FILM
COMEDY
OUT ON FILM
A Festival with a Rainbow Carpet BY STEVE WARREN
W
HEN OUT ON FILM STARTED, in 1987, a majority of Americans would probably have said they didn’t know anyone who was Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender (LGBT). Most of them would have been wrong, of course, but many LGBTs didn’t feel comfortable sharing their status. That was then, this is now, when only a few Kim Davises don’t know they have LGBT friends, neighbors, co-workers and/or family members. Most of this year’s films, showing October 1-8 at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinemas, reflect society’s newfound diversity; and audiences will too. Festival Director Jim Farmer, who married his longtime partner shortly after this year’s Supreme Court decision, says the rainbow carpet will be rolled out for all kinds of movie lovers: “We’ve been delighted that our audiences have become more diverse over the years, to include heterosexual patrons who just want to come and see great stories. Our films may have an LGBT core but much of what we screen is universal.” There are a few throwbacks. Beautiful Something (Oct. 4, 9:15 p.m.) takes place in an all-gay world of men on the prowl and Liz in September (Oct. 5, 8:15 p.m.) is about a heterosexually married woman who jumps the fence when she meets a predatory lesbian. The latter has an excuse because it’s based on a play, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, that opened in 1980. My favorite film in the festival How to Win at Checkers (Every Time) (Oct. 5, 7:35 p.m.), is about a modern family in Thailand where one of two brothers is gay and has a transgender friend. Their problems stem from poverty, not societal prejudice. In the opening night film, Fourth Man Out (Oct. 1, 7:15 p.m.), a 24-year-old (Evan Todd) finally tells his three best friends he’s gay. Nothing changes except that they try to help him meet the right guy instead of the right gal. Of the two sisters in Addicted to Fresno (Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m.), Natasha Lyonne is a lesbian and Judy Greer a sex addict who’s not particular. An accidental death and minor crime spree complicate their lives in one of the better fall comedies, if you’re not afraid of edgy. The closing feature, Guidance (Oct. 8, 8:30 p.m.), is about an unemployed actor (writerdirector Pat Mills) who masquerades as an unorthodox high school guidance counselor. Everyone but him knows he’s gay and no one cares, except a gym teacher who’s attracted to him. The last three are all comedies to some extent. At the other end of the spectrum are documentaries, Upstairs Inferno (Oct. 3, 12:20 p.m.) and The Guy with the Knife (Oct. 5,
Comic Iliza Shlesinger Checks in From Across the Pond
BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

In both cases activists had to push authorities to take action, but The Guy with the Knife turns into a surprising story of redemption. On the lesbian side, Jodie Foster probably holds the record for the slowest emergence from the closet, beating Lily Tomlin’s record, while Ellen DeGeneres did it in three words. Kristen Stewart put at least one foot outside the closet recently, following last year’s revelation by Ellen Page, who plays Julianne Moore’s partner in Freeheld (Oct. 4, 7:15 p.m.), a true story that illustrates why the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage was necessary. Sports fans will be pleased with three documentaries about LGBT athletes. More specific are Game Face (Oct. 8, 6:30 p.m.), about lesbian transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox and gay college basketball player Terrence Clemens; and Mind/Game: The Unquiet Journey of Chamique Holdsclaw (Oct. 6, 7 p.m., 8:45 p.m.), which focuses on the local basketball star and her mental problems. Other local celebs are on view in Queer Moxie (Oct. 4, 3 p.m.), a documentary about performance artists which will have its world premiere at the festival. Margarita, with a Straw (Oct. 4, 11 a.m.) is most notable for the astounding performance of Kalki Koechlin as a young woman with cerebral palsy who leaves her familial cocoon in India to go to school in New York, where she spreads her sexual wings in both directions. If there’s an award for the wildest premise it should go to Two 4 One (Oct. 3, 2:30 p.m.), in which a man who hasn’t completely transitioned gets pregnant accidentally while helping his former lesbian girlfriend artificially inseminate herself. It’s not entirely serious but strikes the right balance. Hey, it’s a film festival. See what intrigues you. Some of these films will show up in theaters or video venues, while for others it will be your only chance. For the full schedule, tickets, and information about all the films, go to outonfilm.org. LONDON CALLING O SAY ILIZA SHLESINGER IS BUSY is an understatement. Currently on tour, she is also working on two television pilots, compiling material for a comedy special due at the end of the year and hosts Separation Anxiety, a new TBS game show debuting this fall. TIGER STYLE!
Explores Modern Asian Culture
BY MARCI MILLER
W
E’VE ALL HEARD THE NEWS stories about Tiger Moms, moms of Asian descent that push their children hard to achieve in academics and music. And most of the time this parenting style works leading offspring to become successful in school, careers and life. But what if it doesn’t work out so well? That’s the story of Tiger Style! the new show opening at the Alliance Theatre on September 30 from Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition winner Mike Lew and directed by the Tony Award-nominated Moritz von Stuelpnagel. We recently spoke to playwright Mike Few, who drew on the experiences of his own tiger family to bring this new show to life. How did you come up with the premise of TIGER STYLE!? For a long time I wrote about pretty much anything but my family. But then the concept of “Asian tiger parenting” reached wide public consciousness and I started to notice a backlash that I felt was unfounded. People insisted that this style of high-expectations
disciplinarian parenting could only beget antiparental resentments, mental breakdowns, and suicide. Yet here I am happy with my parents, relatively sane, and alive. So Tiger Style! is a play about tiger parenting from someone who’s actually been there and an attempt to “write about my family” in a way that moves the race debate in theater forward by dispensing with outdated tropes. I wrote it during my last year at Juilliard (which was brilliant for not placing cultural expectations upon me), and the play was so ready to come out of me that I’d wake up in the middle of the night and find my laptop in the dark and start writing. I shot out the first draft in under two weeks. (Before, you know, painstakingly editing and rewriting for two years afterward.) What are both the positive and negative effects that “Tiger Parenting” has had on you growing up and today? My parents are secondgeneration Chinese-American (born in the US) but they retained a very immigrant work ethic and a firm faith in the value of a good education. They were raised by immigrants yet they worked hard, got into UC Berkeley on scholarships and eventually went on to be doctors. My sister
and I went to Yale and our cousins went to Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Stanford. I don’t think this emphasis on education (or the many sacrifices necessary to become such high-achievers) was wrong per se, but I do think it was in some ways short-sighted. Not because tiger parenting doesn’t work; clearly it does work. But after all of that schooling I think there are a lot of big life questions that IQ alone can’t address and there are a lot of social justice issues and instances of unconscious bias in the workplace that education alone can’t combat. Like your characters in TIGER STYLE! did you face any disappointmentswhen you entered the real world? All the time. The theater is not a meritocracy and we do anything we can not to attach metrics to art. It’s taking me much longer to “succeed” in the theater than I ever dreamed. But for all the setbacks three things keep me motivated. First, I’m so grateful for my community of artists, because ultimately I write plays not for external recognition but to feed and be fed by my peers. Second, I’ve tried really hard to shift from an external gauge of success to an internal one; as long as I’m challenging myself in my writing and growing as an artist I’m happy. And finally I think of the fact that my grandparents fled starvation in China and settled in a country where they had absolutely no bearings, and I think of how my parents grew up dirt poor and were still able to rise past that and train to be doctors. So whatever disappointments I’ve faced feel pretty small in comparison.
This is your second show that’s played at the Alliance – compare TIGER STYLE! to your previous show, BIKE AMERICA. I think a lot of my plays are a sort of comedic temperature-taking of where we’re at in America. In the case of Bike America it was about the millennial generation and the rite of passage of the American road trip. Tiger Style! is about the generational acculturation of Asians in America. In both cases I want to make adventurous plays with crackling humor, laced with deeper questions about who we are as Americans. What is your next project? I’m currently working on an adaptation of Richard III set in high school called Teenage Dick. It’s a play that attempts to explode tropes about the disabled by re-examining the most famous disabled character of all time. The play is a commission from The Apothetae, a new company that was formed to shed light on “the disabled experience.” I’m also co-writing books/lyrics on a new musical called Bhangin’ It alongside my wife Rehana Lew Mirza and composer Samuel Willmott. Bhangin’ It draws from the high stakes world of intercollegiate bhangra (Indian folk dance) competitions. It’s about a biracial (half-Indian) girl named Mary who gets kicked off her college bhangra team for “not being Indian enough” so she forms a ragtag team of her own.

THIS IS JUST A TRIBUTE
How Australian Pink Floyd Became the World’s Greatest Tribute Band
BY BRET LOVE
B
ACK IN 1988, BEFORE THE term “tribute band” had been coined, a group of crazy Aussies from Adelaide got together and decided to play Pink Floyd songs exclusively. They had no money for stage production, no industry connections, just a passion for one of the world’s most beloved rock bands. Six years later, guitarist David Gilmour came backstage after an APF show in London, and later invited them to attend an after-show party for Floyd’s The Division Bell tour. In 1996, Australian Pink Floyd played Gilmour’s 50th birthday, performing with several of their iconic heroes. With Gilmour’s blessing, they went on tour the world thanks to incredible concerts that faithfully recreate Pink Floyd’s sound, feel and look, right down to the massive projection screen and inflatable pig. We recently spoke with bassist/vocalist Colin Wilson to talk about how Australian Pink Floyd became the most successful tribute act in the world. Let’s start off talking about the origins of the band. How does one decide to launch a tribute act to one of the greatest bands of all time? It was a totally organic thing. There was no specific decision to take over the world or anything. Just the desire to try and recreate the sound and feel of Pink Floyd’s music and then see if there was an audience who would want to come and see/listen to us. PG 12 • October 2015 • insiteatlanta.com
Your bio describes creating the sounds necessary to perform Pink Floyd correctly as “one of the most important aspects of the band.” What were the biggest challenges? Every part of it has been a challenge. The sounds that Pink Floyd created in their recordings are paramount to the music sounding the way that it does… that, and the actual musicianship of the four musicians who wrote these songs. It all works together, and that is why those recordings still stand up today. There’s a quality there that isn’t always as evident in contemporary music. What was the reaction like in the early days, before you guys had the cash for your amazing sound and light show? I think it’s fair to say that it was a very mixed reaction. We started out on this venture before the whole “tribute band” title was coined, so to some degree we were trying to educate the audience that it was OK to do this. Pink Floyd fans, by their very nature, are passionate and almost protective. So we were met with a lot of skepticism in the beginning– and even now, to a certain degree– by some fans. The thing is that we are just like them. We demand of ourselves that the music is done justice, and the production value is so important to create the right atmosphere so that everybody has a total Pink Floyd experience when they see us. We like to give good value for the money! Did you ever imagine you’d be as huge as you
are now, more than 20 years later? In a word, no! We dreamed, of course, but certainly never expected anything. We really take one day at a time, and take one tour at a time.
Can you talk about the feelings of validation when David Gilmour came backstage after your show? It was such a surreal experience to meet him. He was so generous with his comments to us about our show and was very complimentary, if not slightly bemused! It was a total shot in the arm for us as a struggling band. What was it like playing his 50th birthday party and performing with several Floyd members? Again, surreal! It was also nerve-racking, to say the least. Not only were the members of Pink Floyd in the audience, but also other famous faces, such as the late George Harrison, for example! We likened the whole experience to being like students playing to their masters. It was all over in a heartbeat, but we’ll never forget it. You guys have grown in terms of popularity and production value considerably over the years. Is there internal pressure to top yourselves with each new tour? Yes there is, because we are all perfectionists! We review everything each year and try to make small improvements wherever we can. Obviously we have budget constraints that Pink
Floyd wouldn’t necessarily have, so it’s difficult to keep improving everything. But we feel we have a pretty good show at the moment. As long as the audiences keep coming and go away smiling, we’re happy. Why do you think tribute acts like TAPF are so incredibly popular these days? I simply think it’s because of the quality of the music that was written and recorded back in the day. People want to either relive those times from their youth, or they want to experience the music for the first time in a live setting. What can audiences expect from your current tour? I think that what you get with us is a band that has been developing this show for over 20 years. You get the music of Pink Floyd recreated as faithfully as possible. We have one of the best touring light shows that you’ll ever see, with lasers, inflatables and projected video onto the circular screen that is synonymous with Pink Floyd. It’s a total Pink Floyd experience.

Album Reviews
REVIEWS BY BRET LOVE, LEE VALENTINE SMITH AND JOHN B. MOORE
The Zombies
Still Got That Hunger
(Cherry Red/The End Records) It’s hard to believe that in five decades of existence, the Zombies have only released six studio albums. But in the case of the progressive psych outfit from St Albans, quality unequivocally wins over quantity. The Who could learn a few “less is more” lessons from the Zombies. And like the Who, they feature the two original, core members. But founders Colin Blunstone (vocals) and Rod Argent (keyboards and vocals) have been on a solid reunion vibe since the early 2000’s after sporadic attempts in the ‘90s. With over a decade of dedicated touring and songwriting, the group does indeed still have that hunger referenced in the title. A band of this vintage is generally coasting on a wave of pure nostalgia and if they do decide to record, it’s usually to rehash hits from their catalog to recoup publishing rights. Hunger is definitely not one of those records. It’s a modern take on the band’s airy, often R&B-tinged guitar and keyboard-driven sound. They do pause to reflect on the past a bit, which seems an unwritten law for aging rockers offering some introspective advice from their younger selves. (For further proof, check out any Paul McCartney album from the past 30 years.) But here, the past serves as an inspiration to carry on into the future. “I won’t cry for the past / For I’ve re-found my freedom at last,” to quote “Movin’ On,” the charmingly wise opening track. Elsewhere their fondness for keyboard-driven, soulful rock (“Now I Know I’ll Never Get Over You”) ranges to Blunstone’s famously hushed delivery (“Little One”). As the band bravely face their own mortality with “Edge of the Rainbow,” “And We Were Young Again” and “Chasing The Past,” they seem determined to leave an indelible legacy of intelligent pop-rock. The Zombies’ new album is strong (and yes hungry) enough to become the perfect bookend to their classic “Odessey [SIC] and Oracle” from 1968. –Lee Valentine Smith
Greg Holden
Chase The Sun
(Warner Brothers) Once in a while, the Internet introduces the world to a worthy talent. Such is the case with British-born singersongwriter Greg Holden. The talented and handsome artist first gained attention by posting his performances on You Tube. After a string of successful independent releases, the major labels came a-calling and he was taken under the mega-corporate wing of Warner Brothers. The result was released in April and continues to grow in popularity as fall arrives. The big-budget, major-label production touches are evident but not overwhelming and his original vision remains as distinct as on some of his earliest online posts. The title track arrives at the halfway point of the track-list and it’s a fitting crossroads of the overall theme of the collection. “Go Chase The Sun” is basically an empowerment anthem that encourages both personal and global evolution while tending to
the minute details of everyday life. Meanwhile, “Save Yourself” reiterates the core concept of the song cycle in a delightful way, by stressing personal expression and freedom. Probably the one track to garner the most attention is the intensely personal “Boys in the Street.” The emotional narrative follows the heartbreaking story of a young man verbally abused by his father. It’s a tough tune to follow, but “Give It Away” ups the intensity, by insisting we should simply give away all of the things that hold us back in life. The overall hopeful disc ends on a crisp folk-rock note with “The Next Life,” offering the anticipation for love within the life we know and into the unknown expanse of the afterlife. Greg Holden opens for Vintage Trouble at Terminal West on October 20. –Lee Valentine Smith
Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams Self-titled
(Red House Records) The complete credits of multi-taskers Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams could quite easily fill this entire issue. Campbell is probably best known as Bob Dylan’s lead guitarist from the elusive artist’s transcendent ‘97 to 2004 period. Williams has worked with her share of illustrious icons as well, including stints with Phil Lesh and Levon Helm. On their debut, the couple stand center-stage for a wide-ranging cache of material that deftly showcases their musical diversity and instrumental dexterity. An apt historical comparison could be the musical and personal teaming of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, or even much more recently in the Steve Martin and Edie Brickell duo recordings. From the reckless abandon of “Bad Luck Charm” to the conversant covers of “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” and “Attics of My Life,” the pair are backed by a number of special guests including their late collaborator Helm and Bill Payne from Little Feat. Currently on the road, Campbell and Williams have a stunning Americana-tinged set to offer early arrivals on Jackson Browne’s current tour, so get there early when he plays Chastain on October 10. After their performance, they’ll remain on stage as part of Browne’s talented ensemble. –Lee Valentine Smith
Simon & Garfunkel
The Complete Columbia Albums Collection
(Columbia/Legacy) Ever wonder who was the most pissed off guy in the 70’s? My money is on Art Garfunkel. Simon & Garfunkel had just left the 60’s behind with a few Grammys and a ton of stellar songs on their resume. After calling it quits, (apparently Garfunkel pulled the plug so he could embark on an acting career) Paul Simon took a year or two off and comes out with his amazing solo debut… meanwhile Garfunkel settles into his lifetime role as punch line to a slew of jokes for the next few decades, while sitting by the phone waiting for the occasional invitation from Simon for a reunion tour. But as a reminder of just how great the two were as a duo, Legacy has just re-released the Simon & Garfunkel collection on 180 gram vinyl, and it’s even better than you remembered.
• Wednesday Morning, 3 AM – Admittedly this one is not going to make anyone’s list of best debut albums, but a decent enough start for the band. A bulk of the songs were written by Simon, including “The Sound of Silence,” a few traditionals and a so-so cover of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” • Sounds of Silence – Ok, now this is more like it. Despite inexplicably including “The Sound of Silence” (again), the album includes other Simon-penned tunes, including the brilliant “I Am A Rock” and the very-dated, but still solid “We’ve Got a Groovy Thing Goin’.” • Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme – The dreadful title track aside, this album is the first in a trio of brilliant albums the band would put out before imploding. Songs like “Homeward Bound” and “The 59th Street Bridge” are still hard to resist decades later. • Bookends – “Mrs. Robinson,” “Hazy Shade of Winter”… along with being a simply stellar album, Bookends also found the band moving further and further away from their mellow, folkie debut and on a more rock… or at least pop-infused path that would keep Simon on the music charts for the next couple of decades. • Bridge Over Troubled Water – If you have only one Simon & Garfunkel album, this is the one you own. And for good reason. Along with the title track, it includes “Cecilia,” “The Boxer,” “The Only Living Boy in New York,” “Bye Bye Love”… there is not a weak track on this album. • Greatest Hits – Um, the title pretty much says it all. –John B. Moore
Mad Season
Live at the Moore
(Columbia/legacy) In terms of 1990s supergroups, Mad Season was easily one of the best. Comprised of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, Screaming Trees’ drummer Barrett Martin and Walkabouts’ bassist John Baker Saunders – all Seattle residents riding high on the success of grunge at the time - the side project ran from 1994 until Saunders death in 1999. Though they only put out one record, 1995’s Above, which went on to sell more than half a million albums in the U.S. alone, bootlegs have been traded for years by fans desperate for new music from the group. The band put out a VHS of their hometown show, Live at The Moore, the same year Above was released and Columbia eventually released the show on DVD and CD, but Legacy – to honor the show’s 20th anniversary, has finally put the set out on vinyl for the first time. Spread over two LPs, the remastered set features live versions of 10 songs from their record as well as a powerful cover of John Lennon’s “I Don’t Want to Be a Soldier.” Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan also adds in some commanding vocals on “Long Gone Day.” With both Saunders and Staley both gone, there is no chance for a proper Mad Season reunion, but this live set should serves as a some comfort for fans of the group. –John B. Moore
The Memories Home Style
(Randy) The Memories’ latest, Home Style, is the perfect antidote to this past summer’s party records. Crammed with lo-fi, mellow pop songs, the record is a great way to wind down with a beer or bong at the end of the day, while trying to escape the thumping bass and inane lyrics screaming out of the radios of passing cars. The Portland band was able to squeeze 17 tracks onto this record and just about everyone has earned its right to be there with subtle nods to jangle pop and psychedelia and even a few hints to ‘80s New Wave (particularly on “Dancing in My Dream”). The music is not complicated, but that’s the point. A perfect soundtrack to a chill summer and unlike anything that’s being played on the radio today (thankfully). –John B. Moore
The Kickback
Sorry All Over the Place
(Jullian Records) Thanks to a slew of cheap-to-free recording software anyone can make an album’s worth of music now, regardless of how mediocre their sound is. The guys that make up Chicago’s (by way of South Dakota) The Kickback, however, took their time building up to a full length. Through years of touring and three EPs, the four-piece indie rock outfit built up a strong collection of tried-and-true rockers and finally committed them to their first proper full length, Sorry All Over the Place. The 10 songs that make up the debut are lyrically complex but delivered with an easy, but driven college rock vibe that flirts with power pop and classic pop rock at times. The result manages to be both original and familiar. You should also check out the band’s fantastic podcast Diary of a Disas-tour: where they cover everything from being a touring band to Michael Keaton and The Muppets… but pick up their debut album first. –John B. Ben Lee
Love is the Great Rebellion
(Warner Bros) It’s been 20 years since Ben Lee’s solid debut Grandpaw Would and over the years he’s experimented a bit with his sound, but has long since settled into a comfortable vibe of somewhat poppy acoustic music for his aging fan base – a James Taylor for Generation X. His latest, Love is the Great Rebellion - his tenth album and surprisingly his first for a major label – Is pretty much what we have come to expect from a Ben lee album over the past few years; optimistic, if a tad bit earnest lyrics, some mellow sing-along and a handful of peppier sing-alongs. While there is definitely and audience out there for these types of songs (mainly the folks who pull together soundtracks for Gray’s Anatomy), the album is not exactly original and probably won’t bring about the excitement many felt for Lee’s first few recordings back in the 1990s. –John B. DIET CIG
Takes on the World BY JOHN B. MOORE
W
HAT STARTED AS A REQUEST for a lighter at a house party has snowballed into a full time band, with an EP, tours and now a new 7”. But more on the origin story of Diet Cig shortly. Comprised of Alex Lucinao and Noah Bowman, the upstate New York-based duo has barely been around for a year and has already won over fans across the globe thanks to their unpretentious ditties that sound smart, simple and unbeholden to any obvious classification. As the band preps the release of a new 7” to coincide with a fall tour, we checked in with singer Alex Luciano to talk about how the band first came together.
FOREIGN TONGUES written along with the others that made it on the EP? All the songs were written in New Paltz, around the winter of 2014-2015. The songs on the 7” were written pretty shortly after the ones on the EP... feels like we’ve been playing them forever. Have you thought about putting out a full length? We’re currently writing what will probably end up as a full length, hopefully out sometime next year. We’ve been traveling all summer and so there’s a lot of fun stuff to write about. We’re sooo excited to get more tunes out... it means more time to dance during our live set!

THE TOADIES
Re-Imagine Their Music, Tour BY JOHN B. MOORE
T
HE TOADIES HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR more than 25 years – with a few breaks here and there – so you can’t blame the Texas rockers for wanting to try something different. With their sixth and latest album, Heretics, the group has decided to re-work and re-interpret some of their earlier songs with acoustic guitars and mandolins. There’s even a fascinating take on Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” As the band gears up for a tour this fall, drummer Mark Reznicek spoke recently about the idea for the new record, pulling together the band’s annual three-day music festival and their future as brew masters. Before we talk about the new record, I wanted to let you know that I tried the Toadies Texas Bock and loved it. How did that come about? Was it a one-time thing or do you plan on brewing more beer? Martin House is a brewery in our hometown of Fort Worth, and last year they approached us about collaborating on a Toadies-themed beer. It was the 20th anniversary of our debut album Rubberneck, so that beer was called Rubberneck Red, and proved to be a success. So we decided to reteam for another one this year, Bockslider. Finally Ready with their Debut
BY JOHN B. MOORE
T
HE GUYS IN THE BOSTON INDIE rock four-some, Foreign Tongues have had a few one-off visits to recording studios over the years. Mainly quick sessions to record singles and splits here and there, but thanks to the recent signing with indie/ punk label No Sleep Records they finally had the time and money to put their attention to working on a proper calling card for the band. Their debut, Fragile, As Said Before, is a solid mix of modern indie rock and emo with some subtle nods to early 1990’s college radio noise rock staples. So, a perfect fit for the creatively eclectic No Sleep label. Just before the release of their record, singer/ guitarist Cameron Moretti spoke with us about the band’s founding, finally getting enough time in the studio and a brief review of the current season of True Detective. Let’s start off with how the band first started? The band started four years ago. James (Scuderi) and I began just bouncing some songs off one another and recorded some rough demos to listen back too. It was pretty simple finding other members to jam with. It ended up being one of our closest friends Andy (Drivas) to playing bass and Joey (Barthelette) to play drums. And how did you guys end up on No Sleep? We got in contact through them after doing a split with The Felix Culpa that No Sleep released last year. You guys have been in studios before to record singles and splits, but what was the
enjoying the beer, we’d like to keep making it. So Heretics is not what I expected, but it turned out great. When/how did you come up with the idea for acoustics and different arrangements? Every year we host a two-day festival at various locations around Texas, Dia de los Toadies. On the first night of the festival, we play an intimate, almost acoustic set, and fans really seem to respond to it. So the idea of an album in that style grew from that. Was it tough deciding which songs to include? Not really. Once we started rearranging and deconstructing the songs, it became obvious which ones worked best in this format. I also loved the Blondie cover, partially because it was so unexpected. Why that song instead of another cover? Vaden (Todd Lewis) had been playing this cover as a part of his solo acoustic shows, and the rest of us really liked the arrangement, so it was a natural decision to do it for the album. It’s fun because it’s so unexpected! Will the tour feature you guys playing acoustic with different instrumentation? Yes, our aim is to replicate the album as much as possible, including augmenting our lineup with additional players and occasional guests.
experience like working on a full length for the first time? This experience was a lot different. For the first time in the bands existence we had enough time and inspiration to dial in the most honest songs we’ve arranged yet. We recorded the record with a longtime friend Jay Maas in Haverhill, MA. It’s fairly close to where we live so for our first full length I think because it was so laid back and we were in our environment the whole time as well it felt as genuine as can be. How far back do these songs go? All of the songs were written last year we had a few floating riffs that had been kicking around for a while that ended up sneaking their way in. But for the most part it was all a fresh takes on these songs. Is there a general theme to the songs on the record? I would say there more of a generalized sound than a theme. A handful of songs have some similar topics but no ongoing concepts for this one. What’s next for the band after the record comes out? Keep writing more material. Those are all the questions I have. Anything else you want to talk about? I’m pretty disappointed so far with the newest season of True Detective. I wouldn’t say I dislike it but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt that it’ll turn around. It’s a hard last season to follow.
You mentioned Dia de los Toadies. This is your eighth year putting it on. What’s the toughest thing about hosting your own festival? Have there been years when it didn’t seem worth the hassle? A lot of work goes into hosting this festival every year. From about the time the festival is over, we start planning the following year’s show. There are times when it might become frustrating, but really, by the time the weekend is over, it always seems worth the extra work. Have you started writing new songs for the next studio album? We are definitely in the beginning stages of writing for the next album, but as of now there are no completed songs. Lots of cool ideas in various stages of development. What’s next for the band? In October and November we’ll be on the road promoting Heretics. Then next year, we’ll really concentrate on creating a new album. The plan is to incorporate some elements of the Heretics style into our more familiar loud rock, so it’s really exciting looking forward to that.

Texas Rising (Lionsgate) After countless bizarre alien-based TV shows, The History Channel finally decided to take itself seriously once again with the 10-episode drama Texas Rising. And despite some questionable playing around with facts, the series is solidly entertaining, thanks in large part to a talented cast that includes Ray Liotta, Brendan Frasier and Bill Paxton (playing the central character, Sam Houston). The show focuses on Houston and his fellow Texans as they fight to wrestle their territory away from Mexico in the 1800s. The show follows nicely on the heels of the network’s other fact-based drama Hatfields & McCoys.

Movie Reviews BIG STONE GAP (PG-13)
1/2 Big Stone Gap, Virginia, is a small town where nothing ever happens – except during the six or eight months in 1978-79 when our story takes place. Ave Maria (Ashley Judd) turns 40 and doesn’t mind being “the old maid of Big Stone Gap.” She runs her late, hated father’s drugstore and is serviced regularly by “Yankee” actor Theodore (John Benjamin Hickey), but her real interest is in lifetime friend Jack (Patrick Wilson). You can tell by the way she looks at him. He looks at her the same way, but never at the same time. Ave directs the annual “outdoor extravaganza” and the town’s biggest (true) event occurs: a campaign stop by senator-to-be John Warner and his wife, Elizabeth Taylor. Ave’s mother dies, revealing a secret she would surely have told her daughter sooner. It sets the stage for a ludicrous series of events - including a frivolous lawsuit that would be laughed out of court - that quickly exhaust any good will generated by the movie’s first half. Judd is always good, if not at her best here, and there’s a strong supporting cast, including Jane Krakowski, Jenna Elfman, and Whoopi Goldberg phoning in her usual warmly sarcastic shtick. Director Adriana Trigiani adapted the screenplay from her own novel, which suggests some autobiographical content, but it must have happened more believably in real life. –Steve Warren
THE MARTIAN (PG-13)
1/2 The Martian gave me a night off from being a critic. Instead I was a teenage boy again, putting down Ray Bradbury’s latest book to go to the movies to watch the ultimate Martian chronicle unfold on the big screen. I got that feeling from the first trailer for The Martian and was so psyched for months I was sure I’d be disappointed by the actual movie. I wasn’t. If I could be objective I’d admit it’s not the best picture of the year, but I can’t imagine enjoying another one more. Matt Damon stars as Mark Watney, a botanist who’s stranded on Mars when a storm forces the rest of the crew to evacuate. His vlog tells us what we need to know about how he survives. Some of it goes over our heads but it’s not the gibberish some sci-fi films use as filler to sound authentic. You only have to be a little geeky to appreciate it. Back on Earth, NASA is run by Jeff Daniels, who makes every decision as if he’s consulted a focus group and ignored their unanimous opinion. There are enough voices of reason that some

right things get done, but there are enough setbacks that we can’t be sure of the outcome until the end. I could have done without the oldies – especially disco – soundtrack. David Bowie’s “Starman” is appropriate, as is the song behind the closing credits, but who the hell decided to play “Waterloo” to suggest disaster at a tense moment? No matter – I forgive them; and it’s great to see Ridley Scott, at 77, back in Alien country where he belongs. –Steve Warren
THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION (NR)
Like a lost episode of CNN’s The Sixties, The Black Panthers focuses on an aspect of a bygone decade, providing education, nostalgia or both. Too much of white America, the Black Panther Party was the ISIS of its day, a bunch of terrorists trying to destroy our country. This view was encouraged, if not invented, by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, who created a special counterintelligence force to infiltrate and eliminate the party. There’s irony in the way the Panthers’ taking advantage of the Second Amendment by flaunting weapons in public led conservatives to favor gun control, but less well remembered is their massive program to feed hungry children. Stanley Nelson’s (black) powerful documentary recaps significant news footage and has comments from historians, while providing an inside view from new interviews with former Panthers and opposing views from law enforcement officials of the time. The ending, when the party and its founder, Huey Newton, both go off the rails, will be discouraging to neorevolutionaries. Sadder still is realizing how little has changed in nearly half a century, that the Panthers’ goals - including housing, welfare, nutrition, healthcare and eliminating racism, poverty and police brutality against minorities – have yet to be met. In that sense the Panthers were a cross between Black Lives Matter and Michelle Obama. –Steve Warren
FINDERS KEEPERS (NR)
You could call Finders Keepers a reboot of My Left Foot, if you lean toward that kind of humor. John Wood’s mother says, “It’s a funny story but it’s born of tragedy.” John lost the lower part of his left leg when his father’s small plane crashed near their home in Maiden, North Carolina. His father, who
THE MARTIAN
was piloting, was killed. John wanted to keep the leg to use in a memorial to his dad, and stashed it in a barbecue grill when he put all his belongings in a storage unit. He didn’t pay his rent and the contents of the unit were sold at auction. The grill was bought by Shannon Whisnant, who, craving attention, milked the discovery of the leg for publicity and turned the grill into a tourist attraction, even though the police had confiscated the leg and stored it in the local funeral home. He sold t-shirts with the nickname “The Foot Man.” Wood heard about it and sued to get his leg back. Legally he didn’t have a leg to stand on (that joke’s used twice in the film), but the case, which received international publicity, was resolved by TV’s Judge Mathis. Wood was an addict who alienated his own family, but we don’t see him at his worst so the blowhard Whisnant probably comes across as more villainous than he was. Given the story and their access to everyone involved, the filmmakers couldn’t have failed to make this documentary leg-endary. You might say it makes the Honey Boo Boo crowd look sophisticated, but I doubt it will make you want to wave a Confederate flag. –Steve Warren
MEET THE PATELS (PG)
1/2 If you have friends or associates of Indian descent, Meet the Patels will give you a crash course in their culture. It’s been compared to My Big Fat Greek Wedding but Monsoon Wedding is a more direct ancestor. This is classified as a documentary, a designation that’s becoming as believable as “reality show.” It’s the story of Hollywood actor Ravi V. Patel’s search for love – or at least marriage – to satisfy the demands of his Indian-born parents, whose own marriage was arranged back in the day. They don’t know Ravi, who’s nearly 30, has just broken up with Audrey, a Connecticut redhead, with whom he had his first serious relationship for two years. They want Ravi to uphold tradition by marrying an Indian woman, preferably another Patel, “the biggest family in the world.” Ravi’s sister Geeta, three years older and also unmarried, follows Ravi with a camera during his twoyear quest. (No wonder she doesn’t have time to find a man!) A joke is supposed to excuse her shaky camerawork, periodically relieved by animated segments in storyboard form. If nothing else you’ll learn why there are so many Patels, and that there really is a Patel Matrimonial Convention. A scripted romcom would have been better if you’re looking for typical entertainment; a real documentary would have been more satisfying for purists. This hybrid is a fair compromise that’s hard to love but harder to dislike. –Steve Warren
THE NEW GIRLFRIEND (R)
Here’s one you haven’t seen before. Still
grieving the death of her BFF Laura, who died shortly after giving birth, Claire (Anaïs Demoustier) visits Laura’s widower David (Romain Duris) and finds him in Laura’s clothes. David explains he’s always been into cross-dressing, except while he was married to Laura; and whatever he’s wearing, he’s attracted to women. He asks Claire not to tell anyone, even her husband Gilles (Raphaël Personnaz, a ringer for Supermanera Christopher Reeve); so she invents a new girlfriend, “Virginia,” to explain the time she spends with David in his – er, her new persona. After the initial shock wears off, Claire finds she enjoys going shopping and having an occasional girls’ night out with Virginia, even though it means enabling him – er, her. The story could go in a lot of different directions from here, and it does. Between dreams, fantasies and reality, every possibility is explored, including some you’d never think of. Be prepared to be surprised – repeatedly. Writer-director François Ozon, who’s made some of the best French films of the last two decades, adapted this script from a short story by Ruth Rendell. It’s mostly serious, and when it makes you laugh you’ll have second thoughts about whether that was the appropriate (i.e., PC) reaction. The New Girlfriend is another nail in the coffin of labels for gender identity and sexual orientation. Enjoy watching Claire wrestle with the changes. You may be next. –Steve Warren
SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE (R)
One of the better recent romcoms, Sleeping with Other People is a 21st-century take on When Harry Met Sally, again questioning the proposition, “Men and women can’t be friends.” This time Jake (Jason Sudeikis) meets Lainey (Alison Brie) in college, where they lose their virginity to each other. Over a decade later they run into each other at a sex addicts meeting, where both have gone after being dumped for [see title]. For reasons not entirely clear (except that it worked for Billy and Meg) they decide to be friends without benefits, even though they’re still attracted to each other. Lainey’s also still attracted to Matthew (Adam Scott), her college crush and recent lover, even though he’s married; and Jake’s attracted to his boss, Paula (Amanda Peet). Each faces other distractions too, but they keep coming back to each other. It seems an obvious “when” question, but writer-director Leslye Headland manages to turn it into an “if” question. I won’t spoil the answer. Headland’s dialogue is a lot more original than her premise, running the gamut from sophomoric to intellectual, sexy to romantic, pop cultural to timeless. I used to think of Sudeikis as a lightweight but after Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers and this, I’m starting to take him seriously – in a funny way, of course. –Steve Warren See the rest of our movie reviews at insiteatlanta.com/movies.asp

chainsaws. You have to give the people what they want sometimes but we have to do it in a way that not only satisfies the audience but satisfies us, so we’re always looking for something brand new and a different way to do it. A couple of years ago, we introduced the lasers and people went bananas for that. And the crazy big stuff with people hanging from bungees and people flying over the audience from above. We have a staff of around 300 very talented people so it’s a pretty elaborate operation.
For the uninitiated, please describe the attraction. There’s an upstairs and a downstairs section, The Rotting and Vault 13: Unearthed. Right, we have the two shows. The big show is on the main floor and then we have a basement show which is a little more glory or grittier than the upstairs. Upstairs is basically a haunted mansion and downstairs is maybe more like a modern-day horror movie. The main floor is based on folklore and monsters with special effects and creatures of all kinds. In that area we really don’t go into the slasher element of movies like the “Saw”-type things. It’s clean and fantastical. You can’t just put on a mask and go “Boo!” anymore because the audience is a bit jaded and very sophisticated. Back in the day the film industry was so limited and now it’s perfectly unlimited. And for people like us you’re not just competing with other haunted houses you’re competing with video games, handheld devices and everything else. Kids especially have access to so much and like you said you can’t just go “boo!” anymore. I remember having to sneak into horror movies but now kids are so savvy about horror, it’s like a G-rated movie now. Kids see the stuff every day so to have a monster just coming at them that really won’t cut it. To scare people there’s a bit of an art to it, there’s a bit of a science to it. A lot of it is just putting the pieces together so old-school meets high-tech in a very real way. Right, people are totally desensitized to any sort of shock element these days. Absolutely. But our mantra is always been to scare and to entertain because if you say you’re only planning to scare people that’s just a blanket statement. Ultimately our goal is just to entertain them. We give them a show with that “Wow factor.” Hopefully
they’ll walk out and go, “Oh, that was cool,” and they’ll come back and bring their friends. Haunted houses are definitely a communal activity. It used to be a couple on a date or four friends maybe; now it’s become a whole group of people experiencing this together because it really is a totally communal event. It brings people together, it gives people stories, it gives them memories and laughs and that’s a good thing. It’s such an immersive environment. Once you’re in the door you’re kind of in another world because you don’t see lights you don’t see any behind-the-scenes stuff. You could take a movie camera and shoot a film as you go through it because it’s so seamless. And that’s the fun of it, people come out in big groups from all ages, all walks of life. “Let’s all go, let’s meet there, and Tweet about it while we’re in line.” The audience is totally involved from the minute they arrive. Netherworld opens at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 7 pm weekdays through October. Visit www.fearworld.com for tickets and more information.

SNORKELING THE GALAPAGOS
Species You Won’t See Anywhere Else
BY BRET LOVE
T
HE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS ARE best known for the distinctive wildlife found on their shores, and the impact animals such as the Galapagos Tortoise and Galapagos Finches had on Darwin’s theory of evolution. Significantly less discussed are the remarkable wonders to be found in the surrounding waters. The Galapagos Islands are blessed with extraordinary marine biodiversity thanks to their location on the Equator, 560 miles west of Ecuador. Nutrient-rich water runs off from the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, travels east across the Pacific Ocean (known as the Cromwell current), and is churned up by the warm California current from the north and the cooling Peru (or Humbodlt) current from the south. The upwelling of deep water to the surface caused by this collision brings nutrients that stimulate the growth of algae, or phytoplankton, which are the base of the ocean’s food chain. When they flourish, so does the marine life. And since many of the volcanic islands do not offer enough nutrients on land, some of the Galapagos’ most intriguing species have adapted to live off the bounty of the sea. Here are four favorites you’re likely to see while Snorkeling the Galapagos:
FLIGHTLESS CORMORANTS
The Flightless Cormorant is among the most rare bird species in the world, with around 900 individuals living on the Galapagos Islands. It’s an odd bird, with black and brown feathers, turquoise eyes, low growling voices, and wings about 1/3 the size that would be required in order for the bird to fly. Their feathers aren’t waterproof, so they spend a lot of time drying their short, stubby appendages in the sun. But while they may not be able to fly, in the water they’re like feathered rockets, using their webbed feet and powerful legs to dive down to the bottom of the ocean in search of fish, eels and other small prey. Their mating dance is an elegant aquatic waltz, with the male and female shaking their heads dramatically while circling one another as other suitors try to cut in. Later they build a seaweed nest above the hightide mark, with the male bringing his lady friend gifts of flotsam from the ocean. She’ll lay 3 eggs, with only one likely to survive, and they share parenting responsibilities until the chick leaves the nest.
GALAPAGOS PENGUINS
The Galapagos may be the only place in the world where you can snorkel with penguins, and the Galapagos Penguin is the only penguin that lives north of the equator. They’re
also extremely rare and endangered, with less than 1,000 breeding pairs left. Found primarily on the islands of Fernandina and Isabela, the tiny Galapagos Penguin measures just 19 inches long and weighs around five pounds, making them the second smallest penguin species in the world. Scientists have surmised that their Antarctic ancestors got caught in the Humboldt Current and wound up in the Galapagos, where they genetically adapted to the heat (which ranges from 59º-82ºF). They cool themselves off via thermoregulation, stretching out their flippers, hunching forward to keep the sun from shining on their feet, and panting to cool themselves.
GALAPAGOS SEA LIONS
These sea lions are on the endangered species list, but they’re ubiquitous in the Galapagos. You can find them almost everywhere– in public parks, on the San Cristobal docks, and on every beach of every island. Distinguishable from fur seals by their earflaps, Galapagos Sea Lions seem awkward and clumsy on land, with a lurching side-to-side gait, loud barks and an array of odd bodily noises. But once they reach the water, they transform into something magical, like elegant ballet dancers of the oceanic world. They also prove eminently playful and curious, swimming fast as lightning. With their huge eyes, cute faces and funny flippers, the sea lions’ charms prove impossible to resist. Española island’s beautiful Gardner Bay is a special place to wind down a Galapagos adventure. Here, on a white sandy beach, hundreds of sea lions live in large colonies. Pups nurse from their mothers, juveniles frolic in the cerulean blue surf, and male bulls battle for dominance over their harems.
MARINE IGUANAS
Marine iguanas look like little miniature Godzillas, hissing and sneezing (in order to expel excess salt from their nasal glands) and tending to clutter en masse like kittens. Marine Iguanas can be found almost everywhere in the Galapagos, but they love congregating on the lava-strewn shores, where they can rapidly absorb heat from the sun to warm their bodies after a swim. They vary greatly from island to island in terms of size and color, from the teal green-tinged adult males on Española to the brick red colors of the subspecies on Fernandina. On land they appear graceless and clumsy, but their flattened tails and spiky dorsal fins make them a wonder to behold in the water. It’s bizarre to see this a 4-foot long prehistoric-looking lizard diving for algae then shimmying their bodies to swim to the surface for air.

We’d been searching for this thing and all of a sudden the songs all seemed to sort of have a genre and we finally knew what it was: the twelve-string, jangly powerpop stuff.
How have you changed since your first album, from way back in the stone-age of 2006? Sean: It was just the three of us, and Dom and I were 13. It was the definitive first record in that we made all the mistakes and got everything wrong. And our second record when I listen back to it now the songs seem pretty juvenile but we were like 16 or so. Even though you weren’t old enough to be a band in the 80’s, you’re definitely one of the best ‘80s bands I’ve ever seen. Sean: That’s the greatest compliment in the world! That’s all we want to be. MR. PRICE IS RIGHT
Rock ‘n’ Roll and R&B Legend Lloyd Price Addresses Racism in Intense new Book
BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH
I
N 1952, ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF Famer Lloyd Price changed the perception of music and social interaction when he wrote and recorded “Lawdy Miss Clawdy.” The highly influential record inspired a generation and its impact has led to an undeniably impressive legacy. After 30 other hits, in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, the busy 82 year old entrepreneur continues to tour, write and plan new business ventures. This month his newest project hits the shelves of bookstores and the bins of Amazon in a wide new release. Sumdumhonky is a chillingly candid memoir about his experiences with racism in America and Africa. Sumdumhonky is a very powerful book. Well, it’s from life experiences. It seems to be catching on because I think people really seem to feel it. The whole idea was to tell the story of living in this country with all the opposition over the years and then growing up in a time when it was really rough for an African-American. But it’s not intended to alienate, it’s intended to educate about the political situation of the times. It’s a very painful book to read but the story is very liberating. Yes, it is. Because the truth is the truth and all you’ve got to do is tell it. But you’ve gotta live it in order to really express it. The title instantly grabs you. Well that was on purpose. Everybody in PG 22 • October 2015 • insiteatlanta.com
politics or anything else has their opinion so in order to get people’s attention you really have to grab them from the very start. And as for the subject, I found that not only just here in this country but everywhere people are confused about black people from America. Even in Africa they never called me an AfricanAmerican they called me the Black American.
It’s really the perfect time for this book. I think so because man you can see the world over people are just trying to find their way. And the only two people who really know each other are the black man and the white man. We’ve been here 400 years together under one nation, so if we don’t know each other don’t nobody know each other! You mentioned traveling the world to do your show, and there’s an intense passage in the book that details the
early ‘60s era when you were having massive hit records, yet you were still facing blatant racism and inequality. Without question. But I was able to dance around it. I was from the South so it wasn’t that difficult to understand because I’d seen it. I had hit after hit and it never got any better. For example there’s a big hotel in my hometown, The Roosevelt Hotel. In 1963, I was playing there but I still had to go through the kitchen to go in and do the job. It was just ridiculous. But it was not just there it was in Los Angeles and New York - you always got that same feeling. And you’ve got to remember that segregation was not just among blacks and whites it was among black people too. Do you think it will ever go away completely? I think it’s coming. I’ve seen a huge improvement since I was a kid. We got a black President and who would’ve ever thought that! It was young people and the youth movement that made that happen. Just like at the beginning of rock-and-roll kids started to dance and skate together. Just kids having fun and that’s how it starts.
One good thing about social upheaval is good music usually comes from the chaos. Well that’s absolutely correct. Rosa Parks would’ve never ever been able to sit on that bus if four years before she did that “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” hadn’t started the youth movement from New Orleans. I bear witness that in 1963 Martin Luther King marched in Washington but that music had started to bring people together ten years before that. It was the New Orleans sound that started this movement not just in this country but around the world. Everybody understood this music and then came James Brown and Ray Charles and Elvis Presley. By that time I’d been on the charts for two years with five records. How does it make you feel that a song you wrote and recorded in 1952 has transcended genres and inspired so many? Well, I just see myself as a messenger. As of today, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” has been recorded 178 times, by some of the biggest rock stars in the world. I’ve written 30 songs that have been in the top 100. It wasn’t a black or white thing when the kids came to dance it was just kids. So I saw it as a party where folks could get to know each other. I really didn’t see it as a big deal. To me it was something just as natural as trees growing.
