The 43rd Annual Atlanta Pride Festival is currently the largest event in the United States to coincide with National Coming Out Day, which is observed on October 11. The Parade begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday from the Civic Center and enters the Piedmont Park through the Charles Allen entrance. Sean Hayes Saves With Grace

EAN HAYES IS BEST-KNOWN for his role as Jack McFarland in the popular sitcom Will And Grace but the multitalented and gregarious actor is also a busy stage and film personality and television producer. He returns to network TV with NBC’s new comedy Sean Saves the World. Hayes recently spoke with the press about the show, his comedic inspirations and his views on playing a parent. Tell us a bit about your character. We know he’s single from the pilot episode, but is he going to stay single? Or are we going to see him out in the dating world? He’s going to open a concubine and just, you know… No, of course the goal is for him to move forward and evolve as the show goes on and that includes more dating, and hopefully sooner than later, settling down with somebody and including that person into our family and mine and his. What is more exhausting for you? A full week of work on your new show or a week on Broadway? Oh, hands down Broadway. Yes, Broadway is the most difficult thing or it’s one of the most difficult things any actor can do. And if you haven’t tried it - it’s also the most rewarding and most enjoyable at that. But if you haven’t tried it you should if you’re an actor. It’s grueling but it’s

wonderful - it’ like going to the gym and how great you feel after.

Are you planning to try it again? Yes, I’m sure I will. I don’t know about a musical, but if the right one comes along and the timing is right like anything - never say never - but I would really like to do a play and I’m working on something now to possibly do next year. You inspired so many people with your role of Jack in Will and Grace. But who inspires you? Oh, that’s such a great question. Well, my comedy idols growing up were Marty Short and Steve Martin. And my music idols classically were Mozart, for sure. And then in Pop music, Andy Bell which is a blast from the past. I just met him the other day and I was like, “Oh I forgot what an influence you were on me as a singer,” for like Broadway and stuff. But as far as comedy goes, definitely Marty Short, and anybody funny; anybody hilarious. I loved Carol Burnett and Tim Conway, and I was a big fan of sketch comedy so any sketch artist I loved. Eddy Murphy, you know, when he was on S&L and all those guys. And definitely Peter Sellers. With all the shows you’re producing right now, what made this project the right thing to return to television acting with? Well, everything is about timing. And I know a lot of friends and fans had been saying,

IT FEELS GREAT BEING IN MY FIRST LEADING ROLE ON TV. BUT YES, IT FEELS GREAT.

“When are you coming back to TV? When are you coming back to TV?” which is a wonderful thing to hear. And then the network asked, “When are you coming back to TV?” And like everything, it’s about timing, and so all these things just came in line. And when I met with Victor Fresco, the creator of this show, we were tossing around ideas and we landed on this one. And I was like, “Yes, I’ve never seen that character on TV before, a single gay dad raising a family,” or raising his daughter, actually. So to me, television is all about characters you haven’t seen and relationships you haven’t seen. And this one I haven’t seen yet, so I thought that was interesting. Now that you’re a successful producer, when you’re reading stuff as an actor, has it changed your perspective in how you select roles? Oh, sure, sure. Of course, it helps. I think in order to be a better anything, you must be educated. So as an actor, to be a better actor, I think you should just know a little bit about as much as you can. You know, if I knew a little bit about directing and acting and producing and writing and line producing and craft services and all of it, I think it makes you, first of all, appreciate how lucky you are and appreciate, more importantly, the people who work around you. I think a lot of the times when you’re a young actor like I was, I was dumb and a lot of people still believe. And I should say maybe naive in that I was unaware of my surroundings and what made - what went in to making a machine of a show, because I believe every show is a machine that you build by hiring the right people and all the parts have to work together. So I think I’m more self-aware now of what goes into making a good machine. What would you like people to take from this show? Would you want them to take a specific message from it? Absolutely not. If that’s a bi-product of their viewing experience, fantastic. But it’s definitely not in the forefront of our minds when creating this show week-to-week. It’s making people laugh and telling great stories. I think with me playing a gay dad, the gay part should be the fifth most interest thing about the character. It should definitely doesn’t need to be focused on that just like in real life. So if it’s groundbreaking for being extra funny, great. But there is no agenda here other than to be funny. Is there room for improv in this role? It seems like there could definitely be. Yes, definitely, of course. You know, every person says this and in every interview you guys ask, we always say we have the best writing

team. But we really, really do have the cream of the crop writers in town and they are of the highest caliber. So what they write is pretty close to genius and sometimes it is genius and most of the time it is genius. But, with that being said, they are fine with us improvising us and having a good time and playing around on set to come up with fun new stuff just to add to the greatness that they’ve written. So it’s really fun and freeing to do that. And a lot of times it ends up in the show. How does it feel to be back in a leading role on TV? It feels great being in my first leading role on TV. But yes, it feels great. It feels familiar which I love, but yet it feels new and there’s forward movement in me as a person and me as an actor, and hopefully America will see that, you know. It’s definitely a different character than I’ve played before. This is a real leading-man kind of role in that he’s a responsible grounded person with the voice of reason to the rest of the characters. I think when you’re making TV you always look for, as much as you can, you always look for new characters that you haven’t seen before and new relationships that you haven’t seen before. And so to me I’ve never seen a single gay father on TV dealing with these kinds of things that are very relatable to America, but also in a kind of different way. I love a challenge. What do you think that says about modern TV audiences? Well they’ve definitely progressed in a great way. I think, you know, with the success of social media, the world is being moved faster than ever and only to benefit the education of America to everything, and the world, you know. And so I don’t know that this is that shocking of a character anymore as the gay thing goes, but the situations in which a single gay father is in is new. How did you prepare for playing a dad? Well you know, I was somewhat of a surrogate dad to one of my nieces for a year or two and that helped a lot. She is exactly the same age as Samantha Isler who plays my daughter. So I called upon that. But I’ve always, you know, wanted to be a father in some respects, and other respects not. But I like the parenting thing, and everybody thinks they can parent other kids better. “Well you know, if I was that kid’s parent I would do this…” And I kind of get to fulfill that fantasy by being on a television show being a parent. OUT ON FILM FESTIVAL Is ‘So Gay,”...but in a Good Way BY STEVE WARREN

VEN IF YOU TRY TO BE politically correct, it’s okay to describe the films in Atlanta’s 26th annual Out on Film festival as “so gay.” Or “so lesbian,” “so bisexual” or “so transgender.” That’s the point. Like any festival aimed at a niche audience, such as the recent Atlanta Korean Film Festival, Out on Film serves a dual purpose: letting the target audience come together to celebrate work often made by and for their group, and giving outsiders a chance to sample their culture. I remember the “Blaxploitation” era of the 1970s, when the Shafts, SuperFlys and Pam Grier badasses opened in downtown theaters, usually without advance press screenings, and I was sometimes the only Caucasian in the audience. Some of the movies were flat-out entertaining, some were lousy and some were so “inside” that us honkies were unable to relate. But watching them didn’t turn me black, and maybe they helped me relate to my bruthahs and sistahs. So it is with Out on Film, with enlightening documentaries that celebrate individuals or shine a light on minorities within minorities; high school comedies and dramas that make Glee look homophobic by comparison; romances, thrillers, WTFs – the whole nine LGBT yards. Some of the narrative films see the world through a gay filter, while others could substitute an opposite-sex love interest for a same-gender one – as gay writers used to do to reach a wider audience – without affecting the plot at all. There are fewer “issue films” than usual, although issues like marriage equality and bullying figure in many of the plots of narrative films and the narratives of documentaries. The festival begins Oct. 1 with a screening of Valentine Road, a powerful documentary about a California teen who was shot and killed at school for flaunting his difference. That will be at the Rush Center, 1530 DeKalb Ave., at 7 p.m. All other films will be shown at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinemas, Oct. 3-10. Dates and times for some highlights are given below. The festival’s headline-grabber, after a positive reception at the Sundance and Toronto festivals and prior to next month’s U.S. theatrical release (because of which the distributor won’t let us preview it), is Kill Your Darlings (Oct. 8, 9:10 p.m.), with Daniel Radcliffe as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in a truthy tale of murder and gay romance during his Columbia college days. Most of the starpower (Elizabeth Taylor! Barney Frank! Divine!) is found in documentaries, but a few name actors show up in fictional features: Lukas Haas plays the title role in Meth Head (Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m.), a drama about drugs mething up the relationship between Haas and Wilson Cruz. Megan Mullally plays a mother waiting for her son to come out in the high school comedy G.B.F. (Oct. 3, 7 p.m.). The title stands for Gay Best Friend, this year’s must-have fashion accessory for girls in the in crowd. Lee Meriwether and Susan Blakely play lovers, only one of whom is still alive, in Remember to Breathe (in the Women’s Shorts program, Oct. 5, 12:45 p.m.). Meriwether plays a retired nightclub singer coaxed out of reclusion. Leslie Jordan and Dale Dickey provide some of the comic relief in Southern Baptist Sissies (Oct. 9, 9:15 p.m.), a filmed record of Del Shores’ (Sordid Lives) play about growing up gay and Baptist in Texas. T’S TIME FOR A CONFESSION: Up until September 2013, I had never seen an episode of Breaking Bad. I will readily admit that the show’s original premise– a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer turns to cooking crystal meth so he can leave behind some money for his wife and kids– sounded intriguing. However, when the show began in 2008, I was about to start my last week at one job, and my then-six-month-old son was beginning daycare for the first time. I had a lot on my mind, and simply never got around to watching it. By the time the dust settled, I didn’t even think about catching up on the series. Thanks to the glorious beauty of Netflix (combined with AMC’s full episodes of the current season), cannibalizing the entire series “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Dude Looks Like a to catch up takes almost no time at all. reported that AMC nearly lost rights to the spin-off to Netflix in negotiations with Sony Pictures Television. Hopefully, with AMC beating out their competitor, we can expect the same quality of storytelling as the original series. Given the main character we’re talking about, the tone will most likely be considerably different from that of its predecessor. However, the fact that Vince Gilligan is purportedly involved in the Better Call Saul creative process should spell good news for its potential. Here’s hoping it fills some of the giant hole that will be left behind when Breaking Bad ends its influential six-year run on September 29. While many will be sad to see Walter Whitedisappear from the airwaves, the show will end just in time for the return of The Walking Dead and its new season on October 13. A season four trailer premiered at this summer’s Comic-Con teased a few interesting tidbits about how Rick and the rest of the survivors in the prison have been doing business since the end of season three. There are new faces (including Larry Gilliard, Jr. as Bob Stookey, a recurring character in the comic on which the show was based) mixed in with the old ones, new tactics, and zombies invading the prison. The trailer promises quite a few tension-filled moments, and some unsettling revelations. At times it looks like the survivors are reinforcing the prison, but at other moments it appears as if they’re abandoning the building entirely. There are no shots of the eyepatch-wearing sadist known as The Governor just yet, but we have a feeling we’ll see him sooner than later. In other zombie news, AMC has announced (via their blog) a planned companion series to The Walking Dead. AMC President/General Manager Charlie Collier was quoted as saying, “We look forward to working with [executive producers] Robert [Kirkman], Gale [Anne Hurd] and Dave [Alpert] again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world, and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.” Original comic creator Kirkman was enthusiastic in the same announcement: “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.” The companion expansion to The Walking Dead universe is slated to begin airing in 2015.

LONG LIVE HORROR FILMS! Americas Obsession with the Movie Genre BY CHRISTIAN PEREZ

NSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 DOMINATED the box office during its opening weekend, triumphantly taking the top spot with over $40 million. The second place film, The Family, only generated about $14 million by comparison. It’s funny, because the last time I thought to write about the topic of a great horror film success was back in 2011, when the first Insidious was unleashed and became the highest gross-to-budget ratio film of that year. The Conjuring was also a massive success this summer with both audiences and critics alike, and even earned James Wan (the talented man who directed all three of the previously mentioned films) the reins to the seventh installment in the vastly popular Fast and Furious franchise. Many may not be aware, but horror films have always been incredibly successful and immensely popular, despite often being looked down upon as being part of a lesser genre of film reserved for obsessive fanboys and their annual conventions. The significance of films like The Purge, The Conjuring, and both Insidious flicks proving successful is that they show people something that many believed to be dead in the genre. They are showing that originality sells. James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell first generated a stir in the industry back in 2004, with their highly effective and original film Saw. They are often credited with sparking a resurgence in the horror genre that harkened back to the glory days of The Exorcist, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street, when films had compelling stories and characters, yet also quenched the audiences hefty thirst for blood. True horror fans had grown sick of pointless remakes and tame PG-13 stinkers. So, when the likes of Wan, Whannell, Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever), Alexandre Aja (High Tension), and Neil Marshall (The Descent) came on the scene, they were embraced with open arms. But why do horror films do so well? Why do people want to be scared? Why are they willing to pay to be frightened? According to Purdue University PhD and professor Glenn Sparks, quoted in an article written by Margarita Tartakovsky for psychcentral.com, it’s the same reasons why people seek out roller coasters and other thrills: People enjoy the adrenaline rush. After watching a horror film, the psychological stimulation lingers, heightening the pleasures of the participants’ experiences and causing even regular situations to feel more exciting. Of course, some people are naturally more wired to enjoy this sort of arousal, while others shy away from it completely and have the opposite experience while viewing horror films. Sparks also claims that people tend to flock

towards horror films out of novelty, because of a somewhat morbid curiosity for seeing something that they’ve never seen before and likely never will be able to see in their everyday lives. It’s essentially like rubbernecking after a horrible auto accident. You don’t want to see a person broken and bloody, but, for some reason, you just can’t look away. Tartakovsky also cites Joanne Cantor, a PhD and Professor at the University of WisconsinMadison, who claims that gender socialization is a large factor in why audiences crave being frightened. Cantor is quoted as saying, “Men often like [scary films] as date movies because women are more likely to seek physical closeness when they’re scared, and men can show off their strength and bravery.” According to Cantor, men traditionally like being the protector, while women traditionally like being protected and feeling that sensation of safety. Horror allows for both parties to experience these feelings in a completely safe and unthreatening manner. Cantor also briefly mentions that people want to escape their own problems and anxieties. In an essay entitled “Why We Crave Horror Movies” by legendary author Stephen King, this point is expanded upon. King says that everyone has an element of darkness inside of them, referring to “anti-civilization emotions” that need to be recognized and unleashed from time to time. Horror films allow for people to “dare the nightmare” and responsibly work out their issues in a theater, rather than an insane asylum. Long story short, we flock to horror because, in some sick way, we relate to the terror and feel comfortable knowing that the reality of the film is far worse than our own. We’re selfish in that respect. We enjoy seeing these terrible things because we’ve never seen them before, and know that we will (hopefully) never experience them in real life. This is why horror films and television shows like Dexter, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead and, hell, even Breaking Bad are so phenomenally successful. We, as a society, want to be subjected to things that help us mentally escape from our own situations and feel better emotionally about our current predicaments. It just so happens that these things that make us so uncomfortable also appear to be a wonderful remedy for what ails us. So I’ll leave you with this final thought. Stephen King has said that horror films are like “lifting a trap door in the civilized forebrain and throwing a basket of raw meat to the hungry alligators swimming around in that subterranean river beneath… It was Lennon and McCartney who said that all you need is love, and I would agree with that. As long as you keep the gators fed.”

CBGB’S GOES SOUTH

Savannah Stands in for Legendary New York Punk Haven in New Film BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

“C

BGB” TELLS THE STORY OF music promoter Hilly Kristal and the gritty New York club he founded. Originally set as a showcase for Country, Bluegrass and Blues (thus the CBGB moniker), the venue eventually became the undisputed headquarters for underground rock ‘n’ roll and punk in the United States. The film tells the story of the burgeoning music scene in mid-‘70s New York as it focuses on Kristal (played by versatile actor Alan Rickman). Kristal only had one rule for the acts he presented: play only original music. Due to his support of the early Bowery music and art world, he became known as the Godfather of Punk, igniting the careers of a number of still-influential bands. Blondie, Television, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and even The Police cite Krystal’s support as a conduit to their success. The movie, produced by Unclaimed Freight Productions on location in Savanah, is helmed by Director/Writer Randall Miller (currently in pre-production on the Gregg Allman biopic My Cross To Bear) and Producer/Music Supervisor Brad Rosenberger (co-founder of Omnivore Records). INsite recently spoke with Miller and Rosenberger from their offices in Los Angeles. Our readers in Georgia will be excited to know that you are currently prepping the Gregg Allman biography. Miller: We’re really excited about it and we’re gonna do it down in Georgia, either later this year or the very beginning of 2014. T-Bone Burnett is doing the music. It’s just such an amazing story of Duane and Gregg, the way the Allmans started and how Gregg survived through it all. I spoke with him last month and he said he had no idea who should play “Gregg Allman.” Who is schedule to tackle that role? Miller: Well, it’s complicated because there’s two pieces to it. There’s the younger guy, in his early ‘20s, starting out. And then there’s the portion of the story that’s the older Gregg, closer to his age now. So we’ll have two different people playing Gregg. And there’s a number of guys we’re talking to for the older Gregg, because it’s got to be someone who can sing, has the mannerisms and can really do it. Now on to New York and the “CBGB” project. How did the film happen? Rosenberger: I knew what a rich history the CBGB’s scene had, how much of it was documented on record, and I’d found a book about Hilly Krystal. The whole thing took about three years. Miller: Right, we started talking about the different timeframes, and we were thinking about the CBGB’s mark. You know, kids might wear the iconic t-shirt, but they may not know where it really came from. We found that interesting as we started talking about the CBGB story. Then, looking deeper at the heart of it, there’s this character Hilly Krystal, who had had a dream to create a country and blues place in New York in the ‘70s. He wasn’t able to book those bands, and he ended up booking new rock and punk bands instead. Then it was quite a journey to get it all together, and research it. Tell us a bit about the amount of research needed for a project such as this one. PG 14 • October 2013 • insiteatlanta.com

Miller: It’s similar to Gregg’s story, if you have a character at the heart of it that people really love, people want to support and help you. You’re telling a true story, you’re not trying to sensationalize it, just the real thing. If you do that, you’ll get so many people who are excited about helping you tell that story. That’s what happened. Lisa Krystal, one of Hilly’s daughters, introduced us to so many of his friends, people who worked there, even the bouncer, doorman and cook! And the interesting thing about history, people will all tell you a slightly different version of the same story. And that’s interesting because then you try to find the real, true story from all of that history. How did you select Alan Rickman to play Hilly Krystal? Miller: We’d worked with Alan before and we were thinking of him in the beginning, that it would be a great role for him to play. But Alan didn’t know much about the club. He’s friends with Sting of the Police, so he called Sting about it. Sting told him the story of how, when they first came to the US, the first place they played was CBGB, and he always loved the club because they gave him a job. What did you learn about the New York rock scene during the production? Rosenberger: The music led it. The idea of Hilly, set as a modern-day Gertrude Stein, creating an environment for kids to be free, to write and create anything they wanted to, whether it was good or bad. We found that story. And there was plenty of great music from there, kind of a musical revolution. Now, of course, it’s in sneaker commercials or something, but at the time, it was clearly influential. Since it’s not a story of any one band, the soundtrack becomes the greatest hits of that five year period we focus on and it introduces the acts of that time. Why did you choose to film the movie on location in Savannah? We’d done a movie a couple of years ago down in Savannah. And had a number of good relationships down there. And we were thinking, “If we can’t afford to do this in New York, because it’s so expensive there, where’s the next place we could do it?” We wanted to get the feel and the look of the time. CBGB is now playing in theaters.

I’ll say it’s a must-see, but with the disclaimer that, personally, I’ve never watched something so intense. It’s like Gone Baby Gone on loads of steroids. –Jennifer Smith Williams

RIDDICK (R)

 In this third tale of the defiant anti-hero, Vin Diesel is the murderer people cheer for. Riddick was betrayed and left for dead on a planet filled with nasty things. Still stranded and needing a ship, he lures two crews of intergalactic bounty hunters who want the price on his head. They think they’re hunting him, but he needs a ship and is a hunter, too. The movie is a little confused, bringing more monsters and trying to show the “kinder, gentler” side of Riddick. Fortunately, director David Twohy turns it in the right direction, letting the film become Pitch Black (first in the series) again. Two more draws to the film are menacing WWE superstar David Bautista and Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff. Those who saw 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick will find this to be darker, grittier and a better film. The unexpected bursts of bad language and Sackhoff ’s nudity definitely make this appropriate for a different audience. In the end, Riddick has flaws, but is better than expected. –Justin Patterson

This darkly comical Canadian TV series has yet to catch on in the U.S. But, thanks to DVDs, it’s finally managing to carve out a small, but loyal following. The show originally aired on HBO Canada, but can only be seen in the U.S. on Direct TV… not exactly mass exposure. Call Me Fitz stars Jason Priestly as a boorish used car salesman battling with the sudden appearance of his do-gooder inner conscience. Priestly does a great job playing the ass, embracing the role as on fullon Charlie Sheen mode. An original concept? Not exactly, but it’s still a lot of fun.

THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY: ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S EDITION

You can have your Avengers: For my money, there’s never been a better comic-to-film adaptation than Christopher Nolan’s take on Batman. Batman Begins reawakened the franchise in stunning style, but The Dark Knight did it one better, standing tall among the best superhero films ever made. Even if The Dark Knight Rises seemed anti-climactic by comparison, it’s still a hard-to-top trilogy. The UCE also includes some nifty extras, including a 90-minute bonus disc (featuring a documentary and an interview between Nolan and Superman director Richard Donner), 3 Hot Wheels of Batman vehicles, Mondo art cards and a hardcover book.

PARKS & RECREATION: SEASON 5

With The Office and 30 Rock gone the way of the dodo, Parks & Rec stands as the lone heir to

connect with, those who aren’t familiar with or interested in the sport won’t find much here to relate to. Neither of the main characters is particularly likable, so it’s difficult to find a place to stand. James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) is a cocky, hard partying well-liked guy who races because it’s a passion. Nikki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) is a perfectionist with the personality of a wall, but he’s also a genius of his craft. The movie is fine for what it is– a sports film that could’ve easily been family fare if it didn’t have all the f-bombs and seemingly out-of-place sex scenes every now and then. Howard doesn’t let a single moment drag, and the cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle is simply wonderful (though some of the race/crash scenes were hard to follow due to quick movements). But it’s really just a simple story about two guys who race cars and want to be better than each other. At the end of the day, Rush is a well-made, acted, and directed film that simply fails to captivate. –Christian Perez

WE’RE THE MILLERS (R)

 The trailer for We’re the Millers is probably the year’s funniest, and the movie itself isn’t far behind. The previews don’t leave many surprises, but there are a lot of additional laughs as the story goes exactly where you want it to, upholding traditional values within its uber-raunchy context. Jason Sudeikis is a small-time drug dealer who assembles a fake family (stripper Jennifer Aniston, virginal geek Will Poulter and teen runaway Emma Roberts) to help him cross the border from Mexico in an RV full of weed. Only Ed Helms strikes a false note as an absurd American druglord who couldn’t possibly function in this milieu. –Steve Warren NBC’s storied ensemble comedy tradition (see: Cheers, The Cosby Show, Seinfeld). From Amy Poehler and Adam Scott to Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza, the cast’s chemistry only seems to get better with time. Season five found many of the characters making big moves, from Leslie’s new role as City Councilwoman and impending marriage to Ben, to Ron’s new relationship with a single mom, to Ann’s decision to make a baby. It’s the rare workplace comedy that genuinely makes us care about the characters, balancing humor and warmth without resorting to crudeness or caricature.

SONS OF ANARCHY: SEASON 5

No matter how many personal problems you may have in your own life, chances are good you’ve got nothing on Jax Shepard (Charlie Hunnam). He may have taken over as SAMCRO’s new President, but the badass biker still has to deal with the death of good friends, friction with the law, his scheming stepdad (the always great Ron Perlman), uneasy alliances (including Jimmy Smits as Gemma’s new man), pressure from the Irish… and the list of headaches goes on. Creator Kurt Sutter, Katey Segal’s real-life husband, has accurately been described as a mad genius, and this season of Sons of Anarchy is his most intense and incendiary work to date.

STORIES WE TELL

This brilliant documentary unspools more like a fictional family drama. It’s helmed by actress-turned-director Sarah Polley, who shifts the camera onto her own family for this one. Narrated by her actor father, the doc examines whether or not the man who raised her was her biological father. The movie shows the family members, despite having wrestled with secrets that could easily have caused them to drift apart, as people who genuinely love and care about each other. Sweet, brave and surprisingly open, Stories We Tell gives credence to the belief that every family has its secrets.

The Masquerade In a sea of indie bands, how can you pick a standout? The Masquerade Kid Cudi and I have something in common, we both used to make funny faces in the mirror at ourselves…except he would rap at himself while he was doing it. You might think that’s pretty weird, but it turned out to be good practice since it has firmly placed where Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi finds himself now. Gaining the attention and support of Kanye West through his track “Day N Nite”, Cudi contributed four songs to Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreak album. Now he’s truly self- sufficient; writing and producing his latest release. His new album Indicud truly showcases Kid Cudi’s eclectic musical range and sing song rap style. The song Pursuit of Happiness, featuring “Kids” famous MGMT is still my favorite though. Kid Cudi; not the usual, by any means; not to be missed, for any reason.

10/18 - UNKNOWN HINSON

The Masquerade After threatening to quit touring altogether in 2012, break out your bushy side-burns and bring along your plastic vampire fangs because Unknown Hinson is comin’ back to town. The hard drinkin’, hell raisin’ rockabilly vampire is the self-proclaimed “king of country westerntroubadours”. Also known as the voice of Early Cuyler in the Squidbillies (on Adult Swim) he’s a great crooner and a smokin’ guitar player with a preference for “party liquor, sexy womerns, and fine guitars”. His famous fans include Matt Groening and Billy Bob Thornton; heck Hank

Williams III has a tattoo of him on his arm! He’s got lyrics and a style that’s darkly satirical, with his tongue set firmly in his fanged cheek and music that’s country-western, rockabilly, blues, and rock influenced. 10/26 & 10/27 - NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL

The Tabernacle Neutral Milk Hotel are back together playing music, words I know many never thought they would read. The famed creators of shining indie diamond, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Featuring four original core members, the reclusive Jeff Mangum, along with Scott Spillane, Julian Koster and Jeremy Barnes; this is not only a reunion, but also their 15th anniversary tour. Creating an iconic fuzz-folk sound that is loved by many and has gone on to influence many well-loved “indie” bands; this is a unique opportunity to see the resurrection of the incomparable Neutral Milk Hotel.

The Arena at Gwinnett Center The Canadian crooner for our age is coming to the Gwinnett Center Arena. Mainly known for jump starting a new big band and jazz music era, Mr. Bublé always has a top notch backing band with an intense and driving horn section. Though primarily focused in the crooner vein, you can hear pop influences such as Michael Jackson and George Michael; as he’s covered some of their tunes live to massive crowd response. I’m looking forward to hearing his take on “Get Lucky”. To Be Loved is his latest album and features the excellent original tune “It’s a Beautiful Day”. Take a spin back in time and listen to this revitalization of retro yesteryear.

10/31 - REVEREND HORTON HEAT

The Loft With all the glitter and glam from the neon streets of Las Vegas, there’s an Elvis-like swagger to the psychobilly of Texas-native Reverend Horton Heat. Their music is self-described as “country-fed punkabilly”, mixing country, punk, rock-a-billy, big band, metal, and swing with often humorous lyrics. Laughin’ and Cryin’ with Reverend Horton Heat is their most recent offering, which finds them leaning toward a more countrified rock-a-billy sound. Be sure to keep your peepers peeped for new album Rev. in early 2014. The free-wheeling energy of their live shows and their sense of humor truly endears them to their fans and audience. The mighty Reverend has a cult fan following all around the world, bolstered by endless touring. Get on down for a psychobilly tent revival!

AYTON’S RED HOT REBELLION BLENDS THE best of Rancid and Slayer in such a way that their audience looks like a cross section of all the kids who never made the football team, and never wanted to be mathletes. The band plays a stellar mix of “mine goes to 11” rock that can only be found in dark clubs and darker bars. With a full length album and accompanying comic book released just a year ago, the band wasted no time in following up with Melt the Sky, a new 5-song EP (including a brilliant cover of Gang Green’s “Alcohol”). What’s more, plans for another full-length album/comic are already in the works. Bassist Jim Tramontana spoke with us recently about the band’s origins, the Ohio music scene, and finding that perfect mixture of punk rock and metal. Having been to Dayton, Ohio quite a bit, I was surprised to learn how many great musicians came from there. Is there still a solid music scene in Dayton? Dayton has a historically rich music scene and the current

punk rock and heavy metal, Ohio’s Red hot rebellion is like the Justice League of hard rock.

scene is no different. We are all actually transplants to Ohio – well, Doug (Spencer, guitar) grew up on a woodsy farm outside of the Dayton area, but left for several years for Colorado and then returned in the mid-2000s. I am from Florida and Andris (Devine, drums) is from Wisconsin. Andris actually lives in Cincinnati, but we practice in Dayton, so we call ourselves a Dayton band – except when we call ourselves a Cincinnati band. When we play Pittsburgh, we are definitely from Dayton because of the whole sports team rivalries that exist between Pitt and Cincy. Those Steel City mofos take that stuff seriously. Do you think the city shapes the attitude and sound of Red Hot Rebellion, or would you sound the same if you guys grew up in Boston or LA? I think this band would probably sound the way it does no matter where we lived. Since we all came from different places and came together under this common idea of doing a band that is essentially “the soundtrack to a bar fight,” we could be from anywhere. We just wanted to do something simple and rockin’ and fun, and not be slaves to any trends or Hot Topics. You just put out a full-length last year and now a 5-song EP. Are you going through a particularly prolific period right now, or were these songs left over? As soon as we wrapped up the full-length last year, we started writing new music. Since it is hard for us to tour extensively– it’s ridiculously expensive now!– our main outlet, beyond doing regional shows, is writing. The idea behind the new EP is to keep people interested and whet the collective palate for the next album: RED HOT REBELLION II. We have already started writing music for the new full-length and hope to put in out in the first quarter of 2014. There is still tons work to do, but when

we lock into writing mode, we can be quite prolific. We are also working on a new full-length comic book. Whether it comes out as a stand-alone or in concert with the second full-length LP is yet to be determined. We’ve had a good reaction to the comic book from the first album, which is essential has a page for each song on the album. We’ve done a few comic book conventions and people seemed stoked that they are buying a book that comes with an album – the flip side of selling the album at rock show, where people are equally stoked to buy an album that comes with a comic book. With the second comic book, we are doing a full story. In a nutshell, Red Hot Rebellion is a band of intergalactic heroes sent to Earth to set rock ‘n’ roll back on the correct path… because it’s gone horribly wrong. Do you consider yourself more of a punk-rocker who also happens to like metal, or a metalhead at heart that also digs punk bands? Both. We have all played in both punk and metal bands, and those influences show up in everything we do. Red Hot Rebellion can hang with bands from either genre. So in any given night, you’ll see us as the odd ball in a line-up of all punk or metal bands. I mean, they’re both so wide-open stylistically that there is a lot of room for cross over. And since we bring the ruckus, diehard stalwarts from either camp seem to really dig us. The one band that all three of us love a lot– and I mean a LOT– is Rancid. But we also really, really love Slayer and Led Zeppelin. I think we take the intensity and oomph from all these places and funnel it into the sonic maelstrom that is Red Hot Rebellion. You mentioned the comic and full-length album. What’s next for the band? More rock ‘n’ roll shows. More comic book conventions. More writing and recording. More awesomeness.

Each year, costumes adorn Atlanta Symphony Hall as musicians and audience members wear their Halloween best to what has become one of the most popular family concerts of the season. Staff Conductor Jere Flint leads the orchestra with the Magic Circle Mime Company. In “The Phantoms of the Orchestra,” phantoms take over Symphony Hall and Mr. Flint and his terrified assistant must use the power of the conductor’s baton to control the ghoulish orchestra and lead them in concert. The one-hour program will feature popular classical favorites, including Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

The Dean’s List THE BONAVENTURE QUARTET – Lost and Found At The Clermont Lounge (Self-Released) Georgia’s very own Moulin Rouge BL: Co-written by Bonaventure Quartet cof o u n d e r C h a r l e s Williams and his wife, Lynne Dale, Lost and Found At The Clermont Lounge is an ambitious score for a yet-to-bestaged theatrical production. The storyline centers on an ambitious artist from Macon who moves to Atlanta in search of her creative muse. But when she arrives to “the crush of the streets in the late August heat,” she winds up taking a job as a dancer at the Clermont Lounge. Williams paints musical portraits of the place as a seedy, Southern Moulin Rouge, with colorful characters tailor-made for the stage. There’s the cowgirl named Lil, whose “bump and grind blew their minds, and her cow-cow boogie got them hotter still.” There’s a jaded veteran stripper on “Risqué,” who says Congressmen and princes will all “ante up if I’m risqué, because that’s how the game is played.” Then there’s “The Man With the Amazing Hair,” for whom “the girls all turn when he walks into the room. He’s like a garden in the springtime with his pompadour in bloom.” Now swollen to a 10-piece ensemble that includes original bassist Mark Bynum returned to the fold, the Bonaventure Quartet’s brand of continental jazz has never sounded better. Amy Pike’s voice is in fine form, veering from sweet yearning (“City of Lights”), to bawdy lustfulness (“Dear Dominique”), to mournful balladry (“Maybe Tonight”) with emotive aplomb. If there’s any complaint to be made, it’s that some compositions lack the dramatic dynamic build one expects from a stage musical. The melodies (much like the characters themselves) occasionally seem stuck in a loop, as if seeking a satisfactory resolution that simply may not exist. But maybe that’s the point of Lost and Found At The Clermont Lounge: Life isn’t always easy, dreams don’t always come true, and a simple change of location isn’t always the answer to our problems. Still, it should make for a unique stage production that truly captures the melancholic ennui of life in the Big City. MAX GOMEZ – Rule The World (New West) Singer-songwriter besting veterans while still young JM: Max G o m e z certainly isn’t the first musician to bring together country, pop and folk influences, but he’s done a noteworthy job of blending the three disparate genres for his debut. Like John Prine and Townes Van Zandt before him,

Gomez succeeds where many others fail by being able to churn out interesting lyrics. When you’re backed by a sparse lineup of acoustic guitars and mellow drumming, you can’t hide a weak voice and rambling lyrics. The 23-year-old Gomez has a veteran’s vocals– deep, clear and in charge– and sounds exceptionally confident delivering the 10 songs that make up Rule The World. Whether he’s singing songs of regret (“Run from You,” the absurdly catchy “Ball and Chain”) or longing (“True Blue,” “Never Say Never”), you can’t help but think you’re hearing the beginning of a career that’s likely to span at least a few decades. If this first record is any indication, years from now Gomez could be spoken of in the same reverent tones as Prine, Van Zandt and Gram Parsons. HISTORIAN – Shelf Life (Gazelle) A psychedelic soundtrack before you sleep BS: Historian is actually a gentleman from San Francisco named Chris Karman, who comes with a barrelful of ideas, a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of psychedelic rock, and a firm command of how to layer sounds in a way that is somehow both nightmarish and dreamlike at the same time. Shelf Life is his debut album, and it is quite good. In his bio, Karman describes his goals as “to put as much sound onto a track as feasible,” a goal ably met over the course of these twelve dense tracks. Karman additionally describes his desire to provide “experimentation to present any combination imaginable.” And while that’s overstretching it a bit (the whole history of popular music doesn’t even do that), there’s definitely a lot going on here. Within the supple, drifting mass of this album can be heard a bevy of influences that will be familiar and beloved to anyone who appreciates the genre. Spiritualized, Ride, The Verve, Yo La Tengo, Mazzy Star and of course, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd all make an appearance here. In doing so, the album closely resembles The War on Drugs shot full of horse tranquilizers. If this sounds like a reductive dismissal, you’re highly mistaken. While the record lacks any individual tracks worthy of special commendation, it’s clearly by design. This is mood music worth listening to, and perhaps best experienced just on the outer edge of sleep.

Rest of the Class SUSANNA HOFFS & MATTHEW SWEET – Under The Covers Vol. 3 (Shout Factory) Take a journey through some rare classics LVS: On the third collection of covers from the influential duo of The Bangles frontwoman Susannah Hoffs and Matthew

Sweet, the two respected pop musicians have assembled a formidable list of familiar and obscure gems from the ‘80s. Reading like a cool college-rock radio playlist from the pre-“alternative” days, the tracks include winning takes on R.E.M.’s “Sitting Still,” and The GoGos’s “Our Lips Are Sealed,” with respectful nods to Roxy Music, Elvis Costello, and The English Beat along the way. Even mainstream stalwarts like Tom Petty and Lindsey Buckingham are well-represented here. Hardcore music fans, Hoffs and Sweet also include tracks by tragically underappreciated favorites, including The Bongos (“The Bulrushes”) and the dB’s (“Big Brown Eyes”). Their incredible, ‘60s-flavored harmonies really shimmer on Costello’s “Girls Talk,” with the two almost conjuring the boozy camaraderie of Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, served up with a distinctive, fuzzy California pop twist. Similarly, The English Beat’s skanking “Save It For Later” actually benefits from the Hoffs-Sweet melodic chirp, as does a funky, folky version of The Smith’s famously mournful “How Soon Is Now.” Rounding out the set are wonderfully respectful renditions of The Pretenders’ “Kid” and Tracey Ullman’s deliciously retro confection, “They Don’t Know.” (B) WILLIE NELSON – To All the Girls… (Legacy) Country legend duets with a slew of female singers JM: If you’re don’t like the latest Willie Nelson record, just give it a couple of months, as there’s bound to be another one. Willie has already put out 68 studio recordings to date, and that’s not counting the live albums, compilations, and boxed sets. At 80, the living country legend has his own home studio, and records whenever inspiration strikes. Apparently he’s been inspired a lot lately. To All the Girls… comes out just four months after Heroes, and three months after Let’s Face the Music and Dance. His latest set features 18 duets with various female artists, from country crooners like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Miranda Lambert to more mainstream singers like Norah Jones and Alison Krauss. Many of the tracks here are Nelson staples, like “Bloody Mary Morning” and “Always on My Mind.” While some of the tracks are better than others, there are really no bad songs on this collection. It’s a quiet album, to be sure. Despite coming from a broad range of different styles, the duet partners all sound perfectly at home beside Nelson’s trademark behind-thebeat, slightly shaky, but always comforting delivery. Just try and think of another artist that could sound so natural singing alongside Mavis Staples on one song, and Shelby Lynne just a few tracks later. And if you still aren’t sold, just give it a few months: Nelson will likely have another album out by then. (B+)

JON BATISTE – Social Music (Razor And Tie) The next generation of jazz LVS: From the lead track, “Express Yourself (Say Yes),” it’s clear that singer/pianist/ composer Jon Batiste is a new leader in jazz. His debut album opens with the deceptively subdued “D-Flat Movement,” a moody meditation that perfectly leads into the jubilant ode to spiritual and earthly love, “Let God Lead.” Mixing the raucous party atmosphere of a street parade, peppered with a spicy New Orleans flavor, and punctuated by moments of cinematic clarity, the soulful chant leads the way as the “Let God Lead” mantra is subtly repeated with the rhythm. The 26-year-old, New Orleans-born, New York-based musician has an impressive resume of collaborations. But here, left to his own devices with able backing from his band, Stay Human, Batiste lifts up his influences and history and adds his own quirky, soulful strut. “The Jazz Man Speaks” takes the familiar “Maple Leaf Rag” and juxtaposes a real history lesson, adding the voice of Jelly Roll Morton spiraling over the tune. Likewise, his virtual reinvention of the classic “St. James Infirmary” takes the melody, deconstructs it, adds a deliberately plaintive vocal and marks the song as a Batiste original. An engaging and likeable introduction, the collection is a perfect sweep of styles and moods, concluding with a particularly moving instrumental take on the “Star Spangled Banner.” (B+) BOB DYLAN – Another Self Portrait: The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 (1969 – 1971) (Columbia/Legacy) Maligned Dylan album gets a second chance JM: Bob Dylan’s 1970 album S e l f - Po r t r a i t was welcomed by Rolling Stone with the rather succinct review opener, “What is this shit?” Quite a few Dylan diehards had no idea how to take the troubadour’s tenth album, a 2-LP set featuring mainly covers of old pop and folk hits. It was rightly maligned at the time, with its puzzling selection of covers and sappy, cluttered string arrangements. Given the enormous talent he had already proven to possess in creating anthems for a generation, why waste time covering someone else’s hits? Had Dylan released the 35-song Another Self-Portrait instead, perhaps the reviews would’ve been better. This 2-CD set– the tenth in Dylan’s wildly-anticipated Bootleg Series– draws mainly from the 1970 studio session that resulted in Self Portrait and New Morning as well. The songs on this collection are stripped of the unnecessary overdubs, giving the music a much more organic feel. Self Portrait was a follow-up to Nashville Skyline, and Dylan carries over much of that country crooning here. While it may not have been what his fans and critics were expecting at the time, with a little tinkering this music has aged surprisingly well over the decades. This collection also comes in a massive four-CD release, but the trimmed-down 35-song set is bound to satisfy most. (B+) insiteatlanta.com • October 2013 • PG 23

ITH THE NEW FALL SEASON comes a whole new crop of films vying for attention and dollars. This season’s batch offers a slew of big and modest budget films, with literally something for everyone. Superstars Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, and Brad Pitt all have great new movies on the horizon. Comedy fans shouldn’t be disappointed, as the genre is well-represented with past and present cast members of Saturday Night Live in a number of roles, highlighted by the return of Will Farrell as ‘70s icon Ron Burgundy. Even actor Robert De Niro is getting into the wacky hijinks, spoofing his famous wise guy personae in “The Family.” Horror fans shouldn’t be afraid to find a bloody treat or two, either as the anticipated remake of Steven King’s “Carrie” headlines the list of autumnal frights. Sci-fi is well-represented with the thundering presence of Thor: The Dark World and the sequel to the wildly popular Hunger Games, shot here in Georgia should, as the title promises, catch fire at the ticket booth. Inbetween is a number of promising films, including “About Time,” “Captain Phillips,” “The Fifth Estate,” “All Is Lost,” and even a new take on Shakespeare’s “Romeo And Juliet.” Insite takes a look at a number of the best new offerings, so sit back, enjoy and pick your own favorites.

Robert DeNiro is on hand as a former mob boss. Tommy Lee Jones has fun spoofing his familiar FBI Agent role. The Skinny: The fish out of water concept has been done to death, but in the hands of De Niro and the decidedly game cast, the laughs don’t seem forced at all. Now playing in select markets.

The Stars: Josh Holloway, Chris Brown, Josh Peck. The Shill: A 3-D dance movie that goes inside the inner workings of a heated b-boy competition. Along the way, the eye-popping dance numbers keep the sometimes, well ok, often stale script from going flat. The Skinny: Does the world actually need a 3-D dance movie? The Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde, Daniel Bruhl. The Shill: Ron Howard directs a biographical action film about the 1976 Formula One season. The film focuses on the rivalry between two drivers and the tensions that often follow the competition. The Skinny: With Howard at the helm, the film is a quality vehicle and the fine performances from Hemsworth and Bruhl mark the tale as much more than just a victory lap. BAGGAGE CLAIM

The Stars: Paula Patton, Adam Brody, Taye Diggs. The Shill: Faced with the deadline of her sister’s wedding, a flight attendant (Paula Patton) searches for her own Mr. Right in a frantic, comic 30-day span. Who says old-fashioned romance is dead? The Skinny: Attractive and likeable Patton is the real winner here, overcoming a thin, overused romantic comedy premise and the usual tried and tired results. Now playing in select markets.

DON JON

The Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza. The Shill: Notorious womanizer Jon (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), has no shortage of available conquests, but he’s also addicted to porn. The story follows his adventure to find a more meaningful sex life and he learns a few life-lessons along the way from his friends Barbra (Scarlett Johansson) and Esther (Julianne Moore). The Skinny: Opening to mostly positive reviews, the comedy-drama could establish star-director Gordon-Levitt, formerly known for sit-coms and co-starring film roles, as one of the hot new guard of Hollywood A-listers. OCTOBER GRAVITY

The Stars: George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Ed Harris. The Shill: Medical engineer Dr. Ryan

Stone (Sandra Bullock), on her inaugural Space Shuttle mission, is accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), on his final expedition. The plot thickens when the two leads are stranded in space, with the prerequisite limited air. Will they survive? The Skinny: Credible stars (Bullock, Clooney, Harris) and incredible 3-D technology should make this one of the big movies of the season. Alfonso Cuaron’s screenplay and direction seal the deal. Opens October 4.

RUNNER, RUNNER

The Stars: Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton, Ben Affleck. The Shill: Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake), is a student who is cheated out of his savings by an addiction to online poker. He seeks out the site’s owners, and is lured into becoming part of the “family.” He’s torn when the FBI try to recruit him to help crack the crooks. The Skinny: Timberlake is a better actor than you might expect and his character is a likable everyman, thrust into a delicious dilemma. Opens October 4.

ROMEO AND JULIET

The Stars: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Paul Giamatti. The Shill: The oft-told tale of star-crossed lovers, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy is given a modern twist here, retaining the plot, but eschewing the traditional dialog. Still set in Verona, the two principles (Steinfeld and Booth) still give a valiant try with the confounding concept. The Skinny: Does the world need yet another version of this old favorite? The evergreen story could help sell it to a new generation. Opens October 11.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

The Stars: Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener. The Shill: Another survival story for the fall season, the film is an entertaining and true tale of the kidnapping of the captain of an American cargo ship by Somali pirates. Director Paul Greengrass has cast Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips, and the results should equal pure box office gold. The Skinny: The character study drama is set to be one of the biggest hits of the season, due mostly to Hanks usual humanistic portrayal of the intriguing title character. Opens October 11.

MACHETE KILLS

The Stars: Danny Trejo, Carlos Estevez, Mel Gibson The Shill: The hot and heavy grindhouse exploitation shenanigans continue with Danny Trejo lured back as former Mexican Police detective (turned spy) Machete. He’s been picked by the President of the United States (Carlos Estevez) to prevent revolutionary Mendez (Demián Bichir) from launching a massive missile aimed at Washington, D.C. Terrorist Luther Voz (Mel Gibson), has hatched a plot to start riots across the world. The Skinny: Robert Rodriguez, masterful director of hipster chic and intrigue, has another gory hit on his hands. Opens October 11.

THE FIFTH ESTATE

The Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Anthony Mackie, Laura Linney. The Shill: Timely actionadventure centering around the controversial WikiLeaks website. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as its editor-in-chief / founder Julian Assange, with Daniel Brühl as Daniel Domscheit-Berg. The Skinny: Controversy sells, especially when based on a true, newsworthy story. The film is mostly based on the books Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange and the World’s Most Dangerous Website, and WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy. Opens October 11.

CARRIE

The Stars: Chloe Grace Moretz, Judy Greer, Julianne Moore. The Shill: The third film from Stephen King’s 1974 novel, with Chloë Grace Moretz as Carrie White. Supposedly this adaptation is much more faithful to King’s original storyline and with Julianne Moore along, it’s sure to be worth watching. The Skinny: Director Kimberly Peirce has cornered the market on Halloween this year. Sure to be a popular choice at the multiplex, with the target, date-night crowd. Opens October 18.

ALL IS LOST

The Stars: Robert Redford. The Shill: Redford is the star, the sole performer and there’s almost no dialog, so the pictures will tell the story. Redford is set adrift at sea and he must fight the elements (and himself) to survive the ordeal.

The Skinny: A solitary man? Hardly, with the always-capable Redford as the central focus and J.C. Chandor behind the camera. Opens October 18.

12 YEARS A SLAVE

The Stars: Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti, Alfrie Woodward. The Shill: Based on the 1853 autobiography of Solomon Northup, who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., after being lured from Saratoga Springs in 1841 and sold into slavery. The story details his time spent on plantations in Louisiana and his ultimate release. The Skinny: Steve McQueen (no, not that one) directs a great cast in this big-budget periodpiece drama that is sure to rake in the Oscar nominations next year. Opens October 18.

ESCAPE PLAN

The Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 Cent. The Shill: The story features Stallone’s character Ray Breslin, an experienced and respected engineer, wrongly convicted of a crime, and, in a strange twist, jailed in a prison he designed. Schwarzenegger is along to aid in the escape and grunt and grimace on cue. The Skinny: Sly and Arnold have a builtin audience of mindless action-adventure fans and this Plan, while hardly an Academy Award magnet, will surely find its followers. Escapes into theaters October 18.

THE COUNSELOR

The Stars: Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz. The Shill: A greedy lawyer (ably played by Michael Fassbender) finds himself in hot water when he descends into the seedy world of drug trafficking. Penelope Cruz is his love interest, and Brad Pitt goes all underworldstyle as an unusually seedy villain. The Skinny: Ridley Scott has a huge, as in mega, hit on his hands. The Fassbender-Pitt monolith will be hard to beat this fall. Opens October 25.

NOVEMBER ABOUT TIME

The Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy. The Shill: A likeable British-made romantic comedy science fiction outing that tells the story of a young man, determined to change his past in order to have a better future. Domhnall Gleeson stars as the shy, time-travelling explorer. The always radiant Rachel McAdams co-stars as the boy’s rather reluctant object of desire. The Skinny: A quaint, intelligent, slyly humorous Brit-mance, “About Time” should be the perfect, uplifting film of the moment for young adults and the young at heart. Opens November 1.

LAST VEGAS

The Stars: Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline. The Shill: Four aging best friends – and by aging, we mean they’re all in their late sixties – throw a wild bachelor party in Las Vegas. The story, mostly a buddy-picture vehicle for the four principles, involves the marriage of the last bachelor of the quartet. The Skinny: Jovial spirit of the Rat-Pack lives on in this engaging romp in Sin City. What happens in Las Vegas stays in Last Vegas. Opens November 1.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD

The Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Ray Stevenson, Rene Russo, Anthony Hopkins. The Shill: Superhero blockbuster featuring Marvel Comics’ Thor, conveniently produced by Marvel’s own Studios and distributed by Walt Disney. The story, if you even need to know, is set a year after the events of The Avengers. Here, Thor fights to save the Nine Realms from a mysterious enemy, a force even older than the universe itself. The Skinny: Comic geeks often have plenty of expendable income and people in general need a (super)hero, so look for Thor to soar. Opens November 8.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

The Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey. The Shill: The Wolf in question is a New York stockbroker, capably played by Leonardo DiCaprio. IN the film, he clashes with a bigscale securities fraud case. The plot follows corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world, frosted with the perquisite mob action. The Skinny: Martin Scorsese knows his way around corruption and the mob, so this slick tale should follow in his canon of undeniably watchable adventures. Opens November 15.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE The Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, The Shill: Based on Suzanne Collins’ popular novel, and set as the second installment in the massively popular Hunger Games franchise. As the sequel to original Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence and a number of the familiar cast continue the story the centers on Lawrence’s character. This time, she’s returning home to her beloved District 12 and her ensuing tour adventure is the core of the fantastic saga. The Skinny: Filmed mostly in Georgia last year, the sequel should be a massive hit for the Twilight ‘tweeners (and their parents). Opens November 22.

NEBRASKA

The Stars: Will Forte, Bruce Dern, Stacey Keach. The Shill: A father and son travel from Montana to Nebraska to claim a whopping

windfall of prize money. During the journey, they meet a number of offbeat and interesting folks to whom the dad just happens to owe money. The Skinny: Forte, one of the best recent Saturday Night Live players, handles this role with thankful reserve, making the take all that much more believable and deceptively comedic. Opens November 22.

OLDBOY

The Stars: Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson. The Shill: Spike Lee’s remake of the 2003 South Korean film of the same name, which was based on the Japanese manga of the same name. Whew! No matter the origin, the film Josh Brolin as Joe Doucett, an up and coming ad man, who is kidnapped and held for two decades in solitary confinement. The Skinny: Spike Lee is usually credible in conflict dramas with a knowingly smug touch. This one takes the same route, with a A-game cast bringing realistic results. Probably one to watch for a few Oscar nods. Opens November 29.

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

The Stars: Idris Elba, Naomie Harris. The Shill: A seriousminded biographical film directed by Justin Chadwick and based on Nelson Mandela’s 1994 book Long Walk to Freedom. The film stars the immensely talented Idris Elba in the oft told biography of Mandela. The Skinny: In the new realm of “The Butler” and the brand-new “12 Years A Slave,” this intriguingly presented Mandela biopic should find a good share of the box office as winter arrives. Opens November 29.

GRACE OF MONACO

The Stars: Nicole Kidman, Tim Roth, Frank Langella. The Shill: The former Hollywood star Grace Kelly’s merge of marriage and royalty is outlined in this starry-eyed Nicole Kidman film. Set at a crucial period in history, when her husband Prince Ranier (Tim Roth) heatedly disputes Charles De Gaulle. Lush is the word for the production and solid is the word for the performances. The Skinny: Could “Grace” bring Kidman an Oscar? From the looks of the trailers, the chances are good and the film at least looks great. Opens November 29.

FROZEN

The Stars: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel. The Shill: Disney’s big holiday release in 3D, loosely taken from Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Snow Queen. As part of the Disney Animated Series, the film features the voices of Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa the Snow Queen, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Josh Gad as Olaf the Snowman. The Skinny: Old warhorse Disney never fails to please and previews of the coolly modern and hip “Frozen” promise a well-structured story with the usual quality animation. Opens November 29.

DECEMBER DALLAS BUYERS CLUB

The Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner. The Shill: Matthew McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a raconteur diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and his struggles with the diagnosis and finding a cure. Along the way, he meets a cache of characters who become part of the Dallas Buyers Club, an unconventional union who seek alternative treatments for the disease. The Skinny: McConaughey lost weight to fit into the insightful role and he truly becomes the desperate character. Fine performances all around, including Jared Leto as an HIV-positive, transgendered woman and Bradford Cox as her lover. Opens December 6.

INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

The Stars: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Adam Driver. The Shill: The story of a hip singersongwriter in the electric ‘60s New York Folk scene is loosely based on the late folk singer Dave Van Ronk’s book, The Mayor of McDougal Street. The Skinny: The Coen Brothers strike again, this time with another wonderfully accurate music-themed outing. Highly recommended for fans of folk and Americana music. Opens December 6.

AMERICAN HUSTLE

The Stars: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence. The Shill: Loosely based on the FBI’s famous Abscam sting, which netted a number of corrupt officials including a US Senator, members of the House of Representatives and several other government officials. Here the grit is tempered with Hollywood glitz and the welcome presence of in-demand Jennifer Lawrence. The Skinny: It’s been done before, notably in “Moon Over Miami” with Dan Aykroyd, but here Bale and company play it straight as they exploit the corrupt offenders. Opens December 13.

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

The Stars: Will Farrell, Steve Carell, Paul Ruud, Christina Applegate. The Shill: Ron Burgandy is back and just in time for the Christmas holiday season! Will Farrell returns as the bumbling reporter with all the trappings of ‘70s excess: the clothes, the attitude, the moustache! Steve Carell is along to provide additional comedic relief. The Skinny: The sure to be profitable sequel to the wildly popular 2004 comedy “Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgandy,” with Farrell and company going over-thetop in a wacky romp, filmed mostly around the Atlanta metro area late last year. Ryan Seacrest On Million Second Quiz, American Idol &

the Intensity of Live TV

T SEEMS SOMEHOW APPROPRIATE that the late, great Dick Clark chose Ryan Seacrest as his heir apparent. From his 11-year run with American Idol to his recent gig on NBC’s quiz show Million Second Quiz, the 38-year-old Dunwoody native has proved himself the consummate TV host, not to mention the sort of music industry influencer rarely seen since Clark’s American Bandstand heyday. But Seacrest was hardly an overnight sensation. He started out working radio at the tender age of 16, earning an onair slot with STAR 94 when he was still in high school. By the age of 20 he had already hosted two reality TV shows– ESPN’s Radical Outdoor Challenge and an American Gladiators spinoff for kids called Gladiators 2000. Of course, it was Idol that turned the Georgia boy into an international celebrity, and by 2005 he was named executive producer and co-host of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. A few weeks ago, as Million Second Quiz began its splashy late summer run and American Idol geared up for its 13th season, we took part in a telephone press conference with the increasingly in-demand Seacrest. Between America Idol, your radio show, and hosting for E!, you’ve got so many different things on your plate already. What was it about this show that made you want to jump at it? I think it was the ambition of putting a show like this together, the scale of the show, the energy of the show, the fact that it’s a live event… All of those things went through my head when I was trying to figure out if this was something I wanted to do. And frankly, it’s really the first big idea I’ve heard in almost a decade that I really wanted to host in prime time. And so after the producers pitched me the idea, I said, “Let’s go for it.” Now that I’ve gotten here, I’m not quite sure what I’ve gotten myself into. Shows like this and American Idol really seem to thrive on the intensity of the competition. Does that nervous energy transfer to you, or are you able to remain calm under all that pressure? I think the nervous energy is key to being able to broadcast the excitement of the television show, and be in the moment in these live broadcasts. The energy from a contestant, whether on Idol or Million Second Quiz, is really a character on the show. I mean, that drives the story of what we’re trying to portray to the audience. So I do feel that energy, and I try to thrive off of that energy. And I hope to be able to deliver the best storytelling through that energy. You’re based in Los Angeles. Why did you decide to stage the show in Manhattan? The original idea was to have it in Manhattan to capture the energy of the city while we were doing the quiz show. I don’t think that there has been a quiz show done live since the 1960s, and certainly not one done in the middle of a city, where you’ve got the environment of the surroundings as part of the show. So it should seem like

a natural fit when you think of what this show is meant to deliver, in terms of its pace. There’s nowhere other than Manhattan that has quite the intensity that we were looking for. We all know that you work 24/7, and that this show is going for 11 straight days. How much of a time commitment is this for you? For the producers, I think it’s 24/7. But I still have to work the first half of the day at my other commitment. So my day is split, with the radio show in the first portion of the day and the second portion of the day here at the MSQ compound. So that’s how I was able to do this. Being in primetime, live at 8:00 PM, allowed me to have the runway to do it. I’m curious how familiar you are with the contestants, Do you know much about them before you meet them on the stage? You know, I was thinking about that. Obviously, with the American Idol contestants, I meet them in a city and get a chance to say hello to their mom, their dad, their brothers and their sisters. Here, there will be some that I won’t know until they step out on the stage, and there will be others– for example, those who are in the top four in winners row– that I plan to spend some time with early in the day or late at night just to see what they’re up to. We’ve never done anything like this on TV before, so it is a little bit of a social experiment. We think we know some outcomes. But, to be honest, we don’t know a lot of the outcomes. But my intent is to get to know the ones that I can and talk to them about how they’re doing, and how they’re feeling about living in the pods that they’re living in. You should think of this as part game show, part quiz, part sport, and part rock concert. We hope to deliver all those components as you’re watching. Will we get to know some of those contestants’ back-stories, especially for the top four contestants? Absolutely. You have to. I mean, that’s one of the reasons why you want to root for somebody, right? You’ve got to know where

they’ve come from. These contestants that we essentially pull out of their homes on one night and bring them onto the set the next night, you’ll get to see where they’re coming from. And we will be able to tell those stories because I think that’s what people get attached to. I’ve looked at a lot of casting sessions over the years, and I’ve never seen this kind of response, at this scale, that we’ve had for contestants to participate in a game show before. When you look at the sheer number of people who have applied, who have showed up, and who have played the app, it’s astonishing. How do you think you would fare in the game? How long do you think you would be able to stay? Well, unfortunately I didn’t get to practice with the real questions. Those questions will come up at the last minute. But I got to use the fake questions, which won’t be as entertaining. But I played the app. Let’s just say that there are a LOT of people in every state that beat me when I played the app. I usually only last a couple of bouts. I’m really good at the pop culture, but once you get outside of that I started to lose. In what ways do you feel that this show is

set to fill the void of a game show in prime time? Do you hope to get people excited for games shows again? Sure. One of the things that interested me at the beginning, in terms of doing this show, was that we all know that the television market is very crowded and very cluttered. In order to break through, you’ve really got to have an all-hands-on-deck mentality. And I think NBC Universal is uniquely positioned in a way that they are able to bring all of their different assets together to help make some noise and create awareness for a show like this. This obviously sounds like a lot of fun, but what do you find the most challenging about hosting it? It’s brand new. You know, it’s even new to me. I first started by practicing the game play, learning how to play the game, learning what could happen during the game. I started playing in a little conference room right outside of our production office in Los Angeles. We were sitting there with a couple of card tables and light bulbs trying to learn and play the game. But, you know, most of all I love the adrenaline rush that we all get when we’re participating in something live like this.

John Legend Blends Classic & Contemporary to Create R&B for Grown Folks BY ALEX S MORRISON

S A MUSICAL ARTIST, JOHN LEGEND (born John Roger Stephens) is something of an anachronism. Though he’s only 34 years old, hit songs like “Ordinary People” and “Save Room” wouldn’t sound out of place on a classic R&B/soul radio station next to icons like Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. And, while it has only been 10 years since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Get Lifted, his nine Grammy Awards and special Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame suggest Legend is a career artist whose soulful music will be setting the mood for couples for many years to come. The Springfield, Ohio native credits his childhood in the church and his later education (he studied English, with an emphasis on African-American literature, at the University of Pennsylvania) with grounding him. But he also spent years in the background, honing his craft while working with artists such as Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill, before making a name for himself as a solo artist. Just before the release of his new Kanye West-produced album, Love In The Future, we were delighted to spend some time with the influential singer/songwriter, touching on topics ranging from his time in the Cayman Islands to what he’s learned from his longtime collaboration with West.

Your music is performed frequently, alongside that of classic soul artists, on shows like American Idol and The Voice. Have you always felt like you’ve had an old soul when it comes to music? Yeah, I always felt like I had an old soul, even when I was seven. One year for Halloween I dressed as a businessman in a suit. I wanted to be grown-up so badly when I was a kid. I enjoyed hanging out with my grandparents, and felt really connected with older people when I was a kid. It’s interesting right now, being an artist who’s doing a type of music that is very classic. The foundation is Motown, soul and jazz, but trying to make that sound new, fresh and relevant to today. Part of our challenge in making this new album was trying to make a really great modern soul album that knew its heritage, but that wouldn’t overtly pay homage to its heritage.

Let’s talk about Love in the Future. How would you describe the difference between this album and some of your previous records? My favorite album I’ve ever done is Once Again, and I wanted to get some of the flavor from that. What I loved about it was the romantic quality of the songs, with the beauty of the arrangements. Former Darkbuster Frontman Lenny Lashley Goes Solo… Then Joins Street Dogs BY JOHN B. MOORE

ENNY LASHLEY HAS JUST SIGNED on as the newest member of The Street Dogs. But before the former singer/ guitarist for Darkbuster joins the band for their next record and barnstorming the world, Lashley (going with the moniker Gang of One) is finally releasing his first solo fulllength, Illuminator. Though it’s tempting toss off a term like “mature” to describe the new album– and it is much more personal, lyrically, than Darkbuster’s output– that word is usually just polite fill in for “boring.” That’s certainly not the case with Illuminator. The songs have the same infectious, Boston-bred punkrock attitude that surrounds everyone from the Dropkick Murphys to The Bosstones. Lashley spoke with us recently about the new record, getting his buddies to back him up on this record, and his new gig in The Street Dogs. For those who know you best from Darkbuster, can you talk a little bit about what they can expect with this new album? Well, in short, less songs about beer and swollen nuts, and more songs about my own personal struggles over the past few years. Also, I guess as a result of that, the songs tend to be a lot more biopic and certainly more emotional than any of the Darkbuster stuff. So how did Pete Steinkopf (Bouncing Souls) get involved with the project?

As far as Pete getting involved, I’ve got a longtime bud down in Jersey– Joe at Holdfast Records in Asbury Park. I had been down there many times to play at Joe’s behest. He and his wife Meg approached me about releasing a 3-song 7” on a little startup label, with Pete producing. Well, within three minutes of me meeting Pete, I told him that I had enough music for a full-length, and asked would he be interested in recording, engineering, and producing it? We hit it off pretty good, he said yes, and off we went. Pete has had such a belief in me and the project that I’ll never be able to repay him. Who else joined you on this record? Ha, who didn’t? (Laughs) Well, first I asked Joe “The Kid” Sirios if he’d join me again (he’d tracked two songs at home for the aforementioned 7”), and then he and Pete came up to Woolly Mammoth Studios and we tracked drums for six songs and a couple scratch guitar tracks that we wound up keeping, with Dave Minehan engineering. I had some great friends like Ryan Packer (Slapshot/Tenebrea) join to play bass on a bunch of tracks. Jesse Skokos (Gimmie Drugs) did some keys, as did Pat Hanlin. Rick Smith (Void Union) helped out, as did Eddie Mendez (trumpet) and Luke Hanlin (mandolin/ accordion). Mike McDermott (Bouncing Souls) killed drums on “Hooligans” and “Happily”) and, of course, Pete was on every track in one form or another.

Do you feel more pressure knowing that your name is on the record, rather than just being part of a band? Naw, there was no pressure at all. The album took over two years to get out. I’ve long since forgot about any pressure! (Laughs) I’ll say this: I think the songs on this record far exceeded my expectations already, largely due to the belief that my friends had in me and my music. I hope people will give it a chance and listen to it. Any update on Darkbuster? You know, no Darkbuster updates except that I hope they are all doing well. Musically, I’m moving forward not backwards through that door.

We have a mutual respect for each other’s music and character, I’d say, and we share a common regional bond. I’m excited about the future, for sure! How did you connect with the folks at Pirates Press and Panic State? Pirates Press came on board just after Bean from Panic State did. Bean had heard some stuff from Joe at Holdfast and, again, due to all of these people’s belief in the music the record finally found a joint custody home. (Laughs) But the efforts that both labels have

put into making it look so rad and get the word out is just unparalleled. What’s next for you? The same as always– world domination! I just wanna thank you for the interest and opportunity, and also thank all the folks for their help and belief in me.

The Replacements are one of my favorite bands of all time, and one of the first bands I truly fell in love with. But if The Replacements was the only band we got compared to, I would be pretty annoyed. Everyone’s gonna hear what they hear, but this album has a lot more going on than just Replacements worship. I sincerely hope that, at the end of the day, fans of the record are going to be able to say, “Wow, I can hear band A here, and band B here, but on the whole this stands on its own as just good timeless rock ‘n’ roll music.” What’s next for the band? A. I’m sitting on a ton of fully written songs which we haven’t even begun to attack. Hopefully we can craft a good batch this autumn, enough for a worthy follow-up LP. We are playing Gainesville Fest this year, for those of you so inclined. If Promises to Deliver seems like an album people really dig, we’ll tour proportionately between now and whenever the next album comes out.

A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIENDS Maroon 5 Keyboardist PJ Morton Works With Big Names En Route to Solo Stardom BY BRET LOVE

OU MIGHT NOT KNOW RISING R&B star PJ Morton by name just yet. But you will DEFINITELY recognize some of the famous friends he works with. The soulful singer/songwriter (who used to live in Atlanta) first gained fame a few years ago when he was tapped to play keyboards and sing backup for Adam Levine’s Maroon 5. Last year he released his debut solo EP, Following My First Mind, on Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money Records label. And “Only One,” the breakout single from his recently released debut album, New Orleans, features a guest spot by legendary pop icon Stevie Wonder. Never let it said that it doesn’t pay to have friends in high places. The Louisiana-bred vocalist– son of gospel music singer and Baptist Bishop Paul S. Morton– has definitely paid his dues. He’s won Grammy Awards for his songwriting and production for India.Arie, as well as Dove Awards for his work with gospel singer DeWayne Woods. But New Orleans clearly represents a huge step forward in his evolution as a solo artist. We recently spoke with Morton during his tour with/opening for Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson, to discuss everything from being raised in the church to how he connected with his famous friends. Your dad is a well-known gospel singer, so you obviously grew up with the music of the church. How did that influence the music you make now? I think with gospel music it’s all about making

people feel and connecting to people’s hearts. I think that’s what I’ve taken with me still to this day. It’s about trying to make people feel me, regardless of what I’m singing or writing about . Were there any secular musical artists who had a huge influence on you as a kid? Absolutely. My influences were majority secular, such as Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, James Taylor, D’Angelo… A lot of kids rebel against their parents. Was there ever any question that you’d become a musician like your dad? I think most kids rebel when there’s pressure. There was never any pressure in my case. It was just a natural evolution.

You won Dove Awards for your early gospel music work. Did you get any push-back from friends, family or fans when you decided to, as your book title suggests, “Sing About Love?” There was never really a point where I wasn’t “singing about love” as an artist. So while I was writing gospel music for other artists, as an artist myself I was always writing love/life songs. I still continue to write all types of music for artists, but remain who I am as an artist. It’s kind of ironic that you’re signed to Lil Wayne’s label, Young Money, since he’s not exactly what you’d think of as a natural connection for a gospel-influenced soul man. Can you explain why that partnership proved to be a good fit for you?

Well, when they approached me, it was never about changing who I was, musically or otherwise. That was a plus for me. Then they’re one of the most successful labels out there, and I like to partner with the best. I think “gospelinfluenced” is used loosely. If anything, some people were surprised more because I was an R&B/soul singer signing to a predominately hip-hop label. But at the end of the day I’m an artist, and they are a record label. I’m in the business of making albums, and they’re in the business of putting them out. They have been really good to me. As a soul artist, what was it like getting to work with Stevie Wonder on your debut album? How did you connect with him? It was a dream come true. He was, and is one of my biggest influences. As a keyboard player/singer he was my blueprint. I still can’t believe that I was able to work with him. I just reached out to a mutual friend who got the song to him, and he agreed to do it. It was just that simple. I think it has to be that natural and simple for it to actually happen

at this point. I guess it was just meant to be.

Talk to me about landing the gig as Maroon 5’s keyboardist. How did that come about? Well, I had a friend who was working with the band as a music director for an upcoming tour. They were looking for a keyboard player and backup singer to bulk up their sound live. So my friend reached out to me and thought I’d be a great fit. It was something that I definitely wanted to do, so they flew me to Los Angeles and I auditioned. We clicked and vibed really easily, and the rest is history! That was 3 and half years ago now, and I’m still with the band. In addition to performing with Maroon 5, you’re the opening act on this tour. How has the response been from fans of Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson? It’s really been amazing. I think what’s cool about Maroon 5’s fans and Kelly’s fans is that they love all types of music. And I’m a mix of a few things, so it has seemed to translate well. I’m just so honored to have the opportunity to give my solo music to their fans. And to hopefully make some new fans... How would you like to see your career develop from here? Are there any specific artists whose career arcs you’d like to emulate? Well, like I said, I like to be with the best. So I just want to continue to grow and be amongst the greats one day.

Ben Jaffe on the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Katrina & the Rich Culture of New Orleans BY BRET LOVE

HEN MOST PEOPLE THINK OF NEW ORLEANS, the first three things that come to mind are Bourbon Street, booze and Mardi Gras beads. But anyone who scratches beneath the surface of the Crescent City will discover a rich tapestry of cultures, from the French and Spanish influences of Cajun and Creole to the African elements introduced during the Colonial era. Nowhere in New Orleans is this rich mixture more evident than at Preservation Hall, the French Quarter hotspot where legendary jazz musicians of all races have been cutting their teeth since Pennsylvanians Allan and Sandra Jaffe opened the place in 1961. Their son Ben, born 10 years later, is now the Creative Director of the world renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with the release of a new album, That’s It! A longtime jazz fan, I was delighted to get a chance to talk to Ben about Preservation Hall’s mission, the challenge of preserving New Orleans’ cultural identity, and how Hurricane Katrina made him more passionate than ever before about doing so. What was your parents’ mission when they founded Preservation Hall? They didn’t come to New Orleans with an agenda, which I think is the key to Preservation Hall’s success. But when they got to New Orleans in 1961, with everything that was going on politically, socially and culturally, it made perfect sense that they’d end up here. They were fans of the Pete Seeger-led folk movement, and closely tied into the New Orleans revival that was taking place. Once they got here, with a stack of Folkways and Library of Congress recordings, the bands they loved– the Eureka Brass Band, Tuxedo Brass Band, Billy & Dee Pierce, Sweet Emma Barrett– were still playing music. But it wasn’t being celebrated. Due to segregation and the social stigmas surrounding jazz, New Orleans didn’t have jazz clubs then. The purpose of the venues on Bourbon Street was to sell drinks. If you were an AfricanAmerican musician playing on Bourbon Street, you were on the

same level as a street-sweeper. Preservation Hall changed that.

With no drinks and no A/C, Preservation Hall is as strippeddown as it can be. Why is that important? When I travel, I want to go where the real thing is happening, whether it’s food, music, dancing or socializing. I want to go to the places where locals go, and where locals perform. Preservation Hall is a tiny building sandwiched between Bourbon and Royal Street. We’ve protected this tiny space for over five decades now. It’s amazing that anything like Preservation Hall can afford to exist anymore. Talk to me about taking over as Creative Director of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. I can’t emphasis enough how important the years following Katrina were for us in terms of re-defining our identity. After the hurricane, all of these things I had known my entire life were physically gone– buildings, people, neighborhoods, churches, schools, hospitals, restaurants… all gone. It shook our world in a way we couldn’t even articulate. Preservation is not about putting music in a jar and putting it on a shelf for another generation to discover. Preservation means protecting the culture that gave birth to this music. To this day, we have a direct bloodline to the very first jazz musicians in New Orleans. There are families in New Orleans that are 5th, 6th, and 7th generation New Orleans musicians. Was there any hesitation to mess with the formula in writing new songs for your latest album? If the New Orleans musical tradition doesn’t evolve and continue to be relevant to our community, it will die similarly to the way it almost did in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The only way for our music to survive is for it to be relevant to the generation of kids growing up today, who are going to be the next generation of New Orleans musicians. It’s great to celebrate music from a hundred years ago– that’s part of what we do, too. But we also have a responsibility to create new music, in the

same way Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, and Jelly Roll Morton did. These guys were all composers and musicians who broke down social and racial barriers. There are still a lot of racial barriers we’re breaking down. Maybe we need a little bit more Preservation Hall all over the country. Because of Katrina, this incredibly tragic event, we were afforded an opportunity to have a voice. With the hurricane, all of a sudden the world was looking at us in a completely new way. They were sick and tired of the “Bourbon Street, Beer and Boobs” side of the city. You should come to New Orleans for MY Mardi Gras experience– the Zulu Parade at 6 AM, Mardi Gras Indians, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band marching, and finding Pete’s Fountain up on St. Charles Avenue. When you teach kids, what do you tell them about the importance of preserving New Orleans Jazz? It’s about giving them the tools to discover and appreciate music. I went to conservatory to learn classical music, but I was blessed that I grew up around musicians who taught me how to be part of a community through example. Every musician I grew up with felt like family. When it comes to carrying on the tradition we have at Preservation Hall, what we can provide for a young musician is experience, and an opportunity to interact with real musicians. That’s the idea behind our education program: It’s not about teaching them how to play music, but steering them on the right path and allowing them the opportunity to be a part of an incredible community of musicians.

Asante Samuel Insists the Falcons Are Ready To Take Flight

FTER REACHING THE PLAYOFFS nine times out of his 10 seasons in the NFL (including winning two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots), cornerback Asante Samuel knows a thing or two about what it takes to make a winning team. In his first year with the Atlanta Falcons, the 32-year-old veteran helped buffer what had been a tepid defense, making 36 tackles and getting his 50th career interception. Though Atlanta fell just short of beating San Francisco and making it to the Super Bowl last season, Samuel insists his team is just getting started. Though he’s been out with injuries the first few games of this season, Samuel’s veteran swagger is an inarguable asset that he believes can help them make it to the Super Bowl in 2014. When you get so close and then lose to San Francisco last year, how does it impact the team? Does it drive you to want to work harder this year? I think when you get so close and you get that taste in your mouth, you get that hunger and desire and think, “Next year I’m going to come back bigger, faster, stronger than ever and do what it takes to accomplish the ultimate goal to get to the Super Bowl.” I think it leaves a chip on your shoulder and makes you want to overcome that. A lot of people talked about that call that you guys didn’t get in the San Francisco game. Then the 49ers had the same situation in the Super Bowl, where they didn’t get a very similar call. Did you feel that that was karmic justice? On any given Sunday, anything can happen. You can’t really say this one play could have won the game. I don’t look at it like that. Football is football. Referees are the referees. Nobody is perfect. You just have to make the play at the time to win the game and overcome adversity. Sometimes you get it, and sometimes you don’t. How do you think you can make improvements to win it all and make it to the Super Bowl this year? Last year we were putting some things together. It was my first year here. It was [Falcons Defensive Coordinator] Coach Nolan’s first year. I think, as we keep playing together, knowing each other more and working together, things are just going to get better. Look for us to be better this year. What are your favorite things to do off the field? Any hobbies? I own a record company called Deep Side Entertainment. My solo artist is Young AC. We stay busy with that. We’re currently up here touring and promoting. Talk to me about the motivation behind your foundation and what you’re trying to accomplish. Being raised by a single parent– my mom, who recently passed away– she inspired me. Looking back as I became an adult, I reevaluated my life growing up, the way my mom had the drive and mentality to never give up and do whatever it takes to put food PG 30 • October 2013 • insiteatlanta.com

on the table, and to provide me and my sister with whatever we needed. I wanted to show her a lot of appreciation. This foundation was started before she passed, so she got to see it.

What are your goals with your foundation? How do you want to help those single moms? The foundation is called Bring It Home Single Moms. The main objective is empowering single moms. Watching my mom, and then being an adult now and knowing the things I know... in a lot of ways I think she could have been empowered, whether it’s by learning life skills or training. What are some of your favorite places in Atlanta? The Velvet Room and Onyx are both nice spots. We eat at Davio’s to come hang out and party at. The Spring Roll are pretty good and the chicken parmesan is awesome. We hit Ashai around the corner. We like their fried rice. We hit that spot pretty often. I heard that you got a tattoo inspired by Goodie Mob. Yeah, it says “Get Rich To This.” It was one of their songs when I was in college. It was on the CeeLo Green solo album I think. I was definitely into hip-hop growing up. I loved Master P, Mystical, Lil Wayne, Tupac, Biggie… Did you ever think about becoming a recording artist yourself, or was sports always the focus? For a quick a minute, I was attempting to be an artist back in high school– me and my friends. But it was very quick. You’ve reached the postseason 9 times out of the 10 seasons you’ve been in the NFL. Can you talk to me about what makes a good team? You’ve just got to sign Asante Samuel and you’ll have a successful season! (Laughs) But seriously, you’ve got to have a lot of camaraderie and brotherhood, where everybody is willing to listen and be coachable. You’ve got to have good leaders, starting from the head coach on down. He definitely has to be a good leader, the veteran players have to be good leaders, and everyone has to believe in the system. Obviously given your career record, you wouldn’t have signed with Atlanta if you didn’t feel they had the potential to go all the way. Do you think this team can be like the Patriots– a perennial playoff contender? Definitely. There is a lot of promise in this team and this city. We’ve just got to see how it goes. We’re going to continue to work hard, and try to do whatever it takes to make it to the Super Bowl.

Last year we started composting all of our kitchen waste, mixing it with soil and mulch and using it whenever we plant flowers and herbs.
