Mini-Works to Start Moving Again!

Here comestheswimsuitandshortsleeveweather,sothismonthIamgoingto sharesomefunminiworkoutmovestohelpyoustrengthenandtoneyour body.

Ideally,youwouldworkoutfor30minutesormore,butmostofusareso busythatitishardtogetinone30minuteworkoutaday,sothenextbest thingistobreakitupinminiworkoutsthroughouttheday.

The first movement in the photo below is a “stationary run” movement. Noticethesplitstance,legsapart,coreheldtight,shoulders relaxed.Onceyougetintothisposition,startmovingyour armslikeyouarerunning. Tostartslow,justdothis movementfor30-60seconds,thenswitchfeetinthefront stanceposition,andrepeat.

The next movement is what I like to call “driving the car”. Youextend yourarmsandturnthewheeltotheleftandtotherightasifyouaremaking turnswhiledrivingacar. Foranaddedobliquemovement,(notseeninthe videoreferencedabove) bendatthewaist,doingalateralflexionatthe spine. Dothismovementfor30-60secondsatatime. Makesureyoualwaysholdyourcoretightandkeepaslight bendintheknees. Asyougetstronger,youcanworkupto doingthisinaspitstanceposition(picturedabove),lunge position orinstationarysquatpositionforamoretotal bodystrengtheningmovement. Tostartslow,dothis movementfor30-60secondsatatime

The third movement is alternating elbow bend with arms lifted abovethehead. Makesuretokeepyourcoretight withaslightbendintheknee.Thismovementcanalsobe doneinaspitstanceposition,lungeposition orinasquat positionformoreofalowerbodychallengeasyouget stronger.Tostartslow,dothismovementfor30-60secondsatatime. The fourth movement is “swimming arms.” Startwithfeetshoulderwidth apartandstartrotatingyouramsforwardasifyouare swimming. Tostartslow,dofor30-60secondsgoing forward,thenreverseyourarmdirection,asiftodothe backstroke.Alwaysremembertokeepyourcoretightand shouldersdownsoastonotoverstressyourtrapezius muscles.Doingthismovementinthesplitstance,fulllunger orsquatpositioncanalsomakethismorefun,akamore challenging.

The fifth movement is the simple “kickback” movement. Youcandothe movementinanalternatingrhythmoratthesametime.Makesurenotto roundyourbackasyouleanforwardandkeepyourchest liftedtoengageyourcore.Squeezeyourscapulas(shoulder blades)togethertoisolatethetriceps(thebackofyourarms). Startingwiththe30-60secondsandworkingyourwayinto morecomplexstanceslikethesplitstance,fulllungeor squatpositionwillmakethismovementmorefuntoo

Sothereyouhave,fivemovementstogetyoumovingtostrengthenandtone upforsummer Asyougetstrongerandgothroughtheprogression,youcanadd weights,butIrecommendonperfectingyourformfirstinall3legstances(split stance,fulllunge,fullsquat). Byholdingyourlowerbodyinastationarybut flexedposition,youarechallengingyourmusclesisometrically. Bybendingand flexingatthejoints,youarechallengingyourmusclesisotonically. Bydoing theserhythmicmovementswhilebreathinginthroughthenoseandexhaling throughthemouthfor30minutesatatime,youcanstrengthenyourlungsand core.

Butifyoudon’thave30minutechunksoftime,doonemovementinthe morningfor30-60seconds. Thenpickanothertimemid-morningtodothe secondmovementfor30-60seconds. Atlunchtime,dothethirdmovementfor 30-60seconds.Later,mid-afternoondothefourthexercisefor30-60seconds. Finallybeforedinner,dothefifthmovementfor30-60seconds. Attheendofthe daybeforegoingtobed,doeachofthemovementsconsecutively30-60seconds atatime. Thatmayonlygiveyou5-10minutesofworkingoutadaytostartoff yourprogram,butasyougetstronger,challengeyourcoremore,youwillwant addweightssndotheractivitieslikewalkingordancingtostrengthenyourbody.

“CONJUNTO MUSIC BEGINNINGS” A StreetTalkMusicalChapter

Whilemanygatheratalocalparkon aSundayafternoon,somemay soundtrackthenicecountryscenery withanupbeatofnotrockorcountry, butofanup-beatedexoticmelody withmanydancinginthebackground andashinyglarefromshinyStacy Adamstappingthedownbeatonthe pavement,thesewerescenesthatwe allonceknewatMissionCountyPark orRosedaleParkintheearly1980’s toevenknowatspecialevents.With thepulsatingbassline,andmelody throughaninstrumentwithbellows thatcompressesairknownasthe accordion,thisisnotjustagenreof music,butauniquelifestyleknown as “Conjunto.” Whilemanycansay thatthisgenreofmusichasbeen aroundformanygenerations,ithas neverreceivedadownfallordrop,as itdoesn’ttakelongespeciallyinSan Antonio,Texastohearthismusicina neighborhood,orsocialvenue.ThisisnotthestoryofthepopularityofConjunto,butofits rootsinhow Conjunto tookaperson’semotionsandsometimesstrugglesintomusicand startedamovementinmusic.

WhilemanywouldassumeandmanybringupmanytimesthatConjuntohaditsroots withtheHispanic,butthisisincorrectasthebeginningandfirstConjuntobeatstartedwith Europeanrootsandwithacertainmusicalinstrument.Backin1820withFredrich Bushmann,whoinventedaninstrumentthathecalledthe handaoline.Thisinstrument consistedofahollowcubecontaining21metalreedsthatmademusicalnotes,whenair passedoverthemandhadbellowsthatsuppliedandcontrolledtheair.Nineyearslater,in 1829,AustrianCyrillDemian,createdanothermoreadvancedinstrumentthathadaright handbellowsandwasplayedlefthanded,thatconsistedoffourbuttons.Thebuttonseach createditsownindividualsoundwhentheindividualwouldsqueezeandstretchthe bellows.SomeyearslaterCharlesWheatstonebuiltaninstrumentwithbellowsabletoplay thechordswiththelefthandandthemelodieswiththerighthandandproducedan upgradedharmoniccrispsound.Withthisnewportablesounditfounditswaytomore Europeans,especiallyGermansandItalians.

TheGermanswouldincorporatethe handaoline intoshowperformances,whichlater consistedofbandsthatwouldproduceabassy“oom-pah”withtherighthand.Thiscreated anewgenreatthetimeofpolkaandalsoothersimilarwaltzmelodies.Inthemid1800’s theGermansstartedmass-producing,whatwasnowcalledtheaccordion.Inthe1860’s GermansmigratedtoMexicoandthelowerUnitedStates,includingsomemigratingtoSan Antonio,TexasandNewBraunfels,Texas.WhilemovingtoMexicoandsomestates,the Germansbroughttheirpolkasandwaltzandboughtmoreaccordionstoincorporateintheir events.In1845,TexasjoinedtheUnitedStatesofAmericaandwhileSpanish-speaking

residentswerenowknownasTejanos,theyalsorecruitedtheaccordion intheirlibraryandtheirownstyleofmusicwasalsoborn.Oneofthese genreswas Norteno music.

Itwassaid,thatasmanyGermanresidentsresidedinNewBraunfels, Tx,manyHispanicswereimpressedwiththepolkasoundasmany GermanmusicaleventsflourshedinNewBraunfels,TxandSouthTexas soonhadthehomelandofmanywelltrainedGermanaccordionplayers andsingers.Aspopularitygrewthisestablishedthestate’sfirstforprofit dancehalls.ThisupbeatmusicinfluencedmanyHispanicstoaddthe accordiontotheirinstrumentofchoicetotheirmusic.Whilemany Hispanicsworkedthefieldsveryhardeverydayandmadealiving, includingsometimesthementalfrustrationwaslittletimeoff.Itwasthe newmusicthatbroughthopeandcomfortsometimestotheTejanoaftera longstressfulday,especiallyinsometimesincorporatingthewhole familia.Oneknewthatwhileafullschedulewasupahead,sowasthe comfortofthenewsoundsintheendoftheday!

Inthelate1920’sandearly1930’s,twomenbythenameofNarciso MartinezandSantiagoJimenezwhobecameadvancedaccordionistsand musicians,wererumoredtohavedefinedaneweradvancedsound,which wouldsoonbecomeknownaswhatweknowasConjunto.Oralehere’s theLow-downdouble-playonthistwoConjuntolegends!

NarcisoMartinezwasbornin1911inReynosa,Mexicoandhisfamily soonmovedtoasmalltownnearBrownsville,Texas,ashisfamily frequentlymovedduetoworkonthefields,Narcisolearnedthe accordionfromhisolderbrother,Santos.Narcisolearnedsofastthrough passionthathesoonstartedplayingdancesinKingsville,Texaswithonly asecondhandaccordion!By1935fromanexperthebecameamasterof thisinstrumentandhestartedworkingwithfamousbajosextonplayer SantiagoAlmeida.Thatsameyear,arecordcompanybythenameof BluebirdRecordsnoticedNarcisoanddecidedtorecordhim.Narciso’s veryfirstsongrecordingwasthe hit“LaChicharronera.”Inthe late1930’sBluebirdRecords issuedinstrumentalstoNarciso tousefordancegigs,asdancers atthetimepreferred instrumentals.Itissaidthat Narcisoandafriendwouldlearn manytunesfromGermanand Czechbandsastheywouldsoak uptheirearsafteraperformance andlaterashisfriendwould whistlethetune,Narcisowould

getthemelodydownonhisaccordion.WhileNarcisobecamepopular,hispay wassmallduetogigsinvolvingsmallentryfeesashebecamemoreinterested inpeoplehearinghimandnotpayinghim.Hisformulaontheaccordion includedignoringthebass-cordbuttonsthatwasheardinoom-pahGerman polkasandaddingSantiago’sbajo,whichcreatedanewuniquesound.Inthe valley,Narcisobecameknownasthe“HurricaneoftheValley.”

WhileNarcisohittheairwavesDonSantiagoJimenezdidhispartonhisend! Santiagowasbornon1913inSanAntonio,Texasandwasthesonoffamous accordionistPatricioJimenez.Santiagolearnedtheacoordionattheageof12 fromhisfather,whohadlearnedtheaccordionfromhisGermanfriendsinNew Braunfels,Tx.Santiagosoonplayedlocallyandaddedthetololoche,which broughtinuniquedeepbassnotes.JiménezlaterrecordedforImperial,Globe, andMexicanVictorrecords.Hismostfamouspolkasincluded "La Piedrera" and "Viva Seguin" recordedin1942andbecameverywell-knowntraditional hits.HissonsSantiagoJr.andFlacolaterbecamewellknownintheconjunto industry,atonlytheageof15in1958,Santiagoonaccordionandhisolder brother,FlacoJimenezwhoplayedbajosexto,recorded “El Príncipe y el Rey de la Acordeón.”TheJimenezfamilyhasbeenknowntocontinuethelegacy withseveralhundredsofsongsandrecordings,grammyawardsandevenbeing inductedtothe “Tejano and Conjunto HallofFame”andevenreceivinga presidentialMedalofArtsawardfromPresidentClintonandObamainbringing Conjunto intothenationalcommunity!

Oneofthemostawfulfeelingsistolearnthatyou’renotgoodenoughtogetthat onespecialitemyou’vebeenwantingtogetallalong.Itsureisanawfulfeeling beingturneddown.

Worstyet,whenyou’vebeentoldyou’llbereceivingaletterinthemailin seventotenbusinessdaystoexplainwhyyouweren’tapprovedonthespotafter applyingforcreditatastore.

Therefore,youshouldstartbuildingcreditearly.Youcanestablishcreditata youngageinseveralways.Forstarters,youcouldopenacreditcardinyourname ortakeoutaloan.Ifforsomereason,you’retooyoungandcan’t,perhapsyoucan askaparenttoaddyoutooneoftheircreditcards.It’sbesttostartsoonerrather thanlaterbecauseapositivecredithistorycanhelpyouinmanywaysandsave youmoneyduringthetransitionintoadulthood.

HaveyoueverheardthatweareStardust?

WhenIstudiedAstronomyatSanAntonioCollege,itwasinthe70’s andbackthenIhadnoideawhattoexpectotherthanIknewIneededto learn.Mylifejourneybeganwiththegoaloflearningabouteverything Icouldinashortperiodoftime.Idiscoveredthateducationwassogreat andenjoyablewhenyouareincontrolofthedirectionofyourstudies. Educationwaslikeajewelthatyouhadtokeeppolishingeverydayto makeitshine.

IhadnotlearnedyetwhateducationmeantotherthanIneededtoget adegreeinsomething.Posthighschoolmeantlearningabout everythingtherewastolearn,sinceitfeltatthetimethatsomethingwas severelymissinginmylife.Myhighereducationstartedbytaking simplecoursesinspeedreading,Englishwriting,vocabularybuilding andallthebasicsincludingelectiveslikegeology,biology,astronomy, sociology,psychologyandonandon.

Walkedoutwithanassociate'sdegreeinFineArtsinScience,and bachelor'sdegreesinFashionDesign,Business,&VisualMerchandisingManagement. Ittookmeeightyears,butIdidit,Inevergaveup,Ikeptgoing.Familymembers,ex husband,&evensomeoldfriends...usetotellme,'you'llnevermakeit,you'renot smartenough,whydon'tyoujustgetaregularjob,justquitalreadyyouhavekidsto carefor,nobodywillbuyyourdressesorjewelry.Itdefinitelywasn'teasyandIdon't everregretfurtheringmyeducation.Allthatnegativitywasturnedintofuel.Those words&downgradingbecamemyfuel.Thesemeanpeopleinmylifeunknowingly fueledmeup,fueledmeuptookeepgoing,tokeepfighting,andwiththat,Iendedup graduatingwithflyingcolors.TowardstheendofmycollegeyearsIstartedcreating jewelryformyself.Myapartmentatthetimewasbrokeninto,theyhadtookALLmy jewelry.Icouldn'taffordtobuyeverythingagain,andIlovedwearingjewelry,sowhat now?I'lltellyouwhatnow,Itaughtmyselftocreatejewelry.Studentsinmyclasses startednoticingmyjewelryandasked"howmuchwouldyouchargetomakemefour ofthosenecklaces"or"howmuchtomakemeone"',Iwasshocked,shockedthat someonewaswillingtopayformyjewelrydesign,mycreation.Jewelrymaking wasn'tinmyplan,Ithought.littledidIknow,myhandmadejewelrywasabouttoopen majordoorsforme,doorformyjewelry&futuredresses,anditdid!Rightafter collegemynewcareerasafashiondesignerhadstarted.Yes,Icreatedlotsofdresses, pantsuits,blouses,slippers,handbagsformen&women,beadingwork,embroidery etc..whileincollege.Yet, MyjewelrylineopenedLasVegasdoorsforme.That's right,LasVegas,Nevada.Myjewelrybecameitsownbrand.Icreatedbeadedinsects andreptilesetc.

is grittybutnotgratuitous.Itisasoulfullookattheharsheraspectsofbarriolife experiencedbytwocamaradas.

MonoAguilar,aprofessoratSanAntonioCollege,saidChato’sBridgestartedoff asashortstoryyearsago.

“WhenIturnedthestoryintoasceneforaplay,thingschanged,”Aguilarsaid. “Thephysicalandhistoricalsettingof1979Westsideremained,butalmost everythingelsealtered.NowChato’sBridgeisinitsfifthincarnation,evolving fromstagedreadingswithSALTA,afullproductionatSanAntonioCollegeand JumpStart,tothisproductionbytheGuadalupeCulturalArtsCenterTheaterArts Program.

“Inoneproduction,theaudiencebecamesoengagedthatsomepeopletauntedthe antagonistashewasbeingbeaten,”Aguilarsaid.“I’mgladthatwe’restagingitat theGuadalupe;it’sabarrioplay,anditneedstobeperformedinitsbarrio.”

Aguilarsaidthetwomaincharacters,ChaleandSimon,aretwocriminalswith deadlytempers.Theotherfigurespropeltheplotandprovideintrospection.

“DoloresDeLeonisacouncilwomanwithaterriblesecret,”Aguilarsaid.“Dona Sandovalisabouttoretirefromthepoliceforce,butherloveleadstodeath.Their livesintertwined40yearsagointragedyonabridgeovertheApacheCreek,andthey willdosoagain.”

AguilarsaidthatwhilethecharactersandsettingaredistinctlyChicano,theplay’s themesareuniversal.

“Thelove,loyalty,andrevengeinChato’sBridgecanbefoundineverythingfrom HamlettoKissoftheSpiderWoman,”Aguilarsaid.“Itsprotagonistsaren’theroes, andtheplaydoesnotglorifytheiractions.Theyarerealistic,asistheirsituation.I wouldn’thangoutwithChaleandSimon,”Aguilarsmiled,“butI’dbehappytohave thembackingmeupinatightspot.”
