Kevin Russell Shannon Overby

President and CEO, B/CS Convention & Visitors Bureau

Attracting visitors and tourism to the Bryan/College Station area is the main goal of the Bryan/ College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau. President and CEO Shannon Overby and her staff attract businesses and visitors by inviting companies to host meetings, conferences and athletic events in the Brazos Valley. “For a long time, the perception of our community has been rural and agricultural,” says Overby. “But, with the new companies moving in and promising growth due to these companies, we are starting to showcase B/CS as a metropolitan area. Overby says from a visitor’s point of view, the community is becoming more attractive and welcoming to visitors for a variety of reasons. With Texas A&M University growing and changing rapidly, new hotels under construction and restaurants that are scheduled to open, visitors find Bryan and College Station an appealing place to visit contributing to an increase in the community’s economy. During the EOC, Overby will present statistics about the significant growth of tourism in the area highlighting details about new hotels and restaurants that are scheduled to open and their impact on the local economy. Overby is a graduate of Texas A&M (Class of ’91) and has been with the Bryan/College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau for more than 20 years. She has worked in hotel management and international sales and is active in committees within the Destination Marketing Association and Texas Travel Industry Association. Overby is currently working towards her Certified Destination Marketing Executive (CDME) certification.

City of Bryan, Director of Development Services

“The economic outlook for this area is looking great this year,” says Kevin Russell. As a resident of the Bryan/College Station community for more than 22 years, Russell can attest to the major growth of the area both by seeing it change over the years and statistically as part of his career with the City of Bryan. “With regard to existing and future retail establishments in Bryan, our staff uses any tool available to help keep them running successfully and from going out of business,” Russell says. He also says there is constant activity from prospective businesses looking at the area to bring in new businesses. These employers look to the City of Bryan to provide them with census and other data to assist with their decision to base a company here. As the director of development services, Russell oversees planning and building in the City of Bryan. During the EOC, Russell will reveal current updates on Axis Pipe and Tube construction in North Bryan, an addition to the economy that will add 285 new manufacture jobs that will ship products both nationally and internationally. Russell also will speak about current projects underway with Coulter Airfield. Over the next three years, the airfield will see $3 million in improvement projects, one of which is the runway lighting. Russell has held several positions at the City of Bryan including Code Enforcement Officer, Development Manager, Director of Planning and Development and Director of Economic Development. He is a member of the American Planning Association.

Frank Clark, Jr.

Frank Clark, Jr. will be teaming with Kevin Russell to provide information about the City of Bryan’s guidance and assistance to businesses, builders, and developers as they navigate the city’s development process. During the EOC, Clark will reveal current updates on Axis Pipe and Tube construction in North Bryan, an addition to the economy that will add 285 new manufacturing jobs that will ship products both nationally and internationally. “At the City of Bryan, we try to help businesses move into town as smoothly as possible” says Clark. ” When it comes to new businesses moving to the area, Clark says the City of Bryan realizes “time is money.” Other areas of Clark’s duties include initiating and maintaining relationships with small and large businesses in the community, providing guidance and assistance as possible to support and grow their business, identifying new businesses, welcoming them on behalf of the city and providing support with “start-up” issues that relate to the city or other public agencies. Clark also works with the City of Bryan Police and Fire Departments and Brazos County on business support programs to ensure the city has a friendly and streamlined approach.

Kelly Templin City Manager, College Station

“Good news is coming!” says Kelly Templin, College Station’s city manager. “This is a very exciting and busy time for the City of College Station.” Templin says that he is hoping to unveil exciting specifics at the 2014 Economic Outlook Conference including

a sales tax projection. Since 2007, Templin says the hotel tax revenues have risen 47 percent for College Station. Templin will also provide details about Northgate’s 1st Street and Entrance Square, the College Station Medical district, the University Drive “hospitality corridor” and the new College Station Visitor’s Bureau that will be located in the Chimney Hill Shopping Center. “I am not sure there has ever been a more exciting time for College Station,” Templin says. “We are perfectly positioned to have a great year and promising economic increases. It is up to us to capitalize on this exciting opportunity.” Templin is a third generation Aggie who has worked in and with municipal governments for more than two decades. He was appointed City Manager of College Station on November 4, 2013. Beginning in 2011, Templin had previously served as city manager for Seabrook.

Dr. Brett Giroir

Interim Executive Vice President and CEO, and Professor, College of Medicine, Texas A&M Health Science Center

Dr. Brett Giroir is an internationally renowned physician-scientist who assumed the role of interim executive vice president for the Texas A&M Health Science Center in October 2013. Giroir plays a major role in the continued development of the biomedical corridor that continues to stimulate new jobs and economic growth in the Brazos Valley. “I think the economic outlook for the Brazos Valley is extremely bright,” says Giroir. Catalyzed by the potential at Texas A&M University, numerous sectors are attracted to the Brazos Valley as an ideal place for expansion and relocation. “As a citizen, I see a wide diversification of companies wanting to bring their businesses to the community.” Giroir will discuss the current progress of the Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing (CIADM), a public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Health

and Human Services, designed to enhance the nation’s emergency preparedness against emerging infectious diseases, including pandemic influenza, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. Over a 25-year contract, this facility is projected to have a $42 billion impact and create more than 1,000 jobs in the local area. Giroir will provide insight into the expansion and growth of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, foreshadow upcoming initiatives of the CIADM, and speak to how our local and state workforce will benefit from this addition to the Brazos Valley. “We have strategic plans in place and have curriculum being developed from the high school level to associates, certificate programs, undergraduate and graduate programs to supply an efficient, trained workforce to support this center,” says Giroir. Prior to joining the Texas A&M Health Science Center, Giroir served as Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives for the Texas A&M University System and Principal Investigator for the Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing. He has also served in the federal government as Deputy Director, then Director, of the Defense Sciences Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Giroir is the recipient of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Pubic Service; Texas A&M University System Excellence in Innovation Award in 2010; and a finalist for the 2012 Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year Award.

Tom Wilkinson, Jr. Executive Director, Brazos Valley Council of Governments

Tom Wilkinson will begin panel two of the EOC with a presentation from the Brazos Valley Council of Governments. Wilkinson has served as executive directory of BVCOG since 1993 and will discuss transportation and the future of the workforce in the Brazos Valley. click www.insitebrazosvalley.com

Wilkinson and the BVCOG want to prepare the local workforce for the new biotech companies coming to the region. “All of the pieces of this expansion and growth are falling into place, but bringing employers such as these in requires us to get the workforce prepared, and not just at the PhD level.” He notes that these companies are attracted to the Brazos Valley because Texas A&M offers both a College of Medicine as well as a College of Veterinary Medicine. As a hub for biotechnology, having available employees with valuable skill sets and the education necessary to supply biotech-related positions will attract more employers to the B/ CS area. Wilkinson serves as a board member of the Executive Director’s Advisory Council of the National Association of Regional Councils. He is also the president of the Brazos Valley Affordable Housing Corporation, past president of The Arts Council of Brazos Valley, and an advisory board member of the School of Rural Public Health at Texas A&M University.

This attracts companies and gives a positive economic outlook on the community.” Parks plans to highlight area growth in his presentation, but also address the need for smart choices to fund projects. “It takes money to complete major projects, and we have seen that the funds are drying up. State and federal tax revenue does not have as much purchasing power as it did in the past. Cars are becoming more fuel-efficient and the fuel tax is not generating enough revenue to build projects we need here in Bryan/College Station to handle the growth. As a community, we have to figure out how to compensate for the loss of state and federal funds while allowing our community to grow,” he says. Parks has been with the Brazos Valley Council of Governments for 11 years. He is certified through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and works regionally in the seven counties that make up BVCOG in the areas of regional transportation planning, economic development, GIS mapping, homeland security, housing, workforce, health care, broadband development and other regional issues.

Michael Parks

Assistant Executive Director, Brazos Valley Council of Government

Currently serving as the Assistant Executive Director at the Brazos Valley Council of Governments (BVCOG), Michael Parks has years of expertise in the area of transportation. He joined the BVCOG after holding the positions of director of the Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and staff transportation planner for nine years in Las Cruces, New Mexico. “Brazos Valley is looked at as a ‘logistics hub’ because companies can locate here in the Brazos Valley as it is an area that essentially connects to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio without major freeways and congestion,” Parks says. “Companies can locate here and still provide service to the large metropolitan cities fairly quickly.

Catherine Hejl

Bryan District Engineer, Texas Department of Transportation

Catherine Hejl graduated from Texas A&M University in 1984 and began her career with the Texas Department of Transportation in 1985. As the Bryan District Engineer since October 2009, Hejl works with the cities of Bryan and College Station to oversee transportation needs of the local and surrounding communities. “My main message and number one priority is safety-first and foremost,” says Hejl. She plans to open her presentation at the EOC with traffic safety as well as presenting information about jobs and projects that will affect Brazos County. “I will discuss the jobs and projects that are coming up that meet the TxDOT goals of relieving traffic congestion and create a safe roadway system to connect our Texas cities,” says Hejl. One of the projects she will highlight is the State Hwy. 249

project that will provide access from Houston to College Station through Grimes County. Hejl has received the TxDOT Greer award as well as the Greater Brazos Valley Transportation Excellence Award. One of the highlights of her career was leading the contra flow of 113 miles of Interstate 45 in 2005 through Walker, Madison, Leon and Freestone Counties as Hurricane Rita approached the Texas coast. She worked with employees across her district and the two neighboring districts, Houston and Dallas, to successfully complete the contra flow from Houston to Dallas.

Jim Gaines

Research Economist, Texas A&M Research Center

At his fifth annual invitation to present at the EOC, Jim Gaines will give his “thousand-foot view” of the 2014 Bryan/College Station economy from the perspective of the area’s real estate industry. His presentation will provide real estate trends and the impact they have on the economy of the B/ CS area. “The Bryan/College Station community is a vibrant, active community that is going through growth and expansion, says Gaines. “The outlook for 2014 is a little better than previous years.” One of those factors will be the remodel and expansion of Texas A&M’s Kyle Field with more tickets sold for games and increasing visitor numbers flooding into the Bryan/College Station area on Aggie home football game weekends. Overall, Gaines sees a positive outlook as new commercial development is occurring around the Bryan/College Station community. “As Texas A&M keeps expanding, student dorms are full. This keeps the demand for student rental properties high. We see several coming up quickly around the campus,” says Gaines. He will

Commissioner, Southeastern Conference

The 2014 Brazos Valley Economic Outlook Conference will conclude with Commissioner Mike Slive of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Justin Connolly of ESPN giving the keynote address during the luncheon. Slive will provide background and discuss the growth of the SEC brand, which includes the addition of Texas A&M University and the University of Missouri in 2012. Slive, named the seventh commissioner of the SEC in July 2002, has more than 40 years of legal and athletic administrative experience. Since his arrival at the SEC, he has developed initiatives designed to maintain and improve the SEC’s position as one of the top intercollegiate athletic conferences in the nation both on and off the fields of play. On the playing fields during Slive’s tenure, the SEC has won 62 national championships, including eight Bowl Championship Series crowns and the last seven in a row. The SEC has won national titles in 15 of its 21 sponsored sports during Slive’s 11 years as SEC Commissioner. Slive is a native of Utica, N.Y. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962. He earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School in 1965 and an LLM from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1966.

Justin Connolly

Senior Vice President, Programming for College Networks, ESPN

Justin Connolly joined ESPN in 2003 and leads ESPN’s college networks. Connolly will join Commissioner Slive as a keynote speaker during the EOC luncheon. “We look forward to the Brazos Valley Economic Outlook Conference and see it as an opportunity to get out in front of a passionate group,” says Connolly. “I attended Manziel’s last home football game of this season, and the atmosphere in the Brazos Valley is incredible – off the charts!” says Connolly. Connolly will focus his part of the presentation on the new SEC Network that will launch in August 2014. He will explain how this network can play a role in expanding and opening up economic opportunities. The SEC Network will be run by ESPN but co-branded and focused on the SEC. Built in collaboration with the conference, the first game that will be aired on the SEC Network will be the Texas A&M at South Carolina game and will be exclusive to the SEC Network. The SEC Network will be based out of ESPN studios in Charlotte, N.C. and will create more jobs within ESPN. Prior to his new post, Connolly served as senior vice president, national accounts for Disney and ESPN media networks. He was responsible for all domestic distribution and licensing efforts for The Walt Disney Company’s linear networks, broadband and VOD content within the Media Networks Group. Prior to joining ESPN, Connolly worked in the corporate finance group for The Walt Disney Company’s corporate treasury department in Burbank, Calif. Connolly is a native of Boston. He graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1998 and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2003. i

food will grace the Brazos County Expo Complex on January 31 for the 7th Annual 50 Men Who Cook Fundraiser. The largest annual fund raiser for the College Station ISD Education Foundation, 50 Men Who Can Cook has grown exponentially since its inception in 2008 and has grossed an estimated $435,000 total; last year’s event alone raised $112,000. The growth is expected to

Fusing food and fun to raise funds for the College Station ISD Education Foundation continue with a fundraising goal of $125,000, says Teresa Benden, director of the Edu cation Foundation. “We are bursting at the seams. We had about 1,500 people in attendance last year,” says Benden. The growth and popularity of the fundraiser has resulted in a waiting list for chefs to par ticipate. Even the name has been surpassed- 66 booths with a total of 114 men will cook this year. “It’s unique. There is nothing else like it out there,” says Benden. 50 Men Who Can Cook features com munity and school leaders as “celebrity chefs.” Each chef, or team of chefs, picks a recipe of their choice and provides 500 two-ounce samples. A $50 ticket for patrons includes beer, wine, and all the food you can eat. In addition to food and

drink, 50 Men will feature an expanded silent auction with signed sports memorabilia and present teacher minigrant projects. The minigrant presentations allow people to see their money in action. Teacher mini-grants are valued up to $750 and fund in-classroom projects to promote innovative learning. “With all the budget cuts, we’ve had to tighten our belts. The Foundation bridges the gap where the tax dollars fall short,” says Benden. The Foundation was started in 1999 by a group of community members want ing to support the public schools. Since then, more $1.7 million has been raised for new school programs, student scholarships, teacher grants, and more. Further promoting innovative learning and incorporating technology,

the Foundation has recently launched Success 24/7, an online and on-demand website providing student support in core subjects for grades seven through 12. Ac cessible by computer, smart phone or tablet, Success 24/7 takes learning to the kids… and helps parents. “We’re getting great results with kids accessing and using it,” says Benden, adding that the online platform also supports students who are struggling or missed class by providing extra help outside the classroom. Additionally, hands-on initiatives are also made pos sible through the Founda tion. The Aquatic Science Department at Consolidated High School has been able to establish a tilapia farm where students raise and harvest fish. The Food Science Department also benefits by

hosting a fish fry fundraiser with the harvested tilapia. The money raised goes back to the aquatic science center to further promote the de partment’s projects. Students get the opportunity to follow the food chain from begin ning to end and gain entre preneurial exposure with a self-sustaining business. Programs such as Success 24/7 and the tilapia farm are made possible by 50 Men Who Can Cook, whose suc cess has replaced the need for an annual fundraising cam paign for the Foundation. “Everybody loves it,” remarks Benden. “Everybody has a lot of fun. years ago with an idea to raise money for Scotty’s House and bring a 5K and half-marathon to Bryan/College Station. The result was the Armadillo Dash. The brainchild of Dr. Jennifer Friedman, the Armadillo Dash has since raised more than $228,000 for local children’s charities and attracts close to 2000 runners. This year’s Dash will begin and end at Veteran’s Park in College Station on March 2, and feature fun water stops, extensive community participation, and a mostly flat, fast course. “Everything goes back to the community,” says Jane Riley, Armadillo Dash board member. The race now benefits Scotty’s House, Still Creek Ranch, the Boys & Girls Club of the Brazos Valley, and the Food Bank Backpack Program. Each charity stands to receive $10-

15,000. “We wanted to give back to those who give back to children in the Brazos Valley,” says Riley.

Scotty’s House Scotty’s House, the initial beneficiary of the Armadillo Dash, is the child advocacy center for the Brazos Valley. Providing services to abused and neglected children in the community, Scotty’s House is a separate but partner entity of law enforcement agencies. The house offers free counseling, forensic interviews, forensic medical exams, and family service coordination. The organization relies on fundraisers, grants, community support, and donations. “The Armadillo Dash is a wonderful financial service for Scotty’s House,” says Cary Haynes, Scotty’s House Executive Director. Donations from the Armadillo

Dash help support the professional medical and counseling personnel who provide services to Scotty’s House. “Since 2007, Scotty’s House has received over $89,000 from the Armadillo Dash,” says Haynes. “It’s amazing. We support the race and help get the word out but they don’t

Still Creek Boys & Girls Ranch Still Creek Ranch has been a Dash recipient and water stop volunteer organization since 2008. The Ranch finds children in crisis and provides full-time, long-term residential

program for 18-23 year old graduates from Still Creek while they attend college or trade school. “Armadillo Dash has been one of the major contributors to our funding,” says Steve Singleton, Still Creek Ranch Executive Director. The Dash has contributed $71,250 to Still Creek Ranch since 2008. Most notably, the Armadillo Dash has funded the start of the Restore Her

Boys & Girls Club of the Brazos Valley The Boys & Girls Club of the Brazos Valley offers after-school programs to at-risk youth. Designed to help kids develop the skills and qualities necessary to become

responsible citizens and leaders, the Boys & Girls Club provides programs in health & wellness, education, leadership, sports, and arts. An Armadillo Dash recipient since 2011, the Boys & Girls Club has been awarded $33,750 and serves more than 2000 youth annually. “The Armadillo Dash funds are utilized to assist in funding our Health & Wellness programming,” says Ron Rolett, President of the Boys & Girls Club of the Brazos Valley. “Programs in this area develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own wellbeing, set personal goals, and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.” Two such programs include the Passport to Manhood for boys and SMART Moves for girls. Both programs target youth eight to 17 years old.

Food Bank Backpack Program The Backpack Program at the Brazos Valley Food Bank helps children in the Brazos Valley eat when they do not have access to free or reduced-price school meals. With more than one in

four Brazos Valley children at risk of hunger, the Backpack program helps ensure kids get proper nutrition and worry less about food being there when they need it. Armadillo Dash has provided the Backpack program with $33,750 since 2011. “Since each BackPack we put together costs around $7, this $33,750 has enabled BVFB to provide over 4,800 food-filled backpacks to local children at risk of hunger over the weekend,” says Theresa Mangapora, Brazos Valley Food Bank executive director. Each backpack is filled with food enough for five meals plus snacks and is discreetly distributed by teachers and school staff to students at risk of going hungry over the weekend. “These backpacks provide children not only needed nourishment but school readiness, self-confidence, and a self-assured start to the school day and week,” says Mangapora. “Don’t all children, despite their socioeconomic status, deserve to feel good about themselves and to start the school week on a level playing field?” i

The Brazos Valley has always fostered longevity. From the original Old Three Hundred settlers in the 1820s to the current influx of students and commercial growth, the region and its businesses have demonstrated how to withstand the test of time. Before the roads were paved and while wagon wheels were getting stuck in mud, Brazos Valley was introduced to the likes of Anco Insurance (1873), The Eagle (1890), Holick’s Boots (1891) and Woodson Lumber (1913). Hillier Funeral Home (1918) and Martin’s Place Barbeque (1925) soon followed. 12

Holick’s Boots After landing in Bryan by accident, Joseph Holick quickly integrated with the Texas A&M Corp of Cadets as a cobbler and bugler. His interest in music eventually led him to start the cadet band. As the first bandmaster, Holick’s ties to Texas A&M were forever cemented in time. While Joseph’s son, Johnnie, was studying music in Austin, he began working for a boot maker. Upon his return to College Station, Johnnie joined Joseph to expand from shoe repair to shoe and boot making. Holick’s success continued as the primary supplier of the Corps’ senior boots. Today, 122 years later, Leo Belovoskey II owns Holick’s. After working for the Holick family for 15 years, Belovoskey was offered the opportunity to buy the shop. His goal – “To be around for as long as we can keep it around,” – is simple. Holick’s still supplies boots, belts and sabers to the Texas A&M Corp of Cadets and band.

Woodson Lumber A legacy began in December 1913 when brothers James Richard “Jim” Woodson and Harrie P. Woodson, Jr. purchased a lumberyard in Caldwell, Texas. 100 years later and Woodson Lumber has endured both World Wars, the Great Depression, the Great Recession and other national financial tsunamis. Woodson Lumber has not only survived but also has thrived. Now run by the third and fourth generations of the Woodson founding family, the company has seven locations serving the Brazos Valley and Central Texas: Caldwell, which remains the home office; Lexington; Bryan; Brenham; Groesbeck; Mexia; and Buffalo. “The key to our success has been slow and steady growth and product diversification through the long run,” says Kate Woodson Chapman, fourth generation and director of marketing and history. “We try and stay away from fad trends to see what is really going to stick around, which ensures that we do, too.” As a family and generational business, Woodson has created a pinnacle of

In the last year, Hillier also expanded their services to include concierge funeral care. As the only concierge bereavement service, Hillier provides everything from personalized shopping for the family to pet care to house cleaning during periods of bereavement in addition to traditional funeral arrangements. “I challenge other businesses to give back to the community,” says Incardona. “Our community is growing at a massive rate, and we have an obligation to give back.”

Ann’s sons, Stuart Chapman and Philip Chapman, work alongside their mother and sister, Kate, to continue the family legacy at Woodson. “We strive to always take care of each other, and to always go the extra mile to make sure that everyone who is part of Woodson Lumber succeeds,” says Ann. “We continue to improve our communication with each generation in the business and at home to ensure we always perform to the best of our abilities.” Recalling business wisdom bestowed upon her from her father, Ann says he responded, “’Come to work every day.’ Of course I thought he was pulling my leg with the dry humor he was so full of, but after nearly 20 years of being here I now know that was some of the best advice I could have ever received.”

Opened in 1925 by Martin Katchinskie, Martin’s Place began as a corner shop selling gas, groceries and barbeque. In 1939, growth and success led to the “new,” and current, location. Now run by Martin’s grandson, Steve Katchinskie, the meat is still cooked with the same tradition and in the same original pit. “I grew up cooking and started helping my dad when I was 12,” says Katchinskie. “I’ve been keeping up the tradition.” Tradition it is with a barbeque pit circa 1939 and meat cooked right over the coals. Katchinskie still uses oak wood for cooking and has customers that have been visiting since the 1940s. “We get a lot of the old-time Aggies from the ‘30s and ‘40s for the games,” says Katchinskie, “They say it still tastes the same!” Word of mouth and keeping the experience simple is the foundation of Martin’s success where pictures spanning nearly 90 years of Bryan, College Station, and Texas A&M history decorate the walls. Martin’s journey is already looking toward the future. Katchinskie says he aims to keep the barbecue pit aglow and eventually pass the restaurant on to his daughter. “It’s just keeping the same tradition.” i

I have had the necklace since Feb ruary 2011 and have never taken it off,” said Smith. Smith welcomed Dusty Britches, named after a saloon in Bandera, Texas, to her home when she was eight weeks old. After her award-winning par ents, Dusty Britches followed in their footsteps and became an AKC Champion in 2003. Two of Smith’s current pets are the descen dants of Dusty Britches. Eight-year-old, Medina is her daughter and Keeper of the Dream, her grand daughter, is in the process of her show career at 18 months old. Smith founded Live Oak Pet Services on her family ranch. He revealed that this year alone five crystals have been made in the Brazos Valley, as well as many other keepsakes. A blend of Pilates and ballet set the barre for fitness

I was once a ballerinA .

The fact that I held a bucket for candy and knocked on doors saying, “Trick or treat” is irrelevant; I was a dance school dropout and my tutu and ballet slippers were forever retired soon after. Since my failed juvenile ballet career, I have dabbled in a number of fitness regimes as an adult: yoga, Pilates, Zumba, crossfit, personal training, swimming, running. The list goes on. Most recently, I came across Xtend Barre. Available at Studio Pilates, Ltd. in College Station, Xtend Barre is a blend of dance, ballet, and Pilates. My suppressed innerballerina was intrigued.

What is Xtend Barre?

“A high-energy cardio workout, Xtend Barre is a multilevel class geared to challenge bodies of any age, gender or fitness background,” says Jana Credor, owner of Studio Pilates, Ltd. “It sculpts the body proportionally, creating a long, lean physique. Arms, abs, legs –

you get the whole thing in 60 minutes.” Xtend Barre combines the long, lean results of dance with the principles of strength and safety in Pilates. The blend is beyond effective. “This is finesse. You’re graceful with it but it takes a lot of strength and energy to hold the positions,” says Credor. My experience with the class was exactly as Credor described. Taught by certified instructor Andrea Sheridan, the class was small and the workout stayed in count with upbeat music. Five minutes in and I understood why dancers have beautifully sculpted arms. The workout began

away from the barre and consisted of fine-motor control in a dancer’s “turned out” position. Slight adjustments of foot and leg positions allowed for small muscle groups to work while maintaining proper spine alignment and core strength of traditional Pilates. “A traditional Pilates Mat class starts on the floor, gradually making ones way to verticality, with the idea that one is able to walk out of class, better prepared for their day,” says Sheridan. “Xtend Barre is similar in that we end with a standing balance, feeling the length and abdominal engagement discovered during class.” The class continued working through the body from floor exercises on a

yoga mat to rotations on the barre with a playground ball. Everything from balance and coordination to strength, stretching and cardio were addressed. Modifications were easily adapted to accommodate the varying levels and abilities of students in the class.

Accessibility

Both Credor and Sheridan emphasize the accessibility of Xtend Barre to anyone. “There’s not much of a limitation,” says Credor. “It’s open to anyone and the material can be really modified down,” she adds, saying she’s seen Xtend Barre students with plantar fasciitis, rods in their backs, and other potentially limiting conditions. A focus on safety and proper

technique also accompanies the modifications and plays a large role in the general workout.

Results

The class was a definite workout. I walked away energized for the day and discovered new muscles that rarely get attention. My body awareness and posture were greatly improved for the following few days. Most importantly, I walked away feeling poised and graceful despite the sweat and sore arms. “[Xtend Barre] makes women feel pretty and elegant while stretching out,” says Credor. “It’s amazing to watch women of all shapes and sizes find their inner-ballerina.” No tutu required. i

His father, Art, was a respected realtor, auctioneer, civic leader and deacon at his church in the community. After unexpectedly losing his father May 6, 2012, because of a fishing trip accident, King encountered a tough battle with grief and despair. The grieving process brought him closer to God and was a catalyst for the album that was released August 13. “Sometimes you say something

King is a singer who also plays the guitar, piano and drums. His musical talents have taken him outside of Texas to music city in Tennessee. Aside from writing and recording his own music, King works for the Nashville publisher Simpleville Company. Simpleville is also the producer for the popular Christian group Mercy Me. Working with Simpleville, King writes music for other artists to produce, flying to Nashville about six times a year to write with other songwriters. Currently King is on the “Guy, Guitar and Gospel” tour with Jimmy Needham. This tour of concerts will take place nationwide in states including California, Nevada, Arizona, Alabama and Georgia. A Common Cause of Lower Back Pain That Is Often Overlooked

Up to 85% of all people have lower back pain (LBP) at some point in their life. LBP is second only to a common cold as a reason for a physician visit. Despite all the attention, a major contributor to LBP is often overlooked as a pain generator. According to Dr. Mukund Gundanna, “up to 30% of low back symptoms are related to the Sacroiliac (SI) Joint. Yet, most physicians were never trained to consider the SI Joint when evaluating a patient for back pain.” The Sacroiliac (SI) Joint forms the lowest segment of the spine and is located on either side of the sacrum in the low back and the pelvic areas. The SI Joint connects the sacrum, the triangular bone at the bottom of the spine, with the pelvis iliac crest. Strong ligaments encase each joint and allow for approximately two to four millimeters of movement during weight-bearing and forward flexion. When these ligaments become damaged either due to normal wear and tear or by injury, they may have excessive motion. This excessive motion may inflame and disrupt the joint and surrounding nerves.

Underscoring the need for proper diagnosis is the fact that pain originating in the sacroiliac joint can mimic discogenic or radicular low back pain. “This could potentially lead to the wrong diagnosis and treatment that may not include the appropriate pain generator,” says Dr. Gundanna. Your physicians will want to perform several diagnostic tests to determine if SI Joint is contributing in whole or in part to their symptoms. These tests may include provocative

manipulation and injecting the SI with painkillers. Treatment may involve physical therapy and SI joint injections to manage the pain. “For patients who are no longer responding

Bees will wait longer than you can hold your breath. DO NOT swat at the bees. They are extremely attracted to motion and swatting will cause more bees to attack you.
