My dad was a through the decades.
JERSEY BOYS
Even a lot of fans don’t know the actual story of the band, and with the advent of American Idol and The Voice, it’s a great time to see how people became famous in a very different era. Totally, it was a whole different time. People can relate to it because it was just these guys growing up in the neighborhood. One of my lines in the show is, “Growing up in my neighborhood, you had three ways out. You could join the army, you could join the mob, or you could become a star.” And that truly were your three options back then. It’s the rags to riches tale that everyone loves to see, and we love to tell. It’s so simple: it’s four guys just off the streets of Jersey who eventually reach the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You play [guitarist/vocalist] Tommy DeVito. What’s it like playing a real, living character? Have you met him? I haven’t met him yet but I hope to one day. It’s very fun and it’s different than anything I’ve ever done before. You have to maintain the integrity of musical theatre and these are real people, a real story. The show is told in such a humanistic way that it’s apparent these are real people and I think that’s really what resonates with the audience. The show is obviously quite popular yet the movie wasn’t a huge hit. What happened? I saw the movie and I enjoyed it but I just think there’s something about the live show, where so much of the story is being told through
performance in a concert setting. There’s a definite energy between the performer and the audience and you really don’t feel when it’s on screen. That’s the beauty of life performance. And the music is all live, too. It’s all live. Even my guitar is all either live from me or the guitarist who doubles in the orchestra. Sometimes the dance steps are just so crazy, and I’m swinging guitar around, but 90% of the time it’s live coming from me. I play through the whole show and the steps are so complicated, and I’m throwing the guitar around but I’m still making that G chord!

IF YOU CAN’T CREATE NEW Copy a Show that’s Tried and True BY BENJAMIN CARR
O
NE OF THE BASIC RULES IN television and movies is that if you find a successful hit, rip it off. This may not be the most respectable and idealistic approach to art but it often works. Even if audiences say they’re looking for new concepts, it makes good sense (and thus good cents) to give them more of the same. After the 1980s hit The Cosby Show, it seemed every stand-up comedian was given a shot at their own family sitcom. This led to great successes like Roseanne and Home Improvement along with a dozen other shows that we don’t really remember now. After Seinfeld became a hit in the 1990s, another of those stand-up shows (except without a family), it led to other new shows with copycat elements - a group of pals gathered in a coffee shop on shows like Friends, Ellen, Two Guys, Two Broke Girls, etc. The immediate clones to Seinfeld, though, didn’t capture the spirit of the original recipe. Some of the ingredients in other shows were the same, but Seinfeld’s dark, bitter, mean-spirited, selfish cruel streak seemed to die in TV comedy after Jerry and the gang headed to jail in the final episode. The closest we’ve come in the years since was Curb Your Enthusiasm, which was made by and starred the co-creator of Seinfeld as himself Larry David. But this year, in case you missed Hulu’s pervasive ad campaign touting its streaming of the entire series - or the appearance of its cast members on David Letterman’s farewell in May, Seinfeld is back in style. And its dark tone has also reappeared on some new sitcoms.

$
7
Includes Burger, Fresh Cut Fries & Med. Drink Expires 10/31/15. Valid at Buckhead, Marietta & Sandy Springs locations.
The best one is called Catastrophe, available through Amazon Prime. From creators and stars Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan, its premise is decidedly adult. On a business trip to London, Rob meets Sharon in a bar. For a week they have constant unprotected sex and then he returns to America without ever learning her last name. A month later she calls him and announces she’s pregnant. He returns to London to help her through a high-risk pregnancy even though the two of them barely know each other at all. Catastrophe doesn’t feel like a romance. It feels like a chat among drinking buddies who hate everyone else around them. Another show, the Hulu exclusive Difficult People is also bitter to its core. Created by Julie Klausner the sitcom stars her and Billy Eichner (Parks and Recreation) as two comedians who would prefer to spend their days criticizing celebrities and judging people. They hate everybody but they’re really funny in the way that they do. Every episode of the show features at least three laugh-out-loud lines. It’s a terrific show, reminiscent of Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine.

FILM
NEW RELEASES THE LATEST DVD, BLU RAY & VOD RELEASES BY BRET LOVE AND JOHN MOORE
The Affair: Season One Showtime has spent years trying to catch up to HBO. The network rises to the challenge with this sexy, suspenseful guilty pleasure, starring Dominick West as a teacher/writer who takes his family to Long Island for summer at the beach with his in-laws. At a local diner he meets a waitress (Ruth Wilson) who’s trapped in a strained marriage. The two embark on a passionate affair, and the show focuses on the psychological toll it takes. Despite a potentially clichéd storyline, the series is brilliantly written and the acting is exceptional. The Hee Haw Collection It may seem corny in retrospect, but this pickin’ and grinnin’ ode to country culture (which ran from 1969-1992) was a weekly must-watch for my Southern family. Hosted by Buck Owens and Roy Clark, the variety show was conceived as a rural alternative to Laugh-In, with comedy sketches, bluegrass jams and guest performances by legends such as Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charlie Rich, Conway Twitty and Tammy Wynette. This 3-DVD set from TimeLife features 5 late ‘60s and early ‘70s episodes previously unavailable at retail, and includes interviews with cast members Clark, George Lindsey and more. The Last Dragon: 30th Anniversary Edition Back in 1985, Motown founder Berry
Gordy produced a cult classic that was part Blaxploitation, part kung fu action, and 100% entertaining. The story follows NYC martial artist Leroy Green (a.k.a. “Bruce Leroy”), who idolizes the kung fu legend and embarks on an epic quest to find a master who can help him develop a mystical power known as “The Glow.” Along the way, there are rival gangs, sleazy video arcade impresarios, sexy pop stars and even Prince’s associate Vanity as music video jockey… in other words, totally cheesy ‘80s awesomeness.
Mad Max: Fury Road Over 35 years after his directorial debut, George Miller returned to the franchise that made him famous and delivered an action epic for the ages. The cinematography of the apocalyptic desert wasteland is stunning, the stunts are eye-popping from start to finish, and Charlize Theron (as the one-armed heroine Imperiator Furiosa) leads a largely female cast that steals the show right out from under Tom Hardy’s feet. His Max is serviceable, but the biggest star here is Miller, who somehow manages to rival (if not top) his previous career best, 1981’s The Road Warrior. Soaked in Bleach It’d be easy to dismiss this as another exploitative title in the growing “Kurt Cobain Was Murdered” genre. But its theories are put forth by the PI hired by Courtney Love when Cobain went missing in 1994, and he has plenty of incriminating recordings to add reasonable doubt that this was simply a suicide by a conflicted, drug-addicted rock star. In addition to bizarre recordings from Love, Tom Grant has recordings of Cobain’s lawyer/close friend Rosemary Carroll, who seriously doubts Kurt was suicidal. It’s a compelling documentary, regardless of where you stand on the murder vs. suicide spectrum. insiteatlanta.com • September 2015 • PG 9

HE DYNAMICS OF TELEVISION are changing as fast as technology. Cable channels like HBO and AMC have practically cornered the market on Emmy nods. Shows such as Transparent and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are establishing Amazon and Netflix as major players. In an age when more and more people are watching online, what can the broadcast networks do to ensure their continued relevance? Check out our preview of this year’s new shows for the answers… 9:00 PM
SUNDAY
BLOOD & OIL (ABC)
The Stars: Don Johnson, Chace Crawford, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Amber Valletta, Delroy Lindo The Scoop: Johnson (as powerful alpha male tycoon, Hap Briggs) heads up an ensemble cast for this soap opera following a young couple who move to Williston, North Dakota after the biggest oil discovery in American history. The Skinny: The project has been off and on for 4 years now, with its show-runner replaced just a few weeks ago due to the project’s “big scope.” Do we really need another Dallas? (Premieres September 27) 10:00 PM
QUANTICO (ABC)
The Stars: Priyanka Chopra, Aunjanue Ellis, Jake McLaughlin, Yasmine Al Masri The Scoop: Bollywood star Chopra anchors the racially diverse cast in this drama about young trainees at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, whose stories are told using lots of flashbacks and flash-forwards. The twist? One of them is a sleeper agent who will engineer the largest terrorist attack on the U.S. since 9/11. The Skinny: Described as a timely cross between Grey’s Anatomy and Homeland, we’re hoping it will be less like the former and more like the latter. (September 27)
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD (AMC)
The Stars: Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Rubén Blades, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Carey The Scoop: This spin-off of Robert Kirkman’s comic book-turned-TV smash is set in L.A. at the beginning of the Zombie Apocalypse, and largely follows the interpersonal struggles of a family fighting to survive the end of the world. The Skinny: The first episode suggests the show will need time to find its storytelling rhythm. Given its predecessor’s success, AMC is likely to give it plenty.
INTO THE BADLANDS (AMC) PG 10 • September 2015 • insiteatlanta.com
The Stars: Daniel Wu, Emily Beecham, Sarah Bolger, Aramis Knight, Marton Csokas The Scoop: If you watched the Walking Dead finale and have even a passing interest in Westerns or martial arts, the stunning teaser trailer for this genrebending show likely got your attention. Loosely based on 16th century Chinese classic Journey to the West, the story follows a warrior and a young boy who journey through a dangerous feudal land seeking enlightenment. The Skinny: AMC is debuting the show right after the premiere of The Walking Dead season six, so you can bet your ninja sword they believe they have another hit on their hands. (November 15) MONDAY 8:00 PM
SUPERGIRL (CBS)
The Stars: Melissa Benoist, David Harewood, Chyler Leigh, Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks The Scoop: Co-developed by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler (Chuck), the latest DC Comics adaptation casts Benoist (Glee) as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, who must learn to embrace her powers after years of hiding them. In a clever bit of stunt casting, Dean Cain (Lois & Clark) and Helen Slater (1984’s Supergirl film) play her adoptive parents. The Skinny: With all of the various producers and actors involved and CBS (which also owns the CW) clearly invested in expanding the DC Universe on TV, this one seems like a shoo-in for success with the Comic-Con fanboys. (October 26)
CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND (CW)
The Stars: Rachel Bloom, Vincent Rodriguez III, Santino Fontana, Donna Lynne Champlin The Scoop: This musical dramedy follows Bloom as a 20-something who quits her gig as a Manhattan lawyer to follow her soulmate
to LA 10 years after he dumped her in high school. Described by co-creator Bloom as “a dark, screwed-up romantic comedy,” the show was picked up and expanded to an hour by the CW after Showtime passed on the original half-hour format. The Skinny: Three reasons it’ll be a hit: 1) Bloom’s music has made her a viral video star; 2) There’s nothing like it on TV (and early buzz is excellent); and 3) it’s being smartly paired with Jane the Virgin (and appeals to a similar audience). (October 12) 8:30 PM
LIFE IN PIECES (CBS)
The Stars: Betsy Brandt, Colin Hanks, Zoe Lister Jones, James Brolin, Dianne Wiest The Scoop: Described as “a new look at the atypical American family, one piece at a time,” Life In Pieces follows the intertwined lives of three generations of the Short clan. Youngest son Greg (Hanks) and wife Jen (Jones) just had a baby, and as they grapple with the challenges of first-time parenthood, his parents (Brolin and Wiest) struggle to age gracefully. The Skinny: Sounds a lot like a less hip and edgy take on Modern Family. But we love the cast, so we’re rooting for this one to be better than it seems on first glance. (September 21) 9:00 PM
MINORITY REPORT
(FOX) The Stars: Stark Sands, Meagan Good, Nick Zano, Laura Regan, Wilmer Valderrama The Scoop: Broadway star Sands anchors this sequel set in the year 2065, 15 years after the events of Tom Cruise’s 2002 film. Dash and his siblings are “Precogs” who can predict crimes before they happen. He works with a detective (Good) to stop them, while at the same time trying to find his missing twin brother (Zano) before dark forces seeking to use Precogs for nefarious purposes do. The Skinny: FOX is heavily invested in
this sci-fi series, which Steven Spielberg had a hand in developing. As film-to-TV adaptations go, this one has considerable potential for success. (September 21) 10:00 PM
BLINDSPOT (NBC)
The Stars: Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton, Audrey Esparza, Marianne JeanBaptiste The Scoop: Co-created by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash), this action thriller follows a mysterious woman with amnesia (Alexander), whose body is covered in tattoos that the FBI realizes provide clues to crimes that need to be solved. The Skinny: Three reasons it’ll be a hit: 1) Berlanoti’s got serious cred with fanboys thanks to the success of his CW shows and his forthcoming Flash film; 2) Alexander’s got serious cred with fanboys thanks to her role as Sif in the Thor movies and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; 3) their show’s panel proved to be one of the most heavily-buzzed at this year’s Comic-Con. (September 21) TUESDAY 8:00 PM
GRANDFATHERED
(FOX) The Stars: John Stamos, Josh Peck, Christina Milian, Paget Brewster, Ravi Patel The Scoop: Seemingly ageless Greek hunk Stamos stars as a recently divorced womanizing bachelor whose footloose-andfancy-free lifestyle is interrupted by the realization that he has a grown-up son (Peck), who now has a daughter from a one-night stand. Since this is a sitcom, we’re guessing hilarity ensues. The Skinny: We’re big Stamos fans, but something about this one feels very oldfashioned. Still, given the involvement of creator Daniel Chun (former head writer on The Office), we’re willing to give it a shot. (September 29)
THE MUPPETS (ABC)
The Stars: Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Pepe the King Prawn The Scoop: Pitched as a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Muppets’ personal lives, this mockumentary shows the day-to-day duties of our favorite felted friends during production of Up Late with Miss Piggy, a fictional latenight talk show. The Skinny: Though not quite what fans hoping for a Muppet Show revival expected, this inventive left-turn was created by writer/ producer Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory), who began his career with Jim Henson Productions. With interest in a Muppets revival at an all-time high thanks to two successful films, the pressure is on not to muck this one up. (September 22)
8:30 PM
THE GRINDER (FOX)
The Stars: Rob Lowe, Fred Savage, Mary Elizabeth Elliott, William Devane The Scoop: Coming off his career-redefining turn on Parks & Rec, Lowe stars as an actor who comes home after his TV series, The Grinder (in which he played a lawyer), ends its run. His brother (Savage) and father (Devane) are actual lawyers, so he decides to join their firm despite the fact that he has no education in the field. The Skinny: Director Jake Kasdan has a string of stinkers to his credit (see: Sex Tape & Bad Teacher… or, better yet, don’t). We’re hoping this one breaks the streak, for Lowe’s sake. (September 29) 9:00 PM
THE CARMICHAEL SHOW (NBC)
The Stars: Jerrod Carmichael, Amber Stevens West, Loretta Devine, David Alan Grier The Scoop: As an alt-comedy standup comic, Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors) is hilarious. His first starring role finds him on a laughtrack sitcom about a guy and his girlfriend (West) who have to tell his strict, ol’ school parents (Devine, Grier) that they’ve moved in together. The Skinny: The cast is great, but barely helps to elevate the weak, played-out script. There’s more promise here than NBC’s woeful Mr. Robinson could muster, but it’s still mediocre fare.
CHICAGO MED (NBC)
The Stars: Oliver Platt, S. Epatha Merkerson, Yaya DaCosta, Torrey DeVitto, Rachel DiPillo The Scoop: This Chicago Fire spin-off is set in the Windy City’s most intense hospital, where a bold team of doctors, nurses, admins and interns battles a constant stream of medical chaos. Topical storylines are ripped from the headlines, with the expected dose of melo- to the drama. The Skinny: Co-created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead (NYPD Blue, Prison Break), this would seem to be a safe bet for success. But the show runner stepped down in late August due to “creative differences,” which is rarely a good sign. (November 10) 9:00 PM
SCREAM QUEENS (FOX)
The Stars: Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Nasim Pedrad, Oliver Hudson, Skyler Samuels, Keke Palmer The Scoop: Co-created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, Scream Queens combines the creepy, twisted sensibilities of American Horror Story with the millennial-friendliness of Glee. The story follows a serial killer out for revenge on a college campus 20 years after a Kappa Kappa Tau sorority pledge gone wrong. The Skinny: The Fall TV season rarely offers much in the way of safe bets. This is one we’ll definitely be setting our DVR’s to record. (September 22) 10:00 PM
BEST TIME EVER WITH NEIL PATRICK HARRIS (NBC)
The Stars: Neil Patrick Harris The Scoop: Based on hit British variety show Ant & Dek’s Saturday Night Takeaway, this left-of-center series offers a lively blend of sketch comedy, game shows, hidden camera pranks, audience giveaways, guest appearances by A-list stars and musical performances. The Skinny: His stint as guest judge on
America’s Got Talent proved the alwaysengaging Harris is game for anything. He should make a great ringmaster for this circus of shenanigans. (September 15)
LIMITLESS (CBS)
The Stars: Jake McDorman, Jennifer Carpenter, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Hill Harper The Scoop: This adaptation of the 2011 Bradley Cooper/Robert DeNiro movie takes place after the film’s events, with Cooper exec producing and appearing in the pilot. The story follows Brian Finch (McDorman), who develops superhuman powers of memory and intellect after taking a mysterious drug called NZT. The Skinny: We’ve heard no buzz on this sci-fi thriller, but Cooper’s involvement bodes well. (September 22)
THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER (FX)
The Stars: Lee Jones, Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal, Flora Spencer-Longhurst The Scoop: This show from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is a historical drama set soon after the Welsh revolt against English rule (1294-1295). The story centers around a knight in King Edward I’s army who vows to lay down his sword. But the more he tries to get away from the violence, the more he’s sucked back into it, ultimately taking on the role of executioner. The Skinny: Sutter’s brutal style seems especially well-suited to Medieval Times. The only question will be whether Aussie newcomer Jones can rise to the occasion in his first lead role. (September 15)
WICKED CITY (ABC)
The Stars: Ed Westwick, Erika Christensen, Jeremy Sisto, Taissa Farmiga, Gabriel Luna The Scoop: This true crime drama tells the story of two detectives (Sisto and Luna) on the hunt of romantically-linked serial killers (Westwick, Christensen) in early ‘80s L.A. The Skinny: I’m no fan of procedural dramas,
and creator Steven Baigelman’s last script (Get On Up) required extensive rewrites. I wouldn’t bet on this one to last a full first season. (October 27) WEDNESDAY 8:00 PM
ROSEWOOD (FOX)
The Stars: Morris Chestnut, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Gabrielle Dennis, Lorraine Toussaint The Scoop: Not connected with the underrated 1997 John Singleton film of the same name, this show follows Dr. Beaumont Rosewood (Chestnut), a studly Miami pathologist with a high-tech lab who pairs with feisty Detective Annalise Villa (Ortiz) to help the police solve crimes. The Skinny: Chestnut is undeniably charismatic and FOX is pairing the show with its breakout smash, Empire. I’m not their target demo (i.e. female), but I suspect Rosewood will be popular. (September 23) 10:00 PM
CODE BLACK (CBS)
The Stars: Marcia Gay Harden, Bonnie Somerville, Melanie Kannokada, Benjamin Hollingsworth The Scoop: Based on a documentary, this medical drama takes place in an overcrowded, understaffed ER in Los Angeles. ANGEL FROM HELL The Skinny: Creator Michael Seitzman has a string of failed films (Here On Earth, North Country) and TV shows (Americana, Intelligence) to his name. We’ll be shocked if this one breaks that streak. (September 30) THURSDAY 8:00 PM
HEROES REBORN (NBC)
The Stars: Jack Coleman, Henry Zebrowski, Zachary Levi, Judith Shekoni The Scoop: This 13-episode miniseries builds on the promise of the first season (2006) of NBC’s sci-fi epic. It takes place a year after a terrorist attack in Odessa, TX that officials blame on the mutants. HRG (Coleman) is in hiding as a new generation discovers
their unique abilities, while vigilantes (Levi and Shekoni) hunt them down on a quest for revenge. The Skinny: Creator Tim Kring is back, as are original characters such as Hiro (Masi Oka), Matt (Greg Grunberg) & Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy). We’re hoping they can get this once-beloved show back on track. (September 24) 10:00 PM
THE PLAYER (NBC)
The Stars: Wesley Snipes, Philip Winchester, Charity Wakefield, Damon Gupton (September 24) The Scoop: Set in Vegas, this action thriller stars Winchester (Strike Back) as the titular character, a sniper-turned security expert forced into heroic action in order to stop complex crimes. Snipes co-stars as a mysterious casino pit boss, with Wakefield as a dealer and Gupton as a police detective. The Skinny: They had us at “Starring Wesley Snipes.” The fact that the crime drama is created/produced by comic book icon John Rogers is just the icing on the compelling cake. (September 24)
ANGEL FROM HELL (CBS)
The Stars: Jane Lynch, Maggie Lawson, Kevin Pollak, Kyle Bornheimer The Scoop: This quirky fantasy-comedy follows the unusual friendship of Type A dermatologist Allison (Lawson) and the mysteriously eclectic Amy (Lynch). Amy insists that she’s a guardian angel who’s been watching over Allison all her life, but Allison suspects she might be insane. The Skinny: We’ve loved Lynch ever since 2000’s Best In Show. She’s almost always the “Best In” whatever show she’s on. Our fingers are crossed that this one will prove a keeper. (November 5) FRIDAY 8:30 PM
DR. KEN (ABC)
The Stars: Ken Jeong, Suzy Nakamura, Dave Foley, Albert Tsai, Tisha Campbell-Martin The Scoop: Jeong (The Hangover) wrote, co-executive produced and starred in the pilot for this sitcom about a frustrated doctor struggling (and largely failing) to juggle his career, marriage and parenting. The Skinny: We loved Jeong on Community, and he certainly knows the material– he was a licensed physician in L.A. before his acting career took off. But can this rock-solid DRACULA (NBC) supporting actor handle the pressures of playing the lead? (October 2)
TRUTH BE TOLD (NBC)
The Stars: Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Vanessa Lachey, Tone Bell, Bresha Webb, Ashley Tisdale The Scoop: Based on creator DJ Nash’s life, this sitcom follows the lives of two couples— one black, one white— who live next door to each other and get together to analyze and obsess over everything from sex and race to parenting and marriage. The Skinny: As a producer, Nash has had five shows on TV in the past four years, each of which has lasted an average of seven episodes. Honestly, we’ll be surprised if this one lasts that long. ROSENWALD (NR)
A funny thing happens in the middle of Aviva Kempner’s Rosenwald: It goes off on a tangent and becomes a different, arguably more interesting film. Kempner makes wellresearched documentaries about prominent Jewish Americans (e.g., actress Gertrude Berg, baseball player Hank Greenberg) in danger of being forgotten. Her subject this time is Julius Rosenwald (1862-1932), a wealthy merchant and philanthropist. The son of a German immigrant who grew up in Springfield, Illinois, he bought a part ownership in Sears, Roebuck & Co., eventually took it over from Richard Sears, built it into the country’s leading retailer and
became a multi-millionaire at the turn of the 20th century, when a million dollars was a lot of money. Never one to hoard his cash, he began giving it away through the Rosenwald Fund. Booker T. Washington raised his awareness of the plight of African Americans, with whom because They lost of a Rosenwald lot of lives inidentified that disaster, and their abuse by the KKK was comparable it’s become a disease-ridden, crocodile-filled,to what Russianplace. He almost singlehandedly turned the devices from business machines (the BM in IBM) to indispensable personal accessories, making customers feel connected to the company in the process. Jobs’ ugly departure from Apple in 1985 is glossed over quickly but he comes back over a decade later to pull Apple back from the brink. Gibney finally tears into Jobs’ dark side, or at least the corporation’s. On his watch there are backdated stock options, money stashed in Ireland to avoid U.S. taxes, and exploitation of Chinese workers who make Apple products, plus the discontinuation of philanthropic activities; so Apple is as soulless as any large corporation and worth more than any other. After this relatively brief segment Gibney concludes by stressing Jobs’ duality – basically a good man who did some bad things. It will be interesting to see how Fassbender plays him. –Steve Warren See the rest of our movie reviews at insiteatlanta.com/movies.asp

We’ve been huge fans of adventure apparel from EXOFFICIO (ExOfficio. com) since we wore them to the Galapagos in 2011. Now, we pack their Ziwa Convertible and Damselfly pants, Breez’r and Trip’r shirts, and Give ’n’ Go underwear every time we travel. The lightweight fabric of their BugsAway line is remarkably comfortable, moisture-wicking, water/stain resistant and comes with an odorless “Insect Shield” that repels bugs for 70+ washings. They take up virtually no space in our luggage, are wrinkle-resistant, and can be washed and dried in a matter of hours, making them perfect for our outdoor adventures.
We’re not really big on technology, but when you’re exploring the great outdoors having the right technology on hand can be a matter of life and death. The weatherproof Talkabout T460 two-way radios from MOTOROLA (MotorolaSolutions.com) are handy when out of cell phone range, offering 2-way communications with a 35-mile range, NOAA weather channels and alerts, builtin LED flashlight and mini USB charging port… The submersible eXplorist 310 GPS from MAGELLAN (MagellanGPS.com) is an exceptional addition to any adventurer’s gear. Its many essential features include a World Edition map (which includes roads, water features, city centers and more), paperless geocaching, a transflective screen that makes it readable even in direct sunlight, 18 hours of usage powered by two AA batteries, and an ability to record your tracks with “Breadcrumbs” allowing you to find your way back at the end of the day.

Album Reviews
REVIEWS BY BRET LOVE, LEE VALENTINE SMITH AND JOHN B. MOORE
The Muffs The Muffs
(Omnivore Records) Long before pop-punk was compromised in the mainstream by Green Day and their ilk, it was much more of a fringe niche, thriving and writhing within a vibrant DIY mindset. The ‘80s and early ‘90s Los Angeles scene was an especially busy headquarters for short and catchy songcraft, splintered across several variations of ‘60s-style garage rock. One of the most influential bands of the indie end of that spectrum was The Pandoras, active from ’83 until 1990. From the ashes of that tumultuous combo came The Muffs, featuring former members Kim Shattuck and Melanie Vammen. Aided by Ronnie Barnett (bass) and Chris Crass (drums), The Muffs took the sloppy sonic scenarios of the movement and filtered them through a deliciously raw, Ramonesmeets-Beach Boys brand of SoCal crunch. Omnivore, the history-obsessed record label, has wisely reissued the band’s debut release from 21 years ago, as Shattuck and Vammen are currently touring Europe, performing again as The Pandoras. The Muffs’ collection fills a nice slot in the genre’s patchy history, with instantly beguiling tracks such as “Eye To Eye,” “Lucky Guy,” and “Don’t Waste Another Day,” marking the album an essential chapter of West Coast pop.
their newest release, centered around the vocal and instrumental talents of Cindy Wasserman and Frank Lee Drennen, the album finds the two in good company, with a great guest roster of players including Rob Wasserman (Lou Reed), Dave Alvin (Blasters), Elliot Easton (The Cars) and drummer DJ Bonebreak of X, in addition to their own band. The results, specifically inspired by an Everly Brothers album from 1966, is a total delight from start to finish. Wasserman and Drennen’s vocal blends and penchant for slightly quirky roots-rock perfectly fit the material. From straightahead readings of classic favorites such as “Let It Be Me” and “Cathy’s Clown” to the lesser-known “The Price Of Love,” the band discovers the kinetic blend of joy and sadness the Brothers’ music often examines. Sure, many others have covered the Everlys’ catalog, but somehow in the hands of Dead Rock West, the same material bristles with a vibrancy that equals (“Gone Gone Gone”) and occasionally bests (“June Is As Cold As December”) the original recordings. Much more than a simple covers album, every track of It’s Everly Time is a finely-honed tribute to a timeless musical attitude. Dead Rock West opens for X in Athens at the Georgia Theater on September 8 and at Terminal West in Atlanta on September 9.
Blues,” “Midnight Rider” and “Melissa.” The DVD of the live show also splices in interviews with Gregg about the group’s songwriting and the influence of their hometown on the band’s music. A great collection for any fan of Gregg and the Allman Brothers.
My Dead Air
The Thief Who Knew My Name
For three decades now, the Tucson-based Giant Sand have been delivering beautifullycrafted, often heartbreaking, sometimes rocking alternative country. And based on the 15 tracks that populate Heartbreak Pass, their latest album, they show no sign of running out of steam anytime soon. With nearly 30 albums to their name, the band hit its stride around 2000 – with the latest line up reinvention - and hasn’t let up since. Led by the band’s constant, singer/guitarist Howe Gelb, Giant Sand’s sound, much like their fellow Arizona natives in the Meat Puppets, is hard to pin down from album to album or even track to track, but the quirkiness is always just under the surface. In the case of Heartbreak Pass, it comes courtesy of the eerie electronic vocals on “Transponder” and the weird guitar squawks at the end of “Texting Feist.” But the band can also play melancholy and loneliness beautifully, like on the album opener “Heaventually.” Despite cramming the album with 15 songs, the album doesn’t feel bloated thanks to the distinctiveness of each song, holding attention throughout the record. A stellar album from start to finish.
(Self-Released) My Dead Air was essentially started as a side project for Dan Ballard, at the time a guitarist for the band Until June. But hours spent writing songs on the side turned to months and soon he had enough to record an album’s worth in his own studio. The result is The Thief Who Knows My Name, 10 moody, tranquil Indie pop songs that could soundtrack a day spent watching the clouds roll by. The press materials cite a myriad of disparate musicians from George Harrison and Glen Campbell to Harry Nilsson and once you are clued into the influences, you can’t help but hear traces of each throughout the record. Ballard’s vocals also sound a bit like Nate Reuss, subtly powerful. The songs to tend to blend into each other now and then with little to distinguish one for the other, but overall a pretty impress debut that sounds different enough from his his work in Until June to make for an interesting evolution.
Summer Plans Self-titled
Dead Rock West
It’s Everly Time!
(Angel Flight Recording Company) Crafty Americana duo Dead Rock West have been on the national scene for a few years now, and their harmonious and hardscrabble tunes have found a solid niche following. The Los Angeles-based outfit’s newest release should broaden their appeal to a much wider audience if X frontman John Doe has any say in it. The band has backed the intelligent punk singersongwriter on solo tours and now the DRW is back on the trail, opening for X on their summer journey of the United States. (Self-released) To fully enjoy the new record from Summer Plans, the listener doesn’t have to know the back-story of the band, but it helps. Their interesting history certainly explains the album’s concept and content. Kara Lorraine and JG Kemper, both in the bilious throes of post-breakup blues, met at a concert in 2010. As therapy, the pair decided to meet regularly and set their heartbreak issues to music. The end result, several years and many miles later, is their self-titled debut. Buoyed by the past and anchored to an overall theme of cautious hope, the mostly mid-tempo songs radiate healing amid obvious -- and often inspired -- soul introspection. The expansive crosscountry project bridges the lonesome distance between Virginia and California, offering fully-realized and totally relatable scenarios, culminating in a tempered crescendo of personal adjustment (“Lovers, Friends & Ghosts,” “Your Bed”) and, finally, growth (“California Skies”). Gregg Allman
Live: Back to Macon, GA [CD and DVD]
(Rounder) Although the Allman Brother may have officially called it a day in 2014, cofounder and namesake Gregg Allman is still going strong. His last record of original songs came out just four years ago and he continues to hit the road. And Back to Macon, this two CD/DVD set, proves he’s still a top caliber performer. Recorded in his home town on January 14, 2014, his first-ever solo DVD has this Godfather of Southern Rock backed by an 8-piece band, and includes special guest Devon Allman, his son and member of Honeytribe. This 16 song set includes plenty of his solo and Allman Brother hits, including great renditions of “I’m No Angel,” “Statesboro
(Veto) Minneapolis has one of the most consistently brilliant, yet somehow overlooked music scenes out there. From Prince and Morris Day to The Replacements and Soul Asylum, this Midwest musical hub too often gets glossed over when people start ticking off the list of great U.S. scenes. Rank Strangers are just further proof that the City of Lakes can still pull its weight musically. Signed to Grant Hart’s label (Hart of that other great Minneapolis band Husker Du), Rank Strangers plays classic garage rock, with just enough hints of lo-fi and punk rock to stand out from others in the genre. You can hear snatches of other bands throughout Ringtones, including Guided By Voices and The ‘Mats, but they still have a sound that’s largely their own. Tracks like “I See Motorcycles” and “The Box,” though lyrically cryptic are still relatable thanks to the timeless sound. With a dozen tracks here, there are some that are certainly stronger than others, but overall another impressive outing from the band.

ith two vocalists, a keytar and a shared love of classic Iggy Pop, MotoBunny have just turned in a truly original take on pop punk. The group formed in 2013 by merging members of The Love Me Nots and The Wooly Bandits and just out with their self-titled debut on the Rusty Knuckles label. Combined, the group including cofrontwomen Christa Collins (synth) and Nicole Laurenne (keytar), Michael Johnny Walker (guitar) and Rik Collins (bass) have shared stages with everyone from X and Nirvana to The Damned and Pearl Jam. Christina and Laurenne spoke recently about how the band first came together, their shared love of Iggy and being a contestant on The X Factor.

You also were on the first season on The X Factor. Musicians have said good things and bad things about shows like this and American Idol. Given your experience, do you ultimately think it’s a good thing for musicians getting started? Collins: I suppose in part it just depends on what type and what level of artist you want to be? I will say that this business is brutal and heartless at times, so if you don’t have a burning desire to perform then I might not recommend it. All that said the best thing about the arts is that it’s meant to be catharsis, to edify ones soul and spirit and evoke a change. You don’t have to be on TV, Broadway, or hanging in a museum to do that! You can find it in a garage playing instruments with your friends or in a local theatre production or coffee shop, on the street, whatever floats your boat? The best advice I can give someone is be open, be fearless, be experimental, be yourself.
Let’s start out with an easy one first, how did the band first come together? Collins: I think it was inevitable that Motobunny would happen! Nicole and Michael (Walker) are in a band called The Love Me Nots and Rik (Collins) and I are in a band called The Woolly Bandits. Both are garage rock in their own right. So after several years of sharing bills and dressing rooms, I don’t Nicole, you started out as a classical remember who said it first, but the general musician, what started you on the path to consensus was “we should do some music being a punk-influenced pop /rock band? together”. That’s a great question. You know, a lot of artists that I listen to, like Robert Johnson, Big Mama Thornton, Muddy Waters, I really felt like they were living their stories. When they were singing their song, they were singing about what was going on in their hearts and their souls, so it was all very authentic and very raw. So for me, I love connecting with my stories on stage. I think it’s really important for me to find whatever emotion is in those songs, whether it’s sadness or strength.
You mentioned a number of great blues artists as inspiration. Many from your generation might not mention Muddy Waters or Robert Johnson, for example. But you were actually playing the blues on stage with your dad when you were very young. My parents were so into the blues, like at Thanksgiving dinner, they’d be playing Howlin’ Wolf! So I kind of grew up between the blues from my parents and my brother listened to hip-hop like Jay Z and NAS and Bone ThugsN-Harmony. And it’s all been an influence on me, because I can relate to it all. I just love the fact that rappers are very unforgiving, they’ll just take words and make them their own; they push boundaries to express themselves. I love that. Right, you’re carrying on the core of the genres, by doing it your own way, just as the blues pioneers did, many decades ago–and rappers still do today. And obviously, a new generation of young fans are listening. I covered a Son House song, “Grinnin In Your Face,” on my last tour. Someone came up to me, and they were probably in their early twenties.
They had gotten the lyrics for that song tattooed on their shoulder. They were like, “I got his tattoo of these Sun House lyrics because I heard you do that song. And it opened me up into the blues.” So that was a really magical moment for me. Your career has been validated just from that one moment, right there. I know right? I can basically retire after that one!

Epic Rap Battles of History Bring Facts and Fun

HE CORE IDEA OF BATTLE RAP IS NOTHING new. It’s been around, in various incarnations for generations, as (usually) good-natured put-downs, roasts, ranking and flaming, among similar monikers. In the rap world as cited in some circles, it ignited in the late ‘70s on the East Coast. Historic battles were instigated by the likes of Kool Moe Dee and Big Daddy Kane. Decades earlier witty soul pioneers like Bo Diddley also participated in roasts. Today new practitioners carry on the tradition but improv and new technology gurus Lloyd Ahlquist and Peter Shukoff have taken the premise and modernized it to international success by looking back into history for inspiration. Their five seasons of “Epic Rap Battles of History” series has millions of hard-core fans who relish (and commit to memory) their hilarious collisions of notable pop culture figures via You Tube. 2015 NFL FOOTBALL PREVIEW BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
consider us cautiously optimistic about this bunch.
T’S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE ANYONE mentioned names like Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed and Don Beebe in an NFL season preview story. But we have a good reason to include them this year—should the Seattle Seahawks make it to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara like INsite believes, it’ll mark the first since the 1991-94 Bills that a team has reached the championship in three straight seasons. However, unlike the fateful Buffalo bunch that never hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy, these new-look Seahawks — former New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham and a reshuffled offensive line mark some of the biggest changes — will redeem themselves from last year and win it all.

We don’t know what’s scarier, having Graham on the same side as Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch or realizing the pissed-off, Richard Sherman-led D has revenge on its mind.
2. PHILADELPHIA
If early indications out of Eagles camp are true about Sam Bradford playing like he did before two ACL injuries, DeMarco Murray (NFL-leading 1,845 yards and 13 TDs in ‘14) is going to look like a genius for making the jump from Dallas.
3. GREEN BAY
As sad as Jordy Nelson’s season-ending injury is, Aaron Rodgers’ Packers can’t take much time to mourn because they have to acclimate Davante Adams to the No. 2 WR role (after Randall Cobb) and get Eddie Lacy comfortable with being the No. 1 offensive option.
4. DALLAS
The ‘Boys had the fifth-most prolific offense last year (29.2 points per game). We’d say that Murray’s departure would prevent a repeat, but Tony Romo and Dez Bryant have a chip on their shoulders — if you need a refresher, re-watch film of the last five minutes of the NFC Divisional playoff game vs. Green Bay — so we’re not putting anything past them.

Word out of the Lions den is that Calvin Johnson looks better than he has in years, which bodes well for QB Matthew Stafford’s run at a fifth-straight season in the NFL’s top 5 in passing attempts.

In the quirky new commercial for Madden NFL 16, Colin Kaepernick portrays Al Pacino from Scent of a Woman. In real life, if the QB is Tony Montana-cool in the pocket, the Niners have a shot at playing a home game in the Super Bowl. If the offense sputters like Danny Collins at the box office, expect another 8-8 year.

The focus around the Twin Cities is squarely on Adrian Peterson’s return and Teddy Bridgewater’s remarkable poise, which is great because these are the main two who have to do something about an offense that managed just 315 yards per game.

Thanks to a kinetic offense led by Ben Roethlisberger (NFLhigh 4,952 passing yards), Le’Veon Bell (AFC-pacing 1,361 rushing yards) and Antonio Brown (NFL-topping 1,698 receiving yards), the Steelers have found their identity on offense. If they ever figure out what they want to do on D, watch out.
2. DENVER
If this is Peyton Manning’s last rodeo like many predict, you can beat he won’t be horsing around when it comes to tossing the ball to Demaryius Thomas and handing it off to C.J. Anderson as much as humanly possible.
3. MIAMI
Should things keep falling into place down in South Florida — QB Ryan Tannehill looks more comfortable by the snap and DT Ndamukong Suh and WR Greg Jennings seem to be settling in well — we could be looking at a new AFC power.
4. INDIANAPOLIS
Andrew Luck was an abysmal 12 for 33 with 126 yards in the Colts’ 45-7 thumping by the New England Patriots in last year’s AFC Championship. Emerging star T.Y. Hilton and former AllPros Andre Johnson and Frank Gore will do their best to help him forget all about it.
5. KANSAS CITY
Speedster Jamaal Charles declared himself the “LeBron of football” a few weeks ago. If Alex Smith airs the ball in the general vicinity of new receiver Jeremy Maclin, and rookie corner Marcus Peters keeps swatting them away from opposing WRs, the Chiefs will be a slam dunk for the postseason.
6. NEW ENGLAND
If Tom Brady’s replacement, Jimmy Garoppolo, isn’t a complete mess during Brady’s four-game suspension, the Pats will be fine. The scheduling gods have the rival Colts waiting for the future hall of famer on October 18.
7. CINCINNATI
Andy Dalton threw nearly as many INTs (17) as TDs (19) a year ago, which is never good. But with evolving offensive weapons like Marvin Jones, Jeremy Hill and Tyler Eifert helping A.J. Green out, the future isn’t looking so bad.
8. BALTIMORE
Playoffs or not, QB Joe Flacco will garner a king’s ransom when he signs his new contract after the season. We’re guessing that trips to the bank will feel even better if he’s able to lead the Ravens to the AFC title game, though.
9. BUFFALO
The outspoken Rex Ryan has rubbed many folks the wrong way over the years; we just didn’t know the NFL schedulers fell in that category. But with a late-season stretch of five road games in six weeks, that must be the case.
10. SAN DIEGO
If the Chargers are to make the playoffs for just the second time since ‘09, they need the newly re-signed Philip Rivers to be sharper (18 INTs led the league) and the new-look offensive line to be steadier.
11. CLEVELAND
The Browns managed a measly 18.7 points per contest last year. With perennially underwhelming Josh McCown (31st in completion %) as the QB, those numbers won’t improve—even if he’s throwing to former Chief stud Dwayne Bowe.
12. HOUSTON
The fact that bruising back Arian Foster has only played 21 games the past two seasons has hurt the Texans tremendously. If he can come back from a preseason groin injury, Brian Hoyer’s growing pains as starting QB will be easier to take.
13. NEW YORK JETS
On October 4, the Jets take their dysfunctional gang to London for an international affair with the Miami Dolphins. There won’t be enough brilliant Brandon Marshall catches to distract fans from the world of issues on the defensive end.
14. OAKLAND
While the jury is certainly still out on Derek Carr as the franchise’s starting QB, the verdict on the slithery Latavius Murray is that he has the talent to anchor the backfield for the next five or six years.
15. TENNESSEE
We really like what we’ve seen thus far with Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota’s accuracy. What we’re struggling to understand, however, is how the organization expects many wins with RB Bishop Sankey taking the majority of the reps.
16. JACKSONVILLE
QB Blake Bortles’ rookie season (17 picks, NFL-leading 55 sacks) was utterly forgettable. After an intimidating opening four games against Carolina, Miami, New England and Indianapolis, the Jags might need amnesia for his sophomore season, too.
