UTUMN HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY favorite time of year. From the cool, crisp weather to the rich hues of the changing leaves, there’s something magical about these months before the craziness of the holidays holds sway over everyone. There is no shortage of things to do and places to go within an hour’s drive of Atlanta, in the foothills of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you want to go for a hike, pick apples, or simply take a scenic ride to see the leaves change, north Georgia is a remarkable place to witness the beauty of nature in all its splendor. And autumn is the perfect time in which to do it! Autumn is prime apple-picking season in north Georgia, and the small town of Ellijay seems to be the state’s unofficial apple capital (perhaps due to the Apple Festival held there every October). From B.J. Reece Orchards (reeceorchard.com) and Hillcrest Orchards (hillcrestorchards.net) to Red Apple Barn (redapplebarn.com), there are plenty of perfectly good picking places to choose from. Mercier Orchards comes highly recommended. If you go late in the season, you’ll want to show up very early– preferably right when they open at 10AM. For $10, they’ll give you a small plastic bag that you can fill to the brim with every kind of apple you could possibly want, from Fujis and Pink Ladys to Cameo and the treasured Honeycrisp. The friendly employees encourage you to taste them as you go, and will help you out with simple tools to reach the massive fruits near the tops of the 10’-12’ trees. You can buy Mercier’s apples by the bag at grocery stores and farmer’s markets around the city, but somehow they seem to taste just a little bit sweeter when you pluck it from the tree yourself. And, at just $10 a bag, you can afford to pick plenty for sharing with friends and family. (mercier-orchards.com)
HIKE THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS
Located less than 90 minutes from metro Atlanta, north Georgia is a haven for outdoor adventurers and casual nature-lovers alike. There are nearly 20 state parks located north of the city’s I-285 perimeter, from the mountain biking trails at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder to the horseback riding trails of Watson Mill Bridge State Outdoor Recreation Area in Comer. The hiking is exceptionally beautiful at this time of year, when the weather is cool and leaves are beginning to reach the peak of their autumn colors. From the 729-foot cascading waterfall (the tallest east of the Mississippi River) of Amicalola Falls and the 4,784 foot summit of Brasstown Bald (which offers a 360-degree view of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee), to the striking rock outcroppings of the 4.8-mile West Rim and Waterfalls Trail at Cloudland Canyon and the impressive canyons of the 2-mile long, 1000-foot deep Tallulah Gorge, the
area boasts natural wonders aplenty. Check out the Georgia State Parks website for further info. (gastateparks.org)
NAVIGATE UNCLE SHUCK’S CORN MAZE
4520 Hwy 53 East, Dawsonville 1-888-OSHUCKS Uncle Shuck’s offers the biggest corn maze in Georgia, with four miles of trails stretching across 12 acres. There are two main mazes with new design every year. Each one offers checkpoints along the way to help visitors track their progress. A third, smaller maze is available for small children. Of course, Uncle Shuck’s isn’t just about the maze: There’s also goats to feed, ponies to ride, corn cannons to shoot, pumpkins for sale, old-fashioned hayrides around the cornfield, and a nightly bonfire and marshmallow roast. And, since it remains open until late November, it’s one of the few seasonal attractions in Georgia you can visit between Halloween and Thanksgiving. (uncleshucks.com)
RIDE THE BLUE RIDGE SCENIC RAILWAY
241 Depot Street, Blue Ridge • 877-413-TRAIN or 706-632-TRAIN Trains have played an integral role in Georgia’s history (particularly the Civil War), and this budget-friendly attraction in north Georgia offers the equivalent of an immersive history lesson. Running out of the downtown Blue Ridge depot, the train takes visitors on a scenic 13-mile ride along the beautiful Toccoa River to the twin border towns of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee– a 125-year-old route. Volunteer conductors and “car hosts” are a veritable fontain of information, keeping kids entranced with colorful stories while the grown-ups enjoy the picturesque views. In the fall the focus is all on the foliage, with late October through mid-November typically an exceptional time to see autumn leaves at their brightest and most beautiful. A word to the wise: At this time of year, advance reservations are strongly recommended. (brscenic.com)
CANDLELIGHT NIGHTS
130 West Paces Ferry Road NW Atlanta, GA 30305 • 404.814.4000 The Atlanta History Museum is holding Candlelight Nights Thursday, December 4th and 18th from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Step back in time and experience Christmas past with a candle-lit stroll through a crisp wooded trail that transports you to the warm glow of the holidays. Visit each of the three historic houses to experience how Southerners celebrated Christmas during the pioneer days, the Civil War era, and the 1930s. Guests experience holiday traditions of years past with interpreters and special activities. Enjoy food for purchase and visit one of several cash bars for your favorite libation. AMERON MACKINTOSH’S spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, is playing at The Fox Theatre through November 2. Hailed by critics as “bigger and better than ever before,” this production boasts many exciting special effects including the show’s legendary chandelier, new scenic and lighting designs, new staging and choreography. The beloved story and thrilling score will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this Phantom one of the largest productions now on tour. We got to go behind the scenes of the show and speak directly with actress, Linda Balgord, who plays Madame Giry in this new production. Tell us about your role in Phantom of the Opera: I play Madame Giry who is the ballet mistress at the opera house. She’s in charge of the actors and quite bit of staging for the shows. And she is a mysterious person because she brings notes from the Phantom to the managers of the Opera House. And it remains a mystery as to what exactly their relationship is, but in the second act you find out a little bit more. She’s kind of between the underworld of the Phantom and the onstage world of the opera. Tell us about this version of Phantom, how is it different from the original show? It’s the same beautiful score, it’s the same story. What’s really changed is the physical set of the
show. There has been a lot of technological developments since the show first opened 27 years ago, so they we are able to take advantage of that technology in a great way. And also the direction is a little bit different. I think they retell the story in a very intimate way…for such a big story on such a big set. It’s exciting because touring sets generally aren’t that big anymore and we have 21 semi trucks that it takes to move our set and all our costumes. It’s an opulent production. And how has the audience reaction been? As good as when the show started 27 years ago? Absolutely! The music is thrilling. I’ve had so many people say they love this production. They love the original but they really love this too! They are just thrilled to see something so spectacular. What is your favorite scene? I love the opening scene. The show opens with auction, years in the future. And we go back to tell the story of what happened. And there is a transition where we go back in time and that is one of my favorite moments of the show.

DIRTY DADDY
Bob Saget on Comedy, Tragedy & Growing Up
very jazz-oriented, and I would just write and write. It was crazy.
BY BRET LOVE
A
BOUT 8 YEARS AGO, NOT LONG after The Aristocrats It seems like you’ve had different phases in your career: The came out and re-ignited Bob Saget’s career, I had the good family-friendly Full House/America’s Funniest Home Videos era, fortune of catching him live at Roswell’s late, great Funny the potty-mouthed Aristocrats era, and now a more mature era. Farm Comedy Club. Was it a conscious decision to let your fans in on this darker side As a lifelong fan and student of comedy, it was one of the of your life, or is it just coming with age? best shows I’d ever seen– a rapid-fire stream of consciousness I’m growing as a person, and I haven’t even touched the surface ramble that seamlessly blended scripted and improvised jokes, of the body of work that is going to come out of this time. I’m not heartwarming earnestness and beyond-blue non sequiturs, as bluish in my standup, if you were to analyze it, but I’m doing audience engagement and pure self-indulgence of the ego and id. what I find funny. I still think it’s funny to have 18-year-olds in my Because Saget and I were both long-time friends of comedian/ audience and teaching them not to put their unit in the knot-hole Funny Farm owner Marshall Chiles (who now owns the Laughing of a tree. It’s like a public service announcement. It’s a gift of the Skull Lounge), I wound up getting to hang out with Saget before age I’m at, and how they know me through television. For the most and after his show, marveling at the long line of comely lasses part, I want things to count more than they ever have. I don’t want waiting for a chance to get face-to-face time with the artist to be bluffing through my stand-up or acting. It’s not something I formerly known as Danny Tanner. Not taking Chiles and Saget up take lightly. on their offer to go party in Buckhead at 2AM remains one of the greatest regrets of my career. Did the death of your friend Robin Williams make you reNearly a decade later, Saget’s life and career are once again at a examine your priorities? turning point. How I Met Your Mother recently came to an end, I took his loss very hard. I met him when I was and both his mother and good friend Robin 21 years old, and he is mentioned throughout the Williams passed away this year. He recently book. How he left us is obviously not how I will released a best-selling book, Dirty Daddy, that remember him. What made you decide it was time to write a book? It started as a showbiz-driven thing, where someone said that people want to offer you money to write a book. Finally we came up with the idea of a memoir-type piece. It ended up being about death, comedy and my testicles. I wanted to call the book “Death and Testicles,” but they didn’t think that was going to be good. Dirty Daddy melds the two ideas people have of me. The alliteration was there, and now people attack me for calling a book Dirty Daddy. It’s also the name of a porn film from years ago, and I didn’t want to be in that company. What was your writing process like? I had a wonderful editor, Mark Ching, with Harper Collins. He was the only person I spoke to about the book. My process was to make it like a conversation with a best friend. It had structure, in that I knew what each chapter was named and I knew what each chapter was going to cover. I knew I was going to do a chapter about losing my two sisters, and I knew I’d have to do chapters that wouldn’t make some people happy– “Relationships I’d Rather Not Talk About” and “Things I Shouldn’t Have Done.” I basically did it like I do my standup, which is a similar exercise, but not at all a similar process. It’s not improvised, but has a lot of riffing. It was
A lot of comedians seem to have a dark side. Do you think there’s any truth to the idea that comedy is a therapeutic way to exorcise demons? There is therapy that comes out of talking. But actual therapy is also a good thing for personal problems. For some comedians, the audience is their everything– their best friend and therapist. I don’t work that way, but I understand it. I do shows Friday and Saturday, and there is nobody I know there. I don’t have a friend with me, and I’m not trying to date. For me it’s like a little town meeting where I’m going to get to know some of the people. It’s a genuine relationship, and how you navigate that and how you use it is what sets people apart from others. When the audience knows that you’re saying things that are poignant, silly or meant to make them laugh, that’s a very personal thing you have with a room full of people. Where do see the field of comedy now, and how have you watched it evolve? I came out to L.A. in 1978, when comedians started to become rock stars. Robin had started to do well, and Steve Martin was filling 10-20,000 seat stadiums. The people that weren’t on television were trying to get on television. What I like about where comedy is now is that it has more of a spoken word feeling

to it. The comedians who’ve been doing it 10-15 years have a peacefulness and security about their musings. It’s almost like the Largo scene involved into a style of comedy. Sarah Silverman paved the way with the 50-person audience in her HBO special. That kind of comedy is more like you’re talking to your friends. There’s something special about the last 10 years of comedy. I’m at a place now where I’m learning from the people who do standup now. For example, Louis CK is going to take a story that’s seven minutes long, giving it the length of time it needs to have, with his perceptions and his way of looking at it. That’s what all comedians do– look at things from the outside and present it to the world. People aren’t having to get to the laughs quickly. They’re getting to tell whatever their truth is, or vent their anger over something. Now that How I Met Your Mother is over… How I Met Your Mother was a lovely, lovely gig that I got to do a couple of hours a week to narrate it. But I have to keep reminding people that it was a lowly gig. You take me to any non-English speaking country, and I have nothing to do with the show. …OK, but how do you see your career evolving from here? I’ve always loved directing. I’ve directed a bunch of long-form things over the years, including Dirty Work. I did this thing called For Hope, that Dana Delany starred in, after my sister passed away. There are a lot of positive things in the works and they are all moving forward, but I can’t talk about them yet.

DEAD DIVA made us into Los Angeles. Newer shows, like MTV’s excellent teen drama FINDING CARTER, NBC’s CONSTANTINE and Starz’s SURVIVOR’S REMORSE, do make Atlanta look like the active, history-rich and personality-filled setting that it is. CONSTANTINE, like THE WALKING DEAD, infuses Atlanta with a touch of the supernatural. Matt Ryan plays comic character John Constantine, an exorcist battling the demons rising up from Hell. In the pilot, a map of the city shows that half of Atlanta is controlled by the Devil. It should prove very fun each week to see parts of EAV go straight to Hell. SURVIVOR’S REMORSE, set in the world of pro basketball, deals with a family on the rise in the city. Boston ballplayer Cam Calloway has just scored a major payday to join Atlanta’s team, and his dysfunctional relatives, including his mother played by Tichina Arnold, have joined him in town to strike it rich. The city looks fantastic, but the characters also engage in debates about the city’s history, its racial tensions and its new, diverse culture.

N HONOR OF THIS BEST OF Issue, this month we focus on the shows that best represent Atlanta. The ones that certainly garner Atlanta the most attention are AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD, now in its fifth season, and Bravo’s REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA, returning soon with a seventh season. DEAD films in Senoia, though earlier seasons have turned several area landmarks into a bloody, zombie mess. The first season memorably featured its hero Rick (Andrew Lincoln) riding into town on an interstate surprisingly empty of traffic and ended with the explosion of the CDC. The Georgia State and Emory campuses have both been overrun by the undead on the show, which certainly grabs attention for the city - even if it doesn’t make us look like a place you’d want to visit. REAL HOUSEWIVES spotlights many Atlanta hotspots and shopping locations, at one point reiterating that our city is the “Black Hollywood.” But it also features lots of hairpulling fights, bitter divorces and husbands headed to prison. All of this is “real.” You can go to the mall and run into people like Miss Lawrence or Kandi, and it does make the city look like a lot of fun. Many shows that are filmed in town, amusingly, are designed to make our city look so nondescript that it could stand in for someplace else. The VAMPIRE DIARIES has turned metro Atlanta into Mystic Falls, Va., for several years now, and The Originals makes us into New Orleans. HALT and CATCH FIRE turns our town into 1980s Texas. Lifetime’s recently cancelled DROP

DECONSTRUCTING CRAIG
Funnyman Ferguson is the Anti-host on His First Game Show
B
EST KNOWN FOR HOSTING THE Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, the Scotland-born comic has also sold out Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. His standup comedy specials have earned a number of awards, including a Grammy nomination for last year’s I’m Here To Help. His distinctive voice is featured in the recent “How To Train Your Dragon” film series and he’s been seen in The Big Tease, Life Without Dick and Chain of Fools. He’s also published a novel and won a Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. Now he’s the host of Celebrity Name Game, a syndicated daily half-hour of television that pairs celebrities with civilians in order to guess the name of a prominent figure from entertainment, politics or sports.
You’ve been a stand-up comic, an actor, a musician, co-star of a very popular sitcom and then host of an extremely popular, avant-garde talk-show. How does that history lead to a game-show? I think what happens is, if you’re a high school dropout and you don’t make a plan, you ultimately end up hosting a game show. I didn’t have a plan; I’ve always done the thing in front of me. The only through-line in all of it, really, is I always did stand-up. Even back when I was in the band, I did stand up. It’s a skill, which I think has many different areas where it can be of use. I think it’s of use in late-night. Clearly other people do, too, because there are other stand-ups who do it, of course. And to do it in game shows, it seems like the right fit. Acting
has always been something that appeals to stand-up comedians and sitcoms have always drawn stand-up comedians. I think it’s stand-up without a good plan about how to proceed.
Are you a game show fan? And are you aspiring to break Alex Trebek’s recent record of game show hosting? Well, the truth is I approach this the way I came into late-night, which is, I kind of drifted into it. Of course I was aware of it, but it wasn’t like a big part of my world until I kind of happened upon it. So, yes, I’ve looked at other hosts, but if you know anything about me, and recent news will confirm it, I don’t want to do anything for 30 years. A 10-year run in late-night is long enough for me and 10 years of doing this, if we should be so lucky, will be just fine. I don’t want to do it forever. As research, did you study any of the other game show hosts for their own particular style? Well, not really, maybe a little bit of Steve Harvey at Family Feud, because he exists as himself, inside it. He doesn’t approach it like the way a stand-up approaches it. And that’s what I hope I can do, is that you bring whatever talent, if you have any, or whatever it is unique to your own sensibility, to the format. Steve, I think, has been very successful with Family Feud. He made it his. But right at the very beginning of doing late-night, I remember both Howard Stern and David Letterman, and in fact, Regis Philbin, who has, of course, hosted a game show, all said that the thing you have to do with any show is make it your own.
How do you want to approach this show and not make it just another Hollywood Squares or something, where everything is prewritten or canned? It’s exactly the same way of approaching late-night; that’s why I went at this forum on a game show. There were a bunch of game show formats around, but this one works for me because it’s the loosest in the terms of there’s not a lot of crap that I need to get through, and explanation. It’s a pretty easy game, so it’s wide open for improvisation.
If you had your choice for a celebrity partner, who would you want on your team? Always Betty White is the answer to that question. Celebrity Name Game airs at 6 and 6:30 p.m. daily on CW 69. Check local listings for time and channel in your area.
The idea of celebrities playing games is popular now with a number of shows, including Jimmy Fallon and his endless supply of dumb stunts. Why do you think the viewing audience likes seeing celebrities in gaming situations? I think it’s a twofold. I think, one, audiences like seeing the humanizing effect of somebody being as informal as that, because once you’re playing a game, it’s a little more difficult to remain aloof. If you’re playing beer pong or you’re playing Celebrity Name Game it’s difficult to maintain that sort of grand distance. And I think audiences like that. Audiences, particularly television audiences, I think, crave intimacy from the medium. I think the guests like it because the pressure to remain grand and aloof and to somehow appear sparkling or inspire a conversation is off. All you have to do is play the game, so the guesswork is out of it. I think, for both sides of the equation, that’s the attraction for it.

TRACK SUITS 8 HOME RELEASES Honored Guest
BY BRET LOVE AND JOHN MOORE
As I am writing this, my frequent partner in crime, TJ Kenney, is perfecting the very latest Track Suits mix for Mixcloud. The mix culls the songs I write about each month in this, The Greatest Singles Column in Human History, along with a few other choice morsels I didn’t have time to wax poetic about. Although I normally perform this important service, this month I have turned over the reins to our favorite future laptop superstar, TJDJ. Show your love by checking him (and our latest mix) out at the address below.
DUCK DYNASTY: SEASONS 4-6 Say what you will about the Robertson clan– the Louisiana duck hunting magnatesturned-reality TV stars– but their blend of family-friendly comedy, he-man action, and proud American redneck culture clearly works. Critics may carp that the Robertsons are really just yuppies in camo, yucking it up for the cameras. But, outside of Modern Family and The Goldbergs, what other TV sitcom features so many colorful characters, such infectious chemistry, and such an earnest celebration of family values? Don’t hate, appreciate.

APHEX TWIN
“minipops 67 [120.2] (source field mix)” Aphex Twin has influenced so much of what is considered “modern” music, that sometimes it’s easier just to mention a few of the people and things that absolutely wouldn’t exist without him: every great Radiohead album after OK Computer, Four Tet, Burial, Postal Service, Caribou, Kid606, Boards of Canada, deadmau5 and Skrillex. “Minipops” is the wild man’s new song & it is as beautiful, warm and inclusive as anything he’s ever created. Go get it and pay homage to a great man.
THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS FT MIGUEL - “This Is Not A Game”
Just as one wild hero releases a track that plays wonderfully nice, another hero decides to get their Armageddon on with this track from the Lorde-curated soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockinjay. Sounding like The Bomb Squad took the brown acid, “This is Not A Game” is trap-hop entrance music for Mad Max, diminished only slightly by the weak soul mewling of Miguel. Again, get it and pay homage.
THE LATEST DVD, BLU RAY & VOD RELEASES
MAD MEN: THE FINAL SEASON, PART 1 Historically, 1969 was a tumultuous year: U.S. involvement in Vietnam reached its peak, the Civil and Gay Rights movements were a powder keg of controversy, Woodstock ignited the counter-culture revolution, and Americans landed on the moon. It’s similarly chaotic for SC&P, as Don returns under strict conditions, Jim vies for control, Ted grows increasingly despondent, and Bert delivers the season’s most memorable scene. Creator Matthew Weiner seems intent on going out with a bang, not a whimper. MONEY FOR NOTHING: A HISTORY OF THE MUSIC VIDEO As the closing narration points out, “the music video is a dinosaur.” But that’s what makes this doc so compelling: It’s a look back at the music video, tracing its evolution from its earliest inception six decades ago, through the ‘80s (when pop stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna mastered the vehicle), the dreadful hair metal phase, the minimalism of the alt-rock era, and the rise of hip-hop excess. Much like a good music video, the doc is over too soon.

THE VINCENT PRICE COLLECTION II Watching Vincent Price always brings back two fond memories, one of my late grandfather (a dead ringer for the legendary horror actor) and one of seeing House of Wax in 3D at the Fox Theatre as a kid. The 7 classic films on this Blu-Ray collection tend to be more silly than scary, but there are several gems, including The Last Man on Earth (an adaptation of horror classic I Am Legend), the original House on Haunted Hill, and the Roger Corman-directed The Raven (which also features Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff).
If you would like to hear this month’s tracks--and a few more great ones we didn’t have room to write about--check our “Track Suits Mix” at: mixcloud.com/tracksuits. (Special thanks to TJDJ and my brilliant sib Jody for their help in curating this.)
THE WONDER YEARS: THE COMPLETE SERIES Nostalgia junkies rejoice! This mammoth 26-disc set features 115 episodes of the best family dramedy to surface in the late ‘80s/ early ‘90s, finally out on DVD. The series centered on pre-teen Kevin Arnold and his family, living in a nondescript suburbs during the late-1960s, and influenced myriad other shows that followed. Despite the obvious appeal to Baby Boomers, the show’s writing and relatable plots managed to pull in viewers spanning several generations.
Retro Pick: “0078h” M83 once looked like the band to point the way forward after the game-change of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless. Here was a band able to mechanize the feeling of MBV’s guitar assault with a combination of repeating keys, falling beats, gorgeous noise and ne’er a guitar in sight. “0078h” is the apex of those heady early days, a spasming wall of sound that masks a powerful, almost tear-jerking melody.

THE GENTLE GIANT
Imposing Georgia-born Actor Omar Dorsey is on the Verge of Big Things BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
I
N THE CHRISTMAS-RELEASED, CIVIL Rights story Selma, actor Omar Dorsey portrays the late Rev. James E. Orange, a beloved aid to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mainstream history books tend to overlook Rev. Orange’s story, but Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson and other renowned servants of the movement know his name well. The imposing preacher stood well over six feet tall yet his demeanor was one of peace. Dorsey, 39, carries himself in much the same fashion. The Decatur native didn’t stomp into Hollywood with big roles; instead, he took the appropriate baby steps, going from a bit player in Road Trip, to guest roles in TV hits like Bones and Castle, to meatier parts in Showtime’s Ray Donovan and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. If handled properly, Selma will go a long way to letting the public know of Omar Dorsey’s immense talents and Rev. Orange’s importance. Tell me about the long road from Decatur to Hollywood. I went to the Dekalb School of the Arts at Avondale. I fell in love with the craft there. I was doing musicals, ballet, singing, opera and all that stuff. It just really got to me. So, I was like, “This is what I wanna do.” I went to Georgia State and studied film and theater there. I started Shakespeare there. I thought I was going to be a Shakespearean actor. I was with Alabama Shakespeare [Festival] and Atlanta Shakespeare. I did a play at Center Stage Theater. I saw an agent there. She was like, “I really like you.” She helped me. I think my first audition was for Remember The Titans. I got real close on it, but I didn’t get it. I didn’t realize getting that close to success your first time out [was rare]. I was really down. But like a week or two later, I auditioned for Road Trip and ended up getting that. That’s how everything started from there.
Why was it so important for you to be a part of Selma? I’m from this city. It was the heart and soul of the Civil Rights Movement in my opinion. You’re talking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Martin Luther King Sr. and James Orange. These people were superheroes to me. I ran into Ambassador Andrew Young at [soul food restaurant] Paschal’s yesterday. We saw each other during filming. These people are bigger than life to me. The reason we’re here is because of the groundwork that they did. I had to be in this movie. I told my manager, “I don’t care what else I have going on. I have to be in this film.” So, we made it happen.” It’s one of those things where I’m just extremely proud to be a part of the process, especially me playing a great man like Rev. Orange. It’s beyond words. Give my readers a little backstory on Rev. Orange. He was a civil rights leader but he’s also a union leader. He’s a “gentle giant.” I don’t know if you know the story, but he went to Chicago to talk to the gangs. He was a man of nonviolence. He got beat up but he never fought back. He was about 6-5, about 300 pounds. He was a mountain of a man, but he had that nonviolence about himself that he didn’t allow them to suck him in. I was talking to Ambassador Young, and he was like, “He was the man. Everybody knew him.” He wasn’t going to fight back, but you knew not to mess with him. He had that benevolence about himself. From where you’re standing, what’s the state of quality acting roles for AfricanAmerican males? Most roles are made for a 35 to 45-year-old man, which is the age range that I’m in right now. When I first started, I was 20 years old. I played college students or something simple like that. Now I’m late 30s. Now I can play doctors and lawyers and things of that nature. I’m having a ball right now. This is a fun age to be at right now.
I WENT TO THE DEKALB SCHOOL OF THE ARTS AT AVONDALE. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE CRAFT THERE.

HATTATUDE & LONGITUDE Anchorman’s Character Machine David Koechner Wears it Well BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
B
EST-KNOWN AS THE BIG hat-wearin’, “Whammy!”-shoutin’ sports announcer Champ Kind in the popular “Anchorman” movies, comic actor David Koechner has enjoyed a widely varied career that includes films, television and theater. From his first big notice in the ‘95‘96 cast of Saturday Night Live to the recent “Full On Koechner,” his You Tube comedy channel, the affable Missouri-born comic wears many hats as he assumes a myriad of offbeat characters. Now on national tour as a self-proclaimed “R-rated” stand-up, he tells jokes, recalls ribald stories and even sings a few songs. As he prepped for his “Together Again” comedy tour that brings him back to town this month, he spoke with INsite from his home in Los Angeles. You wear a lot of hats, in real life and on the heads of your characters. Yeah, that’s true. But you’ve got to decide, before you put it on, if you can pull it off or not. I’ve had dads come up to me at my kids’ school and go, “I’ve tried to wear that hat and I just can’t do it!” Who were your early influences? My dad and I always used to watch Abbot and Costello and the Marx Brothers. But when I was 13, I saw “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” for the first time and it blew my mind. And that was the same year that Saturday Night Live debuted, and that further blew my mind.
meeting with [executive producer] Lorne [Michaels] and I got hired. Did you enjoy shooting “Anchorman 2” in Atlanta? It was awesome. We were all staying around midtown. A lot of great restaurants, I stayed at a Loew’s Hotel, and that was beautiful. We just had a good time.

COMEDY
JUST LAFF IT OFF!
F
OLLOWING A 10-YEAR STINT AT the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Atlanta-born comedian George Wallace is celebrating the holidays with a two-night homecoming run of his “I Be Thinkin’” show at the Punchline. The gregarious comedian has an incredible thirty-eight year career with thousands of live performances. Now happily back in his hometown he made some time out of his busy schedule to sit down with INsite. Now that your Vegas run is over for now, you’ll have more time to spend in Atlanta. That’s exactly right. I’m actually gonna do shows around the world but I’m starting off in Atlanta, at the Punchline on Thanksgiving weekend. When did you first try doing comedy? I used to sell advertising in New York and called on a club called The Comic Strip. After I finished my sales pitch I said, “Oh, by the way, I have a little act.” That was a Thursday and they said, “Come on in tomorrow night and let’s see what you got.” So that was a Friday night and I’ve been on stage ever since that night in 1976!

There’s a market for everything.

For about half of the ‘80s, you were out on the road, opening for music acts. Yeah, I never wanted to be a television star or anything like that, I just wanted to learn how to become a comedian. So I did it in the round, outdoors, on racetracks, everywhere. I went from the Tonight Show one week to opening for Natalie Cole in front of 17,000 people, outside, the next. Then I went on to George Benson, Diana Ross, Helen Reddy, Paul Anka and Tom Jones. Then after about ’85 or so, I headlined all the comedy clubs around America and did the Tom Joyner Morning Show at the same time.
They say opening for a musical act is one of the hardest gigs for a comic. Is that true? They say it is but I don’t know. Hell, if it’s not hard work, I don’t want it. REVIEWS BY BRET LOVE, LEE VALENTINE SMITH AND JOHN B. MOORE
ELIOT BRONSON Self-Titled
(Self Released)
slimmed down the line up a bit, as well as their influences (Assuming The Apples In Stereo and The Kinks are in constant rotation in the tour van). Donna McKean and Tim Brown trade off vocals - each a strong singer without coming off as too polished - and this latest effort finds the band adding layer upon layer of guitars and strings. Songs like “Tom, What’s Wrong?” and the fantastic album closer, “Tonight is Out of Sight,” are both standout tracks, but to be honest there isn’t a single song on this record that doesn’t deserve to be included. It may have taken 12 years, but Lunchbox Loves You was certainly worth waiting for. B
The Posies Three albums into his post-Brilliant Inventions solo career, singer-songwriter Eliot Bronson continues to refine and redefine his sound. He’s never strayed far from his folk roots, but he has incorporated rustic Americana, high-lonesome country, blues, and honky tonk kick into the mix. This self-titled album is his most cohesive collection of tunes to date. Recorded to analog with producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell) in Nashville, the music has a relaxed, stripped-down vibe largely missing from his sophomore album with backing band the Yonder Orphans. Cobb’s organic mix shines the spotlight squarely on Bronson’s sensitive croon, which seems to grow richer and more emotive with time. Compared to the rocking vibe of Milwaukee, these new tunes are achingly melancholy: Titles like “You Wouldn’t Want Me If You Had Me,” “Just Came Back to Tell You I’m Leaving” and “Never Been a Friend of Mine” offer a clue to the pervasive mood. “Comin’ For Ya North Georgia Blues” and “New Pain” inject a little uptempo energy, but this is a mostly mellow album filled with dusty backroads, moonlit nights, reflection and regret. For fans who have followed Bronson’s evolution since his Decatur duo days, it should prove a welcome development. He’s never been more naked and vulnerable as a songwriter. B+

Lunchbox Loves You (Jigsaw)
Brilliant jangle pop band resurfaces
Failure (Omnivore Records)
Debut from one of the Power Pop greats gets all kinds of extras
The Posies were one of the best Power Pop bands to come out of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s (just take a moment to let that sink in…). And thanks to nostalgia and a slew of Generation X-ers now running boutique record labels, the world gets to rediscover a number of sadly over-looked beauties from the not too distant past. The good folks at Omnivore Records (a recent trove of new and re-issued releases) have just put out The Posies fantastic 1988 debut, Failure, on CD and vinyl with eight bonus tracks. The album, though not the band’s best (that distinction belongs to 1993’s Frosting on the Beater, followed closely by 2010’s Blood/Candy) is still a great snapshot of a young band raised on Cheap Trick and Big Star, playing jangly guitars and tight snares under the sweetest harmonies. Songs like “Ironing Tuesday,” “Blind Eyes Open” and the beautifully sentimental “Paint Me” are begging for new life in a new decade. The bonus tracks, though not necessary are still a damn fine extra, with demos, a live take on “Believe in Something Other (Than Yourself)” and an instrumental. Here’s hoping Frosting on the Beater gets similar treatment! B+
Oasis
(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? [Chasing the Sun Edition]
After more than a decade off, the Berkley power pop band Lunchbox is back with what is easily their finest collection of songs. A little goofy, but immensely fun, Lunchbox Loves You is 10 indie pop songs brimming with jangly guitars, sing-along choruses and plenty of handclaps. Infectiously optimistic, the band has PG 20 • November 2014 • insiteatlanta.com
(Big Brother Recordings) Classic sophomore effort from Brit Pop heroes gets new audience It’s a year short of the album’s 20th anniversary, but I’m sure Oasis fans will forgive the transgression now that (What’s the Story) Morning Glory is getting a proper three-disc deluxe roll out. The sophomore album from the most continuous sibling duo since The Kinks, is the band’s best, even managing to eclipse
“Creeping” and “Sugar” remaining the other clear choices for best tracks.

Sings The Great Diva Classics (RCA) Lady Soul takes on the competition and emerges as the undisputed Queen.
their nearly flawless debut. It went on to sell 22 million copies across the globe and dominated the radio and MTV for most of 1995, churning out single after single (“Wonderwall,” “Roll With It,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger” and “Champagne Supernova,” among others). Yes, the Gallagher brothers were obnoxious and a lot of their lyrics tossed together like word salads, but the pop songs were/are undeniably great. This new collection – also available on vinyl – includes the original album, a collection of B-Sides and extra tracks along with a third disc of demos and live songs. Of the three CDs, the B-Sides collection is particularly impressive with fantastic covers of “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” (you didn’t actually think there wouldn’t be a Beatles’ cover did you?) and a stellar take on “Cum on Feel the Noize.” Nearly two decades later the album still lives up to all the hype. A-
2:54
Self-titled (Bella Union Records)
Early ‘90s moody pop rules the set in the new
debut from UK murk-meisters Thurlow. “Revolving,” the lead track on 2:54’s debut, opens with an ominous boil, suddenly shuttered by a sinewy beat and Colette Thurlow’s spiraling, careless vocals, snugly pulling the reins tighter, following a deceptively catchy chorus and then a welcome release. Sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow are the forces at work at the center of the timely band. The self-titled debut casts a moody pall on the usually murky world that used to be lumped together as shoegazers, but now is so diverse it really defies categorization. Armed with producer Rob Ellis’ know-how, the album song-cycle careens and expands through dimly lit scenarios, offering deliberately paced chaos, disguised as subtle gloom. “You’re Early” follows, with smoldering, subdued sensuality with delivered a sly British smirk. Beguiling, offbeat hooks abound with “Watcher” rising to the top of the pile as a pure pop gem. An early ‘90s sensibility reigns throughout, with
Aretha Franklin’s newest album features the soul diva taking the Tony Bennett route and offering a tribute to the work of some of her peers. Not that she has many. In fact, most of the new album seems a bit of a misstep, on paper at least. Blame omnipotent Svengali Clive Davis for the calculated idea. But hey, it’s worked before, with Rod Stewart singing the Great American Songbook classics, or Lady Gaga dueting with the ubiquitous Bennett. But once the new record plays, Franklin’s raw, and yes, soulful, interpretations of music’s other great female vocalists makes perfect sense. It highlights her takes on Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman,” Etta James’ “At Last” and even Georgian Gladys Knight’s signature piece, “Midnight Train to Georgia.” As expected, she doesn’t linger within the familiar bounds of each track. Approaching each new tune as a jazz musician, she improvs and vamps through the lively arrangements with unbridled joy. The result is a wild ride on familiar roads. Even Streisand’s well-worn pop staple “People” gets a go and the results are simply superb. The real highlight of the set, and should-be hit single from the disc, is her rousing rendition of “At Last.” Sure, it’s been done to death, but here the Queen Of Soul resurrects it to its proper place in music history. It’s worth the entire price of admission for the well-crafted collection, or just go buy the single track and revel in the royal glow of her majesty. Aretha Franklin plays November 8 at the Fox.
Bad Luck
Cold Bones (Tragic Hero)
Reheated Pop-Punk that leaves a bad taste When people dismissively ask “You still listen to punk music?,” they are actually thinking of bands like the four-piece Bad Luck. This group from Long Island and Daytona Beach, represent all that made the genre such a muddled mess of mediocrity in the early aughts. Pop music and seventh grade poetry masquerading as “Emo” all got mislabeled with the Punk tag, perverting a genre that was doing just fine without all the unwanted attention. This 10-song Cold Bones, would have fit in perfectly on the 2002 Warped Tour. The band checks off just about every box on the cliché list (snarled vocals? Check; Acoustic ballad? Check; Duo vocals with one dude screaming? Check). If this record had come out a decade ago it likely would have been all over Fuse and TRL and the band’s t-shirts would have made it to the window at Hot Topic. But, it’s 2014 and the world has finally (thankfully) moved on. C-
Road Warriors
This Month’s Hottest Shows BY SACHA DZUBA
11/5 – DUM DUM GIRLS
The Earl Beginning as a bedroom recording project from lead singer Dee Dee Penny, lead singer and songwriter of the Dum Dum Girls; they create a moody mixture of 60’s surf , 80’s dark wave and post-punk. Their refreshing sound brings shades of Blondie, Siouxsie, the Cocteau Twins, and the Pretenders into aural memory. Signed to the now legendary Sub Pop Records, there is a classic rock and roll sound at their core that they wrap tightly in swirling shoe gaze guitars and fuzz/noise guitars and dark baselines of post punk. along with sultry vocals from frontwoman Dee Dee. Introspective, sometimes haunting, always lovely and currently touring in support of their latest album release, Too True; the Dum Dum Girls will not disappoint.
11/8 – PRIMUS
The Tabernacle The return of the “original” and arguably bestloved lineup of Primus; consisting of bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim Alexander (last performing with the boys back in 2008); along with the Frog Brigade Ensemble. Innovative in their diversity by embracing and combining psychedelia, improvisation, sounds of jazz fusion and metal to create eclectic musical unpredictability. This particular tour is extravagant and theatrical, as they spread the musical madness of their homage to Gene Wilder and David L. Wolper’s, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; recreating the entire soundtrack in their own image. Not only are there 5 golden vinyl copies of their album available to
find (which give you lifetime Primus passes), but they’re also selling their own chocolate! Les says “we had to come up with another income stream, so we’re making chocolate bars because you can’t digitize a chocolate bar — yet.” Don’t miss your chance to get a Mr. Krinkle bar, Professor Nutbutter bar, or a Bastard bar and sing along with their musical insanity of an Oompa Loompa sideshow!
11/9 – REVEREND HORTON HEAT
The Earl All the glitter and glam from the neon streets of Las Vegas, there’s an elvis-like swagger to the psychobilly of Texas-native Reverend Horton Heat. Their music is self-described as “country-fed punkabilly”, mixing country, punk, rock-a-billy, big band, and swing often with humorous lyrics. After slowing down with their countrified previous effort Laughin’ & Cryin’, the Reverend and company are returning to their speedy psychobilly roots with latest album, REV. The crazy frenetic energy of their live shows and their hilarious and demented sense of humor truly endears them to any audience. The mighty Reverend is bringing his rockin’ tent revival to town, go getcha some.
11/14 – JENNY LEWIS
The Buckhead Theatre Jenny Lewis has had success in many different artistic areas, a singer/songwriter, musician, and actress who was the primary vocalist for band Rilo Kiley. She has also recorded and performed with The Postal Service, contributed vocals to Cursive, Elvis Costello and the Imposters, and worked with the Watson Twins. Jenny is touring in support of her solo efforts and latest release, The Voyager; which boast an incredible line-up
of contributing musicians. Her album is an extremely personal record, helping her deal with the death of her father, the break up of Rilo Kiley, and debilitating insomnia. Shimmery synths, postpunk guitars, electronica, pop, with some nods to Cream, Bangles, and Fleetwood Mac. Blunt and honest, with a quick wit; the intense fulness of her music is a testament to her ability to transcend and break through to the other side of loss and the ending of one part of life to begin again.
11/15 – YANN TIERSEN
Terminal West Known on this side of the Atlantic chiefly through his beautiful score for the film Amelie; it is sad that we aren’t acquainted more readily with Yann Tiersen’s other works. Tiersen has a whimsical and sometimes melancholy sound which borrows from chanson, musette waltz, street music, French folk music, minimalist, classical, avantgarde, and rock. Oftentimes deceptively simple, you can hear influences in his music from composers Erik Satie, Chopin, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. Though his music often has an incredible filmic quality, Tiersen himself has never claimed to be a film composer; his music will haunt you with beatific European charm. Infinity is his even more intriguing latest release; discord and transformation, layered vocals and instruments create drone and folk mixtures with melodies that peek out like shafts of sunlight from behind the mounting clouds. His music and melodies foster images of love, narrow cobblestone streets, and child-like discoveries; come discover the incredible Yann Tiersen.
11/18 – THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE
The Masquerade Hailing from Toronto, The Birthday Massacre is the perfect blend of 80’s electronica, heavy guitar riffs, moody and evocative melodies; horror and lush darkness blended with childlike innocence. There are elements of Depeche Mode meets the Cure, dancey dark electronica with the lovely added measure of gothic babydoll singer Chibi. Her energetic, cute, presence brings vo-
cals that perfectly match the dark fairytale style of their music. Their latest album, Superstition, continues their fascination with the macabre, mysterious, and fairytale-esque. Do not miss this fantastically melodic and heavy darkwave band with vivid style and sound that is undeniably their own.
11/22 – STEVIE WONDER
Philips Arena Living legend, singer, songwriter, and musician; Stevie Wonder is bringing his classic album Songs in the Key of Life out on tour, to be played in its entirety. Through his career he has amassed 32 #1 singles and received numerous awards, including 25 Grammy awards. He is also a designated U.N. Messenger of Peace with special focus on persons with disabilities; continuing to affect change toward societal progress and peace. “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”, “Superstition”, “Isn’t She Lovely?”, I can name tons of hits that this man has amassed over the years; one of the original Motown greats, he’s used and explored elements of pop, rock, gospel, jazz, R&B, jazz, soul and all things in-between. This is an amazing opportunity to hear this near-mythic musician perform his landmark album Songs in the Key of Life from beginning to end. Don’t miss it!
11/22 – ANBERLIN
Center Stage Anberlin presents an alternative pop/rock sound that brings to mind an Emo version of Third Eye Blind, along with aspects Fall Out Boy and 30 Seconds from Mars. Having been together for 12 years, this is their final tour. Their latest and last album, Lowborn, lyrically addresses the band’s end and history while musically continuing to build on their previous sounds and styles; melding new wave and rock, heavy guitars and synthesizers. Their high energy performances are punctuated by the stage antics and polished vocals from frontman Stephen Christian. This is sure to be an emotional and electrifying show. The end of a long and fantastic era, come celebrate and wave farewell to Anberlin.

Obviously this book will inform a lot of people, but what made you want to write it in the first place? What was the one thing that made you say, “I have to put my story out there?” It was just the mere fact that people would ask me how it was growing up with James Brown. It wasn’t really the domestic
And it comes at perfect timing with the movie and the new documentary. You know, it’s nothing but divine intervention, or my dad up there, nudging God! Originally “Get On Up” was supposed to come out in October, then it was pushed up due to the production schedule with Universal, so it was moved to August. Well, with my book, I’d started three and a half years before, so I wasn’t sure when it was going to be done; wasn’t sure if I’d be finished when it was out, or not. I didn’t really know how the whole thing would work, since it was my first book. When it was completed, then the film came out early. My publisher asked if we should we move it up earlier. I said, “No, let people see the film, get that whole take and then they can learn a little more about dad on a different level.” It worked out well. It’s not like people need to be nudged to want to learn about James Brown. But the film should turn on a whole new batch of fans. And [director] Tate Taylor and [star] Chadwick Boseman actually met with the family before the production started, right? We, my sister and I and our mom, were consultants on the film. Jill Scott’s character was dad’s second wife, my mom, Deedee. They came down to dad’s home, the

home my sister and I grew up in. We went through the house and just everywhere. From where dad got his hair rolled, to where he slept, to where he took showers and where we had family time. They were able to get a lot of the essence of what it was like for him to be at home and to be a father and a husband and to get the story from us. What did you think of Chadwick in the role of your dad? We were thoroughly impressed with Chad’s performance. I told him, “You are definitely going to get an Oscar nod!” I really hope that happens for him, because I think he did an amazing job. It’s a very complex story to tell in two hours. You have to make it interesting for people. It can’t be from when he took his first breath to his last. You can’t have everything in between in there, you’d have a series or you’d be in the theater all weekend. There’s just no way to do it. The good thing is, HBO has picked up a documentary and it’s coming out October 27. And it’ll give more detail about his civil rights background and his political background and a lot of the things he did and took hits for, even in his music career. Is the family involved in that one, as well? Being part of the estate, we always know what’s going on and what people want to do. We talked to the director and we know the producers; they got our blessings. Mick Jagger is producing this, as well. So this is a kind of continuation of “Get On Up.” He thought it was very important to go a little bit deeper and we’re grateful to him for that, and wanting to tell the story. We’ve been involved as much as we can be and they keep us in the loop. I would love to run my dad’s business day by day but I probably
wouldn’t have a life of my own if we had to do that. It’s just amazing: the clearances, the this, the that; so many things come in on a daily basis. Tell me about The James Brown Family Foundation. My sister, Deanna Brown Thomas is the president, and it’s a continuation of things that were important to my dad. We thought it was important to continue some of the things he loved to do, his charitable things, like his turkey and toy giveaway. But also, what was near and dear to his heart was music in the schools. So we try to do after-school programs and do what we can to bring music or the arts more to the forefront and back into the schools. We have a group called JAMP, James Brown Academy of Music Pupils. I just have to give kudos to my sister, because she really has taken it on as her mission to make sure that these kids have music and they’re exposed to it and it’s just a great thing. And your own life is busy now, too. Oh yes! I’m still a pharmacist, I received my doctorate in pharmacy. I work for a home health infusion company and I’m quite busy. I stay busy and I have two kids, teenagers, so I’m a really busy person now, but it’s great right now. I’ve teamed up with the YWCA of Northwest Georgia and they have a huge domestic violence center in Marietta, to co-chair the kickoff of the Purple Purse Challenge. I’m also involved with Break The Cycle, too. And with Domestic Violence Month here, I’ll be very busy! There’s so many people who need a voice and they just need a little bit more help. I thought I was a very strong person, but when I look back, I’m like wow. It’s all a learning experience for sure. And it’s a teachable moment for sure, to be able to talk more about it all - awareness and healthy relationships.

SISTERS FIRST
Atlanta Duo Larkin Poe Keep the Peace BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
R
OOTS ROCKERS REBECCA AND Megan Lovell have had an incredible year, from playing with old friend Elvis Costello on tour to backing Connor Oberst on David Letterman’s show, to well-received sets at Glastonbury and Newport. Their new album Kin is receiving the professional treatment, with a promo team in place and the support of a brand new label owned by Restoration Hardware. The duo recently spoke with INsite about their new album, famous friends and keeping family harmony on the road. Kin is a very southern-centric title for your album. Rebecca: It is, but four years ago when we started, we named ourselves Larkin Poe as a kind of homage to our great, great, great, great, grandfather. His name was Larkin Poe. But it took us the entire four years to realize that the word “kin” was hidden in the band name. It never occurred to either one of us until the graphics were ready for the album. It was a happy accident. Megan: We ended up naming it Kin only about three days before it was pressed. And it’s a very subtle nod to your sisterhood. Rebecca: It really is. It feels like it’s an accident that’s sort of in the genetic code, like it’s meant to be, and we like that sort of stuff. You’ll probably encounter a slew of Edgar Allan
Poe fanatics because of the name recognition. Rebecca: And you’re right, there is that connection. As kids, we grew up obsessively reading Edgar Allan Poe but we didn’t find out until in our early teens that we were indeed related to him. We went to a family reunion up in Tennessee somewhere and there’s a genealogist in the family. She’d done some back-checking and here we are, 14 or 15 years old and absolutely obsessed with him and she goes, “Oh, by the way, we’re related to him.” We kind of lost our marbles in that moment and had a little pass-out. We love the connection and we’re such fans of his work!
And the implied literary connection is cool. Rebecca: And we’ll take it! Whether or not there actually is any trickle-down effect, I highly doubt it, but we like to think that maybe there are some ghostly remnants, within the blood. There is already a considerable amount of interest in the album, which is great for any debut. Rebecca: This is our first album where we actually have a label and a team in place and a single being pushed to radio. We’re kind of in awe of the whole process. We’re so used to being independent because we were independent for years, so to let up that control and see what a creative team can do with our efforts is pretty awe-inspiring, it feels really good. Everyone’s liking the music, and obviously for us, that’s a huge relief. Your previous efforts sound nothing like this
one; there’s a huge growth from the earlier stuff to now, just in the span of a year or two. Rebecca: When we started writing for this record, we had our sights set on a very different goal. On the road, we’d been working in more electric sounds and Megan’s playing mostly slide guitar and lap-steel and I’m playing a lot more electric. It’s been about a year and a half since our last project, Thick As Theives and this one, and we’ve had time to really get out on the road and do a lot of touring. Obviously that changed your writing style a bit, as well. Megan: We had written separately before, and had never really written together. We kind of call it sibling rivalry; maybe that kept us from writing together. But finally, when we started writing for this album, which was last November, we buckled down and decided to write together, which is a new thing for us. How did it go? Megan: It was seamless. We had no idea how easy it would be to write together. And I think that’s why this album sounds a lot more like “us.” And many bands never find that seamless spot. Whether it’s The Beatles or Indigo Girls, you can usually tell who did what. Rebecca: Exactly, you can hear the difference and for us, I think, we were finding that was where the majority of our arguments were stemming, anyway. We really genuinely get along good as sisters. We’re on the same page and we’re able to get on the road and tour for eight weeks
at a stretch and not absolutely maul each other. So for us to finally be able to break through that barrier, felt like we’ve become so much closer in the past six months and that’s really awesome. We’re sisters first, bandmates second. So what’s next? This year is planned out, but then what? Another album? Rebecca: When we wrote this album, we had upwards of 50 songs, ready to go. So we already have a big pool, but we’re very impatient; we can’t slow down. If it were up to us, we’d have about six albums out by, maybe, March of next year! So we’ll see. Really, it’s about supporting this album and seeing what it can do. Megan: This year has just been so fun and so many experiences we’ve never had before. Hopefully, we can say the same about next year!
CARRIBEAN SON
Reggae Artist Ky-Mani Marley Follows in His Famous Father’s Footsteps BY BRET LOVE
T
HE SECOND YOUNGEST SON OF legendary reggae artist Bob Marley, Ky-Mani Marley (whose mother was Jamaican table tennis champ Anita Belnavis) was born in 1976 in Falmouth, Jamaica, but relocated to Miami at the age of 8. He started singing, rapping and DJ’ing in his teens, experimenting in the studio with his brothers Damien, Julian and Stephen. A label bidding war (which was won by Gee Street/V2), high-profile collaborations with Pras and P.M. Dawn, and roles in two Jamaican films came soon thereafter. By 2007 he had followed his brothers to the top of the charts. Radio, his fifth album, hit #1 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums Chart in its first week of release on the strength of an accessible mixture of roots reggae, R&B, hip-hop and pop music. It also earned Marley a fan in singer David Lee Roth, who gave him an opening slot on the recently reunited Van Halen’s world tour. Now, Ky-Mani (whose name means “Adventurous Traveler”) is touring in support of his sixth album, Evolution of a Revolution. We caught up with him as he prepared to play Grand Cayman’s Spring Splash to chat about his roots, his famous family, and how Caribbean culture shaped the man he is today. You spent your first eight years in Jamaica, but your mother
WE’VE ALWAYS BEEN A CLOSE FAMILY, WITH A GREAT SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY.
raised you single-handedly. What role did your father play in your life? I lost my dad when I was five years of age and moved to Miami when I was eight. But I remember stories my brothers would tell me about my dad picking us up when he was in Kingston. That was a very busy time [in his career], so as far as family time, there wasn’t enough of that. Which is understandable, because he had to step forward and fulfill that prophecy. But he still plays a very important part of my life today. I was raised without a father, but I’ve always had conversations with my mother, my grandmother and my brothers about what my dad would want for us and how he’d want us to go about it as disciplined children.
When you grow up the son of a Marley and the brother of Marleys, is it a given that you’re going to go into the music business? No, that’s not a given. We’re not steered into the music business. My older brother Ron does coffee, and my sisters are into designing and various other things. But then you do have the Marley 5– Ziggy, Damon, Julian, Stephen and me. We choose to strive in music. Was there a certain age when you realized that this is what you wanted to do with your life? My career started in a strange way: I was at a friend’s house who played a sound system, and one night he asked me to give him a Dub take. I said, “I’m not a singer.” He said, “It doesn’t matter.” So I started to sing. A producer walked into the studio and said, “You have a nice tone. Maybe you should give this a shot!” I started going to his home studio every Saturday for two hours. Even during the process of writing and recording my first songs, it didn’t dawn on me that music was going to be my career. I didn’t grow up wanting to be a musician. As a child, I would rather be playing football or basketball. But now it is a passion of mine, and something I love dearly. How did the roots of Jamaican culture impact the man you
ultimately became? Well, the music of Jamaica speaks of revolution– of an oppressed people who, in order to survive, have to become rebellious. Jamaican music has always been at the forefront of the movement to unite Africa, even more so than Africans themselves. When Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, the majority of the “Free Mandela!” songs were coming outta Jamaica. We’re a very small island, but what we stand for makes us leaders on a global forefront, and a lot of our message comes through in our music. So, as a man, Jamaican music gives me the courage to go out there and speak up for what’s right. What was it like growing up with your Dad’s legacy? Did it influence you one way or another in terms of your musical career? It’s overwhelming to describe what it’s like to be part of such a great legacy. This man had so many people around the world who look up to him, for so many different reasons. There are no words for what I feel when I’m in some remote village and there’s no electricity or running water, but here comes a little 5-year- old running out in a Bob Marley t-shirt. It is beyond amazing for me. Seeing what he means to so many people and what his message is, that motivates us continue to carry on his legacy as much as we can, but doing it in our own right. How do you work with and interact with your brothers? We’ve always been a close family, with a great sense of responsibility. We know the legacy we are coming from, and what that means to so many people. We know what our father would want of us, and we as a family try to stay within the guidelines of what that should be. Outside of that, we’re still human beings, just like the family next door. We argue, we fight, we hug, we make up, and we continue living. For years we have thought about doing an album with everybody together. We toured together for months around the world, and you would catch us performing together at certain times. So we are a very close family. There is never anything going on that anyone is in the dark about. insiteatlanta.com • November 2014 • PG 23

DIRTY NIL
Connects with Fat Wreck Chords Record Label and Talks New Music BY JOHN B. MOORE
T
HE GUYS IN CANADA’S DIRTY Nil weren’t exactly fan boys of the Fat Wreck Chords record label growing up. “That definitely wasn’t our world when we were growing up,” said Dirty Nil bassist Dave Nardi. “…I think we all grew up pretty classicrock leaning for a long time.” But the band certainly found a fan in label founder Fat Mike, who offered to put out the band’s latest 7”, Cinnamon/Guided By Vices. Now, the rest of the world is quickly starting to find out what Mike saw in this three piece: a catchy frenzy of distorted guitars and loud drums. Nardi was cool enough to answer some questions recently via e-mail, covering off on everything from connecting with Fat Wreck to plans for a full length… eventually.
record once we’ve got a handful of songs and then release them in whatever format makes sense. Smite was all pretty much brand new songs. Cinnamon, our latest 7”, is kind of an outlier. It’s an older song that we brought back, and paired with a brand new b-side to make a 7”. Have you thought about putting out a full length? A full length is definitely in our thoughts. It’s not something we’ve ever strived for, but it’s a goal for the future. We’re always writing and working on new things, so when there’s a batch of songs that make sense, a full length will come. How did you first connect with Fat Wreck Chords? We had a mutual friend with Fat Mike who passed along a couple of our records to him, and he contacted us directly to ask about putting out a single. We happened to have a couple songs we were looking at releasing at the time, so it made sense for a one-off pairing.
You guys formed years ago in high school, but have suddenly been very busy. When did you decide to put more focus on the band? THE DEAD MILKMEN After a 2011 Release, the Group is Back with a New Album
BY JOHN B. MOORE
A
fter taking more than a decade and a half off, Philadelphia’s greatest punk band, The Dead Milkmen, surprised fans in 2011 with a new album. Many assumed it was the band’s swan song – including some in the group - but The Dead Milkmen are back this fall with an even better follow up, Pretty Music for Pretty People. After more than 30 years of making records, the band’s satire is sharper than it’s ever been and it’s playing a little less sloppy. Just a week before the record’s release, the entire group was cool enough to answer some questions, debating everything from the current state of punk rock in Philly; recording now versus in the early ‘80s; and whether or not punk rockers should collect vinyl. After so much time off, a lot of people were thrilled when you finally released The King in Yellow in 2011. I think many assumed that was the last album we were going to get. When did you decide to go back into the studio to record another full record? Rodney Linderman: With The King in Yellow, many of those ideas seem kind of unfulfilled. I listen to it now and I think we should’ve chopped a verse here or added a bridge or chorus. So I kind of wanted a do over. Dean Sabatino: I don’t think any of us wanted to just play the old songs over and over again and then tour as an “oldies act.” We have all kept up our musical activities over the years in one form or another so it seemed natural for us to begin writing new material. How does writing and recording nowadays compare to when you guys were first starting out? Have you changed your approach to writing over the years? Rodney: Thank Aqua-Buddha for DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations). DAWs enable us to sketch out songs and then send to rough versions to each other for review. DAWs have made it much, much easier. I would just send out most of a song via email with the subject line of “Songwriting Help Needed”. For example, I got stuck while writing “Dark Clouds Gather Over Middlemarch,” so Dean sent a guitar part that saved it. Dean: I agree with Rodney that it’s much easier to collaborate now using home studios and sites like Dropbox to exchange working files. We have a directory on there that we load up song ideas like firewood - ready to burn through.
Do you plan to tour when the album comes out? Rodney: We have jobs, so that prevents any full-scale touring. We’ll still play some shows PG 24 • November 2014 • insiteatlanta.com
here-and-there because there are still people turning up at our live gigs who say “I’ve waited 25 years to see you live.” I’ve fallen out of love with playing live shows, so that sort of keeps me going. Also, its fun to test Daniel Graves’ Law: One month after you play [City X], you’ll get a tweet saying “Please play [City X]”. Dean: I’m hoping we play a bit more after the release of this album. We’ll see what our schedules allow and if people will have us play. Dandrew: T’would be nice, but not very likely. When you guys reunited for those shows in Philly and Fun Fun Fest, did you know that the band was getting back together or did you look at it as a one-off reunion? Rodney: I was so certain that that would be our last show that I tossed my beloved DX-11 synth into the audience. When I got home, my wife greeted me with “You dumb fuck, you might as well have thrown money.” Dean: I don’t remember talking about keeping it going until after the shows. We didn’t want to jinx it maybe. We had fun playing the Philly warmups and then Austin – and then meeting afterwards it seemed like something we’d want to cautiously keep doing as long as it was still fun. Dandrew: Rodney did, indeed, pass his keyboard out to the audience, had it sent back to him, and yet again passed it out to the audience, so I figured that might have been the end. But then when we were at Joe’s solo show at Beerland later that night Rodney said, “I can’t wait to record.” And I was like, “Yeah.” Joe: I thought of Fun Fun Fun as a one-time thing. It was fun getting together to rehearse for it and play the warm-up shows. I’d no idea we’d be getting back together in the New Year until on the trip home from Texas when someone mentioned having a meeting on New Year’s Day to discuss the possibility of playing more shows. Aside from this new record, what else are you and the others working on? Rodney: We’re working on a few things, but they’re secret. Shhhh! Dean: You’ll hear more from us later this year and into the spring... I would also like to mention that I’m also playing drums on an album coming out this fall called Warm Seclusion Structure by a band called I Think Like Midnight. It’s for lovers of the lost art of the rock instrumental. Dandrew: I’ve been working on a collaboration with the amazing MC Breath recently. Working on strange solo stuff. I’ll pretty much play music with anyone that wants to, and is at least relatively passionate about it.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
Derrick Rose
BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
1. CHICAGO
I
T WAS A GREAT SUMMER ON THE court for the Hawks but not without controversy. Though the alarming remarks from team owner Bruce Levenson and GM Danny Ferry certainly came up during their media day, most of the conversations surrounded the team’s plans for becoming a force in the East.
If what we saw over the summer and early fall from the rehabbed Derrick Rose (57 points over the Bulls’ final two preseason games) and rejuvenated Pau Gasol is telling, this winter and spring are going to be fun in the Windy City.
2. CLEVELAND
The Cavaliers’ Big Three (LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love) is younger, quicker and a tad more self-sacrificing than the Miami version ever was, yet we still think this new bunch is at least one year away from granting Northeast Ohio the victory parade it so dearly craves.
3. WASHINGTON
All of the appropriate pieces —great guards (John Wall, Bradley Beal), a gritty vet (Paul Pierce) and interior giants (Nene, Marcin Gortat)— appear to be in place for a nice, long playoff run that could end in the Eastern Conference Finals.
you heard the one that goes, “A legend (Tim Duncan), a perennial all-star (Tony Parker) and a future stud (Kawhi Leonard) walk into a bar...”? Oh well, you’ll hear the winning punchline sometime in the playoffs.
4. MIAMI
3. OKLAHOMA CITY
Chris Bosh could have taken his talents to Houston, but he elected to give it another shot in MIA with Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers and a host of new complementary guys (Luol Deng, Josh McRoberts) by his side.
5. ATLANTA
The biggest offseason move the Hawks made was getting all-everything center Al Horford (18.6 points, 8.4 rebounds per game) off the disabled list. With him back in the mix with Paul Millsap, Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver, you could be looking at the East’s biggest sleeper.
6. CHARLOTTE
Hornets owner Michael Jordan has never been looked at as a brilliant front-office mind, but in convincing the fiery Lance Stephenson (13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds) to leave Indiana and come play with Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson, change could be in the air for Jordan.
7. TORONTO
Because the Raptors play north of the border, most folks still don’t realize how good DeMar DeRozan (22.7 points) and Kyle Lowry (17.9 points) truly are. With a repeat playoff performance, and a breakout year from center Jonas Valanciunas, that should change this season.
8. BROOKLYN
New Nets head coach Lionel Hollins is just the guy to turn a roster full of questions — Are Brook Lopez and Deron Williams finally healthy? Does Kevin Garnett have anything left? Why in heavens is Joe Johnson making $23 million a year?— into a quiet Atlantic Division contender.
Eastern Conference Finals: Chicago over Cleveland, 4-2
WESTERN CONFERENCE
1. L.A. CLIPPERS
Be it on offense (Chris Paul, 19.1 points), defense (DeAndre Jordan, 2.5 blocks), in close (Blake Griffin, 24.1 points) or out deep (J.J. Redick, 39.5% from three), Los Angeles finally has the complete package to dethrone San Antonio.
2. SAN ANTONIO
The Spurs have heard all the AARP jokes, so do yourself a favor and save’em. But have
The Atlanta Hawks Look to Start Anew
No one’s denying that Kevin Durant’s broken foot is a serious blow to the Thunders’ postseason forecast. But because the team is so stacked with talent (Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka), they’ll be able to stay the course until KD returns sometime before Christmas.
4. GOLDEN STATE
While Steph Curry and Klay Thompson figure out a decent nickname for their nightly long-range shooting exhibition (sorry, “Splash Brothers” just ain’t cuttin’ it), first-year head coach Steve Kerr will be over here trying to figure out how to juggle Harrison Barnes and Andre Igoudala at the small forward slot.
5. HOUSTON
The other night we were watching the Rockets in a preseason game and the darnedest thing happened—we literally forgot that Dwight Howard was on the court. The 6-11 center had absolutely no presence. If his team is to do anything in the competitive West, he and Rockets star James Harden must show some spark.
6. DALLAS
While offseason cameras pointed towards Cleveland, Dallas was quietly rebuilding its roster, too. The team grabbed Chandler Parsons (16.6 points) and Jameer Nelson (7 assists), two solid vets who’ll do nothing but help lighten Dirk Nowitzki’s offensive load. The Tyson Chandler homecoming will work wonders on D.
7. PORTLAND
Sadly, one of the most attractive starting fives in the NBA —Trailblazer headliners Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge combined for nearly 45 points a contest last year— is countered by one of the most hideous benches you’ll ever see.
8. DENVER
With a little point guard who has a big heart (Ty Lawson), a big-time power forward who needs little attention (Kenneth Faried) and an 18-point scorer with little hype (Arron Afflalo), these Nuggets have what it takes to be a big problem in the West.

COACH BUDENHOLZER On the scouting report’s aftermath... It’s unfortunate on a lot of levels. I think there are a lot of people that have been hurt in our community and other places. I think those mistakes have been acknowledged. Danny is a friend to me. I appreciate his support and his putting me in this [head coaching] position. He’s acknowledged his mistakes and, I think, what we all hope is that we can learn from this and we can grow and together we can move forward.
and he’s trying to move forward and make it right. I’ve been here the longest out of everybody that’s [on the roster] and I can honestly say that there has been a “before and an “after” Danny Ferry. I’ve seen the difference with all the positive things that he’s brought to the organization, from bringing in the right type of players, coaches and culture here. He made that mistake, but I feel it was acknowledged and now we can move forward and get ready on the season. On being injured and watching the action from the sideline... It was very hard. It was very hard to watch the team all season, especially in the playoffs. It’s one of those things that has driven us this summer. The guys, we’ve been here since June, working and trying to get better. I’m very motivated to get back on the court and show people what we actually can do as a team and build off last year’s playoffs.
On the Hawks’ 2014-15 prospects... I’m excited about our team. We have 12 out of our 15 roster guys [from last season] back. I think that’s very rare in today’s NBA. This group showed to be very competitive and very resilient last year. I think a big part of our program is always going to be daily improvement. We want to get better from the start of the season to the end of the season. We’re constantly looking to grow and improve internally.
On the Hawks’ spot in the new-look Eastern Conference... I’m not sure as far as positioning where we’re going to be, but I can tell you that we’re the type of group that we’re going to work every day and we’re going to get better. I don’t know what the future holds for us as far as positioning, but if we improve as a team and individuals every day I think we’ll be in a good position.
On players’ concern about frontoffice stability.... I will tell you that the group, through the entire [tumultuous] month of September, was incredible with their work in the gym. Paul [Millsap], individually, it’s important that he have a good season. He’s someone that’s really important to us. He fits us really well. I think we’ve communicated that to him on a regular basis.
PAUL MILLSAP On improving his game in the offseason... [It’s] pretty much the same thing with me every year, working on my overall game. Anything dealing with basketball, ball handling, shooting. Pretty much want to improve in all aspects. My main goal is to try and go out and win.
AL HORFORD On the controversy’s effect on him... I was surprised by everything that happened. My biggest thing at first was seeing everything that came out. There’s always two sides to a story. I know as much as everyone else knows. I got a chance to meet with Danny. I don’t condone or agree with that type of language. Whatever decision [the NBA is] going to make as far as punishment, that will have to be taken care of. I do feel, when I met with Danny, that he was very remorseful. He understood what he had done
On Al Horford’s return... Al is a big part of our team. We missed him last year. He’s back but we can’t rely on that as a team. We still gotta get out there and bust our butts everyday and see what comes of that. On Carmelo Anthony saying that free agents won’t want to play in Atlanta with the current ownership... That’s one guy’s opinion. I don’t think it will [affect free agency]. I think the guys we have here, the organization, the coaches, the players, people see who we are. They know who we are, what type of guys we are. On Atlanta fans sticking it out with the team... I think the fans will rally behind us. I think it’s a situation where we had nothing to do with it. I’m sure they won’t take it out on us. So, we hope to see a lot of fans out supporting us. On last year’s tough playoff series with Indiana... Definitely something to build on. We were right there. I hate to continue to look back on it. It was a missed opportunity. A missed opportunity for us. We’re gonna reflect back on that when things get tough. We know that we can compete with anybody in this league. insiteatlanta.com • November 2014 • PG 25

1. KENTUCKY
MICHIGAN STATE
FAB FOUR
“Veterans” Willie Cauley-Stein and twin terrors Aaron and Andrew Harrison will be called on to show fab freshmen Karl-Anthony Towns and Tyler Ulis the ropes—and by “ropes’ we mean the nets they’ll be trimming in April.
2. KANSAS
Though strapping freshman Cliff Alexander is worth all the headlines, teammates Perry Ellis and Wayne Selden Jr. will make the front page of the Lawrence JournalWorld a few times with their own play.
In Branden Dawson and Lourawls Nairn, you’ll never find two guys with more desire. Unfortunately for the Spartans, finding other players to help with the offensive load could start sounding like a broken record.
MINNESOTA
Like his legendary father, Rick, Richard Pitino knows how to win in the postseason. But rather than aim for another NIT championship, though, the younger coach and leader Andre Hollins have their sights set on the Big Dance.
3. DUKE
NORTH CAROLINA
With the bitter taste of that opening-round embarrassment to Mercer out of their mouths, the Blue Devils can scream the praises that Rasheed Sulaimon, Quinn Cook and No. 1 recruit Jahlil Okafor are playing in Durham.
The Heels have the lethal players (Marcus Paige, Kennedy Meeks) to make this season a success. We’re just worried they don’t have the legal team to overcome all of the academic fraud allegations stinking up the athletic program.
4. WISCONSIN
For everyone who’s forgotten just how good the Badgers were a year ago, big man Frank Kaminsky (13.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game) will have little problem refreshing their memory.

SAN DIEGO STATE
Willie Cauley-Stein
We’ve liked coach Steve Fisher since his Michigan days. If he can get the most out of his potential-filled crew (we see you, Dwayne Polee II), we like his chances for an Elite Eight run as well.
SMU
The same way Stanley Johnson plowed his way near the top of the 2014 recruiting list is exactly how his defensive-minded Wildcats will power through the Pac-12.
Larry Brown’s Mustangs were probably good enough for a tourney invite last year —SMU was 27-10 and beat the UConn Huskies twice— but junior point guard Nic Moore (13.6 points, nearly 5 assists) will leave no doubt this season.
ARKANSAS
TEXAS
The Razorbacks haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2008, so underestimating Bobby Portis and Rashad Madden right now is expected. Just make sure you’re aboard the bandwagon by the time it leaves the station in March.
CONNECTICUT
The national champs don’t have any serious chances of repeating in 2015, but in versatile Ryan Boatright and NC State transfer Rodney Purvis, the Huskies’ Sweet 16 aspirations are no joke.
FLORIDA
If Chris Walker can keep his head out of trouble —the sensational forward is already suspended the first two games of the season for violating team rules— he’ll be the centerpiece of team good enough for a Final Four return.
GONZAGA
We’re fully prepared to be called “bird brains” should the Kevin Pargos-led Zags stumble against the likes of Georgia or SMU before Thanksgiving. Win or lose, they should feast in the West Coast Conference.
LOUISVILLE
With the Cardinals flying over to the ACC for the first time, it only make sense that they would be led by Montrezl Harrell, a ridiculous PG 26 • November 2014 • insiteatlanta.com
They say everything is bigger in Texas. Well, the 6-9, 285-pound Cameron Ridley and 6-11 freshman Myles Turner certainly prove that adage has some legs—and lots of muscle.
VCU
The Rams’ defense is still aiming to put teams through 40 minutes of hell every game. The Atlantic 10 better pray that leading scorer Treveon Graham doesn’t have too many 20-point outbursts to go along with it.
VILLANOVA
With five of his top six scorers (including Ryan Arcidiacono and JayVaugh Pinkston) back, Wildcats coach Jay Wright isn’t wrong thinking his team should improve on last year’s third-round exit.
VIRGINIA
The defending ACC champs did it with imposing defense, three pointers and lots of Malcolm Brogdon. This year they’ll do their best to repeat by being stingier, shooting lots and unleashing more Brogdon.
WICHITA STATE
If you’ve seen a better backcourt in the country than Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker (combined for 24.7 points, 8.5 assists), it was probably making millions of dollars in the NBA.
BY BRET LOVE
AST MONTH WE GOT SO MUCH amazing stuff for our Autumn Outdoor Recreation feature, we’re calling this month’s column “AOR II: Electric Boogaloo.” Since the leaves are just now KELTY beginning to change, it’s PK 50 the perfect time to enjoy Georgia’s cool temps and even cooler scenic vistas. Here are a few new things that’ll make your outdoor experience more enjoyable… GOODE RIDER
BACKPACKS & SLEEPING BAGS
It’s no secret that we love KELTY (kelty. com), and their PK 50 Backpack– part of their 2014 TraiLogic collection– is another great addition AIR BED FROM to their innovative line. AEROBED This 50-liter pack is completely zipper less and compartmentalized for organizational ease. The flip-open roll-top design includes a stretch mesh pocket for your tent, separate sleeping bag HI-TEC BOOTS stowage, and a detachable clothing compartment that can be removed to make it a 35-liter pack for short trips. SLUMBERJACK (slumberjack.com) is new to OFT, but the roomy OLYMPIA RG850 rectangular design of FLASHLIGHT their Timberjack series of sleeping bags has gotten our attention. At around $70, their 20-degree bag is a steal, with a tearresistant insulated shell, comfortable “Soft-Touch” polyester liner and stowable pillow pocket for those who want a cushy taste of home. With their budget-friendly price and Zip Together feature, you can get two for winter nights of snuggling with your S.O.
CLOTHING
The problem with outdoor recreation clothing is that it’s often designed for function rather than fashion. The folks at GOODE RIDER (shop.gooderider. com) are working to change that, crafting an entire line of equestrian wear that looks just as sexy in the club as it does on there trail. Their sleek spandex Signature Breech, Ideal Show Shirt in Leopard and faux leather Moto Jacket combine to create a funky futuristic style that doesn’t require horsemanship to work. My teenage daughter fell in love with NOBIS (nobis.ca) earlier this year, when we reviewed their ladies’ Justice Trench. Now I’ve become a fan of the line thanks to their Shelby Men’s Extreme Parka, which boasts a breathable windproof and waterproof outer shell with premium duck down for ultimate warmth. Best of all, it looks just as good as it feels. Outdoor sports aficionados will love the DragonEye Gloves from SEALSKINZ (sealskinz.com). With their Aqua Dynamic Design, the breathable waterproof gloves are close-fitting, offering excellent range of motion for outdoor activities. Skiers and snowboarders will dig the low profile gloves, which are designed to avoid
lining slippage and allow easy use of touchscreen devices.
BEDDING
Roughing it ain’t what it used to be. For those who prefer their “Great Outdoors” with a dose of luxury, there’s Glamping (a.k.a. glamorous camping), whose roots go back to the 19th century, when wealthy Europeans went on upscale African safaris. For people who don’t do sleeping bags on gravel beds, there’s the Premier Air Bed from AEROBED (aerobed.com), a queensized air mattress with a built-in headboard for neck support, an adjustment wand to make it as firm or soft as you want, and a builtin pump for easy inflation. Although it lacks the headboard option, the Raised Queen Neverflat Bed from INSTA-BED (instabed.com) is equally comfortable and even more economical. Its key features are a secondary pump that silently maintains firmness throughout the night, and an 18” height that makes it perfect for campers or guest rooms.
HIKING BOOTS
We travel constantly, and tend to be rough on our shoes. The hiking boots from HI-TEC (us.hi-tec.com), 2013’s Outdoor Footwear Brand of the Year, proved to be up to the challenge. My lady loves their Altitude Pro RGS WP for its waterproof construction, abrasionresistant heel and toe, and Vibram rubber outsole for traction. I preferred the Altitude Sport i WP, a light, waterproof hiking boot with a cushioning OrthoLite sock liner and a rugged rubber outsole. The new Maniac Series from the WEINBRENNER SHOE COMPANY (weinbrennerusa.com) is even lighter, weighting in at under two pounds. Part of the company’s outdoorsman-oriented Wood N’ Stream division, these athleticallyinspired boots are among the lightest ever made, with free-floating laces, Thinsulate Ultra insulation, and durable Tuff Skin high abrasion leather exteriors.
MISCELLANEOUS GEAR
Light and power are essential for time in the backcountry. The RG850 High Performance Flashlight from OLYMPIA (www.OlympiaProducts.com) is virtually indestructible– rugged, waterproof and impact resistant– with an intense 850-lumen beam and 5 settings that include strobe and an SOS signal for emergencies. Best of all, its battery is rechargeable via the Micro-USB charging port. It’s perfect paired with the Kodiak Portable Power Bank from OUTDOOR TECH (outdoortech.com), which is as rugged and powerful as the bear for which it’s named. Waterproof and shockproof, this lightweight wonder features an impressive 2.1 Amp output and 6000 milliamps of battery power, charging your tablet, phone, GPS and other devices quickly and easily.

Now that SUPER BOWL XLV is over, football fans can get to the real issue: Will there be a 2011 season? If you let NFL commissioner Roger Goodell tell it, a new collective bargaining agreement is imminent. But listen to others close to the situation and they’ll say it’s not such a sure thing. While officials work out the numbers, Fanatic knows three things that’ll happen, lockout or no lockout: 1) An SEC defender (Auburn’s Nick Fairley or LSU’s Patrick Peterson) will be the No. 1 pick in the Draft; 2) An 18-game season will be approved; 3) Super Bowl XLVI will kick-off as planned on Feb. 5, 2012 in Indianapolis.
