he meets an inspiring new lover, one that continues to take him to the extremes of testing the law. Why you should see it: Jim Carrey playing an eclectic guy… when has this not worked?
DECEMBER 10
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER
Who: Michael Apted directs. Ben Barnes. Skandar Keynes. Georgie Henley. What: The royal siblings return for another fantastical journey via their bedroom furnishings. This time, they are sucked into a seascape painting, where they are asked to fight for their destiny aboard The Dawn Treader. Why you should see it: Part 3, in 3D.
THE FIGHTER
Who: David O. Russell directs. Mark Wahlberg. Christian Bale. Melissa Leo. Amy Adams. What: Wahlberg plays real-life boxer “Irish” Micky Ward in his early years, fighting just to pay the bills and working to keep his brother out of trouble. When he realizes what the industry puts him up against, things get serious. Trained
by his brother and backed by an entire town, he sets out to make a name for himself and chase a dream he never thought possible. Why you should see it: Marky Mark with mucho muscles. No, but really – this true story will rock you.
THE TOURIST
Who: Florence Henckel von Donnersmarck directs. Johnny Depp. Angelina Jolie. What: Innocent Frank travels to Italy to grieve an aching heart. By “chance” he meets a woman who sweeps him off his feet. They share what seems a lovely new friendship and vacation, until Frank slowly gets the impression they’re being watched and followed. One thing leads to another and all of a sudden Frank if part of a much larger plan…one he’s not sure he’s ready to be a part of. Why you should see it: Johnny Depp in the submissive role is quite fascinating.
DECEMBER 17
HOW DO YOU KNOW?
Who: James L. Brooks directs. Reese Witherspoon. Paul Rudd. Owen Wilson. Jack Nicholson. What: Sure that she has missed the boat on love, Lisa is caught up in an unexpected triangle. She’s left to choose between her present boyfriend of many flaws or a new guy, with what seems like all the right qualities. It’s a classic (and comical take on) case of comfort versus the risk for more. Why you should see it: It’s not in 3D, but it’s amongst a limited number of romantic comedies that aren’t retelling the same story over again.
YOGI BEAR
Who: Eric Brevig directs. Dan Aykroyd. Justin Timberlake. Anna Faris. Christine Taylor. What: All your favorite national park inhabitants are off on another adventure. This time, it’s against the backdrop of a documentary film, making the crew movie stars once again. Why you should see it: Because, “life’s a pic-a-nic.”
DECEMBER 22
GULLIVER’S TRAVELS
Who: Rob Letterman directs. Jack Black. Emily Blunt. Jason Segel. Amanda Peet. What: Writer Lemuel Gulliver heads to Bermuda for his latest assignment, but gets knocked off the map and ends up on the island of Liliput, a land of minute people with ridiculous power in numbers. And that is just the beginning… Why you should see it: It’s a classic story, now with one of our funniest comics at the helm.
LITTLE FOCKERS
Who: Paul Weitz directs. Ben Stiller. Owen Wilson. Robert DeNiro. What: The Fockers and the Byrnes are preparing for a new addition to the family. And as usual, mistrust and insecurity lead to some awkward interaction. Some suspicious drug handling and a reappearance from Pam’s old boyfriend put all the men on guard to defend, and remain in, the circle of trust. Why you should see it: Have the ones before this given you any reason not to?
DECEMBER 25
TRUE GRIT
Who: The Coen Brothers direct. Jeff Bridges. Matt Damon. Josh Brolin. What: A young girl hires the toughest US Marshal she can find to track down the man who killed her father. But it’s not that easy…She wants to come along, to ensure he is doing his job. Together, they encounter circumstances strong enough to test their faith in each other as well as themselves. Why you should see it: Anything by The Coen Brothers is worth seeing. PG 17 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2010

OCTOBER 5 – PRIMUS
The Tabernacle Original founding drummer Jay Lane, bassist Les Claypool, and guitarist Larry LaLonde reunite to form the freak magnet band that is Primus. Innovative in their diversity, the band embraces psychedelia, jazz fusion and metal to create an eclectic evening of musical unpredictability. The musicianship of these artists is clearly evident in a live setting, showcasing that LaLonde studied under the tutelage of Joe Satriani, while the strumming and slapping of Claypool proves him to be the best bassist this side of Geddy Lee. With such bizarre signature tunes as “Tommy The Cat”, “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver”, and “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”, you can expect an evening of musical oddities as distilled through a carnival sideshow.
OCTOBER 7 – SARA BAREILLES
Variety Playhouse Imagine Feist wrapped in a Fiona candy-Apple shell and you have the vulnerable and venerable Sara Bareilles. Critically praised for her songwriting, she “conveys vulnerability and wisdom in lyrics that speak honestly about relationships from a woman’s point of view”. With groove oriented piano playing she eschews the upper register of the piano in favor of creating a more groove-centric
melodic sound, currently touring in support of her latest album Kaleidoscope Heart. One of my particular favorites is her song Fairy Tale which features a quirky tongue in cheek examination of several fairy tales and the aftermath of each happily ever after. Though undeniably “for girls”, Sara Bareilles is a consomate performer and will surprise you with her ability to touch the hearts and minds of men and women alike with some playful jabs at the menfolk.
OCTOBER 15 – EAGLES
Piedmont Park Though they may be best known for “Hotel California”, listening to many radio stations across the bandwidth shows the Eagles to be one of the top producing band of all time. Original members Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmidt present the 1970’s musical experience traditionally attained through sex, drugs, and rock & roll or any combination thereof. Just don‘t forget the rock. Expect to hear hits such as “Life in the Fast Lane”, Lyin’ Eyes”, and “Desperado” as well as tracks from their solo albums, and their 2007 release, “Long Road Out of Eden”. Though you may be concerned that this band is past its prime, their ability to bring an evening full of perfect harmonies, searing guitar leads, and bass grooves combined with a driving rhythm is guaranteed to keep everybody up on their feet. Expect a night of classic rock by one of its top progenitors.
OCTOBER 16 – UNKNOWN HINSON
Variety Playhouse Just in time for the Halloween season, Unknown Hinson, the original rock-a-billy Dracula arrives on the scene and ready to make you bop your brylcreem pompadour to the music. Hinson aka Early Cuyler of Adult Swim’s The Squidbillies fame is a great crooner and a smokin’ guitar player. I have no doubt you’ll hear at least one Jimi Hendrix cover that will knock your bobby-socks off…as will the rest of his show. Bring your bushy side-burns and your plastic vampire teeth!
OCTOBER 27 – CARRIE UNDERWOOD
The Arena at Gwinnett Center Though initially rising to fame by winning American Idol, Carrie Underwood has outshone the initial sparkle of television fame and good looks to show undeniable talent. Her ability to touch the listener with her heartfelt lyrics and music has helped her rise successfully as a powerful presence in the country music world. Her album Some Hearts was the fastest selling solo debut album in country music history. The five-time Grammy winner has a down-home style that can easily immerse the audience in the words and stories of her songs. This current tour features a stage show that will keep your attention with slickly produced stage effects. Make no mistake though, the key element of this concert will no doubt be the emotional impact of her voice and songs including “Just a Dream”, “Cowboy Casanova”, and “Jesus Take the Wheel”.
OCTOBER 29 – MASSIVE ATTACK/ THIEVERY CORPORATION
Fox Theatre Though Massive Attack bitterly opposed the term Trip Hop, they were certainly among the progenitors of the genre. Probably best known for the moody cinematronic goth post-punk album Mezzanine, they are Tricky and Portishead combined; dark with dimension and multiple layers. You are likely to recognize the instrumental version of their song “Teardrop” as it is the theme
WE GOT NEXT THE DOLLYROTS
OCTOBER 30 – WEEZER
Chastain Park Amphitheatre You may know them particularly for their songs about Buddy Holly and unraveling sweaters. Some may question whether they still appeal to the indie crowd. Their latest album, Hurley, named after a character on Lost, brings them full circle back to their indie roots. They now showcase a raw energy and seem more than willing to tap into their back catalog of alt rock hits. Only the most curmudgeonly indie snob could take issue with such hits as “Hash Pipe” and the still popular “Say It Ain’t So”. Buddy Holly glasses and conservative sweaters of the fashion forward librarian required.
OCTOBER 31- JONSI
The Tabernacle Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi stepped out on his own earlier this year with his debut solo album, Go, which was arguably his most accessible work to date. Now the Icelandic singer is taking his distinctive blend of experimental post-rock, atmospheric ambient music and neo-classical arrangements out on the road, with state-of-theart set design, lighting and animation sure to provide an equally entrancing visual element. For fans of Sigur Rós’ unique brand of art-rock, it’s sure to be one of the year’s most mind-blowing shows.

Latest Project: Because I’m Awesome (Black Heart) For Fans of: Go Betty Go, The New York Dolls and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts Why You Should Care: Why You Should Care: Pop-punk rockers started out on Green Day’s first label, before label owner and legendary bad ass Joan Jett grabbed them for her own roster.

song for the hit TV series House M.D. DJ duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton create Thievery Corporation, the passionate kiss and copulation of world music and techno. The artfulness with which they blend the cultural divides of European, Latin, and African styles create a live performance that rises above a genre often pigeon-holed for pre-programmed and characterless music. An exciting evening of Trip Hop and techno dance music will surprise the listener with its engaging
EORGE W. BUSH HAS BEEN blamed for a lot that’s currently wrong with this country: a crappy economy, unwinnable wars, a sharply divided nation. But to be fair, he also deserves a little credit for helping inspire a slew of fantastic songs (check out just about any punk album made during his tenure in office) and in the case of The Dollyrots, the band owes their existence, in part, to the former Commander in Chief. The band, comprised of vocalist/bassist Kelly Ogden, drummer Chris Black and guitarist Luis Cabezas, has just released their third
full length, A Little Messed Up, on Blackheart Records, the label founded by Joan Jett. Ogden, on the eve of a European tour with Bowling for Soup, spoke about having Jett for a boss, knitting on the road and how W. brought the band together. So is it an urban legend or actually true that George W. Bush had a hand in the band becoming official? There is actually some truth in that. Luis (Cabezas, guitar) and I were in school at a hippie liberal arts college and had big grad school and med school plans - Luis even killed the MCAT. And then Bush Jr. was ‘elected’. We were in FL so it was pretty crazy for us. We figured the guy was going to ruin the world, or at least the U.S., so we decided to do what was most important to us... something we’d regret not doing if the world were to end. So, we moved to California and made The Dollyrots our life.
How did you guys end up joining Joan Jett’s label? We were on Warped Tour in 2006, the year she headlined, and had been working on what would be our second Lookout/Panic Button Records release. And then Lookout shut its doors; it had a bit to do with Green Day taking their catalogue elsewhere, and a bit to do with the label going in a different direction and not having much success. We knew Joan had her own label and we had always been huge fans so I walked up and gave her our CD. She had actually heard of us so that made the interaction a little easier. A few weeks later we got an e-mail from Blackheart (Records) saying they liked us and about 6 months later we released Because I’m Awesome with them. Since then, Joan’s been a constant source of inspiration and working alongside Blackheart has made us a better band. What can you tell me about this new record? I can tell you that it is more rock than last two, has more depth and we’ve gained more control over our instruments. We wrote and recorded 23 songs for it and only the top 13 made it. So there’s no filler. We grew up loving albums that you can listen to all the way through and have tried with all of our releases to put together albums that can be listened to from front to back, A side to B side. We really love all of A Little Messed Up. It took a lot more time than we had or wanted to put into
it but in the end we’re all really proud of how it turned out. So what’s the hardest thing about being the only female in the band? Do Luis and Chris ever get over-protective? It’s actually really easy. I’ve known Luis since we were in 8th grade and I’ve been touring with Chris (Black, drums) for about six years so they pretty much know when to watch out for me and when to give me my space. They’re easy guys to live with. I really do love them and it’s probably a more balanced situation than if we were all female or all boys. I can fight my own fights so when that happens they get out of the way! You guys got the chance to open up for the Buzzcocks earlier this year. What was that like? Any good stories from that tour? It was amazing! We grew up listening to, screaming along with and learning guitar to those songs. It was such a cool thing when they asked us to play; a complete honor and something we took to heart. The Buzzcocks are heroes of ours and have played with bands that are heroes of ours...Sex Pistols, Nirvana, etc. There were so many funny stories but the best involved our ritual of singing “More Than A Feeling” on their bus at the end of every night and ending the song by substituting the lyrics to “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. It was the ultimate punk rock karaoke. PG 19 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2010

Our Love to Admire. So I went back and listened to Interpol again to see if I missed something. I didn’t... but the band sure did. Sure, Interpol is derivative, aping Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen for a sound you’ve heard before, but damn if the band doesn’t fill albums with catchy hooks. What made Interpol was those thrilling moments in their songs– the arpeggios in PDA, the pop snare on Evil– that you find in no other postpunk revival band. But this self-titled effort is a long, sad dirge. The opening track, inaptly named “Success,” feels like it’s going to rise but never does, flowing into the five-minute “Memory Serves” (which I’d just as soon forget). “Lights,” the album’s first single, has some solid moments and perks up the album a bit, as does “Barricade” with its sing-along chorus and churning guitar. But then the aptly-named “Always Malaise (The Man I Am)” sends the album into a tailspin from which it never recovers. The final two tracks, “All of The Ways” and “The Undoing,” combine for 10 minutes of bland indulgence, bringing a painful end to an album totally lacking potential and might. I questioned bassist Carlos D’s decision when he left the band earlier this year, but maybe he had it right. If this is what Interpol has in mind going forward, it is time to move on. GRADE: C-
JM: Aside from having one of the best band names… well, ever, The Dandy Warhols also spent much of the ‘90s churning out great Velvet Undergroundi n s p i r e d psychedelic pop-rock that sounded like nothing any of their other contemporaries were recording at the time. The Capitol Years culls many of the best songs from the band’s four major label records, including “Not if You Were the Last Junkie On Earth,” “Bohemian Like You” and “Godless”. Though the band never became huge in the U.S. (despite moving more than two million records across the globe), the songs hold up remarkably well more than a decade later. The 14-song collection also includes a bonus track, “This is the Tide,” which was previously unreleased and written by The Dandy Warhols’ drummer and bass player. Though The Capitol Years likely won’t result in a whole new set of fans to discovering the band– let’s be honest, unless they’re in an iPod commercial or touring with Drake and Justin Bieber, kids don’t
BL: Athens has had its narrowly defined scenes over the past 30 years– the jangly college-rock of the R.E.M. years, the trippy psychedelia of the Elephant 6 era, the Southernfried jams of the Widespread Panic/Drive-By Truckers crowd– but Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor never really fit into the Athens scene’s sound. Perhaps that explains why Azure Ray has always seemed at home on Nebraska’s Saddle Creek label, where their blend of Americana, indie-folk and airy electronica fits like a glove. The duo disbanded after 2003’s Hold On Love to pursue solo careers, but Drawing Down The Moon suggests that their whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The intriguing album takes its time building up dynamic momentum, but by the time the ladies intertwine their harmonized vocals with swelling piano and strings on “On & On Again” you’ll be hooked, wrapped up in their gauzy haze of melancholy beauty. If there’s another act they could be compared to, it’s Liz Durrettt (a.k.a. niece of the late Vic Chestnutt), whose haunting compositions would make her a perfect opening act for Azure Ray. GRADE: B

BUN B – TRILL O.G. (Rap-a-Lot) Southern hip-hop the world needs to hear DW: It’s almost disrespectful that we even have to do this, but it seems in order. Mainstream America, meet Bun B. Bun B, the mainstream. The introduction seems necessary because Bun, a rap titan who’s had classic songs (“Pocket Full of Stones”), albums (Ridin’ Dirty) and moments (he and late UGK partner Pimp C helped Jay-Z go global with “Big Pimpin’”), is still treated like a second-class citizen in many parts. Hell, if it weren’t for Bun’s twangy way with words, we might not even have Rick Ross or Trick Daddy. Ugggh, damn this irks. That’s nothing against younger stars like Ross or Drake. In fact, Drizzy has long championed Bun as an innovator in the game. And on Trill O.G., B’s third solo project, Drake pays proper respect by ripping “Put It Down” and “It’s Been a Pleasure” to complete shreds. Don’t think for a sec though that Bun has to have the young buck
fourth album, Put Your Ghost To Rest, on their Procrastinate! Music Traitors label). Manchester Orchestra released his follow-up album, Brother’s Blood, last year on their Favorite Gentlemen label, and now the two acts have united to form Bad Blood. It’s an intriguing pairing, matching M.O. frontman Andy Hull’s passionate, straightfrom-the-gut emotionalism with Devine’s more thoughtful, introspective musings. Both Hull and Devine boast similar influences– Elliott Smith, Neutral Milk Hotel and Nirvana, to name a few– so their collaboration seems so perfectly natural you may wonder why it didn’t happen before. With each songwriter contributing half the songs, then fleshing them out together as a band, you’ll be surprised how cohesive it all sounds, creating a seamless union that should appeal to fans of both acts. MARK OLSON – MANY COLORED KITE (Ryko) Jayhawks frontman still sounds familiar on solo project JM: Listening to Many Colored Kite, Mark Olson’s second solo effort, chances are you’ll be disappointed if you were expecting a major departure from the alt-country sound he helped pioneer with influential ‘90s band The Jayhawks. But fans of his past work, including 2007’s Salvation Blues, are in luck. Olson churns out nearly a dozen beautifully-crafted acoustic tracks, with a few nods here and there to The Byrds and even his old band. Not every song is a standout, with some blending nearly seamlessly into the next, but there are a couple that put more effort into grabbing you on the first listen (most notably the title track). There are some strong choruses on the record, and impressive harmonies provided by guests like Jolie Holland (“Little Bird of Freedom”) and Vashti Bunyan (“No Time to Live Without Her”). Olson may not have broken any new ground on Many Colored Kite, but longtime fans likely won’t be disappointed. GRADE: B AZURE RAY – DRAWING DOWN THE MOON (Saddle Creek) Reunited and it feels so good

PROBLEM CHILD SHOOTIN’ FOR THE STARS Former Blue Collar Comedy Star Ron White Continues To Shine BY BRAD BINKLEY
R
ON WHITE EXPLODED ONTO THE national standup scene while showcasing his comedy style on the wildly popular Blue Collar Comedy Tour from 20002003. The cigar-smoking, scotch- drinking comedian also known as “Tater Salad” has since written a New York Times best seller, earned two Grammy nominations, and had three of the top rated one-hour specials in Comedy Central history. White descriptively tells stories based on real life experiences that not only cause guttural laughter from his audiences, but also captivates them emotionally. The no-nonsense, yet appreciative White is staying busier than ever these days. He appeared in a supporting role in Sex and the City 2. He has his own show in development with the USA Network, titled Driven. And he is bringing all new material to his latest tour, Behavioral Problems, which makes a stop at the Fox Theatre on October 8th and 9th. We were lucky enough to catch up with the hard working comedian via telephone recently.
BY B. LOVE

FTER SIGNING WITH ATLANTIC Records in 2006, it took four long years for the consummate perfectionist to finish his genre-smashing debut album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, during which time he was able to work with rap icons such as Eminem and T.I. (as well as other heavy hitters from the pop, R&B and rock worlds). Now that he’s gotten a taste of fame, what he really wants is to be the sort of household name that only comes from being a career artist. INsite sits down with B.o.B to discuss his current success and where he intends to go in the future.
How are things? I feel like a hundred pesos. About nine bucks. Tell me about the new tour, Behavioral Problems. Well, I never really stopped doing tours. Every once in a while my management company will re-name it. I don’t know why they do it. I almost do nothing off of behavioral problems. It’s all new stuff. Anytime I release something my next goal is to get it out on a show. I don’t like to do jokes, you know. Are you still going to open mics and working on material? Absolutely, especially when I’m in Los Angeles. You can go to five of them right there by where I live and knock them out. I still work really hard. There’s no shortcut to working the beats out on these jokes. You have to go through it yourself. What is your joke-writing process like? You know what, a thought will pop into my head in the middle of a conversation or the middle of the night or wherever. I’ve done 10,000 live shows over the last 24 years, so I know when something that works pops into my head. I never sit down and write because that creates dribble. Who were your comedic inspirations? Everybody. When I was a kid, I loved standup. We had an old Andy Griffith record, and it was probably the first thing I listened to. Great album. Then we had Bob Newhart and Flip Wilson. Later, there was Cheech and Chong and Steve Martin– who I just love– and George Carlin. It’s kind of funny because I understood at an early age that every single syllable made it work. It wasn’t just what was said, but how it was said and the order in which it was said. Did you ever get into any trouble at school doing that? I got in trouble at school no matter what I did. I had a learning disability. I have the attention span of a gnat. I was smart, but you can’t prove it on paper. No high school diploma, no big scholastic achievements. I do
An ATL Urban Music Underground Favorite for Years, B.o.B. Now Aims to Rock the World
have a GED and if you don’t know what GED stands for, you’ve probably got one too. When did you start doing comedy? I started when I was 29. I’m 53, so I’m not getting any younger. Doing standup you can’t start too late, because you have all these life experiences to draw from. I think you can start too early. When I was 29, and I had no idea. What was it like for you at the beginning? When I walked in to do my first set ever, I went straight to the bar and I ordered a Budweiser and a shot of Cuervo. In those days I would get in my piece of crap Nissan truck and drive to Atlanta or wherever from Dallas. I’d make about 200 bucks. But I was having so much goddamn fun, I didn’t care. I just felt like I retired and got to do what I loved, and I’ve loved it for 24 years. I never expected this to happen, but it did. How did you get connected with the BlueCollar gang? I was already connected with Jeff. He was also at my first show. Whenever he got big enough to take somebody with him, he took me with him, which was an amazingly gracious thing for him to do. Jeff and I always saw comedy in a different way. Whenever Jeff looked at the comedy vehicle in America, he saw a way to bring his comedy to a million people and build a very secure life for himself and his family. I saw a way to get free beer. I thought that If I play my cards right, I can be drunk off my ass every single night. And we were both right. I got drunk and he got to build a secure life for his family. Do you live in L.A or Atlanta? I live in Atlanta most of the year. My favorite thing about Atlanta is the food. Atlanta has the best steakhouses in America, I don’t care what anybody says, with Chops and Bones and New York Prime, and the BBQ is off the charts good. I just love the food there. It’s a wonderful, wonderful city.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT ATLANTA IS THE FOOD... ATLANTA HAS THE BEST STEAKHOUSES IN AMERICA...IT’S A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL CITY.
You grew up during a time when the Atlanta hip-hop scene was really starting to explode. Yeah, from OutKast and Goodie Mob to crunk music like Trillville and Lil’ Jon, to T.I., Ludacris and Bonecrusher, it was just a good window where there was always something buzzing in Atlanta that people were excited about. It was inspiring because it wasn’t like the Atlanta artists were catering to the mainstream sound. The Atlanta sound went worldwide. Who were the artists who initially influenced you to start rapping? I would definitely have to say Eminem, DMX and Nas. DMX was the first rapper that I studied: He made me write out my lyrics and figure out which words would rhyme. I learned some basic music theory because I started playing trumpet when I was 6, so I could figure out time signatures. But the Atlanta scene influenced me a lot just because I grew up in it. You rap, sing, produce, write your own music and play multiple instruments. You don’t see a lot of people in hip-hop who can do all that, so why was it important for you to develop such a diverse skill set? I get bored easily and I’m continually inspired. I don’t ever feel like I’ve reached the pinnacle of where I want to be. I always see something new I want to soak up and respond to. There are never enough hours in the day! [Laughs]
the guys who inspired you to pick up a mic in the first place? I was telling myself, “This is crazy!” For me, it was about being able to hang around him for a while and getting to see the type of person he really is. When I was a kid I could relate to him because of his life story, but now that I’m in the music industry I can also relate to him as an artist. I haven’t been in the game anywhere near as long as he has, but I think I have an idea of where he’s been. What would you say to those 13-year-old kids who might read this story and listen to your music with the same joy of discovery you had when you listened to Eminem and DMX eight years ago? I’d tell them, I am you. I’d tell them that this is the most challenging time ever to be an artist, but those challenging times are necessary to prepare you for what will be asked of you if you become an artist. Everything you’re going through is preparation for what’s to come.
Do you believe that adversity is necessary to achieve success? Absolutely. How can you be successful if there’s not an obstacle to overcome? You’ve already had several Top 10 singles, gotten to work with some of your hip-hop heroes, and had a successful debut album on both a critical and commercial level. That’s a lot for a 21-year-old. What are your primary career goals as you move forward? I guess I’m really hard on myself, so there’s always that little voice in the back of my head saying. “Keep going! Keep going!” If days were made up of 34 hours, I would still not have enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do. I always look in the mirror and think, “Come on, you KNOW you can do better!” But creatively I want to keep writing music, keep performing and to keep growing, regardless of whether I have a hit single or album out. I want to be a career artist.
People have been talking about you in the ATL underground scene for years, and you signed with Atlantic Records four years ago. What took you so long to get the debut album out? I think it was because of the fact that I spent so much time working on the album that it came out the way it did. So it wasn’t like, “OK, we’ve got a hot single: Let’s hurry up and get the album finished so we can keep the momentum going!” The album has been done, so I can only keep getting better as I create new songs. What was it like landing Eminem to appear on “Airplanes,” considering he was one of

ELECTRIC SIX SEES THE SIGNS, BABY The Detroit sextet is back, rocking the Capricorns with its seventh album BY ED MORALES
O
F ALL THE WAYS TO DESCRIBE Electric Six – disco, punk, new wave, dance, metal, novelty, alternative – there’s one word everyone can agree on: prolific. A six-man outfit (appropriate) from Detroit, Electric Six has pumped out seven albums since its breakthrough debut Fire in 2003, leaving a case full of catchy songs and hilarious lyrics in its wake. Dick Valentine (aka Tyler Spencer) is the band’s lead singer and primary songwriter, and despite being the sole remaining member since those Fire days, finds E6 in a good place. With the September release of Zodiac and a worldwide tour which brings the band through Atlanta this month, INsite sits down with the lead singer as he gets us up to speed. I was looking online the other day and I saw these YouTube videos for songs from the new album, and I know you said you weren’t going to do videos anymore. Do you ever see those videos other people do for your songs? All the time. We have a lot of free time on the road, and between the six of us someone always finds something. It’s stupid to pretend that you don’t Google yourself, of course you Google yourself. Some of them are good and some of them are bad, you just try to act like a neutral third party. We’re Libertarian when it comes to YouTube we just let the free market dictate what’s going to be up there and we don’t throw out opinions or comments. Have you seen the one for “Rubberband Man”? Where the guy took the old footage of Spin-
ners? It’s cause we stayed true to the original tempo of the song and the original feel of the song. It was well done, I love the way those guys in the Spinners look.
You said that was one of the catchiest songs you’ve ever heard and one you wanted to cover. Why that song? The mud wrestling scene in Stripes when John Candy says he’s a mean, lean fighting machine, that’s the song in the background and I remember it being so catchy. Your new album is called Zodiac, it has 12 songs on it, is that a coincidence? That is not a coincidence. That was an idea to keep the amount of songs on the album down to a minimum so we wouldn’t have to mix or match more songs. We usually record 17 or 18 songs and sometimes you say “let’s put 16 songs on the record” but that leaves to more work. But if you name the record Zodiac, you know you just have to have 12 songs. It make it a bit easier for everyone.
cause we certainly don’t want to get pigeon-holed as one of those murder bands
You’ve said you write songs about nothing. How do you write a song about nothing? It’s very easy. You just clear your mind. It’s like swimming laps in a pool as long as you don’t realize that you’re running out of oxygen you’re able to stay focused on getting to the end of the pool, it’s like that with songs. As long as you realize that you have a limited amount of oxygen you’ll be fine. So if you stumble across a song and you realize, “I’m writing a song about something,” do you stop and, I guess, breathe?
Maybe I’m just a bit macabre, cause your previous album is KILL and this one’s called Zodiac. I thought you were going for a serial killer vibe. No, it’s all coincidence. I thought about on the album having the first words on every song lead to a secret message, but really once we’re done touring for an album we don’t think about it or its effect on future albums ever again. So the next album will not be called Ted Bundy? KILL, Zodiac, Ted Bundy – no, but I think now that you mention it maybe consciously we’ll call it Bright and Happy, maybe that’s the way to go,
I do, as a matter of fact. I intentionally try not to write about a person I ever met. I try to make the lyrics as abstract and not be about anything because I’m well immersed in my real life and I don’t need anymore reminders about any portion of that. I’m very happy with experiencing my real life outside of the dream world. So your albums are like versions of Seinfeld? Exactly. I think you have something there, because Seinfeld was tremendously popular. (Laughs) Right now we’re entering our Michael Richards phase.

Eight Years In, Street Dogs Release The Finest Album of Their Careers BY JOHN B. MOORE
S
TREET DOGS FRONTMAN MIKE MCCOLGAN shocked many in the world of punk rock when he walked away from the Dropkick Murphys in 1998, just as the band was catching on with a national audience. The fact that McColgan walked away from being a rock star to put his life on the line as a member of the Boston Fire Department was an even bigger shock. But a dream is a dream. A few years into his gig as a Jake (look it up kids) for the BFD, the punk rock muse came calling again. He put together a part time band, the Street Dogs, for a few weekend gigs and an outlet for creativity. Those gigs led to more shows and eventually an offer to put out a record. A call to join fellow Celtic punks Flogging Molly on the road forced McColgan to face a question of conscience he’d been having lately: did he want to be an old man sitting on his porch wondering what would have happened if he actually took that second chance at being a full time rock star? Eight years and five albums later, the question will never come
up, as McColgan and the rest of his band are back with their latest effort. Clocking in with 18 tracks, the self-titled record is the paramount of all the band has strived for, and arguably their best record. It manages to be both poignant and fun, with driving guitars and punk rock anthems. Preparing to hit the road for much of the rest of the year, McColgan spoke recently about the new record, leaving behind the fire department to become a road dog and how he and the guys in the Dropkick Murphys are still friends regardless of what people want to believe.
Yeah, growing up and even now on the weekends, sometimes you just want to let loose and have a good time and go to a show and maybe have a few drinks and just unwind. Society is so stressful these days and so much demand is put on young kids with school and work and they’re walking around with a bleak economic situation. Punk rock, for me, saved my life on many occasion and in many different ways and I feel for kids to come see our shows, they can lock on to a song like that and say “yeah, I can be with my friends, go to a show, let loose and have some fun.”
After five albums, why did you decide to self-title this one? Well, we all felt like it was the best album we’ve ever done. And that’s not us saying the other ones don’t past muster– we believe in those records– but the new record is just on every level superior to the other ones and we feel like we hit our stride.
One thing I’ve been wondering about for years: You left Dropkick Murphys to become a firefighter and eventually started Street Dogs while you were still working for the fire department. Did you know that this band would eventually be a full time thing again? No way. I had no clue (Street Dogs) would be a full time thing. When me and Johnny were initially writing songs and jamming with Rob (Guidotto, former guitarist) and Jeff (Erna, former drummer)it was just to have fun and play shows locally and deal with that creative part of you that wants to write and wants to play. What happened is that offers started to come in for albums and shows and things like that and we said, “Let’s just do this record for this little record company that says they’re a record company.” We did that wrong for sure. With all do deference to them, they’re probably good people, but in hindsight we probably should have waited a little bit longer and taken in all of our available options, but we made a record, we played a big show in Boston that sold out and then Flogging Molly asked us to go out on the road. We were at a point where we had to either fold or go forward. I didn’t want to be on a porch when I was 65 years-old saying “I had another shot and I blew it.” I remember me and John were in Connecticut and it was snowing and we had just gotten back from playing, we were outside having a coffee at 3 a.m. and we just said “let’s do it” and never looked back.
The song “Punk Rock and Roll,” off the new album, is probably one of the most fun songs you guys have ever recorded.

FILM
KEIRA KNIGHTLEY On Paparazzi, Period Pieces, Pirates & the Present BY B. LOVE
B
ORN IN SOUTH LONDON TO an actor father (Will Knightley) and a playwright mother (Sharman Macdonald, who wrote the screenplay for her daughter’s 2008 film, The Edge Of Love), Keira Knightley began acting at the age of nine. By the time she’d turned 18 she was a worldwide star thanks to the one-two punch of the indie sleeper Bend It Like Beckham and her role as Elizabeth Swann in the bigbudget blockbuster Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl. It was an approach that came to define her career over the next few years, as the comely Brit veered between small, prestigious period pieces (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, The Duchess) and over-the-top major studio fare (King Arthur, Domino, the POTC sequels). But somewhere along the way, as the tabloid media became increasingly intrusive into her personal life, the big-budget films stalled at the box office, and her 3-picture Pirates deal came to an end, Knightley seemingly grew tired of Hollywood life. It’s been over two years since her last film was released, but now Knightley is back with a trio of new projects that should put her back in the spotlight. The most eagerly anticipated of the three is this month’s Never Let Me Go, director Mark Romanek’s longawaited follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut, One Hour Photo. The film (which was adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel
by 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland) tells the haunting story of three young adults who spent their childhoods at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school for special students, and who must now confront the reality of their own existence. It’s a very different sort of role for Knightley, who seems immensely excited by the opportunity to challenge herself. We recently spoke with the 25-year-old actress about becoming famous at an early age, her penchant for period pieces and whether there might be another Pirates-level blockbuster in her future.
What was it like growing up in a show business family, and how did that affect your decision to become an actress? “Show business” is not particularly a word that I like. I lived with a playwright and an actor, and I think it was amazing. I definitely grew up around stories, art and people that really believed they could make a difference through their art form, which is a very exciting thing to see as a child. I’ve never grown up with anything else, so I don’t know what it’s like to grow up with other parents. But I’m very close to mine. You’ve been in the eye of the tabloid media since you were a teenager. What was it like having to deal with that rabid attention so early in your career? Without complaining about it, it’s hugely invasive and uncomfortable. I don’t read any

magazines or newspapers anymore, because I found it really scary when I was followed by photographers. It was like a scene from The Birds: At first there were three, there were eight, then there were ten, then there were millions of them, and it was like, “Oh my God!” I have, on many occasions, broken down in tears because I find it terrifying and I don’t know why. In recent years you seem to have avoided mainstream films in favor of period pieces. Are you especially drawn to those sorts of films, or is it just circumstance? It simply has been that the stories that have interested me most have been set in the past. I’m not going to read an amazing piece set 200 years ago and go, “Oh, I can’t do that because I’ll be in another period piece.” That would be cutting my nose off to spite your face. I’m very selfish about my film choices. I’m in an incredibly lucky position where I can choose what I do, and it has to be something that interests me or else I won’t be interesting in it. There’s been no career plan. Are you at the point at where you want to try to do something more modern? No. I do love period films, personally. I love the fact that you can escape into a completely different reality. What I love about film is that it’s complete escapism. And I find that seeing these costumes, these weird societies, helps me to forget my life and just dive into the story. So I think that’s why, as an actress, I like being in them. It’s a way into a fantastic fantasy world. Do you have to adjust your process on smaller, more intimate movies as opposed to a big-budget studio blockbuster like Pirates Of The Caribbean? You adjust your speed. You have less time to do things, which I like, actually. You do something like Pirates, which is obviously technical– it’s about explosions and action, and that, as everybody will tell you, takes a long time to get right. When you’re doing something like Atonement, you have less
time to do it and you have less money, so you have to do it quicker. It’s a much more intense working experience, which I think is what you’re looking for as an actor because you want to be living in that moment. It’s about the excitement of finding those emotions. What kinds of challenges do you face in finding good characters to sink your teeth into? I think actually doing a contemporary piece is a challenge. I think what I love is escaping into characters. Like I said, I’m not looking for a form of self-expression, and I’m not looking for autobiographical material. I feel much more comfortable and able to relax into a character if they’re as far away from me as possible. So I suppose the closer a character comes to me, the more challenging I think I’d find it. Doing something contemporary and something that’s quite close to me is actually quite difficult. You’ve had a bit of a hiatus from the bigbudget Hollywood studio machine. Can you see yourself going back into that at some point? Yeah, of course. I hope so, if there’s something that interests me. It would be very savvy of me, business wise, to go, “Yes, I’m going to do this, and then I’m going to do a big one.” But I can’t think like that. It has to be what interests me at the time. I think there is a brilliant place in the world for entertainment just for entertainment’s sake. I think it’s completely wonderful to go to the cinema and see a complete ride and enjoy your popcorn and have a great time. Sometime, when I’m in the mood, I will find a script and that’s exactly what I’ll do. I think it is partly because the Pirates Of The Caribbean films did take such a long time, and I was within that world for such a long time, that I’ve craved something that’s different. For me, the point of acting has been to change as much as possible, and I’ve been very fortunate to be able to do that. So hopefully I’ll find something fun and ridiculous and explosive, and I’ll enjoy doing it. I just haven’t found it yet…

ITH THE ACQUISITIONS OF wide receivers Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh over the offseason, the run-happy Baltimore Ravens were supposed to finally have the passing pieces to balance an offense that would drive NFL opposition nuts. However the early part of the season hasn’t played out as expected. The Ravens are averaged just 221 yards in the air in their first three games. If 25-year-old QB Joe Flacco is bothered by the numbers, he isn’t leading on. Flacco, the 2008 NFL Rookie of the Year, sat down with INsite to talk about making it to the big game and overcoming the doubters who said a University of Delaware alum would never make it. Joe, how are you feeling about the Ravens’ postseason chances this year? We acquired a few guys in the offseason and we did well in the draft. I feel good about where we are. It’s just about working hard and playing the way we’re supposed to. I feel great about [Boldin joining the team]. Obviously, he’s going to help me out directly. He’s going to be able to get open on the outside and create better match-ups for other receivers on our team.. I think he’s going to help everybody out in the locker room. I think [fans] should be excited about getting him. I know I am. You became a starting NFL QB after starring for the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens. Would your road have been smoother had you gone to a bigger school? Really, I don’t think it matters. There are good players from everywhere. As long as you go out there and play well on Friday

When it’s all said and done, would you rather have a Super Bowl ring or Hall of Fame enshrinement? A Super Bowl ring. That’s the one, hopefully, will come in the near future. That’s what makes a hall of fame quarterback. There are hall of fame quarterbacks that haven’t won Super Bowl rings, but I think when you win Super Bowl rings, you up your chances of being a Hall of Fame quarterback. It goes hand in hand. That’s what everyone plays for at the NFL level, the MLB level or NBA. That’s what everybody plays for. I don’t want to win one. I want to win two, three, four, as many as possible. That’s what we’re trying to do in Baltimore and I think we’re heading in the right direction.

nights and Saturdays, somebody’s gonna look at you. Somebody’s gonna find you. Somebody’s gonna give you a shot to play. You just got to continue to work hard and don’t give up. I went to a small school, but I still had dreams of playing in the NFL. I didn’t go to a small school and say, “I’m not going to play. I’m just going to have a good time for a couple of years.” I went there to become an NFL player. I worked hard at it and somebody came up and snatched me. I was fortunate for it. I believe that’s because of the outlook I had on things. I found out that at the I-AA level there are a ton of good players. I played with a lot of guys that just got overlooked at high school. Maybe they weren’t developed yet. They weren’t mature enough to be that standout player in high school, but in college, they became a big guy. All you have to do is continue to work hard. In the NFL, they have a long process of recruiting guys. If you play the way you think you can and play to your abilities, you’ll be fine.

FANATIC A Monthly Sports Wrap-up BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS A few early NFL observations: 1) Though the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs still haven’t convinced the masses, a winning Oct (including consecutive games vs. Jacksonville, Buffalo and Oakland) just might; 2) Of the 0-3 teams, we still haven’t given up hope on the 49ers making the postseason; 3) As amazing as it sounds, the Eagles’ Michael Vick has to be the early MVP favorite; 4) Brett Favre, who already has six picks, didn’t reach that number last year until Week 14; 5) The defensive-minded Baltimore Ravens give up just 244 yards per game, or about 200 less than the Washington Redskins. “Players revel in these moments. They are personal, even as they are witnessed by media and fans. They validate the work put in since February. Champagne corks aren’t the only pressure releases. The Big 162, as Reds third baseman Scott Rolen calls the regular season, is a six-month ride in the pressure machine. Fans should take a minute to revel themselves. And to appreciate the fine rarity of the moment. In ’95, the last Reds’ playoff team won 85 games in the poststrike, 144-game season… Things change, fortunes ebb and flow. The good times rarely last for organizations with thin wallets. Their glory is brief, as sustainable as a beautiful sunset. It’s so hard for a small-money team to make it otherwise. Live the moment, Reds fan.” –CINCINNATI ENQUIRER’S PAUL DAUGHERTY, after the Reds won the NL Central title “If you move three feet to the left in the pocket, or three feet to the right, you still want, in his case, your right shoulder in the same position, your knees bent the right
way, and you want to be able to step into the throw, and so on. He’s worked very hard on that, all the way from the feet to the arms and the shoulders. And what that does is that increases your accuracy and consistency.” –PHILADELPHIA EAGLES HEAD COACH ANDY REID, on Michael Vick throwing six TDs and no interceptions through Week 3 Fanatic knows it’s only October, but these five important contests will go an awful long way to deciding the two teams that’ll compete for the NATIONAL TITLE in January: 1) Ohio State at Wisconsin, Oct 16; 2) Alabama at South Carolina, Oct 9; 3) LSU at Auburn, Oct 23; 4) Oregon at USC, Oct 30; 5) Texas at Nebraska, Oct 16. “It was his responsibility, and he knew it. He knew he was going to have to buy dinner one way or the other. He was either going to have to buy dinner or wash a lot of dishes.” –DAVID WELLS, FRIEND OF COWBOYS ROOKIE DEZ BRYANT, who treated his entire team to a $55,000 steak dinner in late September AND FINALLY… By cutting baseball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s rugby, the University of California hopes to save $4 million… Jay Bruce’s walk-off homer on September 28 for the Reds was the first pennantclinching dinger in the Majors since 2004… The Miami Heat have sold 30% more merchandise since LeBron’s “Decision” that they did in the 30 days after winning an NBA title four years ago… The Angels’ Brandon Wood was batting a miserable .147 through 224 at-bats, technically making him the worst regular MLB hitter since 1968.
Must-See TV York and Philly weren’t on the biggest stage.
2. Though ALCSthe(Oct. 15-23, TBA, TBS) Twins and Rangers have equal parts pop and pitching, we see an AL East reunion between the Yanks and Rays in the picture.
3. AtNLCS (Oct. 16-24, TBA, Fox) press time, only the Reds and Phillies were officially in. Doesn’t much matter either way, what with Philly hitting and hurling like it is now.
4. I’llAtlanta at Philadelphia (Oct. 17, 1PM, Fox) be damned. If it isn’t the NFL’s biggest headline (Vick) going against the team he formally made front-page news with.
