STATION CONTROL Is TV Dead? BY BENJAMIN CARR
I
T’S FALL AND TELEVISION’S most wonderful time of the year! As the new season begins, a mountain of pilots and returning shows clamor for our attention. While each new show should be met with great anticipation from the TV enamored masses, there seems to be ambivalence to the new season this year. As a television critic I have to agree. I mean I rarely find myself sitting on a love seat, remote control in my hand, promptly awaiting the debut of a show that I’ve been anticipating for weeks at exactly the moment it begins to air, willing to wait through the commercial breaks because I’m just that excited. There’s not really much that strikes me as appointment viewing anymore. (Although I do watch some stuff on demand very soon after it airs on the actual TV. Those final episodes of HBO’s The Leftovers, for instance, were pretty spectacular, deeply intelligent television. And the next season of Showtime’s Episodes or HBO’s The Comeback will likely garner my attention and may even inspire me to sit and watch something on an actual TV and not a computer or tablet or phone.) I don’t think I’m alone in this confession. We’re busy people with handheld technology in a digital age. We watch shows when we want, how we want, catching up on things in marathon, both consumers and networks growing more adept with a changing marketplace. So far this new fall season, I’ve watched the pilots for Fox’s tearjerker sick-kid drama Red Band Society, NBC’s romantic A to Z, ABC’s Selfie and the season premiere of CBS’s The
Good Wife. But only one of those viewings actually involved me sitting in front of a physical TV set. And even that viewing was not live. (And thank God I used DVR because, if I’d tuned in, I would’ve had to cope with football delays. And The Good Wife is way better than football.) Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Yahoo! are already offering original programming or they’re about to start. (I hear Amazon’s Transparent is the best pilot of the fall.) Even the way TV news comes to us is different. The CNN app on my phone tells me when news breaks. TMZ breaks the Ray Rice elevator video before the networks and cable started playing it over and over and over. This sort of thing makes me a little bit wary for the future. Our collective, shared cultural moments are forever changed. Depending on your age, you probably remember landmark moments of history and culture based upon where you were when you saw them on TV, gathered with your family or shocked as you were changing a channel. The moon landing. The Challenger explosion. The Twin Towers. JFK’s assassination. The episode of Mary Tyler Moore when Chuckles the Clown died. The first time Sam and Diane kissed on Cheers. When Laura Palmer was wrapped in plastic on Twin Peaks. The episode of Friends where everybody finds out about Chandler and Monica’s affair. David Caruso’s butt on the first episode of NYPD Blue. That time Mad Men showed us JFK’s assassination and the moon landing. TV as it was is dead, and that’s not news. And TV as it stands and what it now means to us is different, maybe better and more convenient. But there’s something that is lost. There’s little
RED BAND SOCIETY
reason for a fall season anymore, as successful new shows can launch any time of the year on any platform you select to view it on. Netflix shows launch all throughout the year, every episode all at once, and that counts as more of an event than anything in the new fall season. Streaming How to Get Away With Murder is going to feel way different for me than the time I retreated to an upstairs bedroom to watch the first episode of The Golden Girls. Now we’ve got news feeds on our phones pontificating which show is going to be the first one axed. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think we’ve lost something good while reconfiguring TV shows to fit our needs. There’s no real excitement for little, pasty kids flipping through magazines anymore, memorizing plot lines and character names, preferring to basque in the glow of the television set to playing outside in the sun.

The quintessential story of family, friendship, and steely Southern sisterhood, starring Annie Potts.
ON STAGE THIS MONTH PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Oct 22 - Nov 2 The Fox Theatre Tickets (855) 285-8499 FoxTheatre.org/Phantom
Based on the classic novel, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. This new version of Phantom has reinvented staging and stunning scenic design. It will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this one of the largest productions on tour in North America.
NATIVE GUARD
Sept 26 - Oct 19 Hertz Stage Box Office (404) 733-5000 AllianceTheatre.org/nativeguard The Alliance’s Native Guard blends various art forms in this engaging premiere. The story juxtaposes the deeply personal experiences of Trethewey, a child of a thenillegal marriage between her black mother
and white father living in 1960s Mississippi, with the experience of a soldier in the Native Guard, the first AfricanAmerican Union troop in the Civil War, who was charged with guarding white Confederate captives. Years after her mother's tragic death, Trethewey reclaims her memory, just as she reclaims the voices of the black soldiers whose service has been all but forgotten.

OUT ON FILM FESTIVAL Highlights Modern Families BY STEVE WARREN
M
OST OF THIS SUMMER’S movies were doubly disappointing, for audiences and the studios that released them. Things should be better for the rest of the year, as award hopefuls open every week; but you can start the transition to seeing good movies again at the 27th annual Out on Film festival, which runs October 2-9 at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinemas. Having seen well over half of this year’s features, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of these films about, and often made by and/or for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people. Now that it’s common to find LGBT characters in movies and TV shows aimed at general audiences, the formerly underserved community doesn’t have to settle for fluffy romcoms and amateurish dramas made just for them to find characters they can relate to. Out on Film is reaching out this year to other communities that are still underserved – Native Americans in Drunktown’s Finest and Native Hawaiians in Kamu Hina. Though the former is narrative and the latter documentary, both feature transgender women who receive a mixed reception as their formerly accepting cultures are influenced by external homophobia. More locally relevant is the descriptively titled Al Nisa: Black Muslim Women in Atlanta’s Gay Mecca. Although marriage equality is the LGBT issue du jour in the real world, few festival films touch on it; and those that do are documentaries, not fiction. Perhaps that’s because the anticipated Supreme Court decision on the topic is expected to alter the landscape significantly in the next year. Marriage is a factor in the true love stories in The Circle, about Switzerland’s first homophile organization and two men who met there; Limited Partnership, about the first gay couple to challenge America’s immigration laws; and Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, a filmed stand-up routine with a lot of material about the baby the comic and his husband adopted. The face of the “typical family” has changed, and family is a prevailing theme in many of the festival’s better films. There are stories of a mother and her gay son in Lilting, Eat with Me and Rosie; an Iranian-American family with a bisexual daughter in Appropriate Behavior; a son trying not to be gay in a religious, African American, Deep South household in Blackbird; and a straight daughter with a lesbian mother in Tru Love. Then there are two gay brothers in Tiger Orange. No conflict there? You wanna bet? The transgender teen in Boy Meets Girl is just out of high school but the boy in Blackbird is still in, as are the boys in Boys and The Way He Looks, films from the Netherlands and Brazil, respectively. The latter won top prizes at LGBT festivals this summer in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The protagonist in The Way He Appropriate Behavior

Sandra Bernhard Stays True to Her Improvisational Roots BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

Looks, which opens a regular run next month, is blind as well as gay. Also scheduled for theatrical runs, all at the Landmark, are Pride, about LGBT activists helping Welsh coal miners during a 1984 strike, and Lilting. Aging used to be a forbidden topic in LGBT films, where everyone was young and beautiful. While the mothers in Tru Love, Lilting and Rosie are at least upper-middle-aged, the most radical story is Gerontophilia, which has a teenage boy falling in love with a man in his 80s. If you’re old enough to relate to the octogenarian it may remind you of Harold and Maude. Also qualifying as an unusual love story is Eastern Boys, in which a middle-aged Frenchman is drawn to the young immigrant hustler whose gang robs him. As tough as society can be about trying to dictate who can love whom, we’re sometimes tougher on ourselves. The possibility of crossing the line between friendship and love is faced by two women in BFFs and two men in The 10 Year Plan. Most of the people in narrative films, other than Pride, aren’t very political; but the documentaries more than make up for it. Compared to What: The Improbable Journey of Barney Frank covers the life of the first openly gay Congressman and Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine the much shorter life of the Wyoming murder victim. Out in the Night relates how black lesbians known as the NJ4 faced double discrimination from the justice system. The Last One uses the Names Project Quilt, based in Atlanta since 2002, to educate about the ongoing danger of HIV/AIDS. Here, in roughly descending order, are my top ten favorites of the 26 festival films I’ve previewed, along with their scheduled screening times at the Landmark. For tickets, the full schedule and other information, go to outonfilm.org. 1. Appropriate Behavior (Oct. 7, 7:30 p.m.) 2. Lilting (Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m.) 3. Drunktown’s Finest (Oct. 4, 11:05 a.m.) 4. The Way He Looks (Oct. 5, 7:15 p.m.) 5. Tiger Orange (Oct. 4, 9 p.m.) 6. Boy Meets Girl (Oct. 3, 5:20 p.m.) 7. The Circle (Oct. 5, 3 p.m.) 8. Gerontophilia (Oct. 5, 9:10 p.m.) 9. CTRESS-COMIC-SINGER-WRITER Sandra Bernhard has a wild rock and roll attitude with a heart full of classic show tunes. Totally transcending the “diva” label, she’s remained a consummate performer since her debut in the mid-‘70s, playing on nostalgic showbusiness clichés and realities -- infusing her commanding presence with an ironic, informed and very liberated twist. Balancing prepared musical numbers with one-of-a-kind improv segments, Bernhard’s current “Sandyland” show is an ingenious blend of old-time Vaudeville with profane, cutting-edge delivery. Bernhard spoke with INsite about comedy, the entertainment industry and empowerment. Tell us about the show, it’s at an unusual venue. I haven’t been down to Atlanta to do a proper gig in a long time, so I feel this is a sort of a bridge back there, because it’s tied into the AIDS Walk, which is great, and we’ll have a built-in, natural audience. I’m doing two sets that night at the W Hotel and I’ll have my band with me, The Flawless Zircons. It’s a real blend of personal and cultural observations, crazy stories and travelogues, all blended in and out of songs, with some original songs I’ve written. Hopefully, I take people on a journey. Whenever I do my performances, I take you somewhere else, from out of the mundane into the crazy. Are Southern audiences different than a West Coast audience, for example? The south is a kooky place, but I think every part of the country and every part of the world is different. Whether it’s state to state in America or you go up to Canada, everybody has their own, psychological make-up, the history of the place, where it’s at culturally, and in terms of the political atmosphere. I think people are just different wherever you go and yet there’s a continuity, so it’s a funny experience.

it, like, ten times a day. People are just getting crazy with that. I woke up with a revelation this morning, that people you see the most on social media, especially Instagram, are people that really don’t have a life. You’ve gotta be in your life. And all these people on social media especially, taking pictures of themselves… I mean, it’s obvious you don’t have much going on, because that really takes up some time. When you did “King Of Comedy” (1983), did you and Jerry Lewis bond at all? Obviously you are so different in your style and approach to comedy. I don’t think Jerry really bonds with many people, let alone women who’re doing their own thing. I don’t think he really connected to me, but it certainly worked for the film. He’s like my dad’s generation. They’re sexists and they think a “little gal” is “cute.” That’s about it.

Fall Movie Preview October & November offer cinematic treats for every film fan. BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
A
S THE TEMPS COOL OFF AND leaves begin to fall, the nation’s movie theaters are filling up with the more serious side of entertainment offerings. The superheroes, monsters and mindless explosions of summer give way to slightly more thoughtful material as the awards season picks up steam. And that means it’s time to get down to the business of intense, dramatic storytelling, with enough comedy and animations diversions to satisfy most tastes. Fall is when nearly every studio, no matter the size, rolls out their finest work, hoping for solid hits and maybe a few leftfield surprises. Once again, Insite looks at a sampling of the myriad of on-screen emotions, from goofy comedy (“Dumb And Dumber To”) to heart-wrenching drama (“You’re Not You”). As always, we cut to the last reel by offering “the stars,” “the shill” and “the skinny” on each new film.
OCTOBER 1 MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN
The Stars: Adam Sandler, Judy Greer, Ansel Elgort, Kaitlyn Dever. The shill: The pros and cons of the Internet, as seen through the lives of teenagers and their parents. How it affects relationships, communication and self-esteem is examined to dramatic -- and occasionally comic – extremes in this new Jason Reitman film. Ultimately, even in a close-knit family unit, isolation reigns supreme, especially within the confines of the Internet. The skinny: In the hands of “Juno” director Reitman, this cautionary tale should be a decentsized hit as well as a great think-piece for post-screening chat. Well, not chat, actual conversation. And it’s the first worthwhile Adam Sandler movie in, well, ever.
OCTOBER 3
service as a reluctant getaway chauffeur in a high-stakes, 9-million dollar bank heist. Complications arise, naturally. The skinny: Cusack and Jane make a great on-screen team and their fractious interplay features realistic tension interspersed with welcome and surprisingly frequent comic relief, saving the film from being yet another heist flick. Along the way, Ventoura is a great distraction.
GONE GIRL
The stars: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry. The shill: Based on the popular the 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn, the film centers around a man (Affleck), who is the target of a media feeding frenzy after his wife (Pike) mysteriously disappears. The supposition is that he knows more than he’s admitting, thus the expected intrigue and anguish. The skinny: Affleck is surprisingly good, as is Pike in her diminished role, and the revamped story decidedly deviates from the book, but with enough satisfying new twists to eventually justify the courageous casting of Perry in a pivotal role.
THE GOOD LIE
The stars: Reese Witherspoon, Corey Stoll, Sarah Baker. The shill: A no-nonsense American woman (Witherspoon) agrees to aid four Sudanese refugees as they seek to start a new life in the U.S. Directed in Atlanta by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Philippe Falardeau (“Congorama”). The skinny: Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, the masters behind Imagine Entertainment, lead the incredible crew behind the production, shot on location in Georgia a couple of years ago. Witherspoon turns in a wonderfully understated performance and the story radiates with a hard-scrabble, redemptive joy.
A GOOD MARRIAGE
The stars: Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, Alfre Woodard. The shill: An attractive young couple welcome a newborn into their life, and in the process, learn the history of a vintage toy. Hint: it’s demonic. Evil hijinks ensure, with satanic cult members, terroristic threats and general mayhem prominent in the molten mix. All the fuss is centered around a strange and menacing antique doll. The skinny: A spin-off of last year’s successful spook-fest “The Conjuring,” with the always reliable Annabelle Wallis (The Tudors, Pan Am) in an inspired bit of casting.
The stars: Anthony LaPaglia, Joan Allen, Kristen Connoly, Steven Lang. The shill: Yet another movie based on a story by Stephen King, with sinister over and undertones. This time, a seemingly happy, 25-year-long marriage is disrupted by a box found in the garage. What sort of secrets does it hold and should his wife be afraid? Oh yes, indeed. Very. Turns out, hubby was a serial murderer. So now what? The skinny: Perfect for date night (albeit with a trustworthy mate) and upcoming Halloween trickery, this moody film takes King’s short story and expands it into an epic nightmare that examines marriage values and trust issues. Allen is frighteningly good as the brave wife.
DRIVE HARD
THE HERO OF COLOR CITY
ANNABELLE
The stars: John Cusack, Thomas Jane, Zoe Ventoura. The shill: A former race car driver, happily retired to the slow lane of employment as a driving instructor, is quickly shifted into
PG 12 • October 2014 • insiteatlanta.com
The stars: Christina Ricci, Owen Wilson, Craig Ferguson, Rosie Perez. The shill: A young boy’s vibrant imagination dreams up a tale of living crayons in this delightful, animated film.
The story features a diverse band of colorful characters, protecting their homeland and the imaginations of children from an abusive monster. The skinny: Grand adventure, wonderfully assorted and familiar voices and significant life lessons abound in this cartoon tale, sure to please short-attention-span kids and entertain their easily-bored parents.
LEFT BEHIND
Jennifer Garner, Megan Mullally. The shill: 11-year old Alexander has an awful day, but his family doesn’t really emphasize with him, until they have their own bad days, too. Then they get it. A Disney comedy based on the 1972 book by Judith Viorst. The skinny: Perfect autumnal fun from the reliable, if predictable, Disney machine, with a strong and reliable comic ensemble cast, led by Steve Carell.
The stars: Nicolas Cage, Chad Michael Murray, Lea Thompson, Cassi Thomson. The shill: Based on the popular series of novels and the subsequent film chain, this reboot features Nicolas Cage in a tale of the aftermath of The Rapture (check any Bible for more details). The remaining populace is, as the title suggests, left behind. Chaos ensues. Directed by veteran stuntman and raconteur Vic Armstrong. The skinny: A built-in audience of believers in the original Tim LaHaye book series will enjoy this revised look at the story while newcomers may embrace it too, for the sheer adventure and thrilling possibilities of the idea.
The stars: Ryan Phillippe, James Dumont, Joyful Drake. The shill: On the way to a location shoot, a grade-C movie star (Phillippe in appropriate casting) is kidnapped by thugs and held in a swamp hut in the murky depths of scary Shreveport, Louisiana. A grand gesture move for the multi-tasking actor, perhaps best known for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Gosford Park.” The skinny: Phillippe cowrote, directed and stars in the psychological thriller, which should fimly establish him as a triple-threat in the burgeoning genre of claustrophobic horror.
THE LIBERATOR
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY: HIM/HER
The stars: Edgar Ramirez, Maria Valverde, Danny Huston The shill: A biopic illustrating the exciting life and times of South American anticolonialist Simón Bolívar. One of the most influential politicians of his day -- think way pre-Watergate. He led the foundation for democracy in Latin America. In English and Spanish with English subtitles. The skinny: This turgid action drama with incredible historic significance isn’t likely to be a hit at the local megaplex, but it’s a worthwhile and well-crafted document of a momentous and yet, often-overlooked, world leader.
OCTOBER 10 ADDICTED
The stars: Sharon Leal, Kat Graham, Boris Kodjoe, Tasha Smith. The shill: Based on Zane’s popular book of the same name, the film explores the life of a woman (Leal), with a seemingly idyllic life. She risks everything to follow the overheated temptations of the flesh. The skinny: The steamy potboiler was shot in Atlanta, and be sure to look for the High Museum, among other landmarks, but it is so overwrought with foolish temptations among impossibly attractive humans, it’s almost impossible to tolerate -- on so many levels.
ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY The stars: Steve Carell, Ed Oxenbould,
CATCH HELL
The stars: Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Nina Arianda. The shill: Another installment in the trilogy of Ned Benson’s relationship profile of a young couple (Chastain, McAvoy), told from the viewpoints of their differing memory. A classic, classy and intelligent recycle of the creaky “he said/she said” plot device. The skinny: Chastain and McAvoy are equal parts irascible and irresistible and their performances christen the overlong epic as being worth the journey. Perfect for binge-watching on a long, rainy weekend by yourself or with a loved one.
DRACULA UNTOLD
The stars: Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper. The shill: This atmospheric horror story grimly recounts Count Dracula’s origins, based (loosely) on Bram Stoker’s original Dracula tome. The skinny: A dark fantasy retelling of the familiar, gothic tale, infused with new elements of surprise in the backstory narrative. Universal is hoping to resurrect its famous monsters series with this stylish thriller, in Imax.
I AM ALI
The star: Muhammad Ali. The shill: Yet another documentary look at boxer Muhammad Ali. You’ve heard his story before, but in this intuitive essay, recordings of his own voice are craftily used to narrate
the bulk of the film, further padded with loving recollections from family, friends and sparring partners. The skinny: Ali recorded hours of descriptive conversations, solely intended for personal and family use. The filmmakers utilize those tapes and sew together a unique and thoroughly entertaining portrait that’s much more audio-biography than your standard biopic.
THE JUDGE
The stars: Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Billy Bob Thornton, Vera Farmiga. The shill: A successful lawyer (Downey) returns to his childhood home for his mother’s funeral. While there, his estranged father, who also happens to be the town’s judge (Duvall), is suspected of murder. Guess who has to defend his own dad? The skinny: The film is a great personalitydriven relationship study, populated with some of the screen’s finest character actors. It’s fun to see Duvall teamed again with his old friend and fellow character (on and off-screen) Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade,” “Jane Mansfield’s Car”).
YOU’RE NOT YOU
The stars: Hilary Swank, Emmy Rossum, Josh Duhamel, Frances Fisher. The shill: A carefree college student / wannabe rock singer (Rossum) takes a job assisting a successful classical pianist who has just been diagnosed with ALS (Swank). The two form an uneasy but strong bond in this emotive drama. The skinny: In the wake of those ubiquitous ALS ice-bucket challenges, this film sheds new light on the disease with dynamic interplay between Swank and Rossum as the stars. Truly heart-warming, inspirational and, yes, Oscar-worthy.
OCTOBER 17 THE BOOK OF LIFE
The stars: Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Christina Applegate. The shill: In this animated picture, a conflicted hero and dreamer named Manolo (voiced by Luna) embarks on an epic quest through magical worlds, and the usual setbacks, in order to rescue his one true love, Maria (Saldana) and defend his village in the process. The skinny: A thrilling, with often genuinely scary segments, film that shows the lengths one will travel for love. Pretty darn far. A great collection of voices fill out the cast, including Cheech Marin, Ice Cube and Placido Domingo. How’s that for diversity in casting!
FURY
The stars: Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña. The shill: Near the end of World War II, a five-man Allied tank crew, led by Brad Pitt of course, goes on a deadly final mission behind enemy lines to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. Heroic action and claustrophobic enclosures ensue as the tank heads into battle. The skinny: Gritty, and obviously sweltering, men-in-a-can enactment of painfully realistic WWII events, with dynamic tension - amongst the crew and toward the dreaded enemy.
BIRDMAN
The stars: Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Naomi Watts. The shill: A washed-up actor (Keaton) famous for playing an iconic superhero
(sound familiar?) struggles to adapt to the rigors of a new Broadway production. The skinny: Another actor-on-the-skids vehicle for this fall? Yep, and in the hands of comic genius Keaton, who should know since he actually played Batman, the premise works with an indelible resolution.
HOUSEBOUND
The stars: Morgana O’Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Glen-Paul Waru. The shill: Placed on house arrest in a strange manor, a twenty-something criminal (O’Reilly) is concerned when her talky mother seems right about the house being haunted, in this amusing horror film from New Zealand. The skinny: Another good Halloween choice, and definitely off the beaten path of the usual suspects, but the laughs are plenty. The good, mostly unfamiliar, cast goes for a few actual screams in this unhinged, haunted house story.
OCTOBER 24 LAGGIES
The stars: Keira Knightley, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sam Rockwell. The shill: Lynn Shelton’s high-school-reunion comedy-drama is an absorbing look into goals and life, with an aimless adult (Knightley) hanging out with, and learning about life from, a group of teen girls, led by Moretz. With appropriately atmospheric and thoughtful music by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie. The skinny: For those who haven’t, or simply choose not to, grow up, this film is a good, often funny, life-lesson. Strangely reminiscent of ye olde “Reality Bites” and definitely worth seeing, if only for Knightley’s confused adultchild performance.
ST. VINCENT
The stars: Melissa McCarthy, Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, Jaeden Lieberher. The shill: St Vincent (Murray), a scraggly vet, is asked by his new neighbor (McCarthy), to watch her precocious 12-year old (Lieberher). Life lessons abound as he cleans up his act (a bit) in the face of newfound responsibility. The skinny: Loveable slouch Murray ambles through the film with his usual anti-style, and with the help of current megastar McCarthy, this film should endear him to even more dedicated fans – and maybe an Academy Award.
OCTOBER 31 HORNS
The stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Kelli Garner, James Remar. The shill: Another dark fantasy thriller, this one directed by Alexandre Aja, based on Joe Hill’s novel of the same name. It stars Daniel Radcliffe as the enigmatic and devilish Ig Perrish. Accused of the rape and murder of his girlfriend, he uses his newfound paranormal skills to find the evil perp. The skinny: Gory remake king Alexandre Aja offers this convoluted demonic stew that stars Harry Potter’s Radcliffe in a dark change-of-pace role, as a guy with horns instead of horned-rim glasses. The captivating Heather Graham is otherwise
The skinny: Shot primarily in Georgia last spring, Jones (who also co-wrote and directed) is at his grizzled and ornery best in this lavishly shot character study. Swank, in another outstanding role this Fall, is equally Oscar-worthy, in fact. The mental illness issues raised in the story-line make this an extraordinary film on several levels.
wasted as “The Waitress.”
BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP
The stars: Nicole Kidman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Anne-Marie Duff. The shill: Based on the 2011 novel of the same name, Kidman stars as Christine Lucas, an innocent victim of a tragic and physically debilitating car accident. Her memory isn’t clear, but her former life is revealing. She’s on a quest to recapture those moments. The skinny: Kidman is intensely watchable as the heroine, but the story veers around predictability and preposterousness. Still, as a popcorn muncher, viewers could do worse, and the stylish thriller truly delivers moments of jarring horror and peril.
NOVEMBER 7 BIG HERO 6
The stars: Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans, Jr. The shill: The strange Disney and Marvel Comics merger brings their first animated feature. Set in “San Fransokyo,” the story centers around a young robotics prodigy and his robot. They uncover an evil criminal plot and recruit a motley team of inexperienced crime-fighters to help save the day. The skinny: Disney, quickly swallowing up their competition like a big ol’ cinematic WalMart, works its usual magic on the Marvel dynasty and the results are about as streamlined -- and commercial -- as you’d expect.
INTERSTELLAR
The stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine. The shill: A group of explorers, led by McConaughey, discover and journey through a wormhole (a portal that enables transport to different times and locations), thus testing the limits of space travel and human interaction. Humanity is at stake and the allstar cast brings their A-game. The skinny: Spacey concepts about time travel, presented with the help of megaproduction values and an astronomical budget, propel this “Towering Inferno” of sci-fi into orbit, making it a long, strange trip indeed.
THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING
The stars: Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Emily Watson. The shill: The unlikely love story of physicist Stephen Hawking with his shy literature student bride Jane Wilde, at Cambridge in the ‘60s. Redmayne (Les Misérables) is a credible Hawking and as his love interest, Breathe In’s Felicity Jones is captivating. The skinny: On paper, the Hawking love story does sound a bit dull, but on screen, the two stars carry an exceptional weight of dedication and emotional baggage.
THE HOMESMAN
The stars: Tommy Lee Jones, Hilary Swank, Hailee Steinfeld, Meryl Streep. The shill: A grizzled claim-jumper (Jones) is rescued from the hangman’s noose by a fiercely independent woman (Swank). The price? He must help her, as she escorts three mentally ill women from Nebraska to Iowa.
DUMB AND DUMBER TO
The stars: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daneils, Laurie Holden, Kathleeen Turner. The shill: The Farrelly Brothers offer more idiocy with their beloved dim-bulb characters, now rejoined twenty years after their previous adventures. Heavy on the dumb-er and chock full of astoundingly bad jokes. The skinny: Shot in Atlanta last fall, the sequel should appeal to a variety of mindless comedy fans. Perhaps the misspelled “To” in the title (why? because it’s dumb!) will help texters discern the difference between to, too and two. Or not.
NOVEMBER 14 FOXCATCHER
The stars: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave. The shill: The triumphant story of Olympic Wrestling Champion Mark Schultz (Tatum) is interspersed with how John duPont (Carell), a paranoid schizophrenic, killed Schlutz’ brother Dave (Ruffalo). The skinny: An unsettling modern truecrime story, Carell is wonderful and well-cast in an long-overdue non-comedic role. Buff Tatum and Ruffalo both offer a familial, and astringent, bond as the athletes.
NOVEMBER 21 HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 The stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Donald Sutherland. The shill: The final book in the Hunger Games behemoth is given the cinematic treatment and stretched out over two (long) parts. Part one continues to follow Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) as she becomes a hero to the nation of Panem. The skinny: Another big one for the evergreen Hunger Games franchise and their built-in audience. Partially filmed in Atlanta.
NOVEMBER 26 HORRIBLE BOSSES 2
The stars: Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Jamie Fox, Jennifer Anniston. The shill: This weak sequel finds the three enterprising businessmen battling a jealous and savvy investor. Kidnapping, mayhem and general forced chaos ensue as they follow their creaky plan for success. The skinny: Stale, shrill and deliberate, it’s yet another bad Jennifer Anniston movie.
THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR
The stars: Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John DiMaggio, John Malkovich. The shill: Another 3D-computer animated film from the magical Dreamworks castle; this one is a spin-off from the popular and immensely profitable “Madagascar” series. The skinny: With a flock of endearing characters and indelible voice-talents, this delightful tale should be the perfect way to usher in the chilly Thanksgiving weekend. The upcoming Christmas movie season is just around the corner, so be sure to look for our winter wonderland of films, coming soon.

But the cast (including Game of Thrones’ Thomas Brodie-Sangster and We’re the Millers’ Will Poulter) is uniformly solid, the action is intense and unrelenting, and director Wes Ball knows his way around special effects. Former Georgian Sarah Tiana Balances Comedy and Insight BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
F
ROM HER FIRST ATTEMPT AT stand-up comedy at the Twisted Taco in Atlanta, to roles on Reno 911! and entertaining troops in Iraq, to headlining gigs at the finest comedy showcases across the nation, former Georgian Sarah Tiana has really made a name for herself in comedy. Born in Northern California but raised in the Northern Georgia community of Calhoun, she’s currently on a tour that brings her to Atlanta’s Laughing Skull Lounge this month. The busy Tiana owns a sketch comedy troupe in Los Angeles, writes for The Soup Investigates and Jeff Ross’ The Burn. Tiana recently spoke with INsite about her intuitive style of observational comedy. Tell me about your upbringing. I was born in Heyward, which is a town in East Bay. My parents moved to Georgia when I was five. It was quite the transition. We moved there without any family, it was just the four of us. My mom, dad and my sister. My sister had a tougher time adjusting because she was two and hadn’t really developed speaking skills, so she was very confused by the accent differences. How did you fare with the accent? I think realizing languages and voices and stuff helped me and I think that’s where comedy really started for me. I was always a performer in plays and stuff and I would assume all kinds

one defining moment when you decided to seriously pursue acting? I did a monologue on stage and I don’t even remember doing it, I just remember people standing up and applauding. I said, “If I don’t do this for the rest of my life, I’ll be miserable.” So I started really focusing on theater and film, so I could understand the movie business and how all of it worked. Is stand-up your favorite platform? I feel like stand-up is one of the last forms of free speech. You can get in trouble for the things you say, but not really. Do you have any limits in your choice of material? I won’t be edgy just for the same of being edgy. That is a big trend amongst comics, especially among women comics. I feel like I have something to say and as long as I’m getting my point across, I can talk about whatever I want. People laugh when they’re uncomfortable, not just when something’s funny. And I think a lot of comics feel like they’re doing well, just because people are laughing. And obviously Mitch Hedberg is a huge influence. We would interview comics that came to the Punchline on Album 88. We interviewed David Allen Grier, Bobcat Goldthwait, Tom Rhodes, all these cool people that would come to town. But Mitch Hedberg was the first person that ever gave me tickets, so he was the first comedy show that I actually saw. He is the epitome of comedy. A really deep thinker, smart and witty. I want my comedy to be smart; I’m always thinking of a different way to tell the jokes, so it’s interesting and funny as opposed to an easy laugh.

EMILY KINNEY SINGS OUT
Beth on The Walking Dead and Songwriter Talks Both Her Passions BY BRET LOVE
I
F YOU WERE THE GAMBLING type, you’d be forgiven for betting against the long-term survival odds of Beth Greene– younger sister of Maggie, adoring daughter of Herschel– when she made her debut in The Walking Dead’s second season. Quiet, mousy and seemingly emotional fragile, the character seemed like the sort most likely to meet her maker curled up in a corner and crying for her mommy than going out in a blaze of zombie-slaying glory. But, while tough-as-nails types such as Shane, T-Dog and The Governor have all gone the way of the Dodo, sweet, singing Beth remains one of The Walking Dead’s longest-lasting survivors. She’s even emerged as a strong, nurturing maternal figure in the wake of Lori’s death and Carol’s exile, taking care of the kids and even attracting Daryl’s eye near the end of Season 4. As a longtime fan of the show (and the comics on which they’re based), I was delighted to get a chance to talk to Emily Kinney– the Nebraska native who plays Beth. Though she couldn’t reveal any spoilers for Season 5, we did talk about her early career on Broadway, how she landed The Walking Dead role, her singersongwriter aspirations, and what she loves most about filming in Georgia. It’s obvious music and acting are both passions for you. Which came first, and who/what inspired your original interest in performing?

Singing was my first way into performing. I would sing at talent shows. But acting on TV and doing theatre quickly also become a huge part of my life, and a fun thing I liked to do, too. How did you land the role of Anna in Spring Awakening on Broadway? Seems like an auspicious professional debut! I auditioned for a while for Spring Awakening over the course of quite a few months. It was a long process but it was a blast!! Like a lot of people, I discovered you via The Walking Dead. Can you talk about the casting process for that? Casting for Walking Dead was like most auditions for me but the unique thing about it was it was so secretive. I auditioned with different scenes than what we did for the show. In fact I auditioned with Maggie scenes, but always knew I was going in for the part of her sister. The show was obviously a hit by the time you joined the cast in Season 2. Is that more freeing, to know it’s probably not going to get cancelled, or intimidating because the cast is already bonded? I didn’t know how long I would be on the show, and it was a hit especially with comicbook fans. But it definitely didn’t have the fan base it has now. I’m always pleased when I get to work on something that I know will be seen and has an audience. There is a lot of work

singers and actors do that will never be seen! To have an audience, a listening ear, is a huge gift for any kind of artist. What are your favorite things about filming The Walking Dead in Georgia? I love the music scene I’ve found here. I love Decatur and Eddie’s Attic. I love all the trees and the heat really doesn’t bother me. It’s also really beautiful how fall lingers for SO long here. You’ve obviously gotten a chance to showcase your singing several times on the show. Was the part of Beth written with singing involved, or was that something they added because of your talent? It was something they added. But it was because it would add something special to the character and the story, as I understand, and not necessarily just because I could sing! Your latest EP, Expired Love, has a diverse array of sounds. I saw an interview where you compared your style to Tom Waits’. Was he a big influence on you, and if so, how? I just love his songwriting and story-telling. I feel like there are a lot of artists that influence me, but I’m most attracted to those that have their own unique voice and are very honest, and I find Tom Waits to be very honest in his stories and point of view.
Who are some of the other musicians who influenced your work? I listen to a lot of Frightened Rabbit and lately, A Fine Frenzy and Jaymay. Also, I love John Fullbright right now. Planning to go to his next show in Brooklyn. I’m a “#Fanbright” Which gives you bigger butterflies: Filming an intense, zombie-filled action sequence on the show, or performing live in concert? Both, and kind of the same for the same reason. I don’t want to fall on my ass and fuck up the show! I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask you about the new season of The Walking Dead. I know you can’t reveal details, but can you give me a few thoughts on what lies ahead? No Spoilers!!!!! Fair enough, but you can’t blame a guy for trying. Do you think you’ll continue to balance music and acting after The Walking Dead ends, or do you see a future where you pursue one or the other full-time? I see a balance and focusing energy when one project requires more focused energy haha…but theatre, music, making TV shows, writing: I hope these things are all a part of my life forever.

THE STRAIN
Creator Guillermo del Toro & ShowRunner Carlton Cuse on FX’s Horrific Hit BY ALEX S. MORRISON
I
F YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET, THE Strain (based on director Guillermo del Toro’s trilogy of novels) is a gripping horror story that imagines Vampirism as a 21st century viral outbreak in New York. It starts with an airplane, an elaborately carved coffin, and a shadowy monster known as The Master. From there, each episode unfolds with an increasingly ramped-up sense of terror and dread as the virus spreads, producing an army of undead whose corpses are inhabited by insatiably hungry blood-sucking parasites. Our heroes– a trio from the CDC’s rapid-response team and an elderly Holocaust survivor named Sertrakian– ultimately unite in hopes of stopping the vampires before humanity is wiped out. Director del Toro (the mastermind behind cult horror hits like Pan’s Labyrinth) and showrunner Carlton Cuse (best-known for his work on Lost) sat down to discuss the show which was recently renewed for a second season.

GREENVILLE, SC
The Best Kept Secret in the South
BY MARCI MILLER
I
F YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A quick weekend getaway in the city, save the airfare and look no further than Greenville, South Carolina. Located approximately halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte along Interstate 85, Greenville has gained recognition in various national publications like CNN Money, listing Greenville as one of the “Top 10 Fastest Growing Cities in the U.S.” Downtown Liberty Bridge
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville has combined traditional southern charm, natural beauty and an unexpected contemporary cool to create one of America’s hottest emerging destinations. From a revitalized downtown to Greenville’s one-of-akind Liberty Bridge, quaint shops, boutiques, and fabulous restaurants to a world-class collection of museums, galleries, and theaters to some of the most beautiful lakes, rivers and mountains in the world, Greenville, South Carolina is everything they say it is and more. At one time the retail center of the region, Greenville’s downtown district began to languish in the 1960s as shopping centers lured the retailers and customers to the suburbs. In response, the City started a downtown renewal project. They worked with consultants to develop and implement a downtown master plan and laid the foundation which encouraged business relocation back to the area and it worked. Fast forward to present day where downtown Greenville has become a restaurant destination for the region with 99 restaurants in the greater downtown area. There are over 300 event days each year including several weekly music series, a wide variety of parades, concerts, a farmers market and more. The Peace Center for the Performing Arts, located in the heart of downtown, brings Broadway shows and major headliners to the city each year. Fluor Field in the West End is an exact replica of Fenway Park and is home to the Boston Red Sox affiliate, the Greenville Drive. And of course, there is Falls Park on the Reedy, a large regional park in downtown Greenville with gardens and several waterfalls. Dedicated in 2004, the $15 million space is home to the Liberty Bridge, a pedestrian suspension bridge overlooking the Reedy River. The park’s development sparked a $75 million public-private development, Riverplace, directly across Main Street.
The Westin Poinsett
There are several hotels to choose from in the downtown Greenville area, but if you are looking for true luxury, the Westin Poinsett (120 South Main Street, 864-421-9700, westinpoinsettgreenville.com) is the perfect destination. Poinsett Hotel opened to provide rooms for visitors to Greenville’s annual Southern Textile Exposition. In 1997, the hotel went through a major renovation. During the rehabilitation, all public spaces were restored to the 1925 design and a concerted effort was made to retain original finishes and design elements. On the exterior, original windows were retained, and damaged terracotta decorative pieces and ironwork were restored. The hotel reopened its doors in October 2000. The Westin Poinsett has now earned a Four Diamond hotel rating for the last seven consecutive years, it also earns top scores among all Westin hotels in North America. The Poinsett is a welcome retreat after a long day of exploring Greenville. The Piano Bar and Lounge features live entertainment, the Westin Workout Fitness Studio room and 200 smoke-free guest rooms are furnished with complimentary highspeed internet access and the hotel’s signature Heavenly Bed®. There are eight meeting rooms with 12,000+ square feet of functional space including unique ballrooms that feature soaring ceilings, unique lighting and rich décor elements. Greenville has become a major wedding destination in the south and the Westin Poinsett is tops as a wedding venue.
Breakwater Restaurant and Bar
Greenville also offers a variety of restaurants including coffee shops, ice cream parlors, restaurant chains and gourmet dining. For an amazing dining experience that rivals any big city establishment, make sure to visit Breakwater Restaurant and Bar (802 South Main Street, 864-271-0046, breakwatersc.com). The restaurant is the brain child of Chef Gary Lang and Chef Elizabeth Shaw, who believe that seasons should define their menu. They are also fully committed to sourcing ingredients locally whenever possible. They offer an elegant, contemporary approach to a traditional Lowcountry cuisine, and seafood from the Carolina coast is a hallmark. Highlights of the menu include Fried Green Tomatoes, Low Country Red and Rice & Blackened Shrimp, Southern Fried Chicken and much more. In May 2014 Breakwater was awarded the Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor recognizing the restaurant’s consistent top rating. When planning your trip to Greenville, consider several ongoing city events you can take advantage of including Taste of the South Food Tour: Greenville History Tours which takes guests to five local hotspots and gives them the flavor of Southern cuisine. If you are a fan of craft beer, check out Greenville Brew Tours, an experience that will take guests on 4 stops to experience the craft beer scene. Fall for Greenville is taking place on October 10 – 12, 2014. Over 40 of Greenville’s finest restaurants will be showcasing almost 200 menu items. You’re known for your widely-varied roles. How do you choose your projects? I look at the character and if it’s something I haven’t done before, then I’m automatically interested. I like to push and challenge myself. I’d play a man; I can’t wait to do that! I just love what I do. I’m a creative person and I have to stay creative or I’ll wither up like a raisin. “No Good Deed” is unique in that it’s an African-American-centric thriller. We really had to fight to get this made, because it hasn’t been done. People were like, “It’s never been done; it’s uncharted territory,” but somebody had to take a risk. That’s why I took this; I was thinking, “When is the last time I saw a woman stand up for herself and not play the victim in a thriller?” J-Lo in “Enough” and Julia Roberts in “Sleeping With the Enemy,” but those were how many years ago? It’s time! I think women, I don’t care what color you are; mothers everywhere, will identify with Terri. Tell us about working with Idris Elba. There’s a definite chemistry in your interactions in this film. Oh, he’s ugly, he’s fat and has a dumb accent. No, no, no. Really, he’s great! Very charming, very charismatic. And to me, that makes the best bad guys, because secretly, twisted, you kinda want them to get away with it, a little bit. You don’t want to play a bad guy that everyone hates anyway, because then you lose the audience. Was it difficult to star in and produce the film? It was tough. My best performance was talking Idris into doing it! He had already booked “Mandela;” he was on his way to Africa. I was like, “Oh no, not so fast, you said you were gonna do this movie! And my son is about to go to college and I have that movie set aside for his tuition and please, you have to do this, I’m a single mother!” I pulled the single mother card, yes I did!
Now, nearly a decade later, what do you think of your film “Hustle and Flow,” in retrospect? That’s actually one of my favorites and God, I didn’t know it was ten years! I’m excited to be working with Terrance Howard again, on Empire. But wow, it was just a great experience because it was one of those projects that nobody believed in. Everybody that worked on that project was there because they believed in that story and these people and the script was amazing. As a producer now, I want to produce a “Hustle And Flow,” too; that movie that the studio thumbed-down and then at Sundance, they’re in a bidding war! Tell us a bit about Empire [scheduled to air on Fox next spring]? It’s around a record label that my character and Terrance Howard started when we were really young, and we had three sons. It’s very Dynastymeets-The Sopranos, meets an R&B/hip-hop version of Glee! You are considered a role model for many young women. Is there a pressure to live up to your fans’ expectations? I don’t put that kind of pressure on myself. I have respect for myself and I have morals and values so it’s not that I have to prove anything to anybody, this is just who I am. I have a son, so first of all, my child has to respect me. If he’s gonna go out into the world and respect women, it starts with his mother. You love challenges, so what’s next? A super hero role, or an iconic figure. I mean, I believe Terri was a super hero, but she didn’t have the cape. I want the cape - and I want special powers! “No Good Deed” is now playing. Check local listings for theaters and showtimes. An expanded version of this feature can be found on our website www.insiteatlanta.com.
COMEDY
PAST AND PRESENT
Comic Legend Bill Cosby Lives in the Moment BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
C
OSBY: HIS LIFE AND TIMES author Mark Whitaker says in the recently-published biography that Bill Cosby’s first goal is to “put them there,” – to engross his listeners with an engaging story – in the present. His second objective is to make them laugh. The iconic 77-year-old entertainer has been doing just that for over fifty years now, with a career that includes influential comedy albums, groundbreaking television shows and excursions into every aspect of the entertainment business. This writer was excited and prepared to talk with Dr. Cosby, armed with six pages of notes on his comedy, music, television, movies, books, touring, philanthropy (including his incredible 20-milliondollar donation to Spelman College), his mysterious friendships with Bob Dylan and Richard Pryor, his groundbreaking late ‘60s record label Tetragrammaton, which released not only early Deep Purple records but the American version of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s controversial Two Virgins album. But that’s all in the distant past. Cosby lives in the moment and is busier now than ever, with a new NBC sitcom in the works, plans for a new Fat Albert series, a new comedy special (“Bill Cosby 77”) coming in November and a national tour that brings him back to Georgia this month for a show at the Classic Center in Athens. Cosby is the ultimate jazz musician. He is the Miles Davis, Bob Dylan and Beatles of spoken word performance. His long, improvisational monologues riff on a theme, spiral out into space and may or may not return for a traditional punch line. But in his world, the big finish isn’t the payoff, the journey is the thing. He answers his phone with his unmistakable delivery, not with an expected hello, but “I’m ready!” And we’re off. Suddenly those six pages of notes become unnecessary. You’re known for your comedy records, but I must say, “Urselena” [from Cosby’s Hurray For The Salvation Army Band album in 1968] is one of the greatest soul records of all time. You know what, man, there are certain things in my life that will tie that statement you just made, but none will be above it. That, to me, was one of the grooviest things that was ever mis-promoted. I was in a cab in New York, and a cab driver with an accent said to me, “I am from Israel and you are very famous in Israel in the discos because your song Usra-lina is the most popular song.” And as quiet as it’s kept, I love it. [Cosby’s longtime musical collaborator] Stu Gardner and I put that thing together. Your late ‘60s records are extremely funny and enjoyable but there’s a ton of great musicianship going on, too. Some of them out-funk James Brown’s best stuff. On the LP, the one where I’m wearing a tuxedo and sitting at the piano [1976’s Bill Cosby Is Not Himself These Days] it’s got that song “I Love Myself Better Than I Love Myself.” When you listen to that, you’ll hear one of the baddest drummers ever. His name is Nate. I ad-libbed that whole thing, man. And James Brown, when I played the Apollo Theater, a guy came up to me and said, “James Brown wants to come back and
see you.” And I said, “Ok.” And James Brown came back. Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever had the pleasure of talking to James Brown.
WILLIAM HAS A QUIET WAY OF NOT LISTENING.
Twice, yes. Did you understand what he was saying? Not a word! Thank you! Whatever it was he said, he said he appreciated my rendition more than anybody elses, of him. Besides the one hit, [1967’s “Little Ole Man (Uptight, Everything’s Alright)”] how were those records received at the time? Obviously they were appreciated in pockets, but overall, what was the reaction? I think it was a conflict. How could you be a stand-up comedian and do these songs? I think people had to make a choice on what they were gonna play. Some DJs, some programmers, I would imagine, whatever happens, they put money out to have somebody pick a song. But I’ve never really gotten [back] to that “Little Ole Man” point. Of course, if one wanted to reason in the dark, one would say, “Thank God for Motown because we copied, exactly, Motown’s whole [sound].” Except my words on the song, which was a dedication to my grandfather. Who at times -- and he wasn’t senile -- he just had a way of talking about life that was far over my head sometimes. And the chorus represented another little ole man, who was the neighborhood wino. His name was Bus Tibbs. He worked seasonally. He was a caddy, and an alcoholic. Bus worked all during golf season, and I guess he made enough tips. I don’t know what his behavior was on the courts. And off golf season, he was just known all around the neighborhood and he always had that look. One of the things I remember, Bus would ask you for money, but what was unique, was, he would never ask for more than seven cents.
What happened was, I lived like that until I joined the Navy. And that was an epiphany. I came out of the Navy with an earned GED, I entered Temple, just on a track scholarship. Then when I took the SAT, you know they say a dying person sees their whole life pass in front of them? Well, I saw my life pass in front of me as I died in that exam. All those questions, I sat in the classroom and I remembered looking at them and not paying attention. I got a total score of 500 and I’ve heard they give you 200, just for taking the test! I was put in remedial everything! Divine intervention comes in and I write two compositions for the first time since sixth grade, I’m serious. At that time I was
made serious by a teacher who went to high school with my mother. My mother said, “Get him!” And she did! I got straight A’s. She wrote on my report card, “If William is not watched, I’m afraid he will fall back on his old habits.” And I went back to my old habits of “the sun will come and it will go down.” And I’m gonna leave you with that, man. And next time, we’ll have another article. Just say, “Part two, coming!” Bill Cosby plays October 26 at the Classic Center in Athens. For more information and tickets, visit www.classiccenter.com. Was there a reason for that? There was a wine they sold in Pennsylvania stores called Tio. It must have cost around nineteen cents a bottle. And he would walk up to you and you knew he was gonna ask for six cents, three cents, something like that. It never went above seven. He had boundaries. I don’t know what you’d call it. You’re giving him too much. No, let’s just say Bus knew how much you could afford. I played baseball as a kid. And Bus Tibbs would come. And you knew he was there. All you would hear is “HEEEEEEEY!” He was a celebrity, man. And they would pass the hat around and he would always say, “Can I have seven cents?” Were you interested in comedy and jazz by the time you were playing ball on the block? The life I had as a kid was, “as long as I don’t have to study, I’m gonna be fine.” The only problem with all of that was that my mother and father were both very intelligent. My life and divine intervention brought me to the point of what I found myself doing after Temple University, and that was no sham. Temple University, I entered knowing only what I knew from just sitting in class and not bothering to study. The teacher said, when I was in sixth grade, “William has a quiet way of not listening.”

Album Reviews
REVIEWS BY BRET LOVE, JOHN B. MOORE & LEE VALENTINE SMITH
THE DEAN’S LIST
THE TOURÉ-RAICHEL COLLECTIVE The Paris Sessions (Cumbancha)
Killer cross-cultural collaborations. BL – An Israeli Jew and a West African Muslim walk into an airport… It may sound like the opening line to a decidedly un-p.c. joke, but it’s actually the true story behind this decidedly unique musical fusion pairing forward-thinking singer-songwriter Idan Raichel and Mali’s Vieux Touré, the son of legendary singer-guitarist Ali Farka Touré. After a chance encounter at a Berlin airport in 2008, the unlikely duo became friends, eventually performing together in November 2010 at the Tel Aviv Opera House. The next day they entered a recording studio with Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian percussionist Souleymane Kane. The resulting 2012 album, The Tel Aviv Sessions, was a seamless blend of West African rhythms and Israeli melodies, with Touré’s bluesy guitar and voice creating a musical dialogue with Raichel’s improvised piano. Their follow-up album was originally set to be recorded in Mali, but violent conflict in the region sent the group to Paris instead. Two years of touring has tightened up their sound considerably, and The Paris Sessions sounds like a musical ensemble truly finding its groove, recalling Ali Farka Touré’s work with Ry Cooder on the influential Talking Timbuktu. From the opening song, “From End to End,” to the closing “Alla,” Touré’s West African blues riffs drive the album’s his sound, with nimble guitar and soulful vocals echoing a tradition that resonates from Mali to the Mississippi Delta. Raichel wisely focuses on complementary melodies for the most part: Only on the middle section of “Tidhar” does his jazzy improvisational piano playing seem incongruous to the organic musical whole. For the most part, this is a crosscultural collaboration so stellar, you wonder why nobody thought of thought of blending Jewish and Muslim musical traditions before.
REST OF THE CLASS U2
Songs Of Innocence (Island)
LVS – To assume that everyone with an iTunes account might want the new U2 record was both a brilliant marketing plan and a huge mistake. Offered as a gift release in September, the record at least caused a stir; people were either saying it was good, or at least fair, while others were mocking the entire process. Regardless of your particular

stance, the ploy set tongues-a-wagging and fingers flying to discuss the album on every platform of social media. The fact that it was free wasn’t the problem, it was the delivery method that stirred the masses, of course. But the point is, more people have probably deleted it from their units than bought the band’s previous release, 2009’s No Line On The Horizon, so at least market saturation was achieved. But under the upheaval, the new album itself suffers from the same problem the band has endured for the past decade. How to dismantle their past and provide a new, anthemic collection of great songs to hopefully change the world. Sadly, in that regard, they still haven’t found what they’ve been looking for, yet again. It’s just hard to endure billionaires reminiscing about the grit of their good ol’ punk rock past and love of all things low-budget and unpretentious, as is the message on the first single, “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone).” It sets the tone for the album in a bad way, substantially marring the impact of the passion of “Song For Someone” and “Iris (Hold Me Close).” Those two tracks should have kicked off the disc because they contain all the necessary ingredients of the U2 survival kit: soaring vocals and grand gestures. “Volcano” is just plain bad songwriting, with insipid lyrics and heard-itall-before pop-rock showmanship. However, aided by studio-whiz Danger Mouse “This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now” is a definite highlight to an otherwise average collection of U2 songs that will -- in spite of the nowdiminishing hype -- be quickly forgotten. NINA
My Mistake (Aztec Records)
UK-based synthpop diva Nina, currently on tour with the like-minded blokes in Erasure, has dropped a short and sweet ep just in time for the tour. Lauded by press here and abroad, her new icy hot platter should please even the most discerning fan of synthpowered pop. Obviously Erasure is a strong influence but she’s not trying to copy the moody duo. Rather, My Mistake takes the idea of a cooly detached narrative, wraps it around layers of keyboards and effects and… ok, that does sound like Erasure, but Nina takes it to a different floor of the disco hotel. Her voice is captivating and dangerous, and easily cuts through the programmed backing tracks with a devious and thankfully understated glee. It’s definitely chillwave a detached indifference in the delivery that creates an engaging mystery. Comparisons to Chvrches’ shiver is a fair comparison, but the overall theme is one of action and adventure. The b-side of the title track, “Dark Rider” is the perfect bookend to the tight spiral of “My Mistake.” With the inclusion of two remixes, one by “Bright Light” with additional club beats and the other, a galloping take by Big Black Delta, makes the disc a slight but tasty tease for the inevitable full-length release, due after the new year. B
Glenn Tilbrook
Happy Endings (Quixotic)
On this all-acoustic outing, Glenn Tilbrook, of the politely reserved UK pop legends Squeeze, takes the easy road to songwriting nirvana. He never forces his hand or plays down to his audience. Instead the crafty instrumentalist has penned a solid slab of gentle-rocking odes that are so inoffensive, his kids even pop ‘round for some vocals. Without the formidable croak of his main-Squeeze co-hort Chris Difford, the songs have a smooth glaze that never once breaks a sweat or encounters a pop-bump in the road. Instead, Tilbrook glides through the set with his soothing voice right up-front, never overpowering the slight backing of his acoustic guitar and equally restrained percussion. The result is a cache of incredible pop melodies, notably highlighted by the undeniably delicious ease of “Everybody Sometimes.” Lovers of ‘60s power-pop should also delight in the slippery “Hello There,” recalling the best of the early British Invasion at their best, in the most mannered, reserved behavior possible. B+
Midge Ure
Fragile (eOne)
‘80s New Wave legend still relevant on new record It’s been more than a decade since Midge Ure last offered a full album of new songs and the result is sure to please those who’ve been following the musician since the ‘80s. Fragile, coming in at 10 songs, is a delicate collection of synth-heavy songs that have not been swayed by recent fads in contemporary music; there is no forced reinvention, rather Ure sticks to his own brand New Wave synth music, with a dash of prog. The former guitarist for Thin Lizzy and Ultravox co-founder has never been able to eclipse his first two solo albums, released in ’85 and ’88, but that has thankfully not discouraged him for recording and touring. In fact, he is currently crossing the country with fellow ‘80s vets like Howard Jones and The Thompsons Twins’ Tom Bailey, and drawing strong reviews from critics and fans. Much like the just-released Echo & the Bunnymen album and the last OMD record, a number of New Wave survivors are continuing to put out some of their best music in decades. B
A Shoreline Dream
The Silent Sunrise (Late Night Week Night Records) Shoegaze lives in the latest from this Denver band Shoegaze is still alive and well, thanks to bands like Denver-based A Shoreline Dream. Their fourth full-length, The Silent Sunrise, sounds like a band raised on old Lush, Ride and even a couple of Sigur Ros records. The
nine-tracks here divert little from the basic formula of atmospheric guitars and Ryan Policky’s subtle vocals struggling to be heard over the deep lines of synth and guitars. The recording of The Silent Sunrise was done inside a historic 20th Century barn formerly belonging to PT Barnum which adds a bit to the sometimes eerie vibe captured on this record. The band is not exactly treading new ground here, but the result is satisfying nonetheless. And the genre lives on…B-
Tinnarose
self-titled (Nine Mile Records)
Quirky Austin band improves with repeat listens The self-titled debut from the Austin fivepiece Tinnarose is easy to dismiss as simply yet another indie rock band reveling in their quickness with no real contribution to the music world. God knows I did on a quick initial listen. But I couldn’t shake the second track on the record, the mellow “Hard Loving You” with its breezy jazz vibe and wah-wah guitars. I gave it another listen and found a couple of more tracks to like, the charging “Small Talk” and “Emptiness” with its airy, dreamlike vocals. Going back to the record again and again over two weeks, I was slowly but genuinely converted; the shared male/ female vocals, the crisp sound and the liberal use of non-basic indie rock instruments (sax, trombone, trumpet… fuck, is that an autoharp?) and I was won eventually over. This record should come with a warning label, pleading to hold judgment before several listens. B
Shovels & Rope
Swimmin’ Time (Dualtone)
Husbane/Wife duo top their last great Americana album The Charleston, SC duo Shovels & Rope caused quite a frenzy among critics jumping over each other to praise their 2012 debut. I can only imagine the chorus of approval that will meet the even stronger Swimmin’ Time. The husband and wife team of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst deliver one of the best alt country/folk albums of the year with this album, a nearly flawless collection of often dark, stripped down swamp romps. The tracks delicious gloomy “Evil” and rollicking piano-heavy “Coping Mechanism” are probably the finest in this stellar collection. It’s a toss-up as to the most exciting elements of their music: the beautifully haunting male/female harmonies or the better-than-most-novels story telling. Regardless the band has created an Americana album that will surely find appeal beyond its genre. A-
Road Warriors
This Month’s Hottest Shows BY SACHA DZUBA
10/4 – RAVEN
529 Bar Formed in 1974 in Newcastle, England by brothers John and Mark Gallagher (along with original drummer Paul Bowden). Raven became one of the forerunners of the thrash, speed and power metal genres. They are considered a large part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal which included brothers in arms, Iron Maiden. Dubbing their music “Athletic rock”, they embodied this to the point of wearing guards, helmets, and plates from various sports; often incorporating them into the playing of their instruments. These metallers are legendary; Metallica and Anthrax both had their first tour experiences opening for them. In 2001 Raven went on a long hiatus after guitarist Mark suffered a terrible accident; his legs being crushed by a wall collapsing on him. After years of rehabilitation, he is back on his feet along with brother John and drummer Joe Hasselvander; helping maintain Raven’s reputation for crazy high energy antics and regularly destroying their equipment in their live shows. Do not miss the unparalleled Raven, nevermore!
10/6 – LYKKE LI
The Tabernacle Originating from Sweden, Lykke Li initially arrived on the music scene with a mix of elec-
tro, soul, and pop music in the form of her first EP, Little Bit. She set vocals to several Röyksopp cuts, contributed a song for the soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, recorded with David Lynch & also U2, and had her songs featured in various television shows and films. All of this popular media attention makes Li seem like a typical mainstream artist, but I Never Learn (her latest release) is textured and unpolished. Li’s bluesy, raw, & heartfelt vocals, reverberating piano chords and irregularly strummed acoustic guitars couple with emotive confessional songwriting and cavernous production. “This album is about the shame and the guilt and the sadness and the regret you can experience after leaving someone,” says Li. Shades of Adele, Feist, and Florence + the Machine adorn Lykke Li’s work, but she is a force, sound, and style all to herself; do not miss this intense, emotive artist.
10/8 – CHVRCHES
The Buckhead Theatre Originating from Glasgow, Scotland; Chvrches are Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty. Recently gaining acclaim in the music scene, these three Scots use electronic minimalism to create their fantastic electro-pop in the vein of New Order, Erasure, OMD, and Yaz. Sonically uplifting with bubbling, glittering electronic soundscapes and melodies, their music is underlined by darker lyrical roots. On tour in support of their latest release, The Bones of What You Believe, their hits are sure to get you on your feet and moving. A night of shimmery synth-pop, get out your best dayglo 80’s clothes, it’s time to go to Chvrches.
10/09 – FLYLEAF
The Loft Hailing from Texas, hard rock band Flyleaf are characterized by melodic and harsh female vocals and chugging guitar riffs. After a recent pivotal musical crossroad that saw the departure of longtime front woman, Lacey Sturm; new vocalist Kristen May was welcomed to the band with open arms. Guitarist Jared Hartmann describes their experience with Kristen, “She fit right in with us. For a while, we didn’t know if we’d ever be able to play again. She brought this incredible energy to the table, and it inspired us.”. With a new vocalist behind the microphone, the band was renewed and reinvigorated leading to their latest album release, Between the Stars. Kristen brings a purely clear and crisp vocal style which compliments the heavy rock that Flyleaf are known for, creating a new chapter and sound for this powerhouse band. The Loft provides a perfect and intimate setting to reacquaint yourself with the new Flyleaf.
10/13 – SONATA ARCTICA
The Masquerade Sonata Arctica, a melodic/power metal band from Finland, are unleashed upon the states and celebrating their 15th anniversary. Lead singer Tony Kakko’s emotive tenor vocals wind through keyboard lines that race alongside melodic guitars. Oftentimes the guitars and keyboards are doubling and dueling in a style similar to Children of Bodom or Stratovarius…but far more melodic and uplifting. Evoking imagery of snowy forests and lone wolves, their latest album is Pariah’s Child, a return to their power metal roots merged with the other musical styles they’ve explored in their releases. Don’t be a pariah, be there when Sonata Arctica hit the stage, metal horns high and howling at the moon.
10/26 - SECRET CHIEFS 3
The Earl Constant in their inconsistency, this instrumental rock group is led by guitarist and composer Trey Spruance. Many of the Mike Patton faithful know Trey as guitarist to Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. His time with Patton has certainly had its effects, as SC3 is a mish-mash of styles and ideas. Influenced by and encompassing the sounds of Arabian, Indian, and Persian music, as well as surf rock, death metal, film scores and electronic music; this is musical brilliance at its most bizarre. Consisting of a vast and rotating cast of musicians, these are sounds that have to be heard to be believed. If you like Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, and Fantomas, you should not miss this show. This is the musical equivalent of a circus sideshow, don’t be afraid to look!
10/28 – JUDAS PRIEST W/ STEEL PANTHER
Gwinnett Center Arena Judas Priest are one of the progenitors of the classic heavy metal scene; known for their iconic trendsetting leather and studs S&M look, operatic metal vocal style, and twin lead guitars. Though frontman Rob Halford did leave the band, the “Metal God” has been back on the mike with his soaring vocal range, high screams and strong vibrato since 2003. After threatening to stop touring with their recent Epitaph tour, Judas Priest sadly did bid a farewell to founding guitarist K.K. Downing; but newcomer Richie Faulkner slotted perfectly in place and has even given the band an energetic and creative boost. Touring in support of their 17th and latest album, Redeemer of Souls, Judas Priest are celebrating over 40 years in the metal scene. Tour mates Steel Panther create parodic and ironic music that evoke hair metal glam bands of the 80’s, they’re sure to make you rock-out laughing. Bang your head and laugh along with Steel Panther and then hear and worship the hellfire and damnation sermons of reinvigorated and renewed metal icons, Judas Priest.

MUSIC OF THE VIKINGS
Wardruna Revives Ancient Nordic Folk Traditions BY BRET LOVE
T
HERE WAS A TIME BACK IN THE ‘80s and ‘90s when radio stations and MTV were great outlets for discovering new music. But these days, more often than not, I find my favorite artists through film and TV soundtracks. Such was the case with Wardruna, a Norwegian musical project created by Einar “Kvitrafn” Selvik. Selvik, formerly the drummer for Black Metal band Gorgoroth, created the project in 2003 to pursue his passion for Nordic spiritualism. Profoundly influenced by the runes of the Elder Futhark, the world’s oldest runic alphabet, he began working with former Gorgoroth frontman Gaahl (a.k.a. Kristian Espedal) and vocalist Lindy Fay Hella to craft an epic, ambient sound rooted in ancient folkloric traditions. Their second album, Yggdrasil (named after the tree that connects the nine worlds of Norse mythology), was released in March of 2013. But it wasn’t until Wardruna’s music was featured prominently in the History Channel TV show Vikings that the band began building buzz. After tracking Selvik down via his website, we were delighted to get a chance to speak with him about his interest in Norse history, the challenges of making his own reproductions of ancient instruments, and how his success with Vikings will impact Wardruna’s third album, which he hopes to release next year. What was your original inspiration for wanting to do this project? As a kid, I was really taken by ancient Norse stories and history. It was so different from the
monotheistic way of seeing of the world in terms of black and white, good and evil. It’s much more complex. During my teens, my fascination with the esoteric and spiritual side of the old traditions became deeper. But there was no one interpreting these things musically. I did the first Wardruna recording in 2002-2003, and it took me seven years to finish that album due to the whole process of learning about the instruments and obtaining them.
How did you find these instruments? When I started digging into the source material, I came across instruments that I had to have. At that point, there were very few people who made or played them. I either had to find someone to build it or build it myself. Natural instruments are different from any other types of instruments. They are alive in a sense, and have their own will. Making frame drums in the old way, I didn’t shoot the animal, but I skinned it, tanned it and scraped the skin. It’s a very monotonous, time-consuming process, but it’s actually quite beautiful because you’re slowing bringing the animal back to life in a new form. I have a more personal, animistic way of viewing my instruments after that process. Wardruna’s music is based on the runes of the Elder Futhark, the earliest known runic alphabet. How did they inspire you? In the Finnish tradition of folk medicine, the magical songs are always called runes. Knowing the runes’ secrets was considered to be the highest knowledge one could have. So it’s something I approach with great respect. We
have three different rune poems– Norwegian, Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon– and they’re like proverbs or riddles that are designed to educate you. In making musical renditions of them, my creative concept was to interpret them on their own premises. If I’m working with the B rune, which symbolizes birch trees, I go out in the forest and play on birch trees. If I’m working with water, I use the sound of water, standing in the middle of a river while doing all of the vocals. The idea is to capture the relevant places and implement them into the music. Have your fans from your metal career followed you into this new transition? Though I have a metal background, bands like Gorgoroth were just a job. Apart from it being a very powerful artistic expression, it wasn’t anything I was able to put my creative voice into. When I started playing with Gorgoroth and got to know Kristian, we found common ground in that we’re both pagans and very interested in our own roots and history. When I started Wardruna, it was a natural thing for me to include him. From the very beginning, he was the guy I bounced my ideas off of. We created the whole concept together. I was kind of surprised to see that so many people in the metal world are into Wardruna. The response has been overwhelming. How did you get involved with doing music for the TV show, Vikings? In the beginning they were supposed to film here in Norway. I tried to get in touch with them because I thought they needed some of
my sounds, but I didn’t get through to anyone. About 3 or 4 months before the first season aired we were contacted by the production of Vikings, and they wanted to license quite a bit of our music. They got a lot of positive response to the music. When they started working on the second season, they wanted to have more of my sound in the heart of the series. So they asked if I would be interested in working with Trevor Morris, the main composer of the series. We quickly found that we like working together, and the results of our collaboration. What’s the plan for the third and final album in the trilogy? The main plan is to make a good record, which I hope to have ready by the end of 2015. Being part of Vikings is a major opportunity for Wardruna to enchant new listeners. I see Wardruna being able to reach a much wider audience because the themes I’m working with are universal. It’s all about man’s relationship to nature, to each other and to something larger than yourself. That’s something I think most people relate to. I feel like this is just the beginning.

JUST DARLING
Frontman for The Darlings Talks on Latest Project and Jason Cruz & Howl BY JOHN B. MOORE
B
UDDY DARLING, FRONTMAN AND guitarist for The Darlings, always looked up to Jason Cruz as a musician. So it was pretty incredible to get him to sing on their last album. Flash forward a few years and his band is touring with Cruz, releasing their latest album on his label and Darling is even a member of Cruz’s side project, Jason Cruz & Howl. Darling sums up the experience quite succinctly. “I’m a lucky son of a bitch.” And Darling will be pulling double duty when his band, The Darlings, open up for Jason Cruz and Howl and then he steps up to play with the headliner each night this summer. Darling spoke recently about the band’s new record, Made of Phantoms, seeing his music evolve and hanging out with one of his punk rock idols. The last time I interviewed you guys was about four years ago, when The New Escape was coming out. Do you think the band has changed much since then? Yes the music has matured from punk into more of a rock n’ roll style and I think we have started to develop our own sound, however our hard work and relentless drive has not changed. Our live show has definitely sweetened the pot. We have been on the road touring for the past ten years and there’s nothing like the glory of a good show. I am also fueled by the fresh blood in the band. Andrew Tyler Murphy on drums is a madman and Hunter Z goes nuts on stage. Mainly we
all like good fucking rock n roll and our styles work well together. Me and Chris (Kranes), the bass player, have been together since 2006
If I remember right, Jason Cruz sang on that record as well. He joined you or a song on this new one and you guys are about to tour with his band. How far do you guys go back? Jason and I have been close for about six years, I think. He was one of my idols growing up and a huge influence on my vocal melodies and lyrical content. Now I get to be friends and play music with the dude... It’s a beautiful thing! I’m a lucky son of a bitch. We started a side project, Jason Cruz and Howl, about four years ago and he’s bent over backwards helping The Darlings where ever he can. Me and him definitely inspire each other I am excited to hit the road with both of the bands this summer. First time I will be playing double duty I’m very excited. What can you tell me about this new album? Raw, truthful and dark. It is the album I have always wanted to release. On our other two records you can kind of hear some styles clashing a bit. This is the first time I have complete control to write what I felt. We’re breaking away from the ‘vanilla punk rock with a mild Americana twist” and venturing into some riskier, darker territory. I think it’s important to take risks. We were lucky enough to work with some amazing musical geniuses on this record. The producer Andy Carpenter, my buddy Jason Freese from Green Day laid down some keys on a couple songs and Jason Cruz recorded and wrote
“Evangeline” with me. Also we have released the album through Jason Cruz’ new Indie label Echotone. The song, “There’s a Madman Living in Waco” really jumped out on the first listen. Can you talk a little bit about the inspiration behind that one? Cults..... great writing material I suppose (laughs). I think David Koresh actually has an original song called “There’s a madman living in Waco.” Kinda funny. It’s got some great slide guitar on the song. You guys tour a lot and are known for your live shows. Is it difficult to try and capture the feel of those live sets when you’re in the studio recording? No we’ve always been told we’re better live and that’s why I wanted a more organic and raw fell for this record. We were real careful to not go for that over polished sound. I love the studio… well most of the time. But the
stage is sacred, it’s what I live for. The glory of a good show. These new songs are very fun to play live. I think we play maybe three or four of the old songs (laughs). Are you one of those bands who would rather be touring or making records in the studio? I’m not sure. I guess whatever manifests... It took us a long time between the last record and this one, we played a lot on that old stuff. Maybe this time the next album will come sooner but I don’t know. You have to live a little and experience new things to write about. We’re ready to tour for now though. Those are all the questions I have. Anything else you want to cover? That’s it for now thanks for taking the time to talk with us. You can find everything on our website thedarlingsrocknroll.com. Keep an eye out for a new music video from us. We’ll start shooting next month.
THE INTERRUPTERS
New Album Gets Hellcat Records Up and Running Again BY JOHN B. MOORE
I
T’S BEEN AWHILE SINCE HELLCAT RECORDS, THE Epitaph offshoot co-founded by Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, last put out an album. But the stellar new record from The Interrupters, co-produced by Armstrong and featuring his sometime collaborator Kevin Bivona, was an appropriate enough reason to get the label up and running again. The debut album, featuring Aimee Interrupter on vocals, Kevin on guitar and his bothers Jesse and Justin, on drums and bass, is not that far removed from some of the work Armstrong has put out with Rancid and as Tim Timebomb, infectious music coated in 2 Tone Ska and Street Punk influences. The project initially started out as Aimee’s solo album, but with Kevin bringing in his twin brothers, it morphed into a full-fledged band. From that point, Armstrong was invited into the studio and the result is one of punk rock’s best debuts released so far this summer. Let’s start off with how the band first come together. I was writing my solo record with Kevin (Bivona) and he was producing. He brought the twins (Jesse and Justin
Bivona) in to work on it and we all had really good chemistry, so we decided to start a band. Kevin and the twins have been playing together since they were kids and I had already had good chemistry with Kevin so it all came together in a very natural way. Still haven’t finished that solo record! When and how did you first come to the attention of Tim? Tim and Kevin have been doing music together for years on various projects (Transplants, Jimmy Cliff). Tim co-wrote a few songs that were supposed to be for my album. When we made the shift into being a band he was just as excited as we were so he jumped on board right away as co-writer and producer. We were very lucky to have him. He got it right away and helped us develop our sound, he’s kind of like the fifth Interrupter.
What was he like to work with in the studio? It was amazing. We are all huge fans of his music and the records he has made. Being in the studio with him was so fun and spontaneous. We got so much done in such a short period of time because he made sure we weren’t overthinking it and we were being ourselves. It was very inspiring to make
the record with him. Given that you put your solo record on hold, how long had you been working on the songs that made it onto this record? When we got together as a band we pretty much started writing from scratch aside from some ideas we had already been kicking around. We got together with Tim one day, played him ideas, and we just developed the ones that felt good. We started recording the album like the next day so everything was pretty fresh to us. Can you talk a little bit about the inspiration behind song “Easy on You”? It’s a great song that I had to listen to a couple of times for the lyrics to really sink in. Sometimes I can be a little Catholic guilt ridden. I was trying to cheer myself up one day and the chorus popped into my head. That song is for anyone who is extra hard on themselves for things they can’t control. It made me feel better, so I’m hoping it does that for others.
Having started at solo, what is it like working as a band compared to going it alone? Does it ever get frustrating having to get a consensus on a song versus just being able to make the decision yourself? I’ve been solo for so many years. It feels like a weight off my shoulders that I can share responsibility with the boys. That being said, if I don’t wanna sing something, no one makes me. We all have each other’s backs. What’s next for the band? Lots of touring and writing!

TRACK SUITS 7 HOME RELEASES Tomorrow World Never Dies BY BLUE SULLIVAN
As I am crafting this, the biggest EDM festival ever to converge on the deep south, TomorrowWorld, is about to launch. Although I won’t be there, friend and contributor to The Greatest Singles Column in Human History, TJ Kenney, has valiantly volunteered to be my eyes and ears on the ground. In solidarity with him, and everyone else in attendance of this momentous event, is this collection of electronic audio brilliance:
ODD PARENTS
“Learn to Fly” (Maceo’s Flight Home Mix) Maceo Plex’s gorgeous refit of an alreadylovely Odd Parents track is EDM equally suited for both the dance floor and the bedroom. Marrying Burial’s ominous ambience and burrowing bass to early Moby’s raver hymnals (see: “Go”, “Everytime You Touch Me”), this is an anthem guaranteed to be on this author’s “Best of 2014” list in December. If you were at TW and missed him, shame on you.
ZHU
“Faded” (Odesza Remix) Speaking of bedroom-friendly jams, here’s one guaranteed to crash the playlist of any selfrespecting couple seeking something cool to set the mood. If you loved Massive Attack’s Mezzanine (which you should, because it was and still is f*cking perfect), then be prepared to again feel that indescribable flood of dopamine which accompanied the first time you heard that album. It’s that good. Retro Pick:
MASSIVE ATTACK
If you would like to hear this month’s tracks-and a few more great ones we didn’t have room to write about--check our “Track Suits Mix” at: mixcloud.com/tracksuits. (Special thanks to TJDJ and my brilliant sib Jody for their help in curating this.)
BY BRET LOVE AND JOHN MOORE
THE BATTERY Tired of waiting for the return of The Walking Dead to get your Zombie fix? This New England indie (shot in 15 days for about $6000) is surprisingly solid, tracking the misadventures of two former baseball players traveling the backroads of Connecticut after the zombie apocalypse. Writer/director/star Jeremy Gardner and his co-producer/co-star Adam Cronheim very nearly knock it out of the park in their award-winning debut, crafting a dramatic horror film that balances the fright with genuine heart and soul. THE GODZILLA COLLECTION To capitalize on the attention surrounding director Gareth Edwards’ reboot of the 60-year-old film franchise, Sony has released a ton of Godzilla titles on Blu-Ray at rock-bottom prices. Godzilla 2000 (which includes both the US and Japanese versions) is arguably the weakest of the bunch, with our favorite nuclear lizard battling an alien monster disguised as a UFO. But the shocker is that the double features– Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla/Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah/ Godzilla vs Megaguirus– more than hold their own against any Godzilla movie Hollywood has ever produced. GRIMM: SEASON 3 Rarely have I been more frustrated by a TV show’s promise than I was by Grimm, which was inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales but ultimately became a hot mess of mediocre acting, terrible writing and even worse “special effects.” Truth be told, I gave up on the show midway through Season 1. Season 3 shows improvement, striking a better balance between procedural police drama and supernatural creature-of-the-week horror. But when compared to similarly dark shows such as Sleepy Hollow and The Strain, Grimm still feels weak and watered-down for the masses. THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL This fantastic 6-DVD collection from the NBC show that ran though out the 1970s and early ‘80s is an essential keepsake for any music lover, with 100 live performances by diverse artists ranging from AC/DC to The Village People. Yes, some of the performances feel a bit dated (ahem, Gordon Lightfoot), but there are a slew of amazing sets crammed in here, including Fleetwood Mac, ELO and an Aerosmith performance that will convert the uninitiated. Though less well known, The Midnight Special was right up there with Soul Train and American Bandstand in introducing new music to the masses. THE NORMAL HEART Given the stellar cast– a brilliant Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts and sitcom-famous Jim Parsons in a small, but career-defining role– this HBO film, based on the Tony Award-winning play, was one of the best TV movies to come out this year. Despite the recent inexplicable Emmy losses, this story of politics and relationships set in 1980s New York (at the beginning of the HIV-AIDS crisis) is emotionally tough, but remarkably satisfying.
BIRD BRAIN
Matt Ryan’s Sizzling Start to the Season
BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
S
URE, MATT RYAN’S HAD gaudier stat lines than the one he had on Thursday, September 18 — the season-opening victory against rival New Orleans, where he tossed three touchdowns and passed for an Atlanta Falcons-high 448 yards, certainly comes to mind — but he’s probably never had a better overall professional game. Cool, calm and, at times, a little too collected for an NFL contest, Matty Ice was an astounding 21 of 24 for 286 yards and three TDs in a 56-14 smashing of Tampa Bay. “I don’t think anyone should ever doubt that Matt Ryan was going to come back and have a good game after the game last week,” said Falcons head coach Mike Smith, referring to the Falcons’ rough 24-10 loss to Cincinnati in Week 2. “He was on top of his reads, where to go with the football. There was some precise route running for the most part. He spun it about as well he has spun since we’ve been here and congratulations to Matt, over 85% completion.” So, when Ryan meets with the media for a post-game chat, he’s all smiles. As his coach just alluded, he had a phenomenal game. He tossed more touchdowns than incompletions. His squad moved into first place in the NFC South. No better time to get the two-time Pro Bowler’s thoughts on scoring in bunches, watching teammates make history and seeing his squad find its groove early in the 2014 season. On the 56-14 blowout... A fun night, it was. We talked about all week that we wanted to start fast and rebound from last week. I thought we did a great job of that collectively, all three phases. With that being said, even as good as tonight was, I think there are areas where we can improve and get better. But all in all, there was really good effort. I loved the energy from all three phases. We got the job done. It was a good night. On the offense clicking... Our objective as an offense is to try and score every time we touch the ball. Tonight, we did a pretty good job of putting up some points. Special teams added to it and the defense added to it. Defense had a turnover, an interception for a touchdown, but also a fumble recovery that puts us on the one-yard
line. Field position like that is pretty good. All three phases contributed to the scoring and great effort across the board. On the team’s ability to bounce back after a loss... I think, in this League, there are going to be weeks where it’s tough sledding, especially on the road. Sometimes you don’t play as well as you’d like. But good teams respond. Good teams come back and play better the following week. We got a long way to go to get where we want to go to, but this is a step in the right direction. On Devin Hester becoming the all-time leader in return touchdowns... You can’t say enough about him. Devin has been awesome since he got here. He is as good a teammate as you can ask for. He works as hard as anybody that I’ve been around and he’s extremely humble. I couldn’t be more happy for him to break the record. It was special that Deion [Sanders, the former record holder] was here as well. It’s always funny how things kinda have a way of working out like that. [Devin] was emotional. It’s really cool to see. A lot of hard work that he’s put into it. Just very, very happy for him. On the NFL schedule... These Thursday night games are always tough on the front end, physically [and] mentally, trying to get yourself as prepared as you can be to go out there and execute game plan. But they’re great on the back end because you get three extra days of rest, which, at any time of the year, is huge. I think guys will take advantage of that and get away from football for a day or two.

CHARMED BY THE...
New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum BY BRET LOVE; PHOTOS BY BRET LOVE & MARY GABBETT
I
F YOU’RE FASCINATED BY ZOMBIE lore, but your primary source of information about them is The Walking Dead, the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum is a must-see. This is perhaps the only place outside of Haiti where you’ll find an expert on the subject of Voodoo– owner Jerry Gandolfo– willing to tell you how to make your own human zombie. His explanation is full of fascinating details, involving poison extracted from a blowfish and put into someone’s shoe, where it’s absorbed into the sweat glands and induces a catatonic state similar to death. Later, the victim is given an antidote and powerful hallucinogens, making them appear to rise from the dead. Gandolfo, a practicing Catholic from a Creole family who took over as caretaker of the Museum a few years after his older brother– “Voodoo Charlie”– passed away, clearly relishes sharing these stories of the supernatural (or superstition, depending on your view). The 61-year-old former insurance man, who leads many of the museum’s tours, typically has a tired, hangdog look about him, but gets a gleam in his eyes and the hint of a sly smile whenever he uses storytelling to toy with visitors’ expectations. And while skeptics may scorn the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum’s hodgepodge collection of voodoo dolls, African masks, grisgris (or talismans), dusty historic portraits of “voodoo queens” and human skulls as kitschy, for others it’s a loving paean to an ancient African religion dating back hundreds of years.
penchant for herbs, potions, charms and amulets with them. In the Dominican Republic, the practice became known as Vudu; in Haiti it was Vodou; and in Louisiana– the epicenter of the U.S. slave trade– Voodoo was born. Because enslaved Africans outnumbered European settlers by a ratio of two to one and most slaves were owned by a small subset of wealthy whites, West African culture continued to thrive in Louisiana. After the Embargo Act of 1808 ended the importation of slaves, laws were passed to prevent the separation of slave families, ensuring that these ancient spiritual beliefs were passed down from generation to generation. Over time, African folk traditions merged with the Catholic practices of the French Creole culture, creating many of the “Hoodoo” elements (gris-gris, voodoo dolls, etc) we associate with Voodoo today.
THE ORIGINS OF VOODOO/VODUN Voodoo (a.k.a. vudu, vodun, vodou or vaudoux) is a term used to encompass the traditional religions of coastal West Africa, including the Ewe people of Ghana and Togo, the Fon people of Togo and Benin, and the Yoruba of Nigeria. These religions center around divine vodun spirits that govern the Earth, ranging in power from major deities that govern the forces of nature to ethnic vodun, which protect certain clans or tribes. There’s a Creator known as Nana Buluku, her offspring Mawu and Lisa (the moon and sun), Mawu’s child Legba, and dozens of other deities. This hierarchy is strangely similar to that of the saints of Catholicism, with which voodoo traditions are often fused. When the slaves were stolen from West Africa and spread throughout the Caribbean and the Americas in the 17th and 18th century, they took their spiritual beliefs (which include a healthy dose of ancestor worship) and their
INSIDE THE NEW ORLEANS HISTORIC VOODOO MUSEUM Like many of the world’s polytheistic pagan folk religions, Voodoo is largely matriarchal. Voodoo Queens are revered, typically presiding over ceremonial meetings and sacred rituals and concocting charms and potions for members of their community. Laveau was the most famous Voodoo Queen of all, renowned for her magical powers and influence, which included convincing followed to attend Catholic Mass as a way to hide their true spiritual beliefs. Today, Gandolfo leads daily tours to Laveau’s tomb in the nearby St Louis Cemetery No. 1, where devout Voodoo followers still leave offerings and ask for favors. We learned about New Orleans’ Skull & Bone Gangs– which appear in the 7th Ward and Tremé every Mardi Gras dressed as skeletons, warning local children of the dangers of drugs and alcohol– and how they and the Mardi Gras Indians are connected to similar secret societies in Africa. We learned about the Rougarou– a cross between a French werewolf, African vampire and Voodoo zombie– and the French Louisiana legend about how the half-man, halfalligator spirit emerges at night to suck blood and steal souls. And of course we learned about Zombies– not the myth, but the “Life After Death” rituals occasionally practiced in Haitian Vodou, as described in the book The Serpent & the Rainbow by ethnobotanist Wade Davis. The great thing about the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum is that you can view at as a quirky, creepy bit of Louisiana kitsch, or you can approach it– as Gandolfo clearly does– as a loving tribute to a historically significant religion that remains alive and well in Louisiana today (estimates suggest that around 2% of the area’s population still observes Voodoo traditions in some form). Either way, it’s a fascinating place unlike any other museum I’ve ever seen.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS BY BRET LOVE
A
UTUMN IS OUR FAVORITE time of year, and arguably the best time of year to get out and ex-plore Georgia’s natural beauty. Here are a few great gear options we’ve found that make outdoor COLEMAN recreation even more enjoyable:
TENTS
One of the cooler ideas we’ve seen this year is the Instant 2-For-1 Tent & Shelter from COLEMAN (coleman. com), which gets points for adaptability. You can take it to a picnic and just use the 14 X 8 shelter, or attach the inner 8-person tent– big enough for two queen size air beds– for camping out… We’re big fans of KELTY (kelty. com), and their 3-season Granby 4 tent is another gem in the line. The 58 sq ft of floor space is big enough to sleep 4 people, while the roomy vestibule adds space for storing gear and hanging out. With an integrated mud mat to keep your feet clean, it almost feels like home… BROOKS RANGE (BrooksRange. com) is a new brand for OFT, but we were really impressed by the onepole design and spaceto-weight ratio of their 2-person Tension 30 tent. Roomy, rugged and under 3 pounds, it’s a perfect choice for backpackers.

COOKING
Cooking outdoors is one of our favorite things: It always makes food taste better. The El-ektra FE Cook System from OPTIMUS STOVES (OptimusStoves.com) is one of the most intriguing camp cooking designs we’ve seen. It’s slim, versatile and modular, weighing just over a pound and boiling water in 2.5 minutes… The Small Basecamp Kitchen from Kelty is larger– offering a wide surface area for prep, wind protection for your stove, and a zippered pantry that holds up to 80 pounds of food– yet it folds down to just 24” x 17” x 4”… Originally designed for airline employees, the Crew Cooler II from EBAGS (eBags.com) is equally handy for cookouts, with a dry compartment on top, a front compartment for silverware and napkins and such, and an insulated cold compartment with a PEVA liner that can be taken out for easy cleaning.
FISHING
I’ve recently taken an interest in flyfishing, and the Chattahoochee offers a great place to practice. The folks at ORVIS (orvis.com) are offering great deals for newbs like me: You get a complete All-in-One Fly Fishing Rod & Reel Set for $160, a hard-sided Safe Passage CarryIt-All Rod & Gear Case (which holds up to 6 fly rods and allows for customized organization of reels and fly boxes) for the same price, and a Safe Passage Angler’s Day Pack (with insulated cooler compartment and compression straps to
hold your rod tube) for $140. Trout, here I come!
BACKPACKS
Based in Seattle, TOM BIHN (TomBihn. com) is an indie outfitter with a reputation for superior quality and innovative design. Their 31-liter Guide’s Pack blends the aesthetics of old school camping gear with decidedly modern functionality, with a large top pocket, top loading main compartment, and fully customizable interior organization. Beyond that, it looks really cool, perfect for the city or the trail… The Z35 pack from GREGORY (GregoryPacks.com) is a 35-liter day pack designed for hiking/backpacking, with CrossFlo suspension to provide cooling airflow, moisture-wicking mesh on the harness and waist belt, and side/bottom compression straps and hideaway axe/trekking pole loops for carry-ing your gear.
SLEEPING BAGS
Camping gear has been changing at lightning speed in recent years. We love seeing new ideas such as the BESITO GOOD KIT FROM TICLA (ticlapr. blogspot.com), which combines a sleeping bag, sleeping mat and oversized stuff sack into one easy-tocarry package. The sleeping bag’s liner is as luxe as it could be, with a 2-sided design that works for warmer or cooler climates. It’s perfect for first-time campers… The Backcountry Bed Sleeping Bag FROM SIERRA DESIGNS (SierraDesigns.com) is another innovative concept, eliminating the standard mummy-style bag inn favor of zipper less access through a large oval opening and an oversized integrated comforter, which allows you to sleep on your back, side or stomach. Insulated with 600-fill or 800-fill DriDown and incorporating an integrated sleeping pad sleeve, the bag has earned 2014 Editors’ Choice Awards from Backpacker and Climbing magazines… The BOOT JACK 24 is a more traditional mummy-style bag from Big Agnes (BigAgnes.com), with DownTek water repellant insulation and patented Insotect Flow technology. But, at a price about half that of the other sleeping bags reviewed here, it’s perfect for no-frills backpackers on a budget.
HAMMOCK
In keeping with this month’s innovative design theme, we’ve got to give a shoutout to EA-GLE’S NEST OUTFITTERS (EaglesNestOutfittersInc.com). We’ve long been impressed by their two-person DoubleNest Hammocks, but their new HouseFly Rain Tarp allows outdoor lovers an adaptable alternative to tent camping. The floor-length sides and overlapping doors create an awesome weatherproof fortress for your hammock, keeping you warm, dry, comfortable and elevated no matter what time of year you choose to use it.

Now that SUPER BOWL XLV is over, football fans can get to the real issue: Will there be a 2011 season? If you let NFL commissioner Roger Goodell tell it, a new collective bargaining agreement is imminent. But listen to others close to the situation and they’ll say it’s not such a sure thing. While officials work out the numbers, Fanatic knows three things that’ll happen, lockout or no lockout: 1) An SEC defender (Auburn’s Nick Fairley or LSU’s Patrick Peterson) will be the No. 1 pick in the Draft; 2) An 18-game season will be approved; 3) Super Bowl XLVI will kick-off as planned on Feb. 5, 2012 in Indianapolis.
