MEET THE EXPERTS... Glynn Purnell Often called the ‘Yummy Brummie’, Glynn Purnell started cooking professionally at the age of 14. After securing a work experience placement in a hotel kitchen, he spent the next two years catching the No 966 bus to the Metropole Hotel at the NEC where he was quickly promoted to making salads and flipping burgers. A six-year stint followed, gaining experience in every department from banqueting to the A La Carte Terrace Restaurant, where he discovered his talent and passion for fine dining. It wasn’t long before he began winning awards including the prestigious Salon Culinaire. His next professional step was as Chef de Partie at Simpson’s Restaurant where he progressed to the position of Sous Chef. The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star and Glynn went on to win many accolades within the industry. After training with top chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes and Claude Bosi, Glynn travelled abroad to work with well-known Michelin starred chefs in Europe. He went on to help launch Jessica’s in July 2003, which was awarded Birmingham’s first Michelin star back in 2005. Glynn is now the proud owner of two establishments in Birmingham, Purnell’s Restaurant on Cornwall Street, which opened in July 2007 and was awarded a Michelin star in 2009, and Purnell’s Bistro & Ginger’s Bar on Newhall Street, which opened in September 2012.

Glynn has become a household name after taking part in the Great British Menu, winning twice and then later appearing as a mentor. He has previously featured on The Great British Food Revival and The Secret Chef, among other television programmes. He can regularly be seen on Saturday Kitchen as a host and guest chef. He presented the latest series of My Kitchen Rules UK alongside Rachel Allen on Channel 4 in 2017.

Jon Jenkins From Newport, South Wales, Jon Jenkins won the hearts of thousands of viewers during the GBBO series last year. Not only did he become known for being a proud Welshman, baking a variety of Welsh bakes most weeks, he also demonstrated his love of loud Hawaiian shirts, by wearing a different shirt each week, including a Christmas themed Hawaiian shirt, starring Santa in a grass skirt. Jon also gained immense popularity for bringing fun to the tent by wearing a tutu to present his ‘ballet’ cake to the judges and for becoming a ‘super hero’ when he stopped to help fellow contestant Ruby when she was struggling. The public and judges were also impressed with his scientific knowledge of baking – it was the first time spherification was heard in the tent and who can forget his tiny glittery lemon balls.

Since being in the Bake Off tent, Jon has had a hugely positive response has worked for the BBC as part of Children in Need and on BBC Radio Wales as part of the Foodie Friday programme. Jon has been involved in promotions of baking products and hosting several open days, including Redrow Homes.

Val Stones Originally from Yorkshire, the retired head teacher served her baking apprenticeship with the women in her childhood: mother, grandmas and aunts. She worked as a teacher for forty years and relaxed by baking and going to the gym. Over the years she has included baking in the curriculum of all her schools and still goes into schools regularly to share her baking skills with children. She loves to bake for family, friends and colleagues in the schools she teaches in. Based in Somerset for over thirty years she travels north to visit family and never goes without bakes, jams and chutneys regularly filling the boot. In 2016 she went on The Great British Bake Off, where she earned the title of Cake Whisperer and charmed the nation with her tips: “listen to your cakes”, “move a little, lose a lot” and “step and bake”. She appeared in the 2017 Christmas special for Bake Off

alongside fellow series seven bakers Selasi Gbormittah, Benjamina Ebuehi and Rav Bansal. Her final Bake Off words touched the hearts of millions and in the Radio Times the speech was voted the favourite BBC Bake Off moment of all time. Since the Great British Bake Off, her life has become very different to that of a teacher. She spends her time baking and is busy with public appearances, radio and TV work, along with writing recipes for magazines and continues to fit in supply teaching.

Katy Ashworth Katy is a versatile performer with accomplished skills and wealth of experience in presenting, children’s entertainment, singing, acting, voice over work and storytelling. She has performed lead roles in major UK pantomimes and theatre shows including the West End. She is a very familiar voice and face of BBC’s pre-school channel CBeebies, presenting daily links in

the CBeebies house, their flagship cookery show ‘I Can Cook’, in ‘Justin’s House’ and the CBeebies pantomimes. Katy is very passionate about healthy lifestyle, creativity, stories and travel. She is an active mother, adventurer, singer and more recently artist.

Sunil Kumar A restaurant is only as good as its chefs and, given Birmingham’s status as the UK’s spiritual home of Indian food, Ahsa’s Solihull are glad to have Sunil Kumar to head up the superb team in their kitchen. In 2002, Sunil joined the Asha’s family and was instrumental in opening three Asha’s restaurants across the world, including Birmingham, where he stayed as a Sous Chef. In 2013, Sunil was promoted to head chef and today, with the help of his dedicated team, manages a kitchen that produces internationally acclaimed, awardwinning Indian cuisine. His appreciation of not only the finer culinary details but also the sense of theatre produced in their show-stopping signature dishes makes him a perfect fit for their philosophy of food at Asha’s: “I’m proud to be head chef in a kitchen where the whole team are continually looking to raise the bar. As a chef, I’ve travelled the world and few restaurants come close.” Sunil is also quick to point out the importance of quality ingredients, “By

locally sourcing fresh, organic meat, fish and vegetables wherever possible, we ensure that the quality of our food is of the highest order. Our signature spice blends add a touch of magic to the mix, bringing authentic regional flavours and accents to everything we serve.” Want to book a table at Asha’s? Rob Palmer

Joining the Peel’s Restaurant team in the early days, Rob rose through the ranks, taking charge of the team of young, local chefs at the age of 27. Rob went on to win his first Michelin star and fourth AA rosette within 18 months. He works quietly and understatedly but with a steely determination. His rigorous approach to flavour and commitment to the main ingredient on the plate results in fresh, seasonal dishes cooked using modern techniques. He’s typically seen with a pencil tucked behind his ear, ready for his moments of inspiration. www.hamptonmanor.com/dinner/

Chris Lacey

Mike Bullard

Chris started off in the butchery trade as a Saturday boy at 14 years old. He fell in love with the trade watching the skill it takes to be a proper butcher and creating beautiful cuts of meat from scratch and knew this was the job for him. Whilst on his journey Chris has picked up lots of skills in creativity and people skills, it’s such a rewarding job because it’s all about making people happy and excited about food. At 22 he entered Young Butcher of the Year, produced by BBC 3 and finished in the top 5 in the country! He also appeared on ITV’s Harry Hill’s TV burp in which he did the fight sketch dressed up as a sausage, it was totally hilarious and well worth a watch! There has never been a more exciting time to be a butcher. Check our Facebook page to see how exciting we are @M P Honnor butchers
