Glee’s Jane Lynch Brings the Party BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

ake a batch of big-name celebrities, add some wacky games, witty commentary and a liberal amount of libations and you have the premise of NBC’s Hollywood Game Night, a new reality show. Hosted by Glee’s shining star Jane Lynch, the series is a star-studded and often raucous set of parlor games, made for TV. The summer sizzler was created by Sean Hayes (“Will And Grace”), the comic actor known in Hollywood circles for his own lavish in-house celebrity game nights/ cocktail parties. Lynch hosts the show, set in a big mansion filled with couches, assorted props and the all-important bar. Recently, the actress spoke at length with the press about the show, but remained a bit vague on any specific details of the upcoming season of Glee. (Editor’s Note: This interview was conducted several weeks before the unexpected overdose of Glee star Cory Monteith.) What is the ratio between the celebrities and the “regular people” on this show? Well the thing that’s happened on game nights I go to, including Sean Hayes’ at his house, is that it’s such a great equalizer. You forget who’s the celebrity and you forget who’s the civilian because you just want to win that point so it’s everybody playing together. You’ve had a wildly varied career, but

what inspired you to host a game show? You know, it’s funny. I don’t know what inspired me to do it, other than the fact that I actually asked to do it. I’ve known Sean a long time. I have a great time at his game nights. He was having dinner over at my house and he mentioned that his show got picked up by NBC and I said, ‘Well can I host it?’ He said, ‘Well, let me see.’ Before I knew it, I was on board to do it. I love Game Night, and I’m a pretty competitive person at it. You want me on your team. You do not want to play against me and I think that, Sean knew I was very familiar with all the games, although we did create all of our own games for this show, but we used Sean’s night as the template.

Can you give us some examples of the new games, for those who may not be familiar with the show or the whole “Game Night” experience? These are typical game night games, and there are these very simple games that have pop culture references. Oh, we’ll put up magazine covers and, say, they’re all of Oprah Winfrey. We’ll put them in chronological order. Or we’ll put up snapshots of breakfast cereal and you have to name the cereal. Like, is that Captain Crunch? Is that Wheaties? We have these cross sections of candy bars and you have to identify them. Is that a Butterfinger? Is that

THERE ARE WONDERFUL FUNNY, CRAZY MOMENTS IN EVERY EPISODE. a Snickers? That sort of thing. There’s no tall story on this. There’re no Shakespeare references. It’s really all just pop culture. We go into movies. We go into entertainment. We have one game where you identify the covers of People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” covers and you have to put those in chronological order. Is there a certain guest star that you would love to have on the show? We have great guests. We had Amy Poehler and Fred Armisen and Rose Byrne and Martin Short and Matthew Perry and Lisa Kudrow on the same show. But I just did an episode of Katie Couric’s talk show, and she is dying to be on it. So I would love to have her. What’s been your most memorable moment of Game Night so far? Oh man, there are so many! Well, Martin Short falling off the couch every time the band starts to play as if it was a shock to him. Amy Poehler and Jason Sudeikis getting a little bit drunk. There were great moments. There are wonderful funny, crazy moments in every episode. Everybody’s always jumping up and down and high fiving and shaming each other, and it’s a lot of fun. Do you think this show could inspire a good drinking game for the home viewers? I don’t think we could make it a drinking game. I don’t think we want to focus on, you know, taking shots and stuff. However, I do, in the beginning of the show, challenge people in the audience to take a drink every time a particular celebrity either screws up or wins a point. Is there anything that really stands out about any guest that was maybe either really good at a certain game, or really bad at a certain game? Well, Fred Armisen is very low key and that’s deceptive because everybody’s jumping up and down around him. Perhaps you think he’s not very game but he was one of the smartest of them all -- and he was fast. Maybe not a lot of volume, but he was fast and to the point and did very, very well.

Do you have any tips on how to throw a good game night bash? What are the main ingredients for the best party? I think you have to really want to play. And you have to really want to win and not be afraid to make a fool out of yourself, and really get into it. That’s what happened with all of our celebrities. You would see somebody in the beginning, and I won’t mention names, who were maybe a little intimidated by the level of energy. And the level of the volume. But once they surrendered to it, they had the best time. And, you know, the civilians ended up having to do that, too, because they’re thrown into a room with a bunch of celebrities. They don’t have time to be star struck; they just have to dive in. Come to have fun and don’t be afraid of looking stupid - because you will look tupid. Your character on Glee, Sue Sylvester, is hyper-competitive. Are you anything like her when it comes to Game Night? Yes, I am. Luckily for everybody involved, I’m hosting, so I’m not on any team. I kind of see myself as a really good Celebrity player. So yes, I’m pretty competitive during those games. Speaking of Glee, can you drop any hits about the upcoming season? I don’t know anything that’s going on… and I’ll bet you that even the writers don’t know, either. So we’ll see what happens. I know I’m going back. I’m going to be in the next season, which is good. I just found that out. And so there will be more Sue Sylvester, but I can’t tell you what that will be. I have no idea. What do you think of Cameron Diaz being cast as Miss Hannigan? Do you have any advice for her? Oh, I didn’t know that, so congratulations to her. You know what, no one offered me advice and I was very grateful for that. I think if I had any advice for Cameron Diaz it would be: Ignore any advice! “Hollywood Game Night” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.

His memories, plus available historical information, provide the basis for the musical.

The Story Behind Harmony, Barry Manilow’s New Musical at the Alliance Theatre BY BRET LOVE

N THE LATE 1920S IN GERMANY, six young men came together and formed a singing group known as the Comedian Harmonists. For more than five years, they were one of Europe’s most popular acts– Barry Manilow refers to them as “the Beatles of their era, the first boy band”– before the Nazis came along and took issue with the fact that several members of the group were Jewish. The band’s story largely remained untold outside of Germany until the late ‘90s, when a biopic called The Harmonists was released. Manilow’s longtime songwriting partner Barry Sussman was among the first in the U.S. to see a German documentary about the band, and quickly urged the pop legend to purchase the rights to create a music based on their story. Nearly 15 years later, Manilow and Sussman are premiering Harmony at the Alliance Theatre. We recently spoke with the legendary songwriting duo, along with director Tony Speciale, to find out why the Comedian Harmonists’ story spoke to them, how the project came together, and why they chose Atlanta as the city in which the musical would make its world premiere.

Bruce: We realized that this was six young men and the women they loved on a quest for harmony, in the broadest sense of the word, in the most important chapter in human history. For Barry and I, this is the show we wanted to see, and we felt very lucky that we got an opportunity to write it. Barry: The music I’ve created, and the whole tone Bruce has created, is something so far away from anything that we’ve ever tackled. This kind of period music and lyrics was another world that Bruce and I had to crawl into. Tony, can you talk about the challenges the show presented for you as the director? Tony: It’s a very big musical in the sense that there are 26-27 different locations over the course of a 2-hour show. There are 19 actors, with 8 principal characters and a chorus of 11 who play several dozen different characters throughout the course of the evening. So the challenge is, how do you accomplish all of that in seven weeks? And how do you deal with different locations and different time periods and make that into a cohesive whole? It is slightly expressionistic, the way the play is structured. What thrills me about the piece is how it flows. It’s very cinematic in the way that it goes from scene to scene. How would you describe the music Barry and Bruce brought to the show? Tony: They both did a tremendous amount of research, and there’s an authenticity and respect that they poured into every note and word on the page. It’s all inspired by 1920s-1930s Germany, and the music is very specific to this story. I see Harmony as a way for them to flex those muscles that they’ve always had. What’s incredible about the six real men this story is about is that they were able to create harmony in a way no one else could at that time. Barry and Bruce really embraced that, and it comes out in the way the music is written, the way the lyrics work with the music, and the way the underscoring drives the scene. It’s a new musical that has an edge, sexiness and drive that I think is really unique.

Why did you choose to come to Atlanta for this world premiere? Bruce: We decided that, for this round, we wanted very much to go to a regional theatre. Regional theatres are all about the work, and commercial considerations are on the back burner. Barry: We wanted to focus on being artists, and not on raising $18 million! Bruce: We made a list of theatres we knew, whose work we thought was terrific. The one that was calling to us was The Alliance. Normally, this is when lawyers and agents and all that get involved. But Barry said, “Why don’t we just call them?” Barry: We looked up the Alliance Theatre on the Internet! (Laughs) Bruce: Lord knows what they thought... We said, “Hi, it’s Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman on the phone.” They connected us to Susan, and someone must have told her who was on the phone, because she said, “Please tell me you’re calling about Harmony!” By the time the call was done, we had a commitment. Atlanta, and the Alliance in particular, has emerged as a proving ground for shows that want to go national. Why is that? Tony: I think there’s this wonderful hospitability and a genuine interest in new material. People go to the theatre and want to check out what’s happening now. They take great pride in the fact that their city is shepherding a project from page to stage. I think that’s a very southern thing. A lot of artists who are working on projects that have a certain profile, they’re looking for a place to nurture it and see it grow. Atlanta has all of the right elements. It has a smart, savvy, curious audience. They’re friendly, but they also let you know how they honestly feel about something. They’re a good litmus test for testing new material. Bruce: And the Alliance has one of the best track records in the country. It’s where shows tend to get born, and that factored into our thinking as well. But the primary concern was, where can we go, do our work, and get our show up the way we want it? The Alliance seemed to check all of the boxes…

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Creator Joel Hodgson Coming to Atlanta BY BRET LOVE

MONG THE DRAGON*CON SET, Joel Hodgson is a legend as the creator/ star of the cult comedy classic Mystery Science Theatre 3000. But the 53-year-old Wisconsin native’s brand of humor clearly isn’t just for geeks: Entertainment Weekly recently named MST3K to its list of the Top 100 TV Shows, Top 10 Cult TV Shows, and Top 10 Science Fiction Shows of all time. Now, as he nears the show’s 25th anniversary celebration in 2014, Hodsgon is coming to Atlanta for a two-night stand at the Plaza Theater. On August 10th at 8PM, he’ll star in Riffing Myself, a humorous look at his quirky childhood and the creation of MST3K, followed by an audience Q&A session. On August 11th at 8PM, he’ll be performing with local movie riffers Cineprov in a Star Trek improv jam. As longtime MST3K fans, we were delighted to speak to Hodgson about his early standup comedy career, the remarkable success of a show that started out on cable access, and why he loves riffing on movies. You’ve always seemed to me like a shy, nervous guy. Does your personality leave you conflicted about the performance side of Art? A friend of mine made this observation: “Every time you perform, it’s never about you. It’s always something you’re holding up, whether it’s prop comedy or ventriloquism, where all the attention is on the dummy. Even on your TV show, you spent 80% of your time invisible to the audience!” I think that’s true. I always prefer to show things rather than to be shown. You started out in standup comedy and became fairly successful. What made you leave it behind? I got discouraged with standup and Hollywood. I took my act as far as it could go. I got on Letterman and Saturday Night Live a bunch of times, and HBO’s Young Comedians Special. At the end of the rainbow in the early ‘80s, you got to be on a sitcom. I didn’t think sitcoms were funny, and I didn’t want to do that. There wasn’t much else for me to do, so I went back to Minneapolis and took a creative sabbatical. I noticed in Hollywood that the more expensive a show, the more you lose your ability to call your shots creatively. I was trying to think of the cheapest show I could do. I knew the movie riffing idea was inexpensive. There were public domain movies, and they were the ones that were the most fun to watch… especially bad monster movies. One day, the idea for MST3K dropped on me like a ton of bricks. Did you ever in your wildest dreams think this little local cable access show would blow up? I have to say yes– that’s why we made the TV show! Back then, when you did TV, it was

broadcast. It wasn’t niche-y like the Internet, where you put stuff out there and 50-100 people watch it. You made a TV show because you thought a mass audience was going to like it. Now, did I think that someone would be interested in talking to me about it 25 years later? No. Last week, it was in Entertainment Weekly’s list of the Top 100 TV Shows of all time, the Top 10 Cult TV Shows, and the Top 10 Science Fiction Shows. Now, it’s getting clearly ridiculous! As time goes on, it doesn’t seem to be dissipating, which is what’s so funny and strange about it. I don’t know how to explain it, but I am really grateful. In Riffing Yourself, will you be talking about some of your reasons for leaving the show at the height of its popularity? The show really starts from the time I’m six years old, when I think that God is making a movie about my life, and it ends when we sell MST3K to the Comedy Channel [now Comedy Central]. I do a Q&A session afterwards, and people always want to know about that. So I do spend time talking about it, explaining why I left and what was going on at the time. How hard was it for you to let go of this thing that you had built up from nothing? It was a huge personal tragedy. It was so public, and I didn’t feel like I could talk about it because I thought it would negatively affect fans of the show. I had to shroud it in, “I’ve got other plans,” but I really didn’t. I didn’t talk about it until the show was gone. As the creator of the show, I was very interested in it living on. I knew that it wasn’t dependent on me as a performer. It’s taken a long time to deal with my bitterness and anger about it, but fortunately it’s all working out over time. You’ll be riffing on movies with the guys from Cineprov. What is it about riffing on movies that’s so fun for you? It’s just really fun, and I genuinely like to do it. It’s kind of like knitting. It makes you feel good. It keeps you sharp. It’s one of the things where I think, “Man, I hope I get to do this a long time.” I like that it’s our own creative art form. It also feels really unreal, like someone just haphazardly made up this show where there’s robots and you riff on movies and there’s guys named TV Frank and Dr Clayton Forrester. It’s like being on The Truman Show!

The shoes are very important. In the first one, there’s a sequence where she has a bag and out of it comes these combat boots. That was completely my idea. I said, `No, you can’t do this kind of job in high heel shoes, if you’re going to run. If you’re going to be serious about it, I want her to be wearing the right shoes.’ Would you ever consider a superhero role? Yes! A sort of Superwoman, really. But I’d probably have to be the baddie. Have you seen this film with an audience? They really react to your performance. Oh really? No I haven’t. I think they maybe think it’s the queen doing all that, so they just sort of love the idea of the irreverence. They definitely seem to identify with you. Do you identify with your character at all? The characters in this film are old professionals. They are retired, extremely dangerous people with a depth of knowledge and professionalism and world weariness, if you like, that makes them very phlegmatic and down-to-earth. It’s lovely to play that. At the same time, [they embody] the slight resentfulness that one gets as one gets older and people are sidelining you. And not paying sufficient respect to the amount of work you’ve done and therefore the knowledge you have, the wisdom. It’s very annoying to be condescended to by younger people and that’s what these people are all about - proving themselves. As for me, my Victoria is so ladylike and together. In this, you were never suspect they are who they are. It’s unexpected and I very much like that. Are any of your roles hard to shake off at the end of the shoot?

I actually do shake off roles, I never take them home with me. I’m not that sort of actor. Playing Elizabeth I was very, very demanding. Physically and mentally demanding. But I’m not that sort of Method type actor, I’m just not. Which actors from the golden age would you cast in either of the REDs? Cary Grant would have been wonderful in RED, wouldn’t he? Because he’s got that wit and relaxation. I’m a huge admirer of Cary Grant, anyway. I think Bette Davis would have been a wonderful Victoria at some point or other. Those would be my two favorites. I would have liked to see Cary Grant and Bette Davis together. That would have been interesting. Also, Barbra Stanwick, as well. Or Doris Day. Because you’ve got the unexpected thing there. If you weren’t an actress, or if you retired, what would you do? Well, I do love the sort of homey-housey stuff. They know me by name in Home Depot. You have your idea of what it would

be like [in retirement]. My husband and I have been building a house in Italy. And that’s sort of our retirement dream. But actually, whether or not we’ll actually do that, I don’t know. It’s hard to let go of our business. It’s hard to let go of the creativity involved. It’s also hard to let go of the attention that you get. You don’t think that you’re addicted or in love with that attention. You think it doesn’t mean anything to you. Until suddenly you don’t get it! You go, ‘Why isn’t everyone taking pictures of me or asking questions?’ But there is that feeling in the media that if you aren’t in the media, then you somehow don’t exist. So it’s no wonder people are obsessed with putting themselves up on Facebook, or whatever. It’s to sort of say, I exist because I’m in some kind of media. But I don’t particularly agree with that. I think that existing as a human being, outside of the attention of other people, is probably the greatest kind of human existence you can have. RED 2 is playing in theaters now. PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS (PG)

(Preview) While Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series get most of the mainstream headlines, the Percy Jackson books and movie have quietly built a sorcery-filled empire since the first edition published back in 2005. Taking off where the first film epic, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, ended after a $226 million global box-office run in 2010, Sea of Monsters follows Percy (Logan Lerman), Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and other friends as they try to save Camp Half-Blood from evil. The kids’ journey to retrieve the world-sparing Golden Fleece doesn’t come without peril, of course; their action-packed trek takes them to mysterious corners (Bermuda Triangle) and confrontations with horrifying beasts (mechanized bulls). But if this menagerie of magic, monsters and mystery is done with the same zest and playfulness as the first movie, the steady franchise will have yet another triumph to boast about. –DeMarco Williams

RED 2 (PG-13)

 Second verse, same as the first, without the element of surprise but with more international locations. The plot is more cartoony, less intelligent and less necessary, something about a nuclear weapon smuggled into Russia in 1979 that suddenly becomes relevant again. So do Retired Extremely Dangerous (RED) agents Bruce Willis and John Malkovich, who are targeted by assassins from several countries for no apparent reason but to trigger action sequences every few minutes. Again, it’s about the pleasure of seeing a top-notch cast (including Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins, Mary-Louise Parker, Byung Hun Lee, Catherine Zeta-Jones and David Thewlis) provide a laugh and a thrill a minute while having a ball kicking butt amid the silliness. –Steve Warren

R.I.P.D. (PG-13)

 It’s Drop Dead Diva reimagined as an action movie with men’s souls being recycled instead of women’s, but an attempt at a Men in Black vibe doesn’t work because it’s not funny and there’s no chemistry between Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. Boston cop Reynolds is killed by his partner (Kevin Bacon) when he tries to bow out of their crooked scheme. In the afterlife his judgement is deferred for 100 years in return for serving in the Rest In Peace Department, where he’s partnered with and mentored by Bridges, a Wild West lawman whose tour has been extended. Their job is to wipe out other dead souls who roam the earth as disguised monsters and threaten civilization. Boston crumbles like a lower-budget Man of Steel setting when the climax finally arrives –Steve Warren

STILL MINE (PG-13)

 The latest film in the AARPloitation genre isn’t as funny as Quartet or ...Marigold Hotel but it’s worth a look. For young marrieds who have previewed life in their 40s (Before Midnight) and 60s (Hope Springs), Still Mine brings them up to their 80s. Craig (John Cromwell) and Irene (Geneviève Bujold) have shared their 2000-acre New Brunswick farm for 61 years. With his wife’s physical and mental health failing, Craig resolves to keep her with him and starts building a new, safer, simpler house for them, opposed at every turn by local bureaucrats over permits and codes. You’ll share his frustration in this true story, and thanks to Bujold’s perfect performance you’ll share his love for Irene as well. –Steve Warren

TURBO (PG)

 The concept is chuckleworthy: Turbo, a garden snail, dreams of becoming a racecar driver. But there’s not much meat on these bones. An accidental infusion of nitrous oxide leaves Turbo supercharged and puts his dream within reach. He hooks up with another dreamer, Tito, who would rather race snails than work in the family taco business. Each has a brother who discourages him, but together there’s no stopping them. The snails who used to race each other are content to become Turbo’s pit crew, and even voice actors like Samuel L. Jackson can’t give them much personality. Turbo is another animated film about beating the odds by believing in yourself, because who wants to see a movie about realistic expectations? –Steve Warren

THE WAY, WAY BACK (PG-13)

 The opening scene establishes the characters and situation so well that most of the next hour feels redundant. Steve Carell is driving his girlfriend (Toni Collette) and her shy, 14-year old son Duncan (Liam James) to his beach house for the summer. Carell is a dick who bullies the boy he obviously considers excess baggage. We know Duncan will come into his own this summer, but it’s questionable whether his mom will too. Allison Janney has a great introduction as Carell’s free-spirited neighbor (with a hot daughter), but is oddly underused for the rest of the movie, with Sam Rockwell taking over the comic relief function. He runs the Water Wizz water park and takes Duncan under his wing, for Adventureland fans who want another “coming of age in an amusement park” movie. I’m being hypercritical because the talents involved, including the writers of The Descendants, raised my hopes too high. –Steve Warren

 This feast of nostalgia for those who remember the old-time comics strains to double as a history lesson for under-50s who only know of the old Catskill resorts as the setting of Dirty Dancing. Positing that the resorts were the missing link between vaudeville/burlesque and today’s comedy clubs, the film also implies TV killed the resorts; if true that would knock two decades off their supposed heyday. With copious food and activities the resorts more closely resemble modern cruise ships. Ignore the details and a cursory history of Jews in America and just enjoy the barrage of one-liners from dozens of comics and latter-day interviews with Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jerry Stiller, Dick Gregory, Mort Sahl and Larry King. Larry King? Take this movie, please. –Steve Warren

BANSHEE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON Cinemax has never measured up to sister company HBO or Showtime in terms of quality original programming. But this new show from Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, True Blood) is a solid step in the right direction. The story follows Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-con who juggles his job as sheriff of a rural town with looking for his female former partner. She’s living in the town of Banshee under a new identity, with kids and a hubby who happens to be the DA. He also has to deal with corruption, Amish gangsters, and ghosts from his past, with plenty of sex, drugs and violence along the way. You may want to subscribe to Cinemax, but you’ll DEFINITELY want to see this. PAUL MCCARTNEY & WINGS: ROCKSHOW Paul McCartney & Wings should feel dated in this concert film, shot in 1975-76. The smoke machine, feathered hair, and double-necked guitar all scream “time capsule.” But don’t underestimate the timelessness of Macca’s music. From Beatles’ classics (“Lady Madonna,” “The Long & Winding Road,” “Yesterday”) to Wings’ hits (“Maybe I’m Amazed,” “My Love,” “Live and Let Die), almost all the songs still sound remarkably fresh, with “Silly Love Songs” the one exception. Originally surfacing in the early ‘80s, this nearly two-hour concert film has been lovingly restored from the original 35mm film.

THE WOLVERINE (PG-13)

 Taking place after X-Men: The Last Stand, this movie follows Wolverine into isolation. Knowing that he will live long after everyone he knows has died, he elects to abandon society and the savage in him. He’s sought out by Lord Yashida, a man whose life he saved in Nagasaki during WWII. Yashida is dying, and offers him a trade: He wants Wolverine’s healing ability in return for helping the hero to live a normal human life. At last, we see a man feeling unsure, vulnerable and mortal. Unfortunately, the last third of the film takes away from the gritty realism of the rest, but this is far better filmmaking and storytelling than the other X-Men films. –Justin Patterson

WEB THERAPY: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON It’s been almost 10 years since Friends went off the air, and the actors (minus Jennifer Anniston) have all struggled to find fulltime employment. Lisa Kudrow seems to have finally got a permanent gig on Showtime, which picked up her original web series. The show is based around Kudrow’s Fiona Wallice, a wealthy Philadelphia therapist. It’s improvisational, much like Curb Your Enthusiasm, and relies heavily on high-profileguest stars (from Rosie O’Donnell and Lilly Tomlin to Alan Cumming and Meryl Streep). This season revolves around her husband being sent off to “sexual re-orientation camp” after being caught in gay trysts while running for political office. Once you get over the annoying accent Kudrow has cursed her character with, the show’s surprisingly funny.

f it’s Labor Day weekend, it’s time for Dragon Con. The multigenre convention, originally founded in 1987, is a beloved holiday for devotees of science fiction, fantasy, comic books, and many other elements of fan culture. For the uninitiated, Dragon Con was launched in 1987, as a club project of a local science fiction and gaming group, the Dragon Alliance of Gamers and Role-Players. The name “Dragon” for the little club was derived from one of the founder’s Dragon Computer, which hosted a local Bulletin Board System (originally known as “The Dragon”) to serve as the central hub for the fledgling operation. Last year’s convention drew around 52,000 attendees and features hundreds of guests, encompasses five hotels, and offers thousands of hours of programming. It is operated by a private for-profit corporation, with the help of a 1,500-member volunteer staff. The sheer size of it is daunting, and the choices are so numerous, even devoted fans have a bit of sensory overload when they approach the site. Insite, with the help of a couple of Con regulars, is here to help you find your way around with a sampling of a few of the myriad of events at the massive gathering. Rosie Bourne, of Atlanta, a dedicated 16-year-old fan of the event, says she looks forward to Dragon Con all year. “It’s magical,” she says. “It’s so exciting to see all the people who come every year, and to know that they work so hard on their costumes and appearance. The loyalty is so impressive. They stand in the heat and the rain, just to get in. And once you walk in,” she says, getting a bit awe-struck just from the thought, “it’s an amazing place to be.” The veteran of three consecutive Cons, she adds that she also enjoys attending in costume, but even if she didn’t dress up for the occasion, she’d still enjoy it. “If you don’t participate, you can still people watch. I love to go and take pictures of everything.” But it’s not just the people watching, Bourne insists. “The panels, the parade, and getting autographs,” are all part of her annual pilgrimage. “It’s just as fun to watch from

the sidelines,” she continues, adding that this year, she is excited to attend question and answer panels about voice actors, amime, and the cult-favorite show “Futurama.” Seeing and meeting Futurama’s voices John Diamaggio, Phil Lamar, Lauren Tom will be one of the highlights, because the actors “voiced my childhood, basically.” She’s not alone. In addition to a heavy concentration of talent from Futurama, perennial favorites from Star Trek, The Six Million Dollar Man, Adventure Time, and many more will appear to greet fans, pose for pictures and sign autographs in the popular and newly-expanded Walk Of Fame area. Every year, Dragon*Con features many of its guests for scheduled autograph signings in one of the giant ballrooms of the hotel. Some guests do charge a fee for their autographs in the specific Walk of Fame area. But if you are seeking free signatures, those are available, too. All autographs staged in the appropriately-christened Autograph Area are always free. Be sure to get to any signing session early, because autographs are handled on a first-come, first-signed basis. Equal access for handicapped persons is assured, but everyone must abide by the first-come, first-served rule. This year marks the return of Star Trek’s William Shatner, the debut of The Six Million Dollar Man’s Lee Majors, Lindsay Wagner from The Bionic Woman, Malcom McDowall from “A Clockwork Orange,” even voice actor Rodger Bumpass, better known as Squidward, from Spongebob Squarepants, Some of the famous guests can be seen in the extremely popular Dragon Con parade. From its earliest days, music has been an important feature of Dragon Con. Previous years have included performances from Blue Öyster Cult, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Edgar Winter, Godhead, The Misfits, GWAR, Man or Astroman? and Spock’s Beard. This year, The Cruxshadows, Emerald Rose, Abney Park and popular KISS tribute band Kissnation are among the musical offerings that will rock well into the wee hours. Again, with over 3,500 hours of non-stop programming, including a film festival, the South’s largest costume contest, wrestling exhibitions and the self-described “largest Art Show in fandom,” the Con tweaks its presentation every year. First, a new website is available to help fans decide where to go, what to see and who to meet. Presented with the goal of offering visitors a mini “con experience” displayed in simplified groupings to ensure ease of navigation. New for 2013, Dragon Con’s vendor halls will move from the Atlanta Marriott Marquis to the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart, Building 1, floors 1 and 2. This move, planners say, is intended to offer some much-needed room to expand programming space, while giving the opportunity to extend the size of the vendor halls by approximately 20%. Additionally, as a part of this expansion, the Walk of Fame will move to a larger space. Programming tracks have also been overhauled for this year. In an effort to discontinue fan tracks for individual fandoms, this year Dragon Con will be folding programming for Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time and Anne McCaffrey’s Worlds into an all-inclusive Fantasy Literature fan track with plenty of time for interaction and individuality. In addition to the fun, it’s good for the community. In 2011, Dragon Con had a direct economic impact of $40.7 million, according to the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Based on stats from Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business, Dragon Con brought in over $21 million of direct economic impact to Atlanta in 2007, and an estimated $25 million in 2008. Olivia Munn On Her Awkward Adolescence, Rise to Fame, and The Newsroom BY BRET LOVE

ESS THAN TWO MINUTES INTO A 45-minute phone conversation with Olivia Munn, you realize she’s not your typical celebrity, and certainly not your sex symbol. A simple question about how moving around a lot as a kid impacted the half-Chinese, half-German/ Irish actress leads into a series of surprisingly frank personal revelations you’d usually have to be on the other side of a therapist’s couch to hear. Whether bearing her soul or cracking jokes, Munn’s mouth (not to mention the fact that she looks great in a Princess Leia outfit) has made her a fan boy favorite ever since she became co-host of the G4 network’s Attack Of The Show! back in 2006. Her sharp comedic timing ultimately earned the attention of Jon Stewart, who hired her as a Daily Show correspondent without an audition. But clearly, the increasingly busy 33-year-old is just getting started. In addition to high-profile roles in Magic Mike and TV’s New Girl, Munn recently began her second season alongside Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer on HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Newsroom, which was created and written by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network). Here are the highlights of our extensive, exclusive conversation. I’ve read that you moved around a lot as a kid. How do you think that impacted the person you are today? I have pretty bad social anxiety, which I know surprises people. I grew up in a military family and moved around a lot. Kids are hard on each other and they’re not really welcoming to new people. I learned that the biggest thing in my life is knowing the intentions behind what people do. For example, when I’m going to a new school, you don’t hate me because I’m a bad person, you just hate me because I’m different from you. Once I understood that, it helped me get through life better instead of putting it all on myself. You’re known for this quick-thinking sense of humor. Was that something you developed as a defense mechanism when you were growing up or did it come along later? I’ve always had it. It was my way of being cool. In 8th grade the girls were really mean, so I decided I would dress like a big loser. It’s not like I was trying to be part of anyone’s clubs or steeling anyone’s boyfriends, I just wanted to go to school, go home and be left alone. I remember they came up to me and said, “We think you’re a ho.” At this point, I’m 13 and I’d never even kissed a boy. It’s ridiculous! So I say, “I’m wearing a Ren & Stimpy t-shirt and sweatpants, with socks inside my Birkenstocks. This is the lowest I can go. Should I dress like your mom? Because I see your mom pick you up all the time and she looks like a douche, so maybe if I dress like her you won’t hate me as much.” At that moment, all the people started laughing and walked away. Those moments, having to be quick in a situation… I’m not giving someone else the power. You majored in journalism. At what point did you decide you wanted to become an actor? I was always an actor. I wanted to do theatre, but you can’t make money in theatre. My Asian mother would say, “You like to talk: You be lawyer!” I didn’t want to be a lawyer. Then I said, “What about journalism?” because I liked telling stories. I was in Japan for high school, and then I finished my last two years in Oklahoma City. I would go home every day and watch ESPN and Entertainment Tonight. When I went into

journalism, my dream was to be on a soap opera, and then do football sideline reporting once the season started. I got a job at OU and I was one of the only females in the press conferences and on the field during that time. ESPN came around all the time and I eventually made some connections and found my way out to California. Eventually I started auditioning for commercials, and here I am.

What was working on The Daily Show like for you? I had just gotten my NBC show, Perfect Couples, and I heard that Jon Stewart wanted to meet with me. The next day I got the call that he wanted me to be a new Daily Show correspondent, and NBC was really gracious and allowed me to do both at the same time. I was on my way to do my first field piece, and then to do my first fitting for NBC, and I remember sitting on the plane right as we started to take off. I put my sunglasses on and just cried out of happiness. It was the first time in my life I ever allowed myself to be so overwhelmed with emotion over what I was able to accomplish. For people who haven’t seen the show, what can you tell us about your role on The Newsroom? Jeff Daniels is the lead, and he plays a Keith Olbermann-like nightly newsman who has huge ratings, but never does anything controversial until he has a certain breakthrough moment in his life. The show is about a man who is very successful and loved, but who is challenging the way we all think. I play Sloan, the financial analyst on the same network as Jeff Daniels’ character. I remember when I read the script, I realized there is something so melodic, enchanting and charismatic about the way Sorkin writes. What does the future hold for your career? In two years, if I’m still on The Newsroom, I’m still getting to do movies and putting out books, I’m proud of my work, spending time with my fans and saying thank you… I will be very happy. I have a goal, but I’m afraid that if I say it out loud somebody might snatch it away or tell me that it’s a silly dream. So I keep my dreams to myself. Darryl Jenifer On Racism, the Legendary Bad Brains & His New Project, White Mandingos discuss Bad Brains as well, including the crucial question of if, and when, the band will get back together.

OR MORE THAN 35 YEARS NOW, bassist Darryl Jenifer has been best known as one-fourth of legendary hardcore punk band Bad Brains. As it so happens, one of the first concerts I ever attended was a Bad Brains show at the Metroplex in Atlanta (with DDT and Neon Christ) circa 1984. Like many kids discovering punk rock for the first time, I was blown away by the band; by their blend of punk and reggae with funk and jazz influences; and by the way their manic energy incited the crowd into one of the most turbulent mosh pits I’ve ever witnessed. That show changed my life, sealing my interest in and passion for alternative culture. It’s ironic, then, that the first time I get to talk to Jenifer, he’s actually promoting a different band. We were ostensibly talking about the White Madingos, the bassist’s progressive punk/hip-hop hybrid with underground MC Murs on vocals and ego trip co-founder Sacha Jenkins on guitar. Their debut album, The Ghetto Is Tryna Kill Me, is an ambitious concept album that explores what it means to be black, and outside the narrowly defined box of what “blackness” is, in America. But, of course, we found plenty of time to

When you started out with Bad Brains, was it difficult to find an audience because you weren’t straight-up punk? When the Brains were starting out, it was a teenage thing. You don’t really care what people say about what you’re doing, which is a blessing, being naïve. I grew up listening to fusion and funk. Me, Doc, and Earl, when we found out about punk, we thought it was cooler than other forms of music. So we wanted to create our own way of kickin’ it. It’s just about being creative, inventive and brave. We didn’t sit around and decide that we were going to be brave. It’s just the way the Great Spirit had it set up for us to have that natural adventure with the music. What was it like being a black band in a genre dominated by white people? Bad Brains never really had to deal with racism. We had tunnel vision for the youth movement of ‘80s hardcore punk. They all wanted to be different. They didn’t want to be pigeonholed. When I was in my early 20s, I was color blind. It’s only now, when people ask me about it, that I feel like the Great Spirit protected us from dealing with

In all the years I’ve been with Bad Brains, maybe 3 or 4 times someone said “nigger” or had a problem with us. A lot of times, those people are real ignorant, but they grow out of it. People will come up and thank me, because they were a racist asshole, and now they’ve got kids and they’re not like that anymore. The Great Spirit works in mysterious ways through this Bad Brains group. I’ve learned you don’t judge a book by its cover: Just because you’re a skinhead doesn’t mean you’re a racist; you see a cat with dreads, and it doesn’t mean that he’s a rasta. Tell me how the White Mandingos project came together. Sacha wanted to interview me, so we met. He wanted me to get a deal on Rawkus Records. We became buddies, hanging out, and it turned out he plays guitar. He started looking at me like we was on some little brother/big brother shit. He was really into rock and rap, but I’d always tease him and tell him to play some Earth, Wind & Fire. There is a lot of syncopated rock-rap shit that isn’t that cool, so I wanted ours to be almost like the pogo-style or black emo shit. The song “My Weapon,” for instance, is very emotional, deep, and expresses urgency. How did you bring Murs into the picture? We were originally working with another MC, and he wanted to do his own thing. Me and Sacha kept the idea, and one day he said, “Yo, check out this kid.” I hadn’t heard of him, but I love to see any youth step up and do cool stuff. Murs is a genius, and I couldn’t believe that I didn’t know he was so proficient. I’m a little o.g. with this shit: The rappers I knew back in the day became stars playing cops on TV. I’m amazed at how the hip-hop culture has evolved into these poets. My man Murs doesn’t do a lot of takes. He knows what he wants to do, he does it, and he owns it. That’s what I’m talking about! Did you talk about any of the content you wanted to address on the album, or was that all Murs? We knew we wanted to make a concept album, which was partly inspired by Coheed & Cambria. We decided to make our album about the story of [black punkrocker] Tyrone White, with his trials and tribulations. From that concept, the whole music started coming together organically. There was not a lot of sitting around

and talking about this and that with the music. It’s more about kicking it, doing it, recognizing what’s hot about it, trimming it up and giving it to the dude. It’s all about having a clear vision and execution versus futzing around, trying to figure out the “this and that” of the production. It’s a coin toss when you work like that. A lot of times it could suck, but sometimes you get the best shit ever. I know Bad Brains has had good times and bad times over the years, and is currently on hiatus. Is the band going to keep going in some capacity? The Brains have a life of their own. I can’t sit around and predict what that’s going to do. It’s my whole life. We took a little hiatus because HR was having some headaches and compounding issues. It was time for us to settle down, and take some time to focus. We went 30-something years, hard like soldiers. This is the first time we came off the road or out of production to rest up and heal up. If it is time for us to return to active duty, just like a solider, we’ll be ready. Maybe the general may say, You guys need to retire.” Or the general may say, “We need guys like you in the battlefield!” I can say that I’m always ready to kick it with my green bass and my progressive ideas. Have you gotten enough out of the White Mandingos’ creative process that you’re interested in exploring it further? The Great Sprit works in mysterious ways. I’m a spiritual cat, not a religious cat, so you’re going to hear me talk about the Great Sprit a lot. We had a series of shows that didn’t want to happen. But the one show that happened was in a New York museum. We played off the flat floor, with some tiny little amps, and I thought it was dope. When it was over, I looked back and was like, “Damn, THIS is how you’re supposed to be when you play a first gig!” It’s been a minute since I had a first gig, ya know? To answer your question, I can’t wait to get back up there, especially in front of a PA. Murs is a tight, bona fide frontman. HR is the only other guy I’ve worked with who’s real like that. Murs owns his slot as an MC, and I was very impressed. He knows what he’s going to do, and he knocks it out, for real. I love that. I love people whose soul is for the music. You got to step up on stage and express yourself at any cost.

Philips Arena Canadian pop/r&b singer, Justin Bieber, initially gained attention through his own postings and performances on YouTube. After a meeting with Usher (here in Atlanta no less), Bieber was signed. Now, you probably can’t turn in any direction without being blinded by an explosion of his brylcreme hair and smiles. Clever marketing through use of viral videos helped Beiber reach massive appeal and success, even before he was signed. His album “Believe” incorporates a more mature sound with elements of club, dancepop, and R&B, his album features a number of guest contributors including Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, and Big Sean. Continuing his spectacular “Believe” tour, the Beib will descend like an angel and will keep you hypnotized with his tight dance moves, emotive voice, along with the lasers, spotlights, and pyrotechnics. Sweeping back his previously suffocating coif, it’s time to take him seriously. Beiber is a R&B pop-star to be reckoned with.

HE GUYS IN VIRGINIA BEACH’S TURNOVER don’t have a ton of releases under their belts yet– just an EP and a split single. But if their debut full-length is any indication, they plan to be around for a long time. Sounding like a veteran act that’s been refining their sound for years, the band blends shimmering guitars and frontman Austin Getz’s subtle, but powerful delivery, locking in its place on “best of” lists across the Internet. Bassist Danny Dempsey spoke recently about the record, the upcoming tour and why they’re not exactly raking in the cash (yet). You guys are based out of Virginia Beach. What’s the music scene like?

the most emotionally impactful emo albums in years, and you can say you discovered them before anybody else knew who they were.

The scene was really great a few years ago, but things have been slowing down a lot. In the last few years a lot of venues have closed, and a lot of people have stopped caring, which has resulted in shows not coming through as often. It’s really sad, but it takes more than one person to keep something like this alive and thriving. Did you find this album tougher to write compared to your EP? For our EP and split we didn’t really have anything else going on in life to keep us from writing whenever we wanted. After the split came out, we started to tour full time and we quickly saw how tough it was to stay motivated to write together when we were home. Another big obstacle that came with this record was our guitar player, Kyle (Kojan), being in school two hours away. A lot of the songwriting was done by sending videos back and forth through e-mails. It was definitely more stressful, but we’re happy with the way it turned out. Can you talk a little bit about the songs on Magnolia? I’d definitely say we took the band in a new direction with some of the songs. We really wanted to prove to people that we’re not just another pop-punk band singing about girls and writing countless fast songs. The response to the change has been a lot better than we expected. Some people hate it, but whatev… You guys just announced a bunch of dates with Koji. Have you played shows with him before? Do you know what to expect? We’ve known Koji for a while now. I think I first met

him a few years back when we played a show with him in our hometown. You can never really know what to expect when you’re on tour with the same people for two months straight. Anything can happen. We definitely have a lot in common with him ,so I think it will be a blast. We’ve already talked about doing a bunch of hiking and camping when we can. We’ve known Ivy League for a few years now as well, and they’re our homies. It’s going to be a really fun tour. Is it difficult for you guys to be able to take time out to tour? Not really. To be honest, we’ve pretty much put everything in our lives on hold to do the band. I personally haven’t had a job since last June. It’s crazy to think about. If we weren’t touring and doing band stuff, I’d be going crazy. Financially, how difficult is it to tour nowadays? I wouldn’t really say it’s difficult, but it’s not easy. We’re not really losing money in any way, but we sure as shit aren’t making money. We’ve been pretty fortunate to not have to put our personal money into covering gas or anything like that. We make enough to pay for gas, eat food, pay bills, and stay out of debt. Sometimes we’ll go see a movie or get something fancy to eat. What’s next for the band? We’re really hoping to head overseas and play in some different parts of the world. We’ll probably start writing new songs again soon. Maybe we’ll make another music video? I don’t know. We’re not that band that plans things out months and months in advance. We just have fun and do whatever comes at us. Check out all the crazy Run For Cover Records releases coming out this year. ATO UNCHAINED Django Unchained Actor Ato Essandoh Turns to TV in Copper BY JUSTIN PATTERSON

NOWN FOR HIS ROLES IN SUCH films as Django Unchained and Blood Diamond, actor and writer Ato Essandoh’s exposure continues to grow with the second season premiere of BBC America’s drama Copper. Essandoh plays Dr. Matthew Freeman, a black doctor in New York’s Five Points neighborhood in the 1860s. INsite was able to spend time with him, talking about life choices, roles and attitude.

The Dean’s List CLAY HARPER – Old Airport Road (Terminus) The return of an Atlanta alt-rock legend BL: Though best known these days for his Fellini’s and La Fonda Latina restaurant chains, Clay Harper also played an influential role in Atlanta’s alt-rock scene, first with iconic ‘80s band The Coolies and later alongside Rob Gal (now better known for producing Sugarland) in Ottoman Empire. Old Airport Road marks his first new album in over a decade. But, if the endless stream of expletives that blues belter Sandra Hall utters on the funky opener “Ole Ray” is any indication, he hasn’t lost any of his counter-culture edge in the interim. Harper handles vocals himself on the laidback shuffle of “Roly Poly,” the horn-laden balladry of “Beautiful,” and the bluesy closer, “They Played Amazing Grace.” But half the album finds him sharing the spotlight with a diverse variety of special guests. The hiphop-influenced “Get That Money” features a brief appearance by female MC Slim Red; the haunting title track features Errol Moore on vocals and Glenn Phillips on guitar; and the skronking “I Can Find You At the Airport” features spoken word by ATL legend Colonel Bruce Hampton. Still, despite the disparate vocalists and genres explored, Old Airport Road almost feels like a concept album, with beautiful songs that explore the seedy underbelly of 21st century city life. In short, it was well worth the wait. I CAN LICK ANY SONOFABITCH IN THE HOUSE – Mayberry (Sad Crow) Northwest cow-punks hitting their stride JM: In addition to having one of the best band names going right now, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House also has the musical chops to back up their in-your-face moniker. With Mayberry, their fifth studio album, these Portland boys can easily have you believing that’s actual Texas dust on their boots (to be fair, I think at least one of the members did actually call the Lone Star State home for a while). Their latest is a complex blend of alt-country and punk rock, which is kind of like pairing a faded Clash t-shirt with a pair of hole-in-the-bottom, duck-taped Justin boots. The opening title track is decent enough, if a little rambling, but it’s the songs that follow that remind you why these guys are among the best at what they do (right up there alongside Lucero, the Old 97’s and Supersuckers). Lyrically, Michael Dean Damron has always been impressive, cramming their records with the kinds of lines other bands go their

whole careers wishing they’d written. This album is no different: “Me and Judas got the shit end of the deal/like any good soldiers, there’s folks to be killed,” he croons on “Liars,” while on “From Bad to Worse” he sings, “Don’t give that Redneck a beer/David Allen Coe is all the boy will want to hear.” After listening to the baker’s dozen of songs that make up Mayberry, you’ll be knocking back the long necks and looking for the next fight to pick. You may get your ass kicked, but at least you’ll have the perfect soundtrack to go with the punches. LOVERS WITHOUT BORDERS – Detective (K Records) Auspicious indie-pop debut LVS: From the fringes of the International P o p Underground comes the debut 7” from Lovers Without Borders, a pop trio featuring Karl Blau (saxophone, vocals), Alex Parrish (guitar) and Jessica Bonin (vocals, drums). Formed as a reaction to a wedding party, the trio– which is anchored by the beat of Bonin’s tiny drum kit– takes the usual K Records mindset and adds a delicate pop flourish. “2nd Most Beautiful Girl In The World” (which, fittingly, is the second track), written by K mainstay Lois Maffeo, gets a brazenly pop spin. “My Harem Shall All Have Hashbrowns,” which would be good for the title alone, swings with loose harmonies and Blau’s sinewy sax. The garage rockin’ “Eddy” echoes the ‘60s with a decidedly modern slant, rounding out the 4-song platter. Worth seeking out at retail or via mail order, the record’s deceptively low-key melodies and clever lyrics marks it as one of the best new releases of the year. The promise of a full album to come from the band is anticipation at its very best.

Rest of the Class THE BLOW MONKEYS – Feels Like a New Morning (Cherry Red) ‘80s New Wave band struggles to remain relevant JM: It’s been about six years now since The Blow Monkeys (once one of the brightest spots on the ‘80s New Wave scene) reunited, and the band has certainly been making up for lost time. Feels Like a New Morning marks the band’s fourth release since getting back on the bike. And, while they have settled into a much more mellow vibe, they have likely aged right alongside their core fans. It’s clear the band pretty much stopped listening to new music right around the time they first called it quits in 1990. This latest

record is pretty uneven, vacillating between decent songs (“Said Too Much” and “Icarus in Flames”) and just plain boring ditties (“Chained” and “Feels Like a New Morning”). The CD also comes with a solo acoustic record from frontman Dr. Robert, playing 10 unplugged versions of the band’s best-known songs (like “Digging Your Scene,” “It Doesn’t have to Be This Way” and “Springtime for the World”). Of the two, the solo disc is definitely the one worth keeping. (C) THE GREENS – Serial Killer W/A Heart of Gold (Self-Released) Experimental singer/songwriter shows promise BL: Kellan Meador is best known as a playful jester on Atlanta’s improv comedy scene. But all it takes is one listen to “Landry”– the hypnotic, echoing, piano instrumental that opens his debut album as The Greens– to realize that the guy is decidedly more serious about his music. “Stay” reveals a dramatic, theatrical voice that falls somewhere between Rufus Wainwright and Depeche Mode, building to a dynamic crescendo of lovelorn emotion. “Got Something” brings electric organ and subtle percussion into the mix, giving a catchy melody that could easily be a modern-day pop song a more retro, almost jazzy feel. At times, Meador’s experimental tendencies get the better of him, with “Well” approaching Steve Reich territory and the droning “Hurricane & Sea” bordering on monotony. But when the groove, melody and passionate vocals all click together, as they do on “Fountain,” the results show plenty of promise. It will be interesting to watch where Meador’s arty aural experiments lead him next. (B-) DOYLE WOLFGANG VON FRANKENSTEIN – Abominator (Monsterman) Am I evil? Yes, I am LVS: Cartoonish and helldwelling punk guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein’s new album f e a t u r e s luminaries Alex Story (Cancerslug) on vocals, “Left-Hand” Graham on bass, and Dr. Chud (Misfits) on drums. With Abominator, the former Misfits guitarist has crafted a riveting and thoroughly unsettling narrative, framing the songs around Story’s shrill vocals. The first single, “Valley Of Shadows,” has been creeping around the horror metal scene for a few months, but the full album fleshes out the details. The prerequisite brooding imagery outlines the basis of a depraved love story. The tracks dwell on murder, disembowelment, necrophilia and other pleasant and uplifting tales of the macabre. Obviously, the horror metal genre will embrace the grotesque epic, which features a number of grindingly horrific and oddly catchy melodies and hooks. All the expected tales come to life (… er, death), with standout cuts including the riveting title track and the effectively moody shadows of the growl on “Land Of The Dead” and “Love Like Murder.” On

this volume, he takes the horror factor to a new level, leaving the Misfits legacy behind and taking the listener even further down into the bowels of the depraved human condition. Recommended for darker-minded Dragon*Con fans and lovers of undiluted evil in general. (B) PHOTON BAND – Pure Photonic Matter, Volume 1 (Nod & Smile/MVD Audio) Solid release from Philly’s psychedelic indie-rockers JM: Psychedelic indie-ro ckers the Photon Band have been at it since the early ‘90s, and they remain just as hard to categorize as they’ve ever been. Sounding like the MC5 on one track and The Smithereens on the next, the band seamlessly skips from one genre to the next. Their latest album starts off with “What You See,” a swirl of electronic noise and what sounds like a creepy child’s voice counting that segues into a “Kick Out the Jams”-worthy drum beat topped with Beatles-esque vocals. Therein lies the charm of this band, which features members of Lilys and War on Drugs: There’s something for everyone. You ultimately get the feeling that they could not care less if others are along for the ride or not. They’re simply playing music that they enjoy, be it a radio friendly sing-along or a Syd Barrett-inspired psychedelic gumbo. (B) PUBLIC ENEMY– Planet Earth: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Greatest Rap Hits (MVD Audio) Best-of collection for one of hip-hop’s greatest acts JM: I’m not going to wade into the debate of whether or not Public Enemy actually belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (they do). But their recent induction is obviously the impetus behind this new collection of re-mastered hits. And if it took a Hall of Fame induction to get these songs on vinyl again? Well, hell, it was worth it. Yes, it’s frustrating that only 11 songs from their expansive catalogue are represented here, and that it largely ignores their revolutionary first two albums (what, no love for the groundbreaking It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back?). But there is not a single track on this record that doesn’t deserve to be here. From the stellar opener, “Welcome to the Terrordome,” to the triumphant “Fight the Power,” there is no filler at all on this album. Lyrically, the band could not be touched, deftly rapping about politics and social issues, and coming out with some of the most original samples of their era. At a time when the genre seems to focus way too much on shout outs to luxury brands, a song like “By the Time I get to Arizona”– still remarkably relevant even now, decades later– rings out like a clarion call for progressive action. Though it may have its faults, Planet Earth is still a superb celebration of one of the most important bands to come out of the ‘90s… in any genre. (A) insiteatlanta.com • August 2013 • PG 23

What people have to remember is that we really only competed as an FCS team for one year and played in the Colonial (CAA) for one year so, when you’re watching us play, we’re probably closer in talent to those teams. Or at least they told me they were likely to grant me an interview. Over the course of six months, we went back and forth over emails. I gave them my list of questions, which is something you usually never do in a documentary. But that’s how badly I wanted them to have a voice in this film. Eventually they declined. Did they give you a reason? I’m exposing things in this film that Sea World has successfully kept under wraps for 40 years. They certainly don’t want to acknowledge that some of these things happen, let alone talk about them and examine why they happen. The more I learned about what that park has been doing, the more I came to understand that they wouldn’t talk to me. Talk to me about Sea World’s statement, refuting many of the film’s facts, which came out last week. It’s old fashioned damage control. What’s interesting is that they came after the facts, which is not fruitful stomping grounds for them. Challenging facts is not something Sea World has ever been good at, so it was odd that they took that tactic. We rebuked everything they brought up quite easily, because the facts are indisputable. But what it also did was to bring all of these people out of the woodwork that I never would’ve heard from otherwise. Former Sea World trainers who weren’t in the film are contacting me. Veterinarians are contacting me, saying that not only is Blackfish factually correct, but you’re barely scratching the surface. Effectively, Sea World opened a big can of worms. The film opened in New York and LA, but I noticed people on your Facebook page asking about opening

dates in their area. Are you trying to let it build organically in response to audience demand? Magnolia Pictures has taken over the theatrical endeavor, so they’re the ones connected to the theatres. I do know that if people live in a town where the picture isn’t opening, they can go to their local theater and request it. It’s spreading to more new cities every day. What do you hope this film will do for the captive cetacean industry, Sea World, and whales in general? I hope Blackfish can be an agent of change in the way humans use animals for entertainment. We’re hoping Sea World will use some of their $2.7 billion in annual revenue to create rehab and release facilities for whales. They could create sea pens, where they cordone off an ocean cove and retire their whales to an open ocean environment. People say, “Why can’t you just release the whales?” But they were raised in captivity, and they don’t know how to eat live fish. There’s tremendous training involved in teaching them that. Doing this in a controlled sea pen environment could be a profit-driven endeavor, and I think school groups would come to see Killer Whales in the ocean. They’d be seeing the real thing for the first time. I think there is something very hopeful about where all this will ultimately take us…

Ryan Coogle’s Fruitvale Station Takes on Race Relations and Stand Your Ground Crimes Arises From the Ashes of BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

Florida. Late night. A young, unarmed black boy is killed by a non-black man who says he only shot in self-defense. A city is outraged. This isn’t another synopsis of the Trayvon Martin case that captivated the country though. Sadly, this is the backstory from a totally different heartbreaking incident, this time in Jacksonville with the tragic convenient store death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Back on New Year’s Day 2009, the death of Oscar Grant, a weaponless, 22-year-old African-American who was killed by a white Oakland transit cop, made headlines across the nation. Bay Area native Ryan Coogler, then an aspiring movie director attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts, felt the impact of everything surrounding the case first hand. And with his first full-length feature, Fruitvale Station (the name of the train station where Grant was killed), Coogler speaks his piece with assertiveness and grace. Audiences have been left in tears. Critics have been left speechless. What are your thoughts on the Tayvon verdict? It was devastating, man. For me, him having his life taken was the biggest tragedy. At the end of the day, a verdict or a sentencing isn’t going to bring him back. Young AfricanAmerican males are losing their lives on the street in so many different ways, from gun violence to black-on-black crime.There’s also officer-involved shootings, people with a lot of ethnic backgrounds are walking up to them and taking their lives. I think that we have to do everything we can to bring this to an end. You hit the nail on the head. Because when you look violence in Philly, you look at Chicago, you look at Atlanta… Absolutely. There are a thousand Trayvons. It’s not slowing down. What will happen when these kids lose their lives? It is a ripple effect. These are human beings, man. And how are people not seeing them as that? Ryan, for this to be your first major movie, you sure picked some heavy content. Why didn’t you go the comedy route or try something a little bit more lighthearted for that debut film? First, it wasn’t my first time making a film; it was my first time making a feature film. I made shorts and stuff in film school. But I approach every project as if it is going to be my last. I approach them in terms of doing something that resonates with me. So, when we started, if somebody asked what I was doing, I didn’t look at it as a big project or a major project. No, it was a very small budget

and done in a short amount of time. It was just something that meant the world to me, personally. And that is why I made it.

The Bay Area is very diverse and forward thinking, but when stuff like the Oscar Grant shooting and, more recently, the Trayvon Martin riots happen, does it change your philosophy about the city at all? Oh, it’s diverse. The Bay Area is obviously one of the most diverse places in the country, and definitely one of the most progressive places in the country — without question. At the end of the day, the place is made up of human beings, like everywhere else. We’ve got a really good public transit system and everybody kind of mixes together, but we still have the same issues that apply everywhere else. We deal with black-on-black crime in more cities than you can name at an alarming rate. I have gone to too many funerals for my friends and for people that I know or that I’ve worked with. When I go to Rotten Tomatoes, I see the movie has a 91% approval rating. People are loving it. With 91% approval ratings comes expectations. How are you going to prevent being M. Night Shyamalan or other directors who came out blazing, but subsequent films didn’t quite life up to expectations? I honestly don’t compare myself to any other filmmakers in terms of career paths or anything like that. I think all I want to do is continue to work. Continue to make projects that are important to me and continue to learn. As a filmmaker you have no control how your work is received. You have absolutely zero control over that. People are either going to like what you do or they won’t. I think all you can do is be true to yourself. In a year from now, Fruitvale’s leading star, Michael B. Jordan, is going to be a star. What makes him so special? Mike is one of those people who comes from good stock. He had great parents. Parents who instilled an amazing work ethic in him. He is incredibly experienced. He has been an actor every since he was very young. He has been a professional actor since before he was a teenager. And he is incredibly gifted. So, when you combine a high level of natural talent with the highest work ethic possible, you get greatness. Can you give a few words of advice to aspiring directors? I will tell them that making films is a very difficult thing. Also, make projects that are very important to you. Always make projects about things that are close to your heart and that would be your motivation to get through it, because it is not easy.

N TERMS OF BAND BREAKUPS, FANS of Static Radio NJ have little to complain about. Yes the group called it quits, but the lineup– minus drummer Charles (it’s punk rock, so no last names necessary)– quickly reformed and started Crimes, which sounds surprisingly similar to the last couple of Static Radio releases. Don’t believe me? Check it out yourself, with Crimes’ debut four-song EP, out shortly on cassette (yes, cassette) and download via Black Numbers. Bassist Vic Castello spoke with us recently about the breakup, the quick founding of his new band, bringing Trekkies to Jersey, and why a cassette tape release made sense. So why did Static Radio NJ split up? We wanted to kind of start over. We felt like since Static Radio had been around for about 11 years, we needed something fresh. We were tired of playing the older songs and we didn’t really like the name of the band anymore, so we figured a fresh start was in order. Also we were going through a few lineup changes and we didn’t really want to be one of those bands with a revolving door of members. Static Radio was always kind of a mess, we never really did stuff the “right” way as far as being a band, we only cared about writing songs we liked, playing them, and fucking partying. Crimes gave us a chance to do it right, but not skimp on the partying. How long had you been planning on working as Crimes? Pretty much the same time we decided to break up Static Radio we decided to start Crimes. It was all part of the same plan, I guess you could say.

Think there were any hurt feelings from Static members that weren’t part of this band? The only member of Static Radio that isn’t in Crimes is Charles. And, to be honest, he really didn’t like much of our stuff after our first full-length, An Evening of Bad Decisions. He’s more of a vegan (straight-edge) hardcore dude, so our newer stuff wasn’t really his thing. He’s in a band called Test Of Time now. They just got signed to Bridge Nine, and they’re much more his speed, so I think we’re all in a better position. Actually, when he found out about Crimes, he asked if we broke up Static Radio and started the new band because we wanted him out. But that really wasn’t the case. He mastered the LP and the live in-studio stuff we did in exchange for some Star Trek schwag that I had sent to him.

Him (Charles), Chris Scanlan (Static Radio’s original drummer), and me are all going to a Star Trek convention in Boston in June. It’s gonna be the tits! Anyway, the point is that it’s all good. Can fans of Static Radio NJ expect a similar sound with Crimes? I don’t see why not, since it’s the same dudes. The songs we’re writing now would have been the next Static Radio songs anyway, so I guess it’s the same thing. Is this EP a tease for a full-length LP? Sure, but we haven’t written it yet. We’re going to write it over the summer and hopefully we’ll get it out by the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014. We’ll see what happens. We’ll keep everyone posted on our various media outlets. Whose idea was it to release this one on cassette tapes vs. vinyl or CD? After discussing it with Black Numbers, we decided cassette and digital was the way to go. Here is why: Vinyl is super expensive, and on a 7” in particular, it would be hard not to lose a bunch of money on the release. Since it was only four songs, we can’t really charge more than five bucks. At that rate, being a brand new band and not selling a ton of them right off the bat, it would be a loss. Obviously we’re not in this band to MAKE money. But, at this point in all of our lives, we really can’t afford to lose too much money either. CD is kind of the same deal, but CDs tend to sell even less in our style of music. We thought that a digital copy was obviously important, but we also wanted to offer people a physical copy of the EP. The way we did it, if you buy the tape you get the digital copy for your personal listening device. But you can also have something to actually hold in your hands, and no one loses their shirts in the process. Those are all the questions I have. Anything else you want to cover? I came close several times, and then I finally got to the right person at the label. It’s an enormous company, of course. But when I finally got to that right guy, it was a clear-cut process. And that clarity was what I’d been looking for, really for ten years.

It was a technical nightmare from the technical side, but it was a dream for me! There’s nothing I love more than a technical nightmare. The DVD disc is a great time capsule of the band. It is. We have a huge archive of stuff, including some of the only footage to exist of Axis Studios and Studio One in Doraville. Billy Burton, our drummer, is a filmmaker so it all worked together to continue the cohesive piece of the album package. He rode heard over the whole DVD and it took some of the pressure off of me to focus on the other stuff. He’s got a great feel for the flow. And the presentation of the package is due to artist Ash Arnett; we have a long working relationship, too. So there it all is, it’s a picture of the band from 1983 to 1987. I see it as a somewhat exaggerated complimentary piece to our Deep End reissue from a while back. It covers the band from its origins to 1982.

Now that all of this looking back is at a good point, what does the future hold for the band? Well, we have about two-thirds of a new album done and maybe another third of an album waiting to be finished. We may release a few of the new songs in the coming months, maybe before the end of the year, particularly for our Kickstarter supporters. And I really want to turn my attention to getting the rest of our catalog back out, including World War 2.5 in an expanded edition as well. And hopefully playing to support this new package. I would like to play a lot, the band is sounding really good right now. You know, The Swimming Pool Q’s have really never broken up and it’s a really stable line-up, considering everything we’ve been through as a band. After all these years and changes in the music industry and tastes in general, why do you continue the band? Well, there’s a giant force out there, saying “NO.” The pressure of reality is one big “no” and you just have to ignore it, go “Yeah, uh-huh, uhhuh, uh-huh,” and keep doing it. You have to.

AVE ARCARI AND HIS BAND THE HELSINKI Hellraisers are essentially a three-man UN. Arcari is Scottish, his drummer and standup bassist are Finnish, and they play an eclectic brand of U.S. Blues mixed with classic British punk-rock. Their fifth and latest record, Whiskey in My Blood, captures the band deftly blending the two genres, packing the album with steel guitars and banjos underneath Arcari’s gruff vocals. In addition to 11 original songs, the album also features three stellar covers (including two Robert Johnson tunes). Before heading out for their first-ever American tour, Arcari was kind enough to answer a few questions. The album seems to combine some of the best elements of punk rock and bluegrass. What are your musical influences? Any influences that would surprise people?

2013 NCAA FOOTBALL PREVIEW BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

IGHT YEARS IS A LONG TIME. BACK IN 2005, Twitter was a mere blip in founder Jack Dorsey’s mind. Snoop Dogg was still kinda popular. Urban Meyer was in his first season as the Florida Gators’ head coach. Yeah, lots has changed since the last time a team that wasn’t from the SEC won the national title. (For those old fogies out there, that school was the Vince Young-led Texas Longhorns.) While Meyer no longer patrols the sidelines in Gainesville, he is in his second year as the leading man for the Ohio State Buckeyes. His squad quietly went 12-0 a year ago, but a postseason suspension kept OSU from fighting for a national title. With scandals behind them and an unthreatening schedule in front of them, Ohio State will not only compete for a crown in 2013, but it’ll beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the BCS title game in Pasadena, giving a non-SEC team the national championship for the first time since Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith was in theaters.

With Meyer holding the clipboard, maturing QB Braxton Miller leading the on-the-field charge and the scheduling gods takin’ it easy on them (Wisconsin and Penn St. come to Columbus), the Bucks have their eyes on the prize.

2. Georgia

Though the defense is without some weapons (Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree), the offense has enough in the arsenal (QB Aaron Murray, WR Michael Bennett and Heisman Trophy candidate RB Todd Gurley) to put up one helluva fight.

3. Alabama

The Crimson Tide will certainly miss Eddie Lacy running up the seams, but the hurt proves somewhat manageable with the knowledge that T.J. Yeldon, another great back who racked up over 250 yards in his last two games (the SEC championship and BCS title game), is ready for a full load.

4. Oregon

If you thought the high-flying Ducks offense would head south after coach Chip Kelly migrated East to the Philadelphia Eagles, you clearly haven’t seen the Animal Planet special Release the Quackin’, where speedsters Marcus Mariota, Byron Marshall and De’Anthony Thomas soar even higher in coach Mark Helfrich’s aggressive offense.

5. Clemson

Like the folks still holding out hope that Ryan Reynolds will one day be a Hollywood star, we still think the Clemson Tigers can be title contenders. Depending on how the Tajh-Boyd-toSammy-Watkins works in the Aug. 31 opener vs. UGA will determine if the season will unfold like X-Men: The Origins or R.IP.D..

6. Texas A&M

While Heisman-winning frat boy Johnny Manziel’s stats are eye-popping (3,706 passing yards, 21 rushing TDs, countless TMZ posts), there’s only one number that really means anything: Sept. 14, 2013, the day the Aggies can prove last year’s upset over Alabama was no fluke in a rematch in College Station.

7. Louisville

Most of everything you’ve heard about Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater is true. He’s got an NFL starter’s arm. He’s great under pressure. He purchased a $10 million insurance policy against injury. With that flimsy offensive line though, we’re just not sure he’s got enough to get the Cardinals into the top 5.

8. Stanford

After one of the quietest 12-2 campaigns ever for a major program, you don’t really expect the Cardinal to come into 2013 with much fanfare. Brilliantly humble coach David Shaw will calmly line up a reloaded offense and stout D (eight guys back from last year) and fight for another Pac-12 championship.

9. Oklahoma State

Gonna go out on a limb and say the Cowboys will spank the Lamar Cardinals 70-0 on Sept. 14. (After all, they did beat Savannah St. 84-0 a year ago.) Still, the fate of this year depends on how well Mike Gundy’s guys can score in year-end doozies against Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma.

10. South Carolina

With the overblown “Jadeveon Clowney was illegally talking to new sports agent Jay-Z” drama out the way, the Gamecocks can focus on football. Of course, the blueprint for an SEC title calls for the rest of the defense to stay as honed in as the superstar defensive end is on every snap.

11. LSU

Around Baton Rouge, 10-3 seasons aren’t to be celebrated. The stingy D isn’t terribly high on just finishing 12th in the nation in points allowed either. Look for ferocious defenders like John Chavis, Ego Ferguson and Lamin Barrow to go about improving these numbers this season.

12. Michigan

While Denard Robinson garnered most of the spotlight in Ann Arbor a year ago, it was actually Devin Gardner with the healthier numbers behind center (11 TDs on 126 attempts vs. Robinson’s nine TDs on 167 attempts). It’s just a shame he can’t do much for the injured defense.

13. Nebraska

There’s good news and bad news in Lincoln. Bad news first: In the Cornhuskers’ four losses, they gave up a mind-boggling 53.5 points a game. The good: Only four players from that abused bunch return, meaning a whole new group in Red Nation will do something about stopping the bleeding.

14. Ole Miss

We smell something down in Oxford and it isn’t the pork sliders cooking in front of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It’s the subtle smell of old gym socks and opportunity. Get a whiff of this: The Rebels have 19 guys returning on both sides of the ball, the No. 1 recruit (Robert Nkemdiche) in the nation and a favorable stretch of six straight home games.

15. Miami

With names like Stephon Morris and Duke Johnson on the roster, optimism is high around South Florida. But don’t take our word for it. Ask the Hurricanes ticket reps and they’ll tell you that season ticket sales are up 20%.

16. Notre Dame

As crazy as it sounds, the Fighting Irish haven’t had consecutive 10-win seasons since Lou Holtz’s boys back in ’91-93. For this year’s crew to repeat the good that last season’s 12-1 team did, it’ll have to survive an insane four-game stretch against Michigan St., Oklahoma, Arizona St. and USC.

17. Florida

If defenses won championships, a parade route could be set up through Gainesville by mid September. Unfortunately for the Gators though, it’s going to take some points to keep up with the likes of Miami and UGA. But if QB Jeff Driskel doesn’t get lost in the red zone, they could get to their destination of a BCS bowl.

18. TCU

Will the Horned Frogs go with the pocket-passing Casey Pachall, the fleet-a-foot Trevone Boykin or some combination of the two at QB? Here’s hoping Coach Gary Patterson figures it all out before the massive opener vs. LSU on August 31.

19. Boise St.

Like fuzzy dice in a Chevy Astro Van, these Broncos just know how to hang around. No matter how many players leave the program — 13 starters have to be replaced in ’13 — Chris Petersen finds a way to keep his team relevant. If they get past Washington (Aug. 31) and Fresno St. (Sept. 20), they might find their way into a BCS match-up.

20. USC

Back on July 29, Trojans head coach Lane Kiffin announced that in-season practices would no longer be open to the media. This means one of two things: 1) Lane’s cooking up secret plays with multi-talented WR Marqise Lee that he’s trying to keep secret; 2) The mediocre showing of last year has only gotten more embarrassing. Though it costs about $70 more, the 14 x 8 x 5-inch triangular Bluetooth wireless speaker provides a lot more bang for the buck, with a low end bass range that’s significantly ampedup from their previous model. It may not make going back to school any less of a pain in the butt, but it will almost certainly ensure that you have a little more pleasure once get there.

While oﬃcials work out the numbers, Fanatic knows three things that’ll happen, lockout or no lockout: 1) An SEC defender (Auburn’s Nick Fairley or LSU’s Patrick Peterson) will be the No. 1 pick in the Draft; 2) An 18-game season will be approved; 3) Super Bowl XLVI will kick-oﬀ as planned on Feb. 5, 2012 in Indianapolis.
