The Top 10 Memorable Movie Dads

F

ATHER’S DAY IS UPON US, SO what better time to reflect on cinema’s most memorable fathers? I’m talking about the ones who have bought us joy, laughter, and even pain. Some of these men may not be the best fathers in the world– they can’t all be Atticus Finch– but they are fathers who stick in our memories, whether for better or worse...

Bruce Dern in Nebraska

Kicking off the list is a film that most fathers and sons can relate to, creating a sense of nostalgia and making you think about the things you’ve yet to reconcile with the man that helped bring you into this world. Bruce Dern’s father figure in the subtle Nebraska is a man who hasn’t made the best decisions for himself or his family, but is still holding out hope that he can set some things right. This is bound to become a classic road trip film, and one that has already struck a deep chord with me.

Chevy Chase in National Lampoon’s Vacation

Clark Griswold needs few words. We all know and love him, and cringe at his antics while laughing our heads off as they continue to escalate further and further into absurdity. He loves his family dearly, and just wants to give them a good vacation. What’s so difficult about that? A lot, apparently.

Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood

Lewis’ Daniel Plainview wasn’t meant for fatherhood; he’s an oilman through and through. The business is his life, with little time for anything else. His son was the boy of a colleague who died while drilling. And though Plainview did seem to genuinely care for the lad at times, he was really just a tool to help him gain people’s trust, appearing to be a family man rather than the selfish, greedy man audiences loved to hate.

Dylan Baker in Happiness

Perhaps the worst father on the list, but incredibly memorable. This is a truly shocking, unique film that will either make you laugh through the tension or leave you wholly disgusted. Baker’s character is a deeply sick man dealing with pedophilic urges. And though they’re not aimed towards his son, they do focus on his son’s friends. This is a dark, twisted film that doesn’t judge its characters. That’s what makes this movie– and Baker’s character specifically– one that stays with the viewer well after the credits start to roll.

Jack Nicholson in The Shining

What’s a list about cinema’s most memorable fathers without the one that scared the crap out of us? Nicholson’s Jack Torrance is looking to start fresh when he moves his family to the Overlook Hotel. He’s hurt them with his drinking in the past, and hopes this change will set some things right. Of course, the opposite happens and he goes nuts and tries to kill them all. Jeez, can’t a guy catch a break?

Jeff Daniels in The Squid and the Whale

Going through divorce is never easy, especially on the kids. Daniels’ Bernard PG 6 • June 2014 • insiteatlanta.com

Bruce Dern

doesn’t make it any easier. He was once an important author, now jaded and jealous of his soon-to-be ex-wife’s successes. Due to his own pain and insecurities, he attempts to pit his sons against their mother so that he can feel some sort of validation. He’s not a bad man, he’s simply hurting and putting his kids in the line of fire, until he’s ultimately left alone, a broken shell of his former self.

John Krasinski in Away We Go

Krasinski’s character, Burt, is a good man, kind and loving, who wants nothing but the best for his family and will do whatever he must to give it to them. It sounds like an action movie set-up, but this one is grounded in reality. It shows flashes of other families, and has the characters learn and grow from their experiences in order to become the parents they want to be for their child. In one scene, Burt whittles for no reason other than that he wants to be a dad who does. How cool and endearing is that?

Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful

This film remains one of the funniest, saddest, and most moving portrayals of a man’s love for his family that I’ve ever seen. For those unfamiliar, get familiar with this Holocaust comedy-drama. It is unlike anything you’ve seen, and its fairy tale-like tone allows Benigni’s Guido to pull off some almost magical feats. But it’s all in an attempt to secure the innocence of his son during the most trying time of their lives. This one will make you cry, without a doubt.

Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire

This one is a no-brainer: We’ve all seen Williams’ man-child character, who screws up one too many times and must don some drag in order to get his family back. It’s a novel and entirely unrealistic tactic that never fails to entertain. If it hasn’t found a permanent place in your cinematic conscious by now, someone on the wonderful world of the Internet has re-cut the trailer to make it a horror film, which works all too well.

Viggo Mortensen in The Road

Mortensen’s unnamed father fights for the lives of himself and his son in this dark and somber tale of a crumbled society gone awry. He is the very definition of a protector, doing whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of his son in a world that has taken everything else from him. This isn’t a pleasant trip, but it’s a powerful one that’ll leave you fairly solemn (regardless of whether or not you thought the book was better).

The End of Mad Men

W

E KNOW HOW MAD MEN ENDS, even if we don’t know how things end for Don Draper. We’re living in the cultural remains of the 1960s, and the seeds of everything that politicians and ad execs and activists planted there. We know how Vietnam and The Beatles end. We know what becomes of “the American family unit.” So it feels oddly inevitable to vicariously watch Sally, Betty and Megan as the Drapers decay and self-destruct. We are post-Sexual Revolution, so we know more than Peggy does about her future as she starts wearing pantsuits and bemoans turning 30. But “how it ends” has never been what made Mad Men so compelling. It’s not like Lost or Fringe. The central plot of “Who is Don Draper?” has made for great twists from the beginning, as we realized that our protagonist had stolen another man’s identity on the battlefield in Korea and created his entire resumé out of lies. But, transcending all that, Mad Men is about how the characters navigate our past– how they inevitably become us. Put plainly, it’s the first show I’ve ever devoured with 20/20 hindsight. Still, the final season of the show, set in 1969, has thus far run with more whimper than bang. After last year, it seemed like Mad Men was going to pick up steam and untether its characters from the office and the lies they tell themselves and others. The cad Don (Jon Hamm) began the year on leave from Sterling Cooper & Partners after being kicked out of his own company at the end of last season. Don had been drinking too much, cheating on his wife and making rash decisions that nearly ruined the agency, and he capped all that by telling Hershey’s executives that he grew up in a brothel where hookers would give him chocolate. His actress wife Megan (Jessica Paré), left him in New York to pursue acting jobs in Los Angeles, their marriage in limbo. His ex-wife Betty (January Jones) is busy emotionally manipulating their children in Westchester. And his daughter Sally (Kiernan Shipka) realized that her dear ol’ dad was a lying, drunken adulterer, headed off to private school and started to rebel. But Mad Men always zags when you expect it to zig. It uses what we know about our collective history to give us expectations about the story, and then subvert them. Although 1969 was full of tumult and violence as well as “peace and love,” not much has happened to the characters in the first half of the season. Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) got a girlfriend, suntan and mutton chops in Los Angeles. Harry Crane (Rich Sommer) convinced the company to buy a computer. Bombshell secretary-turned-partner Joan (Christina Hendricks) stopped having to run the day-to-

day at the office. Don’s replacement in the office is a guy named Lou, who doesn’t give creative wonder Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) the respect she deserves. Instead of ramping up the tension, the show seemed to be paced slower than that riding lawnmower they once drove over a character’s foot. But creator Matthew Weiner and his writers have always let some episodes percolate like coffee before others deliver the kick. As we lead up to the season’s second half– set in the summer of ’69, which gave us Stonewall, Woodstock, the Manson family and the moon landing– I anticipate Mad Men will once again prove compelling. I assume they’ve placed characters on both coasts so that they can amplify the drama during the changing times. And Megan’s in the same neighborhood as the Tate-LaBianca murders, which I doubt is a coincidence. The AMC network, trying to build for a future without Breaking Bad and Mad Men, has also launched another period drama with a compelling anti-hero in a blossoming industry. Halt and Catch Fire, premiering June 1, is set in 1980s Texas and focuses on a couple of tech wizards trying to carve out their own piece of the future of personal computers by directly challenging IBM. The fantastic Lee Pace, who starred in Pushing Daisies, plays a manipulative schemer named Joe McMillan. In the pilot, he snares two other developers into a plot to break the law and endanger their careers. Unlike other takes on the history of the tech boom, Halt and Catch Fire amps up the suspense and the personal drama. The pilot was directed by Oscar-winner Juan Jose Campanella, and it makes me long for the Speak & Spell I had in 1983. Combining nostalgia and drama is the main reason I love Mad Men. And Halt and Catch Fire should help AMC fill that gaping void. SEE ALSO:

House of Cards

In terms of dark characters you can’t help but love, Kevin Spacey’s politician Frank Underwood is one of the most fun. The Netflix drama has two seasons of twists and shocks.

The Good Wife

Julianna Marguiles’ portrayal of Alicia Florrick puts a solid, decent character at the center of a show of sharks, politicians and lawyers. The season which just concluded is its absolute best. Prior seasons are on Hulu Plus.

Orange Is The New Black

The new season is available on Netflix beginning June 6. I. Cannot. Wait.

No story about burgers in our city would be complete without paying our respects to the Godfather of all Atlanta burger joints, The Vortex Bar & Grill. There are well over 20 original burger creations on the menu, and you can even build your own by choosing a unique combination of toppings. All the variations of this world famous hamburger are made with 100% choice ground sirloin and are grilled to perfection over an open flame. They also offer homemade veggie burgers, turkey burgers and fried chicken options. Their burger selections run the gamut from the simple to the ridiculous, which include the Fat Elvis, Big Bad Voodoo Patty, Zombie Apocalypse, all the way up to their largest offering, the gut-busting Triple Coronary Bypass Burger. The Vortex is also a drinking man's bar, featuring one of Atlanta's largest selections of beer and spirits. In addition to the great food and drink, the owner's off-beat sense of humor, no-nonsense attitude, and large collection of kooky decor have all become hallmarks of The Vortex. The Little 5 Points location features a 20foot high "Laughing Skull" facade. While the Midtown location is host to the world's smallest full-time comedy venue, the Laughing Skull Lounge, hidden in the back. Be forewarned, The Vortex is not for the faint-of-heart. It is not politically correct and you must be 18 or over to enter. All that being said, it's hard not to wonder if the recent explosion of specialty burger restaurants in our city would have ever happened were it not for the trailblazing efforts of this very popular, locally-cherished institution.

As blockbusters grow larger in scope and visuals with each passing season, some movies show us how satisfying it can be to stay small. BEST SUMMER MOVIES

BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

T

HE OFFICIAL SUMMER MOVIE season is in full swing and Godzilla is trampling the competition, for now. But as June arrives and the summer sun bakes the Georgia clay, the comfort of a comfy air-conditioned cinema seems a welcome relief. But before you plunk down your hard-earned money for that massive tub of buttered popcorn and a souvenir cup of Coke, take a look of the some of the upcoming highlights of the sizzlin’ season. We’ll preview the expected hits as we throw in a few surprises that you might otherwise overlook. Super-stars and super-heroics abound, as usual. Even Scarlett Johansson has superpowers and kicks expected booty. But the season isn’t always about overthe-top blockbusters. Philip Seymour Hoffman arrives with two final goodbye appearances, as a blue-collar American loser and as a dynamic German spy. And of course the onslaught of sequels and reboots. Godzilla was the just the tip of the lizard-tail. Heroes returning to the screen include Spider-Man, Transformers, Expendables, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, those darn Apes and dragons. JUNE

JUNE 6 “ANNA”

The stars: Taissa Farmiga, Mark Strong, Brian Cox. The shill: Taissa, Vera’s little sis, is a psychological mess and a dedicated detective (Strong) with a gift of perception sets out to sort her out. The skinny: This fascinating, chillingly dark character study probably won’t break concession records, but is definitely worth a latenight visit at a dimly lit cinema near you.

“ALL CHEERLEADERS DIE”

The stars: Caitlin Stasey, Leena Miller. The shill: Stasey is featured as a high

school girl with a grudge against the football captain. So guess what, she joins the cheer squad. Happens every day, right? Mayhem ensures, naturally. The skinny: The horror-comedy should do well with bored teens, “Carrie” fans and sci-fi nuts who love to see pretty girls causing chaos.

“EVERGREEN: THE ROAD TO LEGALIZATION”

The stars: Weed, cannabis. The shill: Riley Morton’s documentary

about Washington State’s 2012 approval of recreational marijuana takes a look at the impact of the decision on people and places. The skinny: Balanced and entertaining PG 14 • June 2014 • insiteatlanta.com

look at how the evergrowing acceptance of pot for personal use is affecting society. Worth inhaling a few times.

“HELLION”

The stars: Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis, Josh Wiggins. The shill: Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul is featured as a reserved dad of two sons. His 13-year-old (Wiggins), is into dirt-bike racing and getting into trouble in general. The skinny: Intriguing troubled family / intense character drama with standout performances from Paul, Wiggins and the always-interesting Lewis.

“HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2” The stars: Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett,

Gerald Butler. Craig Ferguson. The shill: Dreamworks is at it again, and a new villain (voice by Djimon Hounsou) is after the hero, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel). Filled with amusing celebrity voices and cliffhanging peril. Diected by Dean DeBlois (“Lilo And Stitch”). The skinny: Summer and Dreamworks team for yet another eye-popping, 3-D box-office bonanza.

“JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE”

The stars: Andre Benjamin, Hayley Atwell, Burn Gorman. The shill: Andre 3000 stars in this drama as a young Jimi Hendrix, the pre-Woodstock version, who is working toward being the iconic version who left an incredible musical legacy and is emblazoned on t-shirts at Target. The skinny: Benjamin channels the troubled Hendrix, as an artist who enlisted the help of mentors and the story focuses on his relationships with women and friends as he became the icon. And, due to copyright problems, little of his classic material is included. Still, if you want to see Andre in a Hendrix suit, check it out.

“22 JUMP STREET” The stars: Channing

Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube. The shill: Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return in the sequel to the 2012 buddy-cop trip “21 Jump Street.” Here, the partners go undercover as college students, and one is a jock and the other blends

into the airy world of the art majors. Ice Cube returns too, The skinny: If you liked the first one, or the ’87 TV series the original was based upon, this predictable buddy-picture takes the same basic premise and recycles it to fit the expected summer results.

JUNE 20 “JERSEY BOYS”

The stars: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Christopher Walken. The shill: Clint Eastwood directs the film adaptation of the popular Broadway play about the life and times of the scruffy, evergreen ‘60s hit-makers The Four Seasons, featuring the “sound” of Frankie Valli, as they were often billed. It’s usually interesting pathos and hard-work-story of the band, as depicted in the play, but this time it’s opened-up a bit for cinematic form. The skinny: The play did huge box-office, so there’s probably no reason the film won’t clean up, as well. With the classic songs on the soundtrack, how can it go wrong?

JUNE 27 “TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION”

The stars: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor The shill: Michael Bay returns with the Autobots and the Decepticons in tow, with the added twist of new humans, in this latest battle. The always dependable Mark Wahlberg is an auto mechanic with a surprising revelation, with support from Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Bingbing Li and Nicola Peltz. The skinny: The fourth installment of the interchangeable robot franchise. Look for a new spin on the story with Galvatron. A sure-fire summer hit.

JULY

JULY 2 “DELIVER US FROM EVIL” The stars: Eric Bana,

Olivia Munn, Joel McHale. The shill: Jerry Bruckheimer presents the story of a New York cop (Bana), who is lured into a case involving paranormal activity and demons. Not just another day on the beat, with Olivia Munn as Bunn’s

2014

wife, who has a secret connection to the case. McHale is marvelous as Bana’s tough partner. The skinny: Over-the-top but betterthan-you’d-think action drama from Bruckheimer, the master of heavy handed bloakbusters.

“EARTH TO ECHO”

The stars: Teo Halm, Reese Hartwig, Brian “Astro” Bradley. The shill: Three young friends dominate this sci-fi boiler from Dave Green (Zombie Roadkill). The boys (Halm, Hartwig and Astro) stumble upon something strangely extraterrestrial about a construction project in the neighborhood. The skinny: A likeable buddy drama for the younger set, stocked with enough aliennation hooks to keep adults interested.

“TAMMY”

The stars: Susan Sarandon, Melissa

McCarthy, Allison Janney. The shill: McCarthy does triple duty as cowriter, co-producer (with Will Ferrell) and co-star of this road picture that tells the tale of the titular character’s escape from the drudges of normalcy, out on the road with her grandmother (Sarandon). They head to Niagara Falls and the expected wacky hijinks ensure. The skinny: McCarthy is a likeable presence, but the casting of Sarandon as her grandma (there’s a 24-year age difference, FYI) is a bit bewildering to say the least. Still, with caution to the wind, this could be a breezy summer hit.

JULY 4 “LIFE ITSELF”

The star: Roger Ebert. The shill: A bio-pic of the late film critic,

based upon his memoir of the same name, the film focuses on the critic and his life and times, including his brave battles with the industry and personal gain and loss. The skinny: The last four months of Ebert’s life is unblinkingly chronicled in this absorbing and surprisingly uplifting film. A must for film-fans of all ages. A big thumb up!

“DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES”

The stars: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman,

Judy Greer.

The shill: Director Matt Reeves brings us the latest installment of the venerable Apes series, this time with a deadly virus on the rampage. The apes vs. humans war rages on with a possibly fatal fight for dominance. Andy Serkis stars as the wise Caesar, and often-comic actress Judy Greer is wonderful as Cornelia. The skinny: The wildly popular series shows no signs of age or irrelevance, and in a real world of frighteningly important global warming, the cautionary tale resonates stronger than ever.

“THE FLUFFY MOVIE”

The star: Gabriel Iglesias. The shill: A stand-up film with popular

comic/actor Iglesias as the big figure. He tackles the usual and unusual subjects, often profane, with an enduringly good natured abandon that the average Joe can easily relate to. Yes, fat jokes abound, but at the core of the message is his total ownership of his looks, intelligence and star-power charisma. The (um…) skinny:

For fans and soon-to-be fans. His standup act is undeniably ribald and definitely hilarious.

JULY 18 “PLANES: FIRE AND RESCUE”

The stars: Dane Cook, Julie Bowen. The shill: The 3-D sequel to Disney’s Planes, Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook), is recovering from wing damage and has a new chance to reinvent himself, this time as an exciting areal firefighter. Dusty and the gang help fight a massive wildfire as they learn some valuable life-lessons along the way. The skinny: It’s got hit written all over it. A can’t-miss sequel from the masterminds of Disney.

“JUPITER ASCENDING”

The Stars: Mila Kunis,

Channing Tatum, Sean Bean. The shill: The Matrix factory folks The Wachowskis are back with more intelligent science fiction. This time out, their tale spins around a downon-her-luck girl (Kunis) who may be next in line to be crowned Queen of the Universe. The ubiquitous Channing Tatum is just around the corner, ready to come to her aid. The skinny: Well-done sci-fi isn’t rare, but the combo of Kunis and the Wachowskis are a potent mix. Tatum is seemingly everywhere these days, but he’s a serviceable foil for a far-fetched story such as this.

JULY 25 “A MOST WANTED MAN”

The stars: Philip Seymour Hoffman,

Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe. The shill: The late Hoffman is a calmly calculating German spy, and the hero of author John le Carré’s novel, set in Hamburg. Here, the story centers on a half-Chechen, half-Russian Islamic immigrant, central to an impending war on terror. Directed by Anton Corbijn. The skinny: The presence of the much-missed actor Hoffman, and the creative touch by director Corbijn, a gifted photographer and videographer of iconic music images and videos, will mark this as a must-see film of the season. Highly recommended.

“SEX TAPE”

The stars: Cameron Diaz, Jason

Segel, Jack Black. The shill: After a decade of marriage, lovemaking is a bit ordinary for our protagonists. To spice it up a bit, they decide to make a three-hour (?) compilation of their best marital moments. Of course, the tape gets lost. Then the chase begins. Rob Lowe, who had his own misadventure with a sex tape has a cameo. The skinny: Ya seen one, ya seen ‘em all, right? Let’s see who bothers to watch this one.

“HERCULES”

The stars: Dwayne Johnson, John Hurt, Ian McShane. The shill: Son of Zeus, by gosh, Hercules stalks again and again. This time, the stoic meat slab is played by The Actor Formerly Known As The Rock, with able support from otherwise good performers including Hurt and McShane. Heck, even Joseph Fiennes (“Shakespeare In Love” is along for the rumble. The skinny: Not everyone’s cup of tea, the good ol’ sand and sandal pictures have been around forever and one more, even with the deadpan Johnson as the hero, probably won’t hurt anything.

JULY 25 “VERY GOOD GIRLS” The stars: Dakota

Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen, Demi Moore. The shill: In ultra-hip, modern-day Brooklyn, two teenage best friends (Fanning and Olsen) are determined to lose their virginity before they leave for college. But then they fall for the same guy. All-important summertime life-lessons ensue! The skinny: Fanning and Olsen’s vapid appeal is enough to hook the target audience – along with the placid promise of summertime sensuality tempered with an inevitable, happily ever after resolution. AUGUST

AUGUST 1 “GET ON UP”

The Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Brandon

Smith, Jill Scott. The Shill: Newcomer Boseman stars

as “The Hardest Working Man In Show Business” and does a remarkable job in the process. Look for Brandon Smith as the inimitable Little Richard and an impressive turn from Jill Scott as Dee-Dee Jenkins. The Skinny: Yes, another musical biography, but this one beats Andre’s Jimi by a long shot. As authentic, gritty and sweaty as a night at The Royal Peacock. Good God, y’all!

“WHAT IF”

The stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Rafe Spall. The shill: Radcliffe and Kazan star as a couple who meet a party. They feel an attraction but both are otherwise engaged. He’s just out of an exhausting relationship and she’s betrothed to a mysterious boyfriend (Spall). The skinny: Formerly known as “The F Word,” the film, if given a chance, is a wonderfully realized study of love in stages. As such it should resonate with fans of Radcliffe’s Harry Potter as they mature and delve into their own spiral of relationships and personal growth.

AUGUST 6 “DEEPSEA CHALLENGE”

The stars: James Cameron, the sea. The shill: Director Cameron (“Titanic,”

“The Abyss”) is no stranger to the depth of the sea. This film documents his journey to become an explorer and travel solo to the deepest point in the planet. Spoiler alert: he made it. The skinny: The thoroughly engrossing, National Geographicbacked production is a major feat for the esteemed filmmaker and his excitement and apprehension makes for great content. Good job all around, and more exciting than all of his other movies combined. And it’s available in 3-D! Worth the price of admission, just for the scenery.

AUGUST 8 “LUCY”

The stars: Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman. The shill: Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is a drug mule for the mob in Taiwan.

Ok, don’t ask why, she just is. The drug implanted into her body makes her become a superhuman. Again, suspend disbelief, it’s summer, after all. She’s then blessed with extreme intelligence, the power to move objects with her mind, and she cannot feel normal pain or other discomforts. Morgan Freeman co-stars as a scientist. The skinny: If the luscious Scarlett Johansson isn’t enough, the film is loaded with clever special effects and Freeman’s wise scientist is the icing on the cake. Could this be the perfect summer movie?

“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES”

The stars: Megan Fox, Johnny Knoxville, Alan Rickman. The shill: A reboot of the bewilderingly popular cartoon series, this time the crimefighting Turtles must work closely with news reporter April (Megan Fox, of course) to save the big city from certain doom. It’s all tongue-incheek, of course and the clear-cut morals of the story shine clearly in the end. The skinny: A hit, of course. Kids love TMNT and the parents will acquiesce, with a wad of cash for the drinks and treats.

AUGUST 15 “THE EXPENDABLES 3”

The Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson. The shill: Yes, another sequel, but the only one of the summer co-written by Sylvester Stallone (as of this writing, anyway). The gang from Expendables 2 is back, clashing with a ruthless arms dealer (Gibson), set to dismantle the considerable firepower of the Expendable unit. The skinny: Aging action stars, phallic weapons and gutrattling explosions equal the perfect summer diversion for the gun nut on your list. Drop ‘em off here in the morning for a whole day of ampedup arousal.

AUGUST 22 “FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR”

The stars: Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Bruce Willis. The shill: A sequel of sorts, of course, because it’s summer. Four stories by Frank Miller are combined here to make one incredible whole. The guests are stellar and the stories teeter on the edge of believability with the common thread being a very cool noir vibe throughout. Several actors return for this edition, including Alba, Dawson and Willis. Newcomers include Eva Green, Josh Brolin, and Stacey Keach. Even Lady Gaga finally shows up in the action! The skinny: A great ensemble cast populate the film, with predictable results. An intelligent alternative to the Mutant Turtles, for the adults. insiteatlanta.com • June 2014 • PG 15

AMERICA’S SWEETHEART

America’s Got Talent judge Heidi Klum Talks About Show Contestants, Criticism and the Chances of Her Children Performing on Stage

BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

I

T’S STORIES LIKE LANDAU Eugene Murphy Jr.’s rags-to-riches journey that explain why America’s Got Talent is approaching its ninth season. A West Virginia car wash attendant barely making ends meet, Landau and his Frank Sinatra-inspired pipes won over the hearts of the AGT judges and TV audience back in 2011 so much that he won the $1 million grand prize. AGT judge Heidi Klum’s rise to living rooms across the globe wasn’t nearly as abrupt, but it was just as memorable. Born in Germany in 1973, Klum garnered international headlines in the 90s as a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girl and Victoria’s Secret “Angel.” There has been a bit of television and movie acting since, but much of her on-camera success has come as host (and executive producer) of the longrunning Project Runway reality show. INsite caught up with the TV personality/ actress/businesswoman/mother of four before the show’s May 27 season premiere and got her thoughts on her first auditions, future Landau Eugene Murphys, and the likelihood of her kids ever performing on stage.

there was this one boy who was a yo-yo pro. It might sound, like, very simple, but I have never seen anyone deal with a yo-yo the way this guy did. So, they keep surprising us and then I’m like, “Wow, how amazing is that to have a talent like that?” So we sit there and every few minutes, someone else comes onto the stage and they are the ones that surprise us where you think, “Wow, I can’t believe people are that good at something like that.”

Do you ever think about when you were starting out and going to auditions as a model or an actress, kind of the nervousness and anxiety that you would go through and think about that when you’re dealing with these people that are auditioning for you? Yes, I sit there and I try to be always open-minded and give everyone a fair chance, you know? People don’t always do that in the business. You know, when I started and I would go to casting, I have memories of where people sometimes go through your book that you’ve been working on for a whole year — your picture book — and people just rush through it and sometimes they don’t even look up to you to see you and they hand the book back to you and go, “Okay, next.” And sometimes people don’t really Heidi, this is your second give you a fair chance and I’M A JUDGE, SO I season and you have been you’re always disappointed HAVE TO TELL THEM witnessing so many different THE GOOD NEWS and disappointed and acts thus far. Is there any AND THE BAD NEWS disappointed when people, particular act that you AND HAVE TO TELL kind of treat you in a certain would like to see that you THEM WHY. SO, YOU way. So, I always try to haven’t seen yet? KNOW, THAT WAS remember that when people It’s always hard to talk about DEFINITELY A NEW come on to the stage, to give an act that you haven’t seen EXPERIENCE FOR ME everyone a fair shot. I know yet because, you know, even TO HAVE PEOPLE that these people are nervous; on this season, I was surprised BOO AT ME WHEN they’ve been waiting in line with many acts that I had I WAS CRITICIZING for hours. So, I don’t take that never even dreamed of before. SOMEONE. lightly. I don’t just buzz in the For example, we had one first two seconds. The first season, you know, a nine-year old that is a professional with a I was definitely a little bit more nervous Rubik’s Cube.” Like, he did it with his hands because it’s different when you’re there in 20 seconds and then Nick kind of messed than when you’re watching at home from up the Rubik’s Cube again. doing this live in front of 5,000 people and it’s hard when you criticize someone or you say, you know, certain things that you didn’t like about this act and then you have 5,000 fans in the background booing at you. It’s something that I’d never experienced before, you know? Yes, I’ve been in the entertainment business for 20 years, but, you know, whenever someone doesn’t like my picture or they don’t like a commercial that I’ve done, or they don’t like if I do Project Runway or another show — I don’t get that feedback. But when you sit there and you say something and people are booing at you because they don’t like what you just said, that was definitely something new for me to have that kind of feedback. With the second season around, I’m a little bit more used to. But I have to criticize people and I have to tell them what I don’t like, the same way how I tell people how amazing they were and I give them a standing ovation when I tell them how incredible their act is. Like, that’s what I’m hired to do. I’m a judge, so I have to tell them the good news and the bad news and have to tell them why. So, you know, that was definitely a new experience for me to have people boo at me when I was criticizing someone. How do you handle it when you’re away from the family for so long? When we start the live shows, it’s easier for me because I’m moving my entire family to New York instead of me flying back and forth every week. You know, I just set up our base there, so my family is there and they don’t have to move. So, it works out perfectly for my schedule, you know, in terms of my kids going to school. And they love being in New York because we only really shoot only two days a week. We shoot the live shows Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I have all the other days off where I can run around with my family and enjoy New York City. And it’s so great; they love being in New York City. We go see all the Broadway shows. We’re kind of like tourists. We take the doubledecker bus and drive around and look at everything. And every year, as my kids get older, they kind of suck New York in in a different way and they totally enjoy it. So, it’s actually really great for us as a family because I work two days and the rest of the week I get to spend with my kids. Now, when we do the auditions, it is not that bad. It’s always like

four or five days when we did the auditions and then, you know, I turn right back around and I go home. So it works out pretty well. What do think makes the show work so wellthe fact that it is a variety show or the fact that it’s a show that the whole family can watch together? I think because it’s a variety. I do watch the show with my children and I have for many years watched the show with my children. And there is not a lot on television that can keep their attention for a very long time. If it’s just about music or it’s just about dance, they’re like, “Okay, can we watch something else now?” They get bored. And what this show [does] is that, every few minutes, someone else comes out with something so unexpected. You know, you always have a surprise and they just want to sit there and just know who comes out next. And that’s, I think, what keeps everyone [watching] America’s Got Talent because there are all these new, amazing people with amazing ideas that pop up every year over and over again where we’re like, “Whoa, how can someone even think of that?” The audience just loves that. And my kids love that. And that’s why every year after year they want to watch America’s Got Talent. It’s the variety of it. You have aerialists. You have strength acts. You have magicians. You have comedians. You have kid dancers. You have male and female singers. You have all these novelty acts like what I said before — the kid with the Rubik’s Cube or the yo-yo pro. There is just so much that keeps all of our attention because we want more, like, “Who’s coming out next?” And that’s why it’s such a huge success. Would you let your children audition for America’s Got Talent if they wanted? I think it’s hard for children to get rejected, and I don’t know if I want to put my kids through that. The good thing with my children is that they don’t have the ambition to do that right now. My kids are kids. They want to be kids. They go to school and they have their hobbies, but they are not kids that are training to do anything like that right now. So, I’m not pushing them. I’m happy about that. They have their playdates and they have their soccer and gymnastics classes and things like that that they love and that they’re passionate about.

RAISING THE BARR

Roseanne Returns on NBC’s Last Comic Standing BY JENNIFER SMITH WILLIAMS

R

OSEANNE BARR IS BACK AS part of a rocking panel of Last Comic Standing judges (including Keenen Ivory Wayans and Russell Peters) who really, really know funny. The show’s new season premiered on May 22. Rosanne remains as irreverently funny as she’s ever been, sharp-tongued and more passionate than you’ve ever seen her. We recently got the chance to try to get a word in edgewise between the funny gal and her producer, Page Hurwitz. Roseanne wants you to watch this show. Take a look… Why did you decide to do the show this season? Roseanne: I just thought it would be really fun. And when I heard that Keenen Ivory Wayans was one of the judges, you know, I really love him. And I like (executive producer) Wanda Sykes a lot, too. So I thought it would be fun to work with some really great comics and get right in the middle of stuff that has to do with standup comedy. How is the format of this show going to be different than ones that came before? Page Hurwitz: Roseanne’s an expert on the format. Roseanne: Yes, I know all about it. Page: Roseanne is often quoted as saying, “I have no idea how this show works.” Roseanne: I kind of don’t. But it’s good, though! Ok, ok, ladies. So… back to the question? Paige: The biggest change viewers will notice is that we didn’t do open call auditions. In previous seasons they did open calls in various cities, and people off the street would come in and audition. This season, Wanda Sykes and I did the casting. We picked 100 top comics from around the country, and then we had them come to L.A. They performed in a big theater venue for what we call our invitational round. And then it was up to Roseanne, Keenen and Russell Peters to decide who would advance in the competition. [Also] this season, the judges have made all the decisions, and we think they’ve done a great job. Roseanne: Well, thanks. Page: You’re welcome. Roseanne: I think we’ve done a great job, too. In the spirit of reality competition shows, there’s always a good judge, a mean judge… What role are you playing? Roseanne: Intelligent! Page: That’s true. Roseanne: You know, I’m just me. I didn’t, like, try to copy somebody else. I’m a big fan of comics and comedy, as you may know. So I just give my honest opinion, as I have done for all these many years. If you were on this show as a contestant, how do you think you’d do? Roseanne: I would’ve won! I did, in fact,

win [in] Denver. And that is what propelled my career. I also did a number of other un-televised comedy contests. But I think I would’ve really worked really hard. Is standup comedy still basically the same as it was when you were growing up? Roseanne: You know, there’s so many different kinds of standup and so many different kinds of clubs now, and people like that. I was thinking that it was pretty static and boring, actually, over these last few years. But becoming a judge on this show and seeing people who are actually saying jokes that I’ve never heard before, it’s kind of exciting. This is like a re-birth of comedy. Not just on this show, but all over the place. So yes, there’s a whole different everything. A while ago, you said you were done with television. Is this your public reconsideration? Roseanne: Well, this isn’t a sitcom. I meant like developed, scripted stuff, you know? This is just watching some really incredibly talented people. So that’s easy. Do you show off a different side to yourself? Roseanne: I show that I’m a mouthy bitch. People may not have known that…

Since this is a show about launching a comedian’s career, how did you decide between veterans and newbies? Roseanne: We’re just comparing who’s hungriest, who wants it most, who’s got the balls to get out there and deliver the mail. Some of the professionals haven’t made it because they’re arrogant. They don’t really want it. We’ll take someone who infects the audience with enthusiasm over someone who’s kind of bored. Your big break came courtesy of Rodney Dangerfield. Are you hoping to pay it forward here? Roseanne: Yes. I like to support standup comedy as a craft and to find stars among, you know, the people who do it. Meeting Rodney Dangerfield was one of the biggest thrills in my life, and being his friend was another one. He gave everybody their starts– me, Andrew Dice Clay, Sam Kinison... I mean, he had a Young Comedian special! He gave us all our start, as did Mitzi Shore and Budd Friedman. So yeah, I kind of feel like maybe I’m paying it forward now. Last Comic Standing has been off the air for several years. Why should people watch it now? Roseanne: There’s some really good comics in this competition, and I can’t wait until people see them. I think they’re really going to see something new and funny and edgy and different. Our judging styles are not like other judges you’ve ever seen. And, you know, it’s kind of like, “Hey, watch this. I think it’s really good!” Good TV is good TV. And TV that makes people laugh is, like, you know, the best!

Album Reviews

REVIEWS BY BRET LOVE, JOHN B. MOORE & LEE VALENTINE SMITH

THE DEAN’S LIST NEIL YOUNG

A Letter Home (Reprise/Third Man)

Using quaint technology in the best possible way. LVS: Never one to make the same record twice, Neil Young has, with wildly varying outcomes, always embraced change. A one-man variety show, he’s capable of some of the finest albums of the rock era (Harvest) and some of the worst (Trans). In the ‘80s, he veered out into space for a while, wandering around genres with every new release. The 2000’s find Young back out in the fields, farming barren ground on 2003’s Greendale and crafting the best-forgotten car-opera, Fork in the Road (2009). Now, following his recent Psychedelic Pill, the mercurial singer-songwriter offers a covers album, albeit one with a cool gimmick. Recorded in Jack White’s Third Man complex, A Letter Home finds Young alone in the booth. Not the control room, but an actual booth. White owns a vintage telephone booth-sized Voiceo-Graph recording studio, originally manufactured in 1947 as a novelty vinyl record machine. Young drops his money in and edges up to the single mic to offer extremely raw renditions of Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain.” White squeezes into the booth to join Young on the Everly Brothers’ “I Wonder If I Care As Much.” The all-acoustic album is a pure lo-fi joy from start to finish.

SEVENDUST

Time Travelers & Bonfires (7 Bros)

Atlanta’s alt-metal icons go acoustic again… to great effect. BL: It’s been a long, bumpy road for these Atlanta altmetal vets. But, along the way, Sevendust has built up a loyal legion of grassroots followers that continue to support their efforts. So, for the self-produced Time Travelers & Bonfires, it made perfect sense that the band launched a direct-to-fan fundraising campaign via PledgeMusic, ultimately raising 235% of their goal. The result is one of the most impressive albums of the band’s career, with 12 songs evenly divided between new songs and acoustic versions of their greatest hits (as chosen by their fans). New tracks like the opening “Come Down” boast an exhilarating slow-burn intensity you don’t expect from acoustic rock, losing most of the distortion from their trademark sound, but none of the passion. “The Wait” is another new standout, with strings and piano building a dynamic

epic reflecting on the personal loss of saying goodbye to loved ones who have passed away. But the album’s second half is even more revealing, with acoustic versions of classic cuts like “Black” (from their debut) and “Denial” (from Home) shining a spotlight on Lajon Witherspoon’s soulful vocals. This isn’t the first time Sevendust has done an acoustic album¬: fans have been clamoring for a follow-up to 2004’s Southside Double-Wide: Acoustic Live for years. But it is a timely reminder of the talent that continues to drive the grandfathers of Georgia’s metal scene, 20 years into their careers.

OASIS

Definitely Maybe [Remastered] (Big Brother Recordings)

Brit-pop classic gets massive anniversary treatment. JM: Putting aside the truly obnoxious personalities of the Gallagher brothers, it’s hard to find fault with the band’s debut album. Released in 1994, when the U.S. was still madly in love with grunge, Oasis lead a second British Invasion and paved the way for bands like Blur, Radiohead and Coldplay. While similar groups like Travis and Suede never really gained the respect here that they did in Europe, Definitely Maybe managed to sell 5 million copies and re-introduced America to Brit-pop via brilliant tracks like “Cigarette & Alcohol,” “Supersonic” and the slightly less stellar “Live Forever” (a big hit at the time, but one that didn’t age as well as others on this otherwise terrific debut). Big Brother Recordings has now remastered the album– the first of three Oasis records getting this treatment– and reissued it with two bonus CDs. While the album itself is a must-have, this 3-disc set is likely to appeal mostly to serious Oasis fans. But, for the true believers, this collection is like unearthing the Holy Grail, with plenty of demos, B-Sides, lost tracks and live takes. The live cover of The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” is fantastic, as is a live in-store rendition of “Up in the Sky.” The Gallagher brothers may be assholes, but man, can they write a catchy hook!

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN

El Camino Real (429 Records)

A moody meditation on West Coast sensibilities. LVS: For its ninth studio LP, Camper Van Beethoven have issued a moody, yet succinct follow-up to last year’s La Costa Perdida. Self-producing the 11 tracks, frontman (and part-time Athens resident) David

Lowery & Co. tracked the disc in assorted studios and living rooms throughout the state of California. Though the band was always more folk than punk, their gritty, hardcore DIY aspect shines through as usual. The rootsy record is populated by such unusual suspects as Jack Kerouac, Richard Brautigan, assorted west coast creeps, and the alluring pathos of the Big Sur mindset. With a mischievously dark outlook, the sullen waves of the collection ebb and flow with a stormy tumult. Standout tracks such as “It Was Like That When We Got Here” shuffle along, with Lowery’s deadpan delivery adding even more drama to the cautionary proceedings. Especially menacing is the deceptively easy-going country-rock of “I Live In LA,” which caps a densely-layered collection that once again illustrates the band’s rich mastery of literate rock.

REST OF THE CLASS THE CROOKES

Soapbox (Modern Outsider)

British indie-rockers return with their third offering. JM: The third release from Sheffieldbased band The Crookes is inching towards a more cohesive sound. The dream-pop band isn’t creating anything revolutionary with this 10-track record, but they have crafted a sentimental album that calls to mind bands like Belle & Sebastian and The Smiths (“Sad Bastard music,” as Jack Black’s character in High Fidelity would classify them). The album is a little uneven, but there are some memorable tracks tucked inside, like “Before the Night Falls” and the triumphant “Outsiders.” It just requires a bit of patience to cull through the less impressive cuts on Soapbox. Though it’s probably not going to break the band big in the U.S., the album’s bright spots hint at something greater to come. Definitely a step in the right direction... (B-)

B.o.B

Underground Luxury (Grand Hustle/ Atlantic)

ATL’s mainstream hip-hop hero tries to duck back underground. BL: There’s been a sense of artistic duality to B.o.B’s (a.k.a Bobby Ray Simmons Jr.) career from the beginning. Growing up in Decatur during the era when Outkast, T.I. and Ludacris were putting Atlanta on the hiphip map, he established himself as one of the city’s finest underground MCs four years before the release of his debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray.

His more accessible pop side (plus guest spots by Hayley Williams, Eminem and Bruno Mars) made the album a smash, charting three Top 10 singles earning five Grammy nods. B.o.B. was like no hip-hop crossover artist before, writing his own hooks, playing multiple instruments, producing, rapping and singing with charm and charisma. But where was the loquacious mic-spitter of the early mixtape days? B.o.B’s third LP suggests he’s merely been lying in wait. His latest single, “HeadBand” (featuring 2 Chainz), seems more squarely aimed at the strip club than the radio, with the edgier lyrics that he promised would dominate this album. The Future-assisted “Ready” is catchy, but tracks like “Wide Open” and “Throwback” seem unnecessarily crude. The epic “Paper Route” and the incisive “John Doe” fare better, but overall the album finds B.o.B. struggling to reconcile the dichotomy within himself. (C)

ERIC CARMEN

The Essential Eric Carmen (Arista/Legacy)

A great primer on the godfather of power pop. JM: Before he was a liteFM staple in the ‘90s thanks to his Dirty Dancing soundtrack gem (sarcasm implied here), “Hungry Eyes,” Eric Carmen was a founding member of the influential and underrated power-pop band, The Raspberries. This 30-song collection serves as a perfect reminder of just how strong a pop songwriter Carmen was back in the day. Unlikely many cash grabs disguised as “Best Of ” albums, Legacy’s Essential series has always done a stellar job of digging deep into an artist’s catalogue to uncover songs that strongly demonstrate their career’s depth and range. This latest collection is a perfect example: Carmen’s career dates back to the late ‘60s, with a short-lived project alongside Cyrus Erie (their song “Get the Message Out” kicks off this set). But he first started to get major exposure when he founded The Raspberries in the early 1970s. They only had four proper records, but– much like their contemporaries in Big Star– their albums went on to inspire an entire generation of bands (artists as varied as Tom Petty and Axl Rose have cited The Raspberries as a prominent musical influence). Essential includes six Raspberries tracks (including one stellar live one), but the bulk of the songs on this two-disc set focus on Carmen’s solo work, which began in 1976 and continues today (his latest album came out just months ago). Not every track here still holds up decades after its release: “Make Me Lose Control” may have been perfect for its time back in 1988, but clearly had a short shelf life. It’s the deeper tracks here– the ones that didn’t spend a lot of time on the charts– that go to show just how surprisingly strong a songwriter Carmen was… and still is. (B+)

DRUNK CARPOOL, DRAMA & REHAB An Interview with Best-Selling Author Jennifer Weiner BY JENNIFER SMITH WILLIAMS

L

IKE ANY GOOD LITERARY junkie (or general follower of pop culture), we jumped at the chance to grab a chat with best-selling author Jennifer Weiner. You may know her for writing In Her Shoes, which later became a movie starring Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette. Or perhaps you flipped furiously through the pages of her equally wellread Good in Bed. And while we love her for both books, its Weiner’s consistent knack for crafting a really good page-turner that makes us drool over her newest novel, All Fall Down. This one tackles some serious stuff, which you should be prepared for if you’re a veteran Weiner reader. As much as her casual comments about The Bachelor might make you think she’s just a funny girl writing funny stuff, she’s got some deep thoughts going down between the pages of these chick-lit paperbacks. But it’s always done in a comfortable, approachable way. Here, we meet Allie, a 30-something mom struggling to raise a kid, stay married, write a cool blog and do all three well enough to earn somebody’s approval. Her remedy for the weekday drama? A healthy (or should we say UNhealthy) dose of painkillers. Weiner’s books read so quickly that I couldn’t possibly reveal any more about the storyline of All Fall Down, but it only gets worse for our pretty protagonist (meaning, better and better for us readers). Chapters reveal a deep subconscious to the reality an addict lives in. It’s shudder-worthy, but for more than a few of us it hits close to home. That’s what Weiner does best: relating to her readers and then writing it, well. Here are excerpts of a fun and funny conversation we had with the veteran writer. Not only are we excited to finish the new book, but we’re already mentally making room on our nightstand for the next one.

Is there a little bit of you in her? I relate to her in the fact of raising a little girl. I have two of my own (ages 10 and 6), who aren’t nearly as tough as Ellie, but who inspired many moments. Like the screaming, “I Peed on Princess Jasmine” scene? That is straight out of my life. So then how did you go about delving into the personality of an addict? I read a lot of memoirs and blogs and followed Twitter feeds for research on this topic. There were so many inspiring stories, but I think the one that stuck with me the most was about a 70-year old woman undergoing treatment for alcoholism. I mean, this woman was super active in her community– a grandmother. It was mind-blowing to me. You know, you have this picture in your mind of what an alcoholic looks like, and it’s not Mrs. Claus. Who would you say your favorite character is in All Fall Down? I always have a soft spot for my main characters, but I also really like Ellie in this one. She was a lot of fun to write. Is your process the same as it was when you wrote your very first novel? The thing that’s changed the most is when you’re writing your first book, you don’t have an editor, an agent or even an audience, really. You’ve got tons of freedom to write what you want, and no accountability to tell the story a certain way. Now, you know what your readers like. You have to balance your desire to go in a different way with the risk of alienating your readers. There are people out there identifying with your characters and finding comfort in the stories.

Why did you choose writing and publishing as What about your source for inspiration? How Allie’s career in All Fall Down? I liked Andi a lot. You know, she didn’t mince the words about the fantasy suite or what she thought about it. I’m really interested in the new season. I’ve realized it’s not about love, really, but about enacting love. I am a sucker– a TOTAL sucker– for hoping that those two people will fall in love. It pushes buttons for me. THE WHITE ZULU

South African Music Legend Johnny Clegg on Apartheid, Mandela & His Nation’s Future BY BRET LOVE

B

ORN IN ENGLAND, BUT RAISED in South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Johnny Clegg emerged as a revolutionary musical force in the ‘70s and ‘80s by combining African and European lyrics and musical influences that spoke our against government oppression at the height of Apartheid. Known as “The White Zulu,” Clegg started his first racially mixed band, Juluka, in 1969 after falling in love with Zulu culture and musical traditions. The mere act of playing with Zulu musicians such as Sipho Mchunu was illegal at the time, and explicitly political songs inspired by South African trade union slogans didn’t earn the band any fans in the Apartheid regime. Clegg and his bandmates were arrested repeatedly. When Mchunu left Juluka in 1986 to tend his family’s cattle, Clegg formed Savuka, whose Zulu name means “we have awakened.” Clegg, who by this point was teaching Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, became increasingly political on 1987’s Third World Child. The song “Asimbonanga” became a rallying cry for the anti-Apartheid movement, calling for the release of Nelson Mandela and canonizing 3 martyrs of the liberation struggle– Steve Biko, Victoria Mxenge and Neil Aggett. By the late ‘80s, Clegg was as popular in Europe as Michael Jackson. In 2012, he received the South African Presidential Ikhamanga Award, the highest honor a citizen can receive there. And when Nelson Mandela passed away earlier this year, “Asimbonanga” was the emotional anthem sang in the late leader’s honor. Clegg is currently in the midst of his largest North American tour to date in support of his new album, Best, Live & Unplugged. A visit to

South Africa back in 2000 changed my life, so I was truly honored to get a chance to speak with the musical legend about life during Apartheid, his fascination with Zulu culture, what make Nelson Mandela so beloved, and his hopes for the future of his homeland.

What were your early impressions of life in South Africa? My mother was a jazz singer and married a South African reporter, so we moved to Johannesburg when I was 7. South Africa being what it was, we lived in a white area and there were black areas and Indian areas. When I was 8, my stepfather took me into the Townships, where he taught black kids how to play drums. When I was 9 old, we immigrated to Zambia– a democratic, nonracial country. I went from a whites-only school to an integrated school where there were more blacks than whites. Zambia was a golden time for me. Then we came back to South Africa, and I was back in a whites-only school. When I was 14, I met a street guitarist around the corner from where I lived who was playing Zulu music on the guitar. That was the moment that the universe opened up for me.

a culture and found ways to get in there, and then later I got very politically active.

When did you first realize that Apartheid’s days were numbered? 1986 was the pivotal year when the Liberation movement decided to make South Africa ungovernable. They took over the Townships, and the government declared a State of Emergency. There was a feeling that we What was it about the Zulu culture that were reaching a crescendo, spoke to you? and something was going to The Zulu have a very strong tradition of warrior values, WHEN I WAS 14, I MET happen. What are your hopes for the future of South Africa? South Africa has three unique problems. First off, we have to deal with the legacy of Apartheid. There are geographically separated townships which were created as pools of labor for the white cities. Today, the labor force doesn’t live in the city where it works, and has to spend $2-$3 per day on transport, which has to be added onto the cost of labor. If you look at the railway lines that run throughout the country, they went through the areas where the white farms were. The infrastructure of the country is completely representational of the Apartheid policy. We have to find a way to break down those legacies and create more accessibility. The second thing is that we are a country of first and third world makeup. We have traditional, tribal, rural cultures and economies; and we also have very modern, western-developed, urban communities whose children don’t speak a traditional African language. There has to be a road map to enable a conversation between these two groups so that we can move forward together. The third, and biggest, problem is that, while we are doing this, we also have to enter the global economy at a competitive level. We have to finds ways to make our world attractive to investors. I fell in love with South Africa when I first visited 14 years ago. What makes it such a special place for you? In 2009, I was engaged by the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation to do a travel program prior to the 2010 World Cup. We went to all nine provinces and spent 10 days there, looking at landscapes, the communities in those landscapes, and the art they create. It was the most amazing experience. South Africa has a diverse ecological and geographical make-up, from savannah grasslands, to tropical and sub-tropical forests, to deserts and semi-deserts. There are areas along the Garden Route which are National Heritage Sites simply because there are flowers and vegetation not found anywhere else in the world. It’s a place where you discover yourself, because the landscape is so big that you have to reconsider your own position in the universe. It’s such a culturally diverse country that you can travel through any of the provinces and meet different groups of people– urban, rural, tribal, modern, all speaking different languages and having traditional music and dances. It’s a fantastic country to spend time in.

This Month’s Hottest Shows BY SACHA DZUBA

6/03 – JACK JOHNSON

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Jack Johnson is indisputably the king of chillout music. This Hawaii-based singer-songwriter creates surf folk-rock music that is gentle and relaxing, with melodies and lyrics that lead you to reflect on life’s experiences and misadventures. Johnson is touring in support of his recently released album, From Here To Now To You; which debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. His tour continues to pave the way for green touring practices and community engagement initiatives. Johnson’s All At Once campaign (www. allatonce.org) of supporting local food systems and plastic free initiatives will be on-hand to help concert-goers connect with local non-profits, take environmental action and even give them a chance to win watching the performance from the stage. The perfect summer concert to unwind and de-stress, don’t miss the smooth vocals and polished guitar of Jack along with his charming and talented band.

6/04 – MORRISSEY

Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center Before his solo career even began, Morrissey rose to fame and attention in the 80’s with the band The Smiths. Described by music magazine NME as “one of the most influential artists ever”, Morrissey is regarded as an important innovator in indie music. His lyrics have been described as “dramatic, bleak, funny vignettes about doomed relationships, lonely nightclubs, the burden of the past and the prison of the home.” Jangly shoegazing guitars, catchy choruses, and melancholy emotive crooning is what Morrissey’s music is

all about. Buoyed by the successful release of his controversial autobiography, he is releasing his new album, World Peace is None of Your Business in July. Morrissey is back and fighting fit, go see this legendary performer live; don’t miss it!

6/07 – ZAC BROWN BAND

Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood Georgia boy, Zac Brown, is back in his home town. Far from an overnight sensation, the Zac Brown Band have worked hard for their welldeserved success, honing their popularity one night at a time, city to city to become the CMA and Grammy award winning powerhouse that they are today. ZBB has worked with a variety of incredible and legendary musicians, from Jimmy Buffet to Alan Jackson. Their latest EP, The Grohl Session, Vol. 1 features a more rock oriented sound in the vein of the Allman Brothers and was produced (perhaps unsurprisingly) by Dave Grohl. A night of fantastic musicianship and four part harmonies that is sure to feature radio hits “Knee Deep”, “Free”, “Toes” and “Chicken Fried”, along with recent release “All Alright” will hit your sweet spot like a hot plate of down home southern cookin’. Eat it up, yee haw!

6/13 – DAMON ALBARN

The Fox Theatre The lead singer for Blur, one half of the creative minds behind the Gorillaz, Damon Albarn is embarking on an intimate solo tour. Everyday Robots, Damon’s first solo album, is filled with very personal and introspective tracks and content. For the first time, Albarn is opening himself up by directly revisiting his childhood memories and other moments from throughout his life. Known

for disguise and reinvention throughout his other musical projects, Everyday Robots affords the listener an insight into nostalgic regret, subtle and cloudy beauty. Whirring loops and samples provide a bed of safe repose for Albarn’s languid voice and piano to create this new era of eclectic music architecture. A brilliant opportunity to see one of the UK’s most enigmatic and varied artists performing a variety of music from across his entire career.

6/18 – PLAYING FOR CHANGE

Variety Playhouse Playing For Change isn’t just a touring band, it’s a movement created to inspire, connect and bring peace to the world through music. Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke created the concept of Songs Around The World by uniting musicians from across five continents to perform on the same musical tracks. The Playing For Change Band includes: Grandpa Elliot (Louisiana); Clarence Bekker (Netherlands); Titi Tsira (South Africa); Tal Ben-Ari aka Tula (Israel); Jason Tamba (Congo); Mermans Mosengo (Congo); Keiko Komaki (Japan); Peter Bunetta (California); Louis Mhlanga (Zimbabwe); and Orbe Ortiz (Cuba). If you’re curious just what sort of musical mélange this collaboration creates, check out their incredible rendition of “Stand By Me” online. Experience cultural diversity and togetherness through music that inspires understanding, peace, and fellowship across all nations.

6/28 – KATY PERRY

Philips Arena Katy Perry is anything but “one of the boys”. Definitely the “Teenage Dream” of many men, this glamorous, quirky, and poppy lady continues to astound with her stunning and extravagant tour, Prismatic. Inflatable cars, tap-dancing cats, neon mohicans, and egyptian fat-suit mummies merge with brilliant music performance and fantastically acrobatic choreography to create an incredibly arresting production. This live show is a rainbow colored dream of style, fashion, and spectacle. Her latest album, Prism, is sure to be

well-represented in her set choice; along with plenty of fan favorites sure to whip the crowd into frenzy. Expect a burlesque affected fantasia that all audiences members, regardless of age, will want to enter and never leave. This California girl is dazzling.

6/28 – THROWING MUSES W/ TANYA DONELLY

Terminal West Throwing Muses, was the first American band to sign to well known British indie label 4AD. Formed by step-sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, they pioneered a type of alternative rock before the term was widely used. Their sound encompassed elements of post-punk, rockabilly, and folk. Both sisters went on to continue their musical careers in other successful ways when Throwing Muses originally disbanded back in 1997. But the Muses are back again 10 years on from their last release, touring in support of new album, Purgatory / Paradise. The sisters are reunited and Hersh has been accosted by more musical brilliance to share with the world, don’t miss this fantastic quartet!

7/01 - LINDSEY STIRLING

The Masquerade Lindsey Stirling is a truly unique artist; an incredible classically-trained violinist that mixes Celtic folk, modern, classical and electronica with gracefully choreographed contemporary dance. After memorable performances on America’s Got Talent, she was told there was no place for a dancing dub-step violinist. Now signed to Lady Gaga’s management company, Atom Factory, Lindsey says “The same reasons I was told I wouldn’t succeed are the reasons people travel hundreds of miles to see me now”. Check out her self titled album and go listen to her amazing song “Crystallize”; easily available online. The true definition of the emerging modern independent recording artist, Lindsey Stirling shows the world just what can happen when you believe in yourself and your own individuality.

LIVE CHEAP GIRLS!

The Michigan Power-Pop Trio Hits the Road with the Hold Steady & Against Me! BY JOHN B. MOORE

F

OR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS, WHETHER OR NOT you were paying attention, the Michigan Power-Pop trio Cheap Girls has become one of the best things on the indie/punk rock scene. With an effortless series of albums stripped of all pretense, but smothered in fuzzy guitars, brilliant hooks and strong melodies, the band (comprised of brothers Ian and Ben Graham and Adam Aymor) has toured the globe with everyone from Against Me! and Gaslight Anthem to the Bouncing Souls. After a one-album stint on Rise Records, the group has just signed to Xtra Mile Recordings, which will make the band’s latest record, Famous Graves, their first worldwide release in May. Against Me! is taking Cheap Girls back on the road this spring, along with The Hold Steady. So now seemed like the ideal time to check in with singer/guitarist Ian Graham, who talked about the new album, what went wrong with the Rise deal, and reuniting with their longtime producer Rick Johnson. You guys have worked with Rick for a while now. Is it at that point now where you are pretty simpatico with what sound you are looking for? Absolutely. As far as the sound goes– because we essentially play live so much– it’s more of just getting those sounds down for us. He has grown so much with his recording abilities. That first record was… I remember him admitting as we were finishing up, “I had no idea what I was doing. None. I’ve never done this before and basically got this gear and wanted to make a record.” So it’s come a long way since then. A lot of it is just knowing each other for so long. I think I was 15 when we first met. A lot of it is more around the fact that our personalities are so close and we know each other so well and we can get things done so quickly in a way that everyone is happy.

Did he take any offense at all when you decided to have Laura Jane Grace (from Against Me!) produce the last record? Not at all. Laura was actually pretty new at the game (of producing) at that time, and they spent some time on the phone. Rick is pretty easy-going, so I don’t think he takes any offense whatsoever. But it did feel pretty good to all be back together. You guys were on Rise for one record, and now you just joined Xtra Mile, which has put out some great records in Europe. How did you guys connect with them? Well, it was funny. They first approached us around the time we were doing Giant Orange, and I think they were in a kind of brainstorming period, thinking about expanding and being more of an international label. Had you already committed to Rise when you were working on that record, or were you going to record it first and then find a label? Well, we signed to Rise a few weeks before we went into the studio. But we were in a position where we were going to make this record by whatever means necessary. We had the songs and knew we were going to work with Laura, but there was a little scramble at the end to find a label. Obviously that experience wasn’t super ideal if you aren’t with Rise anymore. Did you leave on good terms? I think both parties left on very indifferent terms. I think they were in a period of trying to vary their roster, which is totally cool. They have a very successful label, so they have the ability to try new things. I think they wanted to see what they could do well with… and I think the record did fine. So it wasn’t so much of that as it was that we were very different personalities. We could never come to a point where it felt like we were on the same page. So I think it was more of an evening of conversation when we said, “Let’s just call it a day.”

WE GOT NEXT GODDAMNIT

I realize it’s unfair to ask this, as this album hasn’t even come out yet. But have you started working on new songs? Are you constantly writing? Well, I’m constantly writing in some capacity. Butm to be honest, I haven’t even really thought about it yet. It’s funny because I’ve talked to people about making the next record, but there really are no songs whatsoever yet, which is kind of a rarity. This was the longest time it ever took us to make a record. So I kind of consciously have not been working on anything. I want to get one tour out of the way to kind of see what happens. You’re probably still just learning to play these new songs live. Yeah, definitely… And, as we have more songs, I have a really hard time remembering lyrics. There are certain songs from the earlier records where, if I were to put them on right now, I think I would be surprised by how many parts I had forgotten. I’ve talked to a few other friends, and I guess it’s not uncommon. It kind of bothers me. But I have come to the realization that, once you have 50 songs that you can play live, (remembering them all) might not be realistic.

Artists on the verge of making it big

Latest Project: How to Take the Burn (Creep Records) For Fans of: Jawbreaker, Quicksand and Promise Ring Why You Should Care: Because Philadelphia is currently the kingdom of all things punk rock, which makes Goddamnit the new princes of hardcore.

BY JOHN B. MOORE

W

ITH LOCAL BANDS LIKE THE Menzingers, The Holy Mess, Modern Baseball and Restorations bringing music writers and indie label scouts to the city in droves, Philadelphia continues to add to its argument for becoming the newest punk Mecca. Goddamnit is just one more stellar band from the city of Brotherly Love that combines smart lyrics with blistering, but melodic hardcore reminding folks that

‘90s punk is still alive and well. The band has just put out its debut, How to Take the Burn, a brilliant calling card that brings to mind bands like Jawbreaker, Lifetime and Quicksand. Singer/guitarist Arik Victor, formerly with Super Hi Five, spoke with us recently about the band’s origins, ‘90s hip-hop, and what lies ahead. How did this band first get together? We formed in the summer of 2011. At

one point in time everyone in the band had lived at the Creephouse, where the label used to be run out of. Had you guys played together in any other groups before starting Goddamnit? We were all in other bands. Kyle, our bass player, was in Buglite. I was in Super Hi Five. Jared, our drummer, was in The Vote. Also, Tyler tours with Gym Class Heroes as a keyboard player. I’m actually surprised this name hasn’t been used by a band before. Did you find any defunct band with the same name? Not that I’m aware of. But yeah, we were surprised that the name had never been used by another band. Nobody forgets our name though! Tyler was the last to join the band, right? What did he add to the group? Tyler writes a lot of the music, and he’s also an excellent producer. We wanted him to produce our record before he joined, and the more we talked about it he just said, “Just let me play guitar!” Your influences seem closer to ‘90s hardcore and punk. Is that pretty accurate?

PG 22 • June 2014 • insiteatlanta.com

Definitely. We are a little bit older, and that’s the music we grew up listening to. All the east coast stuff from the ‘90s plays a huge part in what we do. Any influences that people may not be able to catch or might surprise people? We also listen to a lot of ‘90s hip-hop, especially in the van late at night. You also filmed a documentary when you recorded this album, didn’t you? What are you doing with that? We had our friend Paul Gorel come in and shoot some video while we were recording our record because I think sometimes people get real serious when talking about their music. We wanted to show people that we have a cool place to make a record, and that we have fun playing in a punk band. I think Paul captured that. How long have you been working on the songs that made this record? We wrote the songs in about four months and recorded and mixed it over two weeks. What’s next for you guys? We are doing a Midwest tour now, and another tour in August. Also we are going to play a festival this year in Gainesville.

SOUL POWER

Jimbo Mathus on Deep South Roots, Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Demise, and a New Band BY BRET LOVE

B

ORN IN 1967 IN THE HEART OF the Mississippi Delta, Jimbo Mathus was immersed in the culture of the Deep South from an early age. His family was filled with musicians and a love of rootsy Americana– blues, country, bluegrass and folk– so he was sitting in on mandolin by the time he was 8. As a teen he got into rock ‘n’ roll, then formed a punk-rock band called Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves. But you probably know him best as the leader, alongside his then-wife Katherine Whalen, of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Founded in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Zippers– named after a candy popular in the early 20th century– were at the forefront of the mid-‘90s swing revival. Fusing Delta blues, Django Reinhardt-influenced jazz, swing and klezmer, the band had a hit in 1996’s “Hell,” but it was mostly their relentless touring schedule that helped their album go Gold and Platinum. By the end of the decade, the band had gone on hiatus, primarily due to a lawsuit filed by former members and the MathusWhalen divorce. Jimbo went on to rediscover his Mississippi roots with the Knockdown Society, played guitar with blues legend Buddy Guy, and opened his own recording studio in his native state. Now he’s touring in support of Dark Night of the Soul, his second album with his new band the Tri-State Coalition. Mathus recently took time out of his busy schedule for a chat about his Deep South musical roots, what happened with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Tri-State Coalition’s more rock-influenced direction. Let’s start off talking about your childhood in Mississippi. How did those early family musical circles influence your interest in becoming a musician? I grew up in rural Northeast Mississippi,

on the border of Alabama and Tennessee. I started in on the family band at age 6. My area was part of the fertile musical soil that fed musical movements in Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Nashville. Pickers and singers came from these areas to go into studios and on the road to make history. My own family was no exception, as we were ripe with musicians. It also taught me and ingrained in me a very old-timey, social aspect of what real music– free from any commercialism or artifice– is all about. You grew up surrounded by bluegrass, country, and the blues. How did your family react when you got into the rock ‘n’ roll and punk sound? My family always sort of expected radical things out of me. And mom and dad grew up in the ‘50s and ‘60s, so they also dug the rock ‘n’ roll.

I’ve read that you joined the Merchant Marines at age 20, and did a lot of solo traveling. Talk to me about how that formative experience sparked an interest in life on the road. I knew at an early age that my life would be about music and art. I also knew that, in order to create great work, it involved the fringe elements– the earthy, gritty realities of life. I wanted the experience of seeing America (and even Mexico and Canada) on my own terms and to come to my own philosophy concerning music. I hopped trains, hitchhiked, drove, rode riverboats and flat-out walked around all of America before I realized that my real place of interest, power and inspiration was actually back where I began, in Mississippi. The Squirrel Nut Zippers were obviously the channel through which most people heard your music.

BUFFALO SOLDIER

ALL MY MUSICAL PATHS SPIRALED OUT IN AMERICA AND THE WORLD, AND THEY ALL LED ME BACK TO MY OWN BACKYARD.

The thing I’m most proud of was that the Zippers’ music brought all age groups together in the same way that the social family reunions and backyard riverbank pickin’ sessions did as I was growing up and learning about music. In the midst of all this turbulence from the breakup, was there something comforting about going home to Mississippi and opening a studio in Clarksdale? All my musical paths spiraled out in America and the world, and they all led me back to my own backyard. From William Faulkner to Charlie Patton, my home was in my bones. I know your mom grew up in Clarksdale, which I visited for the first time last year. How did the rich Delta blues history of that town inspire your work? My musical family was Scottish, and from the foothills in northeast Mississippi. I first discovered real blues and African American music in the Jook joints ‘cross the tracks in Clarksdale. I developed many relationships and learned much from the black musicians of the delta region. You’ve worked with everyone from Buddy Guy and the Dickinson brothers to Elvis

Costello; written music for Broadway; produced numerous artists; and explored just about every imaginable genre of music. Where do you think this restless creative spirit comes from? What drives it? As long as there are different people with different backgrounds, there will be different new types of art created. It’s the push and pull of the Deep South life that keeps me engaged. Your new-ish band, Tri-State Coalition, seems to be much more of a straightforward rock project than anything I’ve heard you do in the past. What inspired you to head in that direction? I actually don’t agree about the “straightforward rock project” description, as last year’s White Buffalo and this year’s Dark Night of the Soul continue to mine the roots to create new sounds and concepts. The Rolling Stones and The Beatles initially grew out of Jimmy Reed, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, and all of the Deep South artists. They twisted and molded those initial sounds into white rock ‘n’ roll. Therefore, rock ‘n’ roll is every bit as much of an American roots music as Robert Johnson, Bill Monroe or Ike Turner. They are all pioneers from the past that forge links in the chain that I add to.

Jake Smith (a.k.a. The White Buffalo) Breaks Out Via Sons of Anarchy BY JOHN B. MOORE

J

AKE SMITH WAS RAISED ON A SOLID diet of punk rock. But, over the years as a musician, he has settled into a mix somewhere between Outlaw Country, folk and blues. But there’s still a pretty strong punk vibe weaved throughout the music he creates as The White Buffalo. Nowhere is that more apparent than on his latest full length, Shadow, Greys & Evil Ways, a powerful concept album about love, war and killing, spread out over a dozen tracks. Smith, backed by two buddies, is currently coheadlining a tour of the U.S. alongside fellow punk/country/folk badass Chuck Ragan. He spoke recently about the tour, his album, and his recent discovery of The Sons of Anarchy. You are about to start a big co-headlining tour with Chuck Ragan. How well do you know him and his band? I just met Chuck the other day for the very first time actually, for a pre-tour “get to know you” jam. He’s a real good, talented guy. I was fairly unaware of him when the prospects of a tour were brought up, but I did know he fronted the band Hot Water Music. He seems to write good honest music and perform it with everything he’s got, which is a very similar approach to my ethos.

Will you have a group of other musicians with you on this tour, or are you going it alone? I ’ll be going out as a trio with my boys Matt Lynott on drums and Tommy Andrews on bass. Did you start out as a solo artist, or did you initial start out playing music with full bands? I initially started as a solo artist and still tour some as such. The idea of The White Buffalo is that it can be just one man or something larger.

quick after I watched it for the first time. It’s quite a ride.

There seems to be a common thread that ties the songs together on Shadows, Greys and Evil Ways. Was that intentional? Did you set out to write a concept record? Yes, it was intentional. It’s actually a narrative following the life span of a man and woman.

You recently posted a great Springsteen cover of “I’m on Fire.” Was that for a bigger project? Any plans to release it? There aren’t any plans to release it officially. “I’m On Fire” was just a fan-friendly post on YouTube. We had asked fans what cover they wanted to hear from us and that was one most popular.

Can you talk a little bit about the characters that show up on that record? It’s the story of Joe and Jolene White. They first meet as young outsiders, fall in love and start a life together. Thrust into having to provide for a new family, Joey joins the army and goes off to war. He returns a changed man and struggles with readjusting to civilian life. Bloodthirsty, he kills again on American soil and then begins the long road to redemption, finding out that the love of his woman is the only path back to existence. It’s a study of love, war, good and evil.

A lot of folks first heard your music thanks to The Sons of Anarchy. Were you a fan of the show before they started using your music? Honestly, I hadn’t watched it before I had my own music on it, but I got hooked pretty

Your music seems to take just as much from punk rock as country music. Is there one genre that you tend to gravitate towards more? Not really. It’s whatever comes, comes.

I’ve hopefully forged my own sound without boxing myself into any genre. There are elements of punk, blues, country, folk, and rock and roll. It feels like American music. What’s next for you? This upcoming tour with Chuck is my main focus. That, and writing for the next album.

MURDER WAS THE CASE

FREDDIE CHECKS IN

BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

Breakout Star Ian Anthony Dale is Worth Investigating

T

HE SON OF AN OLYMPIC HOCKEY player, Ian Anthony Dale once considered a career in pro sports. But when sidelined by an injury as a teen, he turned his interests toward acting. After graduating high school with best actor honors, his path was clear. After a stint at the University of Wisconsin, he relocated to Los Angeles and quickly began work in television and film production. He’s since built an impressive TV resume that now spans over a decade, with appearances in Surface, Day Break, 24, Criminal Minds, American Horror Story, The Mentalist, and all of the CSI locations. The handsome actor is currently starring in TNT’s new detective drama Murder In The First, produced by Steven Bochco. Probably best known for his recent role as Adam Noshimuri on the CBS remake of Hawaii Five-O, the affable Dale recently spoke with us about his career, the new series and the current state of television. How would you describe Murder In The First? It’s a serialized drama, correct? Right. It’s a murder mystery, and essentially we’re going to focus on one case throughout the course of an entire 10-episode season– from the committing of the crime through the investigation of it and the trial. Tell us a bit about the debut case. At the center of the case is a Silicon Valley whiz-kid, named Erich Blunt, played by Tom Felton. His character is very much like a Mark Zuckerberg, if you will. So we ask the question, what would happen if Mark Zuckerberg was suddenly embroiled in a double murder and homicide investigation? Its really intriguing and I’ve got to say I can’t wait for people to see it. The single-case approach is a great plot device. I love it, because there’s not a lot of repetition and, for me, I love that. Nothing feels stale and you get to be on the adventure, along with the viewers. We’ve got such a great cast, led by Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson, and we have a lot of good ingredients in it. It cooks, right from the first episode. How do you describe your character, Detective Jim Koto? My character is a very young and ambitious lieutenant for the San Francisco Police Department. At my first meeting with the writers, they explained that Jim is the kind of person who wakes up every morning, looks at himself in the mirror and says “I’m gonna be Mayor of San Francisco one day.” He’s very comfortable in the cop environment. He’s very by-the-book. But he flows effortlessly between the cops and the politicians. There’s a great production team behind this series. You can’t go wrong with [legendary television drama producer Steven] Bochco in charge. Yeah, I still pinch myself sometimes when I realize I’m working with Steven Bochco. I grew up watching NYPD Blue with my folks and a little bit of LA Law and Hill Street Blues, too. It’s a blessing and I hope we are fortunate

enough to do it again and again. But that will all depend of if we get enough eyes on the show. Have you discussed the possible format for future seasons? The plan, if we are to get subsequent seasons, is just to have one new case every season. So the characters that inhabit the homicide department and the district attorney’s office, all those characters will remain the same, but the suspects and such will be a fresh crew and storyline and we’ll go another ten episodes investigating that case. You started in TV in 2002, well past the post-HBO boom in quality programming. But in the past decade, everything about the industry has changed rapidly. How has it affected you personally? You’re right. Well, I’ve noticed a big influx of movie actors coming over to television and it’s made the landscape that much more competitive for everyone. On the one hand, yes, we are experiencing probably the greatest time ever in television, in terms of content and quality. The amount of work makes it more competitive than ever before. But I feel very fortunate that I managed to come into the business when I did, because if I was trying to break in now, it would be really challenging. The old traditions have completely changed. It was a tough business when I got in and it’s gotten a little tougher. What’s your next project? We just wrapped Murder In The First, and I just bought my first house. I have a carpentry background and now I’m about to move in and I can’t wait to apply some of my carpentry skills to the new place! Maybe you can turn the home renovation project into a new HGTV show. (Laughs) You know, maybe I could set up a few cameras in my shop and just let ‘em roll. I don’t know who’d want to watch it, but you never know. Murder In The First debuts Monday, June 9 on TNT. Bates Motel Star Freddie Highmore Discusses Life as Norman Bates

FANATIC SUMMER A Monthly Sports Wrap-up VIDEOGAME GUIDE S BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

BY BRET LOVE

UMMER IS TRADITIONALLY A SLOW period for video games, thanks in large part to competition from blockbuster movies, concerts, vacations and, well, being outside. But, despite the fact that we weren’t able to get our hands on some of the season’s biggest titles (see: Watch Dogs, MLB 14: The Show) before our deadline, here are a few games that’ll keep your fingers tappin’ during the dog days of summer…

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

(Activision) Platforms: 3DS, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One Director Marc Webb’s sequel to the reboot of Marvel’s beloved franchise was a jumbled mess, stuffed with too many bad guys and not enough focus. This title, set alongside the events of the film, has similar problems. On the plus side, there’s the revamped web-slinging system, which is immersive and, at times, exhilarating. On the downside, there are too many villains, not enough character development, sub-par graphics, and an overall lack of creative ideas. Here’s hoping the inevitable sequel fares better.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: A REALM REBORN COLLECTOR’S EDITION (Square Enix)

Platforms: PC, PS3, PS4 With stellar graphics and user-friendly game play, this MMORPG offers an opportunity to explore the realm of Eorzea either alone or with friends, embarking upon epic quests, battling mythical monsters, and picking up unique abilities and gear along the way. The impressive Collector’s Edition contains art cards, an art book, a CD, a movie, and a code key that allows you to get exclusive in-game items. All in all it’s an exceptional package for an exceptional MMO, with an especially engaging storyline.

KIRBY TRIPLE DELUXE (Nintendo) Platform: 3DS Kirby may look all cute and cuddly– like the result of a kickball mating with cotton candy– but he’s kind of a kick-ass character. With his powerful suction, he can inhale trees, obstacles, and even his enemies, copying skills ranging from archery to becoming a scorching fireball. Triple Deluxe offers multiple forms of gameplay: You can go on a 3D sidescrolling adventure to save the kidnapped King Dedede, go headto-head with friends in “Kirby Fighters” battle mode, or play action-oriented games like Dedede’s Drum Dash. No matter which mode you choose, it’s all a big ball of pink, puffy fun. LEGO THE HOBBIT

(Warner Brothers) Platforms: 3DS, PC, PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii-U, X360, Xbox One From Indiana Jones to Harry

Potter, in my eyes the LEGO video game franchise can do no wrong. Their latest title is arguably more fun than the films on which it’s based, allowing gamers to play as Bilbo Baggins and a madcap party of dwarves as they journey from the Shire across Middle Earth to reclaim the lost Kingdom of Erebor. There’s an endless array of challenging quests along the way, not to mention orcs, trolls, Gollum, and of course the fearsome dragon Smaug. If there’s any complaint to be had, it’s that the game doesn’t include the forthcoming third film in the series, The Battle of the Five Armies.

MARIO GOLF WORLD TOUR (Nintendo) Platform: 3DS I hate golf, but I love Mario, so the fact that I enjoyed this title probably counts as a win. Expanding on the N64 and GameCube iterations of the franchise, World Tour offers both naturalistic and Mario-themed courses, with the option to play as your Mii or classic Mario characters. There are 10 different colorful courses (or 16 if you want the DLC), course-specific challenges, powerful Item Shots, online tournaments, and of course the oodles of playful personality you expect from a Mario title. It ain’t rocket science, by any means, but it is good, mindless fun. TRIALS FUSION (Ubisoft) Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One There aren’t many sports I wish in retrospect I’d participated in during my youth, but motocross (which wasn’t really a thing back in my day) speaks to my inner thrill-seeking daredevil. Trials Fusion is probably the closest thing you’ll find to those high-flying, gravitydefying races, offering both the current game and a Season Pass to access future content. The gameplay is an adrenaline-charged mixture of reality (in terms of capturing the physics of motocross) and hyper-reality (CRAZY course designs), making for an exciting track experience whether you’re playing alone or as part of a worldwide tournament. WOLFENSTEIN: THE NEW ORDER

(Bethesda Softworks) Platforms: PC, PS3, PS4, X360, Xbox One This WWII first-person shooter franchise has been around since the earliest days of gaming, beginning with the Apple II version in 1981. The New Order– the first new title since 2009– follows the efforts of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz to stop the Nazis in an alternative-history 1960s Europe, wherein the Germans won WWII. The graphics, combat and stealth mechanics are arguably the best in franchise history, and the story (featuring an appearance by The A-Team’s Dwight Schulz as baddie General Wilhelm “Deathshead” Strasse) makes it one of the most engaging war titles I’ve ever played.

“DETROIT doesn’t have an NBA team, because they’re somewhere 30 miles north of here, right? They’re in Auburn Hills, right? Now that Sacramento is building an arena downtown, they’re the only one not in an urban core. The only one. It’s really not good business. It’s nothing against Auburn Hills, Oakland County or [executive] L. Brooks Patterson. An arena in the middle of a field is not an ideal thing.” –Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert

Though we’re still shaking our heads that GILBERT AND THE CAVS were able to score the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft for the third time in four years, we know there is enough talent in this deep talent pool to make other teams better. That said, the unrestricted free-agent shelf isn’t bare either. (Note: LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony aren’t unrestricted free agents but they do have early-termination clauses in their contract.) Here are five names that clubs should inquire about this summer: 5) Paul Pierce, Brooklyn; 4) Kyle Lowery, Toronto; 3) Luol Deng, Cleveland; 2) Pau Gasol, LA Lakers; 1) Lance Stephenson, Indiana. “I don’t agree with that assessment. I think I was at least as good as everybody else in camp. I think you guys that know me well know I’m pretty honest when it comes to my assessment. When I say I don’t play well, I didn’t play well. When I say I played well, I think I played well. I think I trained and played very well in camp. I think I was one of the better players. If I had gone in and thought I didn’t deserve it, I can live with that. But that’s not the case here… I’m not angry. I’m disappointed. I’ve spend most of my adult life and the majority of my life in general dedicating myself to this sport in this country and representing my country. I was really looking forward to the opportunity of playing in another World Cup and helping this team.” –LANDON DONOVAN, after being excluded from the 23-player U.S. World Cup soccer team SPAIN has waited four years to defend its World Cup crown. On June 12, that wait will be over when group stage play begins at the 2014 event in Brazil. Thirty one teams will battle the Juan Mata-anchored squad for the title, but only one will hoist it at Rio

LANDON DONOVAN

de Janeiro’s Estádio do Maracanã stadium on July 13. Here are five other facts you should know about the month-long party on the pitch: 5) The final costs for the 2014 World Cup are estimated to be between $1416 billion; 4) The March 30 episode of The Simpsons centered around Homer being a referee at the World Cup; 3) Though Rio is the epicenter of the action, matches will take place in 12 cities, a record for World Cup play; 2) All 64 contests will be shown across three networks — ESPN, ESPN 2 or ABC; 1) The event will use the GoalControl-4D system, the first goal-line technology ever employed for World Cup pay. And finally… The May 24 starting pitching matchup between Washington’s Stephen Strasburg and Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole was just the third duel of No. 1 overall draft picks in the last 15 years… Final-round TV coverage of May’s Tiger-less Players Championship was down 54% from the 2013 event that Woods competed in… No matter how things turn out for Triple Crown-seeking horse California Chrome in the Belmont Stakes, jockey Victor Espinoza’s place amongst the all-time greats is secure, seeing as how he’s won more than 3,100 races over his 22-year career… Kudos to the auto racing world for electing Wendell Scott (stock car’s Jackie Robinson) into the NASCAR Hall of Fame last month.
