DRAGON CON PARADE

Every year several hundred costumed Dragon Con members gather in the early Saturday morning hours, ready to take center stage on Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta for the largest event at Dragon Con - the annual costume parade. Thousands more line the parade route to participate in the fun and to cheer on their favorites. The parade starts promptly at 10:00 am and the route follows Peachtree Street from Woodruff Park (at Auburn Avenue) to the Hyatt, then continues down Baker Street and concludes at the Marriott.Go to dragoncon.org for more details.

Sept. 15: Georgia Dome

FALCONS HOST RAMS

The meaningless preseason games are over, and the Falcons can finally set if they’re Super Bowl material. The St. Louis Rams vist the Georgia Dome Sept. 15 at 1pm for the Falcons home opener. The Rams weren’t a great team in 2012, but they have certainly made strides under head coach Jeff Fisher to be a compelling team in the NFC West. Piedmont Park becomes center stage for the biggest music festival in the city on Sept. 20-21. Entering its third-consecutive year since returning to Atlanta, Music Midtown features some of the brightest star in music as well as a mix of legendary acts. Red Hot Chili Peppers headline the show with Journey, Queens of the Stone Age, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Imagine Dragons, Weezer, Jane’s Addiction, 2 Chainz, Phoenix, Cake, Tegan and Sarah and many more. There was a time, long ago, when John Mayer was working the door at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. Those days are long past, as the rock superstar returns to Atlanta for a show at Aaron’s Amphitheatre. The Grammy winning artist is known for hits like “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” “Waiting on the World to Change” and “Why Georgia.” Tickets start at $46.50 for lawn. The postseason is almost upon us, and the Braves are in prime position to make a run at a penanet. Get in one last trip to Turner Field on the final day of the regular season on Sept. 29. The Braves will host the Phillies for a three-game set. The National Leauge East is already wrapped up, but don’t expect Atlanta to stroll into the postseason. After the single-game elimination a year ago, this team will want to carry momentum into the playoffs. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35pm. Oct. 5: Georgia Dome

Come celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Atlanta Football Classic on Oct. 5. Tickets start at $10 at the Georgia Dome. The Atlanta Football Classic is one of the nation’s largest Black college football games pitting North Carolina A&T University Aggies against South Carolina State University Bulldogs on the gridiron. African Children’s Choir Brings Its Message of Joy & Hope to Atlanta BY BRET LOVE

HOUGH YOU MIGHT NOT HEAR much about it on the nightly news, much of the African continent is in turmoil, and has been for quite some time. Few nations have endured more tragedy than Uganda, which suffered at the tyrannical hands of Idi Amin back in the 1970s, and endured a civil war with Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army from the mid-‘80s until a few years ago. Thousands were murdered, millions were displaced, and many children were either orphaned or forced to become soldiers along the way. It was into this war-torn Uganda that Canadian Ray Barnett first ventured on a humanitarian mission in 1984. When he stopped to give a young boy a ride from his destroyed village to a safer one, the lad began singing en route. His uplifting song gave Barnett the idea to start the African Children’s Choir, which (under the umbrella of parent organization, Music For Life Institute) gives impoverished African kids ages 7 to 12 a chance to get an education and, ultimately, give back to their community. Nearly 30 years later, the choir has launched 40 North American tours, released several albums, performed everywhere from London’s Royal Albert Hall to American Idol, and worked with icons ranging from Sir Paul McCartney and Mariah Carey to Josh Groban. More importantly, it has helped thousands of kids from troubled countries like Uganda,

Rwanda and Sudan to live healthy, happy productive lives. One of those children, Dororthy Nabwami (who toured with the choir in 1997), is now a 27-year-old who will be chaperoning the ACC for their performances in Atlanta. Nabwami was gracious enough to answer a few questions about her native Uganda, how the choir changed her life, and why she put her career in social work on hold to be a chaperone.

Can you start off by telling me a little about your childhood, including where you grew up in Uganda and what your childhood there was like before you joined the African Children’s Choir? I am the youngest of 10 children. We all grew up in a small two-room house in a district called Luwero, where the civil war of Idi Amin took place. My father left my mum when I was five years old, so my mum had to look for food to feed the whole family. I was not able to go to school sometimes, because my mum did not have the money to take me. When I was 9 years old, Music For Life came to our local church where I was attending. I was so lucky to be among those children who were selected to join the 12th African Children’s Choir. There and then, I knew I would never go hungry again, and that my education was going to be looked after by the choir. Joseph Kony has obviously been in the

Can you talk about the impact the Lord’s Resistance Army has had on Uganda, and specifically on your life and that of some of the kids currently in the choir? The LRA’s impact is more on the people from the northern part of Uganda where the war is. Most of the children from that region have lost their parents. Some children have been forced to become child soldiers. The children I am traveling with are all from the central part of Uganda, so they have not been affected by that war themselves. But, in previous choirs, we had children from the northern part who lost both or one of their parents because of the war.

What can you tell me about the Music For Life Institute, and specifically its initiatives in Uganda? The Makerere Choir Training Academy is where the choirs train before they come on the road to start touring. It provides shelter for the children while they are in training. The African Children’s Choir Primary School is where the children who have been on the road go for their primary school. It’s a boarding school, with very nice teachers and caretakers who look after the children. Music for Life Centers are in many of the local schools. Through this, children are fed, taught about the Bible, taught music and dance, and provided with scholastic materials.

Choir Boy kicks off the 10th Anniversary season of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. It is written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, winner in 2008 for his play In The Red and Brown Water. Choir Boy is a stunning new play with moving gospel music. It tells the story of Pharus, a young gay man struggling through his final year of high school at a prestigious boarding school for African American men. He is the target of bullying and teasing from his peers, but also earns the admiration and respect of fellow members of the school’s celebrated choir. Gospel music is a tradition as old as the school itself, and that tradition is embodied in its vaunted choir. Pharus’s confidence, charisma, clarity of purpose, and talent hide the struggle he endures at school. The choir is where Pharus can stand out and be different without fear – because he’s the best. Choir Boy is co-produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York, where it opened earlier this month to outstanding reviews.

A unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, Stomp has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression. Both household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum. Synchronized stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra, eight Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. Stomp uses everything but conventional percussion instruments - dustbins, tea chests, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated. It is safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way. Over the years Stomp has continued to change by creating new material which is evident in this show.

ROM ITS BEGINNINGS AS A street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past 20 years, having performed in more than 50 countries and in front of more than 24 million people. Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas in 1991, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with four global productions: the ongoing sell-out production at New York’s Orpheum Theatre, a permanent London company, and North American and European tours. We recently had the chance to speak with John Angeles, one of STOMP’s veteran performers. Throughout college and thereafter, John has performed with various percussion groups, bands, and has toured the world doing performances and clinics. He first joined the cast of STOMP six years ago as part of their touring company and has spent the last two years performing the show in New York City. We asked John to tell us about some of the new additions to the show and why it remains so popular after all these years.

Who does comes up with all the amazing routines that you perform? The two original creators of the show, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas are the ones that come up with everything. But there is room for improv. They say it’s about 75% written and 25% improv. Anytime someone is doing a solo, they get to write that themselves. You are allowed to have so much creativity in what you do and the freedom of movement. They want you to move naturally, how you would normally move. What’s your favorite performance in the show? There is a piece in the show called “Suspension” and that’s when I’m hanging on the wall and we’re swinging hitting these pots and pans and buckets. As a drummer, that’s my favorite thing to do. I don’t have to look at the audience; I don’t have to be nervous. We’re just swinging on the wall and just playing. I don’t have to worry about anything. I’m sitting in my harness. I just sit there and play.

How did you get involved with STOMP? What is your background? My background is drumming. Everyone’s background is something different. I have been playing the drums for 23 years. Angela Bassett & Kathy Bates On American Horror Story’s 3rd Season BY ALEX S. MORRISON

N CASE YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED, FX has risen in recent years to rival AMC among cable’s hottest networks. From the retro-futuristic animated comedy Archer and ‘80s-set spy saga The Americans to gritty motorcycle gang drama Sons of Anarchy, their original series have developed fan bases just as rabid as those for Mad Men and The Walking Dead. But American Horror Story, which was created by Executive Producer Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, Glee), may just be the network’s most original show to date. Tapping into TV’s current obsession with horror and serial killers (see: Dexter, Hannibal, The Killing), American Horror Story is unique because the story, the setting, and even the cast changes from season to season (although the legendary Jessica Lange has been a singular constant presence). The show’s third season switches between modern times and 1830s New Orleans, with big screen icons Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates joining the cast as notorious voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau and serial killer Madame LaLaurie, respectively. The story follows a coven witches that relocated to NOLA from Salem, Massachusetts just before the famous witch trials, and is sure to feature plenty of the psychological terror, supernatural horror, and edge-of-your-seat suspense for which the show is known. Bassett and Bates discuss what convinced them to return to TV, what attracted them to their characters, and what it’s like to work on a critically acclaimed show with so much major star power.

How influential was Jessica Lange’s run with this series on your decision to join the cast? ANGELA BASSETT: It was a tremendous influence for me. I’m a big fan of her work. She’s incredible. Watching the first two seasons– the work of all the actors, in addition to Jessica– you could tell it was just an actor’s dream. KATHY BATES: Same here. Seeing Sarah Paulson’s work last season, you just get like a little kid. You just want to play, too.

What can each of you tell us about your characters this season? BASSETT: Well, I play Marie Laveau. It’s been interesting, being in New Orleans, because there’s such a regard and respect for who she was. She lived to be about 80 years old, and she was a very influential person in the city. My character is based loosely on her. BATES: My Southern accent has come roaring back. Now that that cat is out of the bag, one of the things I enjoyed reading about Madame LaLaurie is that my great-greatgrandfather came from Dublin to New Orleans in the 1830s, and he became the personal physician to Andrew Jackson. I read in the book on LaLaurie that his plantation was right next door to theirs. So I was very curious to know whether my grandfather ever met her, because I think he would have been there just before she left. I thought that was interesting. Angela, did you do any research into Marie Laveau’s life? How close is this incarnation to the real woman?

BASSETT: I read a fictional novel by Tallant, called The Voodoo Queen. I’ve read two books about her- one that’s more historical and one that’s [a fictionalized version of] her life, but put into novel form. It’s just very interesting. We’ve been filming in the French Quarter. But I don’t know exactly where [the story] is going, so I’m remaining open and just picking up little things. Her father was French Creole, and he gave her gold earrings. Spain occupied Louisiana longer than the French did. I’m also talking to folks from there and just getting a take on how they see her, or what they feel about her, to get a sense of who she was and her power in the 1800s, as this black Creole woman. Kathy, your last TV series experience, with Harry’s Law, had its ups and downs. What did it take to make you want to do a series again? BATES: I don’t want to give [NBC] any airtime. They kicked us to the curb and they’re getting what they deserve. On a positive note, I went out for a drink with my friend, Jessica Lange, after seeing the first season of American Horror Story. I said, “You’ve got to get me on that show” but I thought it would be maybe for a couple of episodes. Angela, what convinced you to return to TV again? Was it just this show and this role in particular, or were you actively looking? BASSETT: This was just perfect. I got a call to come in and meet Ryan. I watched every single episode. But, to hear him talk about it, knowing who would be joining the cast, and

knowing that it would be shot in New Orleans, which is one of my favorite cities– for the music, the food, the character and their love of death… People from different strata live within 10 to 15 minutes of each other, so it’s just very unique. There is such a history in that town, with free people of color, slaves, whites and Haitians. How is it to be able to work with such a group of people, at this level of talent? BATES: It really raises your game. It’s something almost unconscious. When you get out there [on set], you know who you’re going to be with, even if you’re not in the same scene with somebody, and you just want to bring your triple-A game and work at the highest level that you can. You want to push yourself. We have a wonderful director, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon who’s got such an amazing eye. He likes high, wide shots. He really has that artist’s eye to create a painting. I can’t wait to see it!

HE FIRST TIME WE MET CHARLIE Hunnam in 2002, he was a fresh-faced 22-year-old making his Hollywood film debut opposite Katie Holmes in the mediocre thriller Abandon. There was nothing about his performance in that film (or in period films like Nicholas Nickleby and Cold Mountain) to suggest the sort of alpha male tour-de-force the Newcastle native ultimately delivered in his role as Jax Teller on the FX motorcycle drama Sons Of Anarchy. When the hit series returns on September 10th, Jax continues to balance the muscular brutality of his position as President of the SAMCRO motorcycle gang with his desire to be a loving husband and father. But, in a world where seemingly everyone is against him– from law enforcement and rival gangs to SAMCRO’s Irish affiliations and even his own family– the odds on Jax avoiding karmic retribution for his crimes seem slim at best.

Hunnam and creator/executive producer/ writer Kurt Sutter recently gave a press conference at the TCA Press Tour to talk about the moral turning point represented by the show’s sixth season, whether season 7 will truly be its last, and how Sons Of Anarchy turned their respective careers around. WARNING: Major spoilers ahead!!!

The implication seems pretty clear, in the premiere episode, that SAMCRO sold the gun that’s used in the school shooting. How much of an impact will that have on this season? KURT SUTTER: I’ve wanted to do that story for three years. Thematically, it’s the right fit, because we have a lead character whose a father trying to figure out if he can raise his sons and avoid this kind of violence. That will continue to play out. There’s a lot of blood and guts in my show. It’s a signature of the show, but nothing is done gratuitously. The events that happen in the premiere are really the catalyst for the third act of this morality play that we’re doing. Have we reached a moral turning point in the show, where it’s clear that you can’t run a porn business and a gun-running business without there being consequences? SUTTER: Absolutely! I think it’s really the conflict that has fueled the entire series, and especially Jax. “Can I really follow this path, and still be a caring husband, and a good and loving father? Can I have all that and still be the leader of a criminal enterprise?” I think we’re on that trajectory, going into Season 6, where we have to

decide if the answer is yes or no.

How mapped out is this season, episode by episode? Are you certain that the end of Season 7 is the end the show? SUTTER: I have a loose structure that I go into every season with for the big mile markers. I have a sense of where I want to begin and end, and I have a great team of writers. Chris Collins runs my room, and has done an extraordinary job of hanging the meat on all those skeletons I come in with. What I’ve learned over time is that the looser I hold onto those ideas, the better the seasons are. That’s why I don’t like to get too far ahead, in terms of production and writing. My sense is that I’ll come into the final season with a sense of where I want it to end. If at some point I go to the studio and say, “I need three more episodes to close out the series,” I’m sure they’ll figure out a way to do it. Clearly, I’m having trouble fitting it in each episode right now, as you’ll see this season. Every episode continues to be super-sized– mostly either 15 minutes or a half-hour longer. As our characters get developed, our stories get thicker and our relationships get more complicated, these episodes just take longer and longer to unfold. Do you know what the final shot of the series is going to be? SUTTER: I have a sense of what it is, but I hold onto it loosely. I need that marker to go towards, and then I’ll be led to the right place. Charlie, what’s it like to play a character with

such conflicted emotions? HUNNAM: It’s a dream come true to be given a character like this. Kurt’s script came along and it just blew me away. I grew up in an area where, if a man wanted to escape the workingclass struggle of making just enough money and being slammed by the man all the time, they had to go out and take some risks. There were always consequences, but it didn’t make them bad men. My father took a lot of risks in his life and paid the consequences, and it corrupted the relationship he had with his family. So these were dynamics that I understood, and I felt really excited about having the opportunity to understand them more deeply through playing them myself. SUTTER: I was doing an awful draft of one of the Punisher movies, and the woman who had directed Green Street Hooligans was directing it. It was during the draft phase of Sons, and I watched Green Street because of the director. I saw Charlie in that, and I immediately wanted Charlie for Jax. I didn’t know who he was, or if he was available. He was living in Los Angeles, but he came in and nailed the role. It was just one of those things where I feel like there was a certain amount of fate and destiny with this connection. We’ve really created this character together, to a large degree. I’ve not had that experience with any other actor, other than my wife (Katey Sagal), with Gemma. So it’s been this really great journey for both of us. because we were both taking this risk, not knowing if anything was going to work, and going, “All right, let’s fucking see what happens.”

NE OF THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE of the modern wave of supermodels, Heidi Klum has graced the cover of every major magazine and her forays into business, fashion, and acting have gained her a legion of fans. As an ultra-successful model, the Germanborn beauty is perhaps best known for her Sports Illustrated appearances and various high-profile photo shoots across the world. As an international television host, Klum is usually seen in glitzy settings, most recently as the star of the fashion reality tutorial series Project Runway and guesting amid the talent cavalcade of hopefuls on NBC’s popular showcase America’s Got Talent. Klum sat down with INsite to speak about her role on America’s Got Talent, her specific views of fashion and image and how it all works together to form her own personal style. Every week you look fabulous on the show. How do you manage to make it seem so effortless and natural? I always try to change up my look. I have a fantastic stylist and I am definitely someone who plans ahead. I plan my outfits and I do long days of fittings. Once I have the outfit, then I work with my hair and makeup team. So it’s really about having a great team. They make it all work for me, because I surely do not walk in the door looking like this when I come in the morning. As a newcomer to the show, what did you expect going into it, and can you describe your first episode and how you felt? It was better than expected. Being there for the first time you just really see how grueling it is for the talent. There are thousands of people that line up outside and they wait all day. At the end, there’s only a certain amount of talent that then actually gets viewed by the audience at home. It is really so hard for these contestants who want to be on America’s Got Talent to actually be seen on TV. We saw sometimes up to 40, 45 acts in one day, and most of them will get cut out. Are there any particular acts that you’re keeping mental track of for another chance that have already been eliminated? Well, of the 12 acts every week, I do definitely have my favorites. Entertainment is entertainment and it’s good, as long as it keeps my attention. It can be as diverse as watching a ballet dancer, or watching somebody with a bunch of TVs on stage making mad, crazy patterns. It all really depends - is it entertaining? That is my #1 thing. How have your experiences as a supermodel and judging talent on Project Runway helped you become a great judge for America’s Got Talent? I feel like that life has prepared me to judge, from just traveling around the world for the last 20 years, being in the entertainment business and seeing amazing stars perform. You get to see who’s kinda the real deal and who is not. Some will just do things that blow you away, and then there are others that don’t. For me, it’s not so much that I’ve learned from Project Runway or from Germany’s Next Top Model, because it’s very different. This is more about singing and circus acts and juggling and danger acts, so more in the sense that these are acts that I’ve seen along my travels going to theater performances and whatnot all over the world. It’s hard to say because the show here, it’s a variety show, so it’s not like it specifically [focuses] on just singing or just dancing or just like a circus act. What is so different about this show is that it is variety. When I do Top Model, it’s about models and about photo shoots and how they walk on the runway, so it’s different. You just can’t compare. Speaking of variety, there are so many varied acts in the running this year, including some comedians. What do you think it’ll take for one of the comedy acts to stand out from all the big, flashy acts and possibly win the whole thing? They just have to make us laugh. But you know, there’s always an audience for someone. Like sometimes you sit there at Radio City Music Hall and the people are just laughing and they think it’s hysterical, and I try, and I just can’t laugh. So what is funny to you is not necessarily funny to me, and you just have to be true to what you think is funny. And then you judge. Is it hard to be critical of an act you’re not familiar with? It gets hard when they’re all equally good, to say this person is better than that person, that for me is the hardest to judge. But you kind of see the differences. You’re like, they have it. They make my hair stand up. They give me chills. They’re that amazing. They keep me on the edge of my seat. I want to see more. Then it’s easy to say yes, you’re it. So I think it’s good. I think it’s great for everyone to have that opportunity to be seen by millions of people, and ultimately, America will vote who they think is the best out of all these people.

Do you have any sort of parting advice for the participants, as far as their future plans and long-term goals? You just have to keep working. It’s up to you at the end of the day. You make your own destiny. Ultimately it’s definitely up to you to keep it all going and continue to put yourself out there, be professional and just do it. The Legendary Founder of the Allman Brothers Stays True to His Southern-Rock Roots BY LEE VALENTINE SMITH

ELEBRATING THE 40TH anniversary of the Allman Brothers’ landmark album Brothers And Sisters, Gregg Allman and his extended family band are on the road again this summer. The busy, 65-year-old musician has a full plate these days. The paperback edition of his recent autobiography My Cross To Bear hit the stands earlier this year, and the popular book is currently in pre-production as a theatrical film. Insite caught up with Allman at his home near Savannah as he prepared for a series of summer performances with the Allman Brothers and a major solo tour, currently scheduled for early Fall. He was, as expected, good-humored, easy-going and eager to talk about his healthy lifestyle. You’ve been a Georgia resident for a long time now. Yeah, I’ve been here since ’99.

At what point in the show does it go away? After about four bars of music. Since this is the anniversary of Brothers And Sisters, will the summer shows feature most of the tracks from that album? Oh yeah, we’ll be playing all of ‘em. Did you work on the recent reissue project? It was something [the record label] wanted to do, so I looked at the mix and all. We went back and remastered it. What did you learn about the album in the process? It was very nostalgic and heartwarming because I heard [engineer-producer] Tom Dowd’s voice a lot. That was very nice.

Gregg Allman? I haven’t the foggiest, man. Whoever can do it right. They’ll have to be able to sing and play, because we won’t have no lip-syncing. How do you feel about your life coming to the screen? Scared to death! (laughs) Well, how would you feel if your life was there, and somebody else was gonna portray it, and show the whole world how you’ve lived your life? Wouldn’t you be a little edgy about that? I want ‘em to walk out of the theater, goin’ ‘That was a bad motherfucker, or a righteous dude, a kind dude, a talented dude.’ I don’t want ‘em walkiin’ out, thinkin’ I’m some kinda dork, you know? So it’s a lot of mixed emotions. Were you surprised they wanted to make a film of the book? Obviously it was a pretty successful publication. I was surprised they wanted to make a damn book out of it! So I’m really surprised about all of this stuff. At one time, I was thinking it was going a little too fast for me, but I’m in as executive producer, so I have full rights to x anything. It was the only way I could do it, really. Will you be there for the casting sessions? I was supposed to be, but I’ve been called away this week. I’ve got to go to the Mayo and get my liver checked. How’s everything going with that? So far, so good. It’s perfect. My cholesterol is perfect, and all my numbers are good. They’re really thorough there. I had cancer and they wanted to make sure it didn’t spread. So I have to go for these MRIs and CAT Scans all the time. How do you stay healthy on tour? As we both know, the road offers a lot of temptations for an unhealthy lifestyle. Life has become so precious to me, man. I’m very careful about anything that I consume, which is very difficult on the road. You find yourself going a little hungry every now

and then. But it’s better than that processed bullshit. I take my own Vitamix on the road and sometimes you just have to drink your dinner. It’s the only way I can consume things like beets. They are so good for you but I tell ya, I can’t get ‘em past my back teeth. But you can disguise them, you can throw a bunch of bananas in there and make a big ol’ smoothie. I got this thing, it was a gift from a fan, it’s about a five hundred dollar affair called The Vitamix. It’s like an industrial strength mixer. I mean, this sumbitch will grind up a Coke bottle! You can put anything in there. Any damn thing. You throw some food in there, disguise it and slug it down, man. God, it makes you feel so good. Do you drink that just before the show, or earlier? I eat a big breakfast, not much throughout the day and then after we play I eat a substantial meal. But I try not to overeat. We’ve gotten our riders down to a science. We have it where they deliver so much fresh fruit, so much fresh vegetables, for the Vitamix thing, in case all that’s left is Toxic Hell, I mean, Taco Bell or McDonald’s. They need to put a law on that shit and just destroy it. People would live a lot longer if they did. Whew, and the kids! The fat kids. It’s ridiculous. Somebody, somewhere, somehow needs to get a fucking clue. You could lead that charge. People would listen to you. (Laughs) Man, I got fish to fry! I got musical things to do, I can’t be politicking. What goes through your mind at an Atlanta show? Is there a different mindset when it comes to the Georgia fans? I always think of back in the Piedmont Park days. We didn’t make any money, but we had so much fun and learned so much. It was such an experience. Atlanta people have always been such a gracious crowd, just good ol’ Southern people.

A SOARING SUCCESS

Talking comedy at 30,000 feet with Paula Patton and the cast of Baggage Claim BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

ILEY CYRUS CAN’T EVEN get Paula Patton off the high she’s currently on. Though the tonguewaggin’ 20-year-old was grindin’ all up and down on Paula’s husband, R&B titan Robin Thicke, during the MTV Video Music Awards last month, Patton is in such a good space right now that Cyrus’ antics would have to be twice as raunchy to get her attention. Paula’s on the eve of her first true leading role as Montana Moore, the hopelessly romantic leading lady in Baggage Claim (Sept. 27), a film based on director David E. Talbert’s best-selling 2003 book of the same name. And while the romantic comedy centering around the airline industry doesn’t venture into any new cinematic territory, the flick is undeniably cute. We recently had a chance to sit down with Patton and the colorful cast —Taye Diggs, Derek Luke and Jill Scott, oh my— to talk about everything from finding work to finding love. Thankfully though, “twerking” never comes up in the conversation. Tell me about bringing this project to the screen. David E. Talbert: Well, I’ve been in love with a beautiful woman for 15 years. I don’t just write from fantasy. Fortunately, it’s been a reality and that’s a beautiful thing. I wrote the book in 2003. Zola Mashariki is a senior exec over the project over at [Fox] Searchlight. She was at the first book signing and she said,

LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER (PG-13)

 As if it weren’t dramatic enough, the history of the U.S. civil rights movement is given a dramatic context to put it on a relatable, personal level. The fictional story is based on a true one about a man who served as a White House butler under seven presidents, from Eisenhower through Reagan. Forest Whitaker is predictably perfect as Cecil Gaines, but Oprah Winfrey is a surprising revelation in the more complex role of his wife. While Cecil, who picked cotton as a boy, maintains a conservative, apolitical exterior, his older son (David Oyelowo) becomes a Freedom Rider and later a Black Panther. A parade of star cameos is an amiable distraction. If this is the only way to bring history to the masses, be grateful Lee Daniels has done it as well as he has. –Steve Warren

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES (PG-13)

 You might be fooled by a cast that includes Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Jared Harris (Mad Men) and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (The Tudors) into thinking this an arty, more adult-friendly take on the teen-oriented supernatural thriller. Instead, it’s like the worst elements of Harry Potter, Twilight and Percy Jackson all mashed up in a blender of bad. The story centers on Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a rebellious teen who learns, after her mother (Headey) disappears, that she descends from a long line of warriors who protect our world from demons. She joins forces with a small group of similarly comely super-teens to do battle in an “alternate” New York City called Downworld, and the plot only gets more presposterous from there. The script is laughably bad, the story borrows liberally from other fantasy touchstones, and even the

“David Talbert, I like this book. We gotta make it into a movie.” That was in 2003. Then, I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Patton. She came when I finished shooting First Sunday. She said she wanted to do [Baggage Claim]. She said she was coming to the office. Everybody in the office was like, “Oh my God! Paula Patton is coming to the office.” The dudes, the girls, everybody wanted to see Paula Patton. She came and she was so bubbly. And I said, “This is Montana Moore.” That was ’08. That’s how long these things take. But when Paula said she wanted to do it, that’s when everybody [got on board]. She was the magnet. [Actors were saying,] “Sign me up!” Montana Moore is my favorite character I’ve ever created. She’s a mix of Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts all mixed into one. I thank God that we were able to [do this movie].

Paula, had you read the book? Patton: I read the screenplay when I was making this film called Just Wright with Queen Latifah. I brought my husband and my best friend in and we read it. We all laughed out loud. I knew I wanted it. It’s a rare thing for a black woman to be the lead in a romantic comedy. And I just love, love romantic comedies. But the movie went away. I had a son and did these other films and then they called me and said, “Baggage Claim is back. They’re gonna make it and David wants you.” I was so thrilled. This has been a labor of love, a complete passion project. I’m just happy to be a part of it. David created that world. I always

And Derek, this is one of your first comedic roles, right? Talbert: Derek has never smiled in a movie before. This is the first movie he has smiled in in his career. Don’t you love Derek Luke’s smile? I told him, “When you smile, it lights up the world.” They’re gonna put it in your contract now that you have to have at least 10 smiles [per movie]. Affion Crockett (plays a TSA operator in the film): He was so mad in Antwone Fisher. [In Fisher’s voice] I’m still here! Derek Luke: First of all, I was sent a different role, one of the other guys. When I read William’s [lines], I just connected ‘cuz I felt his whole thing about commitment. I didn’t really understand it, but as a married man, that’s one of the things that binds you together is commitment. I loved, when I read the script, that William got to kiss Montana. Patton: It’s called “legal cheating.” Luke: Legal cheating…. But I loved what David’s nephew said when I was visiting David in the editing room. And you asked your nephew—what was the question? Talbert: I asked him which one of the guys [in the movie] is your favorite. He said William. And I said, “But he’s this 21-year-old guy. Why William?” [His nephew responded] “Oh, he’s most like me.” Luke: I think I related to William because

 Danai Gurira will always be Michonne to Walking Dead fans, but Mother of George proves she’s no one-sword pony. As Adenike, she’s brought over from Nigeria to marry Ayodale (Isaach De Bankolé) in a traditional African wedding in Brooklyn. When her mother-inlaw pledges, “We’ll always be there for you,” it sounds like a blessing but may turn out to be a curse. The pressure on Adenike to bear a son makes what English princesses endure seem like subtle hinting by comparison. Adenike is forced to drink a fertility potion but Ayodale refuses to see a specialist with her. His mother’s proposed solutions suggest the “It takes a village” concept originated in Nigeria. Once the real drama is set in motion director Andrew Dosunmu’s slow pacing becomes a handicap, but this is one of the best-photographed films of the year and the tradition vs. assimilation plot is always timely. –Steve Warren

WE’RE THE MILLERS (R)

 The trailer for We’re the Millers is probably the year’s funniest and the movie itself isn’t far behind. The previews don’t leave many surprises but there are a lot of additional laughs as the story goes exactly where you want it to, upholding traditional values within its uberraunchy context. Jason Sudeikis is a small-time drug dealer who assembles a fake family (stripper Jennifer Aniston, virginal geek Will Poulter and teen runaway Emma Roberts) to help him cross the border from Mexico in an RV full of weed. Only Ed Helms strikes a false note as an absurd American druglord who couldn’t possibly function in this milieu. –Steve Warren

THE LATEST DVD, BLU RAY & VOD RELEASES

BOARDWALK EMPIRE: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON

The Sopranos may never be topped as far as TV gangster dramas go, but creator Terence Winter (a writer on The Sopranos) comes close. This season, anti-hero Nucky Thompson is screwed, in love with a showgirl he can’t control and up against a rival (Bobby Cannavale) he can’t stop. The supporting cast– especially Kelly Macdonald, Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Shannon, and Stephen Root– has never been better, and the stakes for Nucky have never been higher. This was by far the show’s best season, with incredible plot twists and a stunning turn from Cannavale as one of the small screen’s greatest raving sociopath. Bring on season 4!

GIRLS: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON

Much of the charm of Lena Dunham’s “Millennials in the City” series started to wear off by season two. This show about kids trying to make it in NYC (thanks to handouts from parents) is as much about self-absorption as it is about finding one’s path in life. Much of this season focuses on Dunham’s character, Hannah, publishing an eBook about her life. Starker and sadder, the second season veers into more interesting territory in the last few episodes, when Hannah battles a debilitating OCD flare up, which forces the characters to deal with actual problems rather than self-made ones. With a weak beginning and strong finish,

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of love? Jill Scott: The only thing I can remember doing is that I caught a flight, and it was pretty far —maybe a good six hours— to apologize. It was big. He said he accepted my apology, but he really didn’t. I thought that was major. (She laughs) I’m busy.

HELL ON WHEELS: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON

This Western drama may not garner the attention of Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, but the second season shows a series getting more comfortable with itself. Set during the post-Civil War construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, the show centers on Confederate officer-turned-railroad chief Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), who deals with corrupt politicians, dangerous misfits, and pissed off Native Americans that live in and around the temporary town. The writing and acting are solid (including Common as sheriff and Colm Meaney as former railroad boss), but the impressive scenery takes almost as much credit for helping to make this show so entertaining.

THE OFFICE: SEASON NINE

Say what you will about the inconsistent seasons that came in the wake of Steve Carell’s departure or the doldrums that set in after Jim (John Krasinksi) and Pam (Jenn Fischer) settled down and had kids. But few sitcoms in the history of TV have lasted so long, featured so many colorful characters, or created such a strong bond with their audience as did The Office. Season 9 brings the series to its conclusion by tying up all the loose ends: Will Andy remain or pursue a career in showbiz? Will Jim and Pam move to Philly? Will Dwight EVER move up the corporate ladder? The answers will prove satisfying for longtime fans, with almost all of the show’s beloved characters returning for the emotional finale.

The Bay Area’s Get Dead Releases One of 2013’s Most Remarkable Records BY JOHN B. MOORE

HE PUNK BAND GET DEAD HAD been knocking around the Bay Area for years, building up a reputation for stellar punk rock anthems delivered via acoustic guitars. It seems inevitable that the band would eventually find their way to local punk rock kingpin Fat Mike and his Fat Wreck Chords label. Bad News is a dozen absolutely remarkable takes of self-confessional punk rock that calls to mind everyone from Against Me and Billy Bragg to Joe Strummer and Rancid. Bassist Timmy Mehew spoke with us recently about finally finding a home at Fat, playing acoustic instruments and the pros and cons of going the DIY route. How did you guys first get the attention of Mike and the folks at Fat Wreck Chords? We’ve spent the last six years playing in San Francisco and the greater Bay area and earned our tenure booking our own tours on the West coast and overseas. We’d only sent out maybe three or four demos over the years to labels we could see ourselves being a part of, but we networked what we considered a pretty decent niche for ourselves and just let our desire to make good music keep us afloat. Last summer Mike happened to see our video, “This One’s for Johnny,” and hit us up via e-mail. Have you guys always played with acoustic instruments? The first few songs we ever wrote, which were acoustic-ish, were the ones that would ultimately define our sound, but it took a long

time for us to realize that. As a band, we were initially aiming for something a bit harder so we wrote a slew of punk, ska-esque, and rock and roll songs and intended to record them but couldn’t afford to make that record. With an impending tour on the horizon we took those first few songs and wrote about seven other similar sounding ones in about week and recorded “Letters Home.” We finally made that hardcore record but we eventually returned to our folky-punk roots and compiled the songs that made up “Tall Cans and Loose Ends,” some of which are on the new record. From a writing standpoint, the hardcore songs have always felt a bit forced while the acoustic folky-punk songs have always just come much more naturally to us. After all, they’re the ones you can write while inebriated at four in the morning and then get your derelict friends to sing along with. What can you tell me about the new record? I’ve never felt that we ever sounded like anyone else but I also never thought that we had our own discernible sound until I listened to the test pressing of this record. It’s gritty and raw, but dynamic without taking away from the songs. Our tendency in the past has been to increase the production on our consecutive acoustic efforts but Mike made the decision to keep it stripped down and a bit more bare bones than “Tall Cans.” The result is something that, I think, lets all of our best qualities come through and allows the songs take their natural shape. We’re really excited to share it with those that will listen.

You had some guests on this one didn’t you? We did. A couple of the songs from Tall Cans made the cut and those feature some instrumentation from our friend Miles Peck of The Swingin’ Utters. He did some mandolin, accordion, and - I shit you not - glockenspiel. Then, our long-time friend Stacey Dee, of Angry Amputees fame, did some backups on a song called “Bartender.” And we also had our friends Adam Theis, of The Jazz Mafia, and Keith Douglas, of The Mad Caddies, come in to do horns for “Welcome to Hell”. Lyrically, the songs come off as pretty personal. Have you ever thought you might have shared too much in some of your songs? We’re pretty candid dudes. To be in a band, or even in a van with us, is to be constantly heckled and razzed. We really don’t give each other an inch. While this has certainly been problematic in the past as it causes people to get irritable, it’s also kept us incredibly honest with one another. I think Sammy wrote a lot of those lyrics knowing that we wouldn’t let him get away with anything less than the brutal truth; we’re too good of friends to expect less.

and Fat, or course, has AMAZING contacts so we’ll have to see what materializes. As far as merchandise goes, I can’t imagine a band being without the resources to pull together a merch order. I’m sure if we asked the label for help they’d give it us but not before casting us a sideways glance; they’re incredibly helpful down there and not without a sense of self-respect. In general, we just want to be as in control of our destiny as possible, even if it means being selective about the minor details of a shirt. So much of being in a band, especially a punk band, relies on networking and keeping your artistic integrity aligned with those you’re working with. So far, we don’t feel we’ve had to compromise that at all.

So despite being on Fat, you guys are still going to do your own booking and t-shirts? It’s a little too early to tell. I imagine we’ll take the best of both worlds. As previously stated, we’ve carved what we consider to be a pretty respectable niche in the punk rock community and we’ve got some good contacts

What’s next for the band? Record. Tour. Rinse. Repeat. But mostly tour. There’s a lot of anticipation from our camp surrounding the release of the record and to see how it’s received, and we’re excited to see how our song writing evolves for the next record, as well.

T’S ALMOST CLICHÉ AT THIS POINT TO cite a band’s maturity from one record to the next, but for Michigan’s Citizen, in looking at the time between their debut and the just released Youth, it’s hard to deny the amount of growing up that went into that gap. Still high schoolers when they wrote that first record, the five-song Young States EP, they spent most of the next year in a van crossing the country and banking experiences many take decades to collect. Playing their songs day after day brought a tighter sound and their musical influences expanded as well. So when it was time to hit the studio for the follow up record, Citizen was almost an entirely different band.

Guitarist Nick Hamm spoke recently about the differences between those two albums. You guys hit the road for months when your first EP came out and you hadn’t been out of school for that long at the time. What was the hardest thing to get used to about being a touring band? The hardest thing was obviously learning to be away from home for long periods of time. Being in high school and seeing the same people every day and then immediately leaving for tour and being in a different city or state every day is a huge change for some 18 year old boys. Did you have much time on tour to work on new songs or did that happen after you got back home? We booked studio time before we had the record written which caused a decent amount of stress. We didn’t have a lot of time to write but we ended up making it happen, alongside Will Yip. He made the process very smooth and fun. Speaking of Will how was the recording process different than the first go round? The first time we went to Studio 4 (Yip’s studio in PA); it was for the split we put out with Turnover. We were only there for two days. This time, we were there for over three weeks and we were living in a house in Norristown. That was really cool and made the process even more enjoyable. The main difference this time around was time. We had a bit more time to make sure every tone was good and every song was well constructed. We also got to hang with Will for longer and eat Thai food with him all the time. That was the best part.

Did you change anything about the writing process from Young States to Youth? We were like 16 and 17 when we were writing the songs on Young States. We sort of had no clue what we were doing. Even now when I listen to those songs, it just sort of sounds like parts glued together. I’d like to think the songs on Youth are a bit more structured. We’ve expanded our influences quite a bit since Young States was written, also. We became a little less concerned with certain aspects of our music and decided to focus on just writing good rock songs. How did you guys first connect with Run For Cover? In 2010, I think, we put out a split with a band called The Fragile Season. We recorded that with Vince Ratti. He showed Jeff (Casazza, owner) our songs and Jeff liked them but it obviously wasn’t the time to bring us onto the roster. We were pretty clueless. Tim (Landers) from Transit talked to Jeff quite a bit about us and kept him updated on our releases and whatnot. When we were looking for a label to put out the Turnover split, Jeff said he would sign us and we were obviously excited about that. Run For Cover is a great label with an insane roster. What’s next for you? We’re going to give Youth a proper tour in the fall but I can’t mention more about that quite yet. In October, people will be able to hear a new Citizen song on a compilation called Off The Board. Will Yip put it together in order to raise funds to become an owner and partner at Studio 4. The Dean’s List THE CLASH – Sound System (Legacy/Epic) A fitting tribute to one of the greatest bands in rock ‘n’ roll’s history JM: Like manna from heaven, the gods at Legacy have parted the clouds and offered a bonanza of music from one of the world’s greatest bands ever to plug in guitars and rail against injustice. In the form of 11 CDs and a DVD, a majority of the band’s music is finally collected in one place. This collection houses the band’s five pivotal studio albums in their original format, newly re-mastered by the remaining band members. It starts with their 1977 self-titled debut, which, with amazing songs like “White Riot,” “London’s Burning” and “Janie Jones,” should’ve merited the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame all by its damn self. Their sophomore album, Give ‘Em Enough Rope, didn’t have nearly the impact of that first record. But 1979’s London Calling cemented their reputation as the best thing going in rock music at the time, showing off snatches of reggae, funk, jazz, ska and rockabilly. The three-LP set Sandinista continued the band’s expansion into new sounds, most notably world music and rap. Though still beloved by diehard fans, it wasn’t as widely embraced by the record-buying public. The last great Clash album was 1982’s Combat Rock. Though “Rock the Casbah” is the best-known track, songs like “Know Your Rights” and “Ghetto Defiant” hold up better now, 30-plus years later. The Sound System collection, thankfully, does not include the band’s much-maligned sixth studio album Cut the Crap, which was recorded after Mick Jones left the group. Along with those five seminal albums, this stellar box set also includes three CDs of demos, non-album singles, rarities and B-sides. The set also comes with a DVD of hard-to-find footage by Don Letts and Julien Temple. Among the material included here are original promo videos and live sets, though the quality varies greatly. The boom box packaging that houses all of this was designed by Clash bassist Paul Simonon, and comes with badges, dog tags, stickers, a Clash poster, an owner’s manual, reprints of the band’s original Armagideon Times fanzine, and a new edition curated/ designed by Simonon. All in all, it’s simply sublime! O’BROTHER – Disillusion (Triple Crown) Strecthing creative boundaries BL: Though the band was born and bred on the Atlanta music scene, performing with most of its current lineup intact since frontman Tanner Merritt joined in 2008, O’Brother has never enjoyed the hipster “buzz band” status bestowed on groups like the Black Lips and Deerhunter. Perhaps that explains why

O’Brother’s sound– a mixture of metal, prog and psychedelic rock– seems so unique to Georgia. Without the burden of expectation, they were allowed to evolve at their own pace, and in their own way. Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull and Robert McDowell produced the band’s stunning 2011 debut, Garden Window. Mike Sapone (who mixed their breakthrough) takes the helm for their sophomore album, which broadens their sonic palette via artful experimentation. Thankfully, stretching their creative boundaries does nothing to dull the edges of their potent 3-guitar attack. Frontman Tanner Merritt seems particularly intent on exploring his range here: On the hallucinogenic opening track, “Come Into The Divide,” the vocals veer from Jeff Buckleystyle falsetto melodies to whisper/moaned mantras in a lower register. The end result sounds like an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, each of them tempting you to enter an otherworldly dimension from which you may or may not be able to depart. Not all the tracks here are quite so esoteric: “Parasitical” is a throbbing rocker that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Alice In Chains album, while “Context” could be the perfect soundtrack to the climactic scene of a Jerry Bruckheimer action epic. But O’Brother is at its most interesting when it spreads its compositional wings and takes dynamic flight, as it does on “Oblivion,” “Absence” and the title track, which range in length from 6:43 to over 9 minutes. They may not be one of Atlanta’s buzziest bands. But Disillusion proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that O’Brother is well on its way to being one of Georgia’s best. HUGH LAURIE – Didn’t It Rain (Warner Bros) New Orleans blues/ragtime stomp in the House LVS: Albums by television personalities have long been a vanity sub-genre of the record industr y, u s u a l l y relegated to the novelty section and later optioned for snickering “Golden Throats” compilations. But in the case of actor/musician Hugh Laurie, the novelty tag isn’t quite applicable. Naturally, the reason it’ll get any attention in today’s market is due to his long-running role as wisecracking Dr. Gregory House on the excellent House. But, with his second recording in recent years, the naysaying snickers have vanished and the music can stand on its own merits. 2011’s excellent Let Them Talk was a

great introduction to his style– a brusque hybrid of bar-rattling New Orleans stomp, with nods to raucous ragtime ditties. Didn’t It Rain, which was produced by Joe Henry, finds Laurie navigating the same territory, but delving deeper into the blues groove of a more somber Dr. John and the mysteries of the Mississippi Delta. Tracks such as “Wild Honey” and Alan Price’s “Changes” easily blend with the inspiring gospel feel of the title track and the remorse of the bluesy “Send Me to the ‘Lectric Chair.” The album is rounded out by standards like “One For My Baby” and “St. Louis Blues,” and presented with the bluster of old time barrelhouse piano and an impressive roster of guests. Guests like Tom Jones and Allen Toussaint are featured, and the whole party atmosphere is gelled by the witty musical repartee of Laurie’s band of pals, The Copper Bottom Band. Looking forward to his show at the Buckhead Theatre.

TRANSPLANTS– In A Warzone (Epitaph) Punk-rock supergroup disappoints with third outing JM: It took seven years for the Transplants– the side project for Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, Blink 182’s Travis Barker and Rob Aston on vocals– to follow up their last album. The result is… well, not exactly worth the wait. Yes, there are some good, even great songs on this record (specifically “Back to You” and “Come Around”). But, for every solid track, there’s a mediocre one following it up that makes you wonder if they were just looking to fill up space on the album. In A Warzone is a departure of sorts, with less of a hip-hop and drum ‘n’ bass vibe (“Something’s Different” being among the few exceptions). Without the x factor that made the Transplants so appealing in the beginning– punks embracing their love for hip-hop– the band seems like just another group of inked-up guys playing punk-rock. Seeing as how Armstrong’s main band does that style better than most, why not just save your money for the next Rancid record? (C-) RUN THE JEWELS – Self-Titled (Fool’s Gold) Two hip-hop titans formalize their partnership BL: Jaime Meline (a.k.a. r a p p e r / producer El-P) and Michael Render (a.k.a. r a p p e r / actor Killer Mike) are like peanut butter and bananas– two great tastes that taste surprisingly great together. After collaborating on 2012 solo albums, R.A.P. Music and Cancer 4 Cure, Run The Jewels finds them officially joined as a duo. It’s an oddly intoxicating blend, with El’s metaphor-drenched wordplay complemented by Mike’s more streetwise flow. Musically, El’s beats trod an accessible

middle ground between his cacophonous inclinations and grimy boom-bap simplicity. The title track blends reggae and dubstep influences with triple-time rhymes that slice like a ninja blade. “Banana Clipper” brings Big Boi into the mix for a braggadocious slammer destined to bang in clubs and car stereos, while “Twin Hype Back” features the legendary Prince Paul guiding listeners on an oddball psychedelic rap journey. Not every aural experiment here works. But killer tracks like “36-inch Chain,” “Sea Legs,” and “Get It” still make it one of 2013’s best hip-hop albums. (B+) CARLY RITTER – Self-titled (Vanguard) Born with stardom in her genes LVS: What year is this? Carly Ritter’s delightful selftitled debut has all the best qualities of a very cool ‘70s album. You’d swear this disc was from the Ronstadt/Muldaur/Waldman school of winningly winsome California folkrock. Her folky delivery, at once accomplished and simplistic, has a yearning edge to it that propels the collection of tunes into a timeless yet evocative tales of cinematic beauty. It’s probably in her blood, since her grandfather was singing cowboy Tex Ritter and her dad was the late comic actor John Ritter (Three’s Company). Ry Cooder’s son helps out on a few tracks as well, pushing the pedigree level to even higher standards. Yet Ritter has carved out her own path between gritty country and urbane pop. The result is one of the best albums of this year so far, with standout tracks that include the incredible reality of “It Is Love,” the only song this reviewer has heard that is openly influenced by famed philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. (A-) KUT U Up – Worse Than Wolves (Aggronautix) Long-anticipated sophomore effort from indie punks doesn’t disappoint JM: After taking more than a decade to assemble new material, Kut U Up has finally released their second studio album. The time away has done wonders for the San Diego-based punk-rock band. Worse Than Wolves is frustratingly short, with only six tracks. But, as a result, there is very little fat on this one, with each song just as solid as the next. There is also a little more melody here, but the rawness that makes up the core of the band’s sound is still there. It was that rawness that originally made them stick out on the Pop Disaster Tour with Green Day and Blink 182, giving it a shot of badly-needed punk rock credibility. The band, last seen in the documentary film Riding in Vans With Boys (which chronicled that tour), never actually called it quits. In fact, they spent the last 10 years playing shows here and there. Apparently, it just took them a very, very long time to find their way back into the studio. It was well worth the wait. (B) insiteatlanta.com • September 2013 • PG 23

LONG WITH THE CRISP WINDS OF FALL, comes the anticipation of the 2013 TV season. TV fans across the country are gearing up to watch, record, and discuss the new batch of shows. The major networks are pulling out all the stops as the hyped-up roll-out of the series begin. As usual, some of the hopefuls probably won’t make it past the next holiday season, but the fascinating challenge for the viewer is to find the SLEEPY HOLLOW (FOX) true hits in the middle of the mass medium of misses. This season is highlighted by the presence of beloved stars Michael J. Fox (The Michael J. Fox Show), Robin Williams (Crazy Ones), James Spader (The Blacklist), and even Monk’s Tony Shalhoub (We Are Men) being groomed for their new adventures. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Crazy Ones), Josh Holloway (Intelligence) and Sean Hayes (Sean Saves The World) are also all on the schedule. But one of the mostanticipated entries in the current race is a sci-fi action fest. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., developed by busy executive producer Joss Whedon, features Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, his character from The Avengers. Will it be a blockbuster series? The viewers will decide as they sort through the myriad of comedies and dramas offering a number of other fan favorites. Of course, no new programming slate would be complete without the often-maligned, but still-popular reality series. The hybrids continue to meld competition, often-forced spectacle and, occasionally, inspiration. On that front, the delightful kids of Junior MasterChef and the construction drama of American Dream Builders seem to anchor the genre. No matter what your taste, the unfolding 2013 Fall TV season offers something for every age and interest. You may not have time to sort through all the shows, so Insite presents a daily guide of some of the most talked-about (and advertised) fare, detailed for your viewing enjoyment. Pathos and complications arise when the two dabble in BETRAYAL (ABC) murder and intrigue. A nighttime soap that is loosely based on the Dutch TV drama Overspel. The Skinny: A great casting move with British-born model and actress Hannah Ware in the central role. The soaper has a lot of potential with its sizzling yet subdued situations and storylines.

The Stars: Tony Shalhoub, Chris Smith, Jerry O’Connell, Kal Penn. The Shill: A single-camera sitcom that follows three divorced men as they offer their advice to a younger, freshly divorced pal. As expected, forced humor and wiener jokes abound in the gritty comedy that is considerably aided by the presence of the usually excellent Tony Shalhoub. The Skinny: For those who think Two And A Half Men is funny, the same level of coarse, broad humor predominates this wacky roommate yuckfest. Wyman, the executive producer/ director of Fringe on hand, the show could rise from predictable cop drama to entertaining sci-fi adventure.

The Skinny: From Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, and fairly consistent writing and performances, the good-natured comedy could earn a decent audience.

The Skinny: High on irony and character study, this sitcom could attract smart viewers who miss the witty ‘90s interplay of Friends or Seinfield.

Wait, come back, it gets better. When they finally do win, they realize that winning brings a batch of new problems. The Skinny: A great ensemble piece, the cast, led by the delightful Summer Bishil, take the Cheers route and offer a nice slice-of-life comedy about the dangers of actually winning the lottery.

The Stars: Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Chelsea Peretti, Melissa Fumero. The Shill: A vehicle for Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg, finds the limited thespian as a detective who must straighten up and fly right when he’s partnered with a straight-laced and dedicated partner (Melissa Fumero) The Skinny: Samberg is an acquired taste, but his popularity could salvage this new take on the cop comedy genre. Previews show that it’s no Barney Miller, but it is mildly amusing.

WEDNESDAY

stellar cast carries this cautionary, futuristic tale to pleasing and often-thought-provoking results. One of the best new series of the season on any network.

The Stars: Blair Underwood, Kenneth Choi, Pablo Schreiber. The Shill: Blair Underwood stars as paraplegic detective Robert Ironside. Yes, it’s a remake of NBC’s classic crime show that featured Raymond Burr in the titular role. The Skinny: Underwood is a great actor, and the challenging role for the small screen should offer a number of intriguing possibilities. The strong supporting cast should also provide a solid bed of unique character development.

THURSDAY ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND DEBUTS OCTOBER 10 AT 8 PM ON ABC.

The Stars: Sophie Lowe, Michael Socha, John Lithgow. The Shill: Another classic story with a modern twist? Yep, this time Lewis Carroll’s Alice tale is placed in a modernday Wonderland and is a spin-off of the popular Once Upon A Time. THE TOMORROW PEOPLE (CW) The Skinny: With the considerable fire-power and promo-machine of the Disney empire, this series also set near Storybrooke, Maine, shouldn’t disappear down the rabbit hole anytime soon.

Yes, it does sound a lot like Bad News Bears. The Skinny: This one may not last long, so catch it while you can. The main reason to watch is just to see James Caan, back in action. Always entertaining and creative, even in the worst circumstances, Caan manages to bring his A-game to a D-grade sitcom.

The Stars: Will Arnett, Beau Bridges, Margo Martindale, J.B. Smoove. The Shill: Will Arnett stars as a recently divorced news reporter (where do they get these ideas?) whose newfound freedom is shattered by the divorce of his dad (Beau Bridges). Loopy family comedy-drama with neat social commentary on aging and family structures. The Skinny: Arnett and Bridges are a winning combo and the show is buoyed by the magic touch of James Burrows in the director’s chair.

The Stars: Rebel Wilson, Lauren Ash, Liza Lapira. The Shill: Executive producer Conan O’Brien and starwriter Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect”) helm this edgy sitcom that features the Australian character actress as a freethinking, wise-cracking American who leads a few nerdy and, of course, wacky and quirky friends in search of a Super Fun Night. The Skinny: In a cushy spot after Modern Family, and with the creative team of Conan O’Brien and Jeff Ross behind it, the show could have a shot at success. Wilson’s wobbly accent, however, could kill its chances.

The Stars: Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Hamish Linklater. The Shill: TV powerhouse David E. Kelley teams Robin Williams (Mork And Mindy, Goodnight Vietnam,) with Sarah Michelle Gellar for a sitcom set in an ad agency. Hilarity ensues?

The Skinny: With singer Linda Ronstadt’s recent revelation of Parkinson’s in the news, will a sitcom with the debilitating disease as a story hook be a laugh riot? Early episodes treat the illness with respect, but will audiences laugh along at the uneasy premise? Fox, who battles the disease in real life, makes the struggle believable and personifies an oftenmisunderstood malady.

FIRST SEE HER FROM A DISTANCE, ON HER knees in the sand. Her back is arched, her face and hands lifted towards the heavens as if in divine reverence. Rays of light dance across her face and nude body. She appears to me as an angel, seemingly emerging from beneath the ocean floor rather than floating on clouds. Her name is “The Phoenix,” and, like many of the statues at the Cancun Underwater Museum, she holds me transfixed with her beauty… It’s difficult to explain your reaction to a work of art to someone who hasn’t seen it. So suffice it to say that, unless you’ve been to Cancun and actually experienced the otherworldly sculptures of the Museo Subacuático de Arte (a.k.a. The Garifuna Collective Returns, 5 Years After Frontman Andy Palacio’s Death BY BRET LOVE

HE GARIFUNA IS LOCATED SOUTH of Belize City in the small fishing community of Hopkins Village which has preserved this remarkably rich culture for hundreds of years. The Garinagu people, whose language and culture is called Garifuna, descend from shipwrecked Africans whose ancestry can be traced back to the Yoruba, Ibo, and Ashanti tribes of Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. After making their way to Central America, they intermarried with Carib and Arawak Amerindians, and came to be known by the British as “Black Caribs.” Their music, dance, food and clothing offers a mixture of African, Amerindian and Spanish influences that is unique to Central America. Proclaimed a “Masterpiece of the Oral & Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2001, Garifuna culture went unknown outside the region until 2007, when Andy Palacio & the Garifuna Collective released Wátina. The album, which earned favorable comparisons to Paul Simon’s Graceland, put the culture of Belize on the map, eventually earning the title of Best World Music Album of All Time by Amazon. Unfortunately, Palacio– a prominent Belizean cultural ambassador and outspoken advocate for the preservation of Garifuna culture– died from a stroke at the untimely age of 48, just months before the band’s scheduled world tour. The loss was devastating to Belize, but even moreso to Ivan Duran, who produced Wátina and released all of Andy’s albums on his Stonetree Records label. It was Duran who was left to pick up the pieces after Palacio’s passing. Now, five years later, he and The Garifuna Collective are back with two new albums. I was recently honored to get a chance to speak with Duran about Garifuna music, Andy’s death, and the rich cultural traditions of Belize. How would you describe the Garifuna culture for people who don’t know it? It’s unique because it’s a blend of West African traditions with indigenous Caribbean traditions. It’s predominately an Arawak language, but it has many words that come from Africa, English, Spanish and French. But perhaps the most interesting aspect is the music. Garifuna music is a rich blend of African-derived rhythms mixed with soulful melodies, which are predominately from Arawak and Carib Indians. It’s very unique in the world. Can you talk about Punta and Paranda, and what makes them unique among Caribbean musical forms? In Garifuna culture, Punta and Paranda are the most popular rhythms. They’re very different. Punta is fast and danceable: It’s a fertility dance, so it’s a very sensual movement between a man and woman. It’s sung in a West African call-and-response form, with pulsating drums. Paranda is the more soulful side of Garifuna music, composed on guitar. They’re much more melodic, and there’s a bit of Latin flavor to the rhythm. The guitar was introduced when the Garifuna were exiled to Spanish colonies in Central America, and they assimilated it into the culture. It sounds very romantic, but it’s also about storytelling. Each town would have a couple of Parandaros, who’d write songs for the village. The songs would range from a love story to a tragedy, like a hurricane or someone’s house burnt down.

So they’re like the griots of West Africa? Yes, absolutely! The songs of the village traveled to other villages, and were adapted. Some songs from Honduras ended up in Belize, and vice versa. They exist in both countries, but they’re completely different. How did the Garifuna Collective originally come together? It started in the mid ‘90s, when I launched Stonetree Records. I kept working with the same musicians and composers, so it became obvious that we had chemistry. When we started recording Wátina with Andy and the rest of the guys, we had to decide what to we call it. That’s when we came up with “The Garifuna Collective.” It was the most accurate way to name the band, because it was a collective effort. Everyone contributed to the songs. When Wátina was received well, Andy took the bull by the horns, and we were very lucky for that. He was by far the biggest contributor, and also the most eloquent and charismatic.

How did Andy’s untimely passing affect you and the group? Losing Andy was a huge blow, both professionally and personally. Our whole world was shattered. Belize became a different country the next day. Andy was that big. It felt like we lost part of ourselves. There was a tour scheduled to happen after he died– a tour that had been booked many months in advance. The first thing we had to decide was whether we were going to cancel it. Everybody said, “Absolutely not! We’re going to make it the Andy Palacio Tribute tour,” which became our biggest tour ever. Andy opened up the doors for us, and there was no way we were going to let that door shut in our faces. We needed to make sure we left at least a crack open: If the world were to forget what happened, it would be extremely difficult for the next generation of Garifuna artists to take advantage of what Andy had accomplished. Amazon named Wátina “Best World Music Album of All Time.” Do you feel like the album’s success opened the world up to the culture of Belize? I take awards and lists with a grain of salt. But I can understand why there was all the publicity and willingness to acknowledge the work. Central America has never been known for positive things. When you think of the region, you think about civil wars, hurricanes, and the drug trade. You don’t think about great music. Wátina is an extremely inspiring story when you think of it in a historical perspective. In the time of St. Vincent, the Garifuna were all exiled and left on an island to die of disease and hunger. Now, not only is Garifuna culture surviving, but they’re showing the world that celebrating these traditions actually pays off. It’s remarkable what’s been accomplished with a few dedicated people.

took us 5 years to finish this album. One of the biggest accomplishments of this record, at least for me, is that now it sounds like a band. We’ve found our sound. One of the decisions we had to make is that we’ll never have a frontman again. That’s Andy’s spot, and he will never be replaced. We’re kind of like The Wailers without Bob Marley. In order to do that, we had to learn, grow and transform. Now, it feels like the whole village is singing. That’s beautiful, because it’s a true reflection of what music means in the Garifuna community and how songs are made. It’s always a collective effort.

What’s your dream for the future of the Garifuna Collective? This album gives me confidence that we have a very unique sound. Whether you like it or not is another question. My dream is that we infect other artists with our musical vibe. I think Belize’s contribution to the music world is that we can apply what we do to almost any style of music and make it better. From the way we record albums, to the instruments we use, to the way we create and arrange music, it’s totally unique. I hope that Belize can become a major tourist destination in the future, just like Jamaica was after Bob Marley. I think Belize is an ideal place, and I think we have all of the elements for that to happen.

They did have some street-level stuff, but some of it, I mean it’s a little conflicting to see a $100,000 Couture gown called “punk,” you know? Every scene gets tainted in some sort of way, usually quickly. Yeah, sure. All that stuff. Well, it was the same with the Beatles’ and the Stones,’ and all those guys’ styles. It was quickly mass-produced.

September. So ya gotta give or take a few years here and there. But yeah, I’ll guess we’ll do a tour thing. I guess it’ll be nice if my photo book gets out by then. And we do have new music coming out pretty soon, hopefully. So we’ll see.

Speaking of mass-produced, what do you think about the upcoming CBGB’s Movie? I think everyone involved with it is a little apprehensive. I wanna like it but I’m also sort of horrified by it. If they make it humorous and tongue in cheek, maybe. But I think it’s gonna be glossed over and Hollywoodized. At the same time, I don’t know, the trailer doesn’t look too bad. I like the kid who’s doing the Joey Ramone character. We’ll have to see what happens.

How is the Blondie band dynamic today, compared to the first few years? It’s a lot more professional and less crazy than it was. At first, everybody was just trying to figure out what the hell was going on. It’s the whole music scene and the whole touring situation, it’s all much more professional. Touring, you know, is an industry now; a whole industry surrounds it. It’s not anywhere near as crazy and haphazard as it was back then.

It seems to be getting a lot of advance, negative feedback. Well, I think people would like to see something darker and gritty. Because that’s what it was like, dark and gritty. It could be very glossy. I’m afraid it’s just gonna be like “Rock Of Ages,” with punk.

How are you planning the show with so much history to choose from? How do you please yourself and the fans as well with the set? We’ve been putting a lot of new songs in the show now and they seem to be integrating well. The fans seem to be liking them. In the UK, they worked well. You know, there’s a connection with the audience, when we’re playing some of those old songs we’ve played for the 80 millionth time, it still has an emotional content and the audience produces the response.

Next year is billed as the 40th anniversary of Blondie. Actually, I met Debbie 40 years ago this year, in

T CAN BE PRETTY LONELY BEING THE SOLE NON-punk band on a punk rock label. But the guys in The Joy of Painting have no complaints. And for South Division Records– the growing Michigan-based punk label that put out the band’s latest, Tender Age– you can’t argue with great music, regardless of classification. The Nashville-based boys in Joy of Painting play a deeply infectious mix of Replacements- and Weezer-inspired pop rock that has hooks sharp enough to pierce even the most cynical music fan. And Tender Age is easily the band’s best collection of songs to date. Joy of Painting singer Garreth Spinn spoke with us recently about the band’s afro-blessed namesake, the power of Elvis Costello, and how a local reporter prompted the band to throw together their last record. Let’s start out with how the band actually first came together. Did you guys all know each other pretty well before you decide to put a band together? Yeah, pretty much all of us went to Middle Tennessee State and we were just all in the same circle of musician friends. We talked about making a record, which turned into another record and more shows and we’re all just really close friends. We’re a tight crew and are always creating. It’s a great relationship between the five of us. Let’s talk about the band name. Is it in honor of Bob Ross? (Laughs) We are really into band names, and when the time came to come up with a name we made lists upon lists of potential names. I don’t remember having a crazy revelation or anything. Kyle actually came up with it. I don’t even remember being super excited about it, but it was something we all liked and we all have varying opinions in the band, so it was a surprise that more than two people liked it. We sat on it for a couple of days and I watched the show (The Joy of Painting) for 4 or 5 hours one day… Kyle re-discovered The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross, and he started coming up with PG 28 • September 2013 • insiteatlanta.com

a list of Bob Ross-related band names. I think the nod to the TV show is pretty subtle, at least in the energy and spirit with which Bob had for his TV show. We sort of made it fit for a rambunctious rock band… The bad thing about being a band in this era is that good band names are few and far between. You gotta take what you can get. I was reading somewhere, and it may have been in your bio, that you actually didn’t record this one in a proper studio. No, it was done at home. We are lucky in a sense that we have a lot of resources within the band. We all studied music business or audio engineering, so we have a lot of resources in that sense. Mark is an incredibly talented engineer, and he’s been working on stuff for a while. We demoed to see what it would sound like, and we really liked those. It certainly sounds professional. Mark did an incredibly good job. We also had some help from a friend who is a pop and country music engineer in town. We brought him in because we were really going for a more radiofriendly sound. We wanted something fun and catchy, so we brought in someone who has done mixes for radio and we tried our best to make something major label sounding with the heart of an indie band. How do you approach writing songs? Do you guys write together as a band, or do you come up with the lyrics first? Well, there are a few songs, like the track “I’m Reelin,” that we all wrote together. That’s one of those songs that just came out of a jam essentially. Most of the other songs I wrote at home. Songs Like “Dontchu Wanna” and “Back to Romance” were all songs that I sat down and wrote, but there were others that we actually wrote in the studio… One thing that goes along with all of the songs is they’ve gotta be hooky, they’ve gotta be catchy and memorable. That’s mostly my contribution to the band. I love pop music. I don’t like anything longer than four minutes.

That’s one thing that stood out for me about this record. Pop is such a taboo word nowadays, but Elvis Costello was ultimately a pop musician. He wrote phenomenal songs, but they were essentially pop songs. The cool thing about Elvis Costello is that he redefined pop music in a lot of ways. He wrote some really poppy songs, but they were only ones that he could sing. He’s a big inspiration to me as a writer. I want to write things that are unique, but accessible. People like Elvis Costello or Harry Nilsson, who I adore, are guys I idolize. They’re writing very memorable pop tunes, but a little left of center. So South Division put out this record, and they are a great indie punk label. But you guys don’t really sound like much of the other groups on their roster. I’ll give you the real story of how it happened, and it’s pretty lame on my part. For a while there, anyone who “liked” the Joy of Painting Facebook page, I would creep on them to see where they were from. I saw a guy who liked our Facebook page, did some digging and saw that he was from South Division. We were trying to put out a 7”, so I sent him some songs and asked him what he thought. He got back to me and said, “Let’s do it.” Having a resource like South Division has made our lives easier in so many ways. I couldn’t be more grateful.

11. NEW YORK GIANTS

HE YEAR WAS 1999. THE ATLANTA FALCONS played the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII. The sides probably remember the 34-19 game in two very different ways. The Birds want to forget all about Eugene Robinson’s off-the-field nightmare. The Broncos still daydream about John Elway’s on-the-field heroics. Nearly 15 years later, these same two teams are on a collision course for another encounter, this time at Super Bowl XLVIII in New York City on February 2, 2014. And while the names on the back of the jerseys have changed, the outcome won’t— Denver will once again trump Atlanta on the biggest of stages.

The three things the Giants are most thankful for: 1) QB Eli Manning; 2) The WR tandem of Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks; 3) The fact they don’t have a single road game in the month of November.

NFC

It’s only fitting that the Cowboys’ home will be called AT&T Stadium for the first time this year because if Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and the rest don’t make a serious playoff run, fans around Big D will be calling for some major changes.

1. ATLANTA

While the Birds’ stellar offense gets all of the headlines —With Ryan, Jones, White and new workhorse RB Steven Jackson, we see why— it’s the something-to-prove D (rookie corners Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant will be household names in two years) that will guide the A to NYC.

2. SAN FRANCISCO

We understand the S.I. covers and Madden commercials for 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. The guy has all the makings of Steve Young 2.0. But with that battered WR group, it would take Joe Montana ’89 to keep things looking halfway decent out there.

3. GREEN BAY

Though Greg Jennings is gone and Jordy Nelson is on a gimpy knee, we still think Aaron Rodgers is the best overall signal caller in the game. He, tight end monster Jermichael Finley and rookie RB Eddie Lacy will keep the Pack at the peak of the NFC North.

12. TAMPA BAY

Because the Bucs are near the bottom of this conference ranking does not mean we don’t see some potential. It’s just that we still see QB Josh Freeman’s ugly numbers (17 INTs and more defensive misreads than we can count) from a year ago, too.

13. DALLAS

14. ARIZONA

Contrary to what this lowly placement insinuates, we like the kind of thinking (signing QB Carson Palmer, picking Tyrann Mathieu) coming out of Glendale these days. They’ll be a playoff contender in a year.

15. ST. LOUIS

We love the draft picks (WR Tavon Austin, LB Alec Ogletree) and still like the quarterback (Sam Bradford), but we loathe the Rams’ early schedule (Atlanta, Dallas and San Francisco before October).

16. CAROLINA

The Panthers are a sketchy 2-12 over the last two years in contests decided by seven points or less. That’s a leadership issue. If QB Cam Newton can get his heart and head to hum along to the same beat, that will no longer be a problem.

4. DETROIT

Reggie Bush was drafted at just the 40th slot in most ESPN fantasy drafts this year, a sign that folks don’t really think he’ll shine alongside the stat-stuffing Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. We’re not one of those folks.

5. NEW ORLEANS

We’ve seen Sean Payton and Drew Brees work wonders together, so we’re not putting anything outside the realm of possibility in the Crescent City. But if the Saints are to snatch the NFC South crown from the Falcons, they’ll have to survive a brutal four-game stretch vs. Dallas, San Francisco, Atlanta and Seattle.

6. SEATTLE

Even with all the regular-season flash and playoff pizzazz, the do-everything Russell Wilson still only averaged 182 passing yards per game a year ago. Translation: He’s nowhere near his peak. NFC West, be very, very scared.

7. MINNESOTA

Everyone was so enamored with Adrian Peterson’s MVP rushing numbers (12 TDs, 2,097 yards) that the team’s pitiful passing stats (31st in passing yards) were largely overlooked. Our calculations suggest that the signing of Greg Jennings should correct that.

8. WASHINGTON D.C

In case you were wondering, Vincent Gray’s tenure as D.C. mayor is up in 2015. If Redskins sensation Robert Griffin III keeps stirring excitement around the city like he has thus far, he’d win the election in a landslide. ‘Til then, he gets our vote for Most Fascinating Young QB in the NFL.

9. CHICAGO

We’re still a bit unclear as to how effective the usually explosive Brandon Marshall will be after hip surgery. If he’s anywhere close to where his 2012 numbers were (11 TDs, 1,508 yards), the Bears could blow forecasts of mediocrity out of the water.

10. PHILADELPHIA

Coach Chip Kelly displayed a brilliant offensive mind at the University of Oregon. But seeing a 4-3 defense from the Fresno State Bulldogs ain’t the same as one from the New York Giants. We’ll give him a year to get his feet wet.

Falcons’ Steven Jackson

1. DENVER

AFC

Seeing other sports outlets echo our Super Bowl prediction for this team should have us pause, but we’re just so enamored by Peyton Manning, Wes Welker and Demaryius Thomas on offense and the respectable chaps on D —Sucks that the suspended Von Miller won’t suit up until Week 7 though— that we’re sticking with our gut here.

2. HOUSTON

To shift from last year’s Jekyll-and-Hyde ways —The Texans started the season 11-1 but lost three of their last four matchups— they need for Arian Foster to stay healthy and the steady defense to keep bringing the pain.

3. NEW ENGLAND

Danny Amendola fills in perfectly for Wes Welker in the slot. Tom Brady throws for 4,500 yards. The Patriots win the AFC East. The world is round. Blah, blah, blah.

4. BALTIMORE

So much attention has been given to the names (Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Anquan Boldin) lost by the defending Super Bowl champs that people are forgetting about the more-than-capable studs (Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Torrey Smith) still donning the black and purple.

5. CINCINNATI

Not sure if we’re more excited to see the Andy Dalton-to-A.J. Green aerial show in its third full year, or the debut acts of TE Tyler Eifert and RB Giovani Bernard.

6. PITTSBURGH

Ben Roethlisberger last hoisted the Lombardi trophy on February 2009. Seems like ages ago, right? What with Big Ben’s growing list of injuries, an aging defense and the loss of WR Mike Wallace, look for even more wrinkles to show in Steel City.

7. INDIANAPOLIS

We’re still a bit shocked that the Colts were able to pull 10 wins out of last year’s hat. For any chance at more magic, wunderkind Andrew Luck needs guys like Darrius Heyward-Bey, T.Y. Hilton and Vick Ballard to have wonderful years.

8. KANSAS CITY

How bad was the Chiefs’ QB play a year ago? The squad’s 169 yards per game was the lowest in the league. Enter: Alex Smith. While far from the flashiest name, putting him alongside new coach Andy Reid and superstar-in-the-making RB Jamaal Charles can only help that number improve.

9. NEW YORK JETS

Sorry, but we’re not sold on Geno Smith being the guy behind center after Mark Sanchez’s inevitable final hiccup. We’re also not buying the idea that Rex Ryan still has control over the circus better known as the Jets’ locker room.

10. TENNESSEE

Like Ryan Reynolds’ movie career or Apple TV, we’re just waiting for Jake Locker to finally live up to the hype. If there’s any time for the talented QB to do it, it’s right now, especially with Chris Johnson focused, Kenny Britt avoiding trouble with the law and Shonn Greene on the roster.

11. CLEVELAND

Much like the Indians in MLB and what the Cavaliers appear to be doing in the NBA, the Browns are on the cusp of becoming relevant again. Exciting young backs (Trent Richardson), new offensive coordinators (Norv Turner) and big-name adds to the defense (Paul Kruger) tend to have that effect.

12. MIAMI

Mike Wallace’s addition to the wideout crew shows that the Dolphins want to compete. We’re just not so sure that Miami as a whole has the first-team talent and second-line support to really put up much of a fight.

13. BUFFALO

Though there’s a new head coach (Doug Marrone), new QB (rookie E.J. Manuel) and new mindset for the Bills, we’re still expecting the same old outcome— another postseason-less season.

14. SAN DIEGO

After a nine-win year in ’10, an eight-win one in ’11 and a seven-win campaign in ’12, the front office elected to start over, replacing head coach Norv Turner with Mike McCoy. The so-so squad will be lucky to have a six-win season in ’13.

15. OAKLAND

You may not hear it immediately over all the booos coming from the Bay, but there’s a steady cry from fans to see what Terrelle Pryor could do as the team’s No. 1 signal caller. After a likely 2-4 start, he’ll deserve his shot.

16. JACKSONVILLE
