JANE’S JOURNEY
The Legendary Jane Goodall On Chimps, Feminism & Saving The Planet by brET loVE
o
n September 27, Jane Goodall will launch the new documentary film Jane’s Journey with a remarkable one-night-only event designed to give people around the world a rare opportunity to ask questions of the legendary primatologist, wildlife advocate and environmental conservationist. With special guest appearances from pop culture icons like angelina Jolie and dave matthews, the event (which will be broadcast live via satellite from los angeles) will draw further attention to Goodall’s massively influential work, which has changed not only what we understand about the connections between humans and primates, but also how people view our place and responsibility within the natural world. In anticipation of the event, we were granted a rare opportunity to speak with Goodall (now 77) about her groundbreaking work in the ‘60s, the mission of the Jane Goodall Institute and its roots & Shoots program, and how we as individuals can do our part in preserving our precious planet. Have you noticed any evolution in the way in which people talk about the relationship between humans and animals? Since I began in 1960, there has definitely been a change. When I first began studying chimpanzees it was not appropriate, especially if you were a scientist, to talk about chimpanzees having personalities or emotions. You couldn’t talk about animals having a mind capable of any kind of thought, because those were unique to us. I shouldn’t have given the
chimpanzees names: They should have had numbers. That attitude is much, much softer now. It still hangs on in certain places, usually where people do rather unpleasant things to animals. They seem to prefer to consider that the animals don’t have feelings. So there has been a change in understanding, but not often enough does it lead to a change in behavior.
There was initially a lot of controversy over your findings, particularly glorifying the chimps and associating emotions with them. Can you talk about what role gender played in your research? I think if I had been male, I wouldn’t have been pushing these anthropomorphic ideas. I was told I shouldn’t have given the chimps names, that it is more scientific to number them, and that you shouldn’t talk about their personalities, their minds, or their feelings because those are attributes of our own species. Fortunately, I was able to think back to the wonderful teacher I had as a child who taught me that animals do have personalities, minds, and feelings, and that was my dog rusty. I had the courage of my convictions, and learned how to write in such a way as not to be open to intense criticism from my peers. In fact, I think my gender helped me. When I began, feminism wasn’t really a concept. Going out into the field as a woman, there wasn’t that urgency most young men felt back then to be the breadwinner. I wasn’t interested in academia. I didn’t want tenure in a university. I wanted to get my phd because that was the only way I’d get my own [research] money. In africa, it was a benefit to be a woman because, in 1961, with their newly acquired independence, the tanzanians were not very at

When I first wanted to go to africa, everybody laughed at me: We didn’t have any money, World War II was raging and africa was “the dark Continent,” but most importantly I was a girl. “Jane, get real: Girls don’t do this kind of thing, living with animals in the forest.” but my mother was a very strong woman, and she used to say, “If you really want something and you work hard, take advantage of opportunity and never give up, you will find a way.” That’s the message I’ve taken to children, particularly girls, all around the world. How do we get more young people interested in the sciences, particularly animal sciences? I have to be self-serving here and say let’s get them interested in our roots and Shoots program. I’ve seen the effect it has on children in helping them to move forward in conservation, meeting other young people who are passionate, and realizing that science doesn’t have to be cold and objective. It can be very exciting and lead to new ways of interacting with the environment, animals and each other, too. The roots and Shoots program is in 126 countries, with children coming together (especially on the Internet) and discussing all that they do. It’s handson, roll up your sleeves, get out there, choose a program and take action knowing that every single day you can make a difference. In the next 20 years, what do you see making the biggest difference for chimps in areas where they are coming into conflict with people in Africa? this is a situation in which the Jane Goodall Institute has been extremely involved. I flew over Gombe national park in the early ‘90s and was shocked to see that, outside the boundaries of this tiny park, the deforestation left totally bare hills. there were more people living there than the land could support, and they were cutting down the last trees to grow crops, to raise goats, or for charcoal. How could we even try to save the chimpanzees while the people were struggling to survive? that led to our taCare (take Care) program, which is a holistic effort to help people improve their lives with new farming methods, protecting the watershed, scholarships to keep girls in school, better healthcare. We’re especially working with women because, all around the world, as women’s education improves, family size drops. after about seven years of this program, the villagers set aside land for conservation as a buffer all around Gombe national park. It’s been so successful that we are now replicating this in different parts of africa around other wilderness areas, to have people become partners in conservation. What are the most valuable lessons that humans can learn from chimpanzees and other primates? There are various lessons. one lesson the chimpanzees
in particular have taught us is that we are definitely part of the animal kingdom. The similarities– the fact that we differ genetically by just over 1%, the blood and immune system are almost the same, the anatomy of the brain... Hopefully some people, eventually, will change the way we deal with animals. more specifically, I learned the tremendous importance of early experience in the life of a chimpanzee. Good mothers, bad mothers, traumatic experiences in the first few years, it really does make a difference in adult behavior. of course, child psychiatrists/psychologists today are emphasizing that this is true for human infants. but it’s easier to trace the affect of trauma in early life in a chimpanzee, because it doesn’t try to conceal his or her feelings, than it is for a human that tries to behave in an accepted way. What do you see as the biggest global challenges to wildlife conservation? overall, it’s the human population growth that is an underlying threat to wildlife conservation. The effect of our reckless burning of fossil fuel and heavy meat-eating, which leads to methane production and destruction of forests in order to provide grazing lands or grow grain, and a waste of water. This is having a tremendous impact, with climate change and global warming. The numbers of tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and drought is definitely affecting wildlife all around the world today. There is abject poverty, and if you’re really poor you’ll destroy the last little bits of the environment to grow food or exploit those resources in order to make money to raise your family. Then there’s the unsustainable lifestyle the rest of us have: most of us have way more than we need, and very often more than we even want. What can we as average citizens do in our everyday lives to confront these issues, especially when so much of it seems tied up in political wrangling? We have to start off with ourselves. each of us makes an impact on this world every single day, and we can choose. We can think about the consequences of what we eat, what we wear, where it comes from, did it involve child slave labor, how far has it come… all these kinds of questions. When it comes to addressing the politics, that’s going to differ enormously. people tend to point fingers: It’s the fault of the politicians, or the scientists, or big business. let’s see where we as individuals fit into this. do we lobby our politicians sufficiently when they do things we don’t like? more importantly, do we thank them and support them when they make tough decisions on behalf of the environment, or do we decide that’s hurting my lifestyle so I’m not going to support that person anymore? We criticize corporations for being environmentally destructive, but as long as we’re buying their products we have no leg to stand on. We have to realize that each one of us does have a responsibility in our own lives.

FILM
BEATING THE ODDS
With 50/50, Buddies Will Reiser and Seth Rogen Deliver A Cancer Comedy With Heart By MarcI MILLer
W
hen you think of Seth Rogen (knocked up, Superbad, Pineapple express), “warm heart” is probably not the first characteristic you’d think of to describe his comedy. But in many ways it has been there all along, and it’s on full display in his latest film, 50/50. Directed by Jonathan Levine (the criminally under-appreciated the Wackness), the film is based on the true story of Rogen’s buddy Will Reiser, who learned at age 27 that he had a rare form of cancer that left with him with a mere 50% chance of survival. Reiser’s script doesn’t wallow in mawkish morbidity, instead focusing on the bromantic friendship between Adam (the always-excellent Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and kyle (Rogen) that helped him get through the harrowing ordeal. We recently had the opportunity to get some face time with Rogen and Reiser to discuss their real-life friendship, how closely the film mirrors Reiser’s experience with fighting terminal cancer, and how Joseph Gordon-Levitt saved the film. What made you want to do this movie? WR: We realized there was no movie that accurately portrayed what it was like to be young and go through something like this. Most cancer movies are really over-dramatic, they are not realistic, the character is a curmudgeon or misanthrope who has some big epiphany at the end and then dies. that’s a hollywood cancer movie. SR: As much as we wish that was Will’s real story. At what point where you comfortable taking this experience on as a script? WR: When i was sick we discussed the idea of a cancer movie. A comedy that felt real and true to the experience. But i didn’t start actually outlining an idea for the movie until about a year later. Seth and evan Goldberg urged me to write about it and i handed them the first draft and even then they had to push me to go a little bit further into the process of fleshing out some of the more dramatic stuff. The first draft was a little bit more comedic, i was just trying to figure out the tone. But with the process of writing it i was able to get it all out. And actually had the same diagnosis that you did in real life?
All BETs ArE On!
WR: Very similar. i had a massive tumor. the MRis in the movie are my real MRis… and a lot of what the doctor says, the diagnostic stuff, the surgery… that’s all from my reports.
Did you really have a doctor as awful as the one portrayed in the film? WR: During that experience i had many doctors, some of whom did not have the greatest bedside manner. But i kind of found that the bigger the dick, the better the doctor. So, i i had some doctors who were really nice and really personable and they made me feel comfortable and i had some that made me feel like i was a car, like i was going in for a tune-up or something. it sucks…its totally alienating and de-humanizing for sure. The film did such a good portraying just how lonely a cancer patient can feel. Did you find that to be the case for yourself, and how did your friends help you? WR: i was lonely. i would say that i was 25 and i had no clue how to express my feelings whatsoever. And the only way i was able to cope with the ordeal was by making jokes. We would joke about it. i did spend a lot of time by myself…because i didn’t want people to see how worried and concerned i was. i was quite scared but i had no idea how to talk about it. So when i was out with friends i wanted the situation to feel as normal as possible. So i never told Seth “this is really scary” or “i’m having a really hard time.” SR: We assumed that was the case, we didn’t need to hear him say that. But we didn’t ask him either. We never sat him down and said let’s talk about it. WR: it’s weird. i had one friend and he was like, “Dude, what do you need? Do you need to go for a walk? Are you okay?” he was so freaked out, i had to make him feel as comfortable as possible. i just made fun of the situation. What made you select Angelica Huston to play your mother? WR: She was an actress that director Jonathan Levine and i both really thought would be great. She really loved the script. So it seemed like a perfect fit, so we offered her the role and she accepted right away. What happened with James McAvoy who was originally scheduled to play the role of Adam?

I do weLL wIth More InForMatIon, not Less InForMatIon. and It was a pretty reLaxed set. It was pretty MeLLow. SR: he was in king of Scotland when we were writing the movie and we thought he would be a cool guy to work with. We worked on it with him for a while and then he had to leave for a very understandable emergency. So we were left in a position where we literally had to find a new actor in like a day or else the whole movie would have been cancelled. So i called Joe and explained very honestly the situation we were in. And he was nice enough to read the script immediately and then he got on a plane and flew to Vancouver and got real drunk with us for a night and he agreed to do the movie the next day. We started filming a week later. Bryce Dallas Howard just came off playing evil Hilly Holbrook in The Help and now plays the awful girlfriend in this film…why does she always take these roles? WR: i do feel like we need to find a part for her to counteract that. SR: i’m writing a “Mother theresa” movie for her. WR: Bryce is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet…she’s incredibly sincere and nice, but she loves playing those roles. She loves picking apart the psychology of someone who is in that position. SR: that’s why we cast her because she seemed like she really got it. She could explain it. She could intellectually articulate exactly what this person was going through. We didn’t want the audience to necessarily sympathize with the character, but we wanted them to understand the position they were in. And it became clear because she understood it so well, we thought she would be able to portray it in a way that’s fair enough that people could get where this girl is coming from. You describe Anna Kendrick as the “lightness” of the film. How was it working with her? SR: i think the first scene she’s in the movie, you can feel the audience give a sigh a relief that i’m not the only supporting character in the movie. oh thank god, there is someone else! WR: Anna is such a great person and
she does such a great job with that role of playing katherine. Seth, how was it both producing and acting the film? SR: i’ve always kind of done that. Since undeclared, i was a writer and actor on that show. And as the writer of an episode, you were really in charge of producing it. And its something i’ve been used to juggling from a young age, writing, producing and acting at the same time. to me it feels very organic, like it’s one job of making a movie. i don’t divide it up into a bunch of tiny little things. And so it’s not stressful to me. it’s more stressful to me to not know what’s happening, to not know to who’s being cast, to not know what the next rewrite is and to not know what the locations are… i do well with more information, not less information. And it was a pretty relaxed set. it was pretty mellow. And we had just come off of Green hornet, which was one of the most difficult, large scale experiences we ever had… in comparison, this seemed really easy.

his fall, hollywood a-lister salma hayek reunites with longtime co-star antonio Banderas as the pair pussyfoot around in dreamworks’ new animated feature, “Puss in Boots”, opening in theatres nationwide on November 4. in the film, hayek plays Kitty softpaws, a feline foil to Banderas’ Puss in Boots, whose character has been spun-off from the wildly popular shrek franchise. Born in Mexico, this latina actress got her big break when she starred with Banderas in the 1995 hit “desperado.” she then went on to star in such films as “from dusk Till dawn” with George Clooney, “fools Rush in” with Matthew Perry and eventually received an oscar nomination for her portrayal of frida Kahlo in the 2002 film, “frida” which she also produced. we recently had the chance to talk to salma hayek about bringing Kitty softpaws to life on the big screen, working once again with antonia Banderas, and how she balances her career with motherhood. You’ve made a couple of films already with Antonio Banderas. Were you able to record any of your sessions together and did your personal chemistry get reflected in the film?

you know, they usually never do the recordings together. antonio and i are both super busy. But we just had to do this movie because it was just too good not to make it happen. so we did it apart and even when he was not in the room, i could almost feel him as a ghost doing his thing. and i think we have great chemistry in the film.
You’ve done both live action and animated films. Do you prefer one over the other? well, they both have their charms in different ways. i really loved doing this movie because the people involved in the film were just so nice and accommodating. i don’t know how many countries and cities i actually worked on this movie from. Because you can go to any studio in any city and via satellite, they direct you and tell you what to do, and you can be doing this film. so we did a couple of these sessions in Paris, we did them in Boston, we did them in l.a...and it’s so convenient and easy. and you don’t have to wear make-up, you can try different versions of the same thing without thinking, “oh my God, we’re losing the light, so we’re not going to finish in time” so, there was a relaxed atmosphere that helps you explore the character. experience with “Puss in Boots” has been really, really good. i’m going to miss it as we’ve been doing it for three years. it was wonderful and convenient and i was so proud to show it to my little daughter. What you think about the current roles available for women in Hollywood, and if you thought there were enough choices for actresses like yourself? well no, there are never enough choices. But i’ll tell you, i have a great win in this one. Every thing Puss does, Kitty softpaws outsmarts him. how many times do you get a part where the female outsmarts the male every time in every way? and she’s always one step ahead and she’s actually a comprehensive character. i love her – i love her because she starts out one thing and she’s finishes something else. it has a dramatic art and i think that Kitty softpaws is a great female character, one of the few wonderful ones that are out there she’s ingenious, smart and very coquettish and she uses her charms. But when you think of her, you don’t think of sexy and i think that’s also important for girls. she’s a strong woman that speaks her mind and that she’s very good at what she does, even though what she does is not something that’s very good. But she does have her redemption and i think it’s great for girls to see that. Is it more difficult to get into character when you’re just doing voice work? at the beginning, this was. They did not let me read the script and they hadn’t drawn anything yet. so i was completely in a panic. There was one guy that would just say, “These are your lines, this is what’s happening.” i would have it described to me what kind of a situation Kitty softpaws was in. But i never once read a script. so, the movie was a surprise for me, too. i’m like, “oh that’s what happened.” i had my own version of the film in my head. however, somehow i got a hold of the character, and it was very easy for me once i knew what the character was. i was able to improvise a lot – a lot of lines that i made up ended up in this film. and you wouldn’t suspect that i was improvising without ever reading the script, so it was
really cool. it was hard at the beginning, and then it became easy. How do you balance work and motherhood and do you have a support network? The most important thing about the balance is that you can not see it as equally balanced. Because you have to understand that motherhood has to be your priority. you’ve got to have the priority on something and when it’s time to make a decision, it’s easier to make a decision if you understand your priority. so, for me, a way of keeping the balance is understanding that my daughter is my priority. i have a support team, but i really do believe that kids have to be raised by the parents. and it’s good to get some help but there’s got to also be a balance with a very high percentage of the parents taking care of their children. like i never go on a trip and leave my child with a nanny. i’ve never done that in my life. she’s with me most of the time. and i think that’s important. i think that it’s also important for them to feel that it’s you taking care of them. i cook for her, i give her a bath, i brush her teeth, it’s important to combine these things and a nice experience for a working mommy. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My mother would tell me when i complained of being bored, “only stupid people get bored. smart people never get bored because they have a vast imagination and a brain that can always find something productive or exciting to do, or to think about, or to imagine.” and i think this is sort of beautiful concept and it really stuck with me for the rest of my life. and my father gave me advice too. he said, “i’m going to do everything for you, but you have to promise me that you will never let anyone else treat you less than that, you will never stand for it, and that you have to treat all the people the same.” and this has meant so much in my life. and, you know, i’ve worked a lot with women that have been through abuse and i think it’s important to teach children not only to treat everybody well, but also to stand up for themselves, not in a bully way but in a kind way. and that’s it.

RATED R DIRECTED BY JONATHAN LEVINE STARRING: JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT, SETH ROGAN & ANNA KENDRICK

Seeing 50/50 is the best way to know what it’s like to have cancer, short of actually having cancer or being a caregiver to someone who does. Not that you necessarily want to know what it’s like to have cancer, but you don’t want to miss a movie as hilarious and touching as this one. It’s a great follow-up to director Jonathan Levine’s wonderful “The Wackness.” He should have a great future. As comedies about terminal illness go 50/50 leaves Adam Sandler’s Funny People and Showtime’s The Big C in the dust. The title refers to the odds of surviving the rare form of cancer Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with by a doctor who’s barely human. Fearing his mother’s (Anjelica Huston) overreaction, Adam leans for support on his best friend and polar opposite, Kyle (Seth Rogen). Adam’s girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) tries to be supportive but it’s a question of when, not if, she’s going to bail. Likewise there’s a question of how long Adam and Katherine (Anna Kendrick), his cute, inexperienced therapist, can keep their relationship professional. (He has a special smile he reserves for her.) Despite some points in Will Reiser’s based-on-true-life script being obvious, 50/50 is unconventional enoughout that, when surgery near the end, his oddsaof It turned to Adam Be arequires goodmajor phrase, But It was survival are still only 50/50. KILLER ELITE (R) «««««
For an action-suspense thriller, Killer Elite left me disappointed. I’m not sure if the director is to blame, the writers, or the actors. There was something missing in this film. Killer Elite tells the story of a retired British Elite Special Air Service officer (Jason Statham) who’s mentor (Robert De Niro) is kidnapped. In order to retrieve him, he goes on one last killing assignment and uncovers a web of corrupt politics, lies, and secrets. Despite his onscreen chemistry with Robert De Niro lacking (this is probably because De Niro can actually act and Statham is a study in masculine stunt-driven action performance), Statham’s tough-guy British swagger is enough to get anyone interested in sitting in the theater. When it was time for Statham to interact with Clive Owen you felt all was right in the ass-kicking world. All in all, don’t come to this film expecting to be blown away by any of the leads’ performances. However, this story did manage to peak my interest a bit in international espionage, British secret societies, and assassins. Then again, if I wanted any of that, all I had to do was turn on CNN at home. –Kalena Smith
LOVE CRIME (N/R) «««««
The final film by the late Alain Corneau is a mystery Hitchcock would have been proud of. Ludivine Sagnier even looks like a Hitchcock blonde as she gives what must be the widest-ranging female performance of the year, and possibly the best. She plays Isabelle, the assistant to Christine (Kristin Scott Thomas) in the Paris office of an American company. What begins as a tale of corporate and romantic intrigue takes a deadly turn. The less you know going in the better. Just let the story unfold deliciously, because you’re in good hands. –Steve Warren
MONEYBALL (PG-13) «««««
In Swingers parlance, Moneyball is money, baby! It’s a baseball movie for people who don’t like baseball (okay, I don’t dislike it; I just don’t choose to spend my time watching or obsessing over it) – and for those who do, if their interest extends to what goes on behind the scenes. True fans may better understand the revolution that took place in the 2002 season, when the underfunded Oakland A’s, after making the playoffs the year before, had their three best players stolen by wealthier teams. General manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt, surpassing his previous screen work), himself a former player, hires statistics nut Peter Brand (Jonah Hill, terrific as the straight man who gets all the laughs) to help him restaff. Brand believes there are undervalued players who could improve the team’s batting average, but hiring them is only half the battle. Beane locks horns with team manager Art Howe (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who refuses to play the new recruits. Once the team gets on a winning track, the rest is history, although fans may lament the shortage of game footage – real or staged – to illustrate events. What happens on the field is merely backstory to what director Bennett Miller (Capote) is trying to show, working from a brilliant script by two of Hollywood’s best writers, Stephen Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. Everyone involved in this movie raises their batting average. –Steve Warren
REAL STEEL (PG-13) «««««

when the sport of boxing as we know it has vanished because audiences simply lost interest. Humanoid robots hit harder, take more punishment and are destroyed in a grander fashion. Ex-boxer Charlie (Hugh Jackman) works the underground fight circuit, trying to cobble together a robot that will help him get his big score and square his debts. When his ex dies, Charlie finds himself saddled with eleven year old son Max (Dakota Goyo) who resents him. The two find common ground in their love of robot boxing and discover that they like each other. Max finds an abandoned robot and gets his father to teach it how to box like a human, and the two surprise the world. This film is actually enjoyable, even fun and even inspiring at points. Sure, it sometimes seems like an amalgam of Rocky and Invincible, but it’s a good way to spend two hours. The actors are entirely believable in their roles. The special effects complement the movie, rather than being the movie. They’re not over the top. Though sometimes predictable, the pacing and character interaction is such that the audience just doesn’t mind. There are points at which audience members applauded, especially in the climactic bout at the end of the film. This is a summer popcorn film in autumn. It’s family friendly and fun to watch. It won’t challenge the intellect, but it’s there to entertain. Women see lots of Hugh Jackman and men see robots beating each other into scrap. As I said, not a bad way to spend two hours. –Justin Patterson
TOAST (N/R) «««««
Toast is a curious coming-of-age tale that shows how Nigel Slater, a renowned chef on British television, began his lifelong love affair with food. He’s 9 years old (and played by Oscar Kennedy) for two thirds of the film, 16 (Freddie Highmore) for the rest. Nigel’s unhappy childhood consists of being bullied by his father (Ken Stott) and watching his beloved Mum (Victoria Hamilton) struggling in the kitchen. (The title refers to their customary fallback dinner after one of her spectacular disasters.) After Mum dies (no spoiler – she’s obviously on the way out from the beginning) Dad replaces her in more ways than one with Joan (Helena Bonham Carter), a “cleaner” who’s a better cook. Nigel challenges her in the kitchen with little success, even after he takes Home Ec classes in school. You don’t expect a Hollywood ending on a movie set in Wolverhampton, and you don’t get one. Dusty Springfield songs fit the period (‘60s-‘70s) setting. –Steve Warren
WARRIOR (PG-13) «««««
Concluding a virtual trilogy with The Wrestler and The Fighter, Warrior is another Rocky-esque combo of family drama and men pummeling each other for fun and profit. Warrior is being touted for its spiritual content but the only such message I got from it is that the Eleventh Commandment is “Thou shalt kick his ass!” Fine acting and fights that are brilliantly shot and edited more than compensate for holes in the plot. Nick Nolte plays Paddy, patriarch of the scattered Conlon clan. He’s coming up on 1000 days sober after being a miserable human being for 60 years or so. His son Tommy (Tom Hardy), who went with his mother when she left Paddy 14 years ago, shows up on his Pittsburgh doorstep to ask his father to train him for Sparta, a mixed martial arts tournament with a $5 million purse. Tommy’s brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton) is a married physics teacher facing foreclosure on his Philadelphia home. In desperation he also enters Sparta. A Russian is favored to win but we know the final round will have to pit brother against brother. Our noses aren’t rubbed in reconciliation at the end but we’re left with a nagging feeling that some families are better left estranged. “Warrior” is so well paced that while I’m usually antsy by the 90-minute mark, in this case two hours and 20 minutes practically flew by. –Steve Warren

What changed your mind? they were looking at another script and another star, and it really wasn’t something that i was interested in. i started thinking about what kind of movie i would make. the studio was encouraging for me to come up with my own take. i realized that my take would be very close to the original but changing a few elements to make it more accessible to today’s audience. it’s not as easy as putting cell phones in kids’ hands and making them dress in modern clothing. i needed to find a way to make it more real. How did you make the film yours while staying true to the story? it was a very delicate balance. One thing that helped was to bring it to the south. Once i did, i was much more comfortable, at my “wheelhouse,” so to speak. also, a kid from Boston being best friends with a kid from georgia was an interesting way to express those kinds of social differences. i didn’t want to change much in terms of the relationship between them i needed to address . . . not a failing of the original, but something that i never quite believed. The original was aimed at teens and young adults, whereas your film has to play to teens AND their parents who loved the 1984 version. How do you think you did, playing to both groups? i’ve never been more confident in my life with one of my movies, that i’ve made a movie that services those for whom it’s new and those who want to feel nostalgic and experience Footloose again. People come up to me saying that they were skeptical, but they saw the movie is respectful to the spirit of the original. they experienced the things that they loved in the original. i’m relieved with that, that i pulled it off. Early on, Zac Efron was to play Ren. The film changed directions and directors and you wound up using Kenny Wormald. What was it about him that made him seem right for the role? Kenny was earnest. sincere. i never felt like i was watching a performance. it wasn’t like watching someone create something and then put it in front of me. when he was auditioning he was good, but there was something he was holding back. i realized what it was – he’s from Boston. i was like, hey! i can change this guy from chicago to Boston lickety split. i told Kenny to let loose and be himself. so we see how this kid from Massachusetts does paired with a kid from georgia. there was something really

magical in that combination of accents. he completely embraced it. suddenly i’d found ren Mccormack! what i try to remind people of is in 1984 i don’t think anybody knew who Kevin Bacon was. if you cast the part with a star, they would be carrying the baggage of every other part they’d done. People wouldn’t get to have the experience that i had in 1984. i didn’t know who sarah Jessica Parker was, or chris Penn or Lori singer or Kevin Bacon. i felt like i’d discovered them back then. so we made it someone who was new and fresh and good. when i looked at Bacon i saw a hungry young actor who wanted to show the world that he’s serious, he means business. it doesn’t matter if he’s wearing tight jeans and has spiky hair while he’s dancing through an abandoned warehouse. he means it. he means it from the core of his heart. Kenny does that, and he does it in spades. his performance, i think, is just as good as Kevin’s. i never like saying someone’s better than another person because it’s very suggestive and it doesn’t really serve what the performance is supposed to be. does Kenny do justice to the role of ren Mccormack just as Kevin Bacon did? Unequivocally, yes. How did you find the process of casting Atlanta locals? a lot of the greatest performances in the movie are by local actors. i’m particularly proud of one, and i’m going to claim her as my discovery, but there’s a girl who plays the sarah Jessica Parker role. we could not find anybody that i liked in hollywood and i told everybody “alright, we’ve gotta find rusty down in georgia.” this girl came in, she auditioned. she was born in Puerto rico but raised in georgia. she had the southern accent and a beautiful, beautiful face and expressive eyes. i asked, “is that accent real?” and she was like, “Yes, sir. i was raised in georgia.” she has this beautiful Latina look and i’m like, “thank you, movie gods! You just answered my prayers!” her name is Ziah colon. she’s going to pan out and be someone that people want to know. You’ve said that music has played a huge role in your life, Hustle & Flow won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 1984, when you were thirteen years old, what was your relationship with music? ‘84 was a big year for me. not only was it the year that Footloose came out, and the Footloose soundtrack, it was the year that Purple rain came out. all those 80s movie that people love to dismiss, i think were brilliant and quite hardedged. Flashdance had brutal scenes in it, you know? it had some raw sexuality to it and it had an incredible soundtrack. People went out and bought soundtracks because they wanted to relive the experience of the movies. that doesn’t happen so much with soundtracks anymore. My dream is that people do that with my soundtrack of Footloose, that they want to go out and buy it and try to re-live the experience.

SEE JANE BLEED
Invites You And A Guest To Attend A Special Advance Screening Of
Maria Bello Returns To TV With NBC’s Prime Suspect By Alex S. MorriSon
m
aria Bello first made a name for herself with a recurring character on er back in 1997. But let’s face it, most folks didn’t really take notice of her until she strutted her stuff as the hard-nosed boss of a bevy of scantily-clad girls in Coyote Ugly. in the years since, Bello has proven herself one of film’s most intriguing actresses, delivering award-worthy turns in The Cooler and a History of Violence while accruing a diverse resume that includes everything from black comedy (Thank You for smoking) and blockbuster action films (World trade Center) to chick flicks (The Jane austen Book Club) and family films (The mummy: tomb of the dragon emperor). But the truth is that, until NBC tapped the 44-year-old Pennsylvania native to play the lead character in its version of the popular British tV show Prime suspect (which catapulted Helen mirren to international stardom), Bello’s talents had rarely been tapped to their full potential. as hard-nosed detective Jane timoney, Bello gets an opportunity to show all the tools she has at her disposal, from wry humor and intense action to dynamic emotion. We recently had an opportunity to speak with her about how this project lured her back to television, what she and Jane have in common, and how it feels to follow in Helen mirren’s legendary footsteps. What was it about Detective Jane that caught your interest initially? it was purely the writing. i hadn’t considered doing a television show for 10 years, but then i read alex Cunningham’s script. i hadn’t read a woman like this– such a complex woman who was so incredibly self-possessed, unapologetic and quirky. i knew in my gut that i might have to do this. after meeting alex and the producers, i was sure, and i am a very, very lucky woman today that i get to play this woman ever single day. Were you a big fan of the original Prime Suspect when it came out? i saw a couple of them years ago when i lived in New York. i’ve always been a huge fan of Helen mirren. she’s one of my heroes. But this version was so original and interesting, and i think it’s so different from the other show. Yes, Jane is a strong, central female character, but she is very different. What ways does Jane have of connecting with witnesses and suspects in the upcoming episodes? i think Jane is strategic without being manipulative. every time she talks to a suspect, she is being psychologically strategic and trying to find out what would work to get information from them.

a beautiful woman, so it’ll be nice to have that energy on the show as well. Did you draw on any sort of real-life experiences with breaking into “boys’ clubs”? i don’t know one woman in any career who has seen the show and not said that something similar has happened to them. my friends who are agents, my friends who are real estate people, we’ve all had these discussions. i think it’s less common with the younger generation of men because they grew up with women in the workforce. But it’s certainly still something that we struggle with from time to time. What have you found the most challenging aspect of this role for you? Honestly, the most challenging aspect has been trying to figure out my life, and how that works with having a 10-year-old son who’s going back to school. i also do [charitable] work in Haiti, and i lived there part-time last year, so now it’s time to figure all that out. i’m so lucky to have producers that are making that much easier for me than i thought it would be. But that’s been the biggest challenge. The rest of it is like going to a playground every single day and being in a sandbox with a bunch of amazing kids. Honestly, i’ve very rarely been on such a creatively collaborative process. it’s very unconventional to have an hour-long series that doesn’t shoot 16 hours a day or take itself so seriously. it comes from alex and Pete and (sarah) being really open creatively.
Did you shadow real-life homicide detectives in your research? i worked in New York City bars for a long time with NYPd and fdNY guys, so i organically had a sense of what that was. i feel like what alex was able to bring to the script was this really dark, amazing sense of humor that all these guys have.
The character is kind of a hard ass. How much of that is you and how much is acting? Jane and i are very similar. i think that Jane is alex and i combined. it’s not all me, because she puts these amazing words in my mouth that really creates this character. i feel like Jane is so well balanced. i don’t find her to be a hard-ass: i find her really direct and candid and honest to a fault.
Hanging out with a bunch of guys can get a little blue with the salty language. How that’s going? We’re really having a blast! i grew up with brothers in a neighborhood of all boys, so for me it’s just a natural part of my life. We also have a new cast member, the amazing elizabeth rodriguez, who i can’t wait for people to see. she’s not only an extraordinary actor, but
You’ve done everything from comedy to serious drama in terms of your film career. Do you prefer one over the other? i don’t really care if it’s lighter or heavier. it just has to be something that moves me and that i connect with emotionally. This character, since i read her on the page, i knew that there was a depth and breadth of emotions that would be really exciting to explore.

FILM
2011 FALL
Movie Preview BY RYAN LOFTIS
I
t’s the holiday season, when everybody’s thoughts turn to what they’ll be getting for Christmas (or Hannukah, or Kwanzaa). But what will you be getting at the movies this year? Double doses of some of your favorites, for starters, with two movies each coming from George Clooney and Steven Spielberg. Get reacquainted with the Twilight crew, the Happy Feet penguins, the Chipmunks and Ethan Hunt. Get a new look at old favorites like The Three Musketeers and the Muppets. Get a fictionalized version of the lives of American icons like J. Edgar Hoover and Marilyn Monroe. Most of all, get ready for stars making bids for Oscars, comebacks or maybe even both...
OCTOBER 7
THE IDES OF MARCH
The Stars: Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Max Minghella, Evan Rachel Wood The Shill: Democratic Governor Mike Morris (Clooney) is running for president. When Stephen Myers (Gosling), a young media strategist on Morris’ campaign, discovers a dark secret about the candidate, he must decide whether or not to disclose the truth. The Skinny: “The Ides of March” is already being mentioned as an Oscar race frontrunner. It’s familiar territory for Clooney.
REAL STEEL
The Stars: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand The Shill: Charlie Kenton (Jackman) was a rising fighter until the introduction of 2,000-pound, 8-foot robots to boxing ruined his chances for a title. Reduced to being a small-time promoter, Charlie teams up with his estranged son, Max (Goyo) to create a champion fighter. The Skinny: Call it Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots: The Movie.
DIRTY GIRL
The Stars: Juno Temple, Milla Jovovich, William H. Macy, Mary Steenburgen, Dwight Yoakam, Jeremy Dozier The Shill: Norman, Oklahoma, 1987. High school bad girl Danielle (Temple) wants to go to California and find the father she’s never known. Closeted homosexual Clarke (Dozier) wants to escape being sent to military school. Together, they hit the road. The Skinny: One of the classic road movies is Thelma and Louise, which introduced Brad Pitt to the world 20 years ago. Perhaps Dirty Girl will introduce some new stars.
OCTOBER 14
THE BIG YEAR
The Stars: Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Brian Dennehy, Rashida Jones, Rosamund Pike, Dianne Wiest The Shill: Three bird watchers (Martin, Wilson, Black) enter a year-long contest called the Big Year, where the goal is to spot the largest number of birds in North America. PG 16 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2011
The Skinny: The movie has three funny leads, but a plot centered on bird watching could be a tough sell. Maybe that’s why “bird watching competition” is never mentioned in the trailer.
OCTOBER 21
THE THREE MUSKETEERS
The Stars: Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Mads Mikkelsen, Gabriella Wilde, Juno Temple, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz The Shill: The Three Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans, Stevenson) and a hot-headed new recruit (Lerman) have a mission to thwart evil Richlieu (Waltz). The Skinny: Orlando Bloom, of course, counts the Pirates of the Caribbean series among his credits. He shouldn’t expect the same success here.
OCTOBER 28
ANONYMOUS
The Stars: Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall, Edward Hogg, Jamie Campbell Bower, Derek Jacobi The Shill: A story set in Elizabethian England that tackles the question of who was the author of plays credited to William Shakespeare. The Skinny: Independence Day. Godzilla. The Day After Tomorrow. With credits like these, Roland Emmerich seems an unlikely choice to direct this movie. Good thing he has excellent leads at his service.
IN TIME
The Stars: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Muphy, Vincent Kartheiser, Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Galecki, Olivia Wilde, Matthew Bomer The Shill: The good news is people stop aging at 25. The bad news is they’re genetically engineered to live only one more year unless they can buy more time. The Skinny: Writer-director Andrew Niccol handled a similarly compelling premise in 1997’s underrated Gattaca. With roles like this, Timberlake continues to move ever farther away from his boy band persona.
JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN
The Stars: Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Dominic West, Rosamund Pike, Daniel Kaluuya The Shill: Her Majesty’s Secret Service had never seen an agent like Johnny English (Atkinson) - at least not until he went off the grid and ended up in Asia. But after learning of an assassination plot against the Chinese premier, his superiors know they have to track English down. After all, he’s the only man for the job. The Skinny: The Johnny English movies must have a small but incredibly passionate following. Why else would Universal keep making them?
NOVEMBER 4
A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS
The Stars: John Cho, Kal Penn, Paula Garcs, Danneel Harris, Tom Lennon, Danny Trejo, Elias Koteas, Eddie Kaye Thomas, David Krumholtz, Patton Oswalt,Neil Patrick Harris The Shill: Six years after escaping Guantanamo Bay, Harold (Cho) and Kumar (Penn) have grown apart and found new best friends. They’re reunited when Kumar’s efforts to redirect a mysterious package to Harold’s house results in the prized Christmas tree belonging to Harold’s father-in-law being set on fire. Rather than admit his mistake, Harold decides to join Kumar to find a replacement tree. A wild adventure through New York City ensues. The Skinny: Harold and Kumar are now officially a franchise. It’s amazing what having the munchies can do for you sometimes.
PUSS IN BOOTS
The Stars: Voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris, Guillermo del Toro The Shill: You know him as one of Shrek’s sidekicks, but now Puss in Boots is headlining his own movie. The feline warrior teams up with Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws on a quest to steal the Goose that lays the Golden Eggs. The Skinny: Puss in Boots was an entertaining supporting character in the Shrek movies, but it’s debatable whether he has enough to sustain a film on his own. Donkey would seem to be a more promising choice. Obviously, DreamWorks disagrees.
TOWER HEIGHTS
The Stars: Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni, Gabourey Sidibe, Casey Affleck, Stephen Henderson, Judd Hirsch, Michael Pena, Alan Alda The Shill: Josh Kovacs (Stiller) manages of New York City’s most luxurious and secure residences. One of the tenants is Wall Street giant Arthur Shaw (Alda), who is under house arrest for stealing $2 billion from his investors, who include the tower staffers. Looking for revenge before Shaw escapes justice, Josh enlists a petty crook (Murphy) to steal what he thinks Shaw is hiding in his condo. The Skinny: Remember 5 years ago when Eddie Murphy was in Dreamgirls and everybody said he was making a comeback? Then came Norbit. And Meet Dave. And Imagine That. With a great cast directed by Brett Ratner, Tower Heist could be Murphy’s latest comeback
vehicle. The only real cause for concern is the eight credited screenwriters.
MY WEEK WITH MARILYN
The Stars: Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Emma Watson, Julia Ormond, Dougray Scott, Zoe Wanamaker, Toby Jones, Philip Jackson, Geraldine Somerville, Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale The Shill: 1956. The set of “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Marilyn Monroe (Williams) is on honeymoon with her new husband, playwright Arthur Miller (Scott). When Miller leaves England, young assistant Colin Clark (Redmayne) introduces Monroe to British life. Clark’s week with the screen icon was later revealed in a memoir, upon which this movie is based. The Skinny: Her role as Monroe earned Williams the cover of Vogue magazine. Don’t be surprised if it also earns her an Oscar nomination.
NOVEMBER 11
J. EDGAR
The Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench, Armie Hammer, Josh Lucas, Ken Howard The Shill: Clint Eastwood directs this biopic of legendary and controversial longtime Federal Bureau of Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover (DiCaprio). The Skinny: Combine an actor of DiCaprio’s stature with a director of Eastwood’s stature and the result is one of the fall’s most prestigious pictures.
11-11-11
The Stars: Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Wendy Glenn, Lluis Soler, Angela Rosal, Brendan Price, Salome Jimenez, Benjamin Cook The Shill: Following the death of his wife and child, successful American author Joseph Crone (Gibbs) travels to Barcelona, Spain, to reunite with his brother and father. Strange happenings and constant sightings of the number 11 force Joseph to realize that he’s being warned about a horrifying event. The Skinny: Having previously directed three Saw movies, writer-director Darren Lynn Bousman certainly has experience with successful thrillers. But be warned: centering a scary movie around a number didn’t work so well for Jim Carrey in The Number 23.
JACK AND JILL
The Stars: Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino The Shill: Successful advertising executive Jack Sadelstein (Sandler) is less than grateful when his identical twin sister, Jill (also Sandler), visits his family for Thanksgiving.
The Skinny: Sandler is still a big box office draw, so it seems premature for him to be doing drag. It would be interesting to know how Pacino was convinced to sign on for this.
NOVEMBER 18
HAPPY FEET TWO
The Stars: Voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Alecia Moore (P!nk), Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Sofia Vergara, Common, Hugo Weaving, Magda Szubanski, Anthony LaPaglia, Richard Carter, Benjamin “Lil P-Nut” Flores, Jr. The Shill: Mumbel has a problem. He’s the Master of Tap, but his son Erik hates to dance. He has an even worse problem when Erik runs away and befriends The Mighty Sven, a flying penguin. The Skinny: Sequels usually have a hard time living up to their predecessors. This one is no exception, as the original “Happy Feet” won the Best Animated Picture Oscar. Whether it’s Oscar worthy or not, it will no doubt make enough money to leave Warner Brothers in a festive Thanksgiving mood.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1
The Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser, Nikki Reed The Shill: In the latest Twilight series chapter, newlyweds Edward (Pattinson) and Bella (Stewart) are expecting a child, one who poses a threat to both the wolf pack and the vampire coven. So much for domestic bliss. The Skinny: Barring an unexpected disaster, this will no doubt be one of the fall’s most popular movies.
NOVEMBER 23
A DANGEROUS METHOD
The Stars: Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Cassel The Shill: The story of how the relationship between Carl Jung (Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and Sabina Spielrein (Knightley), the woman who comes between them, created modern psychoanalysis as we know it. The Skinny: Having masterfully explored the darker sides of the human psyche in the past, it’s fitting that David Cronenberg was chosen to tell this story.
ARTHUR CHRISTMAS
The Stars: Voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Ashley Jensen The Shill: It’s hard growing up in your dad’s shadow - especially when Dad is Santa Claus. Arthur is Santa’s youngest son, a clumsy but well-meaning boy who is the only family member who still loves Christmas. Older brother Steve has established a high-tech, military like operation at the North Pole. Santa himself is still in charge but is ready to move on. Then there’s Santa’s father, 136-year-old Grandsanta, who hates all modern conveniences, including the technology Steve has installed. The Skinny: It’s a clever idea to show us Santa’s extended family, but Arthur Christmas will probably lose its bid for being fall’s top animated movie to Happy Feet Two.
HUGO
The Stars: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Emily Mortimer, Michael Stuhlbarg The Shill: Hugo (Butterfield), an orphan living in the walls of a Paris train station, tries to solve a mystery linking his deceased father, the toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped
lock seemingly missing its key. The Skinny: This is the first time legendary Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese has tackled a children’s story. Good thing he’s legendary Oscar winner Martin Scorsese.
THE MUPPETS
The Stars: Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Alan Arkin, Jack Black, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis, Kathy Griffin, Ricky Gervais, Emily Blunt The Shill: Evil oil tycoon Tex Richman (Cooper) plans to raze the Muppet Theatre and drill for the oil beneath it. The only way to stop him and raise the $10 million necessary to save the theatre is for the Muppets to come together and put on the best telethon ever. The Skinny: The Muppets haven’t been seen on the big screen in 12 years, when Muppets from Space flopped. Why should this time be different? A big holiday opening weekend and a big-name cast, for starters.
PIRANHA 3DD
The Stars: Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, David Koechner, Meagan Tandy, Paul James Jordan, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer, David Hasselhoff The Shill: Visitors come to the popular summer attraction The Big Wet Water Park for a good time. What they’ll get is an encounter with vicious piranhas. The Skinny: For those who feel there just aren’t enough gory movies during the holiday season, this one’s for you.
THE DESCENDANTS
The Stars: George Clooney, Judy Greer, Shailene Woodley, Matthew Lillard Beau Bridges, Robert Forster The Shill: Life is difficult for Matt King (Clooney), whose wife is comatose after a boating accident. It gets even tougher when he learns his wife has been cheating on him. The Skinny: This is Clooney’s second Oscar frontrunner of the fall, after The Ides of March. Writer-director Alexander Payne, he of About Schmidt and Sideways, is in territory he knows well.
DECEMBER 2
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
The Stars: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller The Shill: Eva (Swinton) and her 15-year-old son, Kevin (Miller), have had a difficult relationship since his birth. When Kevin commits a horrible act, Eva must confront her feelings, as well as those of the enraged community. The Skinny: This movie earned writer-director Lynne Ramsay a Palme d’Or nomination at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. The question is whether its difficult subject matter will allow that critical acclaim to translate to commercial success.
DECEMBER 9
NEW YEAR’S EVE
The Stars: Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Robert De Niro, Josh Duhamel, Zac Efron, Hector Elizondo, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Lea Michele, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Til Schweiger, Hilary Swank, Sofia Vergara The Shill: Director Garry Marshall tells the interconnected stories of many New Yorkers as they
celebrate the impending New Year. The Skinny: The last time Marshall told a holiday centered story with a big-name cast, the result was the critically hated but financially successful Valentine’s Day. New Line is certainly banking on the latter, if not the former, this time around.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL
The Stars: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Lea Seydoux, Anil Kapoor The Shill: The Impossible Missions Force is shut down after it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ethan Hunt (Cruise) leads his team on a mission to clear the organization’s name. The Skinny: It’s surprising that Paramount ordered a fourth Mission: Impossible, since the third installment failed to even recoup its budget. Still, even after several disappointments you can’t count Tom Cruise out.
ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS – CHIPWRECKED
The Stars: Jason Lee, David Cross, Jenny Slate, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler , Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate The Shill: The Chipmunks and Chipettes find their trip on a luxury cruise liner come to a sudden halt after the ship crashes onto a remote island. The Skinny: Who woulda thunk it? The Chipmunks are bankable box office draws.
SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS
The Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Fry The Shill: Legendary detective Sherlock Holmes (Downey) may have finally met his intellectual match with the arrival of criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty (Harris), who counts the Crown Prince of Austria among his victims. The Skinny: Last year, Warner Brothers successfully revived the classic inspector for a new generation of moviegoers. This sequel should further cement Downey’s reputation as Hollywood’s Comeback Kid.
DECEMBER 23
THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN
The Stars: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones, Mackenzie Crook The Shill: Tintin (Bell) is an ambitious young reporter who finds himself in a world of high adventure during his pursuit of a good story. The Skinny: It’s been more than a decade since Bell made his big splash with Billy Elliot. For him to be rediscovered would be great. Being directed by Steven Spielberg could help with that.
WE BOUGHT A ZOO
The Stars: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Colin Ford, Angus MacFadyen, John Michael Higgins The Shill: Benjamin Mee’s memoir comes to the big screen. Mee (Damon) and his family spend their life savings on a dilapidated zoo with 200 exotic animals in the English countryside. The Skinny: This is director Cameron Crowe’s first film since the Elizabethtown fiasco of 6 years ago. Hopefully he’s once again the Crowe of Say Anything and Jerry Maguire.
YOUNG ADULT
The Stars: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt, J.K. Simmons The Shill: Teen literature writer Mavis Gary (Theron) returns to her small hometown and tries to win back her high school sweetheart (Wilson), even though he’s now married. The Skinny: The last time director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody teamed up, the result was the surprise smash Juno. With Oscar winner Theron in the lead, they seem to have a good chance to repeat their success.
DECEMBER 21
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
The Stars: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgard, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen, Joely Richardson The Shill: A computer hacker (Mara) aids a journalist (Craig) in his search for a woman missing 40 years. The Skinny: Expectations are high for this movie, the first in a three-picture adaptation of the literary series “The Millennium Trilogy” that has sold 50 million copies in 46 countries. The credentials of Craig, director David Fincher and screenwriter Steven Zaillian - who won an Oscar for “Schindler’s List” - should allow it to meet those expectations.
DECEMBER 25
PARIAH
The Stars: Adepero Oduye, Pernell Walker, Aasha Davis, Charles Parnell, Sahra Mellesse, Kim Wayans The Shill: A 17-year-old girl (Oduye) living with her family in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood begins coming to terms with her lesbianism. The Skinny: Seemingly every year a sleeper film comes out of nowhere and becomes a critical and commercial success. With its success at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Pariah could be that film this year.
DECEMBER 28
WAR HORSE
The Stars: Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Kebbell The Shill: The close friendship of young Albert (Irvine) and his horse, Joey, is ruptured when Joey is sold during World War One. As Joey moves through the war, he inspires everyone he meets, from the British cavalry to German soldiers to a French farmer and his granddaughter. The Skinny: The source material for this movie is a successful book that was turned into an internationally successful play. Now the film version is being directed by Steven Spielberg. This Month’s Hottest Shows by sacha dzuba
OctOber 5 - the LemOnheads
The Earl The Lemonheads ruled the radio waves of the 90’s breaking into success with their album It’s a Shame About Ray and a cover of Mrs. Robinson. After a few other albums of hits and duds and some drug issues, the Lemonheads receded from the forefront of the music scene. There was an album called The Lemonheads which is a bit of return to form for the band. A newer album of covers called Varshons was released later, but the exciting reason for attending this particular show has nothing to do with either of these. Fans take note, The Lemonheads will be performing their album It’s a Shame About Ray in its entirety, from start to finish! It’s a perfect way to relive some jingly jangly grunge classics from the 90’s and remember a time when the music scene wasn’t inured in pop stars and hip hop. It certainly seem likely that you’ll be able to hear some other Lemonheads hits like “Into Your Arms” and “If I Could Talk I’d Tell You”. Relive your youth and if you don’t know them, discover them for the first time. Come on, feel the Lemonheads.
OctOber 11 - arctic mOnkeys
The Tabernacle British indie rock band theArcticMonkeysreally made a splash with their first release Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” was certainly well played in every indie club I ever danced in. The Arctic Monkeys are widely considered
to be one of the first acts to gain the public’s attention through the internet and distribution through fans. Suck It And See is their latest studio album, many are heralding it as a return to form after their previous album’s change in style. You might think that it’s a bit of a rude title, but it’s really just brit-speak for “give it a try”. If you don’t know the sound, think early Strokes and Libertines. The Arctic Monkeys are sure to mix a generous portion of new material with songs from their previous albums. Go for a night of punk rock energy mixed with indie sensibilities, make sure you’re dolled-up to strut the dancefloor.
fantastic concert experiment, Duran Duran Unstaged, directed by none other than David Lynch. Whether or not you’re a new wave, new romantic fan, you’ve heard their hits from the 80’s and 90’s. Their new Mark Ronson produced album, released on the band’s own label, is a return to form that some have called their best since Rio. Duran Duran are definitely the band to dance to “when the bomb drops”.
OctOber 16 – adeLe
The Masquerade Their name comes from “Ladytron” by Roxy Music and they’ve been described by Brian Eno as “the best of English pop music”. Blending elements of synthpop, electropop, shoegaze, and electronica, and New Wave. Ladytron have captivated fans since their hits “Playgirl” and “Seventeen”. Their latest effort, Gravity of the Seducer, continues their style of swirling electronics with the haunting echo of shimmering female vocals. Their latest singles “White Elephant” and “Ace of Hz” especially showcase the style of music that they are best known for. Expect song choices spanning all five of their albums. This is a concert to go to dance, move, and sway to the music and be dazzled by an array of halogens, strobes, rope lights, and multi-colored spinning bulbs. A glittering evening of electropop awaits you.
The Fox Theatre After previously canceling the remaining 9 dates of her North American tour, Adele is coming to the Fox. We promise this time. Adele is a soulful and passionate brit. A powerhouse voice enriches her selfdescribed “heartbroken soul” musical style. Similar in some respects to the late great Amy Winehouse and Mary J. Blige, she has already won two Grammy awards for best new artist and best female pop performance. Those who have seen her live know that it doesn’t take much to create an intense and memorable Adele concert. Nothing flashy is needed; her incredible and powerful voice is an aural sight to behold. Heartbreak is her muse and her songs are often filled with personal experiences. Yet, this artist has a wonderfully self-deprecating humor and is has many personal stories that she shares with her audience. Adele embraces her melancholy and pushes through to discover a newfound strength through catharsis. A beautiful cover of the Cure’s “Lovesong” shows her ability to create new and deep emotion even through the music of other artists. Listen out for the dark gospel revenge tune “Rolling in the Deep”. This soul refuses to be defeated.

L Word may eclipse her musical spotlight a bit, but don’t be fooled into thinking “Oh geez, popular actor makes a record”. The bubbly electo-pop sound of U. H. H. is dancier Ladytron shades of Lush. Their dreamy voices weave in and out of each other tricked out with dancey beats and electronic bursts and melodies. The live band is fully fleshed out with guitarist Brad Ackley and drummer Josh Kane, adding musical skill and energy. Uh Huh Her are touring to support their recently released sophomore album Nocturnes (Oct. 11). Expect lots of lipstick lesbians whipped into frenzy over “Alice”, the music is still sure to please with swirly dream guitar lines ala Lush and the aforementioned Ladytron-esque style of dancey, sultry electro-pop.
OctOber 27 – reverend hOrtOn heat
The Masquerade All the glitter and glam from the neon streets of Las Vegas, there’s an elvis-like swagger to the psychobilly of Texas-native Reverend Horton Heat. Their music is self-described as “country-fed punkabilly”, mixing country, punk, rock-a-billy, big band, and swing often with humorous lyrics. Laughin’ and Cryin’ with Reverend Horton Heat is their most recent offering, which finds them leaning toward a more countrified rock-a-billy sound. The frenetic energy of their live shows and their sense of humor truly endears them to their fans and audience. The mighty Reverend certainly has a cult fan following all around the world, he’s toured endlessly. Get on down for a psychobilly tent revival.
OctOber 28 – st. vincent
The Earl Annie Clark, otherwise known as St. Vincent, is no stranger to the stage, having been a member of the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens’ touring band. She even had a song she worked on with Bon Iver on the Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack. Her music and style is a chaotic mix of Goldfrapp, David Bowie, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, and Feist. St. Vincent’s latest offering, Strange Mercy, strips back some of the layered arrangements and amps up some seriously outrageous guitar playing. Discover catharsis in the sublime through the music of St. Vincent.
Artists on the verge of making it big
Latest Project: strange Confessor For Fans of: Fugazi, shellac, rademacher Why You Should Care: Because the Fresno-based band is reviving the ‘90s post-punk sound made popular by influential labels such as Dischord and
n talking about Fresno’s the Fay Wrays, you almost inevitably end up talking about “the sounD”. to hear drummer eli reyes explain it, what we are hearing on their latest album, strange Confessor, is not simply the sounD, but their interpretation of it. he’ll explain more about it further down, but all you really need to know is that it helped reyes and partner ben Mcentee (guitar, bass, vocals) create a Diy masterpiece of distorted guitars and shouted vocals. both refugees of the local Fresno music scene having put time in other bands, the duo – which can grow as big as a five-piece when recording – seems to ignore any obvious influences in creating their wholly original sound. reyes spoke recently about the new record, their local music scene and, of course, shed a little more light on the sounD.
Touch & Go, continuing the musical legacy passed down by legends like Ian MacKaye and steve albini.
Can you clear up the confusion: Is the band a two piece or three piece? The band is actually anywhere from a 2-to-5 piece. We started out as a duo, but over the years we’ve added bass, keys, and another guitar. however, we are still more than comfortable doing shows as a duo if needed.
is not the sounD itself, but instead our own representation of what the sounD is or might sound like. the sounD encompasses every facet of our lives, from our interactions with family and friends to all artistic endeavors. one could call the sounD god if they were so inclined, but i have not reached that level as of yet. the sounD might just be god’s handmaiden or butler.
Obviously there are a slew of different music scenes in Southern and Northern California. What is the music scene like in Central Cali? The scene in Fresno is difficult to really pin down. There is an ebb and flow to the music scene that is due in part that Fresno is really a hub for incubation of artistic talent. The scene is static. it never really gets off the ground because of the transitory nature of most artistic people who come from the central valley. They leave, they go to southern California or northern California or Portland (mostly Portland). but there is a dedicated group of people (mostly those who have left and then returned back to Fresno) who make music and contribute to the arts in the town and surrounding areas. The scene - and i know this is on some press release stuff that we have made, but it is really a perfect description - is more myth of sisyphus than the little engine that could. in other words, there are high artistic water marks in the scene but it always comes down. The cycle is about five years. every five years something big happens. i have been in the scene for almost 15 and i have seen my share of ups and downs in the scene.
You had a number of different folks contributing to this record didn’t you? yeah, eric Peters played bass on a track as did luke giffen (who plays with eli in The Quiet americans), those two guys are veterans in the local scene and it was awesome to have them be a part of it. Whitney Freeman who provided female vocals plays in the local band achievement house and we were happy to have her supply her vocal talents to the record. lastly, steve loveless played rhodes piano on a few tracks, and since then he has become more of a semipermanent member of the band.
Is there a general concept to the new record? although not technically a concept album, the general theme works around how art/music is produced and what the process looks and/or feels like. i have come up with the concept of the sounD, which is a discreet entity that speaks to eli and thus creates what music we come up with. We are simply arbiters of the sounD and all writing credits go to the sounD itself. The music that we perform
What’s next for the band? Well, we are already planning on recording another record. What we want is to make as much music as we can and to have as many people listen to it as possible, so we are definitely thankful for the internet in that regard. We will also continue to play as many shows as we are able to, and hopefully we’ll make our way to austin for sXsW next year.
Any plans to play outside CA? at this point in time we don’t have the ability to tour like we did when we were in our twenties. There are jobs, wives, and children that we need to consider. We were supposed to head out to sXsW earlier this year, but due to scheduling conflicts we weren’t able to attend. however, if all goes according to plan we will be heading out there next year.

Album Reviews Reviews by B. Love, John Moore and Jon Latham
GRINGO STAR – COUNT YER LUCKY STARS (Gigantic Music) Out of the garage and onto the international stage BL: If the Atlanta garage-rock scene was the British pop scene of the early ‘60s, Gringo Star would be The Beatles to the Black Lips’ Rolling Stones. Both bands have been kicking around for over a decade (with Gringo Star originally known as A Fir-Ju Well); both bands were influenced by early British Invasion acts such as The Animals and The Kinks; and both bands have earned critical acclaim on a national level. But only one is the sort of act you could imagine your ex-hippie mom digging (hint: it ain’t the Black Lips). While the Black Lips went with big-name producer Mark Ronson for their latest effort, the Gringos reunited with big-name local Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter) for their first album since 2008’s All Y’all. The opening track, “Shadow,” falls between early ‘60s garagerock and the off-kilter indie eclecticism of Vampire Weekend: Laid-back drums and a walking bassline provide rock-solid foundation, rhythm guitar adds percussive counterpoint, and effects-drenched vocals give it a heady, dub reggae-like appeal. “You Want It” and “Got It” both benefit from perfectly harmonized background vocals and immensely infectious hooks, with simple sing-along choruses even a kid could love. The rollicking title track, with its propulsive drums, dynamic energy build and fiery guitar solo, provides a nice change from the mostly mid-tempo pace. The quartet– brothers Peter and Nicholas Fuginele, Christopher Kaufmann and Peter DeLorenzo– switches off on instruments and lead vocals frequently, and brings in guests Anna Kramer and Julia Furginele for backup singing on the mesmerizing “Esmarelda” and the countrified “Light In The Sky.” But Gringo Star’s retroinspired sound remains cohesive, and Count Yer Lucky Stars is an accomplished, accessible LP that further refines the raw promise of their debut. ELVIS PRESLEY – YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT: THE COMPLETE ’56 ELVIS PRESLEY MASTERS (RCA/Legacy) Another necessary boxed set for The King JM: In 1956, a 21-year-old Elvis Aaron Presley was on the verge of becoming a phenomenally influential music icon. Recently signed to RCA, 1956 was the year his debut came out and more importantly the year his (big gasp) lewd hip movements on The Ed Sullivan Show created massive amounts of controversy and cemented his legacy as the first real badass of rock and roll, a legacy that even bloating and bad Vegas shows could never erase. With the Young Man With the Big Beat boxed set, Legacy Records is releasing a fantastic collection of musical history. The five-disc set includes PG 20 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2011
The Dean’s List
two CDs of original digitally remastered RCA masters, a CD of live performances (including a complete live, unreleased show from Shreveport, Louisiana; and sets from Little Rock, Arkansas and Las Vegas),a CD of recording session outtakes and an additional CD of interviews. Though the performances and remastered CDs are great in their own right, it’s the outtakes and interview CDs that are bound to interest longtime fans. The outtakes are an intimate listen into music history being made, while the interviews, including hard-to-find spoken word recordings from Elvis and a very early TV Guide interview with the singer and Col. Tom Parker, are simply fascinating (but one of the interviews takes an odd, borderline creeper turn when the reporter starts asking him about his sideburns and when he first started growing them. This final disc also includes the almost legendary Warwick Hotel interview and some rare Elvis RCA Victrola advertisements. It’s surprising that RCA and others would have the foresight to hold onto these recordings, but thankfully they did. Almost six decades later, it’s like listening to history being made. Long live the King! STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS – MIRROR TRAFFIC (Matador) Indie-rock’s elder statesman still in fine form JL: Is there pressure to follow up a successful reunion endeavor of your legendary band from years past with new material of your own? I, for one, am not sure, but from the sound of Pavement’s head honcho Stephen Malkmus, returning in fine form with the Jicks, that burden can rest on your Don Henley’s and your Lindsay Buckingham’s. Mirror Traffic, SM and the Jicks newest release, finds Malkmus doing as he always has, writing guitar rock with his own signature pinch of cynicism and sarcasm. Coming off the heels of Pavement’s successful reunion jaunt just last year, Malkmus delivers an inspired song cycle, starting a strong new chapter in a solo career that seems to improve with every release. Early buzz regarding the producer credit belonging to none other than Beck Hansen brought with it speculation of the aural possibilities that might come with Mirror Traffic. No worries, purists; there are no crazy-ass samples or bombastic effects. This is not a meeting of the minds; more than anything, Hansen’s obvious affection for Malkmus as a songwriter and underappreciated guitar man create a stripped down sound that mirrors Pavement material circa Wowee Zowee. Highlights include rockers like “Forever 28” and “Spazz”, showcasing the one-of-a-kind guitar work that influenced a generation of indie rockers. Beautiful pedal-steel undercurrents accent the beauty of “Long Hard Book” and “Share the Red”, a 1-2 punch on the second half of the album that shows a softer, introspective side of Malkmus that is out of character for his typical lyrical work (sing along to “Shady Lane”, anyone?) The curse of your Eagles and Fleetwood Mac type tours is the lack of sincerity in the intentions. Do you really think Joe Walsh wants to hang out
with Timothy B. Schmidt? The grand finale of Pavement, as it played out along the tour, was truly a celebration of what that band created, and from that experience, it seems obvious that age has not necessarily caused Malkmus to wise up and care. For this, we can all be thankful.
Rest of the Class THE PLANET SMASHERS – DESCENT INTO THE VALLEY OF… (PID) Canadian ska-punks show why the genre is on life support JM: Ska has been written off so many times at this point, it’s become one of the biggest clichés of music journalism. That being said, if the genre is actually at death’s door, don’t expect the latest from Montreal two-tone lovers The Planet Smashers to resurrect it. On Descent Into the Valley of…, their ninth album, these wacky Canucks with a horn section are simply re-recording some of the same music they have been creating since 1994. Not technically, of course, but you’d be hard pressed to spot the differences, with each song sounding almost note for note and goofy lyric for goofy lyric identical. The guys, who have got to be well into their 30s at this point, quickly churn through each of the 16 party anthems on autopilot with all the urgency of a guy simply desperate to get back to the Lazy Boy and a few hours of TV before bedtime. Contemporaries like Streetlight Manifesto, The Toasters and Big D and the Kid’s table have managed to make the genre fresh with new influences and challenging writing, but it seems like The Planet Smashers are content with simply swapping creativity for lifelong novelty band status. RIP. GRADE: CMASTODON – THE HUNTER (Reprise) Less concept, more rock JL: Atlanta’s beastly Mastodon are regarded by many as one of the foremost amazing bands within the ProgMetal spectrum. With a back catalog of albums that dig into deep mystic folklore, cross-dimensional telepathic time travel, and even the tales of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, you just can’t argue that Mastodon doesn’t set their ambitions high. The Hunter, for a change of pace, brings the same epic scale of sonic barrage to a concise cycle of riffheavy tracks. What it lacks in conceptual links it more than makes up for in aggression. The crunch of “Curl of the Burl” shows a sturdy footing in hard rock influence. Even Brent Hinds voice sounds a little more like Ozzy than it does Cookie Monster. “Blasteroid” (even the song titles kick ass) brings the guitar heroics hard. Sure, the poetic merit of lines like “I wanna drink some fucking blood/ I wanna break some fucking glass/ I wanna squeeze you till you’re inside out” could fall under scrutiny, but for Christ’s sake (or Satan, for that matter) it’s a METAL album. The complexity of Hinds’ and Bill Kelliher’s guitar work is kept in check with great drumming from Brann Dailor,
possibly some of his most thunderous work since Blood Mountain. The finale of “The Sparrow” adds an amazing acoustic element to what would otherwise be an onslaught of maximum volume. Even in the more somber environment, it still fits the bill for Mastodon. In a time when “progressive” can so easily amount to no less than “pretentious”, this band seems to keep it real, even when keeping it really big. GRADE: B MR. LEWIS AND THE FUNERAL 5 – DELIRIUM TREMENDOUS (Chicken Ranch) Try to outdo Tom Waits at his own game JM: You know what’s great about a musician like Tom Waits? Aside from being a great songwriter, he has made a musical career out of simply doing his own thing, not content to change his vocals or music style to fit into whatever happens t be the prevailing trend (this is a guy who was signed by David Geffen alongside 70’s country rockers like The Eagles and Jackson Browne, and said fuck it, I’m going to use my whiskey-soaked vocals to make sad bastard lounge music for barflies). Same thing with the Boston band Morphine; the group decided to mix alt rock with a saxophone, while everyone else was wrapping themselves in flannel. That in mind, Austin’s Mr. Lewis and the Elephant 5 simply sound like a band trying to come across as odd and quirky, well, simply for the sake of sounding odd and quirky. On Delirium Tremendous, the band’s sophomore effort, they come off sounding more like Morphine or Tom Waits cover band than a group serious about forging their own path. The dozen tracks that make up the record each rely on mumbled, dark lyrics rolling out over smoky bar jazz and hints of polka, but there is little to distinguish one song from the previous one. By then end, you’re just glad the ride’s over. You’re going to have to chase this one with Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs just to get cleanse the pallet. GRADE: C MC CHRIS – RACE WARS (MC Chris LLC) Nerdcore hip-hop for the Dragon*Con crowd BL: More than a decade after Paul Barman set the nerdcore hiphop standard with his Prince Paul-produced breakthrough EP, diminutive MC Chris stands tall as the subgenre’s most consistently compelling artist. Best known for his work with Atlanta animation house Williams Street Studios (including their Adult Swim shows Space Ghost: Coast To Coast, Sealab 2021 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, to which he lent his voice as MC Pee Pants), Chris has attracted a small but devoted niche following thanks to brilliantly geeky raps and sketches about sci-fi flicks, comic books and pop culture touchstones. Race Wars offers more of the same, with his distinctive high-pitched voice and highly literate lyrics putting him in a galaxy far, far away from mainstream hip-hop fare. It’s an acquired taste, to be sure, but should be like manna from heaven for the Dragon*Con crowd. GRADE: B

Parks And Recreation Star Nick Offerman On Ron Swanson, The Tammys & His Refusal To Wax
t’s pretty rare that a supporting character in an ensemble-based tV show breaks out to achieve cult status (see: reverend Jim Ignatowski on taxi, Dwight schrute on The Office). But Nick Offerman’s deliciously deadpan portrayal of parks department manager ron swanson– he of the hirsute ‘stache, government-hating Libertarian ideals, robust carnivorous and sexual appetite, and remarkable outdoorsman skills– on parks & recreation has undeniably made him a star. as the emmy-nominated show enters its fourth season, we recently took part in a press conference with Offerman and parks & recreation producer Michael schur, in which we touched upon topics ranging from working with (his reallife wife) Megan Mullally and patricia Clarkson to just how much of swanson and Offerman have in common. you’ll be surprised… I’d like to start by asking about all the various Tammys in Ron’s life… NO: We’ve been incredibly fortunate with the selection of ladies that have graced our stage with their presence, talent and beauty. I think what the audience will be surprised to learn is that tammy 2, played by the gorgeous Megan Mullally, may turn out to be the most kittenlike, timid women of the tammys. I am about as giggly as a schoolgirl to have landed in a position where I’m portraying a man who has made love to both Megan Mullally and patricia Clarkson. That is a consummation devoutly to be wished. Do you have any idea what people are responding to about Ron Swanson? He’s this grumpy guy who kind of hates everyone. What makes him so loveable? NO: I usually assume it’s my musk that attracts people. I keep the dander to a minimum and I keep it clean, but I use just a little bit of hibiscus oil behind each shoulder. that would be my guess. We’ve learned that the woodworking that Ron does on the show is actually a Nick Offerman thing. Are there going to be more Nick Offerman things that are going to be integrated into Ron Swanson’s character this season? NO: Well, I have a penchant for the ballet, and I’ve been pitching the fellows the whole time we’ve been in production for a ron swan Lake episode. I haven’t heard of anything coming down the pike just yet, so... I’m still having a hard time digesting that nude photo shoot you did with Megan Mullally. Were you comfortable doing that without any shaving or waxing? NO: I can legitimately say that I insist on no shaving or waxing. I think that the emasculation of the modern man in popular culture is something that has weakened our society considerably. I don’t know why a heroic male these days has to have a hairless torso. you know, when I grew up admiring Joe Don Baker swinging a

baseball bat in Walking tall, he was a hairy son of a bitch! to me, that’s a hero. you know, I’m a big fan of your Brad pitts and your Jude Laws, but I’d like to see a little hair on their chests if they’re going to be beating somebody up. Is it hard to keep a straight face with all the great lines you have during the show? NO: In a word, yes. One of the hardest things about the job, when you are working with a cast of ten homerun hitters, is simply tolerating their skill without busting out laughing. For me, when ron is supposed to be unmoved– which is quite frequently– in the face of andy or Leslie just being the most amazing clown right up in my face, it can be really difficult. But at the same time, that’s what makes the job so fun when we do have a moment to break out and laugh at each other, because we’re watching the funniest work going on tV today.

Now you’re in the fourth season. What’s been your favorite episode to shoot so far? NO: My favorite? If I had to choose, I’d probably go with the first ron and tammy episode because it was so much fun to do. But also, getting to work as a comedy team with my hero, Megan Mullally, was such an incredible gift that it allows it to win by a nose in the race of favorite episode. With the Emmy nomination, Parks and Recreation is getting better reception than ever. How does that affect what’s going on within the show as you shoot the fourth season? NO: There’s been an ever-burgeoning feeling of delight since we started production, and it’s a slowly rolling snowball that continues to gain mass and speed. you know, we felt from the beginning that we had put together an incredible show that people would find really funny and heartwarming. and we have done nothing but continue to grow in critical response and audience reaction. It was so gratifying and validating when we got the emmy nomination, and I think that we generally have this feeling of grateful optimism that we tried to do something nice and people seem to agree that it’s working. We’re just really glad that we get to keep climbing the hill, which kind of goes against the snowball rolling down the hill metaphor… but you know what I’m saying. Why do you think people continue to watch Parks and Recreation? Ms: Our show has a very optimistic worldview. One of our themes is that optimism is better than pessimism: That’s what Leslie’s all about, and her character gives the show a warm and positive feeling. Besides that, I think it’s the best cast on tV. I know every show runner says that, but I honestly don’t think there’s a better cast of comic actors anywhere. If you’re a fan of any kind of comedy– dry comedy, political satire, physical comedy or pop culture references– there’s a comedian for you on this show. Comedy-wise, there’s something for everybody.

THE BALLAD OF BUTCH WALKER The Atlanta Icon Retraces His History, From Local Rocker To Multi-Platinum Producer By B. love
F
or those who have followed the career of Bradley “Butch” walker since the late ‘80s, when he was best known as lead guitarist for hair metal band Byte the Bullet, his current success as a hit-making pop music producer seems both redemptive and a bit bewildering. after all, the odds were against walker becoming a rock star from the start, given that he grew up in the small town of Cartersville, Georgia at a time when atlanta had yet to become the music Mecca it is today. his first band with high school friends Jayce Fincher and Doug Mitchell, Byte the Bullet (which became known as southGang after moving to L.a. to follow in the footsteps of their idols, Mötley Crüe), rose to modest acclaim, releasing two albums on virgin records and getting airplay on tv’s headbanger’s Ball before hair metal went the way of the dodo. they reunited in Floyd’s Funk revival, which garnered some attention on the atlanta music scene, but never went anywhere. Finally, they earned serious notoriety under the name Marvelous 3 thanks to the hit single “Freak of the week,” but a lack of support from their label and numerous interpersonal problems led the trio to go their separate ways in 2001. ten years later, Butch walker is arguably among the most respected singer-songwriters in the business, despite the fact that he’s never had another hit single and none of his solo albums has ever charted in the top 100. through a combination of tenacity, talent and sheer dumb luck, he’s managed to carve out a remarkable track record as a cowriter/producer for other artists, running the gamut from alternative (weezer, hot hot heat) and hard rock (saosin, sevendust) to top 40 pop (avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, Pink). that success, in turn, has given walker the creative freedom to release a string of increasingly well-reviewed solo albums. Now, walker has released the spade, his most collaborative album to date with backing band the Black widows. he’s also about to release a hilarious memoir, Drinking with strangers: Music Lessons From a teenage Bullet Belt, which details the many ups and downs he experienced on his long, bumpy journey to the top. we recently sat down with the 41-year-old rocker for a lengthy walk down memory lane, in which he recalled his youth in Cartersville, his struggles on the road to success, and his transition from rock band frontman to hitmaking producer. How old were you when you first took a serious interest in music? I think I was around 4 or 5 when I started listening to my mom and dad’s records– Creedence Clearwater revival, Barry white… the record that spoke to me most was elvis’ Live via satellite album. Back then there were no sony Playstations, cell phones or Internet, so I’d listen to elvis on the big victrola with built-in speakers and look at this picture of him in his crazy white sequined outfit, sweating like crazy, with the black hair and sideburns. he was wild! he had a growl to his voice that kind of scared me, but I loved it. eventually, I ended up getting the back cover of that album tattooed on my arm to commemorate my first memory of music. we moved from Columbus to Cartersville when I was 5 or 6, and
i just love playing Music for people, hopefully Making theM laugh, Making theM sMile, Making theM cry, or whatever... as long as they feel soMething. my second grade friends were into KIss. It was the late ‘70s, KIss was at the height of their popularity with all the makeup and the hair, and my friend brought a KIss album to school. that really did it for me. You worked with Jayce Fincher and Mitch McLee for nearly 15 years, first in SouthGang, then as Floyd’s Funk Revival, and finally as Marvelous 3. How did you guys initially come together? we all met through Jerry and then we started our first band, which eventually became southGang. our singer was taking guitar lessons from Jerry. shredder (Jayce Fincher) played in a band that was called oasis, with this drummer (Doug Mitchell) who would become known as slug. we all changed our names, of course: If Mötley Crüe did it, we had to do it! But we all met through these jazz-rock guitar ensembles that Jerry put together. we thought, this is great, but we should be in a real rock band. we were all smoking dope, drinking and chasing girls as horny young teenagers do. the perfect outlet for us was playing rock n’ roll. I would commute every day to rome. we rehearsed at the Fraternal order of Policemen’s Lodge, and there was a lot of crazy stuff going on. that’s what fueled my fire to play music, get out of that town and get to L.a., where it was happening at the time. there was no original music scene in atlanta at the time– you had to play covers. But we wanted to write our own songs, so we left for La in ’88. You’d already been in the business 15 years by the time you released your first solo album. What was the biggest adjustment of not being in a band with your buddies from back home? when I did my own record (2002’s Left of self-Centered), there were good and bad reasons for doing it. the negative side was that I had become such a control freak that I couldn’t handle anybody else’s opinions on anything. I knew exactly how I wanted to do things. I felt like if I had to answer to other people, it would never work… and that sucks. slug and Jayce were the two core people in my life, who I played years
of music with, performed over 200 shows a year, and hardly every spent a day apart. But, with Marvelous 3, we got into a really dark period. we had our brush with success, but it was very fleeting. I was still young enough to be full of piss and vinegar, mad at the world and mad at the elektra label for neglecting us. I had not been burned enough yet to realize that this was how the business was, and how you have to handle it. we were drinking a lot and being bad to each other, which was mainly my fault. we’re all the closest of friends now, but at that time I think they wanted to kill me and I wanted to kill them. What was the final straw for Marvelous 3? It took an implosion, which was Jayce coming to us and saying, “I’ve got a drinking problem. I need to get off the road. I need to leave the band.” I was like, “If there is no you, then there is no band.” we were the Marvelous 3: there were no substitutes for those guys. that’s how it all came to a head, and I had no choice. I wasn’t going to form another band. I played with these guys for 15 years in different incarnations, so I didn’t want to do something else with other people where I had to have a committee. I decided I was going to do my own thing and see what happens. that eventually became where I am today. How did you make the transition from struggling artist to multi-platinum record producer? Because of how much we’d toured over the years, by the time I was 30 years old I was burned out. I just couldn’t fathom staying in another hotel room, packing a suitcase, eating crappy food… the romance was gone. I was pretty good in the studio, and I always produced my own records. all these people were calling me to do production or co-writing after “Freak of the week” became a semi-hit. I didn’t see myself doing that, as I still had delusions of grandeur that I was going to be some big, famous frontman. But when I got burned out on touring and decided I was going to take a break for a few years, that’s when I had the time to focus on working in the studio, and the doors just
opened up left and right. after a while, it made me hungry to be an artist and tour again. How do you feel you’ve progressed as a songwriter with The Spade? I’m extremely happy about this record because it was my first band collaboration in a long time. on my last record I worked with the Black widows, but the stuff was written mainly by me, with some lyrics co-written by my buddy Michael trent. But this record was the first time the whole band came in with their own song ideas, lyrics and melodies, with Mike and I co-writing a lot of the lyrics. I couldn’t have been happier with the things they brought in, and it sounded like a really cohesive record for a band. everybody has been glowing about the record, and that makes me happy, because I thought that these guys deserved to be heard. Tell me a little bit about your forthcoming book. What can fans expect from that? I definitely had to be talked into doing it. the last thing I wanted to do was write a memoir. It’s not like I have all these crazy drug stories like the Chili Peppers or Mötley Crüe. But the publishers really liked my blog and thought that it would make an interesting book. so far, the response has been good, but I’ve got to say that I’m a bit nervous about it. It feels very narcissistic, but at the same time there are some funny stories in there that are just too lengthy to tell in detail in an interview. What goals do you have for yourself as you move forward from here? How do you see your career as a producer, singer-songwriter, and performer balancing out as you go forward? I don’t really know. I just hope I get to keep making records for other people. I’m very happy and very lucky that people want me to do that, but at the same time I don’t think I could ever give up making my own music, touring and playing. It is good for my soul, and makes me feel like I’m doing something that I was set out and put on this planet to do. I just love playing music for people, hopefully making them laugh, making them smile, making them cry, or whatever... as long as they feel something. PG 23 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2011

GONE NATIVE
Canadian Indie-Pop Band Braids Prepares To Make Its Mark In America By chris Miller
a
mbient indie-pop band braids has certainly done its time. it wasn’t hard time or anything. but it was a lot of time– thousands of hours, actually– spent playing together and developing their sound. That is a lot considering most folks around their age (21-ish) can’t focus on hardly anything for more than 20 minutes. That massive amount of rehearsal has led the band to a point that its peers can only dream of: critical acclaim, international tours, and a sophisticated sound. before all that though, braids’ members just had a good feeling. “Within even the first month of playing it was very evident that there was a really strong connection there,” said drummer austin tufts. at the time, tufts was a year younger than the rest of his bandmates, who were preparing to leave their hometown of Calgary, alberta for college. but that first few months of playing changed things. The elder three decided to stick around for a year and see where this was going. “We just rehearsed that whole year, my last year of high school, and they took a gap year and ... we formed the foundations of our band,” tufts said. The band would meet up in multi-instrumentalist taylor Smith’s garage after tufts got out of school and the rest got out of their day jobs, and they’d play for hours. Then they’d stop to have dinner with Smith’s family. Then they’d go back outside and play for another few hours. “it was a really magical period in our development,” tufts said. With everyone still living at home, no major bills to pay and no creative demands other than their own, braids was free to explore in whatever direction they wanted. “it was just a total period of creation, and it was really, really fun,” tufts said. “We grew a lot and covered a lot of musical ground, and tried a lot of different things out without any inhibition and learned how to play together as musicians.” That last bit, that “learning to play together” bit, is a lot more than just learning to play some cover songs, as is the first big step for most young bands. With hundreds of hours spent playing together over a year, the members of braids got to know each other musically in a way that might take other bands years. “That was the biggest thing that we found out from our year and a half of exploration,” tufts said. “We learned how to write and rehearse collaboratively, very much work as a collective unit with no leader, no front person, so to speak.” it was a slow process. The songs were built layer by layer, with a member bringing in a hook or sound to practice that the band would then build up into a song. each detail was carefully examined
and crafted, and a year later, seven songs emerged that would be the bands debut album as braids, native Speaker. “We have always regarded this record as a whole,” tufts said. “The songs that are on it, it’s not like we had songs that we didn’t put on the record, it’s not like we had songs that we wrote in the recording process... it was literally every song that we had worked on for like, a year.” The massive amount of energy put into each piece of each song was matched by energy on the record (“We spent like an hour and a half figuring out the break time between the songs,” tufts said), which the members recorded themselves. at this point in the timeline, they had relocated to montreal, Quebec. tufts had graduated high school, and the members were splitting time between university and music, trying to focus on classes while finishing native Speaker and playing shows. meanwhile all around them, the already established montreal music scene was experiencing an indie rock rebirth, with transcendence of arcade Fire to the top of the national popular music charts. The town had plenty of young talent that was working together to get noticed, and braids was ready to go along for the ride. “We made the decision to postpone our degrees, finish recording the record, put it out fully, and do a full world wide tour,” tufts said. “and since then we’ve just been running and running all over the place.” native Speaker, released last year, has garnered attention from major music outlets across the globe, and it seems that the bands early effort has payed off in spades, though it’s not an obvious pop music chart topper. The songs run long, often more than six minutes, and it’s not uncommon for a song to be made up of only one or two chords, mixed into a swirl of effects and rhythms. Singer Raphaelle Standell-preston’s voice is lovely, though quirky in that indie way, and she’s not afraid to bark the occasional non-radio-friendly four letter word. Simply said, it’s a new sound for a pop record, and people like it. braids has even been short-listed for the polaris prize (along with arcade Fire for their album “The Suburbs”), a coveted Canadian award for the best album of the year regardless of genre or album sales. With all this praise and pressure, tufts seems to be handling the situation with as much maturity as with which his band approached writing and recording their album. They still want to make music that they love, surely, but this time they know they’ll be playing it far from their parents’ garage. “all the sudden we really have to step up to the plate and make our music something that is much more than just a record,” he said. “it has to be able to translate into a lot of environments, it has to be able to, you know... touch people.”
AMy Afternoon FAMILY AFFAIR With The Girls of Von Grey By sasha DzuBa
R
eCently i had the pleaSuRe of spending time with the von Grey family, including Kathryn (16), annika (15), Fiona (13) and petra (11) von Grey. these four diverse personalities and incredibly talented girls make up the band, understandably named von Grey. Sitting and chatting oneon-one with all four girls. Since Kathryn and annika were born in london, england, there is some discussion of british television, candies, and foods. Besides playing music, what are your other hobbies? petra – i like to build a lot of stuff, i like art and crafts, i like those two things, i like doing a lot of things with duct tape… Kathryn- i like to shop a lot, paint and draw, i’ve gotten into photography a bit i don’t know that many photographers but i do like annie leibowitz a lot! annika – Kathryn and i went through a period of time where we only read adult fairy tales. i read these books called tithe, the interview with the Vampire series. So alice in Wonderland, that whole dark fantasy thing, i’ve always really liked that. How connected are you all online? Fiona - We all have our own individual facebook pages. annika - Fiona does a lot of the social networking things for the band, we have a twitter account as a band. What did you enjoy about your time in India (they lived together in India as a family for three months)? Fiona - how different their culture is, when you go places, you need to go with an open mind, so that you can take away from the experiences as much as you can, instead of just being judgmental about everything. We learned something new, did something new every day. Did you enjoy performing in India? annika - We were all young and everyone was coming up to us after getting onstage and asking how long we’d all been playing together and saying how much they enjoyed it, you were so good…and it was different from a recital too, with the audience not judging you as you step up for your turn but just listening to and enjoying each song…sharing the experience. Do any of you ever get stage fright? annika – We’ve performed in classical recitals since 5-6. it really set the stage for us to continue performing, really helped us get over stage fright very earl i don’t think that any of us get nervous badly before our shows, sometimes we do more for classical recitals.
it (our Music) has to Be aBle to translate into a lot of environMents, it has to Be aBle to, you know... touch people.
What instruments are you currently playing and what types of music do you enjoy playing? annika – i love celtic fiddle. if i hadn’t done celtic stuff, i wouldn’t be able to improvise the way that i do now, it really forced me to step out of classical structure. i kinda miss it some-
times. on piano i enjoy hungarian waltzes and angry dark songs Kathryn – on piano, i enjoy playing bach suites, my favorite instrument is cello, i enjoy faster tempo songs. i also enjoy classical piano. petra – my favorite right now is guitar…i’m just learning, probably about 8 months How has your songwriting process evolved? annika - Fiona and i do most of the songwriting together, Kathryn sits in and has started to contribute a lot more lyrically. Fiona comes up with a basic riff and then we develop a chord structure and the arrangement of the song, i write some of the lyrics and then Fiona and i write the melody together. Then we decide who is going to sing it depending on the range and lyrical content, who the lyrics apply to the most. Is it difficult having personal relationships? Boyfriends? Fiona - i’m only 13…dating and stuff…it’s not really going to be serious…a lot of people just date to say they have a boyfriend, i’m not looking to date anyone who is older petra- a lot of people my age say “ooh i have a boyfriend! yay!” …but what do you do that’s different…you’re still just friends What about friends? petra- i have a couple…i do have a friend who lives close Fiona – the three of us 2 years ago went back to school…so i made some new friends then… my best friend and i have known each other 4 ½ years… annika – the social side is the biggest trade off. i don’t really feel the need to hang out with friends on the weekend. it is a trade-off, you can’t really go to a party on Saturday nigh, if you have an important rehearsal Sunday morning at 9am. We’re all friends with each other. Kathryn – i have some friends from school, not many that i’ve known for a long time, but i have friends that i hang out with annika – i have two friends that i’ve known since second grade, we hang out off and on again. it’s difficult to keep up with how we’re changing. We don’t hang out with other people that much. Fiona - after we rehearse, we’re tired. We don’t really want to hang out with other people, we just go with each other annika - it’s fun to go to parties, but, it’s been a trade-off…but not a serious one for us. We’re not lonely. i have three sisters to hang out with. they play me some of their newest song creations, “Shane” and “Running”. they also perform their excellent cover of damien Rice’s “Volcano”. Check out von Grey’s EP, Make Some Noise, and definitely go see one of the following upcoming shows in October. oct. 1 – bridgefest in the pines, Stockbridge oct. 2 – Sunday in the park, historic oakland Cemetary, atlanta oct. 15 – Ragamuffin music hall, Roswell

C’MON FEEL THE NOISE
The Return Of Punk-Rock Supergroup Noise By Numbers By John B. Moore
C
onsidering the number of other bands the guys in noise by numbers are playing in (see: screeching Weasel, the Queers, the bomb, etc.), it’s a wonder their new record ever got made at all. Comprised of dan schafer, Jeff dean, rick uncapher and Jimmy Lucido, noise by numbers plays a solid mix of punk and college rock that could have easily come out of the minneapolis scene in the late ‘80s or
early ‘90s. the band’s latest album, over Leavitt, complements their 2009 debut Yeah, Whatever quite nicely – plenty of distorted guitars, tight drumming and a knack for sharp hooks. schafer spoke with us recently about the band, the likelihood of another album and finding time to tour. Obviously you guys all have other commitments. Is it tough to find the time to write and rehearse and do all those other things that come with being in a band?
it definitely can be tough with other band commitments, raising families, and having Jimmy live in LA. but we like the music that we make and more than that, we all love playing with each other. so, we try to be as active as we can under the circumstances.
John was great. he’s really easy to work with as well as being a super talented recording engineer/producer. i think John’s production style and the sound of our band was a great match. John definitely brought out the best in us.
When you put out Yeah, Whatever, did you always know there’d be another album? i figured there would be because when Jeff and i get together the propensity to write songs is always there. And they usually come pretty quick. soon after the release of Yeah Whatever we were getting together about once a week and songs began to materialize. it wasn’t long before we had another record written.
What can you tell me about the new record? We have a few songs that are slower and introspective but we also have some upbeat songs that differ slightly from the first record. i feel the recording “breathes” for the lack of a better word, and Jimmy’s drumming adds a color that wasn’t there before. i felt the element of Jimmy’s drumming and John drew’s production gave the songs a great and needed boost. ultimately, this is for the listener to decide but, we all had a lot of fun recording over Leavitt and were happy with the results.
Did you approach the writing or recording of this album any differently than the first one? i try to never force anything or do niche writing. this record was just a natural progression. We took a very relaxed and easy approach to the recording as well. And it was a fun record to make. What made you decide to work with Jumpstart Records for this record? Jeff was the one who came into contact with Jumpstart. From my understanding, Jumpstart heard the recording, liked it and wanted to put it out. There were very enthusiastic about the record and had good promotional planning for both the u.s. and europe. so, Jumpstart was the label of choice.
STATE OF EMERGENCY
How was John Drew to work with as a producer?
It seems a bit unfair to ask you about new music when you just finished this record, but have you thought about a third album yet? i believe we have another record in us. i have a bunch of stuff written as does Jeff. Jimmy also started showing us some cool stuff as well. As long as we can find the time, i believe more music will inevitably follow. Do you plan to tour much with this record? i’m not in a position where i can do a lot of touring unfortunately. the plan is to hang in there and chip away playing where and when we can. hopefully, we can keep doing this for a long time.
Alkalino Trio Bassist Dan Andriano On His New Solo Project By John B. Moore
W
hen ALkALine trio bAssist And co-founder dan Andriano set out to write his latest full length a couple of years ago, he wasn’t even sure it would be a solo record. With hurricane season finally out there, Andriano isn’t even sure it will remain a solo effort in the coming years, which explains the full moniker of his effort: dan Andriano in the emergency room. the record is pretty much what you would expect from Andriano, given his work with Alkaline trio, beautiful, stripped down songs with smart lyrics, dark but with just a hint of hope. on the heels of the release of Alkaline trio’s eight album, Andriano is also about to road test the songs from his solo effort on the european leg of the revival tour alongside Chuck ragan, dave hause and brian Fallon. he spoke recently about the tour, his new record and why being out front is making him so nervous. How long have you been working on the songs for Hurricane Season? As far as songwriting goes, about two years. Awhile back i knew i wanted to do something, i just wasn’t sure what, or more to the point, who else was going to be involved. but i kept writing tunes, and eventually it made the most sense to just try and record them for real, and put it out through Asian man. Have you wanted to put out a solo record for a while now? i suppose, but it wasn’t always my intention to have it be a “solo” record. i’m always writing and obviously some of the tunes i write don’t work for Alkaline trio, so yes, i’d been planning on this but at some point i’d like it to be a band… that’s kinda why i named it what i did, i wanted to leave it open ended. Why did now seem like the right time for this project? i guess i just felt like i had enough time over the winter to really get into trying to record it. i’ve never done anything like that before so i wanted to be sure that if it wasn’t going PG 28 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2011
well, i’d still have enough time to find an engineer and a studio to help me. Fortunately, i felt like it was going well enough to keep going by myself. Plus, i didn’t want to get started, then have to leave for a tour or something and not get back to it. When i get motivated to do something, i kinda have to stay in that mode or it’s really hard for me to pick up where i left off. it’s all about catching a groove.
Were you nervous at all knowing the spotlight and pressure is solely on you for this one? so nervous… still am. that’s a big part of why the recording process on this was so maddening. i had no one to bounce ideas off of, no one to tell me “that’s fine… move on”, or conversely, “that sucks, do it again.” Which for me, makes things very difficult and i ended up doing a lot stuff two or three times. Also, the songs are so personal that putting them out there in any capacity is a little nerve-wracking, but when you combine that with the fact that there’s no one else involved. Yes, very nervous. How did working on this compare to say an Alkaline Trio record or one of your side projects? Well, in Alkaline trio, i do my best to write and complete a song before i show it to the dudes, but i know that it’s going to change a bit, sometimes significantly, so there’s not as much pressure to feel like the song is 100 percent done. matt (skiba) and derek (grant) have a lot of influence on the tunes i write for the trio so i can rely on them to help me finish things here and there, and even completely re-work a song to make it better. the songs on hurricane season are all me, so as i said before, i was super nervous and a little neurotic. And also, i had to keep reminding myself to take my time and make sure everything was as close to good as i could make it on my own. You have plans to tour these songs in Europe. Are you planning a US tour as well? Absolutely, it’s just a matter of planning at this point. i’m going to try and do as much as i can for the next year or so. After this summer, Alkaline trio doesn’t have that much going
on so i’m gonna try and play as much of the world as i can. i’m really excited for the revival tour over in europe and the uk because i think i’m going to have a chance to play these songs with some other people, which is what i always kinda intended. but i’m prepared to just travel around all by myself if that’s what it takes to get it out there.
Any plans for more music from The Falcon? not sure… the Falcon is almost 100 percent brendan kelly and then a revolving cast of characters to make it work for shows and all that. i was really happy to be a part of those recordings, and would do it again in a heartbeat if the opportunity were to present itself. i think brendan’s currently hard at work on his new band which is going to be amazing… And i’m obviously a little busy right now, but down the road a spell i think it might happen again.
TRAVEL
TOP 7 ECOTOURISM ATTRACTIONS ON SANIBEL ISLAND A Modern City With So Much History BY BRET LOVE PHOTOS BY BRET LOVE & MARY GABBETT
W
e’ve been programmed to think that we have to travel far away from home to “get away from it all.” but for nearly 20 years now i’ve been spending a week every year on Sanibel island, an ecotourism haven off the coast of Ft myers, Florida (an 8-hour drive from atlanta, or an hour-long flight). With 2/3 of its total area devoted to wildlife preserves, Sanibel has become a mecca for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, kayakers, hikers, seashell collectors and fishermen alike. With island vacations of Sanibel & Captiva (www. sanibelislandvacations.com) graciously providing a condo at villa Sanibel with a spectacular ocean view, we set out this year to explore the coolest activities the island has to offer. here are a few favorites:
EXPLORE THE J.N. DING DARLING NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
one of the things we love most about Sanibel island is the fact that over a third of its land is set aside for the J.n. ding darling national Wildlife refuge (www.fws. gov/dingdarling). the refuge can often get a little hot and crowded during the day, but its five mile road makes for a gorgeous sunset drive, walk or bike ride, filled with all manner of raccoons, lizards, alligators, butterflies, turtles and crabs. the refuge’s mangrove estuary also provides a safe haven for a vast array of shorebirds and birds of prey, including great blue herons, snowy egrets, white ibis, pelicans, osprey and, our favorite, the roseate spoonbill. time it just right and you can catch them feeding in the shallows at the golden hour, as the sunset reflected on the water and the silhouettes of palm trees against the multihued sky creates a picture postcard-worthy view. Word to the wise: Wear bug spray!
GO ON A DOLPHIN CRUISE
We love dolphins, and one of our favorite things about Sanibel island is how frequently you can spot atlantic bottlenose dolphins there. many days you can see them swimming just off the shore, feeding on schools of fish in the glistening light of the early morning sun. but one of our favorite activities is taking the sunset dolphin Cruise offered by Captiva Cruises (www.captivacruises.com), which never fails to provide entertaining views of our fineflippered friends in the wild (they have a 95% success rate). our latest trip produced some of our best video footage to date, as a small pod of dolphins swam and leapt in the wake of our boat for nearly five minutes. no matter how cool you think you are, the sight of dolphins frolicking in the waves is sure to reduce you to child-like “oooohs!” and “aaaaahs!”
KAYAK TARPON BAY
it’s very rare that we visit Sanibel and do not rent a canoe or kayak from tarpon bay explorers (www. tarponbayexplorers.com) to explore the tranquil waters around ding darling. paddling through the mangrove forests along the Commodore Creek water trail, you’ll understand immediately why Sanibel has been named one of the top 10 kayaking Locations in north america by paddler and Canoe & kayak magazines. anhingas, herons, cormorants, ibis, egrets and roseate spoonbills can often be found sunning themselves in the mangroves as osprey hunt for meals from above. dolphins and even the occasional manatee have been spotted in the bay at high tide, and the still waters make for amazing photographs of the mangrove reflections. due to the extreme midday heat, we find morning excursions to be the best.
LEARN ABOUT WILDLIFE AT THE SANIBEL-CAPTIVA CONSERVATION FOUNDATION NATURE CENTER
one of the largest and oldest organizations involved in the
preservation of the island’s precious natural resources, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (www.sccf.org) owns approximately 1,800 acres that have been set aside as wildlife preserves, including a recently-purchased 28.3acre homestead formerly owned by island legend Francis bailey. their nature Center encompasses 260 acres, on which visitors can walk 4.5 miles of hiking trails, climb an observation tower, see a beautiful butterfly exhibit and get hands-on with a live marine touch tank. the Foundation is heavily focused on estuarine research, and offers guided trail tours, shoreline discovery walks (where you can see the protected sea turtle and snowy plover nesting grounds) and other highly interactive educational programs as well.
STUDY MARINE CONSERVATION WITH SANIBEL SEA SCHOOL Sanibel Sea School (www.sanibelseaschool.org) is a relatively new organization devoted to teaching kids and adults alike about marine conservation. Founded by J. bruce neill, who has a phd in conservation biology, and his wife evelyn, the school offers excellent half-day, full-day and week-long programs that give visitors an immersive, interactive exploration of Sanibel’s abundant marine life. my daughter alexandra had a blast, learning why the island is one of the world’s best shelling beaches and getting up close ‘n’ personal with some of its most intriguing inhabitants, including the endangered snowy plover, sand dollars, bivalves, fighting conchs and a broad variety of fish. it was definitely one of our favorite experiences during our trip to Sanibel.
TALK TO (AND ABOUT) THE ANIMALS AT C.R.O.W.
in the nearly 20 years i’ve been going to Sanibel island, i’ve seen the Clinic for the rehabilitation of Wildlife (www.crowclinic.org) grow from a quaint little rehab facility into a multi-million dollar tourist attraction. originally founded by a small group of volunteers in 1968, in recent years CroW has expanded to include the state of the art 4800-square foot healing Winds visitor education Center, a 4800-square foot veterinary hospital and a 3700-square foot george e. batchelor Student housing Complex to accommodate its growing staff of student volunteers. the facility treats over 4,000 injured animals representing more than 200 different species every year, from raccoons and otters to shore birds and sea turtles. on our recent visit to the island, we were fortunate to get a behind-the-scenes tour with executive director Steve greenstein, who got us up close ‘n’ personal with CroW’s exceptional staff and a few of their adorable patients, including orphaned rabbits, injured turtles and the cutest baby raccoon you’ve ever seen.
VISIT THE OUTER ISLANDS
as much as we love Sanibel, we also enjoy the more remote islands off the coast of Ft. myers, especially Cayo Costa State park (www.floridastateparks.org/cayocosta). various companies offer private guides and group tours to the 2,426-acre park, but this year we treated ourselves with a ½-day boat rental and headed out to Cayo Costa on our own. the 30-minute ride to the barrier island is perfectly picturesque, passing north Captiva island and pine island, with over a dozen dolphins swimming and diving in our wake along the way. Sanibel is ranked among the world’s top shelling beaches, but Cayo Costa is arguably even better, with spectacular fighting conchs, olive shells, sand dollars and more. but be sure to wear water shoes (i can tell you from experience that stepping on the business end of a lightning whelk is no fun), and under no circumstances should you ever take any live shell from the water, as it is illegal and comes with a $500 fine. Fortunately, there are millions of perfectly legal shells just waiting for lucky collectors to find them! PG 29 • insiteatlanta.com • October 2011

alfreD HitCHCoCk: tHe essentials ColleCtion There’s no denying that the films on universal’s latest hitchcock collection– The Birds, north By northwest, psycho, rear Window and Vertigo– are all classics from the master of suspense. and for people who don’t already own the films on DVD, having them all in one collection is a nice convenience. But, for serious film buffs, there’s basically nothing new here: no heretofore-unseen extras, no hD upgrade, nothing noteworthy except replicas of the original film posters. our recommendation? Drecker’s pimp tanya (Jane adams), a hippie who stumbles into the job, steals every scene she’s in and makes you wish the season were longer than just 10 episodes. sanCtuary: tHe Complete tHirD season starting as a web series, sanctuary has thrived on tV thanks to a decent cast, intriguing stories, great special effects and cool monsters. The team spends most of the season looking for this new discovery. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of cool creatures that pop up along the way.

FANATIC get your A Monthly Sports Wrap-up BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS Now that SUPER BOWL XLV is over, football fans can get to the real issue: Will there be a 2011 season? If he makes big shots, you have to go to the other end and stay poised.” –New Mexico guard Dairese Gary, on JIMMER FREDETTE, BYU star and college’s leading scorer

So have money to burn, and it’s time here’s what you do if you’re St. Louis: Whatever [Albert] Pujols wants, within reason, you give it to him. What’s within reason? No idea. The closest baseball has had to a free agent like this was Alex Rodriguez in 2001, when he received $252 million for 10 years. That was $25.2 million annually, and that was a decade ago.
