SCOOTIN' TO TEXAS: JANE'S FAN STORY

Thismonth,IwouldliketocongratulateJane "Scooter" Yerowfrom Lafayette,Louisiana,forherentryinourfanstorycontest.Wehadmanyentries, however,MissJane'sstoryhadeverythingwewerelookingforinastory-pictures,heart,excitementandofcoursemanyyearsoffollowingaspecificartist. Inkeepingmyword,IamfeaturingMissJane’sveryawesomestory.Scooterhas traveledhundreds,ifnotthousands,ofmilesinsupportofherfavoriteartist, whichisMaxBacaandLosTexmaniacs.Thankyouandcongratulationsonce againJane!Hereisherstory...

Thefollowingyear,onceagain,wewereallatBlackpotcamp.Iwas sittingintheConjuntoclass,thistimesingingacoupleofduetswithNoel Hernandez.AftertheclassaguynamedDavidBunncameovertomeand introducedhimselfandtoldmethatheproducedshowsinCaliforniaathis home,andthathereallyenjoyedmysinging,andhewasstruckbyhowmuch Iobviouslylovedthemusic.SincehesawIwasfriendlywiththeband,he toldmetheywouldbeperformingthefollowingmonthathisRanch,and wouldbestayingthereforaweek.Thenheinvitedmetocomeoutandbehis guestwhiletheywerethere,sayingitwouldbereallygreatfunifIcould managetocomehangoutwithallofthem.(Areyoukiddingme?!)Well,I wassoblownawayIdidn’tknowwhattosay! ButIsoonrealizeditwould becrazytopassupachancetosoakupmoreConjuntoinSouthern California!Longstoryshort,IwenttohangoutatTheDeepEndRanch,and attendtheLosTexmaniacsperformanceatTheDeepEndSessions,aswellas otherlocalgigs.ThatconcertwasrecordedandfreetowatchonYouTube,as areallTheDeepEndSessions.Itwasoneofthebestweekseverforme!I’m sogratefulformyfriendships.

SincethattimeIhavehadseveralopportunities,thankstoMax‘s generosity,tosingwithhim-inhiskitchenandhehasevencalledmeon stageafewtimes.IhavebeensoinspiredthatIhavesincestartedtolearnto speakSpanish,lovethelanguage,andhavelearnedabout20Conjuntosongs fromCDsbytheTexmaniacs,FlacoJimenez,andLosHermanosFarias,for myownpleasure.IhavemadeanotebookoflyricsofallI’velearned.

IamnowaregularattendeeattheTEJANOConjuntoFestivalinSan Antonio,andjoinedGuadalupeCulturalCenter.Icherishmycontinuing friendshipswithMax,Josh,Noelandhavemetmanyotherfriends(Including Flaco!)throughthem.It’sathrillthatcontinuestobringmegreatjoy.¡Qué alegría!

Hailing fromAlamo,TX,AlyssaT. is aTejano artist influenced by multiple genres of music. Recently,Alyssa had been very busy in the studio working on her latest single, “Lastima,” as well as two other songs that will be out in February. “For Lastima, we used Joey ‘JMZ’Jimenez on drums, Zack Castillo on accordion, Santiago Castillo on electric bass, bajo quinto, and guitar, and Robbie Longoria on congas,” saysAlyssa. On one of the other songs, a cumbia, they used Houston’s “Powerhouse”Avizo, and then for the third song, RandyVillarreal was on guitar, BryanTorres on electric bass, GerardoYanez, on drums, DannyYanez and Ralph Garcia on keyboards, Rick Rios on saxophone, and Isaac Riojas on accordion. With such an eclectic collection of seasoned musicians contributing their sound, Alyssa’s music is bound to catch ears and turn heads.

I’moriginallyfromMassachusetts,andmylove(obsession)ofConjunto musicbeganwhenIfirstheardFlacoJimenezplaywhileontourwithRyCooder inthemidseventies(I’manolderwhitewoman,notfromlarazaandnotfrom SanAntonio).MyRoommatewasamusician,andherbandplayedaversionof “AyTeDejoenSanAntonio”.Ilearnedtosingitalongwiththerecording,but neverhadanopportunitytosingitwithanyone.

Fastforwardto2017,IhavemovedtoLafayette,Louisiana,andmetMax BacaandLosTexmaniacsatTheBlackpotCampinEunice.Theyweregiving workshopsinConjuntomusicandperformedattheeveningdance.Wespoke,and IsaidhowmuchIlovedthemusic.LaterthatyearIwasatanaftershowpartyat TheHilltopCaféinCherrySprings,TX,andeveryonewassittingaroundthe livingroomplayingsongs.IgotupthecourageandsaidtoMax,“youcouldmake adreamofminecometrue...WouldyouplayAyDejoinSanAntonioandletme singitwithyou?”Hesaid“sure”,theyallplayedalong,andIharmonizedwith him.Itwasthethrillofmylife!I’mnogreatsinger,butmyloveofthemusic comesthrough.

“Most of the musicians that involved in recording the last two songs (unreleased at the time of this writing) thought it would be a great idea to form a band in which we could create music influenced by genres that either don’t get much attention, or maybe even have been forgotten,” saysAlyssa. “Most of the music will beTejano, but we will also be focusing on songs that have not been played in a while, or have yet to be covered.”

AsTommyAcosta,headedinsidea medicalinstitutionandgotreadyforhis chemo-treatment,littledidheeverknew t hathewouldeverneedatreatmentlike t histosurviveinhislife,butmorethan anythingthathewouldbeheadedtohis biggestchallengeofhislife,anditwas i nsidehisbody Asthemedical professionalgothimreadyforhisfirst t reatment,ratherthanbefacedwithfear, Tommywentintoadream-likestate, despitegoingthroughthemachine.As r atherthandreamingofhisnegativityof hiscondition,hedreamedofatimeofa verystrongconditionwithashehelda r edflagwithastrongeaglethatrepresented“CesarChavez”atamarchand thisleadtoanothermemoryofasymbolofabig vato locoonhistshirtashe talkedtoabigaudienceinfrontofhim,withaspeechofhopeandpeaceashe noticedsometeens,lookingonastobeinspiredandagreeableintheirnew choices.Whilehisdreamcontinued,littledidTommyrealizehiscurrent status.

TommyAcostabornandraisedintheWestsideofSanAntonio,grewupina roughlife,neighborhood,andcanrelatetonotgrowingupwithasilverspoon. Throughouttheyears,Tommywitnessedmuchturmoilinourneighborhoods andfacedmuchbullyinginthebarrio.Whilemanycontinuethislifestyleand turntheirangertowardsretaliationtowardtheirenemies,Tommydecidedto changetheusualnegativity,hewitnessed.Whileinthemid-2000’sTommy wasemployedwiththeCityofSanAntonioandthroughouttheyearsbecame acoordinatorforthecitycommunityprogramcalled“StandUpSA,”whichis aprogramfundedbythecityaimedathelpingtheyouthofSanAntonioand targetingcrimeareasingivinganalternativeandsecondchancetoteensin goingapositivedirectiontowardsevenmaybeagoodcareer.WhileTommy reallyenjoyedhiscityemployeestatusofbeingarolemodel,healsogrewa passionforhisjobsomuchthatitledtobrainstormingformoregoalsand challengesoutsidehiswork.In2012,Tommyalongwiththestrongsupportof hiswife,Nanettedecidedtostarthisownnon-profitorganizationcalled“All ofUsorNone.”

Tommy’sgoalwasnottoonlyhelpchangelives,butinspiretorn livestoinspirenewgenerationsincreatingapositiverippleintarget neighborhoods,wheremanyfearedorfelthadnohope,Withhis sensitivityintreatingeventheworstcrime-offendedviolator,“I alwaysfelteveryoneshouldbetreatedwithasecondchanceandnot profiledasapermanentoffendermarkedforlife.Asallofusare humanandcanmakemistakesandshouldbeentitledasecondchance toproofourselvesthroughhopeoftrustanddetermination.WhileI maynotbeabletochangeeveryone’sdirectioninlife,itisthe beautyofthosethatdogetasecondchanceanddoverywellina careeroreveninspiremorepeople.”Tommysays.

AsTommy’sresultshasbeensuccessfulthroughtheyears,his progressremainsverynoticedfromvariouscommunityleadersand severalorganizations.AsTommyalwaysbelivesthatvotingisvery importanttohaveleadersofourchoice,inordertohaveprogressin ourcommunity,Tommyhasheldmanyvotingralliesthatincludefun eventsforallages.WhileonemaythinkofTommybeingapartofa politicalatmosphere,Tommyhasexpandedhiseventstobevery community-driventobenefittheunforgottenpeoplelikethe homeless.Thiseventscaughttheeyeoftwoorganizations. One beingtheSanAntonioBrownBerets,whoTommybecameinducted to,andanotherwastheOGVteranasandOGVteranoscholoand cholaorganization,aimedatpreservingtheoldschoolHispanic cultureandservingthecommunity.Tommyimmediatelybecamea member,ashehadgotdeeplyinvolvedwiththeLowridercultureand clubsalsoindressandstyle.

From“AllofUsorNone,”Tommydidamadd-onandchangeover to“BigHomiesUnitedNetwork”and“BigHomiesStreetMentality, aimedatalsobully-proofingchildrenandteens,byinvolvingthemin aprogramthatchallengestheirroleinlife,dedicatingtogivingback. Thispartnerprogramshasteamedupwithmanymoregreatleaders likeKennethDickson,whoishelpingTommywiththeupcoming2nd Annual“FormerlyIncarceratedPeoplesMarchOfTexas,”onApril1, withseveralotherorganizationsjoininginandaimingathelping bringawarenessinsecondchancestobringnewopportunities. TheDallasCowboyshavemadethepostseasonthelasttwoyearswiththis seasonadvancingpastthefirstroundinthemonthofJanuaryforthefirsttime since2018. AfterhandingwhatseemsTomBrady’slastlossofhiscareer,the CowboyslosetotheNo.2seed,SanFrancisco49ersintheDivisionalround oftheplayoffs.Rightafter,theCowboysmadesomechangesanddecidedto partwayswithseveralcoaches. However,theCowboysseemtohaveDan Quinn’sinterestedinatleastanotherseason. Quinn’sbeenthebestdefensive mindinfootballtheclubhashadinquitesometime.

Formyarticlethismonth,Iwastornonwhattowriteabout.Somanyideas wentthroughmytrainofthought.ShouldIwriteaboutdresses,shouldIwrite aboutValentine'sDayWeddingthemes,shouldIwriteaboutwhereValentine's Daycamefrom,istheresuchthingasaValentine'sDayQuinceaneratheme party?Yikes....Allofthesesubjectscertainlywentthroughmymind.And, whichonedidIgowith?Neither...Isimplydecidedtogetalittlepersonalon thismonth'sarticle.Iwantedtosharewithyouafewtruestoriesthatactually happeninmyfamily,ValentineDaystories.

*IhaveacousinwhowasbornafewdaysbeforeValentine'sDay.Myauntand uncleusedtogoonaspecialdateeveryValentine'sDay,sincetheymet.Itwas justaspecialdayforthem,myuncleandAuntwouldgoalloutforeachother. Thatoneyear,Valentine'sDay..myauntdidntreallywanttogooutandleave hernewbornbabyathome,andmyuncleagreed.Sowhattheyendedup makingahomemadepizza,myuncleisagreatcookbytheway,theybothare. Oncethepizzawasdone,theybothsatdownnextcandlelightandenjoyedeach other'scompany. Today,itskindaatraditionistheirimmediatefamily.Every Valentine'sDay(ifigivemyaunt&uncleavisit),Iseeaheart-shapedpizzaat myuncleandmyaunt'shouse.Ifwedon'tseeitthatyear,wehearaboutfrom ourotherrelatives.

*Thisstoryhappenedtomycousin,andiwastheretoexperienceitall(so funny).Manymoonsago,OneValentine'sDay,ihadtocalmmycousindown. Shehadcalleduscrying,tellingus(thefamily),thatapparentlyherboyfriend hadforgottenthatitwasValentine'sDay(booo)(sad).Shewasprettybummed aboutit,whiningandall.Thestorygoeslikethis..Herandherboyfriendhadto workonValentine'sDay.They decidedtocelebrateValentine'sDay thenextday.Yet,shestillwanteda phonecalloratextorsomethingon Valentine'sDay,on-the-actual-day She'sanursesoshewasworking lateshift,itwasaftermidnight whenshefinallygotdonewithher shift.Whenshewalkedouttoher car,andsawhercar,shedropped herkeys&criedsomemore,and thistime,itwashappytears.Hehad decoratedhercarwithballoonsand streamers,fillingtheseatswithher favoritecandyandchocolatesand stuffanimals.Therewaseventhree dozenofrosesinthefrontseat.She endedupcallingusbacktotellus thatshewassowrongabouthim, thenshesentuspicturesof everythinghehaddone.Shewasso sosohappy.

Today,they'rehappilymarriedtosomeoneelse.Itdidn'tworkout betweenthem.

*AfewdaysbeforeValentine'sDay,myuncledecidedtotryout anAmericanNinjaWarriorstyleobstaclecoursewithhiskids... heendeduprapturinghisAchillestendon!SoValentine'sDay foundtheminthehospitalwithhimgettingsurgerytorepairit. Myauntsaiditwasn'tthemostromanticdaybuttheystillgota breakfromtheirkidsandamealoutevenifitwasfromthe hospitalcafeteria.Weallasafamilystilllaughaboutit,welaugh abouttheninjacorsesandallthestuffhesaidwhilehewas dopeduponpainpills.

*Iwaaraisedbymygrandparents,theyraisedmeinaloving home,fullofhugs,kisses,prayers&Iloveyous.My grandparentsweresoinlovewithoneanother.Theyhadahappy strongpatientloveforoneanother.

Everyyearmygrandparentseachgaveoneanothertwocardsfor Valentine'sday.They'dspendsomuchtimepickingtheperfect card--onewasfunnyandtheotheronewassentimental.They keptallofthem,andoncetheywereintherelate60'stheystarted recyclingthem.They'dchoosetheirfavoritesoutoftheoldones andregiftthosetooneanother...sincetheyhadforgottenwhat theyhadwritten,itwasiftheywerereadingitforthefirsttime. Yet,knowingthatthesesamecardsandsamewordshadwarmed theirheartsyearsagoAswell.ThismadetheirValentine'sDay specialeveryyear.

Maytheybothrestinpeace.Iknowthey'reinheaven,because theygavemeheavenaswasbeingraisedbythem. Nomatterwhatdayitis,Ihopeyourdaysarefilledwithlove& happiness.

Willthatevenbemything?Iimaginemy destinyisthatofhelpingothersespecially dotothefactthatmysolepurposefor openingtheteamtheTexasSeraphimasa platformwastohelpasmanypeopleas possible.

Now,Ifindmyselflookingatthe realityofanathleteseverydaystruggleto obtainthepeakoftheirsuccess.Many playersIhavenoticeintoday’sgrindseem tofeelasinceofentitlement.While,earning itisanafterthought.Itisalwaysrefreshing tovisualizethehunger WhetheritsLebron’s NBAaccoladesorBrady’sNFLlongevity Wemustrememberwhatittakesto getthere.Whereitbeginsisinthemind.

Ihavehadthepleasureasanownerandacoachtowitnessfirsthandofthe hungertobecomemore.Afterdiscussingmywoesinrecruitingadearcolleague ofmineinvitedavisionofachampionfromNigeria.Whichinternopenmymind totoday’sfeature.

GRUPO SECRETTO ADDS

Its no secret that one of the hottest bands from theValley has had some roster changes over the past year. Grupo Secretto, the band responsible for the hits “Bonita” and “Tan Bella yTan Presumida,” was recently on the prowl to fill the position for bajo quinto. Secretto wouldn’t have to look very far, though. In fact, the position would be trusted with someone that comes from a longstanding musical dynasty, someone born into music.

Introducing Juan Longoria III, the new member of the band Secretto. Hailing from Los Fresnos,TX, Juan is an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist and busy full-time student who comes from a family with a rich musical history. He brings a fresh sound to the popular band, and is sure to make waves in the music industry As the newest member of Secretto, 22 year old Juan is sure to bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the group.

Juan Longoria III is the son of Juan Longoria Jr. and Erika Longoria, and comes from a family with an extensive musical background. From a young age, Juan had an affinity for music, which his father and other family members encouraged and helped him to nurture. At eight years old, Juan began learning to play the accordion and at fourteen, he started to learn bajo sexto. His father, grandfather, uncles,

and cousins all play music, inspiring him to pursue music himself. Aside from the accordion and bajo quinto, Juan also plays the bass guitar, drums, tumbas, saxophone, vihuela, and sings.At 9 years old, Juan Longoria III was a semi-finalist on the accordion forTexas Folklife’s Big Squeeze contest (younger age category), and in high school at Los Fresnos High, he was awarded 1st place “Best Bajo Quinto/ Sexto Player” during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. “I've made many wonderful memories playing music with my family and friends. GOD willing I'll continue making new memories doing what I love to do,” says Juan. Its safe to say, Juan knows what he’s doing when he’s wielding just about any kind of musical instrument.

Juan has always had a great relationship with his father, Juan Longoria Jr., who has been integral in his journey not just as a musician, but also in life. “He has always taught me to be humble and respectful towards everyone,” Juan says about his dad. He loves the support and love his family gives him for his music and acknowledges them as his biggest inspiration. Music runs through the veins of the Longoria family and it is a passion that Juan holds close to his heart. Juan Jr. teaches a conjunto music class at Los Fresnos ISD; they are called Conjunto Halcón

Juan Longoria III was first spotted by the members of Secretto when they saw a video of him helping a friend in another band on the bajo quinto.The band was impressed and invited Juan to send them a video of his own bajo quinto playing. Juan happily obliged, sending a video of himself performing.The band was very pleased with what they heard and offered Juan the position. “I would like to contribute in any positive way possible,” says Juan III. “To bring in what I've learned in the past and hopefully create new ideas with Secretto.” In the past, Juan has played with Conteño, Los Fresnos High School Conjunto Halcon, La Lexxion, and La Mancuerna, to name a few
